White House Secures Steel for Ballroom From European Company

ArcelorMittal, a European steel maker, is donating foreign steel for the structure of the $400 million White House ballroom project, according to two people familiar with the plans.

Today, I’m defending America’s national security by placing tariffs on foreign imports of steel and aluminum. We will have a 25 percent tariff on foreign steel. Instead of relying on foreign countries, we are now relying on American producers, and we are relying on American workers to build our own future, right here, on American soil. That’s why I fought for the American steel worker like no president has ever fought before. We’re going to bring it from 25 percent to 50 percent. The tariffs on steel into the United States of America, which will even further secure the steel industry. I said to the owner — I made a speech at a factory. They made steel products. And I said, “How are you? Nice to meet you. How’s business?” “President, I’d love to kiss you.” A steel company, a great steel company, a great man, actually. He said, “Sir, I’d like to donate the steel for your ballroom.” I called the contractor — “Sir, it’s down for $37 million. I said, “This is a nice donation, right?” He wants the steel and he wants to make it great steel as opposed to garbage steel because they dump a lot of garbage around. I think it’ll be the finest ballroom of its kind anywhere in the world. A lot of people are giving it really good reviews. Some are giving it reviews without even seeing the building because this just came out.
