A website named “Jensen Huang’s Footprints” in Korean shows a map and timeline of his expected locations and meetings over the four-day visit, which starts Friday. Meals of smoky Korean barbecue and soju drinking sessions are anticipated. Huang is set to appear on one of the country’s most popular variety TV shows, “You Quiz on the Block,” and will throw the first pitch at a Doosan Bears baseball game.

That agenda isn’t just for his amusement. Nvidia is looking to deepen its ties with South Korea as tech supply chains come into focus given the Iran war, and as the company faces rising regulatory hurdles in selling to the mainland Chinese market. A successful visit by the well-regarded CEO could be very helpful for the company’s fortunes in the country.

“Korea is ‌a critical part of our ecosystem,” Huang told reporters at a dinner with South Korean tech executives on the first day of the annual Computex trade show in Taipei.

Look closer, and the business side is in focus for the Koreans as well. The Footprints website, which has drawn more than 80,000 visitors, displays the share-price moves of companies that are often associated with Nvidia. Potential meal partners include titans of the tech industry like SK Group’s Chey Tae-won, LG Group’s Koo Kwang-mo and Naver’s Lee Hae-jin.

Even at the baseball game, the chairman of the Doosan conglomerate that owns the Bears is set to join as a batter.

CNBC compiled details of the expected meeting and meals, based on reports including from Chosun Ilbo, South Korea’s largest newspaper by circulation. The baseball game that Huang will be attending has been confirmed by the team, while the TV channel confirmed his upcoming appearance on the variety show.

Shares of South Korea’s chip makers slipped on Friday despite the excitement over Huang’s visit, tracking overnight losses in U.S. chip stocks following Broadcom’s downbeat earnings report. Index heavyweight Samsung Electronics fell 3.98%, while SK Hynix dropped 7.22%.

Shares related to pork belly and Korean soju are mixed ahead of Huang’s arrival.
Agrifood leader Farmsco gaining 2.85% and conglomerate CJ CheilJedang losing 0.60%, while alcoholic beverages companies HiteJinro and Lotte Chilsung dropped 3.44% and 0.19%, respectively.

Four months ago, industry veterans were debating whether AI shopping agents could disrupt Amazon and Walmart’s dominance. Today, those same retailers are racing to build the infrastructure that makes those agents possible. That’s how quickly this is moving.

For the past 25 years, the retail website has been sacred territory. Brands controlled the narrative, captured data, and converted browsers into buyers. AI shopping agents are about to do to websites what e-commerce did to storefronts: not eliminate them, but fundamentally transform their purpose.

Analyzing over 20 million AI shopping agent conversations revealed an unmistakable pattern. Consumers aren’t just experimenting with conversational commerce; they prefer it for the purchases that matter most. In electronics alone, buyers ask 50% more questions before purchasing than in any other category. When retailers deploy AI shopping agents for these complex products, they’re seeing 25% engagement rates and conversion lifts 10 times higher than traditional website experiences.

High-consideration purchases—the ones that drive the most margin and require the most customer service resources—are already moving to conversational interfaces. Your laptop buyers, your furniture shoppers, your customers researching the perfect gift aren’t browsing product grids anymore. They’re asking questions, comparing features in natural language, and expecting instant, intelligent guidance.

I recently watched this shift play out in real time. At a summit of 50+ retail executives from brands like Wayfair, Lenovo, and Foot Locker, we held a live debate: Will AI agents replace websites within 10 years? Initially, 82% of the room defended the website as irreplaceable. After hearing the evidence on engagement data, conversion metrics, and the changing consumer behavior, sentiment shifted enough that the pro-agent argument won. These retail veterans recognized that AI is fundamentally separating two functions their websites have always combined: discovery and transaction.

Your website will still exist a decade from now. But it won’t be the only transaction engine. It will be your brand showcase, your content hub, your trust-building destination. Meanwhile, the actual shopping, including the research, comparison, and purchase consumers make, will increasingly happen in AI agent environments, whether that’s ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or brand-owned conversational experiences.

Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT are all rolling out or experimenting with features that enable AI agents to handle ecommerce transactions without users ever leaving the platform. When a consumer can research products, compare options, read synthesized reviews, and complete purchases all within a single conversational thread, navigating to multiple websites, opening countless tabs, and hunting through product filters becomes unnecessary friction.

Forward-thinking retailers who understand this shift are already building what I call “agentic infrastructure.” These are the systems, data architecture, and conversational capabilities that let AI agents access their catalog, understand their brand voice, and transact on behalf of customers. They’re treating AI shopping agents the way forward-thinking retailers treated ecommerce 25 years ago.

That comparison matters. In 2000, when Ralph Lauren invested $200 million in ecommerce, a headline in the (print) Daily Mail declared the internet was “just a passing fad.” The move seemed risky. A decade later, that bet continued to pay off as the brand was “recession proof” and its digital dominance continues through today. The current AI moment demands similar courage, and the stakes are just as high.

There are no experts in AI commerce yet. We’re all builders in these early days, testing hypotheses and learning what works. But some retailers are testing, iterating, and gathering insights from every conversation their AI agents have, while others are waiting for certainty that will never come. The gap between those two groups will determine who owns the next decade of retail.

The data coming from early AI shopping agent deployments tells a clear story. When purchases require careful consideration, consumers increasingly prefer conversational commerce over self-service browsing. They want to ask follow-up questions and have comparisons explained in plain language. They want the kind of guided shopping experience that mimics a knowledgeable store associate, not a product database. And they want it on demand, not just during business hours. Your website can’t deliver that experience. An AI agent can.

Consumer behavior and the technology giants investing billions in AI commerce have already written the script. Twenty-five years ago, retailers who dismissed ecommerce as a fad learned an expensive lesson. Today, the retailers who dismiss conversational commerce as hype will learn the same one. The difference: the window to experiment, learn, and build is shorter. AI is moving faster than the web ever did.

Your website isn’t disappearing. But if you think the version of it that has worked for the past 10 years will work in the next five years, you’re betting against how your customers want to shop.

The Social Security Administration said it’s investigating the cause of recent incidents that have prevented beneficiaries from accessing their online accounts, after the portal went down temporarily.

The MySSA portal, which allows Social Security recipients to manage their benefits online, experienced a “full outage” Monday morning, according to a system notice sent to agency employees.

“There have been a couple of recent incidents impacting ‘My Social Security’ and we are actively investigating the root cause,” SSA spokeswoman Nicole Tiggemann said in a statement. She said the website itself remained operational during the incidents, but “some people may have experienced a problem signing in to their personal ‘My Social Security’ account.”

The outage is the latest in a series of once-rare system crashes that have happened in recent weeks. The agency has pushed users toward online and in-person services — and away from the telephone — as part of an effort to increase efficiency and crack down on alleged fraud.

Monday morning’s outage also impacted a number of other cloud and internal systems used by the agency.

Social Security’s systems and databases have been a key target of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency as it seeks to find waste and fraud in the federal bureaucracy. Musk’s team has sought to access Social Security numbers, names, as well as birth and death dates of the program’s beneficiaries.

As DOGE teams have embedded in the agency, the SSA has rolled out a series of measures in what’s been billed as an effort to minimize fraud and improve efficiency. Over the weekend, the agency rolled out a new feature that allows Social Security beneficiaries to upload documents and forms without assistance from agency technicians.

DOGE has deployed at least 10 staffers to the Social Security Administration to identify waste. But the agency’s data do not support claims of widespread fraud: From 2015 through 2022, Social Security estimated that it made almost $72 billion in improper payments — less than 1% of benefits paid, according to an inspector general report last year.

Ohanian and Digg founder Kevin Rose acquired the platform for an undisclosed sum. The deal is backed by venture capital firms True Ventures, where Rose is a partner, and Ohanian’s Seven Seven Six. The partnership was announced Wednesday in a video post to the company’s X account in which Rose called the partnership a “team-up he would have never imagined 20 years ago.”

Digg was founded in 2004 and rose to prominence as a major outlet for trending news because it allowed users to rate stories. Rose made what became an infamously goofy appearance on the cover of Businessweek in 2006 as the kid who “made $60 million in 18 months.”

The company said in a release that it aims to differentiate itself in the social media market by “focusing on AI innovations designed to enhance the user experience and build a human-centered alternative.” Digg said it will also create a platform that “prioritizes transparency, rewards human effort, and fosters enriching discussions.”

Ohanian also teased the collaboration, telling X followers on Wednesday that he was “working on something new… but also old… but also very new” and is “excited” to be partnering with Rose.

At its peak in 2008, Digg was reportedly valued at about $160 million. But the rise of Facebook and other social sites caused traffic to Digg to plummet. Meanwhile, Reddit, which was founded a year after Digg by Ohanian and current CEO Steve Huffman, emerged as a direct rival to Digg by forming communities around types of content and letting users similarly rate news stories.

In 2012, Digg’s brand and website were acquired by tech incubator Betaworks for about $500,000.

Reddit has continued its ascent, reporting nearly 102 million daily active users at the end of the fourth quarter. The site gained widespread attention when it became the center of the 2020 meme stock craze as retail traders inflicted huge pain on hedge funds shorting stocks using a subreddit known as Wallstreetbets.

Reddit went public on the New York Stock Exchange last March at $34 a share and has seen its stock nearly quintuple. Shares are up about 1% year to date and added 4% during Wednesday’s session.

Ohanian has moved on to other projects since he stepped down from Reddit’s board in 2020. He’s currently partnering with billionaire Frank McCourt in a bid for TikTok after President Donald Trump extended the initial deadline for the company’s Chinese-parent ByteDance to sell the social media platform or face a ban.

Rose said in a post on X that he and Ohanian “dreamed up features that weren’t even possible with yesterday’s tech.”

“The new @digg brings some great nostalgia, but we’re not here to just rebuild the past or clone a competitor,” he wrote.

A technology issue at Alaska Airlines resulted in the temporary grounding of flights in Seattle on Monday morning and problems into the afternoon for people trying to book flights on its website, the airline said.

The Seattle-based company said in a statement the issue Monday morning resulted in a “significant disruption” to its operation — including delayed flights. The airline said it requested a 40-minute ground stop at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to clear aircraft congestion.

No further details were given about the technology problem, and the reason for the disruptions was unclear.

A message on the company’s website Monday afternoon said it was experiencing issues with booking flights on the website, through a mobile app and at the contact center.

“We sincerely apologize to our guests who are impacted and are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible,” the statement said.

The problems came at the start of the company’s Cyber Monday flight sale. In comments from its account on X to customers complaining of missed flights, delays and problems using the airline’s app and website, the carrier also apologized.

Donald Trump’s new crypto project is off to a rough start.

World Liberty Financial, which aspires to be a sort of crypto bank, launched its token sale on Tuesday, a day after project co-founder Zachary Folkman said that “well over 100,000 people” are on the whitelist to invest.

But WLF’s website suffered regular and lengthy outages for much of the morning and early afternoon, contributing to a limited number of sales. Only about 4,300 unique walled addresses hold the token as of Tuesday afternoon, according to blockchain data tracked by Etherscan, representing roughly 4% of the total number of people who registered.

The platform says it has sold more than 532 million tokens at 15 cents per token. That’s less than 3% of the 20 billion tokens made available for public sale.

Over the course of the day, the website frequently showed a page saying, “We are under maintenance.”

WLF didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The glitchy launch is a potential setback to the Republican presidential nominee with just three weeks until the election. Trump and his family have been touting the project since August, branding it as “The DeFiant Ones,” a play on DeFi, which is short for decentralized finance.

In a roadmap given to prospective investors that was first viewed by The Block, the WLF proposal says the coin is looking to raise $300 million at a $1.5 billion valuation in its initial sale. Folkman, who previously had a company called Date Hotter Girls and reportedly helped develop crypto project Dough Finance, has said that 20% of WLF’s tokens would be allotted to the founding team, which includes the Trump family.

The digital coin WLFI will be a Regulation D token offering, following a provision that makes it possible to raise capital without first registering a security with the SEC. Certain conditions must be met, such as limiting the size of the sale and restricting it to accredited investors, defined in part as having a net worth of over $1 million.

While few details have been announced about the project’s aspirations, people involved with WLF have said customers will be encouraged to borrow, lend and invest in crypto. No official white paper or formal business plan has been released to the public, and about all that’s been disclosed is that investing in the project will give users voting rights over the yet-to-be-launched WLF platform.

Last week, WLF began the process of getting its crypto bank approved by the DeFi ecosystem known as Aave.

Aave is open source and, in DeFi, is one of the longest-running and most-trusted crypto lending platforms.

Franklin Templeton’s Ethereum Spot ETF ticker has appeared on the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) list, indicating a possible signal that the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) could approve Ethereum ETFs.

Franklin Templeton’s Spot Ethereum ETF Gets Listed By DTCC

On Friday, April 26, the proposed Ethereum Spot ETF of American multinational investment firm, Franklin Templeton made its debut on DTCC’s official website, under the ticker symbol EZET.

Franklin Templeton’s new listing on DTCC’s platform comes amidst the ongoing deliberations of the SEC regarding approving Ethereum Spot ETFs. Earlier in January, following the approval and launch of Spot Bitcoin ETFs, many analysts anticipated the emergence of additional cryptocurrency ETFs, with speculations centering on Ethereum being the next in line to receive an ETF after Bitcoin.

However, despite prominent financial services firms such as BlackRock, Grayscale, VanEck, Fidelity and others submitting applications for an Ethereum Spot ETF, approval from the US SEC has been delayed consistently.

The regulatory agency disclosed in a recent filing on Tuesday, April 23, that it would be designating a longer period to decide on its appropriate mode of action regarding the Spot Ethereum ETF proposed by Franklin Templeton and Grayscale. The commission had scheduled June 11 as the new deadline to approve or reject the Ethereum Spot ETF proposals.

This move appears to be anticipated by other crypto and financial experts in the industry, as analysts from Standard Chartered as well as VanEck CEO, Jan Van Eck had previously expressed skepticism about the likelihood of the US SEC authorizing Ethereum Spot ETFs soon.

Ethereum is now trading at $3,120. Chart: TradingView

Is The New Listing A Sign Of An Imminent Approval?

The recent addition of Franklin Templeton’s proposed Ethereum Spot ETF in the DTCC listing is seen as an initial step in the trading process and does not guarantee approval from the SEC which holds sole authority to green light or reject such investment products.

Before the approval of Spot Bitcoin ETFs, the DTCC had listed BlackRock’s previously proposed Spot Bitcoin ETF on its platform, fueling speculations and raising hopes of possible approval by the SEC. However, the clearing and settlement company later removed BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF from its platform, clarifying that the listing did not imply the SEC’s endorsement of Spot Bitcoin ETF applications.

Amidst the anticipation of an Ethereum Spot ETF approval, the US SEC has remained ambiguous about its position. Senior Bloomberg ETF analyst, Eric Balchunas also revealed earlier in March that their odds for an Ethereum ETF approval was only 25%, reflecting a rather pessimistic outlook.

Overall, the broader crypto market is still closely monitoring the developments surrounding Franklin Templeton and other financial firm’s Ethereum Spot ETF applications along with the SEC’s final decision, acknowledging a potential approval as a significant step forward in the digital asset sector.

“We recognize that in our movement toward digital, we had over-rotated away from wholesale a little more than we intended,” Donahoe told CNBC’s Sara Eisen from Paris. “We’ve corrected that. We’re investing heavily with our retail partners. They were all here over the last couple of days; they’re very excited about the innovation pipeline.”

Over the past several years, Nike has worked to transform its business from a brand that primarily sold its sneakers and clothes in department stores and specialty athletic shops to one that does the bulk of its sales direct to consumers.

The strategy allowed Nike to earn far more from its sales and gain better insights about its customers through data collection. Over the last four years, Donahoe said Nike tripled its mobile and digital business from about 10% of overall sales to 30%.

However, it’s a tough strategy to pull off and one that can pressure margins in the short term. Shifting to a direct model is capital-intensive and saddled Nike with the headaches of returns and owned inventory, which had typically fallen on wholesale partners.

On top of that, department stores and specialty shops are massive customer acquisition engines. Without them, brands have to spend more on marketing, which has become more expensive and challenging to do online.

Some analysts have said Nike’s decision to shun wholesale partners was a mistake. They argued it set the company back and is part of the reason why it fell behind on innovation and products. It also had a negative impact on Foot Locker, which has long relied on Nike to drive sales and now doesn’t receive the same assortment of products that it once did.

In its push toward a direct model, Nike temporarily cut ties with retailers like Macy’s and DSW, but it restored those partnerships last year as it began to shift its tone on wholesalers.

The change comes at a difficult time for Nike, which has faced criticism over its product assortment and losing market share to upstarts like On Running and Hoka. In December, it announced a broad restructuring plan to reduce costs by about $2 billion over the next three years. It also cut its sales guidance as it warned of softer demand in the quarters ahead.

Two months later, Nike said it was shedding 2% of its workforce, or more than 1,500 jobs, so it could invest in its growth areas, such as running, the women’s category and the Jordan brand.

During Friday’s interview, Donahoe reiterated that consumers today “want to get what they want, when they want it, how they want it” — a refrain he has used over the past year when discussing Nike’s shifting sales strategy.

“There’s not digital shoppers versus physical retail shoppers. There’s not shoppers who only shop in mono-brand stores versus multibrand shoppers,” Donahoe said. “Consumers want to get what they want across multiple channels. … The consumer will have a choice to come to Nike directly digitally, to come to a Nike door or to go to one of our wholesale [partners].”

Apple’s website for the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 said “currently unavailable” when viewed Thursday. The page now features a promotional image for the Apple Watch SE, a lower-cost model first introduced in 2022 that is unaffected by the patent dispute.

Apple said earlier this week that it would stop selling its latest Watch models on its website on Thursday and in Apple stores starting after Sunday. The Apple Watch SE is still available from Apple and retailers will be able to sell the latest models while they still have stock.

“Following December 24, 2023, Apple no longer sells Apple Watch units in the United States with the ability to measure blood oxygen,” according to fine print on Apple’s product pages.

The pause in sales is in response to orders from the International Trade Commission in October that found that the device’s blood oxygen sensor had infringed on intellectual property from Masimo, a medical technology company that sells to hospitals. Apple will be prevented from importing the devices, which are manufactured in China.

The pause means Apple is not selling the latest models of one of its most important products in its largest market during the busiest time of the year for Apple sales.

It could also make it more difficult for users to get repairs for existing watches by preventing swaps of broken older hardware not under warranty, according to Bloomberg News.

An Apple representative didn’t immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

Apple shares were down slightly during trading on Thursday.

President Joe Biden could still veto the ITC ban before Christmas, but a White House spokesperson said earlier this week that the decision would fall to U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai.

“We’re tracking this case and the Dec. 25 deadline,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Tuesday.

The U.S. trade representative “has the President’s delegated authority to make these determinations,” Jean-Pierre said, adding that Ambassador Katherine Tai is “carefully considering all of the factors in this case.”
