BEIJING — The Iran war is likely to take center stage in the summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and China’s Xi Jinping, leaving less scope to resolve issues like tariffs and rare earth supplies.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has already said that Iran will be a topic in the meetings, which are due to take place May 14 and 15. And earlier this week, China hosted Iran’s foreign minister for the first time since the war began in late February — raising hopes for a peace deal, sending oil prices lower and fueling stock-market gains.

The U.S. government declined China’s invitation to organize industry-specific meetings between senior Chinese leaders and U.S. CEOs, thinking it could make American businesses appear too close to Beijing, according to a U.S. executive with direct knowledge of the arrangements. As of Tuesday, the White House had yet to formally invite executives to join Trump on the trip, and a proposed list of two dozen leaders could be halved, the person added.

Boeing and Citigroup CEOs are among those set to accompany Trump, two separate sources said. The U.S. aircraft giant is expected to seal its first large order from China in nearly a decade around the summit.

Xi has hosted a dozen national leaders this year, from the U.K. to South Korea — who often bring large business delegations. Still, corporations may not object to the decreased focus if it resolves a large geopolitical overhang for them.

An end to the Iran war would be a “great relief to global business,” said Hai Zhao, a director of international political studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a state-affiliated think tank. It would “be remembered as very much the success” for the Trump-Xi summit.

However, the U.S. and Iran have traded fire in the Strait of Hormuz again, each blaming the other for initiating the attack. Just a few days earlier, a Chinese-owned oil tanker was also struck, according to Chinese media outlet Caixin. CNBC was unable to independently confirm the report.

If a smaller group of executives joins Trump’s visit to China, it would contrast with the president’s trip to Saudi Arabia last May, when more than 30 U.S. executives accompanied him. When Trump visited China during his first term in 2017, the last sitting U.S. president to do so, nearly 30 CEOs accompanied him – signing 37 major deals worth more than $250 billion.

But the expected images of Trump and Xi together may still send a signal within China that it’s more acceptable again to engage with U.S. businesses, said Michael Hart, president of the Beijing-based American Chamber of Commerce of China.

“Since U.S. military actions earlier this year, Chinese officials have been more hesitant to engage with the American business community,” he said.

China welcomes U.S. business expansion and hopes the companies can keep advancing bilateral economic relations, the foreign ministry told CNBC. China’s commerce ministry didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, the urgency of some business-related issues is declining. Both countries are backpedaling on recent confrontation around U.S. sanctions and tech, while eyeing cooperation on the growing security threat of AI, according to reports.

And some progress may still be made. Trump is expected to notch deals on Chinese purchases of U.S. soybeans and Boeing airplanes, according to Scott Kennedy, senior advisor and trustee chair in Chinese business and economics at the U.S.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

He also anticipates Trump will discuss U.S. plans to establish trade and investment organizations – called “boards” – to handle specific bilateral issues.

“The meeting most likely will solidify the advantages China has gained over the past year,” Kennedy said.

Beijing’s focus will likely be on tariffs, Taiwan’s status and U.S. restrictions on Chinese access to advanced technology, Kennedy said. China was the first major country to retaliate against tariffs announced by the Trump administration in April 2025.

Meanwhile, changes to China’s increasingly tight rare earths export controls would be felt worldwide, and they affect all countries, not just the U.S.

Users on the prediction markets platform think that there’s a more than 50% chance that prices will reach nearly $127 per barrel this year, far higher than the current closing high of nearly $113 per barrel on April 7.

Traders also estimate there’s a 63% chance that prices will cross $120 per barrel.

While WTI prices remain off their highs from before the U.S. and Iran announced a ceasefire to the war in the Middle East, they’re considerably higher than their lows of $82.59 on April 17.

Prices are above again $100, and Brent crude prices hit a new post-war high this week. However, oil prices retreated on Friday after Iran sent a revised peace proposal to the U.S., though President Donald Trump said he’s not satisfied with the country’s proposals.

Some of the post-ceasefire decline in WTI oil prices has been reversed as there’s no clear path to Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz nor to the U.S. ending its naval blockade of the passageway.

While traders think the highs in oil prices haven’t been hit this year, the range they think prices will trade has shrunk. In early April, before the ceasefire, traders thought there was a more than 50% chance prices traded above $150 per barrel. Traders now place just a 26% chance of that happening.

The Breakwave Tanker Shipping ETF (BWET), a little-known exchange-traded fund tied to crude oil tanker freight rates, has surged more than 600% year-to-date as war and disruption in key maritime corridors drive shipping rates sharply higher.

“I started getting a lot of questions about this ETF, like, what is up with it? What kind of performance is this?” Cinthia Murphy, VettaFi director of research, said on this week’s CNBC’s “ETF Edge.”

BWET is a $30 million portfolio that launched in May 2023, in an ETF market that has over $13 trillion in assets.

Murphy explained the scale of the move has forced the market to rethink where the real leverage in energy resides. Rather than focusing only on oil prices, which have been extremely volatile this year, investors may be looking toward infrastructure that the world relies on to move energy commodities.

“It really is a story about shipping costs,” Murphy said. “Anytime you have some big disruption to shipping … freight futures skyrocket and there’s one ETF that captures pretty much that performance better than anybody else.”

Murphy said the ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have proven to hold the ability to send freight futures higher quickly while markets reprice the risk of moving commodities through the region, and not only oil. For example, the Baltic Exchange Dry Index is up over 6% for the past week and 41% since the beginning of the year.

But, “it’s really moving that oil around that has been a big story,” said Paul Baiocchi, head of fund sales & strategy at SS&C Technologies.

Oil prices have risen sharply this year, with the U.S. Oil Fund (USO) up close to 90% as of Friday, and the SPDR State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) up over 23% as energy stocks have posted strong gains. But those moves seem modest compared with the spike in freight futures, and the surge in BWET began even before the outbreak of war in the Middle East, with BWET up over 1,000% in the past year.

“Of course, oil prices have been dramatically higher and the energy sector in general, energy equities, every part of the energy story this year has been a big blockbuster year,” Murphy said. But she added, “BWET is really standing [out].”

Wall Street equity research teams are also placing more attention on surging tanker stocks.

At the same time, Baiocchi said the rally ties into a broader theme that is being played out throughout global markets: underinvestment in energy infrastructure and the growing need to secure more resilient supply chains.

“[We talked] about this idea that even before the Iran conflict, a lot of these global commodities markets were fraught, and if nothing else, this conflict has exacerbated a lot of the challenges,” Baiocchi said.

That includes not just oil transport, but the broader buildout of energy systems. “Countries and companies around the world will be scrambling to find more stable sources of energy,” he said.

Even as BWET draws outsized attention, ETF experts caution that freight rates are inherently volatile and driven by short-term shocks. But as geopolitical conflict continues to reshape global trade, more investors are looking beyond commodity prices and to the system that determines how commodities move to market for investing profits.

Federal Reserve officials at their March meeting still expected to lower interest rates this year, even with a high level of uncertainty from the Iran war and tariffs, according to minutes released Wednesday.

Most of the participants said the war could result in the need for easier monetary policy if rising gas prices hit the labor market and consumer wallets.

Policymakers said they would need to remain “nimble” as they weighed the impact the war had on inflation, which continued to hold above the Fed’s target, and hiring, which has been mostly flat over the past year.

“Many participants judged that, in time, it would likely become appropriate to lower the target range for the federal funds rate if inflation were to decline in line with their expectations,” the minutes said.

The consensus anticipated one cut this year, unchanged from the last update in December.

The summary then noted caution over “a further softening in labor market conditions, which could warrant additional rate cuts, as substantially higher oil prices could reduce households’ purchasing power, tighten financial conditions, and reduce growth abroad.”

Ultimately, the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee voted 11-1 to keep the benchmark overnight borrowing rate targeted in a range between 3.5%-3.75%.

Possible hike?

The consensus was to keep rates steady as they observed conditions unfold, with officials also expressing concern that the Middle East hostilities could result in sustained inflation that could require rate hikes.

“Most participants commented that it was too early to know how developments in the Middle East would affect the U.S. economy and judged it prudent to continue to monitor the situation and assess the implications for the appropriate stance of monetary policy,” the minutes said.

The March 17-18 meeting came just a weeks after the U.S. and Israel launched an attack on Iran that triggered a surge in energy costs and renewed fears of a spike in inflation. A ceasefire announced Tuesday evening led to a sharp drop in oil, though the durability of the agreement is still highly in question.

In assessing conditions so far, meeting participants said they still expected inflation to continue moving toward the Fed’s 2% target, despite the tumult the war caused. They noted that tariffs remain a threat, though most see the impact of the duties as temporary when it comes to computing inflation.

Chair Jerome Powell said in a recent public appearance that raising rates now to stave off an inflation spike could have negative longer-term effects given the lagged impact of Fed rate moves.

At the same time, officials expressed concern about the labor market, which has been creating enough jobs to keep the unemployment rate steady. However, job growth has come almost exclusively from health care-related sectors, raising concerns about stability and potential for growth.

“The vast majority of participants judged that risks to the employment side of the mandate were skewed to the downside,” the minutes said. “In particular, many participants cautioned that, in the current situation of low rates of net job creation, labor market conditions appeared vulnerable to adverse shocks.”

Markets largely expect the Fed to remain on hold through the rest of the year. However, the ceasefire led traders to raise the odds for a potential cut.

Broadly speaking, the economy has showed signs of slowing, causing some on Wall Street to raise their expectations for a recession.

Gross domestic product rose at just a 0.7% pace in the fourth quarter of 2025 and is on track for just a 1.3% growth rate in the first quarter of 2026.

Delta on Wednesday forecast adjusted per-share earnings of $1 to $1.50 in the second quarter, compared with the $1.41 a share analysts were expecting, with revenue up in the “low-teens” percentage points compared with a year earlier, above the roughly 10% Wall Street forecast. Capacity will likely be flat on the year, Delta said.

Delta said its fuel bill will be $2 billion higher this quarter because of the spike in costs.

Delta is the first of the major U.S. airlines to report first-quarter results, though United Airlines, Delta and others had already been trimming capacity for the current quarter.

Less capacity can mean higher airfare, which is already on the rise. Delta also joined JetBlue Airways and United in raising its checked bag fees on Tuesday. Carriers around the world are even more affected by the rise in fuel costs because of their countries’ reliance on imports and have added fuel surcharges or announced fare increases.

Bastian said that demand remains strong, despite the higher travel costs, and that Delta’s customer base continues to spend on travel, particularly for higher-end products like more spacious seats.

Speaking to reporters, Bastian said it isn’t clear if or when customers will pull back.

Here’s what Delta reported for the first quarter compared with what Wall Street was expecting, based on consensus estimates from LSEG:

Earnings per share: 64 cents adjusted vs. 57 cents expected

Revenue: $14.2 billion adjusted vs. $14 billion expected

Delta owns a refinery where it turns crude oil into jet fuel and other products, like gasoline and diesel, giving it an advantage over other carriers.

“We don’t know where fuel is going to go, but to the extent fuel stays elevated, that refinery will continue to help us,” Bastian told reporters.

Delta expects to post $1 billion in pretax profit in the second quarter and receive a $300 million benefit from its refinery, the carrier said, a major tail wind for the facility near Philadelphia that it acquired in April 2012 from Phillips 66.

The rise in jet fuel prices since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28, has been sharper than the run-up in crude oil. Jet fuel prices in major U.S. cities were up nearly 88% since Feb. 27, through April 6, according to the Airlines for America industry group, citing Argus data.

Delta expects all-in fuel costs of $4.30 per gallon in the second quarter.

Bastian said the airline isn’t walking back its full-year forecast but isn’t updating it either because of uncertainty of fuel prices. Delta projected potentially record earnings this year when it released its last earnings in January.

“As we gain more knowledge of the impact of the duration of the fuel spike over the course of the next couple months, we’ll be in a better position,” Bastian said.

Oil futures were sharply lower on Wednesday after President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he agreed to suspend planned attacks on Iranian infrastructure for two weeks, backing off of threats to imminently order the destruction of Iran’s “whole civilization,” and Iran agreed to open the key Strait of Hormuz shipping channel.

Meanwhile, premium travel demand continues to drive results. Delta said premium ticket revenue, from first class and other more expensive options compared with coach, was up 14% in the first quarter over last year. Main cabin revenue increased for the first time since late 2024.

Capacity, however, fell 3% in the first three months of 2026 compared with last year “as continued investment in fleet renewal drove premium seat mix higher.” the company said.

Rival United, the second-most profitable U.S. carrier, has been trying to increase its premium seat footprint, investing in new onboard technology, revamped suites and other perks.

“I think they’re smart trying to copy us,” Bastian said.

Bastian said Delta did see a drop in some business travel during the hourslong Transportation Security Administration lines at airports last month due to the partial government shutdown but that travel segment appears to have recovered.

For the first quarter, Delta posted a net loss of $289 million, or 44 cents per share, compared with net income of $240 million, or 37 cents, a year earlier, as its costs rose in 2026.

Adjusted for one-time items Delta had net income of $423 million, or 64 cents a share, up from $291 million, or 45 cents a share, during the same period last year.

Revenue, adjusted for third-party sales from its refinery and other items, rose more than 9% to $14.2 million in the first quarter.

Correction: This story has been updated to reflect that Delta reported adjusted net income of $423 million. A previous version of this story described it as net income.

As the world’s oil traders parsed satellite images and official statements for clues on the fate of the Strait of Hormuz, one research firm seems to have taken a different approach: It claims that it sent an analyst directly into the conflict zone.

Citrini Research, which issued a market-shaking bearish call on artificial intelligence earlier this year, said it dispatched an analyst to Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, where the person traveled by boat to observe shipping activity firsthand amid escalating tensions between Iran and the U.S. What the analyst claims to have found challenges the dominant narrative gripping global markets that the critical oil artery is effectively shut.

Instead, the analyst, who remains anonymous due to the sensitivity of the activity, found that vessels are still moving through the strait, with traffic picking up in recent days to roughly 15 ships per day, according to the firm’s report posted on Substack. While far below normal levels, the flow suggests the disruption is partial and evolving rather than absolute.

“Tankers passing through four or five a day, completely dark on AIS. The volume, they said, is higher than what the data suggests, and it’s been accelerating in the past couple days through the Qeshm channel,” Citrini’s post said.

AIS is a ship-tracking system that broadcasts a vessel’s location, speed, identity and route. Citrini asserts that the actual shipping volume is higher than reported data as many ships turn off their transponders and are not visible on official tracking systems.

Citrini didn’t immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comments.

Based on the Substack post, the analyst’s interviews with fishermen, smugglers and regional officials point to a system in which Iran is selectively allowing ships to pass. Tankers are required to secure approval before transiting waters near Iranian territory, creating what the firm described as a “functional checkpoint” rather than a blockade, Citrini said in its post.

“This should drive home that what we’ve described as our view of the conflict is nuanced – it doesn’t fit neatly into ‘strait open crude down’ or ‘strait closed crude parabolic,'” the firm said.

To be sure, the findings are based on a single field trip and anecdotal accounts that are difficult to independently verify, particularly given limited transparency in the region.

The firm expects a more prolonged disruption that embeds a lasting risk premium into oil markets. That view underpins a preference for longer-dated crude exposure, with the firm favoring December 2026 WTI contracts over the front month.

“We think the disruption is longer and the new normal involves a permanent risk premium, but that we’ll likely see as high as 50% of pre-conflict traffic within the next 4-6 weeks,” Citrini said.

Happy Monday. My alma mater is in tonight’s March Madness championship game. While I’m not a big sports person, I have too many friends whose brackets depend on this game to not mention the Wolverines.

S&P 500 futures are higher this morning after a winning week.

Here are five key things investors need to know to start the trading day:

1. Deal wishes

Axios reported that the U.S. and Iran were considering terms with mediators for a potential 45-day ceasefire. Reuters reported that the two countries have received a plan to establish a ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Here’s what to know:

2. Job interview

Mark your calendars: The Senate Banking Committee will have a hearing on April 16 for Kevin Warsh, Trump’s pick to lead the Federal Reserve, a source familiar with the matter told CNBC.

Both Warsh and a committee spokesperson declined to comment, and the committee has not put the hearing on its public calendar. As CNBC’s Matt Peterson notes, a hearing would come despite a promise by Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., to block the nomination amid the criminal probe of Fed Chair Jerome Powell.

Meanwhile, monetary policymakers got some good news on Friday: nonfarm payrolls blew past economists’ expectations with growth of 178,000 in March. That’s a reversal from the drop of more than 130,000 seen in the prior month.

As CNBC’s Jennifer Elias reports, the technology giant — which is also one of the world’s largest publicly traded companies — is facing a host of questions as it enters its second half-century.

The iPhone creator has to plan for succession and maintain its position as a premium brand. On top of that, it’s grappling with difficulties in its supply chain, as the U.S.-China relationship comes under intensifying pressure.

But there’s perhaps no larger question for Apple than its place within artificial intelligence. While the company is seen as relinquishing its multi-year lead on the technology, former Apple insiders said there’s still hope.

China was once considered a sought-after market for American films. But as CNBC’s Sarah Whitten writes, government content controls and broader Hollywood trends have made the region less desirable.

More than a dozen films grossed over $100 million in China in 2017, but only two flicks have reached that milestone annually over the last several years. That’s due in part to the end of the U.S.-China Film Agreement and the expansion of domestic film production in the Asian country.

That isn’t stopping U.S. studios from taking their works to the world’s second-largest economy. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” “Mortal Kombat II” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2″ are all slated to hit Chinese theaters this year.

United’s new fee will be $45 to check a first bag on most domestic itineraries if the traveler pays ahead of time and $50 if they pay within 24 hours of their flight.

“United is raising first and second checked bag fees by $10 for customers traveling in the U.S., Mexico and Canada and Latin America beginning with tickets purchased Friday, April 3,” the carrier said.

United last raised checked bag fees in February 2024 and, like other carriers, is trying to cover the recent surge in jet fuel costs.

Fuel prices for Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and New York averaged $4.88 a gallon on Thursday nearly double the price since the day before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Feb.28, according to data from Argus published by industry group Airlines for America.

JetBlue Airways on Monday hiked its checked bag fees at least $4 per bag — and up to $9 per bag, depending on when a customer’s travel is booked — CNBC first reported.

Competitors often follow suit with such fee increases. There are loopholes, however. Airline credit cards often give customers a free checked bag when they’re on domestic itineraries in coach and it usually comes as a perk with elite frequent flyer status. Also, first-class seats generally include a free checked bag.

“United Chase credit card holders, MileagePlus Premier members, active military members and customers traveling in premium cabins can still check a bag for free, and customers in most markets will still enjoy a $5 discount if they prepay for their bags online 24 hours before their flight,” United said.

Higher fuel is showing up at gas stations and other sectors, too. Amazon is adding a 3.5% “fuel and logistics-related surcharge” to fees it collects from third-party sellers who use its fulfillment services, CNBC reported earlier Thursday.

Federal Reserve Governor Stephen Miran on Monday continued his campaign for lower interest rates, telling CNBC that policymakers should disregard the current energy price spike unless there are signs it will have longer-lasting impacts.

“If I saw a wage-price spiral, or I saw evidence that inflation expectations are starting to pick up, then I would get worried about it,” he said during a “Squawk on the Street” interview. “There’s no evidence of it thus far, and you can move the monetary policy rate all you want — today tomorrow — but it’s not going to affect inflation the next couple of months.”

Citing market-based indicators, Miran said inflation expectations remain well anchored, despite the jump in oil to more than $100 a barrel and a price shock at the pump that has pushed gasoline higher by more than $1 a gallon.
