“This is not a reactive measure, it is a deliberate evolution to reduce complexity, raise the performance bar, and build a leaner, more agile SentinelOne,” CEO Tomer Weingarten told analysts on the earnings call Thursday.

Over the last few months, he said SentinelOne has restructured its teams and already seen “meaningful productivity” gains from ramped AI use.

In a securities filing, the company said it expects a one-time $25 million charge tied to the layoffs. The company had over 3,000 employees at the end of April.

Tech companies are increasingly slashing headcount as AI forces businesses to reallocate resources to keep pace with innovation. New AI tools are also allowing businesses to automate workloads.

Earlier this week, Israel-based web developer Wix slashed a fifth of its workforce due to AI and the strength of the Israeli shekel. Cisco downsized its headcount by nearly 5% earlier this month and Block roughly halved its workforce in February. Software firm Atlassian cut about 1,600 jobs in March.

SentinelOne’s workforce cuts also came alongside lackluster guidance for the current quarter and full year.

The company said it anticipates between $289 million and $291 million in revenue, versus the $292 million expected by LSEG analysts. SentinelOne reiterated its full-year outlook, expecting revenue between $1.195 billion and $1.205 billion. That came up short of a $1.21 billion forecast.

“Combined with growing criticalness of category, this should have been a Q where it sustained recent gains; lack of material guidance raise leaves in holding pattern,” wrote analysts at Morgan Stanley.

Cybersecurity companies are in the middle of a significant inflection, spurred by Anthropic’s Mythos model and the rise of autonomous AI agents that are capable of exploiting vulnerabilities faster than ever before. That’s forcing businesses to scale their security defenses and invest in newer tools.

At the same time, some cybersecurity stocks have sold off this year, getting swept up in broader market fears that new AI tools will displace software businesses.

The global reductions began Monday and will impact about 500 to 600 employees, largely in Austin, Texas, and Warren, Michigan, according to a person familiar with the plans who was not authorized to speak publicly about the layoffs.

GM confirmed the cuts, which were first reported by Bloomberg News, but declined to give specific details about the actions.

“GM is transforming its Information Technology organization to better position the company for the future. As part of that work, we have made the difficult decision to eliminate certain roles globally. We are grateful for the contributions of the employees affected and are committed to supporting them through this transition,” the automaker said in an emailed statement.

GM reported employing about 68,000 salaried workers globally as of the end of last year, including 47,000 white-collar employees in the U.S.

Despite Monday’s cuts, GM is still hiring IT workers. The company has 82 open IT positions that include jobs working in artificial intelligence, motorsports and autonomous vehicles, according to the Detroit automaker’s careers website.

GM in recent years has routinely reevaluated its salaried workforce, based on expected needs and skill sets. In October, the company laid off more than 200 Computer-Aided Design, or CAD, engineers due to “business conditions.”

One of Lenskart’s early institutional investors has pared its stake in the company in open market on Monday. A regulatory disclosure filed with stock exchanges showed Alpha Wave Ventures II LP sold 4.3 crore shares, equivalent to 2.46% stake, in Lenskart through an open market transaction after crossing the 2% disclosure threshold on May 8.

Before the sale, Alpha Wave Ventures II and persons acting in concert together held 12.37 crore shares, or 7.13% stake in Lenskart. Following the transaction, their combined holding has come down to 8.07 crore shares, translating into 4.67% stake in the omnichannel eyewear retailer.

As per the disclosure, Alpha Wave Ventures II’s direct holding has dropped from 3.7% to 1.24%, while its affiliate Alpha Wave Ventures LP continues to hold 3.43%.

Based on Lenskart’s disclosed equity capital of 173.64 crore shares, the sale of 4.3 crore shares represents one of the larger secondary stake transactions in the company in recent months.

Lenskart is India’s largest vertically integrated, technology-led, omnichannel eyewear platform, addressing a structurally underpenetrated eyewear category in India (53% of population impacted, modest 35% penetration).

Live Events

Lenskart has built strong moats in a difficult-to-scale category through a centralized, highly automated manufacturing facility and logistics network, strong backward integration, which provides significant cost advantage, large omnichannel presence, leveraging technology to ease constraints in scaling up and house-of- brands architecture spanning mass to premium eyewear, to achieve its goal of making quality eyewear accessible and affordable.

Motilal Oswal expects Lenskart to deliver a CAGR of 25%/53% in pro forma consolidated revenue/pre-IND AS EBITDA, largely driven by volume growth, product margin improvement, and 625 bp operating leverage-driven margin expansion over FY25-28 (320 bp over 9MFY26-FY28).

The broker initiated coverage on Lenskart with a Buy rating and a target of Rs 600, premised on DCF-implied 55x FY28E. “Our valuations for Lenskart are at a premium to other leading retailers, but we believe the multiples are justifiable, given Lenskart’s superior growth profile, limited organized competition and long growth runway,” it said recently.

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway disclosed a surprise $1.6 billion bet on troubled health insurer UnitedHealth Group in the second quarter, while paring back its Apple and Bank of America holdings and fully exiting its T-Mobile US position, a regulatory filing showed Thursday.

The Omaha-based conglomerate bought more than 5 million UnitedHealth shares during the quarter, sending the stock up as much as 9.6% in post-market trading. The stake ranks as Berkshire’s 18th-largest equity position, despite the insurer’s battered image, its shares were down nearly 50% this year before the filing, amid a Justice Department investigation into Medicare billing, a CEO resignation, and repeated profit warnings.

Apple, BofA cuts; T-Mobile exit

Berkshire trimmed its Apple holding by about 20 million shares, reducing the stake’s value by $9.2 billion during the period. Even after the cut, Apple remains Berkshire’s largest equity position by market value.

The company also sold 26 million Bank of America shares, taking its stake to roughly 8%, and liquidated its $1 billion investment in T-Mobile US.

Other portfolio moves

The filing revealed Berkshire building positions in steelmaker Nucor and homebuilder Lennar, while selling shares of D.R. Horton. Smaller stakes were added in outdoor advertising company Lamar Advertising and security products maker Allegion. Some of these changes were previously withheld from public view after the Securities and Exchange Commission granted Berkshire’s request for confidential treatment.

Buffett, who turns 95 this month and will step down as Berkshire’s chief executive at year-end, has long criticized the U.S. healthcare system as a “tapeworm” on the economy. While Berkshire’s $300 billion equity portfolio is widely associated with Buffett’s investing style, smaller and newer positions are often attributed to his deputies, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, though Buffett maintains final say over capital allocation.

The Chinese toymaker first gained popularity with its “blind box” concept, in which consumers buy unmarked boxes — which can cost from about $5 to $10 each — for a chance at getting a unique figurine and building a collection.

People’s Daily, the Chinese Communist Party’s official newspaper, on Friday criticized the “blind box” phenomenon, advocating for stricter regulation. The article did not mention Pop Mart by name and focused more on children and young people who were spending heavily on unmarked packets to collect cards.

China’s customs agency this month also highlighted several times on social media how it stopped cases of Labubu copycats from crossing the border.

Pop Mart’s Hong Kong-listed shares were last down more than 5%, extending their slide from the previous session when they had slumped 5.3%. That’s put the high-flying stock on track for its first negative week since early May — with losses of more than 13% so far. Its year-to-date gains stand at over 160%.

Morgan Stanley said in a note late Wednesday it was replacing Pop Mart with insurance company PICC P&C in the firm’s China and Hong Kong focus list.

The investment bank did not elaborate on why it removed Pop Mart shares. The firm on June 10 had raised its price target on the toy company to 302 Hong Kong dollars ($38.47), up from 224 HKD, on expectations that Pop Mart still had room to grow in the long term.

“We think the market has fully factored in Pop Mart’s exponential growth in 2025 but may not have strong conviction on the long-term outlook,” equity analyst Dustin Wei and a team said in the June 10 report.

“That said, in view of its lofty valuation, we do not expect this level of outperformance to continue in the next few quarters,” the report said.

Pop Mart shares hit a record intra-day high of 283.40 HKD on June 12.

Pop Mart has also released Labubu stuffed toys, pillows and related merchandise to capture demand. A 4-foot-tall Labubu sold for the equivalent of $170,000 at an auction in Beijing earlier this month.
Sales at Levi’s brand were up 5% during its fiscal third quarter — the biggest gain in two years — but overall revenue came in flat and lower than Wall Street had expected.

Shares of Levi’s fell more than 8% in extended trading Wednesday.

Here’s how the denim-maker performed compared with what Wall Street was anticipating, based on a survey of analysts by LSEG:

Earnings per share: 33 cents adjusted vs. 31 cents expected

Revenue: $1.52 billion vs. $1.55 billion expected

The company’s reported net income for the three-month period that ended Aug. 25 was $20.7 million, or 5 cents per share, compared with $9.6 million, or 2 cents per share, a year earlier. Excluding one-time items, Levi’s posted earnings of $132 million, or 33 cents per share.

Sales came in at $1.52 billion, up slightly from $1.51 billion a year earlier.

With one quarter left to go in the fiscal year, Levi reaffirmed its full-year adjusted earnings per share guidance of $1.17 to $1.27, in line with expectations of $1.25, according to LSEG. It expects earnings per share to come in at the midpoint of that range.

It trimmed its revenue guidance and is now expecting sales to grow 1%, compared to a previous range of between 1% and 3%. That’s below the 2.3% growth that analysts had expected, according to LSEG.

So long, Dockers

Levi’s, which owns its namesake brand, as well as Dockers and Beyond Yoga, would have printed quite a different set of results had it not been for Dockers. It started that brand in 1986 to offer consumers an alternative to denim: khakis.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, khakis were a mainstay in most consumers’ closets but these days, it has fallen out of fashion. The efforts that Levi’s has made to differentiate Dockers led to too much overlap with the Levi’s brand, which has expanded into a lifestyle brand that offers a lot more products than jeans.

During the quarter, sales at Dockers were down 15% to $73.7 million while Beyond Yoga, the buzzy athleisure brand it acquired in 2021, saw sales grow 19% to $32.2 million.

“Over the last couple of years, the brand has underperformed. … We felt this was the right decision for the long term. Our view financially is the exit of Dockers will improve the company’s overall margins and also minimize volatility in top line growth,” Levi’s finance chief Harmit Singh told CNBC in an interview. “We believe the exit of Dockers will allow both Dockers and Levi’s to independently operate and maximize each other’s value independently.”

Levi’s has tapped Bank of America to lead the sale process.

Direct gains

Beyond Docker’s, Levi’s is making gains in growing its profitability as it continues to shift its focus to selling directly to consumers.

During the quarter, its gross margin rose by 4.4 percentage points, which Singh attributed to the direct-selling strategy, lower cotton costs and better products that didn’t need to be marked down to be sold.

Like other brands, Levi’s has been working to carve out its direct selling strategy and reach more customers through its own stores and websites rather than through wholesalers like Macy’s. The strategy is a boon to profits because the margins are higher and it also allows brands to get closer to their customers through data collection.

During the quarter, Levi’s direct channel was up about 10%, driven by strength in the U.S. and 16% growth in e-commerce. Overall, direct sales comprised 44% of total revenue and Levi’s wants to get that number closer to 55%.

Behind those numbers are a slew of splashy marketing campaigns, which include a new partnership the jeans brand announced with Beyoncé on Monday after the pop star released a song titled “LEVII’S JEANS” earlier this year on her country album.

“Our strategic decision was to actually have Beyoncé represent some of our core product. So in the first ad, chapter one, she’s in … 501s and an essential white t-shirt and it doesn’t get more Levi’s than that,” CEO Michelle Gass told CNBC. “Part of the success recipe for Levi’s has been and will continue to be us living in the center of culture and bringing together the icon of Beyoncé with the icon of Levi’s, I don’t think there’s any better example of that.”

Global woes

Sales in Levi’s Europe business came in higher than expected at $406.6 million, ahead of StreetAccount estimates of $392 million, but sales in the Americas and Asia came in lower. Levi’s posted $757.2 million in sales in the Americas, below the the $789.2 million that StreetAccount analysts had expected. In Asia, Levi’s saw revenue of $247.1 million, below StreetAccount estimates of $258 million.

“China was a drag,” Singh said of the region, which represents about 2% of Levi’s overall business. “It’s got this macro headwinds, and we had some execution issues. We’ve just changed the leadership in China and over time we still believe in the long-term potential of China.”

In the Americas, beyond a slowdown at Docker’s, sales were also impacted by one of Levi’s largest wholesale customers in Mexico, Singh said. During the quarter, the partner had a cybersecurity breach, which constrained shipping times and impacted sales. The region is also working through some “execution issues,” said Singh.

It was the company’s first earnings per share miss since May 2020 and first revenue miss since December 2020.

Comparable sales for the second quarter fell 1.2%, compared with an 8% increase a year earlier and well below the 1.2% growth that Wall Street analysts had expected, according to StreetAccount.

“While we are encouraged by many positive indicators across our business, our second quarter performance did not meet our expectations, driven primarily by a decline in comparable store sales. We are clear about the factors that adversely impacted our store performance, and we have actions underway to address the trends,” CEO Dave Kimbell said a press release.

During the company’s earnings call, Kimbell attributed the declining sales performance to four key factors, including an “unanticipated operational disruption” due to a change in store systems as well as disappointing impact from promotions.

The company also suffered from what Kimbell described as consumers who are increasingly cautious with their spending and from heightened competition in the beauty industry. Kimbell conceded that Ulta’s market share is being challenged and said although the company maintained its share in mass beauty during the most quarter, it lost share in the prestige beauty sector driven by makeup and hair categories, according to Circana data, cited by Kimbell.

It’s not uncommon for stores to experience a short-term negative sales impact due to competitors’ openings or cannibalization by new Ulta beauty stores, but Kimbell said the scale and pace of change now has been unusual, adding that 80% of stores have been impacted.

“We know we’re still in the midst of this…these competitive pressures will likely continue into the near term, but the positive signals…in our broader business, the guest engagement, the impact of newness, the impact of our new stores, the success of our salon business, the loyalty growth, all of those factors suggest to us and give us a lot of confidence that our business continues to have underlying strength and health,” Kimbell said.

The company now forecasts full-year same-store sales in a range of flat to 2% down, compared with prior guidance of 2% to 3% growth.

“Our updated outlook for sales assumes it will take more time for our actions to change the top line trajectory and that stores impacted by multiple competitive openings will continue to be pressured,” CFO Paula Oyibo said.

Ulta also now expects full-year revenue of $11 billion to $11.2 billion, down from previous guidance of $11.5 billion to $11.6 billion, and full-year earnings per share of $22.60 to $23.50, down from a previous forecast of $25.20 to $26.

Here’s how the beauty retailer performed in the period ended August 3 compared with what Wall Street was expecting, based on a survey of analysts by LSEG:

Earnings per share: $5.30 vs. $5.46 expected

Revenue: $2.55 billion vs. $2.61 billion expected

The company reported net income of $252.6 million, or $5.30 per share, compared with $300.1 million, or $6.02 per share, during the same quarter a year earlier.

Revenue rose to $2.55 billion, up from $2.53 billion a year earlier.

Earlier this month, Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway disclosed a $266 million stake in the beauty retailer, sending Ulta shares surging. For some analysts, it was validation that the stock was oversold after falling 32% in 2024 up to that point, tumbling 26% in the second quarter alone.

Shares of Ulta have been suffering since CEO Dave Kimbell warned of cooling beauty demand at an investor conference back in April. Kimbell said although a pullback was expected, it had hit the company “a bit earlier and bit bigger” than anticipated.

During the company’s first-quarter earnings call in May, Kimbell outlined plans to boost sales that spanned five key areas: product assortment, brand social relevance, enhancing the consumer digital experience, boosting the loyalty program and evolving the company’s promotional levers.

In the same call, Kimbell also said the beauty retailer later this year would be expanding its partnership with delivery service DoorDash, would start testing new gamification platforms and would activate new marketing technology to personalize customer shopping experience.

This time around, Kimbell said that executives has identified further opportunities within the attempted turnaround plan, such as relaunching Ulta’s own beauty collection and introducing new personalized product recommendations for consumers online. The company is also focusing on increasing rewards program value through member-only events and exclusive member-tiered offers.

Clarification: This story has been updated to clarify that Ulta Beauty forecast full-year earnings per share of $22.60 to $23.50, down from a previous forecast of $25.20 to $26.

Morgan Stanley was among the marquee investors to buy Cyient DLM stake as Cyient offloaded 14.5% stake in a Rs 879 cr bulk deal.

Promoter Cyient Ltd on Wednesday sold a partial stake in its listed subsidiary Cyient DLM through bulk deal. According to exchange data, Cyient has offloaded about 1.14 crore shares or 14.5% stake in the company.

The transaction was done at Rs 764.4 apiece, valuing the deal at Rs 879 crore.

Marquee funds including Morgan Stanley, HDFC Mutual Fund, Edelweiss MF, Nippon India MF, Citigroup among others picked up stake in the transaction.

As of June 2024, Cyient had held about 66.66% stake in the company as a promoter. The rest of 33.34% is held by the public shareholders.Among the public holdings, mutual funds own about 17% stake, while foreign portfolio investors have 4.88% in Cyient DLM.Cyient said the proceeds from the stake sale will be utilized for investment in the semiconductor business and debt repayment. The company hopes to expand the addressable market offering turnkey assets to clients in the medical, industrial and telecom industries. So far this year, shares of Cyient have been underperforming with negative 13% returns, while that of Cyient DLM witnessed steady growth at 15% year-to-date.

Brokerage Kotak Securities believes the opportunity of investing in Cyient looks attractive, albeit with a few risks.

“Success would boil down to a choice of programs and the ability to leverage IP to minimize custom chip design timelines. Maintain BUY and unchanged fair value of Rs 2,050,” it said in a report.

JP Morgan has also maintained an overweight rating on the stock with a target price of Rs 2,100 saying that it doesn’t expect promoter holding to go down in DML below 51%.

Cyient had recently established a wholly owned subsidiary to focus on a turnkey application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) design and chip sales through a fabless model for analog mixed-signal chips.

“The business has higher working capital requirements, given end-to-end responsibility being taken up by Cyient and revenue recognition on the sale of chips to clients. The architecture development and design phases would have significantly higher margins than the fab part of the engagement,” Kotak said.

Warren Buffett’s conglomerate sold 33.9 million shares of Bank of America for almost $1.5 billion in separate sales on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at an average selling price of $43.56, a regulatory filing showed.

It marked the first time since the fourth quarter of 2019 that the Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate has reduced the stake. Still, Bank of America remains Berkshire’s second-largest equity position after Apple, holding 999 million shares with a market value of almost $43 billion. Meanwhile, Berkshire is still Bank of America’s largest shareholder with a 10.8% stake.

Berkshire could be taking some profits as Bank of America has rallied 27.4% so far this year to its highest levels since March 2022. In the first quarter, Buffett trimmed Berkshire’s Apple holding by 13% for tax reasons following sizable gains.

Bank of America

Shares of Bank of America dipped slightly on Monday following the news.

Bathtub idea

The Oracle of Omaha’s purchase of Bank of America has become one of the most endearing Wall Street tales. In 2011, the legendary investor bought $5 billion worth of the bank’s preferred stock and warrants to shore up confidence in the lender as it grappled with losses related to subprime mortgages in the aftermath of the financial crisis.

Buffett later revealed that he got the idea while taking a bath in his tub.

“Incidentally, that BofA purchase, it literally was true that I was sitting in the bathtub when I got the idea of checking with … BofA, whether they’d be interested in that preferred,” he said at Berkshire’s annual meeting in 2017, when he first converted the warrants and added the bank stock to his portfolio.

The 93-year-old investor said he was attracted to CEO Brian Moynihan’s leadership and the profit-generating abilities of the franchise.

Moynihan later recalled that Buffett initially tried to reach him through Bank of America’s public phone line, but got rejected by the call center. Despite the snafu, the deal still came together within hours, he said.
