Perplexity is planning to go public in 2028 regardless of how the market receives the listings of Anthropic and OpenAI, CEO Aravind Srinivas told CNBC.

“Agnostic of these two companies, we were planning for something in 2028 so that still remains the case,” Srinivas said in an interview that aired on Tuesday.

Srinivas has previously said the company has no plans to go public before 2028. His latest comments suggest a more concrete timeline.

The CEO’s comments come after Claude developer Anthropic confidentially filed for an initial public offering last week. While there are no details on share pricing, Anthropic was last valued at nearly $1 trillion. OpenAI on Monday also confidentially filed for an IPO.

These listings, along with SpaceX this week, are going to be among the biggest in history and a test of investors’ appetite for these mega-IPOs.

“I certainly think there will be ripple effects if they don’t go well, like there is no sugar coating on that. The SpaceX IPO this week will definitely be a leading indicator to how Anthropic or OpenAI will go out,” Srinivas told CNBC.

“I think it’s important for the AI industry that these IPOs go well, and I actually think they will go well, because they’re doing well.”

The valuations of both Anthropic and OpenAI, known as frontier labs because their models are among the leading in the world, are under scrutiny from investors.

Srinivas said that both companies deserve their high valuations because “they are on the frontier.” A slowdown in the pace of innovation may dent their valuations, he said, adding that there is no sign of this happening now.

“If for six months you don’t see a model capability advance from one of these two companies, then it’s a problem for them,” Srinivas said.

One of the trends that has emerged is “tokenmaxxing,” where employees increase their AI use to signal productivity. “But people don’t want to just tokenmax, they really want to use whatever model is the best for that particular task,” Srinivas said.

“One thing he agreed to today, he’s going to order 200 jets. That’s a big thing. Boeings,” Trump told Fox News, referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping. “Boeing wanted 150, got 200.”

Analysts had expected a large Boeing aircraft order to come out of Trump’s visit to China, with Jefferies estimating the order could reach 500 aircraft. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg and other top executives from U.S. companies joined Trump on the trip.

The manufacturer hasn’t won a major order from China in almost a decade, but the country has been buying from Boeing’s main rival, Airbus.

Trump didn’t specify which aircraft China could purchase from Boeing, though analysts had expected a potential order to include hundreds of Boeing’s bestselling 737 Max planes.

Boeing and the White House didn’t immediately comment. Boeing shares closed 4.73% lower Thursday and were up 0.29% after hours.

Ortberg said on a company earnings call last month that the U.S.-China summit could be a “meaningful opportunity for us” that could include an aircraft order.

“I’m not going to give you the number of airplanes, but it’s a big number,” he said.

A major data center company has paused investment in AI infrastructure projects and data centers in the Middle East amid the Iran war, its CEO has told CNBC.

As oil prices have skyrocketed and supply chains have been heavily disrupted by conflict in the region, the future of huge digital infrastructure plans in the Middle East has become uncertain.

Assets in the region have become military targets and shortages are predicted for key materials needed for the AI infrastructure buildout. A data center in Abu Dhabi, operated by Oaktree-owned Pure DC, was struck by shrapnel from an Iranian attack.

The company’s CEO, Gary Wojtaszek, told CNBC that investment decisions had been paused on “all data center opportunities. No one wants to develop new data centers and put new GPUs in until things get settled.”

“No one’s going to run into a burning building, so to speak,” he said in an interview on Tuesday. “No one’s going to put in new additional capital at scale to do anything until everything settles down.”

The slowdown follows huge spending in the Middle East from governments, as well as hyperscalers and data center developers looking to take advantage of cheap electricity and land, as Gulf states positioned themselves as key players in the AI boom.

Pure DC still sees “long-term opportunity” in the Middle East, Wojtaszek said, adding that longer-term “planning and discussions” around data center projects there have continued.

<img decoding="async" src="https://image.cnbcfm.com/api/v1/image/108221081-1762260918138-gettyimages-2244357858-AFP_82VE6ZR.jpeg?v=1773160384&w=160&h=90" alt="Guests look at a model of the largest data center in the UAE under construction in Abu Dhabi as the Stargate initiative, a joint venture between G42, Microsoft, and OpenAI, during the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC) in Abu Dhabi on November 3, 2025.

Pure DC operates in the United Arab Emirates — where its Abu Dhabi data center on Yas Island was hit by shrapnel — and also has plans to expand in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

In March, AWS facilities in the UAE and Bahrain were hit by Iranian drones, causing outages in banking, payments, enterprise and consumer services.

“While the current macro political environment may have slowed sector investment, digital demand remains unchanged,” Wojtaszek said in a statement last week.

“The region’s ambitious national visions recognise the transformation enabled by digital government, enterprise modernisation and a future ready workforce.”

Data center workforce

As data centers become critical infrastructure, onsite workers are facing increased safety risks, with Pure DC offering some benefits to its Middle East staff, Wojtaszek said.

“We’re not mandating anyone be in the facility, they have to make a decision based on what’s right for them and their family…It’s a really tough situation,” he said, adding that workers who choose to remain on-site will get “additional comfort.”

Some of these perks include location flexibility for non-essential workers, who can leave the country with their families and work remotely, as well as additional welfare packs for all staff members.

The data center developer is now focusing on how to operate facilities remotely via electronic means.

Data center workers may increasingly see a “hazard pay rate” built into salaries in the future, William Self, chief workforce strategist at global workforce consulting firm Mercer, previously predicted.

“You could also imagine a certain psychic burden for people who are working in facilities that they know very well might be hot targets or bad actors, which could additionally increase the types of compensation packages that we would see to lure this population to these centers,” Self said.

Dutch company Euclyd, backed by the former CEO of chipmaking equipment giant ASML, is currently in discussions with investors for a round of at least 100 million euros ($118 million), its founder Bernardo Kastrup, told CNBC in an exclusive interview.

Elsewhere, U.K. startup Optalysys is planning a $100 million plus fundraise later this year and British company Fractile and France’s Arago are reportedly fundraising for nine-figure rounds. Fractile declined to comment and Arago did not respond to a request for comment. So far in 2026, investors have already funnelled more than $200 million into the Netherlands’ Axelera and the U.K.’s Olix.

Nvidia has rapidly become the world’s most valuable company as its GPUs, originally designed for gaming, have been repurposed for training AI models, but eyes are now turning to the most efficient ways to use those models, known as AI inference.

While the U.S. chip giant is developing semiconductor systems for that purpose too, a crop of new European startups are emerging that claim the tech they’re building can do it more efficiently.

“Inference is dominant now, and the existing GPU architecture wasn’t built for it in ways that matter most at scale,” Patrick Schneider-Sikorsky, director at the Nato Innovation Fund (NIF), which has invested in Fractile, told CNBC.

“The geopolitical tailwinds are obvious with U.S. export controls, concentration risk around [chipmaker] TSMC and a genuine European sovereign compute imperative are all pushing capital toward homegrown silicon.”

Euclyd is developing AI chips that operate in a system which it says can deliver 100x higher power efficiency for inference compared to Nvidia’s latest generation Vera Rubin chips. Nvidia did not respond to a request for comment from CNBC.

The Dutch startup, founded in 2024 by former ASML director Kastrup and counting ex-ASML CEO Peter Wennink as advisor and investor, has already raised a seed round of under 10 million euros and is now looking for fresh funds to scale its tech and begin supplying its first customers.

Euclyd is building chip systems to replace GPUs, but with a different architecture, Kastrup said. While GPUs spend time and energy moving data through the memory stack, Euclyd’s chips will process data in multiple places, which Kastrup says will increase efficiency for AI inference.

The company’s silicon systems for foundational models will reduce the energy, cost and footprint of AI data center infrastructure, he added. But, unlike Nvidia’s chips, Euclyd’s systems have not yet been proven in deployment at scale with commercial partners.

Euclyd is working on that. It has already developed a chip for AI inference, and is currently developing a multi-chiplet system — which will process faster than the current iteration of its product — which it aims to produce by 2028. It is in negotiations with four potential customers, said Kastrup, two of which the company hopes to begin supplying next year and two the year after.

Olix, which is developing photonics-based processors for AI, is also targeting initial customers next year, though it is currently in a research and development phase, Taavet Hinrikus, partner at Plural, an investor in the company, told CNBC.

Photonic processors are chip systems that use light to move data and, in some cases, to perform computation.

The startup will target any customers in need of inference services, Hinrikus said, including hyperscalers and governments. Olix did not respond to a request for comment.

The electronic architecture of chips, which include GPUs, is really “hitting the limits” in terms of how small they can be made, said Hinrikus. Chipmakers are trying to make processors smaller so they can fit more components on wafers and improve the economics of running systems on them.

“The heat [current chips] generate is becoming a major issue. We strongly believe that the photonics platforms will be the next paradigm,” he added.

Nvidia is also working hard to stay at the front of the pack. The chip giant spent more than $18 billion on research and development in its most recent full financial year, ending January 2026. In December, it acquired assets from AI inference startup Groq for $20 billion and announced in March it had invested $4 billion in two companies developing photonics technology.

Challenges to European startups remain

European startups face hurdles.

“Chip development timescales are long, the distance from tape-out to volume deployment is tough, and Europe’s foundry ecosystem still needs to mature,” the NIF’s Schneider-Sikorsky said.

Axelera CEO Fabrizio Del Maffeo told CNBC that governments in Europe are still “conservative” in investing in products from new companies and they don’t have an equivalent of DARPA, a U.S. Department of Defense agency research organization that funds startups and other tech projects.

Europe also lacks mechanisms to encourage consumption of locally built products and fragmented labor laws across borders make it harder to recruit European talent, he added.

European AI chip startups are behind in funding, raising $800 million so far in 2026, compared with $4.7 billion for their U.S. counterparts, according to Dealroom.

Nonetheless, European startups developing chips for AI inference to rival Nvidia are increasingly garnering interest from investors.

“We’re seeing it in deal flow and in the conversations we’re having with founders in the space,” Carlos Espinal, managing partner at Seedcamp, which backed chip startup Vaire Computing, told CNBC. “It’s no longer a niche bet. It’s becoming a core part of how people think about AI infrastructure.”

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Crypto market analyst Tony Severino took to X this week to explain the current Ethereum (ETH) cycle. The analyst highlighted how different this market cycle has been playing out, with ETH experiencing a prolonged corrective phase that is taking most investors and traders by surprise. Despite ongoing price volatility and bear market trends, Severino notes that Ethereum has yet to reach its final bottom, suggesting the possibility of further downside before a price floor is reached.

Analyst Explains Market Using Ethereum Cycle Theory

On April 7, Severino shared his Ethereum price analysis on X, comparing the current market cycle with past trends. The analyst noted that crypto cycles can run their full course without reaching a new all-time high. Additionally, he said that some cycles may only experience bear market rallies, in which prices consistently form higher lows and lower highs over time.

According to Severino, the biggest challenge most market participants face today is the inability to accept that a cycle may behave differently from historical trends. He added that, currently, many investors believe the Ethereum cycle has not happened, even though it behaved unexpectedly.

<img fetchpriority="high" data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-673677" src="https://bitcoinist.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Ethereum-chart-from-Tony-Severino.jpg?w=512&resize=512%2C337" alt="Ethereum" width="512" height="337" title="Ethereum Hitting A Bottom Or A Bearish Continuation?
Explaining this deviation through a cycle theory, Severino noted that within a full market cycle, there are several smaller degree cycles that make each timeline unique. He referred to these smaller cycles as “intracycle harmonics.” The analyst emphasized that the behavior of these harmonics can change depending on their position within the larger degree cycle. He further added that if an intracycle harmonic exceeds the amplitude of the larger-degree cycle, it could be a warning sign that ETH is in a period dominated by bear-market rallies.

Essentially, Severino suggests that Ethereum’s recent price gains may be temporary or misleading. Even when it seems to be rallying, the broader market structure implies that these moves are likely part of a prolonged weak cycle within a bear market. This means that investors should be cautious about expecting a new all-time high anytime soon.

Ethereum Bottom Not Reached Yet

In his analysis, Severino noted that despite ongoing bearish headwinds and weak action, the Ethereum price has not reached a market bottom yet. In his accompanying chart, he highlighted a pink line above the $2,000 level where ETH is currently holding firmly.

According to the analyst, every time Ethereum has broken this key support line, the cryptocurrency has declined to its market bottom. With ETH’s price now hovering slightly above key support, it suggests that the market could be approaching a floor soon.

Before reaching that point, Ethereum will likely experience another downturn. In his chart, Severino identifies $800 and a level around $440 as ETH’s next potential breakdown target or ultimate price bottoms if it falls below the critical line.

US President Donald Trump has repeated his threats to Iran over the course of several posts on social media and in comments to US and Israeli outlets.

Earlier, Trump posted an expletive-laden message online, saying Iran will “be living in hell” if the Strait of Hormuz is not opened by his 6 April deadline.

“Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped in one” if the key shipping lane is not reopened, he added.

In recent comments to Fox News, Trump reportedly said there’s a “good chance” a deal will be reached tomorrow – adding Iran is “negotiating now”.

“If they don’t make a deal and fast, I’m considering blowing everything up and taking over the oil,” he added, according to Fox’s chief foreign correspondent.

“A deal can be reached by Tuesday – if not, we’ll blow everything up there,” he then reportedly told Israel’s Channel 12 News.

Roughly 15% of TotalEnergies’ production is offline, as the war with Iran nears the one-month mark, but surging oil prices have more than made up for the lost barrels, chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné told CNBC in an exclusive interview.

With Brent crude trading solidly above $100 a barrel, much of the attention has focused on oil prices, but Pouyanné said the crisis is having a much larger impact on product prices.

“The Brent market is ok, but the products market, which is the one which impacts customers … is much higher than Brent,” he told CNBC at S&P Global’s CERAWeek energy conference in Houston. He added, the world has “never experienced” refining margins from products including Asian jet fuel at current levels. In addition to petroleum products, about 30% of global fertilizer moves through the Strait of Hormuz, jeopardizing the spring planting season.

TotalEnergies is a major player in the global LNG market, including the largest exporter of U.S. LNG. The CEO said the company can still fulfill customer orders in Europe and Asia thanks to its diversified global portfolio.

Last week, QatarEnergy said its Ras Laffan plant suffered “extensive damage” following Iranian drone attacks, effectively taking 20% of global LNG supply offline. The shutdown has sent natural gas prices in Europe and Asia surging.

Pouyanné expects prices could move substantially higher if the war drags on through the summer, since Asian demand rises over the summer just as Europe looks to refill storage. European natural gas traded around $18 per million British thermal units Tuesday, but Pouyanné said prices could hit $40/MMBtu over the summer if the conflict continues.

TotalEnergies is a major investor in U.S. energy. On Monday, it struck a deal with the Trump administration to abandon its offshore wind projects in return for $1 billion. The company agreed to reinvest the money into U.S. oil and gas projects instead.

The federal government is key for offshore wind permitting, and the current administration has been a vocal critic of the industry. Pouyanné said he did not want to litigate with the administration over its offshore wind leases – acquired under former President Joe Biden – and so approached the administration with a deal. He added that in the U.S. offshore wind no longer makes sense given cheaper alternatives.

“In the specific situation of the U.S., where you have a lot of land, you have a lot of gas, you have a lot of coal, you have a lot of land to build onshore solar, onshore wind, batteries, we don’t need to have offshore wind,” he said. “It’s a marginal technology, which is not affordable.”

“I prefer to allocate my capital to technologies which are more efficient, which give affordable electricity to customers,” he said.

As part of its expanding U.S. portfolio, TotalEnergies recently inked a 15-year agreement with Google to supply renewable power for data centers. Pouyanné said other hyperscalers – including Amazon and Microsoft – are now speaking to TotalEnergies directly.

“These hyperscalers have understood that an energy company – like TotalEnergies – because we have also capacity, not only to build, to invest, to have land, to trade, we were quite a good partner for them,” he said.

OpenAI is focusing employee and investor attention on its enterprise business as the artificial intelligence startup gears up to go public, potentially by the end of the year, CNBC has learned.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, held an all-hands meeting with staffers last week and said the company is committed to helping businesses, and is “orienting aggressively” towards high-productivity use cases.

OpenAI kickstarted the generative AI boom with the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, and the chatbot now supports more than 900 million weekly active users. But the company is still racing to grab market share, particularly in the enterprise, away from rivals like Google and Anthropic, which is also weighing an IPO.

“Our opportunity now is to take those 900 million users and turn them into high-compute users,” Simo said, according to a partial transcript of the meeting reviewed by CNBC. “We’ll do that by transforming ChatGPT into a productivity tool.”

The Wall Street Journal was first to report the all-hands meeting.

OpenAI’s IPO could land as soon as the fourth quarter of this year, according to a person familiar with the matter. The exact timing is still subject to change, said the person, who asked not to be named because the details are confidential.

CFO Sarah Friar is building out OpenAI’s finance team ahead of a market debut, hiring Ajmere Dale, the former chief accounting officer at Block, and Cynthia Gaylor, the former CFO of DocuSign, earlier this year. Gaylor will oversee investor relations as part of her role, according to a LinkedIn post.

In December, OpenAI declared a “code red” effort to improve ChatGPT in the face of increasingly stiff competition from Google and Anthropic. The company temporarily pulled back on other investments in areas like health, shopping and advertising.

Simo said during the March all-hands meeting that OpenAI is moving with the same amount of urgency that it did in December, but noted that the company can’t declare everything an emergency.

“What really matters for us right now is staying focused and executing extremely well,” Simo said.

OpenAI has also been working to outline clearer spending targets after rattling markets with ambitious infrastructure commitments in late 2025.

Instead of the $1.4 trillion figure that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had been touting, the company told investors in February that it’s targeting roughly $600 billion in total compute spend by 2030, CNBC previously reported.

OpenAI is projecting that its total revenue for 2030 will be more than $280 billion, with nearly equal contributions from its consumer and enterprise businesses. The $600 billion figure the company is offering is meant to more directly tie to its expected revenue growth.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told employees in an all-hands meeting on Tuesday that the company doesn’t “get to make operational decisions” regarding how its artificial intelligence technology is used by the Department of Defense.

“So maybe you think the Iran strike was good and the Venezuela invasion was bad,” Altman said Tuesday, according to a partial transcript of the meeting reviewed by CNBC. “You don’t get to weigh in on that.”

The meeting occurred four days after OpenAI announced its DOD arrangement, which landed just hours before the U.S. and Israel began carrying out strikes against Iran.

Altman told employees that the Pentagon respects OpenAI’s technical expertise, wants input about where its models are a good fit and will allow the company to build the safety stack it deems appropriate, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the meeting was private.

But Altman said the agency has also made it clear that operational decisions rest with Secretary Pete Hegseth. Altman has been vocally criticized, including by some OpenAI employees, since announcing the deal with the Pentagon shortly after rival Anthropic was blacklisted and labeled a “Supply-Chain Risk to National Security.” President Donald Trump also directed every federal agency in the U.S. to “immediately cease” all use of Anthropic’s technology.

Anthropic’s AI was reportedly used in the Iran strikes over the weekend as well as for the capturing of ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in January.

Altman has defended OpenAI’s contract in various social media posts, though he conceded that it looked “looked opportunistic and sloppy” and that the company “shouldn’t have rushed to get this out on Friday.” He said in a post on X that day that the Pentagon “displayed a deep respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible outcome.”

Anthropic was the first lab to deploy its models across the DOD’s classified network, and had been trying to negotiate the ongoing terms of its contract before talks collapsed. The company wanted assurance that its models would not be used for fully autonomous weapons or mass surveillance of Americans, while the DOD wanted Anthropic to agree to let the military deploy the models across all lawful use cases.

Last year, OpenAI was awarded a $200 million contract by the Pentagon, which allowed the agency to begin using the startup’s models in nonclassified use cases. The new arrangement will allow the company to deploy its models across the department’s classified networks.

Elon Musk’s xAI has also agreed to deploy its models across classified use cases.

“I believe we will hopefully have the best models that will encourage the government to be willing to work with us, even if our safety stack annoys them,” Altman said Tuesday. “But there will be at least one other actor, which I assume will be xAI, which effectively will say ‘We’ll do whatever you want.'”

Altman and Musk, two of the co-founders of OpenAI, are engaged in a heated legal battle that’s slated to go to trial next month.

XAI didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
