Shortly before the opening of Nasdaq trading on Friday, Elon Musk stepped in front of a cheerful crowd at SpaceX’s company town in Texas. His rocket maker was about to hit the public market at a valuation of around $2 trillion, instantly becoming the sixth most-valuable U.S. company.

Musk, weeks shy of his 55th birthday, told staffers that, in the early days of the company, he gave it “less than 10% chance of succeeding.”

“If people had told me this was going to happen, I was like, man, you must be smoking some really good crack,” said Musk, who founded SpaceX in 2002 and has grown it to 22,000 full-time employees. “Because I think this company is going to fail.”

Musk is now the world’s first trillionaire after his company pulled off the largest IPO on record, raising $75 billion, an amount roughly triple size of the next-biggest U.S. offering, which was Alibaba’s in 2014. There are 10 U.S. companies worth at least $1 trillion. Musk runs two of them.

Whatever uncertainty Musk professed to have felt when SpaceX was getting off the ground, he showed none of that in the days leading up to the IPO. In an abbreviated roadshow, SpaceX priced its IPO at $135 and told investors to take it or leave it. There was no price range used to gauge demand and no haggling with prospective shareholders.

That’s despite SpaceX having a fraction the revenue of any of tech’s megacaps and racking up a $4.9 billion loss last year, with total losses since its founding of over $41 billion. After the stock’s close on Friday, SpaceX was worth $2.1 trillion, giving it a multiple of 112 times last year’s revenue.

“This was not a deal that was priced based on market forces,” said Lloyd Greif, an investment banker with Greif & Co. in Los Angeles. “This was a deal based on what one man wanted. And when one man wants it, one man gets it, if that one man is Elon Musk.”

Meanwhile, all of those mentions of trillions and the trillionaire added fuel to the discourse surrounding wealth disparity as consumers deal with crippling inflation due largely to the war in Iran. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist, wrote on social media that Musk’s new status is a “call to action to take on the unprecedented income and wealth inequality that now exists.” And California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on X, which is owned by SpaceX, that, “Americans are struggling to pay for groceries and gas while Elon Musk becomes a TRILLIONAIRE.”

Beyond the money, there are the AI concerns. Safe AI Now, a group of tech and faith leaders, erected an inflatable effigy of a shirtless Musk in Times Square seeking to draw attention to the company’s poor AI safety track record.

None of that dampened the mood on Wall Street, which has been desperate to see new offerings after a historically slow period of IPOs dating back to late 2021. In closing the day up 19% and consistently holding well above the offer price, SpaceX’s IPO lifted confidence in potential deals later this year from artificial intelligence model giants OpenAI and Anthropic, which are each valued at close to $1 trillion on the private market.

Former Nasdaq CEO Robert Greifeld said he “would definitely bet” that OpenAI and Anthropic will go public in 2026. Both companies announced this month that they confidentially filed IPO paperwork.

Making Facebook’s IPO look small

More than 500 million SpaceX shares changed hands throughout the day on Friday, a number approaching Facebook’s market debut in 2012, when roughly 580 million shares were traded. Facebook’s IPO set a record at the time, raising $16 billion. At the end of its first day of trading, Facebook was worth about $100 billion, or one-twentieth SpaceX’s current market cap.

One big similarity between the two companies is that they’re founder controlled. But even there, SpaceX is on another level. At the time of Facebook’s IPO, CEO Mark Zuckerberg had the ability to control 56% of the voting power. For Musk at SpaceX, that number is above 82%.

Musk is certainly not alone in seeing a financial windfall from SpaceX’s IPO.

The offering pushed Alphabet’s stake past the $100 billion mark, after the company invested about $900 million in SpaceX in 2015. Valor Equity Partners, run by longtime Musk pal Antonio Gracias, is sitting on a stake worth over $80 billion, mostly owned by the firm’s clients.

In addition to the institutional investors, the IPO reportedly minted some 4,400 millionaires among the ranks of current and former SpaceX employees.

Underwriters gained access to additional shares, or their greenshoe overallotment, on one colorful condition.

“Only if the bankers all wore green shoes,” venture capitalist Steve Jurvetson, who invested in SpaceX in 2009, wrote in a post on X. Jurvetson included a photo of green and white Nike sneakers decorated with the company’s logo.

Throughout the morning, some of Musk’s top investors and good friends joined CNBC to talk about the historic event. Gracias was one of the guests.

The Valor founder and CEO said he met Musk more than 20 years ago through mutual friend David Sacks, a venture capitalist who until recently served as President Donald Trump’s AI and crypto czar. Gracias said he invested in PayPal “in the old days,” when Musk and Sacks were among the founding crew, and put early money into Tesla and SpaceX. In both cases, he said his firm worked “on hard problems to try and help these companies succeed.”

Gracias’ relationship with Musk extends beyond business. He spent some time last year working with Musk as part of the Trump Administration’s DOGE effort to slash the federal workforce, regulations and government spending. Gracias also previously sat on the boards of Tesla and other Musk companies. As for SpaceX, Gracias said he plans to hold onto the stock “as long as I possibly can.”

Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire, whose firm invested in SpaceX in 2019, called Musk a “generational entrepreneur,” likening his planned delivery of the Starship launch vehicle to the introduction of railroads. He said he was confident the company could be generating hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue in 2030.

Maguire said Sequoia will distribute some shares to investors “if we feel like the valuation is way ahead of its skis,” but said that, “as an individual, I’m going to hold my shares forever.”

‘Heavily dependent on Starship’

Skeptics of SpaceX’s lofty valuation questioned the logic of it all. The company counts on its Starlink satellite internet service for the bulk of its revenue and it’s the only profitable part of the business. But investors don’t pay historically high multiples for broadband service, no matter how good it is.

The space launch division is burning cash and is counting on the Starship rocket to scale to much better economics than the Falcon fleet. And the AI unit, which came in through the acquisition of Musk’s xAI, is currently a money pit that’s pivoted to leasing out massive amounts of capacity to the likes of Anthropic and Google.

Financial research firm CFRA gave SpaceX a sell rating and price target of $115, minutes after the company’s Nasdaq debut. Analysts said SpaceX has “elevated valuation expectations,” and living up to them would require proving the viability of Starship, expanding Starlink, generating returns from AI infrastructure, and eventually producing consistent free cash flows.

“Our primary concern is that SpaceX’s long-term strategy remains heavily dependent on Starship,” CFRA analyst Keith Snyder wrote in a note to clients, saying that the Starship rocket could be a “bottleneck” for various SpaceX initiatives.

Then there’s SpaceX’s stated $28.5 trillion total addressable market across space, connectivity and AI. That figure doesn’t include other literal moonshots like space tourism, asteroid mining or manufacturing in orbit. Nor does it include transportation to Mars.

Aswath Damodaran, a New York University finance professor, told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” on Friday that seeing the addressable market figure SpaceX provided made him think the prospectus was written by Grok, the xAI chatbot, rather than a banker.

“This is a hallucination,” Damodaran said. “I would be embarrassed to even put that number out.”

Maguire, a Musk permabull, said he stands by the projection.

“I would even argue it’s an underestimate,” he said.

While Musk is the face of SpaceX, getting to this point has a lot to do with the work of Gwynne Shotwell, the company’s operating chief and one of its first employees.

In an exclusive interview with CNBC ahead of the IPO, Shotwell responded to a question about whether her boss would ever combine SpaceX with Tesla. It’s a potential transaction that’s long been rumored about, even more since Musk merged SpaceX with xAI after previously doing the same with xAI and X.

Shotwell, whose stake in SpaceX is now worth over $2 billion, didn’t dismiss the possibility, but made clear that it’s not on her priority list.

“There’s no question that there are synergies between Tesla and SpaceX in our futures,” Shotwell told CNBC’s Morgan Brennan at Starbase. “There’s a convergence of what we’re all trying to accomplish in the future, but right now I’m focused on keeping the lights on here, keeping rockets in production, flying rockets, flying people, getting to the International Space Station, and critically providing broadband to folks that don’t have access.”

Musk, for his part, spent a fair amount of time on Friday appearing to relish the moment. As his company’s IPO was dominating the news cycle, Musk was active on social media, mostly reposting messages, videos and photos from supporters touting his company’s success. He didn’t write much, but he did have one message he wanted to share on X.

“I love the incredible people of SpaceX beyond words,” he wrote.

How do you build an $11 billion startup? For Winston Weinberg, CEO and co-founder of AI legal startup Harvey, it’s all about failure.

“I think it’s really hard to figure this out without failing. You just have to fail a million times,” Weinberg said on a recent episode of Fortune’s Term Sheet podcast.

The 30-year-old founder is a lawyer by training. But that all changed in 2022 when he left his job at a securities and antitrust law firm to start Harvey, a startup that builds AI tools for lawyers. Since then, he andGabriel Pereyra, a former Meta and Google DeepMind AI research scientist, have earned the backing of the OpenAI Startup Fund, Sequoia Capital, and Kleiner Perkins.

But that success didn’t come without plenty of failures along the way. And that, he said, is what changed his relationship to wins and losses.

“It’s not just you have to have a bunch of wins and then have a lot of failures. But you have to get good at taking some time to actually analyze: What did you do right? What did you do wrong?” Weinberg explained. “Most of that is destroying your ego 24/7.”

He doesn’t shy away from failing, he said, adding “it’s a very good way to learn.”

His comments echo a long-held mantra of successful founders, from Bill Gates to Mark Cuban: learn from your failures. Weinberg deals with failure by having high ambitions, and high standards. Wins and losses hold less weight when there is a long-term goal in mind, he explained. He takes this tack with his staff as well. He explained that it can be an adjustment working with him because he will call out 15 failures in a day, which can surprise some people because they’re striving for perfection.

“I do not care about perfection. I care about rate of improvement,” Weinberg said. “That’s all that matters because otherwise, what you’re going to end up doing is you’re going to hire a bunch of people that are really good for six months, and then if they aren’t improving, then it’s irrelevant, because your business has changed massively.”

Weinberg said that Harvey’s staff, including himself, have to “re-earn” their positions every six months to survive in an industry where if a company isn’t innovating fast enough, it will lose, he explained. More than the technology, Harvey’s decisive culture is what matters to him most, he said.

“I think you have to basically build a company that has a culture of making decisions very quickly and being okay to make mistakes.”

When the U.K. announced its AI Opportunities Action Plan — a grand blueprint to deploy the tech across society — in January, Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared the strategy would make the country an “AI superpower.”

One of the key pillars of this plan was a rapid buildout of data centres capable of providing the huge compute requirements for the rollout of AI. This would be driven by “AI growth zones” — designated areas with relaxed planning permission and improved access to power.

Nearly one year on, and Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google have all committed billions of dollars to AI infrastructure in the country. Four AI growth zones have been unveiled, and homegrown startups like Nscale have emerged as key players in the space.

But critics point to heavily restricted access to energy via the national grid and slow-moving buildouts as signs the country is at risk of lagging further behind global rivals in the AI race.

“Ambition and delivery are not yet aligned,” Ben Pritchard, CEO of data center power supplier AVK, told CNBC.

“Growth has been held back largely by constraints around power availability. Grid bottlenecks, in particular, have slowed the pace of development and mean the U.K. is not yet deploying infrastructure quickly enough to keep pace with global competitors.”

Grid connection delays

It is still early days in the U.K.’s AI infrastructure buildout as AI growth zones are currently in their initial phases of development.

A site in Oxfordshire, the first to be announced in February, has yet to begin building work and is still considering delivery partner proposals. Ground preparation work has begun at one in the North East of England, announced in September, with formal building beginning early 2026.

Two more sites, in North and South Wales were unveiled in November. The former is searching for an investment partner, which the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSIT) told CNBC it expects to be confirmed in the coming months. The latter is made up of a cluster of sites, some of which are already operational with additional construction work to be done on others, DSIT said.

The U.K. government said in July it was targeting a core group of AI growth zones serving at least 500 megawatts of demand by 2030, with at least one scaling to more than one gigawatt by that time.

But the most serious challenge to realising those ambitions is the U.K.’s limited grid capacity, said Pritchard.

“Developers expect grid connection delays of eight to ten years, and the volume of outstanding connection requests, especially around London, is unprecedented,” he told CNBC.

AI workloads are also “dramatically increasing energy demand” as businesses and consumers begin to use the tech, putting additional pressure on a stretched energy system, Pritchard added. “They are no longer isolated risks; they are actively slowing down or blocking developments across the country.”

The open call for applications for the AI growth zone initiative created a situation where landowners with pylons or powercables running across their land applied for the designation, said Kao Data’s Spencer Lamb.

“This resulted in the national grid being inundated with power grid applications from speculative sources,” with no realistic chance of success, he told CNBC.

Laying the groundwork

The National Energy System Operator (Neso) — The U.K.’s public body responsible for managing the national grid — has made moves to fix the situation.

Earlier this month it announced plans to prioritise hundreds of projects for faster access to the grid. Neso declined to comment on whether AI infrastructure projects were among those prioritised when asked by CNBC, but did say a significant portion were data centers.

There have also been big money commitments from tech giants, many of which were paraded by the U.K. government in September.

Microsoft, Nvidia, Google, OpenAI, CoreWeave and others announced billions of dollars of AI investment during U.S. President Donald Trump’s state visit, which involved plans to deploy the latest chips in the country and open new data centers.

Homegrown startup Nscale, which provides access to AI compute and is building data centers, also announced deals to deploy tens of thousands of Nvidia chips at an AI factory just outside London by early 2027.

“Investment from major private players has laid important groundwork,” Puneet Gupta, general manager for the U.K. and Ireland at data infrastructure company NetApp, told CNBC. “Momentum is also building around national research supercomputers and plans for new compute capacity, with commitments to build AI ‘gigafactories’ in the UK.”

But the “real test” will be how quickly those plans translate into usable compute for U.K. organisations, said Gupta.

Avoiding an AI infrastructure ‘sugar rush’

The long-term success of the country’s AI infrastructure buildout will require it to invest in the “full stack,” including data pipelines, storage, energy sourcing, security, talent and skills, Stuart Abbott, U.K. and Ireland’s managing director at AI infrastructure company VAST Data, told CNBC.

That means “developing an operational fabric that lets real institutions deploy AI safely at scale,” he added. “If the UK wants this to be durable rather than a one-year sugar rush, it has to treat AI infrastructure like economic infrastructure.”

The challenges are significant. The value of data center deals in Europe pales in comparison to sums funneled into projects in the U.S. The U.K. also currently has the costliest energy in Europe, which is around 75% higher than before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and legacy grid infrastructure which can take many years to connect to new sites.

One potential solution for projects that are unable to secure access to the national grid are microgrids, AVK’s Pritchard said. Microgrids are self-contained power networks from sources like engines, renewables and batteries.

AVK is currently designing two microgrids for partners building cloud compute, though not for AI, in the U.K. They can take around three years to build and cost around 10% more than energy from the grid at the moment, according to Pritchard.

Co-locating compute where power already exists, rather than “forcing everything to be greenfield” — the term for undeveloped sites — is also a way to get AI infrastructure up and running faster, VAST Data’s Abbot said.

The pace of implementation will be critical, Kao Data’s Lamb told CNBC. “Unless fundamental issues around energy availability and pricing, AI copyright and funding for AI developments are solved quickly, the U.K. will miss out on one of the most remarkable economic opportunities of our time and ultimately risks becoming an international AI backwater.”

OMAHA, Neb. – In his annual letter to shareholders Saturday, Warren Buffett celebrated the successes of Berkshire Hathaway’s companies last year and in the 60 years since he took over a struggling New England textile company and began converting it into a massive conglomerate.

Buffett opened the letter by acknowledging that he has occasionally made mistakes over the years without offering many specific examples, but he assured shareholders that the man he has chosen to one day succeed him as CEO, Greg Abel, isn’t one of them. He wrote that Abel will be ready to act whenever he spots significant investment opportunities.

“We are impartial in our choice of equity vehicles, investing in either variety based upon where we can best deploy your (and my family’s) savings. Often, nothing looks compelling; very infrequently we find ourselves knee-deep in opportunities. Greg has vividly shown his ability to act at such times,” Buffett wrote.

And Abel will have plenty of resources to work with given that Berkshire now holds $334.201 billion cash after selling off much of its Apple and Bank of America stock in the past year and continuing to generate money from all its subsidiaries that include Geico insurance, BNSF railroad, a collection of major utilities and an assortment of major manufacturers and well-known retail businesses that include brands like Dairy Queen and See’s Candy. That’s almost double the $167.6 billion cash Berkshire held a year ago.

Buffett did find a few things to use some of that cash on last year by spending $3.9 billion to acquire the rest of its utility business from the estate of a former partner and another $2.6 billion to buy the rest of the Pilot truck stop chain. Buffett said he also increased Berkshire’s investment in five major Japanese conglomerates. Berkshire has now spent $13.8 billion over the past six years on those Japanese investments that are now worth $23.5 billion.

But while Buffett has struggled to find major acquisitions in recent years he affirmed that he has no plans to offer a dividend. In what might be a nod to the 94-year-old Buffett’s age, the legendary investor announced that this year’s shareholder meeting in May that routinely attracts tens of thousands of people will be shorter. Buffett and Berkshire’s two vice chairmen will only answer questions from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. – several hours less than usual. Buffett also acknowledged using a cane these days to avoid “falling flat on my face.”

“I wanted to be involved in something that is pushing the women’s game forward,” Johnson told CNBC.

Unrivaled, which kicks off its inaugural season in January, looks to offer female athletes another option to play basketball in the U.S. during the WNBA offseason. In addition to giving players equity in the league, Unrivaled aims to offer the highest average salary in women’s pro sports league history. In October, the Unrivaled signed a broadcast deal with TNT Sports.

“When I heard about the money, that was big for me. … These women are getting paid what they deserve,” Johnson said.

NCAA rules prevent Johnson, a junior at Louisiana State University, from committing to play in the league until she turns professional. Unrivaled signed a similar deal with University of Connecticut star Paige Bueckers in August.

In addition to being a league owner, Johnson will collaborate with Unrivaled on content throughout the season, and the league plans to support her music.

While the top rookie salary in the WNBA is $76,535, Johnson said she hasn’t decided yet when she’s going to enter the WNBA draft but she isn’t worried about her brand diminishing.

“NIL is big but it’s really just a gateway to the pros,” she said. “The opportunities that I get from college are still going to roll over and it’s not like my followers are going to disappear.”

When asked who she looks up to as a role model, Johnson says she looks to the King: LeBron James.

“He’s the ultimate businessman,” she said.

“The way that he leverages his business opportunities, the way he carries himself, and he’s done so many things [like building a school] to help other people,” she added.

With so many different balls in the air, Johnson said it takes discipline, consistency and time management to fit everything in.

“I don’t like sitting in the house watching Netflix. … I like getting stuff done,” she said.

A small Asian country sitting in the Himalayas is now among the largest holders of Bitcoin in the world.

Bhutan might be occupying a small land area but it achieved a huge milestone in its cryptocurrency investments hitting $1 billion worth of Bitcoin.

Strategic Move

The landlocked Himalayan country has been increasing its presence in the crypto space by building its Bitcoin reserves. This move which analysts see as a strategic investment approach now bore positive results.

Arkham Intelligence reported that Bhutan became a major player in the cryptocurrency industry, owning $1 billion worth of BTC, an outstanding feat for such a small country.

The Royal Government of Bhutan now owns $1 Billion in Bitcoin. pic.twitter.com/y8MQdCqMDy

— Arkham (@ArkhamIntel) November 11, 2024

Analysts said that this key milestone highlighted the calculated steps taken by Bhutan’s government to diversify its economy to mitigate the impact of the COVID pandemic on its tourism sector.

According to Arkham Intelligence, Druk Holdings, the firm managing the BTC investments of Bhutan, holds 12,568 Bitcoins, firmly placing the Himalayan country as one of the premier BTC investors in the world.

Tapping Hydropower Resources For Bitcoin

Bhutan utilizes its abundant hydropower to fund its BTC investments as the country now ranked fourth among nations with crypto holdings, joining countries like El Salvador, a South American nation that declared BTC as its national currency.

Analysts said that the Royal Government of Bhutan leveraged its natural resources to steadily increase its cryptocurrency reserves, allowing it to reach this milestone. They said that the country implemented a consistent Bitcoin mining strategy by tapping its rich natural resources to keep its operational costs low.

Its rich hydropower resources help the Himalayan country sustain its crypto mining which is a major contributor to the country’s economy.

A scenic view of Bhutan. Image: Responsible Adventures

According to data, more than 25% of the country’s GDP comes from mining Bitcoin. It shows that Bhutan’s government is committed to turning cryptocurrency into an economic asset.

The country has already mined 13,011 BTC, making it a government with the biggest holding of BTC.

A Global Trend

Analysts said that the achievement of Bhutan shows a worldwide trend of many nations seeing the value of crypto as an asset. Bhutan and El Salvador are among the countries embracing cryptocurrency as a financial tool.

The firstborn cryptocurrency is gaining appeal as more countries are starting to explore the potential of BTC as part of their national reserve. One country, El Salvador, announced in 2021 that it will adopt Bitcoin as a legal tender.

Bhutan is another excellent example of a crypto adopter, but analysts said other countries can learn from Bhutan’s alternative model of hydropower-powered mining strategy.

LONDON — Increasingly many financial services firms are touting the benefits of artificial intelligence when it comes to boosting productivity and overall operational efficiency.

Despite bold statements, a lot of companies are failing to produce tangible results, according to Edward J Achtner, the head of generative AI for U.K. banking giant HSBC.

“Candidly, there’s a lot of success theater out there,” Achtner said on a panel at the CogX Global Leadership Summit alongside Ranil Boteju — a fellow AI leader at rival British bank Lloyds Banking Group — and Nathalie Oestmann, head of NV Ltd, an advisory firm for venture capital funds.

“We have to be very clinical in terms of what we choose to do, and where we choose to do it,” Achtner told attendees of the event, held at the Royal Albert Hall in London earlier this week.

Achtner outlined how the 150-year-old lending institution has embraced artificial intelligence since ChatGPT — the popular AI chatbot from Microsoft-backed startup OpenAI — burst onto the scene in November 2022.

The HSBC AI leader said that the bank has more than 550 use cases across its business lines and functions linked to AI — ranging from fighting money laundering and fraud using machine learning tools to supporting knowledge workers with newer generative AI systems.

One example he gave was a partnership that HSBC has in place with internet search titan Google on the use of AI technology anti-money laundering and fraud mitigation. That tie-up has been in place for several years, he said. The bank has also dipped its toes deeper into genAI tech much more recently.

“When it comes to generative artificial intelligence, we do need to clearly separate that” from other types of AI, Achtner said. “We do approach the underlying risk with respect to generative very differently because, while it represents incredible potential opportunity and productivity gains, it also represents a different type of risk.”

Achtner’s comments come as other figures in the financial services sector — particularly leaders at startup firms — have made bold statements about the level of overall efficiency gains and cost reductions they are seeing as a result of investments in AI.

Buy now, pay later firm Klarna says it has been taking advantage of AI to make up for loss of productivity resulting from declines in its workforce as employees move on from the company.

It is implementing a company-wide hiring freeze and has slashed overall employee headcount down to 3,800 from 5,000 — a roughly 24% workforce reduction — with the help of AI, CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski said in August. He is looking to further reduce Klarna’s headcount to 2,000 staff members — without specifying a time for this target.

Klarna’s boss said the firm was lowering its overall headcount against the backdrop of AI’s potential to have “a dramatic impact” on jobs and society.

“I think politicians already today should consider whether there are other alternatives of how they could support people that may be effective,” he said at the time in an interview with the BBC. Siemiatkowski said it was “too simplistic” to say AI’s disruptive effects would be offset by the creation of new jobs thanks to AI.

Oestmann of NV Ltd, a London-based firm that offers advisory services for the C-suite of venture capital and private equity firms, directly touched on Klarna’s actions, saying headlines around such AI-driven workforce reductions are “not helpful.”

Klarna, she suggested, likely saw that AI “makes them a more valuable company” and was consequently incorporating the technology as part of plans to reduce its workforce anyway.

The result Klarna is seeing from AI “are very real,” a Klarna spokesperson told CNBC. “We publicize these results because we want to be honest and transparent about the impact genAI is having in the real world in companies today,” the spokesperson added.

“At the end of the day,” Oestmann added, as long as people are “trained appropriately” and banks and other financial services firm can “reinvent” themselves in the new AI era, “it will just help us to evolve.” She advised financial firms to pursue “continuous learning in everything that you do.”

“Make sure you are trying these tools out, make sure you are making this part of your everyday, make sure you are curious,” she added.

Boteju, chief data and analytics officer at Lloyds, pointed to three main use cases that the lender sees with respect to AI: automating back office functions like coding and engineering documentation, “human-in-the loop” uses like prompts for sales staff, and AI-generated responses to client queries.

Boteju stressed that Lloyds is “proceeding with caution” when it comes to exposing the bank’s customers to generative AI tools. “We want to get our guardrails in place before we actually start to scale those,” he added.

“Banks in particular have been using AI and machine learning for probably about 15 or 20 years,” Boteju said, signaling that machine learning, intelligent automation and chatbots are things traditional lenders have been “doing for a while.”

Generative AI, on the other hand, is a more nascent technology, according to the Lloyds exec. The bank is increasingly thinking about how to scale that technology — but by “using the current frameworks and infrastructure we’ve got,” rather than by moving the needle significantly.

Boteju and Achtner’s comments tally with what other AI leaders of financial services have said previously. Speaking with CNBC last week, Bahadir Yilmaz, chief analytics officer of ING, said that AI is unlikely to be as disruptive as firms like Klarna are suggesting with their public messaging.

“We see the same potential that they’re seeing,” Yilmaz said in an interview in London. “It’s just the tone of communication is a bit different.” He added that ING is primarily using AI in its global contact centers and internally for software engineering.

“We don’t need to be seen as an AI-driven bank,” Yilmaz said, adding that, with many processes lenders won’t even need AI to solve certain problems. “It’s a really powerful tool. It’s very disruptive. But we don’t necessarily have to say we are putting it as a sauce on all the food.”

Johan Tjarnberg, CEO of Swedish online payments firm Trustly, told CNBC earlier this week that AI “will actually be one of the biggest technology levers in payments.” But even so, he noted that the firm is focusing more of the “basics of AI” than on transformative changes like AI-led customer service.

One area where Trustly is looking to improve customer experience with AI is subscriptions. The startup is working on an “intelligent charging mechanism” that would aim to figure out the best time for a bank to take payment from a subscription platform user, based on their historical financial activity.

Tjarnberg added that Trustly is seeing closer to 5-10% improved efficiency as a result of implementing AI within its organization.

After a successful 2024 Olympics and Paralympics in Paris, the bar has been set high for the next summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028, something that key stakeholders in that event say the city will be ready for.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass told CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin at CNBC x Boardroom’s Game Plan sports business event on Tuesday that what is making her anxious is “all that we need to do in our city to prepare” for the 2028 Games. However, she said that much like the last time Los Angeles hosted the Olympics in 1984, she believes the city will not only improve to host the Games but will benefit once they are over.

That includes work on public transportation. Bass said she is hoping there will be “no cars to the venues,” and that viewers will take public transportation to the Games — a pledge that will require an investment in both bus and subway infrastructure, as well as collaboration with other cities to borrow buses.

Bass said the city is also doing “whatever we can to eliminate street homelessness,” including building more than 18,000 new units for the unhoused population.

Bass said there will also be discussions with companies in Los Angeles around work schedules to shift employees to remote work during periods of high traffic, as well as find ways to shift truck deliveries into the night, like what happened during the 1984 Games.

“I think there is a way we can organize the region so that traffic will be less and manageable,” Bass said.

LA 2028 President Casey Wasserman attended the Paris Games, an event that he told Ross Sorkin “reminded people why they fall in love with the Olympics,” and one he said organizers will look to build upon in Los Angeles.

While no new permanent venues will be built for the Los Angeles Games, the first time in Olympics history, there are some challenges in utilizing all the city’s landmarks in the way Paris was able to feature famous locations like the Eiffel Tower by hosting beach volleyball nearby. Wasserman said Los Angeles got a glimpse of that with the Olympic Torch handover ceremony, when Tom Cruise scaled the Hollywood Sign and the Olympic Rings replaced the “OO”‘s in the sign — which Wasserman noted was done with CGI.

“That’s obviously a longer, complicated conversation,” Wasserman said of altering the Hollywood Sign for the Games. “But I think it’s a pretty spectacular opportunity if there was a way to do it.”

Actress Jessica Alba, who is on the Los Angeles 2028 board of directors, said the Games will present all different aspects of the city’s culture, from Hollywood to fashion to food, as “a global platform to showcase what they got.”

“LA is a main character,” Alba said. “We want it to be a main character during the Olympics.”

Disclosure: CNBC parent NBCUniversal owns NBC Sports and NBC Olympics. NBC Olympics is the U.S. broadcast rights holder to all Summer and Winter Games through 2032.
