The S & P 500 rose 0.13% for the week — extending its run of weekly gains to seven in a row. It was the longest such winning streak since December 2023. Record highs on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday were enough to offset Friday’s awful 1.24% decline. Stocks limped into the weekend after the high-stakes Beijing summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping produced few tangible wins for the United States. Soaring oil prices and rising bond yields also pressured the market. It was not all bad news, as strength in tech stocks supported last week’s record-high sessions. Information technology was one of four S & P 500 sectors higher for the week. It’s unclear whether the market can continue its weekly gains next time around. Until then, here were three driving forces on Wall Street over the past five sessions. Trump-Xi summit At the conclusion of last week’s meetings between Trump and Xi, Wall Street was left with more questions than answers. Boeing was our worst performer of the week, down 7%. Trump on Friday provided new details on what he described as a commitment from China to buy Boeing jets. He told reporters aboard Air Force One that China agreed to order “approximately 400, 450 engines, 200 planes, and a promise of up to 750 if they do a good job.” The president revealed the 200 number in a Fox News interview Thursday. Wall Street estimates were looking for more like 500 aircraft. Neither China nor Boeing has made any announcements. While not thrilled with the developments, we still see a turnaround taking place under Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg, who was among the many CEOs on the China trip with the president. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was also there. The summit did not lead to a deal on semiconductors, which took down Nvidia and other chip stocks on Friday. Trump said AI guardrails and Nvidia’s H200 chips approved for China sales were discussed. He said he “thinks something could happen,” but noted that China “wants to try and develop their own.” Nvidia shares were able to gain 4.7% for the week. One bright spot, Xi told American CEOs traveling with Trump the door to business in China will “open wider,” state-backed newspaper Xinhua reported. Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook were also part of the delegation. Club name Apple gained more than 2% for the week. The U.S.-Iran war was discussed at the Trump-Xi summit. But like many of the other issues, nothing concrete transpired. Trump discussed the Iran war and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz with Xi, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told NBC News . Rubio added that Trump did not ask Xi for help in ending the monthslong war. (Trump said he ripped up the latest peace proposal from Iran.) On Taiwan, Xi told Trump that if the issue is not handled “properly,” it could put the “entire relationship [with the U.S.] in great jeopardy,” Chinese state news outlet Xinhua reported . Trump said he told Xi, “I don’t talk about” whether the U.S. would defend Taiwan from China. What’s next for rates? New Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh has been dealt a tough hand, with prices seemingly going up at every turn. Crude jumped last week on persistent Iran war uncertainty. Bond yields rose on worries about whether Warsh will be able to fulfill Trump’s desire for lower interest rates. A pair of hot inflation reports cast further doubt on immediate Fed cuts. On Tuesday, the April consumer price index came in above expectations , driven largely by war-related energy increases. On Wednesday, investors got an even hotter wholesale inflation report . The producer price index last month experienced its biggest annual jump since 2022. The economic releases came as Warsh won Senate confirmation to be the next Fed chair. Jerome Powell ‘s term as Fed chair expired on Friday, but he plans to stay at the central bank . Powell has two years left in his term as governor. The new data complicates Warsh’s mission to lower rates. If the central bank cuts too fast, it could reignite inflation. Jim Cramer said things can get bumpier from here with stocks near all-time highs and monetary policy still stringent. “This stock market won’t be able to rally for long without the oxygen of lower interest rates,” Jim said Tuesday night . AI trade With all the bumps in the road last week, the AI trade was not one of them. Investors found out once again that investor appetite for AI stocks remains strong, with the blockbuster debut of Cerebras. Cerebras, an AI hardware company that claims its flagship product runs faster than Nvidia’s GPUs, went public on Thursday. It was the largest IPO by a U.S. tech firm in years as Cerebras sold 30 million shares and raised $5.5 billion in total. The chip name had a fantastic first session, jumping 68% by Thursday’s closing bell. Shares tumbled 10% on Friday, but a lot of tech stocks were falling at the same time. We wouldn’t chalk it up to something systemic. We don’t see Cerebras as a threat to Nvidia. Sure, they are competitors, but Cerebras is mostly focused on the ultra-fast processing of daily AI workloads referred to as inference. The IPO wasn’t the only positive sign of strength in the AI trade. Cisco Systems, a former Club stock, had a blowout earnings report on Wednesday evening. Investors cheered the networking company’s surging AI orders. Management hiked its expected AI infrastructure and hyperscaler orders for the 2026 fiscal year to $9 billion, up from $5 billion. We saw this as a positive for Club holding Broadcom , which also has a robust networking business that should benefit from this wave of AI spending. Broadcom shares jumped Thursday to a record high close on the Cisco earnings release. But Broadcom declined modestly for the week after seeing pressure on Friday.
Strategy’s Bitcoin stash sits at roughly $64.44 billion — and it didn’t grow this week.

A Pause After 4 Straight Weeks

Michael Saylor, executive chairman of Strategy, confirmed Sunday that the company made no Bitcoin purchases during the current week, snapping a four-week buying run.

The announcement came through his usual channel: the “Orange Dots” chart posted to X, which tracks every purchase the company has ever made.

Followers have come to read the chart as a signal of fresh buying. This time, the message underneath told a different story — “No buys this week.”

He did not leave it there. Saylor added that the firm would resume purchases the following week, writing simply, “Back to work next week.”

No buys this week. Back to work next week. $BTC pic.twitter.com/lqliYZPAf4

— Michael Saylor (@saylor) May 3, 2026

Scale Of Recent Purchases Had Already Been Shrinking

The pause follows a noticeable slowdown in the size of Strategy’s acquisitions. According to reports, the firm picked up 3,273 BTC last Monday at an average price of $77,906 per coin, totaling roughly $255 million.

That figure sounds large on its own, but it represents a near 90% drop from the $2.54 billion purchase made on April 20.

Strategy’s total Bitcoin holdings now stand at 818,334 BTC, acquired at an average cost of $75,537 per coin.

BTCUSD trading at $79,858 on the 24-hour chart: TradingView

BTC Price Holds Steady Despite The News

Bitcoin did not react sharply to the announcement. As of Sunday, BTC traded at around $78,590, up about 0.28% on the day. The $78,000 level has held as a floor, with analysts pointing to $75,000 as the next meaningful support below it.

Some analysts noted that the next resistance above current prices sits near $79,000. A break past that level, based on his read, could push Bitcoin into the $86,000 to $88,000 range. Higher up, the $92,000 to $94,000 zone would be the next ceiling to watch.

For now, the market appears to be taking Saylor’s week off in stride. Strategy’s buying activity has grown into one of the more closely watched signals in the Bitcoin market, and the company’s sheer scale of holdings means even a one-week absence draws attention.

Whether next week brings a return to large-scale accumulation — or another modest dip — remains to be seen.

Bitcoin price struggles over the last week were also in its ETF market, as the Bitcoin spot ETFs posted their first net outflows in a month. Before this trading session, these investment funds had experienced a 4-week bullish streak, resulting in a combined net inflow of $2.21 billion.

Bitcoin ETFs See Red Again, While Potential New Member Awaits

According to data from SoSoValue, the combined trading activity across the 12 Bitcoin Spot ETFs resulted in a negative inflow of $296.18 million over the past week. This development represents the seventh weekly outflow of 2026, and the fifteenth since the crypto bear market commenced in October 2025. A daily analysis shows the net withdrawal performance is highly linked to consecutive outflows on Thursday and Friday, combinedly valued at over $396 million. For context, the $225.48 million outflow registered on Friday represents the market’s largest net outflow since March 3rd.

Looking at individual fund performance, BlackRock IBIT experienced the largest net redemptions valued at $158.07 million. Meanwhile, Grayscale’s GBTC, Bitwise’s BITB, and Ark/21 Shares ARKB also registered a total netflow of $169.26 million. ETFs such as Grayscale’s BTC and VanEck’s HODL also posted respective net withdrawals of $5.45 and $10.28, marking minor contributions to the general market’s negative performance. On the other hand, Fidelity’s FBTC accounted for the only recorded net inflow, valued at $46.88 million.

Other ETFs, such as Invesco’s BTCO, Valkyrie’s BRRR, Wisdom Tree’s BTCW, Franklin Templeton’s EZBC, and Hashdex’s DEFI, all experienced zero weekly net flows. At press time, the Bitcoin Spot ETF reported a cumulative total net inflow of $55.93 billion and total net assets of $84.77 billion.

Meanwhile, recent reports indicate that American banking giant Morgan Stanley has filed to launch its own Bitcoin spot ETF under the ticker MSBT. According to Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas, the proposed fund will offer the lowest fee in the market at 0.14%, just below Grayscale’s 0.15%. If approved by the SEC, MSBT will be the first Bitcoin spot ETF directly listed by a US bank. For context, Morgan Stanley ranks as a leading financial services operator in the world with an asset under management of $1.9 trillion and a market cap of $251 billion.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs (exchange-traded funds) in the United States have posted five consecutive days of capital inflows for the first time in 2026. This good run of form comes as a relief after what has been a turbulent start to the year for BTC and the broader cryptocurrency market.

While the premier cryptocurrency still appears to be struggling in terms of price action, the demand conditions — especially in the US — seem to be improving steadily. According to the latest market data, the Bitcoin ETFs registered approximately $767.32 million in net inflows over the past week.

US Bitcoin ETFs Record $767M In The Past Week

On Friday, March 13, the US-based Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded $180.33 million in total net inflows. This latest round of capital influx marked the fifth day in an inflow streak that started earlier in the week and the longest so far this year.

Recent market data shows that BlackRock’s Bitcoin Trust (with the ticker IBIT) contributed the majority (roughly $143.59 million) of the total net inflow on Friday. This was followed by the $23.24 million contribution of Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) on the day.

VanEck Bitcoin ETF (HODL), Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB), and Ark 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) (adding $8.05 million, $3.09 million, and $2.36 million in value, respectively) were the only other Bitcoin ETFs that recorded any activity on Friday. Interestingly, this Friday’s performance only pales in comparison to the $250.92 in the total net inflows seen on Tuesday, March 10.

As mentioned earlier, these daily performances brought the exchange-traded funds’ weekly record to a net total of around $767.32 million. This week’s performance marks the third consecutive week of positive inflows for the US-based Bitcoin ETFs.

According to SoSoValue data, the BTC-linked investment products posted more than $568 million in total net inflows in the previous week. Meanwhile, the exchange-traded funds added more than $787 million in value in the final week of February.

Bitcoin Price Overview

While the spot Bitcoin ETFs have been seeing increased demand in recent weeks, there has not been concomitant growth in the premier cryptocurrency’s value within the same period. More specifically, the price of BTC has faced rejection twice around the $74,000 resistance level over the last two weeks.

As of this writing, the price of BTC stands at around $70,748, reflecting no significant movement in the past 24 hours. According to data from CoinGecko, the flagship cryptocurrency has jumped by nearly 5% in the past seven days.

Indian markets snapped their losing streak on Monday, supported by gains in financials and energy stocks, with additional strength from the pharma and healthcare sectors. The Nifty ended a two-session slide to close at 25,682.75, rising 211.65 points or 0.83%, while the 30-share BSE Sensex rebounded after three consecutive declines to finish at 83,277.15, up 650.39 points or 0.79%.

Top Gainers & Losers

The Nifty breadth remained positive with 35 stocks ending in the green while the remaining 15 were in the red. The top five gainers were Power Grid Corporation, Coal India, HDFC Bank, Adani Enterprises and Max Healthcare Institute, while the five biggest losers were Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Finance, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Eicher Motors.

Barring media, chemicals and auto sectors, most other indices witnessed buying action with Nifty PSU Bank (1.5%) emerging as the top performer. Energy (Nifty Oil & Gas, 0.9%) was another big contributor in terms of its weight in Nifty. FMCG, pharma and realty gained up to 1.6%.

Expert View

Commenting on the day’s action, Nilesh Jain, Vice President – Head of Technical and Derivative Research at Centrum Finverse, said that Nifty has formed a bullish engulfing candlestick pattern, indicating a potential reversal. The index rebounded sharply after testing the 25,400 zone and successfully held above its 21-DMA at 25,480 on a closing basis, he said. “However, it closed marginally below the 100-DMA at 25,690, which now acts as an immediate resistance. The broader structure remains positive, and a follow-up move towards 25,800 cannot be ruled out, while the immediate support has shifted higher to 25,500 levels,” Jain added.

Global Markets

Asian markets traded mixed today, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 index closing with a decline of 0.24%. China’s Shanghai Composite ended with sharp cuts of 1.3%. Among the gainers were Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Singapore’s FTSE Straits Times Index.

Meanwhile action in the European markets was buoyant with UK’s FTSE 100 trading 0.17% higher around 10:12 a.m. GMT (3:57 pm India time) while the Stoxx 600, French CAC 40, Germany’s DAX and Spain’s IBEX were higher by up to 1% around this time.

Currency Watch

The Indian rupee ended barely changed on Monday, as usual dollar demand met offsetting inflows, keeping the currency largely rangebound at the start of the week. The rupee moved in a narrow 10-paise band to end ‌at 90.65 against its previous close of 90.6350.

The rupee had jumped earlier this month, backed by the optimism from the U.S.-India trade deal, but is back to tracking flow dynamics and external cues.

Dollar sales by exporters and foreign portfolio inflows have helped the currency rise 1.5% so far in February.

“The rupee is not racing. It is waiting,” Reuters reported, quoting Amit Pabari, managing director at FX advisory firm CR Forex.

From a technical perspective, the 90.00–90.20 zone remains a key support for USD/INR, and a gradual move towards 91.00–91.20 remains possible in the near term, he said.

Although foreign investors remain net buyers of Indian equities for the month so far, they pulled out more than $800 million on Friday, ‌underscoring that flows remain choppy.

Crude Impact

Crude traded lower on Monday. The US WTI oil contracts were trading at $62.670, down by $0.22 or 0.35%, while Brent oil futures were hovering near $67.54, lower by $0.21 or 0.31%.

Here are five key things investors need to know to start the trading day:

Here’s what to know:

2. Berkshire, sans Buffett

In his six decades building a flailing textile mill into a $1 trillion behemoth, Buffett’s Berkshire has delivered a whopping cumulative return of more than 5.5 million percent to shareholders.

In an interview with CNBC’s Becky Quick, parts of which aired this morning, Buffett said Berkshire “has a better chance I think of being here 100 years from now than any company I can think of.” Buffett, who is being succeeded by Greg Abel, will stay on as chair of the conglomerate.

But his departure as CEO leaves the question of who will run Berkshire’s $300 billion equity portfolio. As CNBC’s Yun Li notes, some investors aren’t sold on Abel making investing decisions given his lack of a public track record as a stock picker.

As CNBC’s Spencer Kimball explains, bipartisan concern about the data center boom could slow development — especially as politicians gear up for the 2026 midterm elections.

After withdrawing money on a net basis for the past three months, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have turned buyers with a Rs 6,480 crore investment in October so far, driven by strong macroeconomic factors.

The development comes after persistent outflows in recent times, with FPIs pulling out Rs 23,885 crore in September, Rs 34,990 crore in August, and Rs 17,700 crore in July, data from depositories showed.

The renewed inflow in October marks a significant shift in sentiment and reflects fresh confidence among global investors towards Indian markets.

Several key drivers underpin this reversal.

According to Himanshu Srivastava, Principal, Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India, India’s macro backdrop remains relatively strong among emerging markets, with stable growth, manageable inflation, and resilient domestic demand helping the country stand out.

Live Events

He further noted that global liquidity conditions are gradually easing, with expectations of rate cuts or at least a pause in the US. As risk appetite returns, funds are flowing back into higher-return emerging markets.Additionally, Indian valuations, which had been under pressure, have now turned more attractive, prompting renewed “dip-buying” interest.Echoing a similar view, Geojit Investments Chief Investment Strategist VK Vijayakumar said the principal reason for this shift in FPIs’ strategy is the reduced valuation differential between India and other markets.

India’s under-performance over the past year, he said, has opened up prospects for improved relative performance.

Vaqarjaved Khan, Senior Fundamental Analyst, Angel One, pointed out that the latest inflows can also be attributed to a moderation in trade tensions between the US and India.

He noted that the selling pressure seen earlier in 2025 made Indian equities’ valuation multiples more attractive compared to global peers.

Looking ahead, experts believe that future trade developments and the ongoing earnings season will play a key role in determining the direction of FPI flows in the coming weeks.

Despite the recent inflow, FPIs have still withdrawn around Rs 1.5 lakh crore so far in 2025.

Meanwhile, in the debt market, FPIs invested about Rs 5,332 crore under the general limit and Rs 214 crore through the voluntary retention route this month (till October 17), indicating continued interest in Indian debt instruments.

After eight straight sessions of losses driven by geopolitical jitters and relentless foreign investor selling, benchmark indices Nifty and Sensex staged a strong rebound, trading firmly in the green on Wednesday, October 1.

Here are 6 major reasons that have induced a sharp surge on the bourses today.

RBI policy

Investors cheered the pro-market initiatives of the Reserve Bank of India during its monetary policy meeting earlier today, even as the central bank unanimously decided to keep the repo rates unchanged at 5.50%. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said growth-inflation dynamics have shifted since the August policy, with the rationalisation of GST expected to have a cooling effect on price pressures. The overall inflation outlook has turned more benign, helped by a sharp fall in food prices. Consequently, the central bank has revised its average headline inflation forecast for FY26 downward to 2.6% from 3.1% earlier, while also trimming the estimate for the fourth quarter.

Bank stocks gain

HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank led the surge and helped the Nifty Bank index gain over 1%. To improve the flow of credit, the RBI raised the ceiling for taking loan against shares from the existing Rs 20 lakh to Rs 1 crore. It has also increased IPO financing limit to Rs 25 lakh, as part of a series of 5 measures announced by RBI to improve the flow of credit in the economy following a 100 basis point rate cut so far in the calendar year 2025. This is seen as a major boost for the banking sector, potentially shifting deal financing away from private credit and into the formal banking system.

Oversold conditions

The markets slipped for 8 straight days before today’s surge. To be sure, the Nifty slipped over 3% or about 800 points during the period. The 30-share Sensex also shed over 2,300 points or 3.8%. A buy on dips strategy followed by RBI’s robust commentary could be at play.

Rupee recovers

After opening flat, the Indian rupee gained 5 paise to 88.75 against the US dollar, to help bolster momentum in domestic equities. The dollar hovered near a one-week low versus major peers on Wednesday as the U.S. government headed towards a likely shutdown which would delay the release of crucial jobs data.

Crude impact

Oil prices, meanwhile, stayed under pressure on expectations of an OPEC+ production hike and the resumption of exports from Iraq’s Kurdistan region. Brent crude fell 1.3% to $67.10 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate dropped 1.5% to $62.51.

Positive global cues

US stocks closed higher on Tuesday as investors looked past concerns of a possible U.S. government shutdown, with Wall Street capping an unusually strong September. The S&P 500 rose 0.41% to 6,688.46, while the Nasdaq Composite added 0.31% to 22,660.01. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 81.82 points, or 0.18%, to end at 46,397.89 — marking a new record close.

Indian equities closed out August with a second straight month of losses, as the Nifty fell 1.38% in a holiday-shortened month and recorded its weakest two-month stretch since early 2023. The benchmark index has been weighed down by U.S. tariff shocks, foreign fund outflows, and profit-taking across key sectors. Investors now face a pivotal week that could test whether strong domestic growth, tax reform talks, and a diplomatic reset with China can revive sentiment.

The Nifty 50 and Sensex each lost more than 2.2% last week, dragged lower by U.S. tariffs on Indian goods. The United on August 27 doubled duties to 50% in response to India’s purchases of Russian oil, stoking fears of stress in export-heavy industries from textiles to metals and auto.

“Indian equities ended lower this week as early optimism was overshadowed by sustained selling amid rising global and domestic headwinds,” said Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments. He noted that “the subsequent imposition of tariffs on Indian goods further dented confidence, driving profit booking across sectors. Large caps declined, while mid- and small caps saw sharper losses on stretched valuations and heightened uncertainty.”

Foreign portfolio investors pulled about Rs 527 billion from equities in July and August, extending outflows from muted earnings and tariff-related risks. Brokerage Emkay Global said the direct GDP hit from tariffs could be limited to about 0.5% of FY26, but warned of “significant second-order risks to asset quality and employment.”

GDP resilience offers a buffer

India’s economy, however, showed unexpected strength in the June quarter. GDP grew 7.8% year-on-year, well above the 6.7% consensus estimate and higher than the 7.4% expansion in the prior quarter, BofA Securities noted.

“GDP growth of 7.8% for the first quarter of FY26 is encouraging and reconfirms the resilience of the Indian economy in the face of ongoing tariff turmoil and regional wars,” said Ashwini Shami, president and chief portfolio manager at OmniScience Capital.Shami pointed to services growth of 9.3% and a 9.7% jump in government spending as key drivers, while private consumption rose 7%. “The expected pick up in domestic consumption, private sector capex growth and sustained growth in fixed capital formation shall provide sustained economic growth which is a strong positive for the equity markets,” she said.BofA said the strong print “has all but ruled out a rate cut in October,” while maintaining its FY26 GDP forecast at 6.5% due to global risks from tariffs and trade disruptions.

GST Council meeting in focus

Attention now turns to the September 3-4 meeting of the GST Council, where Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will chair discussions on rationalising the tax regime. Markets are betting that a three-tier structure could emerge, with consumption and auto sectors seen as top beneficiaries.

“The next trigger is GST 2.0, with the final contours expected on 5-Sep-25: we see this as a major growth catalyst,” Emkay Global said, reaffirming its Nifty target of 28,000 for September 2026.

Nair of Geojit Investments said consumption-driven sectors—“FMCG, Durables, Discretionary, Cement, and Infrastructure”—remain well positioned to benefit from GST cuts and higher government spending.

Modi visits China

Adding a geopolitical dimension, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Sunday in his first visit to China in seven years, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit.

“We are committed to progressing our relations based on mutual respect, trust and sensitivities,” Modi told Xi, according to a clip posted on his official X account.

The meeting comes just days after Washington imposed punishing tariffs, with analysts noting that Modi and Xi are seeking to present a united front against Western pressure.

Outlook

Market watchers expect volatility to persist in the near term, with domestic growth triggers offset by external headwinds. “A resolution of tariff disputes could act as a key catalyst for market sentiment, although the reciprocal 25% tariff is expected to remain in place in the near to medium term,” said Nair of Geojit Investments.

Whether robust GDP growth, fiscal reforms, and geopolitical thawing can outweigh trade risks will be tested when markets reopen in September. For now, Nifty’s slide has left investors weighing whether the domestic resilience story can overcome global turbulence.
