DETROIT — Jeep maker Stellantis is leaning on technologies from automotive suppliers for its newest hybrid SUVs as the market for more fuel-efficient vehicles is expected to continue growing, CNBC has learned.

The trans-Atlantic automaker’s first-ever Jeep hybrid SUV for North America, its recently launched Cherokee, features a system from a Toyota-backed company called Blue Nexus, while its upcoming extended-range electric vehicles, or EREVs, are utilizing major technologies from Bosch, the world’s largest automotive supplier.

It’s not uncommon for automakers to use components from suppliers, but it’s less common for key systems or technologies, especially ones pioneered by a competitor like Toyota.

But Stellantis’ push is a prime example of broader market shifts away from all-electric vehicles and a way carmakers can more quickly get hybrid vehicles — which have been increasingly in demand even before oil prices spiked — to market, potentially at a lower capital cost. Many automakers have already lost billions of dollars due to massive spending on EVs, including developing and producing many of the technologies themselves.

The Jeep Cherokee, which is using Blue Nexus’ two-motor electric continuously variable hybrid transmission, and the upcoming Jeep Grand Wagoneer EREV are major launches for the automaker this year, especially as it attempts to regain market share in the U.S. Stellantis also plans to use the EREV system on its Ram pickup trucks.

“Electrification trends are pretty flat. Hybrid trends are absolutely growing,” Richard Cox, Jeep senior vice president of brand operations, told CNBC during a recent media event for the 2026 Cherokee. “So I think it was a big move in the right direction.”

Officials with Stellantis and the auto suppliers declined to comment on the tie-ups, but sources with each of the companies who weren’t permitted to speak publicly about the partnerships confirmed the details to CNBC.

Both hybrid systems operate differently. The Cherokee is more of a traditional hybrid vehicle, much like many of Toyota’s models, including the Prius.

The upcoming EREVs, meanwhile, drive like all-electric vehicles until an engine kicks in and works as a generator to power the vehicle’s electric motors when the vehicle’s battery is depleted. The engine powers the electric motors rather than the vehicle itself.

Both hybrid systems use Stellantis engines and have been integrated to meet the company’s own standards and driving dynamics, according to two sources with the automaker.

Both systems are also expected to significantly improve the fuel economy of the vehicles, including the Cherokee, that at 37 mpg combined is the most fuel-efficient, non-plug-in Jeep ever produced for the U.S.

“Consumers have been accepting of [full-hybrid electric vehicle] technology due to improvements in fuel economy, [a] wide portfolio of vehicles to choose from, and as they do not require lifestyle changes to benefit from the system,” said Eric Anderson, S&P Global Mobility associate director of Americas light vehicle powertrain forecasting.

From EVs to hybrids

Stellantis and other automakers invested billions of dollars in recent years to develop all-electric vehicles to meet federal regulations and unsubstantiated consumer demand, but most have pulled back on those investments and are eyeing hybrids to increase the fuel economy of vehicles and meet customers’ expectations.

Stellantis last month disclosed $26 billion in charges related to its EV plans, while its crosstown Detroit rivals also have announced write-downs. Ford Motor said it would record $19.5 billion in special charges as it pulls back on EV plans, while General Motors said its write-down would be $7.6 billion due to its EV changes.

Peter Tadros, president of Bosch’s North America power solutions, said the auto supplier has received an influx of inquiries into its hybrid systems as automakers look to pivot away from EVs and get to market quickly, with a reliable system and partner.

“There’s definitely a very big interest in these systems,” he told CNBC. “What’s been very apparent over the last few years is hybrid sales have increased regardless of what’s in the regulations, regardless of the political leaning. It’s been a consistent increase in the market.”

Led by Toyota, sales of hybrids in the U.S. have increased from 7.3% of the market in 2023 to 12.6% last year, according to S&P Global Mobility. That compares with sales of all-electric vehicles during that time rising from 7.5% to 8%.

S&P Global Mobility expects hybrid electric vehicles to account for 18.4% of U.S. sales this year, while all-electric vehicles are forecast to be 7.1%.

Tadros declined to comment on any relationship with Stellantis, citing company policies, but said it’s common for Bosch to work closely and partner with automakers to launch new vehicles and products.

“There is no one silver bullet, and everybody’s coming at it from a different direction,” he said. “It depends on each [automaker], where their strength, where their capital equipment, is and how they best utilize it, and this is their starting point.”

Bosch offers what the industry refers to as “off the shelf” components, which the company then integrates with each automaker’s particular use case. Other than EREV, Bosch also offers components for more traditional hybrids as well as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles that operate similar to EREVs but drive more like traditional gas-powered vehicles rather than EVs.

Toyota tech

Stellantis, more than some other automakers, has a history of teaming up with others in the industry to reduce research and development costs and capital. It has a long-standing partnership with German auto supplier ZF for transmissions and axle systems.

“They’ve often relied on supplier partners for things like that,” said Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of market research at communications and advisory firm Telemetry. “The benefit is, you can take something that has perhaps already been invested in, developed by a supplier. Take something off the shelf, you potentially bring it to market more quickly.”

Abuelsamid said downsides include the parts potentially not integrating perfectly with vehicle systems and a company not having control over the supply chain of key components.

In the 2000s, as the Toyota Prius was gaining traction in the U.S., the Japanese automaker cut deals with Ford and Nissan Motor to license or use certain hybrid technologies for their vehicles. But those deals and the vehicles that were produced from them, such as Ford Escape and Nissan Altima hybrids, did not last long.

Blue Nexus is a joint venture established in 2019 between Japanese automotive suppliers Denso and Aisin, which are both part of Toyota Motor’s parent group. It sells electrified components such as electronic axles, or e-axles, and hybrid systems such as the Toyota Hybrid System II, which includes the two-motor electric continuously variable hybrid transmission the Jeep Cherokee is using.

A representative from Blue Nexus could not be reached for comment. Toyota, Denso and Aisin declined to comment or did not respond for requests to comment.

U.S. shares of the company — created through a $52 billion combination of Italian American automaker Fiat Chrysler and France-based Groupe PSA on Jan. 16, 2021 — are down roughly 43% in the past five years. Italian-listed shares also are off roughly 40%.

Since the combined company’s stock debuted on the New York Stock Exchange on Jan. 19, 2021, days after the merger was completed, shares of the automaker were largely in the black — up as high as 74% in March 2024 — until Stellantis reported troubling financial results that year amid cost-cutting efforts meant to support higher profits and its multibillion-dollar push into electric vehicles.

Many of those plans are being altered or eliminated under new Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa, who succeeded Carlos Tavares last summer. Tavares, a longtime automotive executive, was largely credited with forming the company, but abruptly left Stellantis in December 2024.

Filosa did not rule out the possibility of regionally refocusing or shrinking the company’s vast portfolio of brands that also includes Italian nameplates Fiat and Alfa Romeo, which have not performed well domestically.

He said he believes the company should “stay together” following some speculation, including from Tavares, that it would be better to sell off assets or brands.

Investors have been eager to hear a new strategy for Stellantis after Tavares’ exit. He left amid troubling sales and financial results as the company strived to achieve 10% or greater profit margins and doubling net revenues under his “Dare Forward 2030” business plan.

U.S. shares of Stellantis since Filosa began as CEO on June 23 are up 2%. They closed Friday at $9.60 per share, down 4.2%.

Filosa this week declined to discuss the company’s past mistakes, but company executives previously told CNBC that Tavares’ fixation on cost reductions and profits hurt business, as well as the company’s products, employees and relationships with suppliers, unions and dealers.

Filosa has spent much of his time attempting to repair those bonds, especially with the company’s distraught U.S. franchised retailers. He’s also approved drastic changes to the company’s product plans, including reducing prices and reprioritizing products away from electrified vehicles.

“In the six months, I see the changes that we will make we need to make to create the bright future that we need,” he said regarding his tenure thus far as CEO.

Filosa has been undertaking a turnaround plan since he was named CEO in May. So far, his plans have included prioritizing the company’s Jeep and Ram brands in the U.S. as well as undoing many decisions his predecessor Carlos Tavares made to focus on all-electric vehicles.

“The strategy that we have in front of us is a strong one and will lead us to growth if we execute well,” he told reporters Wednesday during the Detroit Auto Show. “So, I believe it’s a year of execution.”

Filosa, wearing a Jeep vest over a white button-down shirt, said this year is a “first step” in remaking the company, which was formed five years ago through a merger of Fiat Chrysler and French automaker PSA Groupe.

He declined to discuss specifics, adding that his executive team will lay out a detailed future strategy for the automaker at a capital markets day in the first half of this year.

Filosa did not rule out the possibility of regionally refocusing or shrinking the company’s vast portfolio of brands that also include Italian nameplates Fiat and Alfa Romeo, which have not performed well domestically.

Filosa said he does believe that the company wants “to stay together” following some Wall Street speculation in recent years that it would be better to sell off assets or brands.

“We are building a culture,” Filosa said.

Filosa said the next step in the company’s plans will come next week during a meeting with more than 200 company executives that will focus on the company’s capital markets day as well as company culture and 2026 execution.

“We are a global company with strong regional roots,” Filosa said, referring to one of three guiding cultural principles he’s attempting to instill in the company. The others are being customer focused and working together.

Stellantis’ global sales under Tavares fell 12.3% from 6.5 million in 2021 — the year the company was formed — to 5.7 million in 2024. That included a roughly 27% collapse in the U.S. in that period to 1.3 million vehicles sold. The automaker dropped from fourth in U.S. sales to sixth, falling from an 11.6% market share to 8% during that time frame.

The automaker said Thursday that the 2027 Ram 1500 SRT TRX will be available late in 2026 for around $100,000. It was first produced for the 2021-2024 model years before being canceled as the company de-emphasized V-8 engines.

The TRX is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter “Hellcat” gas engine capable of 777 horsepower and 680 foot-pounds of torque. The automaker is calling it the “fastest and most powerful production gas pickup truck in the world,” capable of 0–60 mph in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 118 mph.

“We had to push it to the next level,” Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis said during a recent media event. “We’re super happy about this one coming back.”

Despite relatively low sales in the past due to the vehicle’s price, the TRX is viewed as a “halo” model for the brand, or a high-end vehicle that brings attention to Ram and potentially boosts sales for other models. It’s been a successful strategy for Kuniskis, especially with the company’s SRT performance vehicles.

Kuniskis aims to make more than 25 announcements through next year. Thus far they have included returning to NASCAR with mechanical bull rides and a new race truck, resurrecting Hemi V-8 engines with a new “Symbol of Protest,” and killing a long-promised battery-electric version of its 1500 truck.

The 2027 Ram 1500 SRT TRX will start at $99,995, excluding a mandatory $2,595 destination fee that bumps the price to $102,590. The initial TRX started at $71,690 in 2020, including destination.

Ram on Thursday also announced a new 6.7-liter Cummins high-output turbo diesel engine for its 2027 Ram Power Wagon heavy-duty truck with 430 horsepower and 1,075 foot-pounds of torque.

Many of the new efforts go against Stellantis’ previous plans to discontinue gas V-8 vehicles amid more stringent fuel economy regulations and penalties. But those policies have either been weakened or disappeared under the Trump administration.

Kuniskis said the rollback should help sales, but that he was “going to do it anyway” regardless of the standards.

Kuniskis has embraced V-8 engines again, including with resurrecting the TRX, as part of an effort to revive Stellantis’ U.S. sales, which plummeted under former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares from 2021 to 2024.

During that time, the automaker — formed in 2021 through a merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Groupe — fell from the No. 4 automaker in U.S. sales to No. 6.

Stellantis’ sales through the third quarter of last year were 6% lower compared with a year earlier. Cox Automotive expects the automaker to finish the year with 1.25 million sales in the U.S., down 4.4% from 2024 and off from more than 2 million sales in 2020.

Kuniskis, who also oversees all of Stellantis’ U.S. brands, said both Ram and Jeep — the automaker’s most critical domestic brands — are going “in the right direction” to capitalize on growth next year.

That means the automaker will have to conquest buyers from other brands.

“It’s still a strong industry, so as long as we get our piece of it, we’ll be OK,” Kuniskis said.

Jeep reset

Ram isn’t the only Stellantis brand looking for a revival.

Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf, much like Kuniskis, has been initiating a turnaround strategy for the company’s Jeep brand. Jeep has experienced years of annual sales declines since it hit record sales of more than 973,000 vehicles in 2018.

The “Jeep reset” plan includes repositioning the brand’s pricing, models and standard features, according to Broderdorf.

“This is going to be the last piece of the puzzle, I think, to resetting the foundation for Jeep this year and really getting into what makes it special going forward,” Broderdorf told CNBC during an interview Dec. 16. “It’s a much better Jeep.”

Kuniskis described the Jeep reset plan as “making Jeep more Jeep.”

The most recent actions essentially streamline Jeep’s product lineup into fewer models, more content and a pricing strategy with fewer overlaps, from smaller vehicles such as the Compass and Cherokee to the bigger Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer.

“The entire Jeep lineup is better,” Broderdorf said. “I think we’re laying a very strong foundation for growth going into next year, plus the new cars.”

New upcoming Jeeps include a resurrected Cherokee midsize SUV as well as an all-electric Recon inspired by the brand’s iconic Wrangler off-road SUV.

2025 could be the year that Jeep breaks the trend and notches its first U.S. sales increase since 2018, but Broderdorf said in mid-December that the brand will be close to the goal, so it could go either way.

Broderdorf said Jeep remains profitable despite the pricing changes as well as lower sales amid the turnaround plan.

“We’re going to grow healthy,” he said. “I think this is what the brand needs. We’re going to grow.”

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis reemerged from a seven-month retirement late last year saying he “missed the fight” and admitting the Stellantis brand was getting smashed in the marketplace by its competition.

Kuniskis walked on stage during a media event as the speakers blared Detroit rapper Eminem singing “Guess who’s back, back again.” He promised an aggressive turnaround for the embattled truck brand that is now getting underway and will extend through 2026.

The plan includes more than 25 announcements through next year. Thus far they have included a return to NASCAR with mechanical bull rides and a new race truck, the resurrection of Hemi V-8 engines with a new “Symbol of Protest,” and, most recently, a new industry-leading powertrain warranty for its Ram products.

Since returning after a CEO shake-up, Kuniskis is invigorated. He’s “flying without a parachute,” as he recently described it, while playing with borrowed time and house money since his unretirement. He’s going all in to launch a renaissance of Ram, which has experienced a 38% sales decline since its record year back in 2019.

“I have perfect clarity of my return because, after I left and had a chance to rest, I realized I didn’t need to leave, I just needed a break. Then I was itching to come back,” Kuniskis told CNBC during a recent interview in his relatively undecorated office. (He gave many of his career keepsakes away when he retired.) “We have a window of opportunity here to fix a lot of stuff, and some people are stressed out by that opportunity, and some people are fueled by it. Luckily, our team is fueled by it.”

Kuniskis, who was leading Ram and Dodge upon his retirement mid-last year, said an array of issues led to the brand’s current situation, including the automaker’s pricing, model launch cadence and, most importantly, problems with a redesign of its Ram 1500. That redesign led to production issues that are still being worked out more than a year after the vehicle’s launch.

“We tried to do too many things at once,” Kuniskis said of the Ram 1500. “We literally changed everything instead of doing a cadence of the changes.”

Kuniskis didn’t touch on the larger issues Stellantis was dealing with under former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, who left the automaker in December. Kuniskis was recruited back to Ram amid the change in leadership.

Ram is one of the most crucial of Stellantis’ 14 brands — if not the most important. It competes in the highly profitable full-size pickup truck market and industry experts said its success is key to the company reestablishing itself in the commercial sales market.

“It’s kind of the backbone of their business,” said Joseph Yoon, consumer insights analyst at CarMax‘s data and consumer car shopping site Edmunds.com. “The market share is hugely important.”

Market share for the Ram 1500 in the U.S. full-size pickup truck market has plummeted from 17.8% in 2019 to 8.4% through roughly the first half of this year, according to Edmunds.

Ram’s sales of full-size trucks, which includes the 1500 and larger versions, have declined 41% from 2019 through 2024, according to company data, allowing competitors such as General Motors and Toyota Motor to increase sales during that time.

While it’s early into the turnaround plan, which goes into next year, Ram has already resurrected its popular Hemi V-8 engine; reintroduced lower-priced pickup truck models; announced a return to NASCAR; and introduced a 10-year/100,000 limited powertrain warranty for new trucks across its lineup, among other things.

Kuniskis has said further announcements could encompass several new potential vehicles, including a passenger van and midsize pickup truck that’s expected in 2027. He’s also launched a “Nothing Stops Ram” marketing campaign and delayed the brand’s electrified pickup trucks amid low market demand.

“There’s always a method to the madness,” Kuniskis said. “There’s always a business reason behind something that seems like fun.”

If riders can stay on for 15 seconds, they receive a special-edition T-shirt that can’t be purchased.

Its splashy return to NASCAR earlier this month in Michigan also included a new truck design, as well as a vehicle doing doughnut burnouts.

Kuniskis declined to disclose sales targets for the Ram brand or its full-size pickup trucks, but he said the company is aiming for a market share somewhere between 20% and 29.9% for its full-size trucks by the end of the plan. Ram Trucks had a roughly 17% share of the U.S. full-size pickup truck market in 2024, according to industry data.

“I know exactly where we want to be and what our expectations are,” he said. “I should legitimately have a market share that starts with a two. … That’s a starting point for us.”

But Kuniskis said market share is only one metric and that plant utilization and profits are also important. While Ram’s overall sales are down, he said retail sales — a closely watched metric — are expected to be up by about 28% through the first half of the year.

“You don’t want to chase share just for the sake of chasing share,” he said. “I want to have all plants running at full capacity to maximize my efficiency.”

“When you were in school, they told you ‘Get an ‘A,’ everything will be great. You’ll be successful in life.’ Not true.

Kuniskis handed out the wristbands to his team as well as the brand’s dealers during his return to an annual dealer conference in January as a way to regain the trust of retailers after years of contentious relations over incentives, products and price increases.

So far it seems to be working, according to Michael Bettenhausen, a dealer in Illinois who chairs the Stellantis National Dealer Council.

“Everything that Tim has showed us has us convinced that the brand is on a path to get back to the volumes that we’ve seen from years past,” Bettenhausen said. “We’re really excited that Tim is leading this charge. It’s really remarkable.”

Bettenhausen also said the full-size pickup truck market is key to the success of the company and its dealers. It is made up of buyers who often have generational loyalties to a brand and act as ambassadors for it.

“Customer loyalty is a huge part of that business,” Yoon said. “For a lot of these people, it doesn’t matter if their brand is objectively the best product or not. It’s just that whatever the automaker is doing, they feel like it’s best for them.”

Bringing back the automaker’s well-known Hemi V-8 may have been a good start, as Kuniskis said the company received 12,000 Hemi orders on the first day pickup trucks with the engine were available for dealers to order.

As the Hemi returns, Ram’s electrification plans, including a new plug-in truck and an all-electric model, are being delayed. Kuniskis declined to discuss production timing for the all-electric model, which was initially expected last year. He said the plug-in model — known as an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV — will begin production this year but declined to specify when consumer sales will begin.

Kuniskis said he believes the EREV will be more of a differentiator in the market and more important in the brand’s turnaround plan through 2026.

“I’m really bullish on the year. I’m really proud of how we started this year and that’s just using traditional tactics,” Kuniskis said. “We haven’t gotten to the new stuff yet.”

The plans, as outlined in an internal message Wednesday to U.S. employees, included creating 1,500 jobs and reopening a plant in Illinois to build a new midsize pickup truck in 2027; building a new version of the Dodge Durango SUV that was being considered for Mexico at a Detroit plant instead; and adding more support for plants in Toledo, Ohio, and Kokomo, Indiana.

“John told the President that building on our proud, more than 100-year history in the U.S., we plan to continue that legacy by further strengthening our U.S. manufacturing footprint and providing stability for our great American workforce,” Antonio Filosa, head of Stellantis’ North American operations, said in the message.

Leaders from each of the “Big Three” automakers in Detroit have now separately spoken or met with Trump. They also were among the companies to each donate $1 million to Trump’s inauguration.

Some of the Stellantis’ announcements, such as building the midsize pickup truck in Illinois, were previously expected under a contract with the United Auto Workers union. However, they had come into question under strategic decisions made by former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares.

UAW President Shawn Fain, who had been campaigning for Tavares’ firing, hailed the announced plans. The union had previously filed grievances and held anti-Stellantis rallies over job cuts and potential changes to the company’s production plans.

“This victory is a testament to the power of workers standing together and holding a billion-dollar corporation accountable. We’ve shown that we will do what it takes to protect the good union jobs that are the lifeblood of places like Belvidere, Detroit, Kokomo, and beyond,” Fain said in a statement Wednesday.
