CNBC’s Jim Cramer on Friday said SpaceX’s blockbuster debut could pave the way for a new wave of AI-related equity offerings and help create a more constructive backdrop for stocks.

“Never has one initial public offering captivated the minds of Wall Street and perhaps Main Street as much as Elon Musk’s SpaceX,” the “Mad Money” host said.

Elon Musk’s rocket company debuted Friday and finished the session at $161 per share, giving SpaceX a market value of roughly $2.1 trillion. Cramer said the success of the offering could encourage other companies to tap the market soon, particularly AI players such as Anthropic. The startup behind the Claude models confidentially filed for an IPO earlier this month. Additionally, he said companies including Microsoft, Meta and Amazon may decide it’s a good time to sell stock to help fund their AI buildouts — similar to what Google parent Alphabet is doing.

“Bankers work fast these days,” Cramer said, explaining the idea would be to “strike while the iron is hot.”

“I don’t know if they can resist selling stock after seeing how SpaceX played out,” he added.

Cramer also said investors should keep a close eye on developments in the Middle East. While he remains skeptical that peace is fully at hand, a lasting resolution could send oil prices lower and help ease inflation pressures.

“If we get peace, the first thing you have to realize is the process toward lowering inflation will begin with a collapse in the price of oil,” he said.

Cramer said he initially worried the SpaceX offering could overwhelm the market, but now believes its successful debut could help support sentiment and set the stage for a constructive week ahead.

“The success of today’s placement of SpaceX is something to be studied for years,” he said. “It’s a win for the market, and if we get peace, it won’t be stopped.”

With that backdrop, Cramer turned to the shortened trading week ahead.

Monday

Corporate news is relatively light, but Cramer said he’ll be tuning into Dave & Buster’s earnings call, which could offer valuable insight into consumer spending trends.

Tuesday

Tuesday’s housing starts report will provide a key read on the housing market. Cramer said a soft housing starts report could strengthen the case for new Federal Reserve chief Kevin Warsh to cut rates.

“I know lots of people have been saying that the economy is too strong and we need to raise rates,” he said. “I think these people are dreaming.”

Wednesday

Cramer plans to watch an analyst meeting hosted by oil services giant SLB for clues about whether producers are increasing drilling activity following the recent surge in crude prices.

On Wednesday, investors will also get the latest retail sales data, offering another look at the health of the consumer and whether spending is beginning to soften. Cramer thinks “we’ll also see some weaker retail sales this morning, again, favoring a rate cut.”

The biggest event of the day, though, belongs to the Fed meeting and Warsh’s afternoon press conference.

“I predict Warsh will begin the process of setting us up for rate cuts, because the underlying problems in the economy are persistent, but inflation will go away once we make a deal with the Iranians.”

Shortly before the opening of Nasdaq trading on Friday, Elon Musk stepped in front of a cheerful crowd at SpaceX’s company town in Texas. His rocket maker was about to hit the public market at a valuation of around $2 trillion, instantly becoming the sixth most-valuable U.S. company.

Musk, weeks shy of his 55th birthday, told staffers that, in the early days of the company, he gave it “less than 10% chance of succeeding.”

“If people had told me this was going to happen, I was like, man, you must be smoking some really good crack,” said Musk, who founded SpaceX in 2002 and has grown it to 22,000 full-time employees. “Because I think this company is going to fail.”

Musk is now the world’s first trillionaire after his company pulled off the largest IPO on record, raising $75 billion, an amount roughly triple size of the next-biggest U.S. offering, which was Alibaba’s in 2014. There are 10 U.S. companies worth at least $1 trillion. Musk runs two of them.

Whatever uncertainty Musk professed to have felt when SpaceX was getting off the ground, he showed none of that in the days leading up to the IPO. In an abbreviated roadshow, SpaceX priced its IPO at $135 and told investors to take it or leave it. There was no price range used to gauge demand and no haggling with prospective shareholders.

That’s despite SpaceX having a fraction the revenue of any of tech’s megacaps and racking up a $4.9 billion loss last year, with total losses since its founding of over $41 billion. After the stock’s close on Friday, SpaceX was worth $2.1 trillion, giving it a multiple of 112 times last year’s revenue.

“This was not a deal that was priced based on market forces,” said Lloyd Greif, an investment banker with Greif & Co. in Los Angeles. “This was a deal based on what one man wanted. And when one man wants it, one man gets it, if that one man is Elon Musk.”

Meanwhile, all of those mentions of trillions and the trillionaire added fuel to the discourse surrounding wealth disparity as consumers deal with crippling inflation due largely to the war in Iran. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist, wrote on social media that Musk’s new status is a “call to action to take on the unprecedented income and wealth inequality that now exists.” And California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on X, which is owned by SpaceX, that, “Americans are struggling to pay for groceries and gas while Elon Musk becomes a TRILLIONAIRE.”

Beyond the money, there are the AI concerns. Safe AI Now, a group of tech and faith leaders, erected an inflatable effigy of a shirtless Musk in Times Square seeking to draw attention to the company’s poor AI safety track record.

None of that dampened the mood on Wall Street, which has been desperate to see new offerings after a historically slow period of IPOs dating back to late 2021. In closing the day up 19% and consistently holding well above the offer price, SpaceX’s IPO lifted confidence in potential deals later this year from artificial intelligence model giants OpenAI and Anthropic, which are each valued at close to $1 trillion on the private market.

Former Nasdaq CEO Robert Greifeld said he “would definitely bet” that OpenAI and Anthropic will go public in 2026. Both companies announced this month that they confidentially filed IPO paperwork.

Making Facebook’s IPO look small

More than 500 million SpaceX shares changed hands throughout the day on Friday, a number approaching Facebook’s market debut in 2012, when roughly 580 million shares were traded. Facebook’s IPO set a record at the time, raising $16 billion. At the end of its first day of trading, Facebook was worth about $100 billion, or one-twentieth SpaceX’s current market cap.

One big similarity between the two companies is that they’re founder controlled. But even there, SpaceX is on another level. At the time of Facebook’s IPO, CEO Mark Zuckerberg had the ability to control 56% of the voting power. For Musk at SpaceX, that number is above 82%.

Musk is certainly not alone in seeing a financial windfall from SpaceX’s IPO.

The offering pushed Alphabet’s stake past the $100 billion mark, after the company invested about $900 million in SpaceX in 2015. Valor Equity Partners, run by longtime Musk pal Antonio Gracias, is sitting on a stake worth over $80 billion, mostly owned by the firm’s clients.

In addition to the institutional investors, the IPO reportedly minted some 4,400 millionaires among the ranks of current and former SpaceX employees.

Underwriters gained access to additional shares, or their greenshoe overallotment, on one colorful condition.

“Only if the bankers all wore green shoes,” venture capitalist Steve Jurvetson, who invested in SpaceX in 2009, wrote in a post on X. Jurvetson included a photo of green and white Nike sneakers decorated with the company’s logo.

Throughout the morning, some of Musk’s top investors and good friends joined CNBC to talk about the historic event. Gracias was one of the guests.

The Valor founder and CEO said he met Musk more than 20 years ago through mutual friend David Sacks, a venture capitalist who until recently served as President Donald Trump’s AI and crypto czar. Gracias said he invested in PayPal “in the old days,” when Musk and Sacks were among the founding crew, and put early money into Tesla and SpaceX. In both cases, he said his firm worked “on hard problems to try and help these companies succeed.”

Gracias’ relationship with Musk extends beyond business. He spent some time last year working with Musk as part of the Trump Administration’s DOGE effort to slash the federal workforce, regulations and government spending. Gracias also previously sat on the boards of Tesla and other Musk companies. As for SpaceX, Gracias said he plans to hold onto the stock “as long as I possibly can.”

Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire, whose firm invested in SpaceX in 2019, called Musk a “generational entrepreneur,” likening his planned delivery of the Starship launch vehicle to the introduction of railroads. He said he was confident the company could be generating hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue in 2030.

Maguire said Sequoia will distribute some shares to investors “if we feel like the valuation is way ahead of its skis,” but said that, “as an individual, I’m going to hold my shares forever.”

‘Heavily dependent on Starship’

Skeptics of SpaceX’s lofty valuation questioned the logic of it all. The company counts on its Starlink satellite internet service for the bulk of its revenue and it’s the only profitable part of the business. But investors don’t pay historically high multiples for broadband service, no matter how good it is.

The space launch division is burning cash and is counting on the Starship rocket to scale to much better economics than the Falcon fleet. And the AI unit, which came in through the acquisition of Musk’s xAI, is currently a money pit that’s pivoted to leasing out massive amounts of capacity to the likes of Anthropic and Google.

Financial research firm CFRA gave SpaceX a sell rating and price target of $115, minutes after the company’s Nasdaq debut. Analysts said SpaceX has “elevated valuation expectations,” and living up to them would require proving the viability of Starship, expanding Starlink, generating returns from AI infrastructure, and eventually producing consistent free cash flows.

“Our primary concern is that SpaceX’s long-term strategy remains heavily dependent on Starship,” CFRA analyst Keith Snyder wrote in a note to clients, saying that the Starship rocket could be a “bottleneck” for various SpaceX initiatives.

Then there’s SpaceX’s stated $28.5 trillion total addressable market across space, connectivity and AI. That figure doesn’t include other literal moonshots like space tourism, asteroid mining or manufacturing in orbit. Nor does it include transportation to Mars.

Aswath Damodaran, a New York University finance professor, told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” on Friday that seeing the addressable market figure SpaceX provided made him think the prospectus was written by Grok, the xAI chatbot, rather than a banker.

“This is a hallucination,” Damodaran said. “I would be embarrassed to even put that number out.”

Maguire, a Musk permabull, said he stands by the projection.

“I would even argue it’s an underestimate,” he said.

While Musk is the face of SpaceX, getting to this point has a lot to do with the work of Gwynne Shotwell, the company’s operating chief and one of its first employees.

In an exclusive interview with CNBC ahead of the IPO, Shotwell responded to a question about whether her boss would ever combine SpaceX with Tesla. It’s a potential transaction that’s long been rumored about, even more since Musk merged SpaceX with xAI after previously doing the same with xAI and X.

Shotwell, whose stake in SpaceX is now worth over $2 billion, didn’t dismiss the possibility, but made clear that it’s not on her priority list.

“There’s no question that there are synergies between Tesla and SpaceX in our futures,” Shotwell told CNBC’s Morgan Brennan at Starbase. “There’s a convergence of what we’re all trying to accomplish in the future, but right now I’m focused on keeping the lights on here, keeping rockets in production, flying rockets, flying people, getting to the International Space Station, and critically providing broadband to folks that don’t have access.”

Musk, for his part, spent a fair amount of time on Friday appearing to relish the moment. As his company’s IPO was dominating the news cycle, Musk was active on social media, mostly reposting messages, videos and photos from supporters touting his company’s success. He didn’t write much, but he did have one message he wanted to share on X.

“I love the incredible people of SpaceX beyond words,” he wrote.

Carriers are battling for higher-spending customers, including by upgrading once-slow, expensive and clunky in-flight internet to higher speeds. They have also been weighing other revenue streams, like personalized ads for travelers.

SpaceX, meanwhile, is preparing to go public in what’s likely to be a record IPO next month. Its connectivity unit, which includes Starlink, posted revenue of $11.39 billion last year, making up 61% of total sales, SpaceX said in a filing for its initial public offering earlier this month.

CNBC’s Jim Cramer said Friday he is growing increasingly concerned about signs of speculative excess in the IPO market.

The “Mad Money” host warned he didn’t want to “end up with another Cerebras,” arguing that the highly anticipated debut of Elon Musk’s SpaceX could fuel another wave of speculative buying.

SpaceX is expected to go public in June and could release its prospectus as soon as next week, CNBC reported Thursday. However, after the blockbuster debut of AI chipmaker Cerebras Systems on Thursday, Cramer said demand for shares of Elon Musk’s rocket company could be even more intense.

Cramer noted that various media reports suggest the offering could value SpaceX — home to Starlink satellite internet, social-media site X, and the Grok chatbot — between $1.75 trillion and $2 trillion. While he said he understands investor enthusiasm around Musk and the company’s businesses, he warned the stock could quickly become detached from fundamentals if underwriters release too few shares to the public.

“If SpaceX issues just a sliver of stock…this company could have a $5 trillion valuation,” he said. “SpaceX would create a bubble unto its own,” he said.

Cramer warned that it could be a precedent-setting event for other high-profile artificial intelligence companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, which are considering public offerings of their own. A wave of massive technology IPOs could begin weighing on the overall market as investors sell existing holdings to raise cash to buy the new issues, Cramer said.

“Remember what I always say,” he said. “The stock market, like any other market, is all about supply and demand. Too much supply and the market breaks down.”

Still, Cramer said the outcome will largely depend on how underwriters structure the deal, urging them to avoid engineering the type of explosive first-day pop that fueled speculative excess during the dot-com era.

“Hope the underwriters act responsibly rather than engineering the pops of a lifetime,” he said. “They did the latter during the dotcom era and that ended horribly.”

According to the Information, the highly anticipated stock market debut for SpaceX could raise over $75 billion. CNBC previously reported that it could be the biggest IPO ever, seeking a $1.75 trillion valuation.

SpaceX acquired Musk’s xAI last month in a deal valuing the combined company at $1.25 trillion.

The space sector, which includes companies focused on national defense, has benefited from excitement surrounding SpaceX, President Donald Trump’s plans for a “Golden Dome” defense system and soaring demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The rapid buildout of data centers to support AI has been blamed for rising electricity costs. Sending data centers into space has been proposed as a solution, but faces numerous barriers, including high costs and limited rocket launch availability.

SpaceX currently operates the Starlink constellation, with over 9,500 satellites in orbit. In January, Musk proposed a larger project that would launch 1 million satellites, an effort that’s been staunchly opposed by scientists for environmental threats.

SpaceX moved 1,021 Bitcoin worth about $94.48 million on December 10, according to on-chain alerts from blockchain trackers. The transfer was sent to wallets tied to Coinbase Prime, raising questions about whether the company is reshaping part of its treasury while attention grows around its potential public listing.

Ledger Shuffle Raises Questions

Reports have disclosed that this move is only the latest in a series of large bitcoin transfers involving wallets believed to be linked to SpaceX.

Analysts tracking the transactions say the pattern looks more like a shift into institutional custody rather than an immediate market sale, since Coinbase Prime is commonly used for storage and structured trades by large companies.

SpaceX is estimated to hold around 8,285 BTC, a stash worth roughly $770 million based on recent market prices. That amount places the company among the biggest private holders of bitcoin.

Records show the balance was once higher during 2022, though part of it has been reduced over time as transfers continued.

SpaceX: IPO Talk Adds Pressure

At the same time, reports from major outlets say SpaceX is preparing for an initial public offering that could take place in 2026.

Coverage has suggested the fundraising round may target tens of billions of dollars, and estimates of the company’s possible valuation range from $800 billion to more than $1.5 trillion.

Elon Musk reacted on social media to one of the reports, saying the information was accurate, which added more weight to expectations that a listing is being planned.

Because companies often adjust their balance sheets ahead of a public offering, analysts say moving crypto into institutional platforms would not be unusual. It can be done for audits, custody needs, or overall treasury preparation before large financial transactions.

BTCUSD now trading at $90,174. Chart: TradingView

What The Move Might Signal

A transfer into Coinbase Prime does not automatically mean a bitcoin sale is underway. Institutional accounts can hold assets for long periods without sending them directly to the open market.

Traders watching the activity say that only an actual sale — not a custody transfer — would create immediate pressure on Bitcoin prices.

Still, the timing stands out. The latest 1,021 BTC move comes during a period where SpaceX’s on-chain activity has increased. More transfers may follow if the company continues preparing documents and financial disclosures linked to a potential public listing.

The main question now is whether the recent shift was routine treasury work or part of a larger strategy connected to the IPO.

SpaceX has not issued a public statement on the transaction, leaving analysts to rely on blockchain data and regulatory reporting to understand what comes next.

A SpaceX Starship rocket on Wednesday exploded at the Starbase facility in Texas during routine testing in preparation for a launch flight, according to local authorities and live stream footage.

The rocket “experienced a major anomaly while on a test stand at Starbase” at 11 p.m. local time, SpaceX said on social media, noting “a safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for.”

Local authorities said that Starship “suffered a catastrophic failure and exploded,” with no injuries reported at the time of writing and an investigation is now underway. Live stream footage of Starbase showed the rocket burst into flame, shooting a large fireball into the sky.

Another Starship launch was expected to take place by the end of this month.

It’s been a tempestuous ride for Elon Musk’s mammoth Starship, after three flight launch attempts devolved in fiery glory and air-traffic stopping debris this year to date. Notably, the rocket model has taken off successfully in previous instances, but its vast scale — standing 120 meters (394 feet) tall when factoring in the Super Heavy booster — has raised concerns over its overall reliability and requirements for orbital refueling once in flight.

Yet Musk has clinched his hopes on Starship as the key vehicle for both NASA’s third and fourth Artemis missions — part of a broader plan to return humans to the Moon — due to take place over 2027-2028. The rocket is also set to play a role in launching the Starlab private space station in the transition to commercial space orbiting labs once the International Space Station retires after 2030.

Critically, Starship is also central to Musk’s — and former ally U.S. President Donald Trump’s — broader ambitions to colonize Mars. The rocket is set to ferry Optimus robots to the red planet by the end of 2026, with Musk in March saying, “If those landings go well, then human landings may start as soon as 2029, although 2031 is more likely.”

The Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday that SpaceX’s Starship rocket is grounded until the company and regulator complete an investigation into the midflight failure of the most recent test flight, which forced airlines to divert flights.

SpaceX must complete the investigation and put in place any required corrective actions before the FAA issues the company with a new license to launch Starship again.

SpaceX launched the seventh test flight of its Starship rocket on Thursday, but lost communication with the upper stage of the rocket that continues on into space.

The company’s webcast showed data stopped transmitting from Starship about nine minutes into the launch.

“We can confirm that we did lose the ship,” SpaceX senior manager of quality systems engineering Kate Tice said.

SpaceX said in a post on X that the ship broke up during its ascent burn and that it would “continue to review data from today’s flight test to better understand root cause.” In a later statement, the company said “initial data indicates a fire developed” near the tail end of Starship and destroyed the vehicle.

After the rocket lost communication, social media users posted photos and videos of what appeared to be fireballs in the sky near the Caribbean islands. Starship’s launch trajectory takes it due east from Texas, which means the fireballs are likely debris from the rocket breaking apart and reentering the atmosphere.

In a statement, SpaceX said that Starship debris fell “into the Atlantic Ocean within the predefined hazard areas.” The company establishes these potential risk areas with the Federal Aviation Administration before the launch.

The FAA issued a warning to pilots of a “dangerous area for falling debris of rocket Starship,” according to a notice. Multiple flights above the Caribbean diverted and appeared to be turning around, including commercial and cargo planes of JetBlue, Spirit, and FedEx, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware.

“The FAA briefly slowed and diverted aircraft around the area where space vehicle debris was falling. Normal operations have resumed,” the regulator said in a statement.

The airlines did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment. As is required for rocket launches, standard air traffic control advisories were in place. Record-breaking demand for both launches and flights means that rockets compete with planes for limited airspace, especially near Florida.

Additionally, the FAA confirmed that it was “assessing” the anomaly that occurred during SpaceX’s Starship flight. The FAA often grounds rockets after midflight failures, requiring that space companies perform a mishap investigation and put in place corrective actions before the regulator issues a new launch license.

The FAA has not received any reports of injuries or property damage from Starship debris, a spokesperson told CNBC.

There were no people on board the Starship flight. However, Elon Musk’s company was flying 10 “Starlink simulators” in the rocket’s payload bay and planned to attempt to deploy the satellite-like objects once in space. This would have been a key test of the rocket’s capabilities, as SpaceX needs Starship to deploy its much larger and heavier upcoming generation of Starlink satellites.

While SpaceX didn’t specify what the Starlink simulators were made of, mass simulators are commonly used in rocket vehicle development and are often simple constructions of metal or concrete that weigh roughly the same as the object in question.

SpaceX has flown the full Starship rocket system on six spaceflight tests so far since April 2023, at a steadily increasing cadence.

The Super Heavy booster, which stands 232 feet tall, is what begins the rocket’s journey to space. At its base are 33 Raptor engines, which together produce 16.7 million pounds of thrust — about double the 8.8 million pounds of thrust of NASA’s Space Launch System rocket, which launched for the first time in 2022.

Starship itself, at 171 feet tall, has six Raptor engines — three for use while in the Earth’s atmosphere and three for operating in the vacuum of space.

The rocket is powered by liquid oxygen and liquid methane. The full system requires more than 10 million pounds of propellant for launch.

The Starship flying on this launch, tagged as Ship 33, also represents a second-generation version of the vehicle, called “Block 2.”

SpaceX noted that the “significant upgrades” to this vehicle include changes to the flaps on the vehicle’s nose, redesigns of its propulsion system to boost performance, an enhanced flight computer, 30 cameras placed along the vehicle for monitoring the rocket and a reinforced heat shield.

Additionally, the booster for this flight attempt features a reused Raptor engine. That engine flew during the fifth test flight last year.

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket is grounded, pending an incident investigation, after an inflight failure — a rare misfire for the company’s workhorse vehicle.

The mission, known as “Starlink Group 9-3,” launched from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base on Thursday evening and was carrying 20 satellites bound for low Earth orbit.

The rocket’s lower first stage, or booster, operated as expected before returning to land. But the rocket’s upper second stage failed to reignite its engine as planned and was destroyed, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed.

“Upper stage restart to raise perigee resulted in an engine RUD for reasons currently unknown,” Musk wrote in a post on social media. RUD, or “rapid unscheduled disassembly,” is a term SpaceX uses to refer to an explosive or destructive event. The company said in a later update that the engine failure came after a leak of liquid oxygen in the second stage.

Falcon 9 is grounded until the Federal Aviation Administration signs off on SpaceX’s investigation of the incident, the federal regulator confirmed.

“The FAA will be involved in every step of the investigation process and must approve SpaceX’s final report, including any corrective actions,” the agency said in a statement to CNBC.

SpaceX still deployed the 20 Starlink satellites but noted that the second stage engine failure means the satellites were in “a lower than intended orbit.” In an update Friday afternoon, the company said it made contact with 10 of the satellites in an effort to use the satellites onboard thrusters to climb higher in orbit.

Despite the attempted recovery, SpaceX confirmed that the “enormously high-drag environment” from being in the wrong, lower orbit means the satellites will not be recovered. The 20 satellites will re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere and burn up.

“They do not pose a threat to other satellites in orbit or to public safety,” the company wrote in a statement on its website.
