TikTok has agreed to settle with a plaintiff and will no longer be part of a high-profile social media kicking off on Tuesday.

An attorney for the plaintiff said the trial, held in Los Angeles Superior Court, will proceed as scheduled against Meta and Alphabet’s YouTube.

The trial is the first of multiple major legal cases against social media companies in 2026 that have drawn comparisons to lawsuits brought against ‘Big Tobacco’ in the 1990s.

“This is a good resolution, and we are pleased with the settlement,” Mark Lanier, an attorney representing the plaintiff said in a statement. “Our focus has now turned to the Meta and YouTube for this trial.”

Last week Snap, the parent company of the Snapchat social media app, reached an agreement to settle with the plaintiff.

Instacart will pay $60 million to settle allegations by the Federal Trade Commission that it misled users with false advertising and deployed “unlawful subscription enrollment” practices.

The federal agency alleged that Instacart used deceptive tactics in its subscription sign-up and “satisfaction guarantee” advertising that caused consumers to pay more in fees, and prevented them from securing refunds.

For example, the FTC said Instacart falsely dangled promises of “free delivery” to consumers on their first order, while shoppers were still required to pay a mandatory service fee to get their groceries delivered.

The FTC also said that Instacart falsely advertised full refunds for users who had problems with their order.

“Instacart misled consumers by advertising free delivery services — and then charging consumers to have groceries delivered — and failing to disclose to consumers that signed up for a free trial that they would be automatically enrolled into its subscription program,” Christopher Mufarrige, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement.

In a blog post, Instacart acknowledged the FTC settlement but denied “any allegations of wrongdoing by the agency.”

The grocery delivery platform said it uses “straightforward marketing, transparent pricing and fees, clear terms, easy cancellation and generous refund policies” that comply with the law.

“This settlement allows us to move forward and remain focused on what’s important to our company: delivering value for customers, shoppers and retail and brand partners in the communities we serve,” an Instacart spokesperson said.

The move comes as Instacart reportedly faces a separate probe by the FTC into its pricing practices.

The probe was launched after a wide-ranging study was released last week showing that its algorithmic pricing tools caused shoppers to pay different prices for identical items from the same store.

News of the FTC probe sent Instacart shares lower by about 7% in extended trading on Wednesday. The stock closed down more than 1% on Thursday.

The FTC has recently ramped its scrutiny of companies alleged to be using deceptive billing and enrollment schemes.

It sued Uber in April, claiming the ride-hail provider charged users for Uber One subscriptions without their consent. On Monday, 21 states joined the agency’s lawsuit as part of an amended complaint.

In September, the agency sued Live Nation and Ticketmaster for allegedly using bait-and-switch pricing tactics and illegally coordinating with ticket brokers.

Earlier this month, the FTC said it was sending more than $27.6 million to consumers who were unknowingly enrolled in and charged for plans that shipped them products marketed to promote weight loss, clear skin and other health-care benefits.

YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5 million to settle a lawsuit involving the suspension of President Donald Trump’s account following the U.S. Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021.

The settlement “shall not constitute an admission of liability or fault,” on behalf of the defendants or related parties, according to a filing on Monday from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Trump sued YouTube, Facebook and Twitter in mid-2021, after the companies suspended his accounts on their platforms over concerns related to the incitement of violence.

Since Trump won a second term in November and returned to the White House in January, the tech companies have been settling their disputes with the president. Facebook-parent Meta said in January that it would pay $25 million to settle its lawsuit with Trump. The following month, Elon Musk’s X, formerly Twitter, agreed to settle its Trump-related case for roughly $10 million.

In August, several Democratic senators, including Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, sent a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and YouTube CEO Neal Mohan expressing their concern over a possible settlement with the president.

The senators said in the letter that they worried such an action would be part of a “quid-pro-quo arrangement to avoid full accountability for violating federal competition, consumer protection, and labor laws, circumstances that could result in the company running afoul of federal bribery laws.”

Anthropic has agreed to pay at least $1.5 billion to settle a class action lawsuit with a group of authors, who claimed the artificial intelligence startup had illegally accessed their books.

The company will pay roughly $3,000 per book plus interest, and agreed to destroy the datasets containing the allegedly pirated material, according to a filing on Friday.

The lawsuit against Anthropic has been closely watched by AI startups and media companies that have been trying to determine what copyright infringement means in the AI era. If Anthropic’s settlement is approved, it will be the largest publicly reported copyright recovery in history, according to the filing.

“This settlement sends a powerful message to AI companies and creators alike that taking copyrighted works from these pirate websites is wrong,” Justin Nelson, the attorney for the plaintiffs, told CNBC in a statement.

Anthropic did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, was brought last year by authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber and Kirk Wallace Johnson. The suit alleged that Anthropic had carried out “largescale copyright infringement by downloading and commercially exploiting books that it obtained from allegedly pirated datasets,” the filing said.

In June, a judge ruled that Anthropic’s use of books to train its AI models was “fair use,” but ordered a trial to assess whether the company infringed on copyright by obtaining works from the databases Library Genesis and Pirate Library Mirror. The case was slated to proceed to trial in December, according to Friday’s filing.

Earlier this week, Anthropic said it closed a $13 billion funding round that valued the company at $183 billion. The financing was led by Iconiq, Fidelity Management and Lightspeed Venture Partners.

Shaquille O’Neal has agreed to pay $1.8 million to settle claims that he misled investors by promoting the now-bankrupt crypto exchange FTX.

The retired NBA superstar, who once urged fans to trust the platform, will resolve the allegations without admitting wrongdoing. But the deal marks one of the first high-profile settlements in the legal reckoning over FTX’s collapse.

The proposed settlement, filed in Florida federal court, would end a class action lawsuit accusing O’Neal of presenting FTX as a trustworthy and legitimate investment tool — particularly at live events and in social media content — while allegedly helping drive adoption of unregistered securities.

The class includes anyone who deposited money into FTX or held its proprietary token, FTT, between May 2019 and late 2022.

If the overseeing judge approves the deal, O’Neal’s $1.8 million payout will cover all legal fees, notice and administration costs and payouts to eligible investors. The arrangement also includes a sweeping release from future liability, and a provision barring him from seeking reimbursement from the FTX bankruptcy estate.

In short: The check he’s writing is final — and all-inclusive.

“We are pleased to have this matter behind us,” counsel for O’Neal said in a statement.

Unlike other celebrity defendants and former FTX endorsers — including Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen and Steph Curry — who had their claims largely dismissed, O’Neal remained entangled after a lengthy effort to serve him legal papers.

Front Office Sports reported in February that O’Neal inked a $15 million deal to remain with TNT’s “Inside the NBA.”

O’Neal told CNBC in 2022 that, regarding FTX, he “was just a paid spokesperson for a commercial.”

O’Neal was named in a class action lawsuit alleging that FTX’s spokespeople “either controlled, promoted, assisted in [or] actively participated” in a plot to “aggressively market” the company.

In earlier interviews with CNBC Make It, O’Neal said he was actively avoiding cryptocurrency.

“I don’t understand it, so I will probably stay away from it until I get a full understanding of what it is,” he said at the time, adding: “From my experience, it is too good to be true.”
