A person who approached a White House security checkpoint and began firing at officers has died, according to federal officials.

The U.S. Secret Service said in a statement late Saturday that, according to a preliminary investigation, the person approached a checkpoint shortly after 6 p.m. ET “removed a weapon from his bag and began firing at posted officers.”

Officers returned fire and hit the suspect, who was transported to an area hospital, where he later died, according to the Secret Service.

A bystander was struck, but a law enforcement official said it wasn’t clear whether that person was struck by the suspect’s initial bullets or those fired subsequently by officers.

Secret Service said none of its officers were injured, and that President Donald Trump — who was at the White House at the time — was not “impacted.”

Journalists working at the White House on Saturday reported hearing a series of gunshots and were told to seek shelter inside the press briefing room.

On X, the Secret Service said it was “aware of reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW” — one block from the White House — and was “working to corroborate the information with personnel on the ground.” It said it will have an update shortly.

In a social media post, FBI Director Kash Patel said officers were responding to shots fired and said he would “update the public as we’re able.”

President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time.

Evidence of the shooting was visible on a sidewalk just outside the White House complex, where yellow crime scene tape snaked across the pavement and officers with the U.S. Secret Service placed dozens of orange evidence markers on the ground. Medical material, including what appeared to be purple surgical gloves and kits typically used by emergency medical personnel, were also seen.

In a post shared on X, ABC News senior White House correspondent Selina Wang shared dramatic video of the moment she said she heard what “sounded like dozens of gunshots” and ducked for cover. Writing that she had been performing a routine task that White House reporters do daily — filming themselves on a cellphone for a social media post — Wang’s video shows her speaking for a few seconds about Trump’s statements earlier Saturday about a potential Iran deal.

As the sounds of gunfire are heard in the background, Wang’s eyes grow wider, and she ducks down in the media tent, which is among those situated in a line along the White House driveway where broadcasters film their reports. On X, Wang’s video had been shared thousands of times as of Saturday evening, and viewed at least 3 million times.

The Metropolitan Police Department said on its X Account that the Secret Service was working the scene and cautioned people to avoid the area. The scene is near where a gunman ambushed two members of the West Virginia National Guard last November.

U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died from her wounds. Andrew Wolfe, then 24, was critically wounded. Rahmanullah Lakanwal has been charged in that incident.

The gunfire Saturday comes nearly a month after what law enforcement authorities said was an attempted assassination of the president on April 25 as he attended the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner at a Washington hotel. Cole Tomas Allen, of Torrance, California, recently pleaded not guilty to charges that he attempted to kill Trump and remains in federal custody.

Following that scare, Secret Service officers shot a suspect they said had fired at officers near the Washington Monument, also near the White House. Michael Marx, 45, of Midland, Texas, was charged in a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in connection with the May 4 shooting. A teenage bystander was wounded in that incident.

Polymarket removed a forum related to the rescue mission of U.S. military servicemembers amid political pressure, the latest sign of mounting scrutiny around prediction markets.

U.S. and Iranian military forces are searching for a missing American airman after its F-15E fighter jet was shot down over Iran on Friday. One crew member has been rescued, but another is not accounted for.

Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., decried the Polymarket page that allowed users to bet on which day the U.S. would confirm the rescue of the two airmen after an American F-15E fighter jet was shot down over Iran. The lawmaker called the page “DISGUSTING” in an X post.

“They could be your neighbor, a friend, a family member,” Moulton wrote on Friday. “And people are betting on whether or not they’ll be saved.”

In a response on X, Polymarket said: “We took this market down immediately as it does not meet our integrity standards.”

“It should not have been posted, and we are investigating how this slipped through our internal safeguards,” Polymarket wrote.

In a separate X post, Polymarket said it doesn’t “make money or charge any fees on any geopolitical markets.”

In an email to CNBC, Moulton said, “Polymarket didn’t take that market down because it violated their standards. They took it down because we called them out.”

Moulton also said that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission has the authority to regulate prediction market platforms, but it is doing nothing.

“That needs to change, too,” he said. “Yesterday, there were 219 active bets in Polymarket’s ‘war’ category. Today, there are 223. This is spreading, and Congress needs to act.”

Moulton last month banned his staff from using prediction market platforms like Polymarket or Kalshi, a policy that his office believes is the first of its kind in Congress.

“Constituents that we serve should trust us to make decisions based on the right thing for do for our nation, not based on how bets might turn out,” Moulton said Monday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

Moulton also said on X that Donald Trump Jr., the son of President Donald Trump, “is an investor in this dystopian death market and may have access to intelligence that isn’t public yet.”

Requests for comment from Trump Jr. weren’t immediately returned to CNBC.

The Massachusetts lawmaker is part of a growing chorus of voices in Washington calling for stronger oversight of these betting platforms as interest swells.

A group of congressional Democrats introduced legislation late last month that would bar prediction markets from allowing wagers on elections, war and government actions, in addition to sports.

In February, six Democratic senators urged the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to clarify that it will prohibit any contracts related to an individual’s death. These contracts “present dangerous national security risks,” the lawmakers wrote.

The CFTC on Thursday announced lawsuits against three states over what it saw as efforts to circumvent the organization’s sole regulatory authority over prediction markets.

The NFL has also asked prediction market operators to keep specific event contracts that the league deems “objectionable bets” off their platforms. The league outlined examples of event contracts that could be easily manipulated, inherently objectionable, related to officiating, and knowable in advance — and asked that operators refrain from offering such trades.

— CNBC’s Dan Mangan, Azhar Sukri and Luke Fountain contributed to this report.

Disclosure: CNBC and Kalshi have a commercial relationship that includes customer acquisition and a minority investment.

A combined service would have about 200 million subscribers given existing totals, Ellison said during his company’s investor call about the WBD transaction. Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery said last week they had struck an agreement to sell WBD for $31 per share after Netflix backed out of the prolonged bidding war.

Paramount executives didn’t offer any details Monday on how the company may price a combined service or what it would be called. Still, Ellison said he wouldn’t disrupt the HBO brand.

“HBO should stay HBO,” he said, citing its long history of quality programming.

HBO is likely to be a sub-brand within the larger service, according to a person familiar with Paramount’s plans. HBO is currently run by Casey Bloys, whose contract runs out in 2027, another person said. Bloys declined to comment.

Paramount also touted the strength of its sports offering on a combined service, bringing together TNT Sports with CBS Sports.

Paramount executives said they haven’t heard anything from regulators to signal that the breadth of their sports offerings — which would include March Madness, NFL, MLB, NHL, Nascar, French Open, The Masters, college football and more — would trigger any antitrust concerns.

The first flights out of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, were cleared to depart Monday after more than 11,000 were canceled in the Middle East since the the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday.

It’s a sign of how airlines are preparing to restart service to the region after mass cancellations, but local authorities gave airlines a green light only to resume a “limited number” of flights.

The first was Emirates flight EK500, which departed at 9:12 p.m. local time bound for Mumbai, India, according to Flightradar24, a flight tracking site. The flight was operated on an Airbus A380, the world’s biggest passenger plane.

Another, Flydubai flight to Warsaw, Poland, departed after 1 a.m. local time on Tuesday, Flightradar24 said. An Air Baltic plane left Dubai but the Latvia-based carrier said it was solely a repositioning flight, not carrying passengers.

Separately, Israeli airline El Al said Monday that it’s considering chartering private jets to bring stranded Israeli citizens home.

The announcements mark a potential improvement after air travel ground to a halt in a large swath of the Middle East over the weekend following the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory strikes.

The attacks shut airspace over a large part of the region, stranding hundreds of thousands of customers around the world, including those who weren’t flying to and from the area since aircraft couldn’t transit those zones. Dubai is one of the busiest air travel hubs in the world.

The airport authority that owns and manages airports in Dubai said a small number of flights would be permitted to operate from Dubai International and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International, but advised travelers to check with their airlines.

For its part, Emirates said it will start operating a “limited number of flights” Monday night and urged customers not to go to the airport unless notified by the airline.

“We are accommodating customers with earlier bookings as a priority,” it said in a post on X. “All other flights remain suspended until further notice,” it said.

El Al said it is considering hiring KlasJet planes to take passengers from European airports to Aqaba, over the southern border in Jordan, for customers of the airline. It previously considered flying in and out of Taba, Egypt, but later Monday said that plan was scrapped “due to the lack of approval from the security authorities in Israel.”

Etihad Airways based in Abu Dhabi, UAE, said Monday that all commercial flights to and from the city are suspended until afternoon local time on Wednesday, though it could operate some cargo and repatriation flights “subject to strict operational and safety protocols.”

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that Sri Lanka’s entire transport system must undergo a rapid transformation to create a more efficient, safe and technologically advanced transport system, thereby providing the public with a dignified and reliable service.

The President made these remarks during a meeting held this morning (12) at the Presidential Secretariat with officials from the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, according to the President’s Media Division (PMD).

During the meeting, the President was briefed on a strategic plan prepared by the Ministry under five key pillars: economic competitiveness, environmental sustainability, digital transformation, social equity and accessibility, and safety and security, aimed at revitalising the transport sector.

As a solution to the severe traffic congestion in Colombo, it was noted that the government plans to introduce the Lanka Metro Transit bus service, PMD said in the statement.

The required infrastructure is currently being developed, and the buses are expected to be brought to the country by August this year under this project.

The project is planned to be implemented as a pilot initiative along six main roads surrounding Colombo, with the programme initially starting from the Western Province and later extending to the Galle and Kandy districts. Over the next three years, the service is expected to extend to eight major cities.

The pilot project aims to reduce the number of private vehicles entering Colombo daily and encourage the public to shift towards public transport.

The President stressed that identifying dedicated bus priority lanes and maintaining their efficiency will be essential for the project’s success.

President Dissanayake also highlighted the need to replace the fragmented existing bus services with a system of transport companies operating under a cluster model to provide the public with quality services.

The President emphasised that “What individuals seek is the availability of quality transportation services; the manner in which these services are delivered is of minimal interest to them,” the statement said.

Noting that Sri Lanka’s cities developed over time rather than through systematic planning, the President said transport management within the existing urban framework must be handled carefully, and observed that implementing the bus cluster system represents the most effective solution to this challenge.

Under this system, a company would be established to deploy buses and the President indicated that, should any issues regarding profitability arise, the government would have the capacity to provide support to the company.

The President further stressed the importance of formal agreements between bus owners, companies and the government to ensure uninterrupted services, stating that this approach would be more practical than incurring high costs in purchasing new buses.

The President also underscored the importance of developing Multi-modal Transport Hubs (MTH) around the railway network to integrate various modes of transport.

Discussions were held on modernising the Kelani Valley Railway line and introducing an electronic system for the expressway network.

Special emphasis was also placed on the welfare of employees in the transport sector. The President noted that service conditions should be structured to ensure that employees receive due respect and that their future security is safeguarded.

In particular, he highlighted the importance of providing formal appointment letters and ensuring systematic welfare services, especially for workers in the private sector, the statement noted.

Attention was drawn to the existing situation regarding the on-site fine system and the demerit point mechanism. Although driving licenses have been issued with embedded chips for the past decade, no technological software system had been developed to implement a proper demerit point mechanism, rendering the system largely ineffective.

It was noted that the introduction of Gov.pay now provides the capability to rectify this system and a fully operational mechanism could be established within six to seven months.

A regulatory framework has been developed for three-wheeled vehicles, taxis and school vans, which is expected to be presented after consultations with all relevant stakeholders.

Attention was also drawn to issues arising with the ‘Sisu Sariya’ bus service. It was noted that the government allocated LKR 2,200 million for the programme in 2025, of which LKR 500 million remained unutilised. Discussions focused on ways to enhance the efficiency of the ‘Sisu Sariya’ programme and to expand it in a manner that delivers direct benefits to students.

The establishment of a National Centre for Transport Research and Development, bringing together all transport sector institutions under a single platform, was also discussed.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Bimal Rathnayake, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Prasanna Gunasena, Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Senior Professor Kapila Perera, senior officials of the Ministry and heads and senior officers from institutions under the Ministry, including the Sri Lanka Railways Department, the Department of Motor Traffic, the National Transport Commission and the Sri Lanka Transport Board.

The company needs to bring more of its satellites online so it can begin offering an internet-from-space service that was recently rebranded as Amazon Leo. The company has earmarked at least $10 billion to build the network.

Delays beyond Amazon’s control, including a “shortage in the near-term availability” of rockets, necessitate an extension, the company said in a filing made public on Friday. Amazon also pointed to manufacturing disruptions, the failure and grounding of new launch vehicles and limitations on spaceport capacity.

Leo is “producing satellites considerably faster than others can launch them,” the company wrote.

The company is now seeking a 24-month extension, to July 2028, or for the FCC to waive its deadline requiring Amazon to get roughly half of its 3,236 low Earth satellites up.

In 2019, Amazon unveiled its plans to build a constellation of low Earth satellites. They are designed to provide high-speed, low-latency internet to consumers, corporations and governments, offering connections through square-shaped terminals.

Amazon has booked more than 100 launches to deploy dozens of satellites at a time. The company said in the filing that it has bought 10 more launches with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, as well as a dozen additional rides with Blue Origin, the space exploration startup of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

The company said that many of its partners have notched significant launch milestones with their respective rockets in the past year.

“Not withstanding this progress, the development timelines for these next-generation vehicles have extended beyond initial projections, contributing to Amazon Leo’s deployment delays,” the company wrote.

Amazon has sent up more than 150 satellites since April. The company said it expects to deploy about 700 satellites by July 30, “moving from the third- to the second-largest satellite constellation in orbit.” Its next launch is slated for Feb. 12, when Amazon will fling another 32 satellite into space atop a rocket from Arianespace, a French company.

Leo’s primary rival is SpaceX’s Starlink, which has more than 9,000 satellites in orbit and roughly 9 million customers. Another challenger, OneWeb, is operated by France’s Eutelsat and has a constellation of more than 600 satellites.

In November, Amazon opened up an “enterprise preview” of Leo to select users ahead of a broader commercial launch.

Amazon said if the FCC were to deny it an extension, it would “undermine” the agency’s goals of expanding spectrum access and promoting “expeditious deployment.” The company also noted that the agency has previously granted similar extensions.

“Amazon Leo is engaged in full-scale deployment and stands on the doorstep of offering U.S. customers a competitive and innovative new service,” the company said. “An extension would enable this rapid and ongoing deployment to continue, while strict enforcement would interrupt or halt this effort.”

Jeff Bezos’ space venture Blue Origin announced Wednesday it plans to deploy 5,408 satellites into space for a communications network that will take on SpaceX and Amazon.

The network, called TeraWave, is targeted for enterprise, data center and government users.

The company said it will provide data speeds of “up to 6 terabits per second” from satellites positioned in low Earth orbit and medium Earth orbit, regions of space that are between 100 miles and 21,000 miles from the Earth’s surface.

Blue Origin said it expects to begin deploying its constellation in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Bezos is entering an increasingly crowded satellite internet market that’s currently dominated by Starlink, a service operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Starlink has more than 9,000 satellites in orbit and roughly 9 million customers.

Amazon, which Bezos founded in 1994, has also ramped up its own offering in the past year. The service recently rebranded from Project Kuiper to Leo.

The company has sent up 180 satellites since last April through a series of rocket launches handled by partners such as United Launch Alliance and SpaceX.

Several future deployments are expected to be handled by Blue Origin.

Amazon aims to build a constellation of 3,236 low Earth satellites that will serve businesses, governments and consumers. Last November, the company opened up an “enterprise preview” to select users ahead of a broader commercial launch.

Bezos predicted in 2024 that Blue Origin would one day be a bigger company than Amazon. He founded Blue Origin in 2000, and Dave Limp, Amazon’s former devices boss, serves as its CEO.

“I think it’s going to be the best business that I’ve ever been involved in, but it’s going to take a while,” Bezos said in a 2024 interview at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit.

Blue Origin is primarily a rocket launch company, flying tourists and research to the edge of space on short trips. Last January, the startup notched a major milestone when it successfully launched its towering New Glenn rocket for the first time, though it was unable to return the rocket’s booster back to a barge for reuse.

But the free service is gaining traction and finding its footing in conversations with the big players.

In November, Tubi made up 2.1% of total streaming minutes on The Gauge, Nielsen’s monthly analysis of viewing trends, ahead of NBCUniversal’s Peacock and Warner Bros.
“Our fans come in, and they behave like [subscription streaming] viewers. The only difference is they don’t pay for it,” said Tubi’s chief marketing officer, Nicole Parlapiano, in an interview.

Netflix’s dominance in streaming has led many media companies to chase the same success, spending billions of dollars on original content to attract subscribers and strive for profitability.

In response, the cost of streaming has risen, with nearly every subscription platform instituting multiple price hikes in recent years and pushing consumers toward cheaper, ad-supported options. A crackdown on password sharing by some of the biggest players has also shaken up the space.

“People used to cut the cord, now they’re canceling subscriptions. And is that driving more consumption into free streaming? Absolutely,” Tubi Chief Content Officer Adam Lewinson told CNBC.

Tubi said it has more than 100 million monthly active users and 1 billion hours of streamed content per month. For comparison, Netflix reported more than 300 million subscribers as of late 2024, the last time it reported the metric, while Disney+ reported 131 million subscribers as of the end of September.

Nearly 60% of Tubi’s audience is made up of millennials or members of Generation Z, and nearly half are multicultural, Tubi said, citing an MRI-Simmons Cord Evolution Study of its audience.

Tubi bulks up its library by licensing films and TV series — some popular and some niche. The platform does produce original content, albeit at a smaller scale than its competitors. It’s also tapped Fox’s sports arsenal, airing two NFL games this year on Tubi, most notably the Super Bowl in February and a Thanksgiving Day game last month.

In total, Tubi boasts more than 300,000 titles on its platform.

Fox’s answer to streaming

In October, Fox reported that Tubi had reached profitability for the first time for the fiscal quarter ended Sept. 30, with Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch adding that it reached that milestone “earlier than expected.” Tubi reported 27% revenue growth for the quarter, which was driven by an 18% increase in total view time.

Murdoch said at the time the hope was for Tubi to continue on its trajectory so it could become “a meaningful contributor” to earnings in the near term.

The growth is validation for Fox, which took a different tack to the streaming game than its media peers. Its stock is up more than 40% this year, while other media stocks haven’t fared nearly as well amid a sea of uncertainty.

In 2020, the media company acquired Tubi for $440 million.

Since then, Tubi had been Fox’s main answer to streaming until recently, when the company launched Fox One, a direct-to-consumer streaming service of all Fox content for $19.99 per month. Murdoch has emphasized there are no plans for Fox One to produce original or exclusive content, leaving Tubi to shine with a digital and cost-conscious audience.

Paige Bulera, a 23-year-old from Buffalo, New York, said she doesn’t believe in paying for disappointment. That’s why Tubi has emerged as the winner amid all of her streaming apps.

Bulera said she watches movies more often than the average person and uses her sister’s logins for nearly all of the major streaming services. But with each subsequent price increase, she’s finding less satisfaction with their investment.

“Not only are they going up in price, it seems like with each price increase you’re losing things,” Bulera told CNBC. “It’s like now you can’t share accounts with people on Netflix, or even if it goes up in price, there’s still going to be ads.”

Her slate of movies heavily leans toward horror. Tubi said the platform has the largest collection of horror content with 9,000 titles, while also offering fan favorites spanning genres like “Coraline,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Tom and Jerry.”

“With Tubi, it’s completely free – you know you’re getting ads, but it’s promoted in a way where you can watch old movies, new movies, or Tubi originals, so that’s why I’m a big fan of the platform, mainly because of the fact that it’s cost-effective,” Bulera said.

A recent report from MoffettNathanson notes that streaming engagement remains strong at YouTube, followed by free, ad-supported platforms — called FAST channels — like Tubi, Paramount Skydance’s Pluto, and Roku’s The Roku Channel.

Tubi executives say the platform often gets caught up in the same conversation as platforms like Pluto because it offers channels in a guide format that reflect the traditional linear model. However, since nearly all of its viewership is on demand – meaning viewers are selecting films and series from the library rather than tuning into a preprogrammed channel – Tubi argues it should swim in the same pool as subscription services like Netflix and Disney+.

“Ninety-five percent of people are coming in with the intent to watch what they want to watch, and they are leaned in. They’re not passive viewers,” said Tubi’s Parlapiano.

Executives say that selection process makes Tubi viewers more inclined to watch ads than those tuning into other free, ad-supported channels for more of a laid-back experience — or simply to have something on in the background. That’s a strong sales pitch for advertisers.

“We’re 100% ad-supported, which other streamers are not. Yes, they have ad-supported tiers, but it’s unclear on each platform how big those tiers are and how much viewing is happening in an ad-supported environment,” Parlapiano said.

On Fox’s most recent earnings call, CFO Steve Tomsic said the company’s overall TV advertising revenue was up 6%, primarily driven by Tubi’s growth.

With 58% of its viewers skewing young, Tubi has invested a lot of work into appealing to younger generations, according to company executives.

In June, Tubi launched Tubi for Creators, part of a broader push from the company into incorporating content creators into Hollywood.

“The idea behind it is to give creators a pathway to Hollywood that really allows them to maintain their authenticity that made them popular in the first place and maintain a lot of creative control,” said Rich Bloom, head of Tubi for Creators. “We launched with six creators and about 500 episodes of content, and we’re now up to well over 100 creators and over 10,000 episodes of content.”

Tubi has signed deals with well-known YouTube entertainers to add their existing episodes to the platform, such as Dan and Riya’s “Beverly Valley High” and FunnyMike’s series “Mr. Creepy Eyes.” It’s also been inking deals with independent filmmakers through Kickstarter-funded projects.

Bloom said Tubi has seen that the category is attracting new, younger audiences, and the “retention rate of those viewers is actually better than our general new viewers.”

Tubi’s Lewinson said the platform has been particularly successful with young adult movies, like “Sidelined” and “Sidelined 2,” starring TikTok star Noah Beck. The franchise has brought in nearly 20 million viewers alone, with the median age of new viewers watching the sequel just 21 years old, Lewinson added.

“We are really proving that we can bring young viewers to a long-form streaming platform,” he said. “There’s a perception that they’re only interested in short-form – completely not accurate. So long as you have relevant content for their fandom, they’ll come to Tubi.”

Gen Z is also leaning into nostalgia, with older shows like “Columbo” and “Murder, She Wrote” popular on Tubi, too.

Tubi executives note its growing Gen Z and millennial audience is another selling point for advertisers.

“My acquisition team can go out and acquire whatever we can possibly find, but we’re finding that as we produce these types of stories, we’re really bringing in those viewers,” Lewinson said. “They’ll come in to watch ‘Sidelined,’ but then we’re following their journey to see what else they’re watching on the platform, and we’re making sure that we have plenty of those types of categories for those viewers to watch.”
