Sajith urges govt. to secure fresh IMF deal before its too late

Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa has called on the government to take immediate steps to secure a fresh agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in order to safeguard the wellbeing of the general public.

In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Premadasa said Bangladesh is also seeking a more realistic IMF arrangement aimed at easing the burden on citizens amid current global economic conditions.

He stressed that Sri Lanka must similarly prioritise public welfare in its economic policy decisions.

Premadasa warned that economic policymaking should not become a delayed process where action is taken only after shortages worsen, prices rise further and households face increased hardship.

He added that the responsibility of leadership is to prevent suffering before it becomes unmanageable, urging the government to act promptly while there is still room to avoid deeper economic distress.

Sajith calls for Parliamentary Select Committee to probe US$2.5M treasury payment

The Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa has called for the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate the incident in which the Treasury allegedly transferred US$2.5 million to a third-party account.

The Opposition Leader emphasized that both the chairmanship and the majority representation of the committee should be held by the opposition.

Premadasa further alleged that the current government has not only been responsible for the loss of US$2.5 million but has also deliberately concealed the matter from Parliament, the Committee on Public Finance (COPF) and the general public.

He stated that the present government is attempting to shift the responsibility onto officials by initiating an internal departmental inquiry, which he characterized as a biased process.

Premadasa stressed the need for a transparent and independent investigation rather than one aimed at justifying predetermined conclusions.

The Opposition Leader reiterated that such an inquiry can only be effectively conducted through a Parliamentary Select Committee led by the opposition.

He further noted that withholding information regarding the disappearance of these funds from Parliament constitutes a serious breach.

Sajith, Dilith lead opposition protest to protect free education

Several opposition political parties staged a protest this evening (10) under the theme “Let’s Protect Free Education”, against the proposed education reforms and the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

The protest was held at Matugama in front of the statue of C.W.W. Kannangara, who is regarded as the father of free education in the country, Ada Derana reporter said.

During the protest, a public petition was signed calling for the resignation of the Education Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

Following the protest, Leader of the Opposition and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa, Sarvajana Balaya leader Dilith Jayaweera, along with other party leaders, paid floral tributes at the statue.
