A version of this article first appeared in CNBC’s Inside Wealth newsletter with Robert Frank, a weekly guide to the high-net-worth investor and consumer. Sign up to receive future editions, straight to your inbox. For investment firms of the ultra-wealthy, deal-making is heating up. In June, family offices made 60 direct investments in companies, ending three straight months of declining deal activity, according to data provided exclusively to CNBC by Fintrx. June’s tally is an improvement over the 47 deals recorded in May , though it marks a 40% drop on a year-over-year basis, per the private wealth platform. June saw a few buzzy deals in entertainment. The investment firm for Nintendo’s founding family bought a minority stake in indie film studio K2 Pictures for an undisclosed amount. Yamauchi No. 10 Family Office is also investing in the startup’s film production fund, a Hollywood-esque financing strategy that is rare in Japan. Stateside, Blackstone billionaire David Blitzer joined a $20 million fundraise for Ballers, a members club for sports including padel and virtual golf. A slew of professional athletes, including tennis Hall of Famer Andre Agassi, also participated in the round. But biotech and health care proved to be more popular themes, accounting for nine deals by heavy-hitter family offices. Narcan ingredient maker Antheia raised a $56 million Series C with investors including family offices Athos KG and S-Cubed Capital. Athos KG’s principals, billionaire twins Andreas and Thomas Strüngmann, made their fortune with generic drugmaker Hexal and invested in Covid vaccine maker BioNTech . S-Cubed Capital is helmed by billionaire and former Sequoia partner Mark Stevens. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s Hillspire has been an investor in Antheia since its $73 million Series B in 2021. Scientist-turned-entrepreneur Christina Smolke co-founded Antheia in 2015 after discovering how to bioengineer yeast to manufacture opioids for medical use in less than two weeks. Typically, the process of producing hydrocodone from opium poppies can take two years between farming, harvesting and extraction, Smolke said in an interview with CNBC. Smolke, a Stanford professor with a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, told Inside Wealth that family offices, which tend to invest with long investment horizons, are well suited for biotechnology investments. “These are complicated problems. There’s not a sort of a quick patch that we’re going to put on this,” she said. “Family offices tend to be able to be patient with their investments, and that aligns really well with the cycles and the timelines that are needed for biotech and to bring new products, new technology and new transformation, at a system level, to healthcare.” In late 2024, Antheia launched its first product, thebaine, a key ingredient in overdose reversal medication Narcan. The recent fundraise will allow Antheia to expand production from Europe to the U.S. and bring other products to market. The Menlo Park, California-based firm is developing 70-plus pharmaceutical ingredients necessary for medicines used to treat cancer, bacterial infections, seizures and other conditions. “The core aspect that’s shared through all of this is being able to rebuild these essential medicine supply chains so that drug shortages become a thing of the past and access, globally, becomes more equitable,” she said. For impact-driven family offices, biotechnology can serve as a familiar frontier, Smolke said. “It can speak to investors very directly,” she said. “I think everybody has actually directly experienced challenges with drug shortages — even in the U.S. — of going to the supermarket and having cold medicines out of stock or not being able to get certain antibiotics.”

Ethereum‘s price performances in the ongoing bull cycle may be lagging behind other notable crypto assets like Bitcoin, Solana, and XRP, which have formed new all-time highs. However, optimism about its price prospects still lingers as evidenced by a persistent accumulation of the digital asset

Confidence In Ethereum Growin Among Investors

Despite Ethereum’s price struggling to initiate a major rally, an encouraging sentiment has been spotted among investors. Recently, ETH investors have ramped up accumulation at a significant rate over the last two weeks.

Kyle Doops, a technical expert and host of Crypto Banter Show shared the development after examining the key Ethereum New Accumulation metric. Data from Kyle Doops reveals a surge in wallet activity, with both small and large-scale investors increasing their ETH holdings.

The expert stated that this trend reflects unwavering confidence from investors in spite of recent market fluctuations. Furthermore, the expanding interest suggests strong faith in ETH’s potential in the long term, which is attracting many institutional and retail participants.

Ethereum’s network expansion and dominance of the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT) sectors may have played a pivotal role in the persistent accumulation. Meanwhile, if the accumulation phase extends, it could act as a precursor for the altcoin’s next major price movement.

Investors’ interest in ETH continues to grow | Source: Kyle Doops on X

However, waning market performance threatens its uptrend in the short term. Even in the face of market uncertainty, Kyle Doops claims that Ethereum’s future appears increasingly promising, demonstrating his optimism about the asset’s capability.

This robust investor activity is also indicated by the Ethereum Estimated Leverage Ratio metric, which has been climbing for some period. A rise in this key metric indicates heightened risk as traders take on more positions with high leverage.

The surge in high-leverage positions appears to have been climbing as ETH consolidates between the $3,200 and $3,500 price range. Given the prolonged stasis within the price range, Kyle Doops believes that a bullish breakout is likely at this point.

However, he has urged investors to be cautious as high leverage may cause liquidations and volatility as seen in the past whereby the development has led to a volatile price action for the altcoin.

A Strong Rally For ETH On The Horizon?

ETH continues to face significant resistance at the $3,500, raising uncertainty about its next price direction. However, market expert and trader Milkybull has expressed his confidence in ETH’s prospects, predicting a move to unprecedented levels.

Examining ETH’s 1-month chart, the analyst claims that the infamous rise of ETH that will push it to the $12,000 milestone is gathering steam. His bold forecast is supported by a Rising Wedge pattern, which typically oversees notable price spikes.

At the time of writing, ETH was trading at $3,381, demonstrating an almost 5% rise in the last 24 hours. Investors are betting significantly on the renewed upward momentum as trading volume has increased by more than 60% in the past day.

Tough new European Union regulations requiring banks to bolster their cybersecurity systems officially come into effect Friday — but many of the bloc’s financial services firms aren’t yet in full compliance with the rules.

The EU’s Digital Operational Resilience Act, or DORA, requires both financial services firms and their technology suppliers to strengthen their IT systems to ensure the industry is resilient in the event of a cyberattack or any other forms of disruption. It entered into effect on Jan. 17.

The penalties for breaches of the new legislation can be substantial. Financial services firms that fall foul of the new rules can face fines of up to 2% of annual global revenue. Individual managers could also be held liable for breaches and face sanctions of as much as 1 million euros ($1 million).

So far, the rate of compliance among financial services firms with the new rules has been mixed, according to Harvey Jang, chief privacy officer and deputy general counsel at IT giant Cisco.

“I think we’ve seen a mixed bag,” Jang told CNBC in an interview. “Of course, the more mature-stage companies are further along looking at this for at least a year — if not longer.”

“We’re really trying to build this compliance program, but it’s so complex. I think that’s the challenge. We saw this too with GDPR and other broad legislation that is subject to interpretation — what does it actually mean to comply? It means different things to different people,” he said.

This lack of a common understanding of what qualifies as robust compliance with DORA has in turn led many institutions to ramp up security standards to the level that they’re actually surpassing the “baseline” of what’s expected of most firms, Jang added.

Are financial institutions ready?

Under DORA, financial firms will be required to undertake rigorous IT risk and incident management, classification and reporting, operational resilience testing, intelligence sharing on cyber threats and vulnerabilities, and measures to manage third-party risks.

Firms will be also be required to conduct assessments of “concentration risk” related to the outsourcing of critical or important operational functions to external companies.

A Censuswide survey of 200 U.K. chief information security officers commissioned by Orange Cyberdefense, the cybersecurity division of French telecoms firm Orange, showed that 43% of financial institutions in Britain aren’t yet in full compliance with DORA.

That’s a concern because, even though the U.K. falls outside the European Union now, DORA applies to all financial entities operating within EU jurisdictions — even if they’re based outside the bloc.

“Whilst it is clear that DORA has no legal reach in the U.K., entities based here and operating or providing services to entities in the EU will be subject to the regulation,” Richard Lindsay, principal advisory consultant at Orange Cyberdefense, told CNBC.

He added that the main challenge for many financial institutions when it comes to achieving DORA compliance has been managing their critical third-party IT providers.

“Financial institutions operate within a multi-layered and hugely complex digital ecosystem,” Lindsay said. “Tracking and ensuring that all parts of this system evidentially comply with the relevant elements of DORA will require a new mindset, solutions and resources.”

Banks are also adding higher levels of scrutiny in their contract negotiations with tech suppliers due to DORA’s strict requirements, Jang said.

The Cisco chief privacy officer told CNBC that he thinks there is alignment when it comes to the principles and the spirit of the law. However, he added, “any legislation is a product of compromise and so, as they get more prescriptive, then it becomes challenging.”

“The principles we agree with, but any legislation is a product of compromise, and so as as they get more prescriptive, then it becomes challenging.”

Still, despite the challenges, the broad expectation among experts is that it won’t be long until banks and other financial institutions achieve compliance.

“Banks in Europe already comply with significant regulations which cover the majority of the areas that fall under DORA,” Fabio Colombo, EMEA financial services security lead at Accenture, told CNBC.

“As a result, financial services institutions already have mature governance and compliance capabilities in place, with existing incident reporting processes and solid ICT risk frameworks.”

Risks for IT suppliers

IT providers can also be fined under DORA. The rules threaten levies of as much as 1% of average daily worldwide revenue for up to six months.

“These sanctions are necessary,” Brian Fox, chief technology officer of software supply chain management firm Sonatype, told CNBC. “They are a powerful motivator, pushing leaders to take compliance and operational resilience more seriously than ever.”

Orange Cyberdefense’s Lindsay said there’s a risk longer term that financial services firms end up moving their critical security functions and services in-house.

“Advances in technology may allow financial institutions to move services back in-house, simplifying this aspect and reducing the risk of non-compliance,” he said.

“Either way, existing contracts will need to be updated to ensure compliance is contractually mandated and monitored between entity and provider,” Lindsay added.

Meanwhile, there are several other cybersecurity-focused regulations that organizations will have to come to terms, such as the Network and Information Security Directive 2, or NIS 2, and the Cyber Resilient Act. The former entered into force in October.

“As with any new regulation, there will certainly be a transitionary period as organisations adjust to new requirements and standards,” Sonatype’s Fox told CNBC. “This is the start of a long journey toward improving software security and resilience.”

The price of Bitcoin (BTC) has dipped by 1.66% in the last day after failing to break past $102,000 on Friday. Currently, the crypto market leader seems to be in consolidation, with little indication of its next price movement. However, recent whale activity has pointed to a continuous bullish trajectory.

Bitcoin Whales Confident Of Future Rally With Rising Accumulation Levels

In a Quictake post on Saturday, CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost highlighted recent Bitcoin whale activity in regard to certain price levels.

The popular crypto expert stated that market whales i.e. investors with over 1,000 BTC, have now consistently increased their BTC accumulation whenever prices fell between $95,000-$99,000. Darkfost’s observation can be backed by recent data shared by fellow analyst Ali Martinez who reported that Bitcoin whales purchased 20,000 BTC, valued at over $2 billion, after the asset experienced a flash crash on Friday.

Interestingly, the CryptoQuant analyst states BTC whales have shown a similar accumulation pattern when the asset traded in a range of $55,000-$70,000 for over eight months before embarking on its most recent bull run in November.

Therefore, the increase in whale holdings at $95,000-$99,000 could convert this price range to a strong support zone that propels another price rally in the short to mid-term. According to data from CryptoQuant, Bitcoin whales’ holdings are now a little shy of 12 million BTC, which is a strong bullish signal that indicates growing interest and market confidence.

Parabolic Rise For BTC?

In other developments, crypto analyst Burak Kesmeci has predicted an incoming parabolic rise for Bitcoin that is tied to a certain condition. Using the Bitcoin Gold Ratio Multiplier (BGRM), Kesmeci was able to identify two important price points for the larger cryptocurrency. These are $100,000, which Bitcoin has already attained, and $125,000.

As the name implies, the BGRM is a trading tool that compares the price of gold to the price of Bitcoin. It is used to evaluate the relative performance of BTC as a store of value against gold and can identify significant levels of resistance and support.

According to Kesmeci, the BGRM highlights $125,000 as a critical price level and potential threshold for further bullish movements. By breaking past this price region described as the “2 potential bull high”, Bitcoin is likely to experience a parabolic price gain based on historical data.

At the time of writing, BTC now trades at $100,130 following a 0.50% gain in the past day. However, the daily trading volume of the asset is down by a staggering 56.67% and valued at $47.51 billion.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a seven-quarter high sequential revenue growth for the September quarter beating the average analyst estimates but disappointed on the margin and profit fronts. Also, the size of the new deal wins, though marginally better than the previous quarter, was far lower than the year-ago level. Employee attrition, too, seems to be inching up again. The country’s largest software exporter continued to report a cautious stance by clients.

On the positive side, the traction in new deals for the banks, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) vertical showed improvement and headcount increased year-on-year for the first time in five quarters. Given the seasonal weakness in the remaining two quarters of the current fiscal year, the overall growth and margin trajectory may show stress on a full year basis, which may weigh on the company’s stock price in the near term.

Revenue grew by 2.2% sequentially to $7,670 million in the second quarter of the fiscal year compared with the average 1.9% growth anticipated by analysts. In addition, revenue growth crossed 2% for the first time since the December 2022 quarter when it had grown by 2.9% sequentially. This also helped the incremental trailing 12-month (TTM) top line to cross $ 1,000 million and reach $ 1,113 million after dipping to $ 986 million in the previous quarter. In rupee terms, the top line grew by 2.6% to Rs 64,259 crore. However, profitability took a hit amid improved project ramp ups and higher subcontracting costs. The operating margin shrank by 60 basis points to 24.1% while net profit fell by 1.1% to Rs 11,909 crore. Analysts had anticipated 20-40 basis points improvement in the margin and 3.9% average profit growth. The total contract value (TCV) of new deals was $ 8.6 billion, marginally higher than $ 8.3 billion clocked in the previous quarter but much lower than $ 11.3 billion seen in the year-ago quarter. The TCV of new deals in the BFSI vertical was $ 2.9 billion compared with $ 2.7 billion in the previous quarter. The headcount increased by 3,739 year-on-year and 5,726 quarter-on-quarter to 6,12,724. The attrition rate rose by a tad to 12.3% from 12.1% in the prior quarter.

The stock has gained 8% in the past three months in the anticipation of a recovery in discretionary demand. It may show weakness in the short term given the company’s muted Q2 show and modest improvement in the TCV of new deals.

Ramp, the expense management company recently valued at $7.65 billion, is moving into business travel through a deal with Booking Holdings’ Priceline, as the growing number of corporate spend platforms look to retain and attract customers with additional services.

The new product, called Ramp Travel, utilizes AI and automation to help streamline and simplify the process of booking and doing expenses for business travel, with Priceline providing Ramp users access to airline, hotel, and other travel inventory.

Ramp CEO Eric Glyman said it has seen a significant uptick in businesses on the platform using cards and budget for travel, representing 20% of annual card spend, up from roughly 10% in 2021. That ultimately led Ramp to the Priceline partnership and new platform feature.

“One in nearly every 5 dollars spent on Ramp cards is related to flights, hotels, entertainment related to travel,” Glyman said. “This is a substantial way to just stitch it all together.”

Ramp said it now has more than 25,000 businesses using its platform.

Ramp, the two-time CNBC Disruptor 50 company (it ranked No. 32 in 2024), has attempted to set itself apart from the growing number of expense management software vendors by not only tracking spending, but also helping companies save money by flagging duplicated expenses, or through contract negotiations. Glyman said that same approach to controls will be applied to travel.

The companies see an opportunity to take share from corporate travel offerings that often rely on high fees that guarantee control over where employees stay, or the carriers which travelers fly with.

Priceline CEO Brett Keller described corporate travel as an “archaic business model” in which the bigger companies negotiate contacts directly with a select set of suppliers, which results in higher rates because of the customer support and service that is then used.

“The modern traveler is much smarter than that now, and they do most of the work themselves, so as a result, they should deserve access to much broader inventory and lower prices,” Keller said.

Travel is the latest feature that Ramp has added in the last year, also rolling out Ramp Intelligence, which generates insights for finance teams and proactively suggests savings opportunities, and Ramp Plus, a new suite of services for enterprise clients such as Shopify.

The spend management space has become crowded, with fellow Disruptors Brex and Navan, as well as Expensify, Mesh Payments, Airbase and Center competing for market share alongside traditional players like SAP’s Concur, making these new additions by Ramp critical to its growth and continued disruption.

Glyman said the push into travel and the other new offerings should help grow its client roster. While a majority of Ramp customers have never raised venture capital, the average size of companies using the platform has more than doubled in the past three years, he said.

“It does not just deepen [Ramp] but it also opens us up to new clients that we can serve today that we couldn’t before,” Glyman said.

As part of the deal, Synchron will get exclusive access to Acquandas’ layering technology for medical devices, and Synchron’s CEO Tom Oxley and CTO Riki Banerjee will join the manufacturer’s board.

Founded in 2012, Synchron has developed a brain-computer interface, or a BCI, called the Synchron Switch. The stent-like device is inserted through the patient’s blood vessels, and it allows people with limited physical mobility to operate technology like smart home devices and cursors with their mind.

During initial studies, Synchron has so far implanted six patients in the U.S. and four patients in Australia. The company will have to carry out additional trials that demonstrate the safety and efficacy of its device before regulators in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration grant approval for broader commercialization.

Oxley said Synchron has worked with Acquandas for years, but the official partnership will help the company continue to innovate around implantable neurotechnology and scale to address a “very large unmet need.”

“There are millions of people with paralysis who we think are in need of this technology, and we’re preparing to produce in high volumes,” Oxley told CNBC in an interview.

Synchron declined to share the specific size of Synchron’s stake in Acquandas or the exact number of devices it is producing.

As the company is working to ramp up its manufacturing, it is also hoping to gauge interest from more prospective patients. Synchron is planning to launch an official patient registry in mid-February that will allow patients with limb or motor impairment to stay updated about trials and share details about their needs.

“We wanted to create a mechanism where people could express interest, and it’s going to help us shape the consideration for which clinical sites across the US we focus in first,” Oxley said.

Although Synchron still has a long road ahead, the company has already caught the attention of powerful investors and competitors.

In 2022, Synchron announced a $75 million financing round that included funding from the investment firms of both Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who owns the BCI company Neuralink, asked a number of questions about Synchron during a meeting with Neuralink executives and engineers in July 2022, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Like many other BCI companies, Neuralink’s system is designed to be implanted directly into a patient’s brain tissue through open brain surgery. By inserting a BCI directly into the tissue, the quality of the neural signals should be strong, but the nature of the procedure makes it inherently riskier.

Musk announced that Neuralink implanted its device in a human for the first time on Sunday, and that the patient is “recovering well,” according to a post on X.

Synchron relies on a less-invasive approach for implanting its BCI that builds on existing endovascular techniques. The company’s stent, called the Stentrode, is fitted with tiny sensors and, after insertion, is delivered to the large vein that sits next to the motor cortex.

Since Synchron’s BCI isn’t inserted directly into the brain tissue, the quality of the brain signals is not as strong, according to the company. But the team believes the minimally invasive nature of the procedure will ultimately make it more accessible.

“We should be far exceeding the Stentrode,” Musk said at Neuralink’s July meeting, according to Bloomberg. “And they are currently kicking our a**.”

BEIJING — Hot competition in China’s electric car market is pushing local automakers to sell vehicles with fancy tech that Tesla doesn’t yet offer in the country — and sometimes at lower prices.

No longer are companies competing primarily on driving range. Instead, as they reveal new models at a rapid pace, they’re piling on a slew of features: in-car projectors, refrigerators and driver-assist, to name a few.

Tesla’s cars don’t come with those accessories, and Elon Musk’s automaker only offers a limited version of its driver-assist tech in China right now.

“Electric vehicles in China becomes a consumer electronics [product]. It’s similar to the cellphone industry,” said Li Yi, chairman and CEO of Appotronics, a Shenzhen-based laser display company that claims to work with major automakers.

“In China, I think it’s more entertain[ment], more gadgets, people really want to buy something with the most advanced tech specs,” he said, adding that in Europe, people focus more on functionality.

That’s just a peek at the swath of cars and the available bells-and-whistles in China. More than 100 new EV models are due to launch in 2024 in China, according to HSBC.

Consumers’ interest in new car models has focused on in-vehicle tech features and driver-assist capabilities — “far more advanced” than prior electric cars or traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, said Yiming Wang, analyst at China Renaissance Securities.

Price and maximizing mileage are two other top considerations for consumers, Wang said.

Appotronics’ Li expects that demand for car tech will help his new business segment generate “a few hundred million” yuan this year in revenue – the equivalent of about $40 million to $100 million, he said. The Shanghai-listed company previously made about $300 million in overall revenue a year, Li said.

When asked about Tesla, Li said he wasn’t authorized to disclose details but said people at the U.S. automaker “want something completely different than Chinese carmakers.”

He also noted that in Appotronics’ experience, Chinese customers are willing to pay a premium for car tech, while U.S. automakers are more focused on reducing costs.

That’s because electric car batteries and other parts aren’t made in the U.S., which means American companies are already paying a premium for core components of the electric car, Li said.

Chinese companies dominate the supply chain for electric car batteries.

In fact, the main reason why BYD has succeeded is because of its early work in batteries, where it can now reduce costs, pointed out Zhong Shi, an analyst with the China Automobile Dealers Association.

BYD surpassed Tesla by total car production in 2023, and sold more battery-only cars than the U.S. automaker did in the fourth quarter.

Traditional foreign auto giants like Volkswagen are struggle to adjust to the surge of electric cars in China, while domestic companies, including smartphone company Xiaomi and Geely-backed startup Zeekr, are rushing to release electric cars.

“I think the German system is coming from the mechanical, the bottom-up. [The] Chinese system is coming digital, top-down,” observed Omer Ganiyusufoglu, a member of German’s National Academy of Science and Engineering.

When designing a car, German engineers think about horsepower first, while Chinese engineers start with the cockpit design and then the interior, he said, citing a Chinese car engineer, when he spoke Monday at a Huawei event on “5G Advanced.”

China’s driver-assist push

Driver-assist has emerged in the last year as competitive feature for electric cars in China.

Tesla’s version for helping with driving on highways — called Autopilot — is available in the country, but the company’s “Full Self Driving” (FSD) feature for city streets is not.

Chinese regulators are gradually allowing passenger cars to use more driver-assist features in cities, such as for smooth braking at traffic lights. Chinese authorities in November also announced a nationwide push for developing driver-assist and self-driving technologies via pilot programs.

However, it remains unclear to what extent consumers are willing to pay for such features.

“Even though customers, specially those in China, always indicate in surveys that they are willing to pay for general safety and navigation [advanced driver assistance system] features, their answers change when they are asked about specific ADAS features and their buying behavior tells are different story,” said Shay Natarajan, a partner at Mobility Impact Partners, a private equity fund that invests in transportation.

“There are over 20 unique ADAS features,” she said, noting blind spot warnings or surround camera view were the most popular items. “Note that FSD is not on top of the list of ADAS features customers are willing to pay for.”

Microsoft shares were trading down as much as 5% on Wednesday, a day after the software maker issued worse-than-expected quarterly revenue guidance. Many analysts remained optimistic about the company’s prospects, but a few fretted about how recent investments in artificial intelligence won’t immediately come to fruition.

Growth in AI has the potential to propel Microsoft’s two largest businesses: the Azure public cloud and the more traditional, and market-leading, Office productivity software.

Microsoft has been increasing its capital expenditures to get infrastructure in place to provide AI services to developers at other companies and roll out assistant capabilities to apps such as Word and Outlook. The extra spending cuts into Microsoft’s cloud gross margin.

Last week, Microsoft said its Copilot assistant for these Microsoft 365 applications would cost $30 per person per month on top of regular subscription prices. The company did not say when it would start charging. On Tuesday’s call, Amy Hood, Microsoft’s finance chief, said growth from AI services would be “gradual” as Azure AI tools gain in popularity and Copilots such as the one for Microsoft 365 become generally available. She said that for the current 2024 fiscal year, which will end in June 2024, the impact would mainly come in the second half.

Some investors will probably have to change their expectations on revenue as a result of Hood’s comments, JPMorgan analysts led by Mark Murphy, with a buy rating on Microsoft stock, wrote in a Wednesday note.

“The messaging on Copilot was more about tempering rather than inflating expectations,” wrote UBS analysts led by Karl Keirstead, which also has a buy rating on Microsoft.

Members of the public became captivated by the ChatGPT chatbot from startup OpenAI, which relies on Azure, after its release in late 2022. It’s a prominent example of generative AI, which accepts human input such as text or an image and automatically creates content in response. Companies selling productivity software, including Atlassian, have been hurrying to incorporate such generative features into their products, and delays in Microsoft’s release of its all-important Office suite could mean missing out on a clear growth opportunity.

“Overall, while it will take some additional time for the revenue to materialize, we expect MSFT, with its increasingly unique set of AI-infused Cloud services, is well positioned take share across its numerous operating segments in the coming years,” Stifel analysts led by Brad Reback, with a buy rating on the stock, wrote in a note distributed to clients.

Raymond James’ Andrew Marok and Mauricio Munoz, with the equivalent of a buy rating on Microsoft shares, had a similar tone.

“While the contribution may not come as quickly as hoped as AI-enabled products are tested, deployed, and eventually used at scale, MSFT’s position as an AI leader remains unblemished by today’s report,” they wrote.

Even if the clear growth probably won’t show up in 2023, during the call with analysts on Tuesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that when it comes to new AI workloads in the cloud, Microsoft is in the lead.
