These price differences may be familiar to Uber and Lyft users who have compared fares with someone else. But the new report found the discrepancies can be dramatic.

Derek Kravitz, the lead author of the report, said that Uber and Lyft have access to a huge amount of customer data within the app and that this information could be used by the companies to predict what a customer might be willing to pay.

“We found that they have the capabilities to look at a lot of different things, namely how you interact with the app, how accurately or fast you type an address … whether or not you’re going to a daycare to pick up a child,” said Kravitz, who analyzed the ride-hailing apps’ privacy policies and patent filings.

Consumer Reports could not determine whether any of these specific factors were used to calculate fares, however.

Across the rides tested by Consumer Reports, the median gap between the lowest and highest quoted fare for the same trip was a whopping 50%.

The investigation recruited 174 volunteers who priced more than 40 routes on Uber and Lyft across 18 states.

In Kansas City, Missouri, 55 volunteers who checked one particular route generated 29 different prices. In Austin, Texas, the fares for another route ranged from $25 to $65, a 160% difference. Rides in the investigation were requested within minutes of one another, and in many cases within the same minute.

Consumer Reports said some of the routes ordered by volunteers in the study were from exactly the same pinpoint location, but others differed slightly.

Ride-hailing companies have long used dynamic pricing, also known as “surge pricing,” which calculates prices based on shifting market conditions such as rider demand, car availability and traffic conditions.

But the differences that Consumer Reports found among seemingly identical ride requests raise new questions about whether Uber and Lyft are using personalized pricing or “surveillance pricing.” These systems set a unique price for each individual customer based not only on market conditions, but also on that person’s user data.

Both Uber and Lyft have denied using surveillance pricing in the past. Reached for this story, an Uber spokesperson told NBC News that the company “does not personalize prices, period,” and that differences were “due to changing real-time marketplace conditions.”

The company called the Consumer Reports investigation “flawed,” saying prices can change second by second based on demand, driver availability, traffic and even slight differences in GPS location.

“We do not engage in surveillance pricing,” Sid Patil, Lyft’s executive vice president of rideshare, said in a statement to NBC News. “What riders see is driven by trip characteristics, real-time supply and demand, and any promotions clearly disclosed in the app.”

The question of whether ride-hailing companies use personal data to determine the maximum price a rider is willing to pay is not a new one.

In 2022, an academic study published in the University of Chicago’s Journal of Law and Economics found that Uber charged riders higher prices for trips to more expensive hotels. It also found, however, that “allowing ride-sharing companies to price discriminate improves travelers’ welfare, on average, by increasing their travel options.”

In March, the Republican-controlled House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform announced an investigation into whether Uber, Lyft and other companies were using surveillance pricing. Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., who chairs the committee, warned that pricing algorithms could “weaponize personal data and pad [companies’] profit margins at the expense of providing transparency to consumers.”

At the time, Uber said it did not engage in surveillance pricing, “including in the ways the letter describes,” according to the travel technology news site PhocusWire.

Many factors go into ride pricing, making it nearly impossible to know exactly what is driving any individual price.

Keith Chen, a professor of behavioral economics at UCLA and the former head of economic research at Uber, said ride prices on the app have moved toward “more complicated optimization” over time.

Pricing, he said, evolved from a taxi-like model based on time and mileage to more complex factors that include future car demand and randomized pricing tests to gauge what customers were willing to pay.

Chen, who is widely credited with having designed Uber’s surge pricing system, said that during his time at the company he did not see evidence that customer data was being used to determine base prices. But it did play a role in determining discounts.

Both Uber and Lyft have publicly acknowledged that user data can be used to determine discounts. Personalized promotions are a more widely used business practice, such as when a retailer offers a discount to a new customer or sends a coupon to someone who left items in an online shopping cart.

For riders who want to make sure they’re getting the lowest fare possible, experts recommend comparing prices across multiple ride-hailing apps before booking a ride. A recent National Bureau of Economic Research study found that only 1 in 6 riders check both Lyft and Uber, and prices differ by an average of 14%.

As SpaceX’s blockbuster stock market debut vaulted the company into the ranks of the world’s most valuable firms and made Elon Musk the world’s first trillionaire, Indian billionaire banker Uday Kotak posed a question: Are investors betting on the future of humanity, or are they witnessing a mega bubble in the making?

Reacting to SpaceX’s IPO and listing, the Kotak Mahindra Bank founder said the listing is “a true test for capitalism”, arguing that the company’s valuation cannot be explained through conventional frameworks. “The valuation does not fit any traditional matrix and is a huge bet on the future course of planet earth,” he said. “Only time will tell whether we, the human race, have arrived into the fairy tale world we grew up in as children, or are in a mega bubble,” he wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday.

While questioning how markets should value a company such as SpaceX, Kotak also praised both Musk and the United States for making such an outcome possible. “Either ways, kudos to the man who came as an immigrant, and to the country that has allowed such boundless creativity to flourish despite all the risks it embeds,” he wrote.

SpaceX debut

Kotak’s comments came after a stellar debut that instantly propelled Elon Musk’s rocket and satellite company into the ranks of the world’s most valuable firms.

After raising $75 billion in the biggest initial public offering ever, SpaceX began trading under the ticker SPCX at $150, an 11% premium to its IPO price of $135. The stock surged as high as $176.52 during the session before ending the day at $160.95, a gain of nearly 19% from the offer price.

That rally was enough to rocket SpaceX into seventh place among the world’s most valuable listed companies. With a market value of about $2.1 trillion at Friday’s close, SpaceX now sits just behind Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), which is valued at $2.9 trillion.

Live Events

Investor demand was evident throughout the session. More than 500 million shares changed hands on debut, a figure that approached Facebook’s first-day trading volume of about 580 million shares in 2012.

SpaceX share demand surges further

The momentum did not stop when the closing bell rang. SpaceX shares continued climbing in extended trading, rising close to 3.5% to $166.76 as of 6:30 p.m. ET.

Roughly 16 million shares changed hands in post-market activity, adding to the more than 500 million traded during regular hours. The after-hours advance lifted the company’s market capitalization by another $80 billion to around $2.2 trillion.

SpaceX lifts Elon Musk into trillionaire territory

The blockbuster debut also marked a watershed moment for Musk personally. The surge in SpaceX shares pushed his net worth to $1.11 trillion, making him the world’s first trillionaire.According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk’s fortune now exceeds the combined wealth of Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Jeff Bezos and Larry Ellison. Together, the four billionaires are worth $1.089 trillion, less than Musk’s estimated net worth of $1.11 trillion.
According to a CNBC report, Data from VandaTrack showed SpaceX was the most-bought stock by retail traders on a net basis during Friday’s session, while it was also among the most-discussed names on Reddit’s WallStreetBets forum ahead of the listing.

The letter to the heads of the Nasdaq, S&P Dow Jones Indices, FTSE Russell and Morningstar Indexes sent on Thursday asked the companies whether they had made or considered rule changes based on lobbying from Elon Musk, other SpaceX officials or officials from OpenAI or Anthropic, and asked for any communications between the companies and the indexes. CNBC is first to report the letter.

Warren also detailed changes, or proposed changes the indexes had considered, including fast-tracking newly listed stocks into top indexes.

“The changes to your index rules to accommodate these large companies, however, have the potential to destabilize markets and create significant risks for American investors, especially retirees and other individuals that rely on index funds for their savings.”

SpaceX is set to begin trading on Friday and is poised to be one of the largest public offerings in history, with the company valued around $1.8 trillion. OpenAI and Anthropic also confidentially filed for IPOs as well.

Spokespersons for the four companies didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Earlier this week, Warren called on the SEC to delay the SpaceX offering over concerns the agency had not done due diligence in protecting investors and market integrity.

Zito, co-president of the firm’s giant asset management division and its head of credit, spoke to clients of investment bank UBS last month in remarks first published by the Wall Street Journal. CNBC confirmed Zito’s comments.

“I literally think all the marks are wrong,” Zito told the clients. “I think private equity marks are wrong.”

For weeks, investors have punished the shares of public software companies on fears that the latest tools from Anthropic and OpenAI will make these companies obsolete. That has fed concerns that private credit lenders are sitting on stale valuations of their software loans, igniting a wave of redemptions as investors ask to withdraw funds from private credit vehicles.

Retail investors have pulled about $10 billion from private credit funds in the first quarter, according to analysis by the Financial Times. Amid the stampede, an array of industry leaders have sought to calm markets by explaining that the underlying companies are still performing well.

But sophisticated players including JPMorgan Chase are starting to act, reining in lending to private credit players by marking down the value of software loans.

While Wall Street figures including Jeffrey Gundlach and Mohamed El-Erian have flagged risks in private credit, Zito is among the first from within the industry to candidly acknowledge weakness in the market.

An Apollo spokesman declined to comment on Zito’s remarks. They come amid a tough backdrop for alternative asset managers, who’ve seen their shares battered this year. Zito and other Apollo executives have sought to draw a distinction between Apollo and other players in private credit.

Most of Apollo’s loans are to larger, more stable companies rated investment grade, and software makes up less than 2% of the firm’s total assets under management, Apollo told analysts last month. The firm has zero exposure to private equity stakes in software firms, it said.

‘Bad ending’

While Zito’s comments at the UBS event were about valuations in private equity, many of the companies bought by the industry also took out private credit loans. If the loans are in trouble, that means the equity is also in worse shape, he pointed out.

Zito singled out software companies taken private between 2018 and 2022 — a period of high valuations and low interest rates — as particularly exposed, warning that many were “lower quality” than larger public competitors.

Zito also said that private credit lenders, and by extension the investors backing the loans, could see deep losses in the coming years. That’s based on what he said could be the eventual recovery rates on loans to a generic small-to-medium sized software firm.

Lenders could recoup “somewhere between 20 and 40 cents” in those companies if they are “in the wrong place” in terms of the new AI-led regime, he said.

While lenders who focused heavily on the software sector are heading for trouble, in Zito’s view, the broad asset class will endure the current upheaval.

“If you do stupid things and you do concentrated things, and you do things that you’re not supposed to do in your vehicle,” Zito said, “you probably will have a bad ending.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with a handful of lawmakers in Washington, D.C. where Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., said he raised some “serious questions” about the company’s approach to warfare and its recent deal with the Department of Defense.

In an interview with CNBC’s Emily Wilkins, Kelly said the group talked “in detail” about surveillance and how artificial intelligence systems could be used within a kill chain. He called it a “good discussion.”

“There’s got to be guardrails in place, and we’ve got to make sure that we’re always thinking about the Constitution and making sure that we comply with it,” Kelly said.

OpenAI formed a deal with the DOD late last month just hours after rival Anthropic had been blacklisted by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who declared the company a “Supply-Chain Risk to National Security.”

Anthropic had been trying to renegotiate its contract with the DOD, but the talks stalled over a disagreement about how the technology could be used. The DOD wanted Anthropic to grant the military unfettered access to its models for all lawful purposes, while Anthropic sought assurance that its models would not be used for fully autonomous weapons or domestic mass surveillance.

Altman said in a post on X the day the deal fell apart that prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems, are two of the company’s “most important safety principles.” He said the DOD agreed and put them into the arrangement.

OpenAI published an excerpt of its contract with the DOD, which says that the agency “may use the AI System for all lawful purposes.” The company said it’s confident the DOD will not be able to use its AI systems for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons because of OpenAI’s safety stack, the contract language and existing laws.

“We think it’s very important to support the United States government and the democratic process,” Altman told CNBC on Thursday. He added that while OpenAI disagrees with the Pentagon’s decision to designate Anthropic a supply chain risk, he thinks the government needs to be able to make decisions about “how the most important things in the country are going to work.”

The clash between Anthropic and the DOD came as a shock to officials and technologists in Washington. Many had come to view Anthropic’s models as superior — they were the first to be deployed in the agency’s classified networks — and championed the company’s ability to integrate with existing defense contractors like Palantir.

Kelly is working with other senators to draft legislation that would set guardrails around DOD contracts with AI organizations, and said that Congress “needs to have a role.”

“We need to have legislation on this that creates some of these boundaries, guardrails,” he said. “This is the United States Congress, things don’t move as fast as we would like, but this technology is moving very quickly.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s decision to label Anthropic a “Supply-Chain Risk to National Security” on Friday resulted in more questions than answers.

“It’s all very puzzling,” Herbert Lin, a senior research scholar at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation, told CNBC in an interview.

Anthropic is the only American company ever to be publicly named a supply chain risk, as the designation has traditionally been used against foreign adversaries. But the company hasn’t received any official declaration beyond social media posts.

A formal designation will require defense vendors and contractors to certify that they don’t use Anthropic’s models in their work with the Pentagon.

The dispute centered around how Anthropic’s artificial intelligence models could be used by the military. The Department of Defense wanted Anthropic to grant the agency unfettered access to its Claude models across all lawful purposes, while Anthropic wanted assurance that its technology would not be tapped for fully autonomous weapons or domestic mass surveillance.

With no agreement reached by Friday’s deadline, President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to “immediately cease” all use of Anthropic’s technology, and said there would be a six-month phaseout period for agencies like the DOD.

Experts told CNBC the supply chain risk designation is highly unusual, especially since the U.S. and Israel began carrying out strikes in Iran just hours later. A group of retired defense officials, policy leaders and executives wrote to Congress on Thursday, defending Anthropic and calling the Trump administration’s designation a “dangerous precedent.”

Anthropic’s models are still being used to support U.S. military operations in Iran, even after the company was blacklisted, as CNBC previously reported.

Talks between Anthropic and the DOD are now reportedly back on, according to the Financial Times, but there are still big questions hanging over the issue as of Thursday.

Why is the U.S. government still using Claude?

Stanford’s Lin doesn’t understand why the DOD is still using Anthropic’s models in sensitive settings if they pose such a threat. If the Trump administration really sees Anthropic as a risk to national security, he said, it wouldn’t make sense to phase out the models over an extended period of time.

“OK, wait a minute, they’re a really dangerous player for U.S. national security, so you’re going to use them for another six months? Huh?” Lin said.

Michael Horowitz, a senior fellow for technology and innovation at the Council on Foreign Relations, said it’s “especially notable” that Anthropic’s models were used to support the U.S. military action in Iran. He said “there’s no clearer signal” of how much the Pentagon values the technology.

“Even in a situation where there is this intense feud between the company and the Pentagon, they are using their technology in the most important military operation that the United States is conducting,” he said.

Transitioning away from Anthropic toward a new vendor takes time and comes at a significant cost in terms of efficiency, said Jacquelyn Schneider, a Hargrove Hoover fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution.

Until recently, Anthropic was the only AI company approved to deploy its models across the agency’s classified networks. OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI received clearance, but their systems can’t be deployed or adopted overnight.

By designating Anthropic a supply chain risk, the DOD is suggesting that the company is “really bad” for U.S. national security, Lin said. But he stressed that the agency hasn’t clearly outlined what kind of threat the company poses.

“They don’t point to any technical failing, they don’t point to any hack,” Lin said. “They say things like ‘They’re arrogant,’ and ‘We don’t want you telling the DoD what to do in some hypothetical situation that hasn’t happened yet.'”

Lin said the other punishment that Hegseth was threatening to impose on Anthropic, invoking the Defense Production Act, also contradicts the idea that the company threatens national security.

The Defense Production Act allows the president to control domestic industries under emergency authority when it’s in the interest of national security. It could essentially compel Anthropic to let the Pentagon use its technology.

Horowitz said he thinks the clash between Anthropic and the DOD is “masquerading” as a policy dispute.

Months earlier, venture capitalist and White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks criticized the company for “running a sophisticated regulatory capture strategy based on fear-mongering,” after an essay published by an executive, and conservatives have repeatedly accused Anthropic of pushing “woke AI.”

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei took a different approach than other tech executives, avoiding getting cozy with the Trump administration in its early days.

“This feels to me like a dispute that is about politics and personalities,” Horowitz said.

Is an official designation on the way?

Anthropic hasn’t been designated a supply chain risk by any official measure, and there’s an open question as to if or when the company should expect one. Defense contractors have to decide whether they will follow Hegseth’s directive on social media or wait for more formal guidance.

Several executives told CNBC that their companies are moving away from Anthropic’s models, and a venture capitalist said a number of portfolio companies are switching “out of an abundance of caution.” But others, including C3 AI Chairman Tom Siebel, said he doesn’t see a “need to mitigate” the technology “until it gets litigated.”

Schneider said businesses are rational, and if they think it’s high risk to work with Anthropic, whether it’s formally declared a supply chain risk or not, they’re going to hedge and look for other partners.

“There’s all sorts of decisions that have been made within the Trump administration that, by law, require more codification,” Schneider said. “Even the example of moving from DoD to [Department of War]. That by law needs more codification, but all the contractors are using DoW.”

Even so, Samir Jain, vice president of policy at the Center for Democracy and Technology, said social media posts likely aren’t enough to actually cause a designation.

“There’s a process that the statute requires, including an actual finding that Anthropic presents national security risks if it’s part of the supply chain,” he said in an interview. “I don’t think, factually, that that predicate could possibly be met here.”

Anthropic said in a statement Friday that it will challenge “any supply chain risk designation in court.”

For Schneider, the war in Iran now looms large over the spat between Anthropic and the DOD. She said she’s left wondering whether the two conflicts were happening in parallel, or if they were somehow related.

“Obviously, you’re not going to walk away from technologies that are deeply embedded in your wartime processes right before you go to war,” Schneider said.

She said planning a military operation of that magnitude would have required “a lot of sleepless nights,” so she was surprised the DOD was willing to spend such a “remarkable amount of energy” on a public clash ahead of the initial attack.

What happens next?

As the war in Iran stretches into its sixth day, Anthropic’s path forward with the DOD remains a big mystery.

Horowitz said he would bet that the six-month off-boarding period will become a “a locus for some re-examination” within the Pentagon, especially since members of Congress and broader public markets have shown so much interest in the dispute.

Lin expressed a similar sentiment, and said he wouldn’t bet on Anthropic’s models being out of the DOD a year from now.

Schneider is less convinced.

“I wish I had a more definitive thought about where this is all going to go, but everything is so unprecedented,” she said. When it comes to historical examples or analogous cases, Schneider said: “I don’t have those. It’s just super limited.”

The DOD declined to comment. Anthropic didn’t provide a comment.

BEIJING — Uncertainty is growing over U.S. President Donald Trump’s high-stakes trip to China after Washington targeted a second foreign leader in two months.

Trump announced over the weekend that joint U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran killed its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In early January, the U.S. also captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife from their residence.

Analysts say those actions could complicate Trump’s high-stakes trip to Beijing.

“President Xi Jinping won’t feel easy about the death of the top leader of Iran,” said George Chen, partner at The Asia Group, noting Beijing’s relatively good relations with Tehran and Caracas.

“How can Xi feel everything is normal and alright and be prepared to welcome Trump to visit in [a] happy mood?” he said. Chen added that “investors should manage their expectations on what Trump can achieve for his China trip — if he still goes.”

Trump is scheduled to visit Beijing from March 31 to April 2, following a fragile trade truce with China reached in late October. It would mark the first trip by a sitting U.S. president since 2017.

But Beijing has yet to confirm the dates.

China’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday condemned Khamenei’s killing and called it “a grave violation of Iran’s sovereignty and security.” Beijing urged for an immediate ceasefire, although it was less direct about the U.S. role than it had been after Maduro’s capture.

“I worry the U.S. side might use Iran, if it’s going poorly, to delay the trip,” said a foreign business executive tracking meeting preparations very closely, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

“I think the risk [of the trip falling apart] is on the U.S. side more than the Chinese side,” the executive added.

U.S.-based prediction markets signaled a greater likelihood of a delayed Trump trip.

As of late Monday morning, Polymarket showed a sharp drop in expectations that Trump would visit China by March 31, to 42%, from 83.9% on Feb. 21, while wagers on a visit by April 30 remained high at 81%.

Kalshi showed a slight drop in expectations that Trump would visit China by 2027, though it remained a high 91%.

While many analysts still expect the trip to proceed, it’s less clear how U.S. businesses will navigate plans for deals in the world’s second-largest economy.

Several U.S. executives had been expected to accompany Trump on his Beijing trip, following a pattern of business delegations following leaders of different countries on their trips this year to China in a bid to strike deals.

“Prior to the attack on Iran, many American CEOs were already unwilling to go with Trump to China. Now the situation is even more tricky,” according to an active member of the American business community in China, who also requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

The White House and China’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment.

The Chinese readout so far indicates an “unusually softer tone,” said Jack Lee, analyst at China Macro Group. He expects Trump to visit Beijing as planned, but is watching whether Washington signals restraint on arms sales to Taiwan.

The democratically self-ruled island, claimed by Beijing, remains a central flashpoint in U.S-China relations.

Risks of prolonged conflict

Trump, meanwhile, told British newspaper the Daily Mail that U.S. strikes on Iran could last four weeks — a point that Chinese state media highlighted Monday morning. That timeframe would run into the planned March 31 start date for his trip to China.

“If the conflict escalates into a regional war beyond what the U.S. originally planned, it’s not impossible that Trump might delay the trip,” said Yue Su, principal economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit.

“Still, I expect Trump and [Xi] to have a phone conversation about this at some point,” she said. Her base case remains that Trump goes ahead with his China trip later this month.

China this week kicks off an annual parliamentary meeting, where top diplomat Wang Yi typically speaks to the press. In mid-February, Wang told U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference that the U.S. and China should work to expand areas of cooperation.

In foreign policy, Beijing has prioritized its own interests by forging bilateral ties while encouraging multilateral engagement. Official statements around past U.S.-China meetings have noted the need to create “conditions” for developing bilateral relations.

The U.S. actions in Iran have eroded trust between the two countries, said Dong Shaopeng, a senior researcher at Renmin University of China. While he still expects Trump and Xi to meet in a few weeks, he said he hopes the conflict does not spread to other countries in the Middle East.

State-affiliated Chinese columnist “Niutanqing” on Monday described the Iran “war” as more intense than the conflict in Ukraine, drawing several lessons. Of the several lessons from the turn of events, the columnist said that Khamenei’s death revealed “traitors” can emerge from within, and that negotiations may conceal the true intentions of an adversary, according to a CNBC translation of the post in Chinese.

If the Trump-Xi meeting proceeds as planned, it could offer an opportunity for broader peace talks while addressing strained U.S.-China relations.

“The issues that they have to work out, China-U.S. trade, are pretty important, and the meeting has been scheduled to be in place for a long time, and so cancelling it would be pretty radical at this point,” said Gary Dvorchak, managing director at Blueshirt Group.

“I don’t think it would … help the situation to cancel the meeting for any reason.”

BondBloxx ETFs has been making a big bet in private credit.

Even with Wall Street fears of an impending meltdown in the space, the firm’s co-founder and chief operating officer is confident private credit is a sensible way for investors to pursue income.

“What you’re seeing in the press… maybe a fund of one manager and one manager’s assets [are] being marked down, and that’s going to happen. There may be a concentration in that manager’s approach or in the loans and the companies that are in their fund,” Joanna Gallegos told CNBC’s “ETF Edge” this week.

Gallegos, who’s the former head of global ETF strategy at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, contends BondBloxx’s approach to private credit protects investors because it’s designed to give “immense diversification.”

“Because of the way it’s [BondBloxx Private Credit CLO ETF (PCMM)] structured, you’re getting exposure to almost over 7,000 of those loans,” she said. “It gives you a pure play to private credit because 80% of the exposure in that product is private credit. And I think there’s been a lot of discussion about other vehicles and ETFs that there may not be 100% private credit.”

The firm launched its BondBloxx Private Credit CLO ETF in December 2024 — promoting it as the first-ever ETF that offers investors direct exposure to private credit.

As of Wednesday’s market close, FactSet reports the fund is up 7% since its inception and up 2% over the past three months.

‘There’s good reason to look at private credit’

Gallegos finds the yield generated by private credit is still attractive.

“That’s a good reason to look at private credit. The reality is that more companies are private than they used to,” said Gallegos, who added that the fund spreads exposure across many loans and managers rather than relying on a single manager or a concentrated pool of credits.

In the same “ETF Edge” interview, Strategas Securities’ Todd Sohn said he didn’t see broad stress across credit markets right now, too.

“Credit spreads are still on multi-decades lows, whether it’s high yield or investment grade,” the firm’s senior ETF and technical strategist said.

However, a “credit event” is on his watch list.

“If any of this private credit in the illiquid space starts to leak into other areas of the financial system… that would be my kind of a glaring sign of risk I think that’s out there. Quite frankly, everything else so far seems all right,” Sohn said. “Banks are still okay. The consumer seems all right. But I think it would be some sort of credit then out of left field that leaks into other areas that we’re not maybe focused on.”

It’s no secret that getting a new job is hard, with candidates constantly complaining about the endless hoops that recruiters are making them jump through to prove they’re the perfect match, from endless rounds of interviews to 90-minute tests and presentations.

But for young people in particular, the challenge is even steeper. About a fifth of Gen Zers worldwide are classified as “NEETs” and are currently locked out of the job market. Last year in the U.K. alone, more than 1.2 million applications were submitted for fewer than 17,000 graduate roles.

Even Goldman economists have admitted Gen Z’s hiring nightmare is real—and it isn’t going away anytime soon.

As millions of Gen Zers face unemployment and entry-level office roles becoming scarcer, hiring managers are being forced to get creative to find the very best candidates. So Fortune has rounded up the curveball make-or-break interview questions now shaping hiring decisions.

Do you think we are in an AI bubble?

Do you think we’re in an AI bubble? Even the experts who’ve predicted past crashes can’t seem to agree. But if you’re looking for a job right now, your opinion on all this could decide whether you get the job. Dave McCann, IBM’s managing partner for EMEA, says he now throws the curveball question in interviews as a make-or-break test.

There’s no right or wrong answer, but actually knowing where you stand could give you an edge and pique the exec’s interest. McCann doesn’t care which side you pick—he cares whether you’ve thought it through.

Can you design a car for a deaf person?

Lyft CEO David Risher likes to ask candidates: “Design a car for a deaf person.” The curveball question may sound unusual, but for Risher, it’s a quick way to “suss out” whether a candidate can put themselves in the shoes of a customer—and he got the idea from his time working with Jeff Bezos.

“I want to see the candidate close their eyes and ears and imagine what that feels like, then be able to describe the experience to me in detail, including what someone in that position might need,” Risher said. “That’s how I know I’ve got someone who can build great customer-obsessed experiences.”

Do you have any questions for me?

The question that turns its head on the interviewee and enables them to put the hiring manager in the hot seat isn’t an unusual one. But for Twilio’s CEO Khozema Shipchandler, it’s what comes next that matters most.

If your answer is a blank stare or “Nope, I’m fine,” consider yourself on thin ice.

“The number one red flag for me is when someone doesn’t ask questions towards the end of an interview,” Shipchandler exclusively told Fortune. “That’s a pretty significant mark against them being curious about what they’re interviewing, the company, the way we might work together, chemistry, culture, all of those things.”

And Denny’s CEO Kelli Valade echoed that it doesn’t really matter what you ask employers at the end of the interview—the fact that you do ask something shows you did your homework, are seriously interested and is a big green flag.

Can you start right away?

Picture this: You’ve spent hours applying for the dream job and sitting through multiple interviews. Finally, you think you’ve won over the hiring manager when they ask, “when can you start?”

You’d be forgiven for thinking the right answer, is “straight away.” After all, you want to seem eager. But Gary Shapiro, the chief executive of U.S. trade association Consumer Technology Association, revealed that he turns candidates down who say they’re available within two weeks. “They don’t get the job, because they’ll treat us the way they treat that former employer.”

Other things to look out for: Coffee cup tests, pricey menu items and wait staff

It’s not just what you say in the interview that could cost you the job. Hiring managers are also watching what you do—as early as when you walk through the revolving doors and great reception. They’re looking at how you treat staff before and after your interview, as well as, what you do with the coffee (or tea) cup you were drinking from. Hint: offering to clean it up will go down will.

Other hiring managers take their prospective new hires out for a lunch interview and watch for whether they season their food before taking a bite. Why? Because putting salt (or anything) on your food before tasting it is the equivalent of judging a book by its cover and apparently, highlights a lack of patience.

That’s not all. They’re also testing you for how quickly you order, whether you wait for others to sit before sitting down to eat, the price of the items you order, and how you treat wait staff.

One consultant even revealed on X that he knows a CEO who goes as far as taking candidates for breakfast and secretly asking the servers to mess up their order “to see how they’d react.”

Ethereum is struggling to reclaim higher price levels as persistent resistance continues to cap upside momentum. After repeated failed recovery attempts, ETH remains locked in a fragile structure that reflects broader uncertainty across the crypto market. While analyst opinions remain divided on the near-term outlook, a growing majority are increasingly vocal about the risk of a broader bear market emerging in 2026, citing weakening momentum, deteriorating sentiment, and fading liquidity as key warning signs.

Against this uneasy backdrop, on-chain activity has drawn renewed attention. Data tracked by Arkham shows that a high-profile Bitcoin OG — known for correctly shorting the market during the sharp sell-off on October 10 — has made a significant move involving a substantial Ethereum position. The scale and timing of this activity have not gone unnoticed, particularly given the trader’s track record and influence on market sentiment.

The transaction has fueled speculation about intent. Some market participants interpret the move as a defensive repositioning amid rising downside risk, while others view it as a calculated adjustment ahead of heightened volatility. Regardless of interpretation, large transfers from well-known entities tend to carry signaling value, especially when they occur during periods of technical fragility.

As Ethereum remains pinned below key resistance levels, the market is now watching closely to see whether this on-chain development foreshadows renewed selling pressure or signals a more complex shift in positioning. With sentiment already strained, the coming sessions may prove pivotal for Ethereum’s medium-term direction.

Ethereum Whale Transfer Sparks Positioning Speculation

On-chain data shared by Lookonchain has flagged a significant move by the so-called Bitcoin OG, a trader known for managing a massive $717 million long exposure across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. The wallet associated with this entity has deposited 100,000 ETH, worth roughly $292 million, into Binance, immediately drawing attention from both investors and analysts.

Given the size of the transfer and the trader’s prior market influence, the transaction is widely viewed as a potential signal rather than a routine activity.

Bitcoin OG Ethereum Transfers | Source: Arkham

Several scenarios stand out as the most plausible explanations. The most straightforward is risk management. Moving ETH onto an exchange allows the holder to reduce exposure, either by selling spot ETH or by opening hedges through derivatives to protect an existing long portfolio amid heightened volatility. Another possibility is collateral management. Large traders often transfer assets to exchanges to support margin requirements or rebalance leverage, especially during periods of declining prices.

Less bearish interpretations also remain on the table. The deposit could be part of a short-term tactical trade, enabling rapid execution without signaling an intention to fully unwind the position. In some cases, large holders move assets between custodians or exchanges for operational reasons, though the timing makes this less likely.

Ultimately, the deposit does not confirm outright selling. However, it does suggest that the trader is actively managing risk. As Ethereum remains under technical pressure, markets will be watching closely to see whether this ETH transfer precedes further distribution or proves to be a temporary adjustment within a broader long-term strategy.

Price Holds Long-Term Support

Ethereum is trading near the $2,930 level on the weekly chart, consolidating after a sharp pullback from the $4,800–$5,000 highs set earlier in the cycle. While price remains well above long-term macro support, the recent structure reflects a clear loss of momentum. ETH has transitioned from a strong impulsive advance into a corrective phase, marked by lower highs and increasing selling pressure at key resistance zones.

Ethereum consolidates around a critical demand level | Source: ETHUSDT chart on TradingView

From a trend perspective, Ethereum is now hovering around its medium- and long-term moving averages. The loss of the faster weekly moving average signaled the start of the correction, while the price is currently testing the zone around the 200-week average, which has historically acted as a critical inflection point during major market transitions. This area is now functioning as a battleground between longer-term buyers and sellers defending prior gains.

Price behavior over recent weeks suggests indecision rather than capitulation. Large downside candles have been followed by smaller-bodied candles, indicating that aggressive selling has slowed, but buyers have yet to regain control. Volume supports this interpretation, with elevated activity during the initial sell-off and more muted participation during the consolidation.

Structurally, the $2,800–$3,000 range is pivotal. Holding this zone preserves Ethereum’s broader bullish market structure. A sustained breakdown below it would likely confirm a deeper corrective move, while stabilization could allow ETH to build a base before attempting to challenge higher resistance levels near $3,400 and $3,800.
