<p>Quantum computing shares popped on Thursday, as the U.S. government said it would award $2 billion in grants to nine firms operating in the space.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.nist.gov/news-events/news/2026/05/department-commerce-announces-letters-intent-9-companies-2-billion" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Institute of Standards and Technology</a> announced the signing of letters of intent in a release, saying it would take a minority, non-controlling stake in each company.</p>
<p>The Wall Street Journal first <a href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/u-s-to-award-quantum-computing-firms-2-billion-and-take-equity-stakes-7382e6be" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on the deals.</p>
<p>IBM is the biggest beneficiary of the package, with the U.S. Commerce Department agreeing to give the firm $1 billion.</p>
<p>Shares of <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3">IBM<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> gained 12% on Thursday.</p>
<p>The company is a frontrunner in the movement to build supercomputers using quantum technology, which developers say will be able to solve complex problems existing computers cannot tackle.</p>
<p>Chipmaker <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-4">GlobalFoundries<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> is receiving $375 million, while other grant recipients <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-5">D-Wave Quantum<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span>, <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-6">Rigetti Computing<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> and <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-7">Infleqtion<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> will be awarded $100 million. </p>
<p>Startup Diraq is set to receive a $38 million grant and PsiQuantum will get $100 million under the agreement.</p>
<p>Shares of D-Wave added 33%, Rigetti soared 30% and Infleqtion skyrocketed about 31%. </p>
<p>Other quantum firms that were not part of the announcement also climbed on the news, with <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-8">Arqit<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> booming 25%, while <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-9">IonQ<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> popped 12% and <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-10">Quantum Computing<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> added 19%.</p>

<p>The deals still have to be formally completed. Funding will come from the 2022 Chips and Science Act. </p>
<p>The Commerce Department did not respond to a request for comment.</p>
<p>Shortly after the WSJ published its report, IBM confirmed that it would work with the U.S. government to develop America&#8217;s first purpose-built quantum foundry, supported by the proposed $1 billion award. </p>
<p>The company said the initiative will &#8220;accelerate American quantum innovation and enable advanced quantum wafer production for a broad range of companies.&#8221;</p>
<p>IBM said the incentive from the Commerce Department will support the research and development efforts of a new IBM company called Anderon, to which IBM will contribute a $1 billion investment to match the government grant. </p>
<p>&#8220;Headquartered in Albany, New York as a standalone company, Anderon will operate as a state-of-the-art 300-millimeter quantum wafer foundry,&#8221; IBM said in a news release. &#8220;It will help the nation solidify its leadership at the center of a thriving new quantum industry that is estimated to generate up to $850 billion in economic value by 2040 and spur American economic growth while also bolstering national security.&#8221;</p>

<p>The rally comes on the heels of Nvidia&#8217;s <a href="https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-launches-ising-the-worlds-first-open-ai-models-to-accelerate-the-path-to-useful-quantum-computers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unveiling of Ising</a>, a new family of open-source models aimed at accelerating the adoption of quantum computing.</p>
<p>&#8220;AI is essential to making quantum computing practical,&#8221; Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement. &#8220;With Ising, AI becomes the control plane — the operating system of quantum machines — transforming fragile qubits to scalable and reliable quantum-GPU systems.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nvidia explained further in a <a href="https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-launches-ising-the-worlds-first-open-ai-models-to-accelerate-the-path-to-useful-quantum-computers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a> that Ising &#8220;provides high-performance, scalable AI tools for quantum error correction and calibration — two of the most critical challenges in building hybrid-quantum classical systems.&#8221; </p>
<p>The chip giant named Ising after a famous mathematical model.</p>
<p>Nvidia&#8217;s announcement aired on what&#8217;s become known as &#8220;<a href="https://worldquantumday.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">World Quantum Day</a>,&#8221; ever since an international group of scientists announced in 2021 that April 14th should be used to promote public awareness of quantum technology. </p>
<p>The date was chosen because 4.14 represents the first three digits of a key concept in quantum physics known as the Planck constant.</p>

<p>Tuesday also marked Nvidia&#8217;s longest winning streak since 2023, with shares up 18% over ten days.</p>
<p>Proponents tout quantum computing as a transformative technology that can accelerate drug discovery and solve problems impossible to answer on everyday computers.</p>
<p>The U.S. government and technology giants are investing heavily in advancing quantum computing. </p>

<p>But the market remains small, with the largest names accounting for around $31 billion in market value ahead of Thursday&#8217;s open. </p>
<p>The sector is also susceptible to wide swings due to its speculative nature, and many stocks have slumped year to date. D-Wave and Rigetti have dropped 18% and 12%, respectively. </p>
<p>IonQ also made news on Tuesday. The Maryland-based company <a href="https://www.ionq.com/news/ionq-achieves-key-photonic-interconnect-milestone-demonstrating-networked-quantum-systems-using-entanglement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> it linked two remote quantum computers, which it called a &#8220;foundational technical milestone.&#8221; Separately, the company <a href="https://www.ionq.com/news/ionq-selected-for-darpas-heterogeneous-architectures-for-quantum-harq-program" target="_blank" rel="noopener">landed a contract</a> with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.</p>

<p>Quantum technology firms are defying turbulent markets to go public this year, as companies seek to raise funds to capitalize on recent scientific breakthroughs and push the experimental tech closer to commercialization.</p>
<p>One such firm, <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-1">Xanadu Quantum<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span>, which builds quantum computing hardware and software, began trading on the Nasdaq and Toronto Stock Exchange on Friday, rallying 15% in the U.S. after a rocky start in public markets. </p>

<p>A SPAC is a shell company created specifically to raise capital through an initial public offering, and they have become a common route for quantum startups to list. </p>
<p>Xanadu&#8217;s listing came a week after Singapore-based quantum software company <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-5">Horizon Quantum<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> began trading following its merger with blank-check company dMY Squared Technology Group. </p>

<p>dMY Technology Group took <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-6">IonQ<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> public in 2021 through a merger with one of its shell companies, making it the first publicly traded, pure-play quantum computing company.</p>
<p>Since then, SPACs, which offer a quicker path to listing with less regulatory scrutiny, have become a popular path for quantum companies to raise capital. </p>
<p>Quantum computing uses the principles of quantum mechanics to process information in ways classical computers cannot, with potential applications spanning across drug discovery, materials science, cryptography and more. While technology remains experimental, it is widely seen as potentially transformative.</p>

<h2 class="ArticleBody-subtitle"><a id="headline0"/>Why now? </h2>
<div class="group">
<p>The recent wave of quantum listings comes at a tumultuous time for global markets, as conflict in the Middle East roils investor confidence, especially in risky, speculative assets like quantum companies. </p>
<p>Despite ending its first day higher, the Nasdaq-listed shares of <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-7">Xanadu<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span> fell over 10% in after-hours trading. Horizon Quantum, meanwhile, has dropped around 18% since its debut, while <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-8">Infleqtion<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span>, which debuted on the New York Stock Exchange in February through a blank-check deal on Feb. 17, has seen its stock plunge by more than 30%.</p>
<p>Still, companies appear willing to brave these volatile markets to capitalize on recent industry breakthroughs. </p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an interesting time to be entering the public markets, of course, with everything happening in the world &#8230; But for quantum computing, it&#8217;s actually a very ideal time to be coming out,&#8221; Dr. Joe Fitzsimons, the founder and CEO of Horizon Quantum, told CNBC. </p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re really starting to hit something of an inflection point,&#8221; he said, adding that there has been a significant number of breakthroughs that have occurred over the past 18 months. </p>

<p>In 2024 and 2025, several companies and research groups demonstrated improved quantum error correction, a key requirement for building reliable machines.</p>
<p>Other milestones include higher qubit counts — which increase the potential size and complexity of problems a quantum computer can represent and help solve  — and coherence times, which allow more reliable computations by reducing the impact of noise and errors.</p>
<p>&#8220;The first demonstrations of practical quantum advantage are expected at around 100 logical qubits — a threshold the industry is approaching by 2028-2029,&#8221; Velu Sinha, partner, Bain &amp; Company, told CNBC. </p>
<p>&#8220;But for commercially impactful applications like drug discovery or large-scale logistics optimization, you need 1,000 to 10,000 logical qubits, which is more likely mid-2030s,&#8221; he added.</p>
<p>This so-called &#8220;quantum advantage&#8221; refers to the theoretical milestone in which quantum computers solve real-world problems faster, more efficiently, or more accurately than the best-known classical supercomputer. </p>
</div>
<h2 class="ArticleBody-subtitle"><a id="headline1"/>A shifting narrative </h2>

<p>As companies race to pursue the quantum advantage, investments in the space have been rising. Tech giants including Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon and IBM have poured millions into the technology, though they have largely avoided spinning out standalone public entities. </p>
<p>&#8220;The narrative has shifted from science project to commercial trajectory, and companies are capitalizing on that window,&#8221; Sinha said. </p>
</div>

<p>&#8220;Quantum is one of a small number of technology categories investors view as structurally inevitable &#8230; The addressable market at full maturity is estimated at $100 to $250 billion, which gives patient capital a reason to look past near-term volatility,&#8221; he added. </p>
<p>Early commercial applications are also emerging in areas such as optimization, financial modeling and chemical simulations. </p>
<p>&#8220;The time was right [to go public] because quantum, and especially neutral atoms, is moving from scientific progress toward commercial relevance,&#8221; Matthew Kinsella, CEO of Infleqtion, told CNBC. </p>
<p>&#8220;Going public gives us the capital to accelerate commercialization and invest behind the markets where we already see customer demand &#8230; We think commercialization will happen in stages, with [quantum sensing and quantum timing] leading near term and computing expanding as performance continues to scale.&#8221;</p>

<p>For smaller quantum upstarts, near-term revenue opportunities are key to securing investor support for their long-term research. </p>
<p>Horizon Quantum Computing, for instance, has focused on developing software tools that can run on both classical and quantum systems, positioning the company to generate revenue before large-scale quantum hardware becomes viable. </p>
<p>The company&#8217;s CEO said newly raised funds will be used to expand its research team and roll out an early iteration of its software to early access users this year. </p>
<p>Xanadu Quantum has also invested in cloud-based platforms that allow developers to pay to experiment with quantum algorithms using existing hardware. </p>

<h2 class="ArticleBody-subtitle"><a id="headline2"/>From labs to the real world </h2>

<p>Historically, governments have played a critical role in developing the quantum sector, helping offset its heavy capital requirements and lack of immediate returns.  </p>
<p>The United States, China and the European Union have committed billions of dollars to quantum research and development, aiming to secure strategic advantages in computing and cybersecurity.</p>
</div>
<div class="group">
<p>Those government initiatives have often focused on or included support from universities and national laboratories.</p>
<p>However, the latest wave of public listings underscores how the industry is shifting from academic and public research toward commercial markets, even as timelines for widespread adoption remain uncertain.</p>
<p>&#8220;Quantum computers are going to be able to do trillions of computations instantaneously, and that will absolutely revolutionize the way we act with computing,&#8221; said Marc Einstein, research director at Counterpoint Research. </p>
<p>The day when individuals have quantum computers in their offices or homes may be decades away, Einstein said. But a future in which large organizations own the machinery and provide quantum computing services could arrive much sooner, he added.</p>

<p>Just over 10,000 Bitcoin — out of nearly 20 million in circulation — sits in wallets actually exposed to a quantum attack.</p>
<p>That number comes from CoinShares, a crypto asset management firm, which found in February that only 10,230 coins are both vulnerable to quantum computing and tied to wallet addresses with publicly visible cryptographic keys.</p>
<p>At current prices, that amounts to close to $730 million — a sum the firm described as resembling a routine trade, not a market crisis.</p>
<h2>A Steel Frame Takes Shape In Chicago</h2>
<p>The finding lands at an awkward moment. This week, PsiQuantum co-founder Peter Shadbolt posted a photo to X showing the <a href="https://ua.news/en/technologies/psiquantum-rozpochala-budivnitstvo-kvantovogo-kompiutera-na-1-milion-kubitiv" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Chicago construction site</a> where his company is building what it calls the world’s first commercially useful quantum computer.</p>
<p>In six days, workers had erected 500 tons of steel. The structure will house a machine capable of running 1 million <a href="https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/qubit" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">qubits</a> — a unit of quantum computing power.</p>
<p>Scientists say that capacity is, in theory, sufficient to crack the type of encryption protecting Bitcoin wallets.</p>

<p>PsiQuantum says the facility is designed to support fault-tolerant quantum computing and serve as infrastructure for next-generation AI systems.</p>
<p>For context, the largest <a href="https://scienceexchange.caltech.edu/topics/quantum-science-explained/quantum-computing-computers" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">quantum computer</a> currently operating at the California Institute of Technology runs on 6,100 qubits. A jump to 1 million represents a scale that has no precedent in the field.</p>
<h2>What Would Actually Be At Risk</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.pwc.com/us/en/industries/financial-services/fintech/bitcoin-blockchain-cryptocurrency.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Bitcoin’s encryption</a> relies on 256-bit cryptographic keys. A preprint paper published last month put the number of qubits needed to break 2048-bit keys at around 100,000 — suggesting that a 1 million-qubit machine could, mathematically, do the job.</p>
<p>But experts have long noted that raw qubit count is only part of the equation. Error rates and system stability matter just as much.</p>

<p>Not all Bitcoin wallets face equal exposure. Coins held in addresses that have never made a transaction — known as unspent transaction outputs, or UTXOs — are considered most at risk, particularly those whose public keys have been exposed on the blockchain. Many of those wallets date back to Bitcoin’s earliest days.</p>
<h3>Developers Are Already Working On A Fix</h3>
<p>Bitcoin developers have been debating how to respond. One option on the table is a hard fork — a fundamental change to the network’s code — to introduce post-quantum cryptography.</p>
<p>A co-author of BIP-360, a proposal aimed at making Bitcoin quantum-resistant, said that the upgrade could take as long as seven years to fully implement.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.psiquantum.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">PsiQuantum</a>, for its part, has said it has no intention of using its technology to attack Bitcoin. Co-founder Terry Rudolph made that point publicly at a Bitcoin quantum summit last July.</p>
<p>Experts in the field say a genuine quantum threat to Bitcoin is still at least a decade away.</p>
<p>For now, construction continues in Chicago — 500 tons of steel and counting.</p>

<h2>Signatures Face The Real Risk</h2>
<p>Reports say the bigger worry is signatures. “What we’re worried about in the next five years are signatures, and that goes over with Shor’s,” Hunter Beast, co-author of BIP 360, said during the ETH Denver gathering.</p>
<p>The math behind most wallets today relies on elliptic curves, and Peter Shor showed a way a <a href="https://www.internetsociety.org/resources/doc/2020/does-quantum-computing-put-our-digital-security-at-risk/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=958540440&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADqyrA8inYUSByIiDpmTwr8BAh9C5&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiA7-rMBhCFARIsAKnLKtANfyalhWBnP9-F3G_LZ4j71CGk_XJMNa41dowH5nieuiBB_ZiwaMMaAq0JEALw_wcB" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">quantum machine</a> could reverse that math.</p>
<p>That’s how a public key could reveal a private key once the right hardware exists. A blockchain security firm has been tracking addresses that have already exposed their public keys, and the numbers are not tiny.</p>
<p>Blockchain cybersecurity firm Project Eleven’s list flags millions of coins that, if an attacker had a big enough quantum device, would be at risk.</p>

<h3>How Close Are We?</h3>
<p>Estimates have been moving. Older papers put the needed resources in the many millions of <a href="https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/qubit" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">qubits</a>. More recent research from groups like Iceberg Quantum suggests the figure could be much lower, perhaps into the six-figure range.</p>
<p>Still, raw qubit counts tell only part of the story. What matters is how many “logical” qubits you can run with acceptable error rates, how long calculations take, and whether the machine can stay stable for that time.</p>
<p>Lab steps by big firms also matter; for example, Google has reported progress in error correction that many found encouraging. That doesn’t mean the break-in is imminent, but it does change risk models.</p>
<h3>Where The Industry Stands</h3>
<p>Reports note teams are forming to study and build defenses. The Ethereum Foundation has a post-quantum group, and major exchanges and firms are taking part in discussions.</p>

<h2>Quantum Risk Moves Beyond Keys</h2>
<p>Duong said about one-third of the <a href="https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/bitcoin" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Bitcoin</a> supply may be structurally exposed because their public keys are already visible on the blockchain. That figure is close to 33%, or about 6.51 million BTC, held in address types where public keys are revealed and could, in theory, be derived into private keys by a powerful enough quantum computer. Reports have highlighted that this exposure comes mostly from address reuse and older wallet formats.</p>

The warnings are about a possible future point often called “Q-day,” when a machine large and stable enough could run Shor’s and related algorithms at scale. Timelines vary widely among experts; some expect decades, others say the gap is shrinking faster than many predicted.</p>
<p>According to industry sources, coins that remain in addresses that have already allowed vulnerability of public keys are the most exposed if a well-architectured quantum machine is deployed. That makes best practices — like avoiding address reuse and moving old balances to fresh, quantum-resistant addresses once those are available — sensible steps. But there is no simple, one-click fix for the whole ecosystem, experts say.</p>

<p>Singapore-based software firm Horizon Quantum on Wednesday said it has become the first private company to run a quantum computer for commercial use in the city-state, marking a milestone ahead of its plans to list in the U.S.</p>
<p>The start-up, founded in 2018 by quantum researcher Joe Fitzsimons, said the machine, which costs around $2.3 million to assemble, is now fully operational. It integrates components from quantum computing suppliers, including Maybell Quantum, Quantum Machines and <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-1">Rigetti Computing<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span>.</p>
<p>According to Horizon Quantum, the new computer also makes it the first pure-play quantum software firm to own its own quantum computer — an integration it hopes will help advance the promising technology.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our focus is on helping developers to start harnessing quantum computers to do real-world work,&#8221; Fitzsimons, the CEO, told CNBC. &#8220;How do we take full advantage of these systems? How do we program them?&#8221; </p>
<p>Horizon Quantum builds the software tools and infrastructure needed to power applications for quantum computing systems. </p>
<p>&#8220;Although we&#8217;re very much focused on the software side, it&#8217;s really important to understand how the stack works down to the physical level &#8230; that&#8217;s the reason we have a test bed now,&#8221; Fitzsimons said. </p>

<p>Horizon Quantum hopes to use its new hardware to accelerate the development of real-world quantum applications across industries, from pharmaceuticals to finance.</p>
<p>Quantum systems aim to tackle problems too complex for traditional machines by leveraging principles of quantum mechanics.</p>
<p>For example, designing new drugs, which requires simulating molecular interactions, or running millions of scenarios to assess portfolio risk, can be slow and computationally costly for conventional machines. Quantum computing is expected to provide faster, more accurate models to tackle these problems. </p>

<p>Horizon Quantum&#8217;s announcement comes ahead of a merger with <span class="QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer" data-test="QuoteInBody" id="RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-10">dMY Squared Technology Group Inc.<span class="QuoteInBody-inlineButton"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer" id="-WatchlistDropdown" data-analytics-id="-WatchlistDropdown"><button class="AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton" aria-label="Add To Watchlist" data-testid="dropdown-btn"><span class="AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag"/></button></span></span></span>, a special purpose acquisition company. The deal, agreed upon in September, aims to take Horizon public on the Nasdaq under the ticker &#8220;HQ.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="https://www.horizonquantum.com/updates/news/horizon-quantum-to-go-public-through-definitive-business-combination-agreement-with-dmy-squared-technology-group" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The software firm said in September</a> that the transaction valued the company at around $503 million and was expected to close in the first quarter of 2026. </p>
<p>The launch of its quantum computer also helps cement Singapore&#8217;s <a href="https://www.nscc.sg/portfolio/item/the-singapore-quantum-ecosystem-new-collaboration-with-quantinuum/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ambition</a> to be a regional quantum computing hub. The city-state has invested heavily in the technology for years, setting up its first quantum research center <a href="https://nqo.sg/nqs/scientific-excellence/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in 2007</a>. </p>
<p>Before Horizon Quantum&#8217;s system came online, Singapore <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/tech/spore-to-set-up-first-quantum-computer-for-commercial-use-in-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> had one quantum computer, used primarily for research purposes. Meanwhile, U.S.-based firm Quantinuum plans to <a href="https://nqo.sg/article/singapores-national-quantum-office-and-quantinuum-forge-strategic-partnership-to-accelerate-quantum-computing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">deploy another commercial system in 2026</a>.</p>
<p>Singapore&#8217;s National Quantum Strategy, unveiled in May 2024, committed <a href="https://www.sginnovate.com/blog/guide-singapores-quantum-ecosystem" target="_blank" rel="noopener">300 million Singapore dollars over five years</a> to expand the sector, with a significant portion directed toward building local quantum computer processors.  </p>
