Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Ethereum’s current price structure is being compared to a phase that once played out in a major stock price, where years of sideways movement and repeated rejections eventually gave way to a powerful breakout above resistance. The comparison, shared by crypto analyst Crypto Tice on X, points out that what looks like long-term stagnation around $2,000 on Ethereum’s chart may be a setup that has appeared before in Netflix’s price history.

A Repeating Structure Inside A Range

Technical patterns have a way of resurfacing across different markets, which is why analysts often study past price behavior of one cryptocurrency to predict how another cryptocurrency could also play out in the future. In many cases, these comparisons stay within the crypto market itself or extend to traditional stores of value like precious metals, where similarities in cycles and investor behavior are easier to justify.

This analysis, however, takes a different approach by stepping outside those usual comparisons. It provides a comparison between Ethereum’s current price structure and the way Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) traded between 2003 and 2009.

The chart highlights a sequence of six distinct interactions with range boundaries in both assets. In Netflix’s case, the price spent years bouncing between support and resistance, forming a compressed structure with multiple failed breakout attempts. Each rejection added to the range but also built pressure over time.

Ethereum’s price action on a multi-year timeframe is showing a nearly identical formation. Since 2021, the Ethereum price has repeatedly pushed into resistance around $4,900, pulled back to support, and returned again for another attempt.

The current price action, which is the sixth interaction, places Ethereum near the lower boundary of the range, which is just the same stage Netflix was before its eventual breakout.

<img fetchpriority="high" data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-673541 aligncenter" src="https://bitcoinist.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Ethereum-Netflix.png?w=512&resize=512%2C241" alt="Ethereum Netflix" width="512" height="241" title="Ethereum To Follow Netflix’s Trajectory?
Price Chart Comparison. Source: @CryptoTice_ On X

Pressure Building. What Comes Next?

The structure outlined in the chart ultimately points to one outcome: a breakout rally. This is how Netflix broke out of the resistance trendline in 2009. The important thing for Ethereum now is reclaiming and holding above resistance above $4,900 with conviction. However, there are other intermediate price targets that Ethereum needs to break above before this move. These targets include $2,150, $2,350, $3,100, $3,900, and $4,600.

The analogy, however, is not without its critics. Some comments argue that comparing Ethereum to Netflix ignores the fundamental differences between the two. One comment, for instance, noted that Netflix’s consolidation took place during a period of steady business expansion, with clear growth in subscribers and revenue supporting its long-term trajectory.

Ethereum’s situation, on the other hand, is more layered and has a different economic regime. The rise of Layer 2 networks has moved activity away from the base layer, reducing fee generation at the protocol level. These factors, and many others, introduce unknowns that cannot be represented through chart structure.

While some of those people own WBD shares and may prefer the financials of Paramount’s $31-per-share bid to Netflix’s $27.75-per-share offer, CNBC spoke to 10 WBD employees in a variety of different roles at the company. All 10, who asked not to be named for fear of potential backlash, expressed concerns about potential job losses and questions of who would ultimately run their divisions if Paramount and WBD are eventually merged.

“It’s fair to say people are deflated by the news,” said one long-term WBD executive.

Nonetheless, a WBD-Paramount merger “is not a done deal,” as California Attorney General Rob Bonta said yesterday.

The transaction must gain regulatory approval both in the U.S. and in Europe. WBD CEO David Zaslav acknowledged at an all-hands meeting Friday that the deal may still be blocked and expressed sympathy for those experiencing a sense of whiplash going from Netflix to Paramount, according to people familiar with the matter.

“The deal may not close. If it doesn’t close, we get $7 billion, and we get back to work,” Zaslav said, according to leaked audio provided to Business Insider.

Still, several WBD employees told CNBC they wished Netflix had acquired WBD, citing several factors.

While Paramount and WBD both have core competencies in news, sports, theatrical film and streaming TV, Netflix has far less overlap. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos repeatedly said he planned to leave the WBD business alone, keeping its theatrical business separate from Netflix while also keeping HBO Max as a separate, independent streaming service for the foreseeable future.

Netflix also wasn’t acquiring WBD’s linear cable business with its bid. Employees at CNN, TNT Sports and the old Discovery networks would have remained in their jobs to forge a path as a standalone publicly traded company.

Now, WBD employees are staring at potentially massive job cuts. Paramount executives have previously stated they plan to cut $6 billion by eliminating “duplicative operations” on “back office, finance, corporate, legal, technology, infrastructure, et cetera,” according to Chief Strategy Officer Andy Gordon. Both WBD and Paramount have already gone through thousands of job cuts in recent years.

There are also questions about culture and leadership. While Mark Thompson currently runs CNN, Bari Weiss is the editor-in-chief at CBS News and could plausibly have CNN added to her purview.

The Wall Street Journal reported in December that Paramount CEO David Ellison promised President Donald Trump he’d make sweeping changes at CNN if he gained control of the network. Three CNN employees who spoke with CNBC said there’s rampant fear among their colleagues about Weiss making dramatic changes to the cable network’s anchors and tone.

“Despite all the speculation you’ve read during this process, I’d suggest that you don’t jump to conclusions about the future until we know more,” Thompson wrote in a memo to employees Thursday.

CNN media reporter Brian Stelter noted CNN “is a highly profitable business, and it would be foolish for any owner to put that at risk.”

On the entertainment side, WBD employees fear there may be too many proverbial cooks in the kitchen, which could bog down creativity and innovation for both film and TV.

One WBD executive noted that Paramount’s President Jeff Shell, Chair of Direct to Consumer Cindy Holland and Chair of TV George Cheeks are all used to being senior leaders in their organizations. Shell was CEO of NBCUniversal. Cheeks was co-CEO of Paramount before it merged with Skydance. Holland was a top executive at Netflix, where she worked for 18 years.

How that mix meshes with WBD’s entertainment leadership group is an open question and could lead to culture clashes.

TNT Sports is run by Luis Silberwasser and has largely steered WBD toward younger audiences with its programming decisions and investments, including Bleacher Report and House of Highlights. CBS Sports, meanwhile, is driven by the demographics of those who watch CBS and has historically catered to an older audience. This could lead to culture clash, or the divisions could mesh nicely as complementary assets.

While Silberwasser will have to work with CBS Sports President David Berson on employee duplications, like every other department, there’s some reason for optimism in the sports division, because WBD and CBS have worked together for many years producing March Madness, the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. That’s given the units some degree of familiarity with each other.

WBD also lost NBA rights last season. Combining with CBS’ robust portfolio of sports rights, including the NFL and the Masters, makes WBD a major player again in sports, even if it’s as a subsidiary of CBS.

One other repeated concern among employees is the $64 billion in debt coming as part of the $111 billion enterprise value for the deal. Several employees said servicing large debt loads has hindered WBD in recent years, and they feared this could lead to more of the same. Two employees noted there’s comfort being a part of a giant company like Netflix, with a market capitalization of more than $400 billion. Paramount Skydance’s market valuation is just $15 billion.

With Netflix as the victor, exhibitors are in a panic.

Unlike traditional movie studios, the streamer has not adhered to conventional theatrical distribution, and there are fears that big changes could be coming to an industry that is still struggling post-pandemic.

“It’s no secret that this was probably the least desired outcome for many theater owners,” said Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory. “There are no two ways around that. This may be one of the most meaningful days in the history of the business, but it could yet be a constructive one for cinema if Netflix honors early indications that it will maintain the theatrical business model of Warner Bros. properties and lean into those unique strengths which are not replicable on the streaming platform.”

Cinema United, the world’s largest exhibition trade association, came out strong Friday morning against the sale of WBD assets to Netflix.

“The proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. by Netflix poses an unprecedented threat to the global exhibition business,” CEO Michael O’Leary said in a statement. “The negative impact of this acquisition will impact theatres from the biggest circuits to one-screen independents in small towns in the United States and around the world.”

A half dozen movie theater operators who spoke to CNBC shared concerns that Netflix’s acquisition of WBD would lead to a significant decline in the number of films made available to cinemas annually and, therefore, hit annual box office ticket sales.

“Netflix’s stated business model does not support theatrical exhibition. In fact, it is the opposite,” O’Leary said.

Cinema United said the deal “would risk removing 25% of the annual domestic box office” putting smaller theater chains and independent cinemas, in particular, at risk.

“We are going to be pulling all of the levers we can because we think that a deal of this magnitude and the potential impact that it will have is something that everyone with regulatory and oversight authority needs to look closely at,” O’Leary said on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” Friday. “So, we’ve already been talking to people at the federal level, at the state level and internationally because this is a significant, significant threat, we believe, to the long-term viability of the theatrical exhibition.”

And Cinema United isn’t the only group worried about the future of the industry if the Netflix deal is approved.

A collective of top industry players sent an open letter to Congress detailing the potential economic and institutional blowback that could play out if the merger goes through.

The letter, reported by Variety, stated that Netflix would “effectively hold a noose around the theatrical marketplace” and could alter the footprint of theatrical movies and decrease licensing fees paid in post-theatrical windows.

An uncertain future

Several exhibitors told CNBC that they fear a deal between WBD and Netflix will result in fewer theatrical releases and even shorter theatrical windows for would-be major releases.

Consolidation in the studio space has been a growing issue for the theatrical industry in recent years. When studios merge, they typically decrease the number of films they produce, something the industry saw firsthand when Disney bought 20th Century Fox back in 2019.

The theatrical business has struggled in recent years from pandemic related production shutdowns as well as dual labor strikes that halted film shoots and delayed movie releases. The industry still has not returned to pre-pandemic release numbers or box office ticket sales, and there are worries that it never will.

“If you look historically, when legacy studios are absorbed by other entities, even in the case where those other entities are also legacy studios, the amount of movies produced for theatrical distribution goes down,” O’Leary told CNBC Friday.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said during an investor call Friday morning following the deal announcement that planned Warner Bros. releases “will continue to go to the theaters through Warner Bros.”

Sarandos doesn’t plan to alter WBD’s current business practices, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations. Still, he does plan to meet with theater owners in an effort to assuage any concerns and to explain his vision that movies should have shorter exclusive theatrical windows, the person said.

For exhibitors, shrinking theatrical windows pose a major threat.

Prior to the pandemic, movies typically played in theaters for between 70 and 90 days before entering the home market. Following Covid shutdowns, studios and cinemas renegotiated these terms, and the average window fell to 30 to 45 days.

Netflix, however, has never followed these guidelines. The company has long held that its content is meant for its streaming subscribers and therefore should be delivered to them at home, on the service as soon as possible.

If Netflix does release a film in cinemas, it’s usually only for the minimum requirement to be eligible for awards contention or for weekend stints as one-off events.

When Netflix does go to theaters, it doesn’t report box office figures publicly. That’s left industry analysts wondering if the company will continue WBD’s transparency when it comes to ticket sales once the deal is finalized.

“We’ve released about 30 films into theaters this year, so it’s not like we have this opposition to movies in the theaters,” Sarandos said during Friday’s investor call. “My pushback has been mostly in the fact of the long exclusive windows, which we don’t really think are that consumer friendly.”

“Netflix movies will take the same strides they have, which is some of them do have a short run in the theater beforehand, but our primary goal is to bring first-run movies to our members, because that’s what they’re looking for,” he said.

Of course, that strategy could shift in the coming years.

Alicia Reese, an analyst at Wedbush, highlighted in a research note Friday that the theatrical slate has already been negotiated through 2029.

“So any buyer would have to honor those contracts by showing the slated WBD films in theaters for at least the next four years,” Reese wrote.

One theater chain operator, speaking on the condition of anonymity to share candid thoughts, told CNBC, “All exhibition can do is take Netflix at their word.”

“In the deal they have pledged to continue to release legacy WB titles to theatres,” the operator said. “Now does that mean with a one-week window, a four-week window or no window? Netflix will have to diametrically alter their corporate philosophy of streaming first. We just have to wait to see. It’s not great for exhibition.”

— CNBC’s Alex Sherman and Stephen Desaulniers contributed to this report.

Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of Fandango and NBCUniversal, which owns CNBC. Versant would become the new parent company of Fandango and CNBC upon Comcast’s planned spinoff of Versant.

Netflix Inc.’s foray into live sports streaming with the boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul drew a massive global audience that peaked at 65 million viewers but resulted in thousands of complaints from viewers about connection problems and frozen screens.

“We crashed the site,” said Paul, 27, after claiming victory over the 58-year-old Tyson. “This is the biggest event.”

In an internal company memo seen by Bloomberg News, Chief Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone said the bout drew a maximum of 65 million viewers at any one time, rivaling some of the most-watched sporting events.

Some of those viewers took to social media to vent their frustration over glitches in streaming the highly-anticipated showdown. More than 100,000 users reported network issues on the Downdetector website throughout the livestreaming, commenting on slow buffering and network issues. Even boxer Evander Holyfield was struggling to hear the host of the show when he was asked about his infamous fight with Tyson.

Netflix declined to comment on the overall outcome of the event.

The company’s biggest live-streaming event is part of its ambition to boost its fledgling advertising business. Netflix has been investing in its live-event capabilities for mega spectacles like the boxing match after earlier livestreaming missteps such as the Love Is Blind reunion debacle. The platform ran a teaser for upcoming NFL games on Christmas Day during Friday’s bout.

The match between former heavyweight champion Tyson and Youtuber-turned-boxer Paul at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, failed to live up to the hype, with critics calling it a lackluster bout. The judges unanimously decided that Paul won the fight after eight rounds without a knockout.

Tyson came out of retirement to face Paul, with the match expected to be a key driver of subscriptions for Netflix. There is a potential for 10 million gains overall in the fourth quarter, 11% ahead of consensus, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.

Before the match, users on social media site X complained they were unable to stream the event, with one thanking Netflix sarcastically for “bringing us back to the glorious days of dial-up internet.”

“Seriously? You didn’t make sure you wouldn’t have server issues?” a user named TheYounger posted in response to a post by Netflix advertising the fight.
