Delta Air Lines suspended its airport escorts and red coat services for members of Congress and their staff because of the ongoing partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, the air carrier said Tuesday.

The move comes a week after Delta CEO Ed Bastian blasted Congress during an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box” for failing to authorize pay for Transportation Security Administration agents during the shutdown of the agency that includes TSA.

“Due to the impact on resources from the longstanding government shutdown, Delta will temporarily suspend specialty services to members of Congress flying Delta,” Delta said in a statement to CNBC.

“Next to safety, Delta’s No. 1 priority is taking care of our people and customers, which has become increasingly difficult in the current environment,” the airline said.

Delta’s Capital Desk, which is a reservation line for members of Congress and staffers, remains open.

But for now, those customers will be treated like any other passengers based on their respective Sky Miles status.

The move comes as airports around the U.S., including major hubs in cities such as Atlanta, where Delta is based, are seeing extra-long security lines as a result of elevated absences by TSA agents, who are set to miss their second full paycheck this week.

Bastian last week fumed to CNBC that it is “inexcusable that our security agents, our frontline agents, that are essential to what we do, are not being paid. And it’s ridiculous to see them being used as political chips.

“So, we’re outraged,” Bastian said.

“And if there’s a call to action here — and I think over 90% of the American public supports those people getting paid — ask our folks right here in Washington to do their job, get our people paid. They can do it,” the CEO said.

United Airlines, when asked by CNBC if it had suspended its similar perks for members of Congress, said, “We don’t have any changes to announce today.”

CNBC has requested comment from American Airlines about its services for federal lawmakers.

Airline executives have railed against lawmakers in recent months, urging them to ensure that essential government workers like TSA officers are paid during shutdowns, which have become increasingly common.

Repeated funding impasses, including in early 2019 and as recently as last fall, ended shortly after absences of government workers who were required to work without pay increased.

On Costco’s last earnings call, executives were grilled about a problem few companies have: how is the company managing crowded stores and jammed-up parking lots?

That dilemma is a sign of the times for membership-based warehouse clubs. More Americans have literally joined the club — fueling growth for Costco, Walmart-owned Sam’s Club and BJ’s.

All three retailers are opening more locations across the country. Shares of the companies have shot up in the past five years, with Costco’s stock up about 215% and BJ’s up about 305% since the day the Covid pandemic began in March 2020. And Gen Z and millennial shoppers have helped fuel the club channel’s gains, as trendier brands and more convenient digital offerings attract younger shoppers.

High inflation “brought the club channel more and more into focus,” said Bobby Griffin, a consumer analyst at equity research firm Raymond James. The clubs have long been known as a place to buy cheaper gas or bulk packs of household staples for less.

Yet the companies have continued to “up the ante,” he said. Merchandise has gotten sharper, private label offerings have become stronger and the shopping experience has gotten more enjoyable as the retailers have spruced up stores and added more technology, he said.

Clubs have benefitted from an element of surprise, too. Along with selling bulk packs of paper towels and Keurig coffee pods, clubs have caught the attention of shoppers with items that tap into a desire for dupes or go viral on social media — such as Costco’s gold bars, which racked up more than $100 million in sales in a single quarter.

Along with the breakaway hit of gold bars, the many card-carrying members of Costco prompted an unusual message from the U.S. Transportation Security Administration this year. As the government agency phased in stricter requirements for ID cards, it announced across its social media accounts in June that Costco’s membership cards don’t count as a Real ID.

And Costco’s loyal fan following helped it to post strong sales — and attract support — despite some backlash for sticking by its diversity, equity and inclusion policies.

As they pick up newer and younger members, the warehouse clubs see more room for growth.

Sam’s Club earlier this year announced plans to open 15 clubs per year going forward, along with renovating its approximately 600 current clubs. It’s expanding its footprint again after shutting 63 locations across the country in 2018.

BJ’s plans to open 25 to 30 new clubs over the next two fiscal years. The smallest club player, which has historically had more locations on the East Coast, has broken into new markets like Texas by opening four locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

And Costco has stuck with an aggressive expansion plan of opening about 30 clubs per year, with just over half of those in the U.S. and the rest in other parts of the globe, CFO Gary Millerchip told CNBC. In early August, Costco opened four clubs in three different countries: Quebec, Canada; North Guadalajara, Mexico; The Villages in Florida and Richland, Washington.

Costco is opening some of its new locations this year in existing markets where its clubs are crowded, Millerchip said.

Club retailers still face pressure, though, including an uncertain job market and tariffs. The companies have laid out strategies to reduce their hit from the duties: Costco leaders, for example, said on an earnings call that they diverted imported merchandise with high tariffs to their warehouse clubs in other parts of the world instead of the U.S.

Clubs’ rotating brands and treasure hunt approach could reduce their vulnerability to tariffs. While the retailers sell imported merchandise like furniture and clothing, the bulk of sales come from groceries, and the retailers could swap out or drop an item hit by high tariffs, Griffin said.

BJ’s will carry more holiday items this year from the U.S. or countries with lower tariff exposure, said Bill Werner, BJ’s executive vice president of strategy and development.

As retailers digest the long-term effects of tariffs, Costco will give the latest read on its business, and the club channel, when it reports earnings on Thursday.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Monday said he is “retiring” all 17 members of a crucial government panel of vaccine advisors, a shocking step that could help to sow doubts about immunizations in the U.S.

“A clean sweep is needed to re-establish public confidence in vaccine science,” Kennedy said in an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal on Monday.

Kennedy is removing all members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP, which advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The group reviews vaccine data and makes recommendations that determine who is eligible for shots and whether insurers should cover them, among other efforts.

ACIP members are independent medical and public experts who make recommendations based on rigorous scientific review and evidence. The CDC director has to sign off on those recommendations for them to become official policy.

It is unclear who Kennedy will appoint to the new group. In a release, HHS said ACIP will still hold a planned meeting from June 25 to 27 to make recommendations. A person familiar with the matter told CNBC that new members will run that meeting.

The advisor overhaul is the latest move by Kennedy – a prominent vaccine skeptic – to change and potentially undermine vaccinations in the U.S. since he took the helm at HHS. Under Kennedy, HHS stopped recommending routine Covid-19 vaccines for healthy children and healthy pregnant women and canceled programs intended to discover new vaccines to prevent future pandemics, among other changes.

Kennedy said Monday HHS will put “the restoration of public trust above any pro- or antivaccine agenda.”

Kennedy added some of the members on the committee were last-minute appointees of the Biden administration and noted that, without ousting advisors from the current group, the Trump administration would not have been able to appoint a majority of new members until 2028.

Kennedy claimed that the panel has been “plagued with persistent conflicts of interest and has become little more than a rubber stamp for any vaccine.”

But all HHS agencies and their advisory panels have had rigorous policies for conflicts of interest, and there have been no related issues for years. All members of federal vaccine advisory committees are already required to comply with regulations around disclosing potential conflicts of interest.

The announcement comes days after pediatric infectious disease expert Dr. Lakshmi Panagiotakopoulos resigned as co-leader of ACIP due to the belief she is “no longer able to help the most vulnerable members” of the U.S. population.

Health policy experts previously told CNBC that a shake-up of the advisory committee could produce politicized recommendations that highlight the harms rather than the benefits of shots. Those recommendations could also create greater distrust in the CDC and Trump administration among scientists and public health experts.

ACIP has also scrutinized vaccine products in the past, in contrast to what Kennedy and other Trump administration figures have argued. In certain instances, the group has recommended more restricted use of vaccines than their approval under the Food and Drug Administration would permit.

For example, the FDA approved Merck’s HPV vaccine for use in women and men ages 9 to 45. But the CDC only recommends its use in patients ages 9 to 26, because there is a lower public health benefit of the vaccine in those ages 27 to 45.
