Analyst Reveals When Bitcoin Price Will Hit New ATH Based On Historical Data

He noted that between 2015 and 2017, BTC enjoyed a bull run for 1,065 days, while between 2017 and 2018, it took 365 days for BTC to bottom in the bear market. Similarly, BTC enjoyed another bull run lasting 1,065 days between 2018 and 2021 before entering a bear market that lasted 365 days.

Related Reading

Furthermore, between 2022 and 2025, the Bitcoin price experienced another bull run lasting 1,065 days, with BTC rallying to an ATH of 126,000. The leading crypto then topped in October 2025 and has since been in a bear market. Based on this historical data, BTC may be on course to be in this bear market until October 5, which will complete the 365-day cycle.

The analyst’s accompanying chart showed that the Bitcoin price could rally to between $140,000 and $150,000 in the next bull run before the leading crypto tops in 2030 and enters another bear market. Meanwhile, this historical data suggests that the Bitcoin bottom isn’t in, despite BTC’s recent rally above $80,000. Bitcoin is once again in a downtrend amid inflation concerns and fears that the U.S.-Iran war could begin soon following stalled peace talks.

It’s fair to assume tech was a topic that came up on the trip.

The visit got off to a strong start for the group of execs, with Chinese President Xi Jinping saying that China would open up to U.S. businesses. Execs also had their chance to make a pitch directly to the Beijing premier, according to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

The U.S. business leaders had the “opportunity yesterday in a meeting with President Trump and President Xi to come in and talk a little bit about their companies,” Greer said in an interview with Bloomberg TV on Friday. He specifically name-checked Nvidia’s Jensen Huang as being there.

No talk of chips

But — and this is a big but for the Nvidia chief — Greer added that there was no talk of “chip exports controls at the [bilateral] meeting.”

A licensing deal for Nvidia’s H200 chips would be “politically explosive” and trigger a “fierce backlash from China hawks” in Congress, Heidi Crebo-Rediker, senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, told CNBC earlier in the week.

Despite potential opposition at home, Reuters reported on Thursday that Washington had cleared sales of Nvidia’s H200 AI chips to several major Chinese technology firms, citing three people familiar with the matter.

There’s also a reluctance to become reliant on Nvidia’s chips on the Chinese side.

“As to whether the Chinese are going to buy [U.S. chips] or not, they’re making their own determinations,” said Greer. “They’re very committed to domestic production, they often see U.S. high tech as a threat to them. If we’re ahead of the game on AI chips…sometimes they feel that can stop their own growth.”

Critical and rare earth minerals

The other key tech area many expected would come up was U.S. access to critical and rare earth minerals — of which China controls the vast majority of the market.

Beijing’s chokehold on critical and rare earth minerals was a key factor in the country’s retaliation against U.S. tariffs in 2025, curbing some exports before a trade truce came into effect.

While the agreement runs until this fall — which Greer described as “solid” — there is uncertainty over whether the truce would be extended. “We’ll see about that,” he said when asked.

“There’s certainly a willingness on both sides, that if this continues to work out well for each country, to continue that and to extend this ability to make sure we’re getting rare earths,” Greer said. He added that though the U.S. has seen rare earths from China come up to “better levels, sometimes it’s slow.”

An extension of that agreement would be the “best-case outcome” for U.S. access to critical and rare earth minerals, said Crebo-Rediker. “The U.S. and its allies cannot out-mine, out-process or outspend China quickly enough to rebuild resilience in the near term.”

It’s likely negotiations will continue on this front — one of the most sensitive topics between the two countries — well into the summer. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it on the table again if Xi heads to the States for the return trip in September.

In November, following Nvidia’s latest earnings beat, CEO Jensen Huang boasted to investors about his company’s position in artificial intelligence and said about the hottest startup in the space, “Everything that OpenAI does runs on Nvidia today.”

While it’s true that Nvidia maintains a dominant position in AI chips and is now the most valuable company in the world, competition is emerging, and OpenAI is doing everything it can to diversify as it pursues a historically aggressive expansion plan.

On Wednesday, OpenAI announced a $10 billion deal with chipmaker Cerebras, a relatively nascent player in the space but one that’s angling for the public market. It was the latest in a string of deals between OpenAI and the companies making the processors needed to build large language models and run increasingly sophisticated workloads.

Last year, OpenAI committed more than $1.4 trillion to infrastructure deals with companies including Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices and Broadcom, en route to commanding a $500 billion private market valuation.

As OpenAI races to meet anticipated demand for its AI technology, it has signaled to the market that it wants as much processing power as it can find. Here are the major chip deals that OpenAI has signed as of January, and potential partners to keep an eye on in the future.

Since its early days building out large language models, long before the launch of ChatGPT and the start of the generative AI boom, OpenAI has relied on Nvidia’s graphics processing units.

In 2025, that relationship went to another level. Following an investment in OpenAI in late 2024, Nvidia announced in September that it would commit $100 billion to support OpenAI as it builds and deploys at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems.

A gigawatt is a measure of power, and 10 gigawatts is roughly equivalent to the annual power consumption of 8 million U.S. households, according to a CNBC analysis of data from the Energy Information Administration. Huang said in September that 10 gigawatts will equate to between 4 million and 5 million GPUs.

“This is a giant project,” Huang told CNBC at the time.

OpenAI and Nvidia said the first phase of the project is expected to come online in the second half of this year on Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform. However, during Nvidia’s quarterly earnings call in November, the company said there is “no assurance” that its agreement with OpenAI will progress beyond an announcement and to an official contract stage.

Nvidia’s first investment of $10 billion will be deployed when the first gigawatt is completed, and investments will be made at then-current valuations, as CNBC previously reported.

In October, OpenAI announced plans to deploy six gigawatts of AMD’s GPUs across multiple years and multiple generations of hardware.

As part of the deal, AMD has issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, which could amount to a roughly 10% stake in the company. The warrant includes vesting milestones tied to both deployment volume and AMD’s share price.

The companies said they plan to roll out the first gigawatt of chips in the second half of 2026, and added that the deal is worth billions of dollars, without disclosing a specific amount.

“You need partnerships like this that really bring the ecosystem together to ensure that, you know, we can really get the best technologies, you know, out there,” AMD CEO Lisa Su told CNBC at the time of the announcement.

Altman planted the seeds for the deal in June, when he appeared on stage alongside Su at an AMD launch event in San Jose, California. He said OpenAI planned to use AMD’s latest chips.

Broadcom calls its custom AI chips XPUs, and has thus far relied on a few customers. But its pipeline of potential deals has sparked so much enthusiasm on Wall Street that Broadcom is now valued at over $1.6 trillion.

OpenAI said it’s designing its own AI chips and systems that will be developed and distributed by Broadcom. The companies have agreed to deploy 10 gigawatts of these custom AI accelerators.

In the October release, the companies said Broadcom will aim to begin deploying racks of the AI accelerator and network systems by the second half of this year, with a goal to complete the project by the end of 2029.

But Broadcom CEO Hock Tan told investors during the company’s quarterly earnings call in December that he doesn’t expect much revenue from the OpenAI partnership in 2026.

“We appreciate the fact that it is a multiyear journey that will run through 2029,” Tan said. “I call it an agreement, an alignment of where we’re headed.”

OpenAI on Wednesday announced an agreement to deploy 750 megawatts of Cerebras’ AI chips that will come online across multiple tranches through 2028.

Cerebras builds large wafer-scale chips that can deliver responses up to 15 times faster than GPU-based systems, according to a release. The company is much smaller than Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom.

OpenAI’s deal with Cerebras is worth more than $10 billion, and it could be a boon for the chipmaker as it weighs a potential debut on the public markets.

“We are delighted to partner with OpenAI, bringing the world’s leading AI models to the world’s fastest AI processor,” Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman said in a statement.

Cerebras sorely needs marquee customers. In October, the company withdrew plans for an IPO, days after announcing that it raised over $1 billion in a fundraising round. It had filed for a public offering a year earlier, but its prospectus revealed a heavy reliance on a single customer in the United Arab Emirates, Microsoft-backed G42, which is also a Cerebras investor.

In November, OpenAI signed a $38 billion cloud deal with Amazon Web Services. OpenAI will run workloads through existing AWS data centers, but the cloud provider also plans to build out additional infrastructure for the startup as part of the agreement.

Amazon is also in talks to potentially invest more than $10 billion in OpenAI, as CNBC previously reported.

OpenAI could decide to use Amazon’s AI chips as part of these investment discussions, but nothing official has been determined, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who asked not to be named because the discussions are confidential.

AWS announced its Inferentia chips in 2018, and the latest generation of its Trainium chips in late 2025.

Google Cloud also supplies OpenAI with computing capacity thanks to a deal that was quietly finalized last year. But OpenAI said in June that it has no plans to use Google’s in-house chips called tensor processing units, which Broadcom also helps produce.

Intel has been the biggest AI laggard among traditional chipmakers, which explains why the company recently took massive investments from the U.S. government and Nvidia. Reuters reported in 2024, citing people with knowledge of the discussions, that Intel had a chance to invest in OpenAI years earlier and potentially make hardware for the then-fledgling startup, offering it a way to avoid reliance on Nvidia.

Intel decided against the deal, according to Reuters.

In October, Intel announced a new data center GPU that it’s codenamed Crescent Island and says is “designed to meet the growing demands of AI inference workloads and will offer high memory capacity and energy-efficient performance.” The company said “customer sampling” is expected in the second half of 2026.

Wall Street will hear updates on Intel’s latest AI efforts when the company kicks off tech earnings season next week.

Michael Saylor’s firm Strategy continues to make Bitcoin headlines with its enormous purchases, making it one of the largest holders in the world.

Related Reading

Reports show the company owns 671,268 Bitcoin, roughly 3.2% of the total supply, valued at about $58.61 billion at the time of publication, according to Saylor Tracker.

Bitcoin entrepreneur Anthony Pompliano said on his podcast that it would be extremely difficult for any other public company to match Strategy’s buying pace.

Massive Holdings And Recent Purchase

Strategy announced a fresh buy of 10,645 Bitcoin for $980.3 million, paying an average of $92,098 per coin. That move pushed its total hoard to roughly 3.2% of all Bitcoin in existence. Those are large figures. They also show why rivals would need huge sums to close the gap.

Pompliano On The Scale Needed To Compete

According to comments made on The Pomp Podcast, Pompliano said that a company trying to match Strategy would have to “raise hundreds of billions of dollars.” He said it would be “very hard to see that happening.”

He pointed to Strategy’s early entry in 2020, when Saylor’s initial purchase was about $500 million while Bitcoin traded between $9,000 and $10,000.

That initial stake, based on current prices cited in reports, is now worth more than $4.8 billion with Bitcoin trading around $86,950.

Strategy’s Bitcoin stash is valued at $58.16 billion at the time of reporting, according to Saylor Tracker.

Market Impact And Buying Method

Market watchers have flagged Strategy’s growing share as something to watch. Some worry a single large holder could influence price moves. Others note the firm does most of its buying through over-the-counter desks.

OTC trades are used to handle big orders without sending shockwaves through exchange order books. Many investors see the regular, large purchases as a positive sign for Bitcoin demand.

BTCUSD currently trading at $86,541. Chart: TradingView

Holding Strategy And Influence Concerns

Pompliano described 3.2% as “a big number, but it’s also a small number.” He added, “It’s not like they own 10%.” That view captures a split: the holding is large enough to matter for supply dynamics and market psychology, but not so large that it gives absolute control. Still, the combination of size and repeated buys draws attention from traders and regulators alike.

Outlook And Long Term Plans

Reports quote Strategy’s CEO Phong Lee as saying the company probably won’t sell any Bitcoin until at least 2065. Saylor has also posted that he plans on “buying the top forever.” Those statements reinforce a long-term stance rather than short-term trading. The market tends to treat such commitments as bullish, and many participants adjust expectations for future demand accordingly.

Related Reading

A Dominant Buyer

With 671,268 Bitcoin on the books and a steady program of purchases, Strategy remains a dominant public buyer.

Based on current numbers and public comments, it will be difficult for another listed company to match that level of accumulation without very large capital raises or a dramatic change in corporate behavior.

The pace set by Strategy is likely to keep drawing attention from investors watching supply and demand for Bitcoin.

Madagascar’s president has fled the African nation, the head of the opposition and other officials said on Monday (Oct 13), the second time that young protesters have toppled a government in weeks of worldwide Gen Z unrest.

Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, leader of the opposition in parliament, told Reuters that President Andry Rajoelina left Madagascar on Sunday after units of the army defected and joined the protesters.

“We called the staff of the presidency and they confirmed that he left the country,” he said, adding that Rajoelina’s current whereabouts were unknown.

The president’s office, which had earlier said Rajoelina would address the nation at 7pm (Tuesday, 12am, Singapore time) on Monday, did not reply to requests for comment.

PRESIDENT LEFT ON FRENCH MILITARY PLANE

A military source told Reuters that Rajoelina flew out of the country on a French military aircraft on Sunday. French radio RFI said he had struck a deal with President Emmanuel Macron.

The source said that a French Army Casa aircraft landed in Madagascar’s Sainte Marie airport on Sunday.

“Five minutes later, a helicopter arrived and transferred its passenger into the Casa,” the source said, adding that Rajoelina was the passenger.

Demonstrations had erupted in the former French colony on Sep 25 over water and power shortages but quickly escalated into an uprising over broader grievances, including corruption, bad governance and lack of basic services.

The anger mirrors recent protests against ruling elites in countries including Nepal, where the prime minister was forced to resign last month, and Morocco.

LOST SUPPORT OF ARMY, GENDARMERIE

Rajoelina had appeared increasingly isolated after losing the support of CAPSAT, an elite unit which had helped him seize power in a 2009 coup.

CAPSAT joined the protesters over the weekend, saying it refused to shoot at them and escorted thousands of demonstrators in the main square of the capital Antananarivo.

It then said it was taking charge of the military and appointed a new army chief, prompting Rajoelina to warn on Sunday of an attempt to seize power in the island nation off the coast of southern Africa.

On Monday, a faction of the paramilitary gendarmerie supporting the protests also took control of the gendarmerie at a formal ceremony in the presence of senior government officials, a Reuters witness said.

The president of the Senate – a focus of public anger during the protests – was relieved of his functions, the Senate said in a statement, and Jean André Ndremanjary was appointed on a temporary basis.

In the absence of a president, the leader of the Senate takes the post until elections are held.

“THE PRESIDENT MUST QUIT”

On Monday, thousands of people gathered in a square in the capital, shouting “the president must quit now”.

Hotel worker Adrianarivony Fanomegantsoa, 22, told Reuters his 300,000-ariary (US$67) monthly salary was barely enough to cover food, explaining his reasons for joining the protests.

“In 16 years, the president and his government have done nothing except enrich themselves while the people stay poor. And the youth, the Gen Z, suffer the most,” he said.

At least 22 people have been killed in clashes between protesters and the security forces since Sep 25, according to the United Nations.

Madagascar, where the median age is less than 20, has a population of about 30 million – three-quarters of whom live in poverty, with gross domestic product per capita plunging 45 per cent between independence in 1960 and 2020, according to the World Bank.

While the country is best known for producing most of the world’s vanilla, other exports, including nickel, cobalt, textiles and shrimps, are also vital to foreign earnings and employment.

Bitcoin’s climb shows no signs of stopping, and one of crypto’s loudest bulls says the rally could keep running as long as governments keep expanding the money supply.

According to his CNBC interview, Anthony Pompliano called Bitcoin a “savings technology” and argued that people can protect their earnings by putting part of their money into BTC.

Reports have disclosed that Bitcoin recently hit an all-time high of $126,100 and traded around $122,500 at press time, figures that form the backdrop for Pompliano’s comments.

JUST IN: Anthony Pompliano tells CNBC Bitcoin will never stop going up.

Pompliano Frames Bitcoin As Savings Technology

Pompliano told CNBC that the core idea is simple: work, save, and put part of your savings into crypto to preserve value as fiat currencies weaken.

He said that as long as governments and central banks keep printing money, demand for a scarce asset like Bitcoin should remain strong.

Based on his on-camera remarks, he expects the trend to push adoption higher and to reshape how investors think about storing wealth.

BTC market cap currently at $2.45 trillion. Chart: TradingView

The New ‘Hurdle Rate’

Pompliano went further, describing the top digital asset as the “hurdle rate” of modern finance — a baseline investors must beat before choosing other assets.

He contrasted Bitcoin’s performance with traditional markets, arguing that the S&P 500 has risen by more than a hundred percent since 2020 in fiat terms but has fallen roughly 90% when priced in BTC, a comparison he used to stress BTC’s long-term outperformance. This framing explains why he and some others say, “If you can’t beat Bitcoin, buy it.”

Further Gains Ahead

Based on projections, BTC could climb about 20% to $148,500 by the end of the year. The same forecasts sees a jump in market infrastructure: the number of crypto exchange-traded funds could double to 80, and stablecoin circulation is predicted to reach $500 billion as more money moves onchain.

Those observations realistically bolster an argument that the market is maturing beyond the realm of a short-term speculation.

Market Size And Stablecoin Liquidity Here To Stay

Market intelligence reveals that the total cryptocurrency market is sizeable at roughly $4.3 trillion, according to CoinGecko.

In addition, another market data source, DeFiLlama, reports that the stablecoin supply has exceeded $300 billion as an indication that there is a lot of liquidity onchain and it could flow into risk assets like Bitcoin.

In a shocking development, the price of Ethereum has fallen below the key $4,000 level as the ongoing bearish pressure in the broader crypto market intensifies. On-chain data shows that a notable portion of ETH is still being withdrawn from crypto exchanges in the face of the growing market volatility.

Investors Are Still Withdrawing Ethereum From Exchanges

Even though its price is heading downward, the on-chain dynamics of Ethereum are entering a striking new phase. A recent report reveals that the total balance of ETH on all cryptocurrency exchanges has dropped sharply to its lowest level in years.

Shared by Coin Bureau on the social media platform X, this swift withdrawal of coins from centralized platforms highlights a clear shift toward long-term holding and self-custody among investors. Typically, such a trend is viewed as a sign of increasing confidence in ETH’s future trajectory.

Since there are fewer tokens available for purchase in every crypto exchange in the ever-evolving sector, the market appears to be entering a tightening phase. This trend might increase the volatility and pave the way for more robust price reactions in the coming months.

According to Coin Bureau, ETH’s total exchange balance has plunged by over 20% since July this year. After the persistent decline in inflows, the overall number of ETH present in exchanges is approximately 14.8 million ETH, which marks the lowest levels since 2016.

In the midst of the fading Ethereum inflows to crypto exchanges, the ETH treasury is growing rapidly as companies continue to acquire the leading altcoin. The ETH treasury growth is hinting at a potential supply shock in the near future.

Francesco Andreoli, a developer and investor, highlighted that ETH is on a tear due to the notable growth of its treasury reserves among big companies. Within a two-month period, cryptocurrency treasuries holding ETH have soared from $2 billion to around $21 billion.

This rise highlights ETH’s growing allure as a long-term strategic asset and the rapid diversification of treasuries into digital assets. Andreoli stated that the surge makes ETH the fastest-growing treasury asset in the crypto and financial sector.

A Shift In Crypto Treasury Dominance

Ethereum treasury’s significant growth has placed it ahead of Bitcoin treasuries, marking a turning point in the digital asset landscape. With this rise in treasury reserves, ETH is now carving out a dominant role, as institutional investors look beyond Bitcoin.

Coin Bureau noted that Digital Asset Treasuries (DATs) are now in control of 0.36% of the ETH supply in circulation, edging out that of BTC. Data shows that DATs are presently holding 0.35% of the BTC overall supply.

Although the disparity in treasuries is tiny now, it is likely to become bigger in the near future. ETH’s outperformance may be bolstered by its utility-driven ecosystem, staking rewards, and deep integration across Decentralized Finance (DeFi).

Bitcoin’s security may need an upgrade sooner than many expect, according to Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of Solana.

Speaking at the All-In Summit 2025, Yakovenko warned there is roughly a 50/50 chance of a major quantum-computing breakthrough within the next five years and urged the Bitcoin community to start shifting to quantum-resistant signatures now.

Quantum Risk On A Short Timeline

According to reports, Yakovenko argued that advances in quantum hardware — helped along by rapid progress in AI — could reach a point where current cryptography used by Bitcoin becomes vulnerable by about 2030.

He recommended migrating away from Bitcoin’s existing signature scheme, ECDSA, toward algorithms designed to resist quantum attacks.

Bitcoin Uses Signatures That Could Be Targeted

Bitcoin transactions rely on ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) to prove ownership.

Based on technical warnings from many researchers, a powerful enough quantum computer running algorithms such as Shor’s could, in theory, break those signatures and expose private keys tied to addresses that have revealed their public keys.

That is the vulnerability Yakovenko highlighted.

Experts Offer Mixed Timelines

Other voices in crypto put the timeline farther out. Reports show Adam Back of Blockstream thinks quantum machines that can threaten Bitcoin are likely decades away — he has cited a figure near 20 years.

Some figures, like Samson Mow, suggest a longer window as well, while newer commentators warn the risk could arrive much sooner if breakthroughs accelerate.

The split in views reflects real uncertainty about when — not whether — quantum will matter for blockchains.

What A Fix Would Mean In Practice

Moving Bitcoin to quantum-resistant signatures is possible, but it is not small work. Based on analysis across industry pieces, such a shift could require major protocol changes, widespread wallet updates, and careful rollout plans to avoid breaking existing addresses or exposing users during the transition.

Some proposals include one-time migration tools and new address types, but none is a simple flip of a switch.

On Action And Urgency

Based on reports, Yakovenko’s main point was urgency: begin testing and building a migration path now, not later.

He noted Bitcoin’s strengths but stressed that preparation would protect users and preserve trust if quantum capabilities arrive faster than many expect.

Industry coverage has already circulated his remarks, prompting renewed discussion across developer forums and research groups.

What Happens Next

For now, Bitcoin developers and node operators face a choice between steady, cautious research and faster, coordinated engineering to prepare for several possible futures.

Yakovenko’s estimate — a 50/50 chance in five years — is far from a consensus, but it has pushed the debate back into public view.

Miki Habryn can finally sleep at night. For many months, in the run-up to and after President Trump had won the election, that wasn’t the case.

Up until June this year Habryn was living what many would call the American dream. She had a job at ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, surrounded by some of the brightest minds in artificial intelligence. Her pay was comfortably in the six-figures, and she owned a house in San Francisco, the first city she had ever lived in which felt like home.

Her six-year old daughter, Steffi, was enjoying school and her wife, Eden, was thriving in her career as an artist.

But the family couldn’t shake their concern about the direction U.S. politics was moving in. While Habryn was born in Poland and raised in Australia from the age of five, her partner and child had only ever known life in the States.

When President Trump returned to the Oval Office, the family made the decision to leave San Francisco—and Habryn’s dream job—and move to Stockholm, Sweden. There they hope to stay indefinitely.

Habryn said she made the choice to leave the the U.S., where she had lived since 2007, one night in March. She said: “My wife was traveling on the East Coast and I was home with Steffi. And something about that particular night, I was awake worrying about things which was not uncommon, and I just got to the point of: It’s time to go, I can’t just stay here and do nothing, but doing anything comes with such terrible risks for me because of my status.”

“If I came to the attention of, or got arrested by the federal authorities, the outcome of that could be tragic. It turns out that my wife, on the same day, reached the same conclusion.”

Habryn explains the “status” she refers to: “During the campaign it was immigrants and transgender people that was occupying the airways and since I’m both, they’ve got me coming and going effectively.”

The family are not alone in their decision to leave Trump’s America. While it’s hard to pin down the number of people leaving the U.S. every year (the Department of State previously told Fortune it does not keep such records) in 2024 applications from Americans to live in the United Kingdom alone spiked 26% compared to a year prior. More than 6,100 Americans applied for British citizenship last year, a record number.

Immigration experts also previously told Fortune their phones had been ringing off the hook—particularly since that infamous Trump and Biden debate, when many people felt the fate of the November election had been decided. Montreal-based immigration experts Moving2Canada, for example, saw inquiries spike in both 2016 and 2020 and in 2024 saw enquiries triple in volume after the Trump vs. Biden debate.

Life at OpenAI

Habryn is no stranger to working in America’s tech elite: She moved to the U.S. originally to work for Google in Mountain View where she stayed for the next 12 years. Her experience at OpenAI, where she worked from May 2024 to July 2025, is a familiar story to many in Big Tech: An intense atmosphere, “wonderful” people and riveting work.

“It’s challenging,” Habryn said. “I think it’s exciting but I was lucky enough to have a lot of security and confidence in my own abilities—I think without that it would have been very, very hard.”

The prospect of losing her dream role in the research department of one of the world’s most-talked about companies was a key issue which held Habryn back from making the move earlier. While her team was supportive of the decision, ultimately the legalities of Habryn’s work meant it couldn’t move with her.

“It was really hard,” she said. “That was probably the reason it took me as long as it did to make the decision, because honestly I had this period of grief stepping away from this. I’ve been working in tech for a long time … and really the only thing I want to be working on is AI.

“It was hard and I didn’t love making that decision but, ultimately, it was just a question of priority.”

Habryn is confident she will find interesting work when she needs to, and the family are settling into their newly purchased home in Stockholm—the family doubt they will ever return to the U.S. That comes with “guilt”, Habryn says: “I buy the narrative that you should fight for the things that you believe in and that there is value to staying and fighting for that. If it were not for Steffi, I think we would have.”

Ultimately her six-year-old daughter is their focus: “We set aside a lot of things that we love to do [because] we want Steffi to have a routine, a stable home, a stable school and all those things. The hardest thing about this whole move has been worrying about the impact on her and so the priority was that we don’t want to do this again, we’re going to move once, and we want to put down roots and spend the next 15/20 years there.”
