Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

With bearish pressure building across the cryptocurrency market, the Ethereum price is steadily dropping toward the $1,950 mark once again, a level last seen in March. Despite the altcoin’s declining price action and general unfavorable market conditions, large ETH holders seem to be holding onto their positions.

What Ethereum Whales Are Doing In This Pullback

Ethereum’s large investors have remained resilient in recent market sessions. While ETH’s price has struggled to sustain strong momentum, these key investors continue to hold on to their positions rather than aggressively reduce their exposure or sell off their coins.

In a waning market environment, the activity of large holders is closely monitored as it typically provides more insight into long-term market conviction and sentiment among institutional investors. This trend is seen in the Ethereum Whale Vs Retail Delta metric, which has flipped toward the upside once again.

As reported by CW, a verified data analyst at the CryptoQuant platform and crypto investor, the crucial metric has now surpassed the 0.5 level and continues to move in an upward direction. When this metric flips upward, it is a sign that whales are regaining influence over the market, reflecting renewed confidence in the asset’s long-term prospects.

Source: Chart from CW on X

Amid ongoing volatility in ETH’s price action, the large investors have shifted into an accumulation phase as they quietly and rapidly increase their long positions in the altcoin. Should this trend continue over the following days and weeks, it could play a critical role in shaping the altcoin’s next trajectory.

Another aspect that is picking up again is the Ethereum Futures market. CW revealed that movement in the market is steadily increasing, as investors start to lean toward the upside for ETH. Open Interest (OI) has transitioned into an upward direction alongside a persistent rise in long positions.

Investors appear to be taking advantage of the current downside performance of ETH’s price rather than exiting the market in fear. Furthermore, this activity suggests that investors may be positioning for the altcoin’s next major rally.

This Metric Could Support ETH’s Next Move

Bullish momentum is starting to reflect on several key Ethereum metrics even as prices trend downward. Ali Charts, a seasoned crypto investor and data analyst, has outlined a renewed shift, emerging in the ETH market as the Market Value To Realized Value (MVRV) metric declines below the 0.8 level.

However, this bullish development may fade soon. According to Ali Charts, whenever ETH drops below the 0.8 MVRV band, the move is not sustained for very long. Data shows that in the past, this exact zone represented a high-probability macro accumulation window. At the same time, this window could build the ultimate foundation for the next major bull market.

At the time of writing, the ETH price was trading at $1,980, demonstrating a nearly 5% decline in the last 24 hours. However, its trading volume is moving in an opposite direction, rising by more than 17% over the past day.

“I unfortunately think it’s very early,” Sambur, who is co-head of private equity, told CNBC’s “Money Movers.”

Some Wall Street analysts have been comforted by the recent rebound in the IGV Software ETF, which has climbed about 3% in March following a bruising start to the year. The ETF is still down 20% this year.

Sambur said software names are under scrutiny and facing critical questions revolving around their revenue model, gross margin profile and valuations with competition intensifying from Anthropic and OpenAI.

“I know the markets are moving up and they’ve rebounded a little bit, but I don’t see any of those four things changing because of the real question mark about what the impact [is] of AI lowering the cost to compete, and therefore increasing the level of competition,” he said.

Sambur, who joined Apollo in 2004, said the displacement from AI will be significant and “is faster than I’ve ever seen at any point in my career.”

Part of the issue, Sambur said, is that the industry is unable to figure out how the software story will evolve in the next one to five years because the technology itself is constantly changing.

“No one knows,” he said.

“People are now recalibrating the valuations and baking in more margin of safety for very large unknowns,” he added.

It speaks to why most software companies have taken a conservative stance when detailing their outlook for the year.

Sambur also noted investing opportunities in deals or buybacks as a growing list of software names, including Intuit, Hubspot and Salesforce, have announced share repurchases.

However, as RBC Capital’s Rishi Jaluria wrote in a note to clients on Thursday, for the most part, buyback announcements are being overshadowed by AI fears.

Jaluria said the debate taking place right now on Wall Street is whether share repurchases are a bullish signal or companies “waving the white flag.” He added that buybacks lower the likelihood of mergers and acquisitions, which could put a lid on innovation.

“If companies are funding buybacks with major cash balances on hand, that’s one thing, but huge buybacks mean less capital for future M&A, especially if raising debt,” wrote Jaluria.’

Ethereum has slipped below the critical $2,000 level, reinforcing a broader bearish market structure as selling pressure intensifies across the crypto sector. The breakdown comes amid weakening macro sentiment, persistent outflows from risk assets, and declining confidence in short-term crypto demand. Together, these factors have pushed ETH into a defensive phase, with traders increasingly focused on downside liquidity zones rather than recovery signals.

Recent data highlighted by Lookonchain points to three major on-chain liquidation clusters that could shape Ethereum’s next moves. These zones represent areas where leveraged positions may be forced to close if price declines continue, potentially accelerating volatility. Historically, such liquidation pockets tend to act as magnets during corrective phases, amplifying both panic selling and short-term price swings.

Market sentiment has also been affected by reports of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin moving and selling ETH. While these transactions are often linked to funding ecosystem development, charitable initiatives, or operational needs rather than outright bearish positioning, they can still influence trader psychology. In fragile markets, even neutral fundamental events can trigger disproportionate reactions.

Lookonchain data highlights three major on-chain liquidation clusters that could significantly influence Ethereum’s short-term price dynamics if bearish pressure persists. According to the analysis, Trend Research reportedly holds about 356,150 ETH, valued near $671 million, with estimated liquidation levels between $1,562 and $1,698. If price approaches this band, forced position closures could amplify volatility and accelerate downside momentum.

Combined holdings are estimated at around 293,302 ETH, roughly $553 million, with potential liquidation thresholds between $1,329 and $1,368. This zone sits deeper in the corrective structure and could act as a secondary stress level if broader market weakness continues.

A third cluster attributed to the entity known as 7 Siblings holds approximately 286,733 ETH, valued at around $541 million. Their liquidation prices are significantly lower, near $1,075 and $1,029, representing a deeper capitulation scenario should selling pressure intensify further.

It is important to note that liquidation estimates depend heavily on leverage assumptions, collateral adjustments, and evolving market conditions. Still, these zones provide a useful framework for understanding where volatility could increase, as leveraged positions historically tend to magnify both downward cascades and eventual stabilization phases in crypto markets.

Ethereum’s weekly chart shows a decisive deterioration in market structure after losing the psychologically important $2,000 level. Price has broken below the 50-week and 100-week moving averages, signaling a shift from late-cycle consolidation into a more defensive phase. This type of multi-MA breakdown historically reflects declining momentum rather than a simple short-term correction.

Volume behavior reinforces this interpretation. The latest downside move is accompanied by expanding sell-side volume, suggesting distribution rather than passive retracement. When rising volume coincides with lower highs and lower lows, it typically confirms sustained selling pressure rather than temporary volatility.

Technically, the next key support zone appears between roughly $1,600 and $1,750, where prior consolidation occurred in earlier market phases. A weekly close below this range would likely expose deeper liquidity pockets toward the $1,300 region, aligning with previously identified liquidation clusters.

From a trend perspective, Ethereum is now trading below all major weekly moving averages, which often caps upside attempts unless reclaim levels occur quickly. For recovery credibility, price would need to regain the $2,200–$2,400 region and stabilize above it.

Intel stock slid more than 7% on Tuesday, after rallying earlier this week on a $2 billion capital injection from SoftBank and reports that the Trump administration is weighing different ways to get involved with the company.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told CNBC on Tuesday that the U.S. government must receive an equity stake in Intel in exchange for CHIPS Act funds.

Sources told Faber that the chipmaker is now looking beyond SoftBank for an equity boost.

“They need money to build whatever it is that the customers may actually, ultimately want,” Faber said on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street.” “And having the CHIPS Act money, which is free, so to speak, no strings attached, become equity is not helpful to them because it’s dilutive.”

Intel is attempting a turnaround after suffering from years of declining sales and shrinking market share.

The company has struggled to capitalize on the artificial intelligence boom in advanced semiconductors and has spent heavily to stand up a manufacturing business that’s yet to secure a significant customer.

Intel has also overhauled its leadership, bringing in Lip-Bu Tan to be its CEO in March, after his predecessor, Pat Gelsinger, was ousted in December.

Two weeks ago, President Donald Trump called for Tan to resign, saying he was “highly CONFLICTED.”

The president’s tone toward Tan and the company cooled after the CEO visited the White House to discuss his background.

Many new tax breaks in the bill — on auto loans, tips and overtime pay, and for older Americans — are structured as tax deductions.

How much money you save with tax deductions, which reduce your taxable income, depends on your bracket. Deductions are more valuable to higher-income households and less beneficial for lower earners, experts said.

“The most modest-income workers can’t use a tax deduction at all,” said Carl Davis, research director of the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, a left-leaning policy think tank.

Senate Republicans passed the legislation with the narrowest of margins on Tuesday. It now heads to the House, where its fate is uncertain.

The Republican bill, originally called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, has more than $4 trillion of net tax cuts, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

Among them are several new tax deductions:

Car loan interest: Households can deduct up to $10,000 of annual interest on new car loans from their taxable income;

Tips: Workers can deduct up to $25,000 of tips each year from their taxable income.

Overtime pay: Workers can deduct up to $12,500 of annual overtime pay from their taxable income. (Married couples filing a joint tax return can deduct up to $25,000.)

Senior ‘bonus’ deduction: Americans ages 65 and over can deduct up to $6,000 from their taxable income.

If enacted as drafted, these deductions would be temporary, available from 2025 through 2028. They also carry various limitations such as income restrictions.

Why tax deductions are less valuable to low earners

A tax deduction reduces the amount of income that’s subject to tax, i.e., taxable income. You can find your taxable income on line 15 of your Form 1040 individual income tax return.

While the proposed tax deductions may sound large, there are a few reasons why low earners may not see much or any benefit, experts said.

1. You need taxable income

Households need some taxable income to benefit from a deduction, said Garrett Watson, director of policy analysis at the Tax Foundation.

Low earners already get a large financial benefit from the standard deduction, Watson said.

The standard deduction is worth up to $15,000 for singles and $30,000 for married couples filing jointly in 2025. (If the bill passes as drafted, it would raise the standard deduction to $15,750 for single filers, and to $31,500 for married filing jointly.)

More from Personal Finance:
Senate Republicans’ spending bill boosts child tax credit
Senate bill touts tax help for seniors on Social Security
Trump megabill axes $7,500 EV tax credit after September

To get a financial benefit from the new tax deductions for car loans, seniors, tips and overtime, a household’s taxable income would have to exceed these thresholds, experts said.

More than a third, or 37%, of tipped workers in 2022 had incomes low enough that they didn’t owe federal income tax, according to an analysis last year by the Budget Lab at Yale University.

That means a “meaningful share” of tipped workers wouldn’t benefit from a tax deduction on tips, it said.

2. Value depends on tax bracket

The relative value of tax deductions depends on a household’s tax bracket, experts said.

There are seven federal income-tax brackets: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. Higher-income households generally fall in a higher tax bracket — any therefore can get a bigger benefit from reducing their taxable income.

“If you’re in a somewhat higher bracket, every dollar you get to deduct is worth more to you because that dollar would have been taxed at a higher rate,” Davis said.

Let’s say two households — one in the 22% bracket and one in the 10% bracket — each deduct $1 of tipped income. The former gets a tax benefit worth 22 cents, while the latter gets one worth 10 cents, Davis said.

3. Some deductions are limited

There are other reasons why households may not be able to max out certain deductions.

For example, households would need a car loan of roughly $112,000 or more to generate $10,000 of annual interest on a typical six-year loan, Jonathan Smoke, chief economist at Cox Automotive, an auto market research firm, told CNBC last month.

Only about 1% of new auto loans are this big, according to Cox Automotive data.

By comparison, the average new car buyer would be able to deduct $3,000 of interest from their taxable income in the first year of their loan, Smoke said. A deduction of that size would yield an average total tax benefit of about $500 or less in the loan’s first year, he said.

There are, however, two elements of the tax breaks that seek to better target benefits to low- and middle- income households.

For one, they’re all what’s known as “above-the-line” deductions.

This means households can claim them regardless of whether they use the standard deduction or itemize their deductions.

High-income households may be more likely to itemize, meaning they detail a list of eligible deductions on their tax return.

Taxpayers itemize when the deductions add up to more than the standard deduction. Some deductions are only available to taxpayers who itemize, such as for “SALT” (or, a deduction for state and local income taxes and property taxes) or mortgage interest.

Also, the new deductions have income limits, barring them from the highest-income households.

For example, the overtime deduction’s value starts to decline once an individual’s income exceeds $150,000 ($300,000 for married couples filing jointly). The value of the senior “bonus” falls once income exceeds $75,000 ($150,000 if married and filing jointly).

Tax credits

Tax credits are another mechanism to lower a household’s tax bill.

A tax credit reduces your tax liability dollar-for-dollar. (If you claim a $1,000 credit, it can reduce your tax bill by $1,000.) Credits have the same dollar value regardless of your tax bracket.

Unlike deductions, the “benefits from tax credits are skewed toward lower- and middle-income households,” the Congressional Budget Office wrote in 2021.

Credits can be “refundable” or “nonrefundable”:

Refundable: The credit can reduce your tax bill below zero. In this case, you’d get a tax refund. For example, if your tax liability is $500 and you qualify for a $600 refundable credit, you’d get a $100 refund, according to a CBO example. Some credits are partially refundable, which limits the size of the refund.

Nonrefundable: Other credits are nonrefundable, meaning that they can reduce your tax bill to zero, but no lower. Credits that are nonrefundable or only partially refundable may prevent those with low incomes from getting the full value.

The largest credits for individuals as measured by total government outlay are the child tax credit, earned income tax credit and the premium tax credit for health insurance, CBO said.

The Senate legislation would permanently raise the maximum child tax credit to $2,200 starting in 2025, and would index this figure for inflation starting in 2026. The credit is partially refundable: Low earners can get up to $1,700 as a tax refund.

But currently, 17 million children do not receive the full $2,000 child tax credit because their families don’t earn enough and owe enough taxes, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

After hitting a low of below $100,000 during the weekend, the Bitcoin price saw a 10% bounce, reclaiming $106,000 again. This was a welcome development as it provided some relief for altcoins, which have suffered major declines in their prices. However, it seems this move up will only be short-lived with the appearance of a double-top and fair value gaps (FVGs) looking to be filled close to the weekend lows.

Bitcoin Completes Liquidity Sweep To Form A Double Top

After the Bitcoin price moved above $106,000, crypto analyst Louigi pointed out that the digital asset might have formed a double top, something that is bearish for the cryptocurrency. This comes as there was a completion of a Buy Side Liquidity Sweet as the market determined its new direction.

Following the turn in the direction, there have been signs of buyer exhaustion as the price had initially stalled. This suggests that there was a decline in the bullish momentum, and this had begun with $106,600 as the key resistance area, and a rejection was expected.

After the sharp move upward, the crypto analyst said that Bitcoin had left gaps between buyers and sellers, which are usually referred to as Fair Value Gaps (FVGs). These are areas that the price tends to fall back to in a bid to regain balance, and they are often filled in quick succession.

In this case, there are multiple fair value gaps, going all the way toward $102,000. The first is the region below the $105,000 level, which is also the 0.28 Fibonacci retracement level and the first line for reaction, according to the analyst. A fall to this level without support, Louigi explains, would cause the price to shift toward the second gap at the 0.5-0.618 Fib level below $104,000.

Last but not least on the lineup is the 0.618-0.65 Fib levels at $102,000, which is a critical junction for Bitcoin. If this level fails to hold, then a retracement to the 0.786 Fib level becomes likely, and this lies just above the $101,000 price point.

Why This Thesis Could Be Invalidated

According to the crypto analyst, the Bitcoin price had formed a double top at $106,600, which meant that it had peaked at the time. However, Bitcoin has managed to surge beyond that point, even reaching as high as $108,000 before being rejected back downward.

With the price recovery, it could suggest that the FVGs below $106,000 could remain unfilled as Bitcoin campaigns for new all-time highs. With less than a 10% move from a new all-time high, it is likely that bulls could dominate into the third quarter of the year.

Ethereum whales have been very active lately, suggesting that the recent Ethereum price decline could have been driven by these large holders. This is especially important now that the altcoin’s price has been driven toward new monthly lows and selling pressure continues to mount. If these whales do not let up anytime soon, then it could be the trigger for the Ethereum price to lose the $2,00 support.

ETH Whale Volumes Surge 55%

According to data from IntoTheBlock, the Ethereum whales have roused from their recent slumber to take profit out of the market once again. This has been seen in metrics across large transaction numbers and volumes, ranging from both ETH volumes and dollar figures.

These large transactions, classified as transactions carrying at least $100,000 worth of coins, often show when whales are moving and when they are idle. The figures had first spiked going into the weekend on June 20, when it rose almost 100% from 1.89 million ETH transacted to over. 3.71 million ETH moved in a 24-hour period.

This coincided with the start of the market decline as the Ethereum price trended back toward $2,400. On Saturday, June 21, the numbers were much more muted, after falling to 1.57 million ETH. However, this would quickly change as sell-offs picked up by Sunday, and the crash was in full bloom.

Data shows that over 2.58 million ETH were moved in these large transactions on Sunday, suggesting that these large holders could have been selling as the price plummeted. In dollar figures, it was a total of $5.7 billion compared to the $3.66 billion moved the previous day.

This spike translates to a 55.62% increase compared to what was recorded the previous day, showing whales were very active as the Ethereum price fell toward $2,100. Given that the Ethereum holdings are 56% dominated by large holders, it shows how much sway these investors hold over the price, and moves from them either way can determine its direction.

Where Is Ethereum Price Headed?

As the Ethereum whale volumes continue to rise and the price trends low, crypto analyst Rektproof has predicted what might be next. While many expect the altcoin to find a bottom, the analyst sees only a relief bounce before the price falls toward new weekly lows.

The target from here is a complete fill of the CME gaps, and once the range is done, the analyst expects the price to fall toward $1,800. This is the level Rektproof suggests to start getting into spot positions in anticipation of a major bounce.

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Ethereum whales have started returning to the arena as the price has picked up once again. This return marks a turn for the digital asset, which has suffered from major sell-offs over the last few weeks. So far, they have more than doubled their activities in a single day period, showing a renewed interest in the market. The implications of this would be that Ethereum whales are driving the recovery and could trigger the start of the altcoin season.

Ethereum Whale Transactions Double In 24 Hours

According to the on-chain data aggregation website, IntoTheBlock, Ethereum whales have been one of the most active in recent days. The data alludes to an over 100% increase in their transaction volumes, as well as the number of transactions in a 24-hour period. The large transaction volumes alone rose 164.14% by Tuesday, bringing the total dollar value to around $7.84 billion.

For comparison, these large transactions involve transactions carrying at least $100,000 at the time they were moved. On Monday, there were only 3,080 transactions recorded. However, by Tuesday, this number had ballooned to almost 6,000. From here, the trend had grown, and an even higher rise was recorded in the volume of ETH that was transacted.

Compared to the total 1.18 million ETH that was moved by these large investors back on Monday, a total of 3.03 million ETH was moved by Tuesday alone. This translated to an over 150% increase in the volume of ETH transacted. This also carried on into the volume in dollars, moving from $2.97 billion on Monday to $7.84 billion on Tuesday.

Source: IntoTheBlock

The rise in the large transaction volumes coincides with the rise in the Ethereum price from around $2,500 to $2,700. This suggests that more of this volume was whales buying rather than selling, thus leading to the jump in the price of Ethereum.

Can This Trigger An Altcoin Season?

Historically, Ethereum has always been the leader of altcoin season, given its position as the largest altcoin in the market. This is also due to the fact that many of the top altcoins in the space are built on Ethereum’s infrastructure, making them a beta play to the second-largest cryptocurrency. So when the ETH price rose, so did the price of altcoins.

Given this trend, it is expected that Ethereum will once again lead the next altcoin season, and if its price continues to rise, the rest of the altcoin is expected to rise with it. However, there is still a problem as the Bitcoin dominance remains very high and would need to fall for the next altcoin season to begin. Ethereum would have to outperform Bitcoin, and so far, this has not been the case as ETH is yet to reach a new all-time high after Bitcoin, stalling the altcoin season.
