47-year-old killed with sharp weapon in Ambalangoda

A 47-year-old resident of Balapitiya was reportedly attacked to death using a sharp weapon following an escalation of a dispute within the Ambalangoda Police Division.

Ambalangoda Police initiated investigations after receiving information that the victim had succumbed to injuries sustained in a sharp-weapon attack while receiving treatment at Ambalangoda Hospital.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the murder was committed last afternoon (08) after a dispute between the deceased and another individual intensified, resulting in the victim being assaulted with a weapon.

The suspect has fled the area, and the Ambalangoda Police are conducting further investigations to apprehend him.

Fire breaks out in residential building in east Delhi, nine killed

At least nine people were killed after a fire broke out in a residential building in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar early Sunday (May 3, 2026), according to Delhi Fire Services officials.

The incident was reported around 3:48 a.m. at a four-storey building in Vivek Vihar Phase-I, following which police, fire and disaster management teams rushed to the spot.

‘‘Fire was in domestic articles in six flats in the building and bodies recovered from different floors and handed over to Delhi Police crime team. Search operations are underway,’’ said Division Office (DO) M. Verma.

According to the police, the blaze engulfed flats on the second, third and fourth floors of the building in B Block, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

‘‘Around 10 to 15 people were rescued from the premises during the firefighting operation. Two of them, who sustained minor injuries, were shifted to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital,’’ a senior police officer said.

A total of 12 fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames, while teams from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), traffic police and local police assisted in the rescue and evacuation efforts.

Police said the fire was brought under control after several hours.

The identities of the deceased are yet to be ascertained, and efforts are underway to determine the cause of the fire, police said.

Further investigation and proceedings are under way.

Delhi L-G, CM condole loss of lives

Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday (May 3, 2026) condoled the loss of lives in the fire tragedy in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar and said immediate medical assistance and relief are being provided to the affected people.

‘‘Deeply saddened by the tragic fire incident in Vivek Vihar Phase-I. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones in this devastating tragedy,’’ Mr. Sandhu said in a post on X.

‘‘I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and strength for the bereaved families during this difficult time,’’ he said.

The Lieutenant-Governor said the authorities have been directed to ensure that all necessary medical assistance is provided to the injured, along with immediate relief and support to those affected.

Delhi Fire Service personnel and emergency teams are on the ground, working tirelessly to manage the situation, he said.

In a post on X, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the situation is being constantly monitored. The incident was ‘‘extremely’’ tragic and distressed her a lot, she said.

She said the injured are being treated in a nearby hospital and prayed for their speedy recovery. She also extended her condolences to the bereaved families.

Ms. Gupta said the local administration, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, the Delhi Fire Service, the Delhi Police and top officials are carrying out rescue and relief measures.

‘‘The situation is being constantly monitored and local councillors and MLAs of the BJP have reached the spot. The Delhi government stands firmly with the affected families in every situation,’’ the Chief Minister said.

Nine killed in second Turkish school shooting in two days

At least eight students and one teacher have been killed and several others injured following a shooting at a school in southern Turkey, Interior Minister Mustafa Cifci has said.

The incident happened at Ayser Calik Secondary School in the Kahramanmaras area.

The attacker was also killed during the incident, local governor Mukerren Unluer said.

It comes a day after 16 people were injured after an ex-student opened fire at another high school, also in the south of the country, before killing himself.

Ciftci said 13 people were wounded, with six in critical condition.

The motive of Wednesday’s attack is not yet known and an investigation has been launched.

Turkish media reported that the attacker, believed to be a teenager, entered two classrooms and had five guns and seven magazines with him, which Unluer alleged belonged to his ex-police officer father.

The attacker’s father has since been detained by police, according to local media.

In video verified by the BBC people could be seen appearing to jump from the first floor windows of the school and run from the premises.

‘‘The sound of gunfire was very intense,’‘ a reporter for Turkish broadcaster NTV said, adding that there was ‘‘panic in front of the school’‘.

After news of the shooting broke, tearful parents gathered outside of the building.

Iranian intelligence minister killed, Israel says

Iran’s intelligence minister, Esmaeil Khatib, has been killed, according to the Israeli defence minister.

Khatib was “eliminated” in a strike overnight, Katz said.

There has been no confirmation from ⁠Iran regarding ⁠Khatib’s reported death.

Katz said ‌he and Prime ‌Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have authorised the military to ⁠kill any other senior Iranian official being targeted without the ⁠need for additional approval.

His reported death comes after Tehran confirmed the killings of the country’s powerful national security chief, Ali Larijani, and the head of the IRGC’s Basij paramilitary force.

Khatib was among the officials that the US was seeking information on last week, offering a reward of up to $10m.

The reward targeted 10 officials associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and also security chief Ali Larijani, who was killed on Monday, and the new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.

Sri Lanka repatriates remains of 84 Iranian sailors killed in US torpedo strike

Sri Lanka on Friday night repatriated the remains of 84 Iranian sailors who perished when their frigate was sunk nine days ago by a US submarine, local officials said.

The seamen were killed when the IRIS Dena was torpedoed on March 4 just off the coast of Sri Lanka, in an incident that extended the Middle East war to the Indian Ocean.

An Airbus A340 chartered by Iran “left a short while ago carrying the remains of the sailors,” an airport official at Mattala International Airport in the island’s south told AFP by telephone.

“The departure was delayed because 84 sealed boxes had to be loaded,” added the official who requested anonymity.

The destination of the flight was not disclosed.

The 32 sailors from the frigate who were rescued following the attack will remain in Sri Lanka for the time being, the Foreign Ministry said.

Of them, 22 have been discharged from the hospital and are being held at an air force base in the south of the island.

A second Iranian warship, the IRIS Bushehr, was allowed into Sri Lankan waters a day after Dena was sunk. Sri Lanka is providing safe harbour for the ship and its crew of 219.

Sri Lankan officials said they have not begun discussions on repatriating the Bushehr crew and those rescued from the Dena, but vowed that the sailors will be treated in line with Colombo’s international obligations.

Sri Lanka is currently hosting a total of 251 Iranian sailors.

– ‘Humanitarian considerations’ –

Crewmembers from the Bushehr are held at a navy camp just north of Colombo, while their ship has been taken over by Sri Lanka’s navy, which is trying to repair one of the two engines that were reportedly malfunctioning.

A third Iranian ship, IRIS Lavan, sailed past Sri Lanka and entered safe harbour in India’s southern port of Kochi on the same day the Dena was sunk. Lavan’s 183 crewmembers are in Indian custody.

Both Colombo and New Delhi have said they provided shelter to the Iranian sailors due to “humanitarian considerations” amid fears that they too could be killed in US attacks.

The ships had been taking part in a naval exercise organised by India off the coast of Visakhapatnam when the US and Israel began bombing Iran.

A local undertaker said the embalmed remains of the Iranian sailors were being sent back in sealed boxes.

The bodies, which were recovered from the Indian Ocean, were taken to Karapitiya Hospital in Galle, where autopsies were carried out.

A local magistrate ordered that the bodies be handed over to the Iranian embassy in Colombo for repatriation to the next of kin.

9 workers killed after truck falls into ravine in central Philippines

A truck veered off a downhill mountain road and plunged into a ravine in the central Philippines, killing nine workers on board, police said.

The workers were traveling back to their office after delivering crude oil and other supplies in a farming village in Bayawan city in Negros Oriental province when their truck overshot the road and fell into a 30-meter- (98-foot-) deep ravine, police said. It was loaded with five drums of crude oil.

The cause of the accident, which happened shortly before noon in good weather, was not immediately clear. The workers died while being brought to a hospital, provincial police chief Col. Timmar Alam said.

The Philippines has a disturbing record of deadly road accidents, which are often blamed on weak enforcement of traffic laws, reckless driving, rickety vehicles and inadequate road safety railings and signs.

Pakistan says 145 Indian-backed terrorists killed in Balochistan after deadly attacks

Pakistani police and military forces killed over a 100 “Indian-backed terrorists “ in counterterrorism operations across the restive southwestern province of Balochistan over the past 40 hours, government officials said on Sunday, a day after coordinated suicide and gun attacks killed 33 people, mostly civilians.

The raids began early Saturday at multiple locations across Balochistan, and left 18 civilians, including five women and three children, and 15 security personnel dead, authorities said.

Sarfraz Bugti, the provincial chief minister, told reporters in Quetta that troops and police officers responded swiftly, killing 145 members of “ Fitna al-Hindustan,” a phrase the government uses for the allegedly Indian-backed outlawed Baloch Liberation Army, or BLA. The number of militants killed over the past two days was the highest in decades, he said.

“The bodies of these 145 killed terrorists are in our custody, and some of them are Afghan nationals,” he said. Bugti claimed that the “Indian-backed terrorists” wanted to take hostages but failed to make it to the city center.

He spoke alongside senior government official Hamza Shafqat, who often oversees such operations against insurgents in the province, and praised the military, police and paramilitary forces for repelling the assaults.

Militant attacks erupted on Saturday in a resource-rich region where Pakistan is seeking to attract foreign investment in mining and minerals. In September 2025, a U.S. metals company signed a $500 million investment agreement with Pakistan, a month after the U.S. State Department designated BLA and its armed wing as a foreign terrorist organization.

Residents described scenes of panic after a suicide bombing killed several police officers on Saturday.

“(It) was a very scary day in the history of Quetta,” said Khan Muhammad, a local resident. “Armed men were roaming openly on the roads before security forces arrived.”

Bugti repeatedly accused India and Afghanistan of backing the assailants and said senior leaders of the BLA, which claimed responsibility for the latest attacks in Balochistan, were operating from Afghan territory. Both Kabul and New Delhi deny the allegations.

He said on Sunday Afghanistan’s Taliban had pledged under the 2020 Doha agreement not to allow Afghan soil to be used as a base for attacking other countries, but “unfortunately, the Afghan soil was still being used against Pakistan.”

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have persisted since early October when Pakistan carried out airstrikes on what it described as Pakistani Taliban hideouts inside Afghanistan, killing dozens of alleged insurgents.

Bugti said militants stormed the home of a Baloch laborer in Gwadar and killed five women and three children. He condemned the killings. He said the attackers had planned to seize hostages after storming government offices in Quetta’s high-security zone but were thwarted. “We were aware of their plans, and our forces were prepared,” he said.

The BLA is banned in Pakistan and has carried out numerous attacks in recent years, often targeting security forces, Chinese interests and infrastructure projects.

Authorities say the group has operated with support from the Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP. The TTP, a separate group, is allied with Afghanistan’s Taliban, who returned to power in August 2021.

Balochistan has long faced a separatist insurgency by ethnic Baloch groups seeking greater autonomy or independence from Pakistan’s central government. The BLA regularly targets Pakistani security forces and has also attacked civilians, including Chinese nationals among the thousands working on various projects in the province.

Mother and son killed in fatal accident in Galgamuwa

A three-wheeler that was transporting an injured person to hospital met with an accident this afternoon (21) along the Anuradhapura–Padeniya main road in Kurundankulama, Galgamuwa.

The three-wheeler, which was traveling towards Galgamuwa Hospital, collided head-on with a small lorry that was traveling towards Anuradhapura.

Another three-wheeler that was traveling behind the lorry also collided with the same lorry.

As a result of the accident, the driver of the three-wheeler that collided head-on and a woman who was traveling in the vehicle died at the scene. It is reported that the deceased were a mother and her son.

At the time of the accident, five people were traveling in the three-wheeler, and they have been admitted to the Galgamuwa Base Hospital.

Four people were traveling in the lorry, and none of them were injured, police stated.

According to police, damage was caused only to the front part of the three-wheeler.
