In what Haynes called a “controversial decision,” the S&P 500 Index Committee announced earlier this month that SpaceX will not be fast-tracked into the index, meaning the Elon Musk rocket maker must trade on the market for at least one year until it becomes eligible.

“That leaves us with the other benchmarks and their rebalancing schedule,” said Haynes.

The decision means greater significance for upcoming index events, as many shares will become freely tradable and need to be reflected in the benchmarks, he says.

SpaceX debuted at the Nasdaq at 11:46 a.m. ET on Friday. The stock surged more than 19% to close at $160.95 — its market cap exceeding $2 trillion.

In a special note to CNBC after Friday’s market close, Haynes wrote: “We take for granted that the infrastructure that supports the equity trading business always works. Today was a test of that infrastructure and in my opinion the industry passed the test.”

Americans have more money invested for retirement in passive S&P 500 Index funds than any other investment. The Vanguard and BlackRock S&P 500 ETFs alone manage nearly $2 trillion in assets, with the Vanguard ETF (VOO) recently passing the $1 trillion mark.

But unlike other mutual funds and ETFs, they won’t be managing SpaceX shares any time soon for retail investors who want to get a piece of the action in the stock after Friday’s mega-cap IPO, the biggest in the history of the market.

The index committee that oversees the rules for new stock inclusion in the S&P 500 Index said no to the biggest IPO in history, at least for the first year of its public market trading history.

Faced with a new era of mega-cap stocks — with OpenAI and Anthropic expected to follow the SpaceX IPO on Friday with huge offerings pushing them into the territory of the largest publicly traded companies in the U.S. on day one — the index manager was forced to make a call on whether to move up its standard 12-month waiting period for new stocks.

Unlike the S&P, index committees for the Nasdaq and Russell market benchmarks said they would update their rules. In the simplest terms, here’s what that means for core U.S. market index fund investors.

“If you want SpaceX, you’re not buying the S&P 500. You’re going to buy the NASDAQ 100 or the Russell 1000,” said Strategas Securities chief ETF strategist Todd Sohn on this week’s “ETF Edge.”

SpaceX shares began trading on the Nasdaq on Friday, initially rising to a value above $2 trillion. But if you hold an ETF like VOO, or BlackRock’s IVV, or the State Street SPDR S&P 500 Trust (SPY), you will be waiting for your SpaceX exposure until at least mid-2027.

The decision to leave in place the long window before SpaceX ever becomes part of the S&P 500 is not one that sat well with Peter Haynes, TD Securities’ head of index and market structure research, supported. “Personally, I didn’t agree with the decision,” he told “ETF Edge.”

Haynes said in the podcast portion of “ETF Edge” that it is “a controversial discussion,” but he added, “In my mind, it’s a natural extension of what exists already in global benchmarks.”

He pointed to the example of Saudi Aramco, which when it went public in 2019 was the largest IPO in history. At that time, both FTSE and MSCI created fast-track models for global benchmarks to add the stock to indexes after 5 to 10 days. “U.S. benchmarks were geared to follow the lead of global benchmarks,” he said. “They have a ‘Made in the USA’ stock that is sizable and belongs in benchmarks,” Haynes said.

“What this is doing is setting a precedent that [the] S&P will not add OpenAI and Anthropic when those IPOs happen,” Sohn said.

Sohn said the dueling decisions from the index providers could create an “index war” — specifically, performance dispersions between the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and other indexes.

Haynes added it could be longer than a year, “much longer,’ he said, before S&P 500 investors get exposure to SpaceX because the index committee also maintained its “profitability test” for stocks, which could exacerbate any performance issues between the S&P 500 and other popular U.S. benchmarks.

SpaceX was valued at $1.77 trillion valuation in the IPO, but it remains a high-risk investment with a net loss in the latest quarter of $4.28 billion. OpenAI and Anthropic are burning through cash at a significant rate and racking up losses while generating a substantial amount of revenue. They can be expected to face the same scrutiny from the S&P 500 that SpaceX just did.

For fund investors, there are other ways to get exposure to SpaceX as a complement to a core portfolio position like an S&P 500 fund. A handful of ETFs, mostly thematic space and tech innovation funds, have already been holding SpaceX through pre-IPO direct stakes. There has been a rush by investors into space stocks and space ETFs in the past few weeks. For example, Tema ETFs’ Space Innovators ETF (NASA) launched May 30 and has reached $2.6 billion in assets. It is one of the funds that offered direct access to SpaceX before the IPO.

Risk-oriented investors will also be able to get in on a new wave of leveraged ETFs just launching to offer up to 2x daily performance of SpaceX shares, bullish and bearish bets. ProShares will launch the Ultra SpaceX ETF (SPCF), seeking to get 2x the daily performance of the stock, next Monday. GraniteShares will launch two similar funds: GraniteShares 2x Long SpaceX Daily ETF (SPAL) and GraniteShares 2x Short SpaceX Daily ETF (SNK).

Sohn cautioned that these levered investments come with big boom-and bust cycles and are typically intended for day traders rather than long-term investors seeking diversification. Losses compound rapidly in these investments and expense ratios are relatively high since they are intended as trading vehicles rather than core holdings.

For most investors, the biggest takeaway is that the index they have long relied on to capture the biggest names in the U.S. market is sitting this one out. But expect ETF managers to stay creative with new ideas to meet investors where they aren’t — yet. “I would think some of the smaller independent [ETF] issuers will go to another index provider and they will create an ‘S&P+SpaceX … ‘large-cap+SpaceX’ … ‘+Anthropic.’ … There is nothing the ETF industry can’t do in terms of creativity,” Sohn said.

An avalanche of selling on Friday crushed the stock market, a dramatic reversal from record highs earlier in the week. Chip stocks nosedived in the final trading session of last week. There were pockets of weakness in tech ever since Club name Broadcom disappointed on earnings. However, the sell-off on Friday was next-level after a strong jobs report dashed hopes of a Federal Reserve interest rate cut and sent the 10-year bond yield soaring above 4.5%. The S & P 500 and Nasdaq plunged 2.6% and 4.2%, respectively, on Friday, making Tuesday’s record-high closes seem like a distant memory. The massive rotation out of tech into lagging sectors like health care and financials did produce some winners for us. For the week, Eli Lilly rose 2.4%, and Wells Fargo gained 5.7%. When it was all said and done, the weekly losses in the S & P 500 and Nasdaq mirrored Friday’s declines. The S & P 500 snapped a nine-week winning streak. Here is a closer look at what drove the market action last week, starting with the sky-high earnings expectations for Broadcom and two other Club tech names that went unmet. Hot stocks into earnings It started on Wednesday, when Palo Alto Networks shares sank despite delivering a strong beat-and-raise quarter the prior evening. The stock came into the print hot after setting a new record high on Monday. When management reiterated its long-term financial outlook, instead of raising it, the sellers drove the stock down by 5.6%. It didn’t change our view on Palo Alto. We love that management finally showed Wall Street that AI can accelerate its business. That is huge considering how badly cyber stocks had sold off earlier in the year on what Jim Cramer said all along were unfounded disruption concerns. For the week, Palo Alto fell 3.4%. A similar story played out when CrowdStrike reported better-than-expected earnings and forward guidance on Wednesday evening. The stock was down more than 10% during Thursday’s session but closed down less than 4%. Like Palo Alto, CrowdStrike’s weakness can be pinned on falling short of lofty expectations amid near-record-high shares. We were not discouraged . CrowdStrike also showed us that AI is a boon to business. CEO George Kurtz said so himself on the conference call. Unfortunately, CrowdStrike sold off further on Friday, losing more than 8% for the week. But the biggest downer was Broadcom, whose stock fell 12.6% after earnings on Thursday. The price action here might be a little more understandable because it wasn’t just a failure to issue even stronger guidance; it was also a lower-than-expected revenue number in the reported quarter. The AI-related parts of its business were strong. We were also encouraged by management’s forecasting of continued AI semiconductor revenue growth in fiscal 2028. That was not nearly enough to save the stock. Selling continued on Friday, and Broadcom was our worst stock of the week, down 13.7%. The weekly losses in Intel, our newest chip stock, were neck-and-neck with Broadcom. Intel lost 13.5% on the week. We started a position on Wednesday and bought more shares into the decline on Friday. We got into Intel because of its strong central processing unit (CPU) business, which is well-positioned for the agentic AI era. In data center server racks, the ratio of CPUs to GPUs is narrowing. GPUs are graphics processing units, with Nvidia dominating the market. Kingmaker Nvidia Nvidia was down a much more modest 2.9% for the week. At the influential Computex conference in Taiwan on Monday, CEO Jensen Huang announced that Nvidia is entering the personal computer market, with chips based on Arm Holdings’ architecture. Shares of Arm , which is also a Club name, soared 15.7% on the news. However, it was not immune to the selling in chip stocks. Arm shares lost 3% on the week. Arm has been an incredible position for us; shares are still up 213% year to date. There was one big chip-stock winner amid all the carnage. Shares of Marvell Technology gained more than 28% last week. On Tuesday, Jensen predicted that Marvell would be the “next trillion-dollar company.” Before those comments, which sent the stock rocketing higher, Marvell had a market cap of nearly $200 billion. Jim said the sharp rally in Marvell shares was concerning. “These are big moves, and they’re not based on anything other than one person saying it.” Still, Jim remains bullish on Marvell, which is not a Club stock. IPOs and stock sales The other big story of the week, which will carry into next week and beyond, is the deluge of stock expected to hit the market from three massive IPOs. The first one is SpaceX, which is set to start trading this coming Friday. Elon Musk’s satellite, rocket, and AI company disclosed plans last Wednesday to sell 555.6 million shares at a fixed price of $135 each, raising roughly $75 billion at a $1.8 trillion market value. SpaceX is just one of several high-profile IPOs. Anthropic, known for its family of large language models called Claude, confidentially filed its IPO prospectus on Monday. The deal could create a historic share sale for investors ready to jump into AI, as Anthropic recently closed a funding round that valued the startup at $965 billion. The news put Anthropic ahead of rival OpenAI, which is readying plans for a public market listing. The startup was recently valued at a $852 billion post-money. Companies aren’t just raising capital through IPOs. Last week, Alphabet announced plans to sell $85 billion in stock to secure more funding for its AI buildout. Shares of the Google parent fell almost 4% Tuesday on the news and lost 3% on the week. Investors don’t typically like it when companies sell stock to fund investments because it can dilute their existing stakes. The move raised questions about whether other megacaps will do the same. Club stock Meta Platforms sank on Friday after the Financial Times reported that the company could potentially raise tens of billions of dollars in a stock offering to help fund its AI push. Meta lost more than 6% for the week. Jim issued a warning about all these deals, saying that a massive increase in stock supply could create a near-term headwind for the market. The string of big tech IPOs and stock sales could prompt investors to sell existing holdings to raise cash and buy shares elsewhere. “Bull markets can be killed by business conditions or interest rates or geopolitical turmoil, but the thing that most easily leads them to the slaughterhouse is an excess of new supply,” he said during “Mad Money” on Wednesday. “Like any market, when supply outstrips demand, prices go right down.” Jim continued, “I get concerned that stock supply will overwhelm investor demand. Right now, looking at the calendar, I don’t know how we are going to afford all of these deals without taking the market lower. It’s too much capital at once.” (See here for a full list of the stocks in Jim Cramer’s Charitable Trust.) Prediction market traders think there’s more fuel left in the tank.

While the benchmark is already up more than 16% from its March 30 lows, traders on Kalshi think the broad index has a 59% chance of breaching 8,000 this year. That’s an 8% gain from current trading levels, and the index only crossed 7,000 for the first time in January.

It’s not just traders on prediction markets getting more bullish. RBC hiked its 12-month-forward price target for the index to 7,900 in a Friday note. Head of U.S. equity strategy Lori Calvasina wrote that the average and median of the five models used by the bank to calculate its estimate is 8,100 — implying there may be even upside to her forecast.

Stocks have shrugged off what appears to be a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a critical passageway for the global supply of crude oil — and a potential re-escalation of the U.S.-Iran war.

Investors instead have embraced an artificial intelligence buildout that appears to be firing on all cylinders. It’s boosting stocks of the companies involved, driving much of the earnings growth the market has been celebrating and pushing GDP higher through increased private investment.

“The AI tech trade has just become so powerful that it’s superseded anything else,” said Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer at OnePoint BFG Wealth Partners. He added that no one wants to miss out on a potential rally if the U.S. and Iran do finalize a peace agreement — even though stocks have rallied so much since the ceasefire announcement. “Momentum has a life of its own.”

Truist Wealth chief investment officer Keith Lerner said that the market’s sharp move higher needs to be put in the context of what happened before the war, when major U.S. indexes traded in a narrow range from late October until March. Current levels in comparison to levels the S&P first hit in October are closer to around 7% higher.

Apple is set to report earnings after the bell on Thursday, just over a week since the company announced that longtime CEO Tim Cook will be leaving in September and replaced by senior vice president of hardware engineering John Ternus.

Traders think it’s almost certain that the company will mention on its earnings call China and tariffs, placing odds at 98% and 96%, respectively. But there are other topics that traders are more divided on.

But traders are more uncertain on other topics.

Google’s artificial intelligence model Gemini has a 27% chance to get mentioned. Apple has a deal with Google to implement the model into its Apple Intelligence features, but Apple is also widely viewed by Wall Street as the biggest tech laggard on AI development.

Meanwhile, traders mostly think the company won’t chat about glasses, assigning only a 24% chance. Apple has reportedly been working on designing an AI-supported smart glasses product as a new wearable technology for quite some time, but has yet to make a formal announcement of the development.

Traders also give just a 9% chance the company says fold, folding or foldable. That’s after a report this month that the timeline for the development Apple’s proposed foldable iPhone is delayed. However, a Bloomberg report indicates a planned fall 2026 launch is still on schedule.

Disclosure: CNBC and Kalshi have a commercial relationship that includes a CNBC minority investment.

Oracle, up 32% week-to-date, is on track for its best week since October 1999. The company expanded an artificial intelligence data center power deal with Bloom Energy on Monday, contracting 1.2 gigawatts of capacity from Bloom. Oracle was issued a warrant to purchase $400 million of Bloom shares last week.

AMD is up 13% this week and hit an all-time high on Thursday, climbing over 40% during a run of 12-consecutive days of gains, its longest streak in over 20 years.

Microsoft is up more than 14% this week, pacing for its best week since April 2015. Microsoft’s rebound comes after the software giant wrapped its worst quarter since 2008 in March, where it lost almost a quarter of its value.

Tesla is also having a strong week, up 14% as CEO Elon Musk said Wednesday that the company hit a key milestone on its AI5 chip.

The iShares Expanded Tech-Software ETF (IGV) is up about 15% week-to-date, pacing for its best week since October 2001. Anything better than 15.5% would mark its best week ever.

The SPDR Info Tech Fund (XLK) also hit an all-time high this morning for the first time since October 2025. The fund is on pace for its 13th straight day of gains, and its best week since April 2025.

The software sector has had a rough year due to AI disruption fears. Hopes for a lasting peace deal between the U.S. and Iran have fueled the sector’s recent rebound.

So far this year, the IGV is down about 20%.

There’s a love affair on Wall Street between investors and streaming.

The romance started about a decade ago when consumers began cutting the cord with cable TV bundles en masse in favor of direct-to-consumer streaming apps. However, where investors were once enamored with subscriber growth, rewarding companies that were able to expand their consumer reach, their attentions have now shifted toward profitability.

To meet this new expectation, streaming companies have raised the prices of their services, cracked down on password sharing and delved into the ad-supported space. It’s also sparked the likes of Paramount Skydance to seek out the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery for its extensive library of content and top-tier streaming service, HBO Max, in order to compete.

While streaming continues to drive media stocks, especially around quarterly earnings, it’s not clear when — or if — it will start driving profits for the smaller players.

“Is streaming a good business?” Robert Fishman, senior research analyst at MoffettNathanson, posed in a March research note to investors. “We raised and debated this critical question over the years leading us to determine the answer is yes, albeit only for those services with sufficient scale.”

For legacy media companies, streaming has yet to fully supplant the profits and advertising revenue of linear TV. Of course, both of those metrics have been in decline for companies like WBD, Paramount and its peers.

In response, streamers have largely raised subscription prices for consumers, begging the question of where the ceiling is for streaming costs. Between higher fees and the sheer number of services needed in order to have access to all content, consumers are starting to balk.

Still, with these continuous linear TV declines, investors cling to streaming as a bright spot, especially for companies that have made it profitable. Disney has been among the steadiest of legacy media companies when it comes to a profitable streaming business, but Paramount and WBD have seen profitable quarters and Comcast’s Peacock is narrowing losses.

“With streaming no one’s reporting sub numbers anymore, because now it’s all about profitability,” Doug Creutz, senior research analyst at Cowen, told CNBC. “And that’s the metric by which these these businesses are being judged. It’s, you know, can you get to 10% operating profit? Can you get 15%? Can you get 20%? Can you get 25%? Can you get to where Netflix is?”

Netflix reported operating margin of 29.5% in 2025. Meanwhile, Disney, for example, guided investors to an operating margin for its direct-to-consumer business of 10% in fiscal 2026.

“This is the big question mark that all these companies face,” Creutz added. “You had a linear business that was really profitable and it’s gone away, and is the streaming business ever going to be that profitable?”

‘No streamer comes close to Netflix’

The leader in the space is uncontested.

Netflix was early to the streaming game, scooping up a number of cord cutters with its significantly cheaper online alternative to pricey cable packages. The streaming giant has since grown its library through deals with Hollywood’s studios and by wading into original content.

Being among the first to the space meant a massive audience for Netflix. In January, the company announced it had reached 325 million global paid customers.

“As we think about global scale, the ability to spread the content spend and other fixed streaming costs over a much larger subscriber base leads to a more meaningful streaming profit opportunity,” Fishman wrote. “On that front, no streamer comes close to Netflix.”

In the eyes of Wall Street, Netflix is the gold standard. But competition for viewership is growing and now includes YouTube, TikTok, other social media as well as live events and gaming — all jockeying for consumers’ time.

And even the industry leader isn’t immune to the challenges of the streaming business.

In 2022 Netflix reported its first quarterly subscriber loss in more than a decade, dragging down its stock price. The media giant responded with a series of changes to its business model, most notably the addition of a cheaper, ad-supported tier.

Netflix no longer reports quarterly subscriber counts, and Disney has since followed suit as the industry refocuses on profits. (Disney also stopped breaking down the revenue and operating income for other parts of its entertainment business, including linear TV.)

But analysts agree that the comparison of Netflix to traditional media players isn’t exactly apples to apples. After all, Disney, Comcast, Warner Bros. and Paramount aren’t just streamers. These companies still have linear TV businesses as well as robust theatrical divisions. And some have other, even more lucrative pieces of their empires, including merchandising, theme parks, hotels and cruise lines.

It’s only recently that Netflix has branched out from its content-only strategy to launch its own merchandising and live event businesses.

“They don’t have the decline of legacy media to offset,” Alicia Reese, senior vice president of equity research at Wedbush. “They don’t have theatrical to worry about.”

The result is traditional media companies that are often sized up against what a nontraditional tech company has been able to build in the streaming arena.

How much is too much?

Both Netflix and traditional media companies have raised prices for their streaming platforms over the last year in an effort to boost revenue and justify high content spending.

While consumers groan at the sight of these price increases and at being locked out of accounts they previously borrowed due to password sharing crackdowns, Wall Street applauds such measures.

“We think Netflix is positioning for substantial growth in global advertising, while its latest price increases could provide a meaningful boost to profitability this year,” Reese wrote in a research note published Friday.

Netflix is scheduled to report its quarterly earnings on Thursday, weeks after announcing yet another a price increase across its subscription tiers, including its cheapest plan with ads.

“While Netflix has consistently raised pricing across tiers, our analysis suggests U.S. revenue per streaming hour is one of the lowest among its peers, suggesting further pricing runway going forward,” Matthew Condon, analyst at Citizens, wrote in a research note published last month.

The majority of streamers offer several plans, ranging from a cheaper ad-supported option to an ad-free standard service and then a higher-priced and higher-quality version.

To ease some price burden, streamers have also started to offer bundles of their services at a discount, further suggesting they could be finding customers’ limits.

The difference in pricing of the ad-supported and ad-free tiers varies from streamer to streamer, but typically an ad-supported service ranges from $7.99 a month to $12.99 a month and premium subscriptions range from $13.99 a month to $26.99 a month. These prices are often set based on how much content is available in a given library and how much that streamer is paying to produce and license content for its service.

“I think you’re going to continue to see price increases similar to what Netflix has been doing,” Creutz said. “We’re going to find out how sticky services are if price continues to go up.”

Ads or no ads? That’s the question.

Advertising has long been part of the TV business model. Even as cable TV bundle prices soared before the advent of streaming, advertising provided a cushion.

However, for streaming, the push for consumers to opt into ad-supported plans has more recently ramped up across the ecosystem.

Netflix, which had long resisted ads, introduced its ad-tier in November 2022 and shortly after eliminated its cheapest basic plan, pushing customers toward watching with commercials.

Former Disney CEO Bob Iger said in prior investor calls that his company is trying to steer customers toward ad-supported plans. And by 2023’s upfront presentation, the industry’s annual pitch to advertisers, streaming took center stage.

The economics bear out: Netflix reported 2025 ad revenue exceeded $1.5 billion, or about 3% of total full-year revenue. That’s expected to double this year.

“We’re making good progress, and the opportunity ahead of us is massive,” Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said during the company’s earnings call in January.

In post-earnings notes after that report, analysts agreed that while Netflix’s ad revenue growth was slow to start, having more insight from the company helped understand how it’s incorporated into the business.

While legacy media peers were late to the streaming game by comparison, they were often faster than Netflix to institute ad plans. Disney’s Hulu, Paramount+ and Peacock offered these options from their inception. HBO Max launched its ads plan in 2021, while Disney+ joined Netflix in late 2022.

That could help speed up the on-ramp to meaningful streaming profits.

In general, though, the advertising landscape has been tricky to measure for media companies. Linear TV ad revenue have been on a precipitous decline in recent years. Tech companies like Google and Meta’s Facebook continue to gobble up the lion’s share of ad dollars. And while streaming has been a key source of ad revenue growth for media companies, it has yet to stack up to what traditional TV once garnered.

Apple is casting a new line to reel more users into its prized ecosystem, a money-printing machine with fresh hardware as the lure and services as the hook. The tech giant announced its most affordable laptop in history last month with the rollout of the MacBook Neo. With a starting price of $599, the Neo is almost half the cost of some of Apple’s higher-end laptops. Apple’s new MacBook Air 13-inch M5 model starts at $1,099, whereas the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max starts at $3,899. All three laptops were unveiled during a three-day hardware blitz from management in March. The Neo is Apple’s most obvious attempt to challenge budget laptops like Google’s Chromebook models and entry-level Windows machines, which can start around $300 or less. “[Neo] is a much more compelling offering at the price point for what you’re getting compared to a similar spec PC,” Chandler Willison, analyst at research firm M Science, told CNBC in an interview. “That’s really the main advantage there.” While a little more expensive, the Neo is an attractive option for cash-constrained consumers who need to do simple tasks such as writing, browsing the web, or using artificial intelligence chatbots. College students, for example, are the perfect market. Apple is even catering to them through a $100 education discount. This strategy is nothing new to Apple. Management has spent decades proving the same point to investors: Enter an existing category, make a better mousetrap, and the sales and stock appreciation will come. The strategy also includes getting more and more people to use Apple services, which have higher margins than devices and create recurring revenue. As of January, Apple had an installed base of more than 2.5 billion devices. Building on the momentum of the iPod and iTunes music store, Apple launched the iPhone in 2007. It had no physical keyboard. At the time, it was a high-status and niche product, entering a market dominated by the less expensive, ubiquitous BlackBerry. A year later, Apple launched its App Store alongside the rollout of the faster iPhone 3G with built-in GPS, opening the floodgates for new users into its ecosystem. While the initial move into smartphones posed a risk to Apple’s device margins, the gamble paid off through what would become a massive industry-altering phenomenon. A similar pattern emerged in 2016, with the controversial removal of the iPhone headphone jack. Just like the no-keyboard iPhone, the announcement initially frustrated some users . But it was a wise bet that wireless headphones would be essential to the future of the smartphone. Apple was right about that, too. In 2018, Apple saw a huge increase in AirPod sales after a lackluster launch just two years before. Management’s move accelerated revenues within Apple’s wearables segment, and helped cement the company’s dominance in the wireless headphones market. AAPL YTD mountain Apple (AAPL) year to date performance The new MacBook Neo aims to be the latest success in Apple’s playbook. The upside in the Neo isn’t really about a near-term boost in device sales. After all, Apple’s product gross margin is expected to decline from last year’s high 30s to low 30s, according to Seaport Research. Instead, it’s about attracting more users into its ecosystem for longer periods of time. That’s why Apple, according to JPMorgan’s Samik Chatterjee, is trying to capture the student demographic “very early on.” The idea being that once buyers graduate, move into their professional careers and start earning more, they’re already loyal Apple users. They, in turn, will keep using Apple’s services and upgrade their devices for years to come. Chatterjee added, “So, you’ve locked in a consumer much earlier in the life cycle, which basically negates the opportunity of competition to come in.” The more long-term users of Apple products means more monetization for the company’s ever-growing services division, which includes income from Apple Music, Apple TV, iCloud, App Store, and licensing deals. The segment has become increasingly crucial to Apple’s bottom line as it contains stickier, ongoing revenue streams that rely on Apple’s ecosystem as a whole rather than just device sales. Bank of America described the Neo launch as “a meaningful tailwind” to Mac revenue. “We see Neo driving meaningful adoption for first-time Mac owners with a distinct customer base relative to the Air and Pro models,” the analysts wrote in a Monday note. It’s a massive untapped opportunity for Apple, according to BofA, which estimates the total addressable market for the Neo could be $32 billion in 2026. The analysts said that if Apple can grab around 10% of that market, and do so with a 19% operating margin this year, the company could increase its earnings per share (EPS) by 3 cents. To be sure, that’s incremental and not a slam dunk. By selling the Neo for $599 and up, Apple is locking itself into a pricing at a time when manufacturers get hit with soaring memory costs. The explosive growth of artificial intelligence has created an insatiable demand for memory, with hyperscalers funneling billions into AI infrastructure. This shift has diverted manufacturing capacity away from consumer electronics, leaving a limited number of suppliers to manage a tightened market where prices have skyrocketed. In fact, data from research firm Gartner forecasts that PC prices will increase by 17% by the end of 2026, compared to 2025 levels. These higher memory costs are also projected to drive worldwide PC shipments down 10.4% over the same period. Thus far, Apple has been able to manage these dynamics because of its long-term contracts with suppliers, which allowed the firm to lock in lower prices. Plus, the company’s sheer scale ensures priority supply and premium pricing. For suppliers, Apple’s predictable hardware cycles offer a level of financial security that smaller, more volatile tech companies simply cannot match. “The launch of MacBook Neo shows you that they’re in a much more comfortable position of memory than the average OME [original equipment manufacturer] out there. And hence, it’s providing the flexibility to focus on growth at this time or market share gain at this time when others are more concerned about maintaining margins,” JPMorgan’s Chatterjee said. Seaport shared similar sentiments. “We think the company can make up for some of this lost ground through its share gains.” The analysts added, “Unlike most of its competitors, Apple has a solid services and subscription business. Many of the new users it will gain this year are likely to subscribe to Apple’s high-margin services.” Bottom line The MacBook Neo has created yet another opportunity for Apple to attract new users into its sticky ecosystem while also boosting revenue for its high-margin services business. It’s a welcome development as the services unit has been a big reason why we love this stock. It’s also another example of how time and time again, Apple’s not afraid to take a risk if it means delivering in the long-term for its shareholders. Just look at all the times naysayers have doubted it , and the stock still comes back. We also see it as a tradeoff between a potential near-term hit in Apple’s product gross margins and the value of a lifelong Apple user. Apple is slated to report second-quarter earnings on April 30. Sales for the MacBook Neo won’t matter much as the product was available for purchase only around two weeks before the quarter ended. Still, any color from management on early demand signs will be helpful. We’re sticking by our “own, don’t trade” stance. The Club has a $300 per share price target, implying nearly 18.5% upside from Wednesday’s close. Jim Cramer said Thursday that he thinks Apple stock will go higher. Jim was also pleased to see reports of trouble with Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone were shot down .
