CUPERTINO, Calif. — Nasdaq brought its market open festivities to Apple’s sprawling Silicon Valley headquarters on Tuesday, the eve of the company’s 50th birthday.

From a desk inside Apple Park, the ring-shaped campus that Steve Jobs spent his last years helping design, Tim Cook rang the opening bell and, in the process, ushered in the iPhone maker’s second half-century.

It was a celebratory occasion, but one arriving at a pivotal point for an iconic American company that faces major challenges today and in the years ahead as the technology industry gets swept up by artificial intelligence.

Prior to the AI boom, which started with the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022, Apple was able to win by dominating the consumer device market and adding its Siri voice assistant across its product portfolio.

The pitch has always been simple: Pay a premium for a device, and trust that what happens on it stays yours, whether it’s messages, photos or notes. Personal data isn’t fuel for an advertising engine.

Two of Apple’s megacap tech peers took the opposite approach. Google and Meta are the giants of digital advertising, giving away their key services for free and making tens of billions of dollars a year in profit by targeting users with promotions.

Apple’s principle came from Jobs, its co-founder and longtime CEO. Cook, his successor, has been preaching it since becoming CEO in 2011, shortly before Jobs’ death. For much of Apple’s 50-year history, it’s been gospel in Cupertino.

That’s why Apple’s latest move feels so out of character.

In January, Apple struck a multiyear deal to use Google’s Gemini AI as part of a rebooted Siri. Google has already been paying in the range of $20 billion a year to be the default search engine on the iPhone. In AI, that relationship flips: Apple becomes the one paying for the underlying intelligence by licensing Google’s technology.

Money isn’t the main issue — Apple recorded net cash of $54 billion in the latest quarter and returned $32 billion to shareholders, mostly through buybacks. Rather, the concern, according to Asymco analyst Horace Dediu, is what the arrangement with Google means for user data and whether the search company uses it to bolster its algorithms.

“That’s where the wall has to be,” Dediu said. “That they don’t give that information to Google, and Google doesn’t get smarter and improve its core business because Apple is sharing information with them.” He added that, “To the extent that the intelligence improves, that should stay within Apple.”

Apple declined to make anyone available for this story, but CNBC spoke with former employees and people who spent decades studying the business. The general sentiment is that Apple is at a crossroads, caught between the ethos that shaped the company and a technological shift that’s forcing it to compete on unfamiliar ground.

Apple is in this quandary in part because, compared to its tech peers, the company has been slow to AI. The long-awaited AI update to Siri has faced delays, though Apple says it’s still coming by year-end. In 2024, the company launched Apple Intelligence, which includes image generators, text rewriters, the ability to summarize push notifications and an integration with ChatGPT. Consumer response has been mixed.

Where Apple has really bucked the trend is in keeping capital expenditures in check, rather than following the path of Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta, which are collectively committing hundreds of billions of dollars a year to new AI infrastructure so they can support cutting-edge models and workloads.

As rivals were building giant model businesses, involving training through scraping of information and data, Apple steered clear, a decision that many in the industry say left the company at a disadvantage in generative AI.

Cook has called privacy a “fundamental human right” for years. In an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America” in mid-March, he reiterated that Apple does as much processing as possible on the device. When necessary, Apple uses what it calls Private Cloud Compute, which is essentially a secure extension of the device in the cloud.

Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management says Apple’s leadership misread the market.

“It comes down to a failure to recognize where the world was going and the speed things were happening,” he said, leaving the company now at a “fork in the road” when it comes to the long-term relevance of its products.

The challenge, Munster said, is in “powering an AI digital assistant.” If Apple doesn’t solve that, he warned, somebody else will, a development that could eat away at Apple’s control over the future.

Siri should have given Apple a head start. It launched in October 2011, a day after Jobs’ death. It would be years before Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant hit the market. But the product stagnated.

Apple “basically blew a five-year lead” said Walt Mossberg, a former Wall Street Journal columnist who long chronicled Apple.

Dag Kittlaus, Siri’s co-founder, left Apple after Jobs died, telling CNBC recently, “I didn’t want to work without him.”

Kittlaus said that Siri kept improving on the technical side, particularly in speech recognition. But without Jobs’ instincts and product vision, the company never really expanded Siri’s capabilities, he said.

“There are no further technical barriers to any part of the Siri vision that we had from the old days,” Kittlaus said. “We would kill to have the technology back then that exists now.”

Adam Cheyer, who created Siri alongside Kittlaus, said the original vision was far more ambitious than what shipped. The idea was to create a system that could both answer questions and take action, eventually supporting a broader ecosystem that could be used by outside businesses, similar to the App Store. He said the challenge was combining “knowing and doing” in a single system.

The first company that can do that with “the right experience” will be “the dominant technology company for this next AI age,” Cheyer said. “And I think Apple can still play there.”

Today, AI is a cloud business. The models behind ChatGPT, Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude are too big to run on a phone. But models are shrinking. Within a few years, hefty workloads will run on a chip inside the phone.

That’s Apple’s bet, and the company has been integrating AI-capable silicon into its devices since 2017. When AI moves onto the device, the thinking goes, Apple’s privacy problem starts to solve itself. User queries all get processed locally, never touching a cloud server.

Dediu says it follows a historical pattern of computing moving from the center to the edge, from mainframes to PCs to phones.

Tony Fadell, who built the iPod and the first three iPhones before co-founding Nest and selling it to Google, said early signs of the computing shift are already visible. As more people experiment with personal AI agents, some are running the infrastructure themselves, often on devices like a Mac Mini at home.

The Google partnership could be the bridge for Apple, Kittlaus said.

“People get motivated when they see a path to victory,” he said. “I think that is the moment.”

The OpenAI challenge

As AI moves to the edge, the question for Apple is whether the device it’s spent the past two decades perfecting remains the center of computing.

Last year, OpenAI bought Jony Ive’s design firm, io, for $6.4 billion and charged the former Apple design chief with building something as consequential for the AI era as the iPhone was for the move to mobile.

“That’s an amazingly big ask and amazingly big vision,” said John Sculley, who was Apple’s CEO from 1983 to 1993, in an interview. “You can’t underestimate someone as brilliant as Jony Ive.”

Ive, who designed the iPod, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, among other gadgets, is reportedly developing a family of screenless devices for Sam Altman’s company.

Dediu said that’s the scenario Apple should worry about — not a better device, but a simpler one that doesn’t need a screen. If the AI interface turns out to be something people wear rather than hold, Apple’s advantage in visual design stops mattering.

It’s not an approach that’s worked yet.

Ken Kocienda, who spent 15 years at Apple and invented keyboard autocorrect for the original iPhone, left in 2017 and joined AI hardware startup Humane a few years later. Humane attempted a screenless, AI-native device, but the effort failed.

Kocienda said the idea may still prove to be right, just too early. Fadell is less concerned.

“These pins, pens, all these pendants — I think they’re all accessories to the phone,” he said. “You’re going to see a federation of devices … and they’ll all be AI-enabled, as opposed to removing devices from your life.”

If the future of AI hardware revolves around the phone, Apple may be poised to lead again, with a next chapter shaped by the same strengths that built the company.

That was the backdrop at Apple Park before dawn on Tuesday. As employees and Cook gathered on the lawn, the grass still held the night’s rain.

The sky cleared just as Nasdaq’s opening anthem rolled across the yard, and Cook stepped forward to ring the bell. The whole scene felt almost impossibly controlled, as if even the weather had deferred to Apple’s choreography.

Everything came together just in time to show Wall Street, and the company is betting its Siri refresh will do the same.

The anniversary celebration was capped by a performance from Paul McCartney, another flourish in a production designed to project confidence in the path forward as Wall Street waits expectantly for Apple’s AI comeback.

The high-profile announcement, which was far more public than a typical “alpha” test of a new format, presented a massive opportunity.

Three of the world’s largest ad agencies are part of the testing program, including WPP, Omnicom and Dentsu.

So far, the test is moving too slowly to meet the hype, according to multiple ad industry sources who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss the details.

The sources told CNBC that OpenAI’s test program is frustrating many of its partners because of the conservative rollout.

The ad commitments required to participate in the test were unusually high for this type of experiment.

Some brands dedicated between $200,000 and $250,000 to the test, which is double a typical experimental ad commitment. For some brands, this money came from funds dedicated to innovative new formats, while others drew from search or social ad budgets.

With the pilot program running through the end of March, some of the sources told CNBC they are concerned with the slow pace of rollout, which means their full budget commitments are unlikely to be spent by the end of the month.

While any excess will be returned, the budget was already committed to the trial and so can’t be deployed elsewhere during the quarter. Advertisers also won’t get the volume of insights they were hoping for.

Omnicom did not return requests for comment. WPP declined to comment.

OpenAI told CNBC that the slow rollout of the ads program was intentional.

“We’re in the early testing phase of ads in ChatGPT, and the goal right now is to learn and refine the experience for consumers before expanding it more broadly,” the company said. “We’re encouraged by early signals from users and participating brands, and continue to see strong interest from advertisers.”

Japanese ad giant Dentsu told CNBC it set realistic expectations for its clients going into the test, pulling from a pool of funds dedicated to testing and innovation.

Dentsu EVP and Head of Paid Search Meredith Spitz said it is early on, but the firm is “eager to partner with OpenAI to further test, learn and evolve the offering.”

“So far, ad delivery is quickly building momentum, with volume increasing week-over-week as the environment scales,” she said.

Despite some early frustrations, sources said they have been encouraged by OpenAI’s response to feedback and how quickly the company has been able to make changes, and more recently, ramp up.

The sources told CNBC that the caution is a good sign of OpenAI’s commitment to building a sustainable and successful ad business. But the frustration stems from the enthusiasm for this new category, and an eagerness to put budgets into ChatGPT ads and get more insights into how they’re working.

According to recent data from research firm Sensor Tower, the number of ads served halfway through March increased about 600% from the first of the month.

Sensor Tower estimated that ads have now rolled out to about 5% of ChatGPT mobile users, up from 1% at the beginning of March.

The opportunity for OpenAI and the AI ads landscape remains massive.

A recent Truist analyst note called 2026 an “inflection year” for large language model-powered ads.

“Within the next several years, we would expect LLM-powered ad channels to become one of the most important pillars of the digital ad industry alongside Search, Social, and Retail Media,” the analysts wrote.

Truist estimates OpenAI will generate under $1 billion in ad revenue this year, with that figure growing to over $30 billion by 2030.

Dentsu noted that the most value of these new ads can come from brands looking to reach ChatGPT users with very specific queries.

“Overall, we’re seeing the continued importance of aligning ad relevance with user intent, reinforcing a broader pattern in conversational discovery; that when user intent is precise, brands with focused offerings and tailored messaging are best positioned to deliver relevance and value in the moment,” Spitz said.

While ads embedded in AI search are seen as having massive potential by ad industry insiders and analysts alike, Anthropic is wary.

The AI giant last month took shots at OpenAI in a Super Bowl commercial, criticizing its move into ads and proclaiming that Anthropic’s own platform will remain ad-free. Perplexity recently removed ads from its platform after beginning testing in 2024.

Google, meanwhile, has not yet announced official plans for ads within Gemini, but the company has signaled in recent reports that it is not ruling them out.

The company already has plenty of ad inventory around the AI overview results that appear alongside Google search results.

The question is whether OpenAI’s slow rollout will prove an advantage for industry leader Google, which will sell an estimated $252 billion in search ads this year, according to Truist.

Companies more tightly tethered to the card industry, like Visa, Mastercard and American Express, also fell. Capital One, whose loan book is mostly from credit cards, sank nearly 7%.

Trump proposed a one-year cap on interest rates starting Jan. 20. While it’s unclear exactly how that would be enforced, the industry’s message is clear: the plan would bring unintended consequences for consumers and the American economy.

The move would make large swaths of the credit card industry unprofitable, especially tied to customers with less-than-ideal credit profiles, according to banks and analysts. The average credit card rate nationally is 19.7% as of this month, according to a weekly survey from Bankrate.com, while rates for subprime borrowers and store-specific cards are even higher.

Rather than offer loss-making products to consumers, the industry would simply stop offering access to customers with subprime credit, along with a slew of other changes around card programs including scaling back rewards, insiders say. Consumers would either spend less or rely on other forms of unsecured debt, many of which carry even higher interest rates than credit cards, they say.

“We cannot offer products at a loss; there’s no scenario where we would take our entire portfolio to 10%,” said a person with knowledge of the operations of a large bank, who asked to remain anonymous to speak candidly. “It’s not a stretch to suggest this will very quickly tank the economy.”

The drag on the economy from less spending could be more acute for airlines, retailers and restaurants, which would have to make up for lost card revenues by “potentially raising pricing” on their services, KBW analysts led by Sanjay Sakhrani and Chris McGratty said in a Jan. 11 research note.

The industry’s trade groups issued a joint statement late Friday making their case.

“Evidence shows that a 10% interest rate cap would reduce credit availability and be devastating for millions of American families and small business owners who rely on and value their credit cards, the very consumers this proposal intends to help,” the trade groups said.

‘Opening bid?’

This isn’t the industry’s first time contending with possible price controls. A bill was introduced last year from Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont that would limit card APRs at 10% for five years.

While that bill is stalled in Congress, a study released Monday on possible impacts from the Electronic Payments Coalition found that a 10% cap on rates would mean that card issuers would close accounts for nearly 90% of current users, or 175 million Americans. Most accounts with credit scores below 740 would be shut, the study claimed.

Complicating matters, it is unclear to bankers how Trump’s rate cap would take place.

The most straightforward approach, through legislation in Congress, isn’t possible by the proposed Jan. 20 start date, said Tobin Marcus, head of U.S. policy at Wolfe Research.

Other enforcement means, through banking regulators including the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, are also possible. But the Trump administration has repeatedly tried to shutter that agency, and the industry has had a successful run at defeating CFPB rules in federal courts.

“I’m not aware of an authority that they can use to do this unilaterally in any kind of a sweeping way,” Marcus said. “As far as I can tell, telling them they have until Jan. 20 is an attempt to create pressure and have them do it voluntarily.”

While the exact mechanism that Trump can use to enforce an interest rate cap is unclear, card issuers now face the risk that rates could be headed lower in some form of negotiated compromise with the government, KBW’s McGratty said in an interview.

“Is 10% an opening bid?” he said. “There’s a long distance between 10% and what companies charge today.”

Americans had a collective $1.23 trillion in credit card debt as of the third quarter last year, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Balances have been climbing as many Americans spent down the savings they’d built up during the global coronavirus pandemic.

Figma’s sensational IPO last week resurrected longstanding debates about IPO pricing and first day pops—an unsurprising reaction to the newly listed stock’s 333% surge in its first days of trading. As investors dissect the offering (and as Figma’s stock settles back a bit, falling 27% on Monday), other key questions have emerged: Will Figma’s debut entice other startups to jump into the fray, bringing an end to the tech industry’s IPO drought? And if so, who’s next?

There’s a long list of late-stage VC-backed tech companies with strong customer bases that Wall Street investment bankers would love to take public. Many of these multi-billion dollar companies, including Databricks, Klarna, Stripe, and SpaceX, have been subjects of IPO speculation for years. And then of course, there’s the crop of richly valued AI startups, from OpenAI and Anthropic, to Elon Musk’s xAI.

Those companies will likely continue to be in the spotlight, but in conversations I had with several investors following Figma’s debut, other names came up as more likely to IPO sooner including Canva, Revolut, Midjourney, Motive, and Anduril.

“Having positive IPOs is a good signal for everybody,” says Kirsten Green, founder and managing partner at Forerunner Ventures, whose portfolio company Chime recently went public and experienced a 37% pop in stock price on its first day of trading. (Forerunner also has investments in public company Hims & Hers and late stage private companies including Oura.) “I believe we should revisit this idea: an IPO is the Series A of being in the public market–and having that really be a motivator to people’s willingness, and maybe even eagerness to go public.” (As if on cue, HeartFlow, a medical technology company, filed an S-1 for its IPO at a $1.3 billion valuation on August 1).

Kyle Stanford, the director of research on US venture capital at PitchBook, notes that just 18 venture-backed companies have gone public through June 30 of this year. This, he says, is a factor of policy uncertainties that translate to funding headwinds as well as the overfunding that occurred in 2021 that continues to stymie venture capital. “Figma hopefully starts to break the dam, but it’s been a pretty slow quarter,” he says.

Though Figma, which makes design software, is profitable and has a strong set of integrated AI capabilities, these qualities are not essential to companies bound for IPO success, says Stanford. He says that investors would prefer companies to generate a minimum of $200 million in revenue that grows at high rates and prioritize positive free cash flow over profitability. Having an AI story is also “very important,” unless the company is very high growth and profitable by wide margins.

Canva may be a most-compelling case since it’s a design company with similar fundamentals to that of Figma, said multiple investors I interviewed. Design collaboration company Canva has raised about $589 million over 18 rounds at a $32 billion valuation, higher than that of Figma’s at the time of its IPO. “Canva is a big winner when it comes to what happened yesterday with Figma,” says Jason Shuman, an investor at Primary Ventures. Shuman, who is not an investor in Canva, points to Canva’s $3 billion annual revenue and 35% year-over-year growth as signs of its business’ durability.

Others agree. “Canva—after looking at Figma, holy crap—they’re going to try to IPO as soon as possible,” says Felix Wang, Managing Director and Partner at Hedgeye Risk Management, who is not a Canva investor. Canva, which was recently valued at $37 billion during a share buy back, did not respond to Fortune’s request for comment.

Wang and others note that the surge in Figma’s price is, in many ways, not actually driven by Figma. Rather, the market is at an all-time high, causing retail trader demand for companies new to market. “They don’t even know this company, but they know it’s a new company,” says Wang of retail traders investing in Figma. “They’re going to put some money into it, and then, more interestingly: they’re going to show it off on social media.”

As Figma is to Canva; NuBank is to Revolut, reasons Primary’s Shuman. He looks at fintech NuBank, which is up around 13% from its early 2025 IPO and thinks that Revolut, which has a very similar business model, could copycat. Revolut told Fortune in a statement: “our focus is not on if or when we IPO, but on continuing to expand the business, building new products, and providing better and cheaper services to serve our growing global customer base.”

Another potential IPO candidate in the near-future is chipmaker Cerebras, says Primary’s Shuman, who invests in vertical AI, B2B, SMB and finance and defense companies but has no stake in Cerebras or Revolut. (Cerebras filed an S-1 in September 2024 but its IPO was delayed by regulators concerned about a $335 million investment by UAE-based G42. Now, it’s been cleared by regulators for a public market listing, but the company has held off on an IPO as it fundraises $1 billion, reports The Information.)

Many companies, including the largest and hottest private company OpenAI (which just nabbed a $300 billion valuation, per the New York Times), have significant incentives to remain private. This is because they can avoid public scrutiny that arises from disclosures required of public companies and have access to significant private capital for liquidity infusions that are often essential.

Yet, the fact that behemoths like OpenAI, Stripe ($91 billion valuation) and SpaceX ($400 billion valuation) are private may even be a hidden cost for the public market. “I’m going to get philosophical,” says Forerunner’s Green. “Part of the public market was created so the broader population could participate in the economy and in the growth of the economy; it wasn’t meant to sit in a few people’s hands.”

One behemoth may be entering the stock market limelight. Anduril, the defense tech company that nabbed a $30.5 billion valuation on its Series G, has incentives to remain private due to the nature of its business. But Pitchbook’s Stanford predicts it to be the next tech IPO. In addition to Anduril’s CEO announcing it will “definitely” become publicly traded, its value proposition is core to Trump Administration priorities in security and defense, which could make it a hot pick for investors, Stanford reasons.

“Other than that,” he says the list of potential IPO candidates these days is long: “There’s probably about 300 other companies that it could be.”

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump will have to wait another three months before he can start selling his meme coin.

The $TRUMP token, which debuted in January just ahead of the president’s inauguration, was scheduled to begin unlocking a major tranche of insider-held tokens this month. But Trump token’s official X account said this week that all major unlocks, including the initial cliff and the next three months of daily vesting, would be delayed by an additional 90 days.

Only 20% of the supply of $TRUMP is available to trade. The remaining 80%, held by insiders, is locked under a three-year schedule, with tokens getting released in increments.

Lockups are meant to prevent a rug pull, the industry term for a scheme that allows insiders to quickly get rich while other investors lose from a slumping price. Vesting schedules are designed to reassure retail investors that early backers won’t dump their coins and immediately flood the market.

The $TRUMP token offered an early indication of the president’s willingness to leverage his power and political brand for financial gain. The market cap quickly surged to $15 billion, buoyed by Trump’s posts on Truth Social and X that declared, “It’s time to celebrate everything we stand for: WINNING!”

On Wednesday, the $TRUMP token soared more than 50% after the project’s website offered the top 220 holders of the token dinner with the president on May 22 at his golf club near Washington, D.C.

As CNBC reported on Friday, Democratic Senators Adam Schiff of California and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts are calling on the U.S. Office of Government Ethics to investigate whether the promotion constitutes “pay to play” corruption.

Like most meme coins, $TRUMP has no underlying product or service. Following its launch in January, First Lady Melania Trump swiftly introduced her own token — $MELANIA — which briefly surpassed $2 billion in market value before tumbling along with $TRUMP.

The token’s creators have already made a fortune despite the trading restrctions. According to Chainalysis, the main wallet behind $TRUMP earned more than $350 million in USDC, a dollar-pegged stablecoin, by acting as a market maker, collecting a fee on each trade.

The Trump family has another crypto project in the works.

World Liberty Financial, a decentralized finance venture backed by the first family, has raised $550 million across two token sales since October. Buyers are barred from reselling their tokens and receive no share of profits — but a Trump-affiliated entity is entitled to 75% of net revenue, including token sale proceeds, according to offering documents reviewed by CNBC.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump and his allies have raked in nearly $900,000 in trading fees over the past two days from the president’s $TRUMP cryptocurrency token, according to Chainalysis, a blockchain data company.

The surge came after a Wednesday announcement in which the top 220 holders of the token were promised dinner with the president.

“Have Dinner in Washington, D.C. With President Trump,” reads a message on the front page of the Trump coin’s website. The event, which is black tie optional and hosted at the president’s private club in the Washington area, is scheduled for May 22, with a reception for the top 25 holders. A “VIP White House Tour” will take place the following day, the site says. The website also hosts an active leaderboard displaying the usernames of top buyers.

The $TRUMP memecoin jumped more than 50% on the dinner news, boosting its total market value to $2.7 billion. It was met with fierce criticism from some of Trump’s political opponents who said the move was further evidence that the president was using crypto to enrich himself. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., a prominent Trump critic, wrote on X that the sale was “the most brazenly corrupt thing a President has ever done. Not close.”

Roughly 80% of the $TRUMP token supply is controlled by the Trump Organization and affiliates, according to the project’s website. Since its launch in January, trading activity has generated about $324.5 million in trading fees for insiders, Chainalysis found. These fees are generated through the token’s built-in mechanism that routes a percentage of each trade to wallets controlled by the project — wallets that, according to the website, are linked to the coin’s creators.

Memecoins, often referred to as meme tokens, are a subset of digital assets that use blockchain technology and derive their value largely from internet culture, memes and social media hype rather than from an underlying utility or asset. The originators of memecoins can make fees when their coins are bought and sold.

They have grown in popularity in recent years as speculative assets, with some coins including dogecoin and fartcoin amassing total market values in excess of $1 billion.

Most of the $TRUMP supply remains locked under a three-year vesting plan, with coins gradually becoming available over time. Lockups like these are meant to protect investors by preventing insiders from cashing out all at once — a scheme commonly known in the crypto world as a “rug pull.” Vesting schedules aim to give retail buyers confidence that early holders won’t overwhelm the market and tank the token’s value.

Still, the dinner contest is being viewed by critics as an unusually explicit attempt to monetize presidential access.

As CNBC reported Friday, Democratic Sens. Adam Schiff of California and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts are urging the U.S. Office of Government Ethics to investigate whether the promotion constitutes “pay to play” corruption.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment. The company behind the memecoin also did not respond to a request for comment.

Delaney Marsco, the director of ethics at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit focused on campaign finance and government accountability, told NBC News the coin and dinner contest amounted to an unprecedented ethics breach — though it is unlikely to be illegal.

“Criminal conflicts of interest statutes don’t apply to the President,” she said. “That has allowed him to go against decades of of norms that every modern president since Carter has adhered to, which is to divest your financial interests, rid yourself of your businesses, and kind of go in to the presidency with a clean financial slate so that no one could accuse you of manipulating policy decisions or using your position in order to enrich yourself.”

“The fact that he is not barred by the law from having these financial interests like this meme coin allows him to engage in a lot of seemingly corrupt activity. It has the appearance of a pay to play, so the President is apparently selling access to himself,” Marsco added.

Molly White, an independent crypto researcher, told NBC News that the leaderboard only shows top $TRUMP holders — and then only by their chosen screen name, making it difficult to identify who is paying to potentially join the dinner.

Schiff and Warren have cited public reports showing that some $TRUMP investors have ties to foreign exchanges or received funds from crypto platforms banned in the U.S., including Binance.

White also noted that at least one top $TRUMP owner has an account on Binance, a cryptocurrency company that doesn’t allow American users.

Trump was elected with significant help from the cryptocurrency industry, which poured tens of millions of dollars into the 2024 election, outpacing corporate donations from traditional sectors like banking and oil. After opposing digital assets during his first term, Trump pivoted in 2024 to campaign as a champion of cryptocurrency, casting Democrats as hostile to innovation and as advocating for tighter regulation.

The $TRUMP token itself offers no product or service, according to the project’s website. It is part of a broader push by the Trump family into digital assets, despite the market’s volatility and regulatory risks.

In addition to the $TRUMP and $MELANIA meme coins, the family is backing World Liberty Financial, a decentralized finance venture that has raised $550 million across two token sales since last October. Buyers are barred from reselling their tokens and receive no share of profits — but a Trump-affiliated entity is entitled to 75% of net revenue, including token sale proceeds.

Together, these projects have created new streams of revenue for Trump and his inner circle at a time when regulatory oversight of cryptocurrency has weakened sharply under his administration.

BEIJING — China’s latest export controls has rattled insiders of the critical minerals industry, and some are concerned that Beijing will leverage its global supply chain dominance in unprecedented ways.

China’s Ministry of Commerce announced Thursday that export controls on antimony would take effect Sept. 15. Antimony is used in bullets, nuclear weapons production and lead-acid batteries. It can also strengthen other metals.

“Three months ago, there’s no way [any] one would have thought they would have done this. It’s quite confrontational in that regard,” Lewis Black, CEO of Canada-based Almonty Industries, said in a phone interview. The company has said it’s spending at least $125 million to reopen a tungsten mine in South Korea later this year.

Tungsten is nearly as hard as a diamond, and used in weapons, semiconductors and industrial cutting machines. Both tungsten and antimony are on the U.S. critical minerals list, and less than 10 elements away from each other on the periodic table.

“My sector is now thinking this is getting much closer to home than graphite,” Black said, referring to China’s previous export controls. Last year, Beijing, the world’s largest graphite producer, said it would enforce export permits for the crucial battery material amid scrutiny from foreign countries worried about its dominance.

“I can’t explain this move and I think that’s what rattled a lot of people in this sector, my customers, and they don’t have a plan B, which China is very aware of. There hasn’t been one for 30 years,” he said.

“There’s always been an equilibrium … they were never weaponized because they could create this snowball of escalation,” he said.

China accounted for 48% of global antimony mine production in 2023, while the U.S. did not mine any marketable antimony, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s latest annual report. The U.S. has not commercially mined tungsten since 2015, and China dominates global tungsten supply, the report said.

“I think it’s the start of some export restrictions in a number of rare earths, minerals,” Tony Adock, executive chair of Tungsten Metals Group, said in a phone interview. He said he found it hard to believe that China would just restrict antimony.

“The way that the [Chinese Commerce Ministry] statement was written, we’ve extrapolated that to tungsten and other rare earths. It may not happen,” Adock said, noting that “tungsten is probably the highest economic importance.”

China’s Ministry of Commerce did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tungsten’s military importance

The U.S. has sought to restrict China’s access to high-end semiconductors, following which Beijing announced export controls on germanium and gallium, two metals used in chipmaking.

While tungsten is also used to make semiconductors, the metal, like antimony, is used in defense production.

“China has a declining tungsten production, but tungsten is absolutely vital, far more than antimony, in military applications,” said Christopher Ecclestone, principal and mining strategist at Hallgarten & Company.

He expects China will put export controls on tungsten by the end of the year, if not in the next month or two.

“During a situation where there’s a bit of a race to secure metals in case there is some sort of flare up in tensions, frankly we talk about South China Sea or Taiwan, you want to have as much tungsten as you can,” Ecclestone said. “But you also want people on the other side to have as least tungsten as you can engineer.”

The U.S. is already keen to reduce its reliance on China for tungsten.

Starting in 2026, the U.S. REEShore Act prohibits the use of Chinese tungsten in military equipment. That refers to the Restoring Essential Energy and Security Holdings Onshore for Rare Earths Act of 2022.

The House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party in June announced a new working group on the U.S. critical minerals policy.

Ecclestone said that last week, the niche market of antimony trading noticed that the U.S. price for buying the metal from Rotterdam was exponentially higher than the price for delivery out of Shanghai. That’s after antimony prices kept rising even after pandemic-related shipping disruptions ended, he said.

“There’s a suspicion that the Pentagon has been re-stuffing its reserves of certain metals, and most notably antimony because it needs antimony for munitions,” said Ecclestone, who founded the mining strategy firm in 2003.

The U.S. Department of Defense did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

China is acting more in retaliation “against what it views as an intrusion into its national interests,” Markus Herrmann Chen, co-founder and managing director of China Macro Group, said in an email.

He pointed out that China’s Third Plenum meeting of policymakers in July “put forward a completely new policy goal of better coordinating the entire minerals value chain, likely reflecting the further heightened supply importance of ‘strategic mineral resources’ for both business and geoeconomic interests.”

Emerging alternatives

As China seeks to ensure its national security, companies in the U.S. and elsewhere are looking to tap a nascent opportunity.

“Energy Fuels has been the largest supplier of uranium oxide to the U.S. for several years supporting domestic nuclear energy production,” Mark Chalmers, president and CEO of Colorado-based Energy Fuels, said in a statement. He said the company is creating a U.S. rare earths product line.

“We recognized that our 40-year expertise working in naturally radioactive materials give us a competitive advantage to duplicate China’s success separating multiple [rare earth elements] from low-cost and plentiful monazite,” Chalmers said, referring to a mineral from which the desired metals can be extracted.

It remains unclear whether China will follow through with a blanket implementation of the latest export controls.

“They don’t want to acknowledge that this could escalate,” Black said. “But I don’t think China wants this to escalate either. The last thing you want to create is another boogey man [at] the beginning of a U.S. election. Let’s see in a week whether this is really a policy or not.”
