The company founder moves quickly from the EV’s suspension and software systems to different models of the R2 that will soon begin to reach American consumers, including a roughly $45,000 entry-level model that Rivian said Tuesday is being pulled ahead from late 2027 to next summer.

But there’s an anxiousness in Scaringe’s voice as he talks to employees and media at the R2 launch event in western Utah and prepares to release the vehicle, starting Tuesday for current reservation holders, to the world.

Scaringe founded the EV maker in 2009. He has grown Rivian into a company with a $22 billion market cap that ranked highest in Consumer Reports’ most recent customer satisfaction survey, but lowest in predictive industry reliability due to consumer-reported problems with its early vehicles.

That’s unusual for an automotive brand. Typically, the more problems a brand has, the lower its customer satisfactions rank — but not Rivian.

It’s a testament to the brand Scaringe, a 43-year-old automotive enthusiast and tech entrepreneur, has built. That kind of customer satisfaction is also harder to maintain as a brand grows, which is Rivian’s goal with the R2.

The new SUV is meant to transform Rivian from a niche EV manufacturer that sells luxury vehicles — largely in California and states where electric vehicles sell well — to a more mainstream brand that can not only compete against U.S. EV leader Tesla but with broader mainstream automotive brands such as Jeep and Subaru.

“Its goal is for it to be a high-volume product,” Scaringe told CNBC. “Certainly, we’re going to draw on some Tesla customers, but the market of non-Tesla customers is many, many times larger.”

Wall Street analysts have described the R2 as Rivian’s make-or-break moment, comparable to Tesla moving from its pricey, first-generation EVs to the mainstream Model 3 and Model Y that currently dominate the U.S. market.

Scaringe doesn’t object to such a categorization.

“When you build a company from scratch, everything is make or break. There is no company if things don’t work,” he said. “Saying that it’s ‘make or break,’ it’s like, of course, it is.”

Shares of Rivian were down by about 5% during intraday trading Tuesday following the new timing announcement for the entry-level model as well as expert reviews being released for the R2, which were largely positive.

Rivian R2 will be cash-flow positive

Rivian is also hoping to achieve its main goal with the R2: profitability. The EV maker lost $3.6 billion last year, while only delivering 42,247 vehicles.

After promising investors it would be profitable on an adjusted basis by 2027, Rivian earlier this year withdrew that target without disclosing a new time frame to achieve the milestone. That comes as its automotive segment lost about $6,000 per vehicle it delivered during the first quarter of this year.

Scaringe reconfirmed to CNBC that Rivian now expects to accomplish the target once a multibillion-dollar plant in Georgia ramps up. It’s slated to begin production in late 2028 and could reach its full capacity by the end of this decade.

Scaringe said Rivian will reach profitability on a per-unit production basis with the R2 this year. But he said the company needs more scale than the 160,000 units already planned for the vehicle at its current plant in Normal, Illinois, to achieve gross margin profitability.

“Georgia brings the volume to generate the gross margin for the vehicle sales that covers everything,” Scaringe said. “The good news is we start to really reduce our burn rate. That’s the beauty of volume, and these vehicles all being cash flow positive at a vehicle level.”

Once the Georgia plant is fully operational, the company’s production is expected to include the R1T pickup, R1 and R2 SUVs, R3 crossover, robotaxis and delivery vans. The company also has said it plans to offer additional vehicles based on the R2 platform.

Despite the R2 looking similar to its nearly $80,000 R1S SUV, Rivian said it has cut the vehicle’s build material costs in half, reduced production complexity and achieved other major efficiency gains.

Scaringe said every R2 model — with starting prices ranging from roughly $45,000 to $58,000 — will be cash-flow positive for the company: “This is a requirement. Every single vehicle is gross margin positive,” he said.

That positive cash flow includes its $45,000 entry-level model that the company moved up after facing online backlash for the timing.

Scaringe during a media roundtable said the change was made to address potential perception concerns about the R2 being a more expensive vehicle as well as a “desire to get it out there.”

“As much as the base trim gets a lot of attention, very few people actually end up buying it,” Scaringe said. “It doesn’t affect the economics of the business that much, but it generates so much noise.”

Tesla Model Y leads sales

Once full production of R2 is online, Scaringe said, the company expects the sweet spot for sales to be in the low $50,000s, which Cox Automotive reports would put it slightly above the U.S. average selling price of $49,000 and below the average EV selling price of more than $55,000.

That pricing and the vehicle’s size place it in the heart of the compact and mid-size SUV markets, which Cox Automotive reports accounted for 45% of U.S. sales last year.

For EVs especially, the Tesla Model Y dominates in the U.S. Cox Automotive estimates Tesla, which does not report sales by region, sold more than 357,500 Model Y units, or roughly 40% of the U.S. EV market, in 2025.

“I think it’ll do well. Rivian has a strong brand and there’s room for another compelling vehicle, especially in that midsize segment,” said Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of industry insights at Cox Automotive, which is an investor in Rivian. “It’s not just EV, they’re going to try to compete and pull from [internal combustion engine] vehicles as well.”

Challenges for Rivian remain abundant, Valdez said. In addition to slower-than-expected EV adoption and lack of charging infrastructure, the company also needs to prove it can ramp up production quickly without quality issues.

Of the non-EVs in the segments, the Toyota Rav4 and Honda CR-V lead the compact SUV segment, while the larger Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee lead midsize SUVs.

“We want people to look and just say … ‘it’s the best car in that price range,’ and by virtue of that, it’ll draw new customers, non-EV customers,” Scaringe said.

To do so, Scaringe believes, Rivian will also need to become a leader in software and in-vehicle technologies such as automated driving and artificial intelligence.

Rivian received outside validation for its emerging technology efforts in the form of a $5.8 billion deal with Volkswagen that includes putting Rivian’s software and electrical architecture in the German automaker’s future EVs.

The R2 will launch with an advanced driver-assistance system, or ADAS, that will largely control itself under certain conditions with driver monitoring, but it will not have an AI voice assistant until later this year. Both systems will continue to be updated through over-the-air updates, according to Rivian.

Scaringe said he views the company’s emerging software services as being just as important as the vehicles.

“You need them both. It’s like asking is the heart or the brain more important in a human. You can’t survive without both,” Scaringe said. “It’s a false binary. I don’t see them as separate.”

Japanese entertainment giant Sony on Friday said it expects annual profit to rise as revenue from some business segments in the fourth quarter helped offset headwinds from a memory price crunch.

Here are Sony’s fourth-quarter results compared with LSEG estimates:

Revenue: 3.036 trillion Japanese yen ($19.4 billion) compared to analyst estimates of 2.896 trillion yen.

Operating profit: 164 billion yen compared to analyst estimates of 278 billion yen.

While hardware sales fell to 110 billion yen in the fourth quarter, compared to 183 billion yen in the same period last year, revenue was bolstered by strong performances in Sony’s image sensor and music businesses.

Total sales of the PlayStation 5 fell to 1.5 million units in the fourth quarter, down from 2.8 million a year ago.

Sony predicted that net profit for its upcoming financial year ending March 2027 will rise 13% to 1.16 trillion yen, compared to the 1.03 trillion yen profit it made this year.

The company also said it would buy back up to 500 billion yen in shares over the next year.

Shares in the company remained steady, with the stock trading down 0.5% as of market close on May 8.

Memory price surge

Sony is contending with an unprecedented surge in memory prices. Memory is a key component of the PS5 and prices have jumped significantly as memory makers direct their stock to huge demand from AI data centers, meaning supply remains limited.

In March, Sony said it would raise prices on its flagship PlayStation 5 consoles for the second time in under a year due to “pressures in the global economic landscape.”

The company said Friday it expects to contain the impact of memory price hikes on its 2026 forecast to around 30 billion yen. It also expects hardware profitability in its upcoming financial year to be the same as in the past 12 months.

“In Q4 FY25, the impact of memory market conditions gradually became more apparent in the smartphone market, especially in the low-end, but our mobile sensor sales exceeded our forecast, primarily due to strong shipments to our major customer,” Sony said in its earnings presentation.

It added that sales for the PS5 depend on its ability to secure reasonable prices of memory for the console.

Sony’s stock has fallen around 23% since the start of 2026, after yearly gains of more than 20% in each of the three preceding years.

Operating profit in the fourth quarter fell well below expectations as the company saw losses from its scrapped EV joint venture with Honda and its 2022 purchase of game developer Bungie resulted in impairments.

Sony forecast a slight drop in revenue for the upcoming financial year, predicting 12.3 trillion yen compared to 12.5 trillion yen the company hit this year.

Chrysler and Dodge CEO Matt McAlear wants the world to know that the minivan is not dead. Far from it, he said, at the New York International Auto Show, where he showed off the latest version of the Pacifica Pinnacle, the highest-end trim of the brand’s sole product line.

The Chrysler brand — once one of the biggest names in the auto industry — only sells a single family of minivans, which many take as a sign of the brand’s impending demise.

Chrysler, which has been promising new products for years, said it will share more plans at parent company Stellantis‘ investor day on May 21 in Auburn Hills, Michigan. McAlear didn’t elaborate further but said the brand had “a lot of things in the works” and touted its only vehicle.

“We absolutely see the minivan market growing, and we believe there’s an opportunity for Chrysler to continue its growth year over year,” McAlear said. Chrysler is the best-selling brand in the segment, he added.

Minivan resurgence?

Chrysler is often credited with inventing the minivan, or at least mainstreaming it in the United States in the early 1980s. Rivals followed, but many have since abandoned it.

Since the 1990s, minivans have steadily lost ground to SUVs, which are considered sportier and more adventurous. Minivan sales were a mere 1.7% of the market in 2017, according to Edmunds. In 2025, they were up to 2.4%.

Sales numbers from Chrysler and its few competitors in this segment indicate growing interest in the adaptive and often affordable “multipurpose vehicle,” as the minivan is sometimes called. The average transaction price for a large SUV is $77,215, according to Edmunds. The average minivan price, meanwhile, is $48,269 — just above the overall industry average cost for a new vehicle of $48,402.

There is enough demand that Chrysler saw fit to unveil a new highest-end version of its minivan at the Auto Show, called the Pinnacle. The vehicle is full of features common in higher-end family vehicles, like screens on the backs of seats so passengers in a rear row can watch movies on a road trip. But there are also some perks that are tough to find outside the segment: both second and third row seats on some versions can be completely stowed in the floor, for example.

Companies like Chrysler are also trying to look beyond the “family hauler” identity the minivan has had for much of its history. Its Grizzly Peak concept has knobby tires and a roof rack, for a more rugged option and McAlear said the company was thinking about how to do more of that.

“We’re looking at it,” he said. “We’re trying to figure out if there’s a way to do it because people love it. And it is unlike anything you’ve ever seen from a minivan brand before.”

McAlear also touted the van’s storage capacity compared with similar vehicles.

“I’ve got a friend that’s a racecar driver,” he said. “One of his favorite things about this is he puts a shifter kart in the backseat with the third row down, with his kids so he can keep it safe and doesn’t have to have a trailer. Another buddy of mine loves kiteboarding, and he doesn’t want to put it on the top because it’s hard to get it up and down. It’s hard to keep it secure and safe. He keeps it inside.”

Pacifica sales were only up slightly in 2025. The affordable Voyager model, which the brand has since renamed the Pacifica LX, sells in lower quantities but saw a bigger jump. Pacifica sales were down for the first quarter of 2026, but Chrysler said they were up nearly 84% in March year over year.

There are only a handful of vehicles in this segment in the U.S., or five basic model lines including the electric Volkswagen ID Buzz, which VW prefers not to call a minivan.

Toyota Sienna sales jumped 35% in 2025, and were up again in the first quarter of 2026. It’s nowhere near Toyota’s best-selling vehicle, and many models — some of which were new ones or refreshes — saw greater increase. Toyota’s Japanese rival Honda saw sales of its Odyssey jump 10% last year. But they dipped in the first quarter of 2026.

One especially successful model has been the Kia Carnival. Volumes rose in 2025 and in the first quarter of 2026. It still doesn’t match Kia’s comparable SUVs, as minivan sales are just a few thousand shy of the three-row Sorento, but far below the popular, more rugged Telluride.

“Carnival is just a great family, practical vehicle,” said Eric Watson, vice president of sales operations for Kia America. “I think in the stage of life when people have kids and want those power sliding doors and the configuration of what that vehicle provides, it’s perfect in that life stage.”

Kia was one of the later entrants into the segment, and though it has the sliding rear door that defines the minivan segment, the body panel on it is punched into give the illusion the vehicle is an SUV.

“I think that attracts a lot of people and lowers that stigma of being a minivan family,” Watson said.

But some are attracted to the segment itself. While the Chrysler Pinnacle starts above $56,000, the lowest priced LX, starts just above $41,000.

“We’re actually seeing a resurgence,” McAlear said. “At the end of the day, these things make life easier and you don’t always have to impress everybody.”

Nissan Motor plans to introduce a new type of hybrid to the U.S. market that drives like an all-electric vehicle but is powered — not driven — by a traditional gas-powered engine.

The new Nissan “e-Power” is called a series hybrid. It uses the engine as a generator to power the vehicle’s electric motors that then propel the vehicle. It operates like emerging extended-range electric vehicles, or EREVs, but has a smaller battery and doesn’t require a plug.

It’s also different from a traditional hybrid, such as the Toyota Prius, because the gas engine in those vehicles is used to propel the vehicle. The series hybrid’s engine just keeps the battery charged to power the electric motors in the vehicles.

The e-Power hybrid system for Nissan is planned to launch domestically later this year in a new version of its popular Rogue compact SUV.

Timing for such a vehicle could be ideal for Nissan with climbing gas prices, slower-than-planned adoption of EVs and an expected surge in hybrid sales amid new entries, according to officials.

After losing billions of dollars on EVs, automakers such as Nissan are turning to hybrid vehicles to meet customer expectations for fuel economy and to help with driving performance.

S&P Global Mobility expects hybrids in the U.S. this year to increase to 18.4% of new vehicle sales, up from 12.6% last year and 7.3% in 2023. It’s forecasting pure EVs, meanwhile, will be 7.1% of new vehicle sales, down from 8% last year.

“This is a unique powertrain for the for the U.S.,” Kurt Rosolowsky, Nissan North America vehicle evaluation and test engineer, said during a media briefing. “This is an electrically driven vehicle, as far as what is powering the wheels, but it doesn’t have a plug, and you fill it up with gas like you do with a normal car.”

Series hybrids

Nissan and other automakers have used series hybrids elsewhere, particularly in Asia, but companies have been reluctant to bring the vehicles to the U.S. because of consumer expectations for driving dynamics and power.

To address those concerns, Nissan said it has developed a more powerful 1.5-liter, three-cylinder turbocharged engine specifically for the e-Power system, in addition to new packaging and other upgrades, to appease American buyers.

“The turbo is only there to serve efficiency at higher speeds for the gas engine to deliver energy,” Rosolowsky said.

The e-Power for the U.S. market is Nissan’s third generation of the series hybrid since it debuted in Japan in 2016. Since then, Nissan said it has sold more than 1.6 million vehicles globally with e-Power in nearly 70 countries.

“I think it’s going to be a really good system. I think it’s going to be very popular for Nissan in the new Rogue when it arrives later this year,” said Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of market research at communications and consulting firm Telemetry.

Abuelsamid said the only real drawback to the series hybrid is that it’s less efficient at higher speeds, which Nissan is trying to overcome with the new engine as well as battery size.

Driving e-Power

Driving a European version of the Nissan Rogue Sport sold with the ePower system around suburban Detroit, the vehicle’s driving dynamics — specifically fast acceleration and regenerative braking — are formidable.

They come with the familiar sound of an engine revving but without the shifting or sputtering of transmission gears and far less noise, vibration and harshness, or NVH, as the industry commonly refers to it.

“The driving experience really is what makes it different with those fewer components. You have less noise and less vibration,” Rosolowsky said.

Unlike traditional gas-powered vehicles, the e-Power system also does not require a traditional transmission to shift gears or a driveshaft that transfers torque from the transmission to the differential, powering the wheels.

While the Rogue Sport is a smaller vehicle and only forward-wheel-drive, it’s easy to see how the system will translate to a larger vehicle with all-wheel-drive, which the new Rogue with e-Power will be.

The lack of a plug, some engine noise and slight vibration also might be more familiar for drivers who have been reluctant to adopt all-electric vehicles.

While Nissan is not releasing specifics such as pricing or fuel economy for the upcoming Rogue with e-Power, the Rogue Sport was achieving more than 40 miles per gallon during heavy city driving, according to the vehicle’s MPG system.

The current Nissan Rogue, depending on the model, can achieve more than 30 MPG, according to U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Nissan’s vehicles historically been less fuel efficient than those from its larger Japanese rivals. Honda Motor and Toyota Motor, the latter of which pioneered traditional hybrids with the Prius and continues to dominate the sector in the U.S.

Nissan declined to discuss the possibility of expanding the e-Power system to other vehicles in the U.S., but confirmed the new system is modular and capable of working with many different engines.

“If we were to expand this to other vehicles, you can theoretically bolt this onto another gasoline engine of a different size and have more options for an e-Power system,” Rosolowsky said.

The new tie-ups are for Nvidia’s Drive Hyperion platform for AVs. The system helps companies develop and deploy driver-assist and autonomous driving capabilities for Level 4 AVs, which are capable of driving without human intervention under predefined areas or circumstances.

“We’ve been working on self-driving cars for a long time. The ChatGPT moment of self-driving cars has arrived,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said Monday during the company’s GTC conference. “We now know we could successfully autonomously drive cars, and today, we are announcing four new partners for Nvidia’s robotaxi-ready platform. … The number of robotaxi-ready cars in the future are going to be incredible.”

No vehicles on sale to consumers today are capable of driving themselves without human monitoring or intervention, but some companies, such as Alphabet’s Waymo, offer ride-hailing fleets with Level 4 self-driving vehicles, also known as robotaxis. Most vehicles on sale today are considered Level 2, with drivers needing to continually monitor the systems.

Drive Hyperion is part of what Nvidia calls its “end-to-end” AV platform that includes data center training, large-scale simulations and in-vehicle computing. The company does not produce or sell AVs or many of the components needed to operate such vehicles.

Current Nvidia customers for Drive Hyperion include many self-driving companies such as Aurora and Nuro, as well as other more consumer-facing businesses such as Sony Group, Uber Technologies, Jeep parent Stellantis and electric vehicle maker Lucid Group.

AVs are important to Nvidia, as self-driving cars remain one of the primary areas where the chipmaker can show growth outside of artificial intelligence.

Many believe AI could be key to the proliferation of AVs, which Wall Street analysts and automotive executives have targeted as a multitrillion-dollar growth industry.

The new companies add to a growing list of such tie-ups for Nvidia, as the chipmaker and the automotive and technology industries try to capitalize on and proliferate AVs after years of failed ventures for robotaxis.

DETROIT — Automakers are largely sitting on the advertising sidelines during this year’s Super Bowl amid uncertainty in the U.S. automotive industry involving sales, tariffs and regulations.

Carmakers — historically major buyers of ads during the big game — have been inconsistent with advertising during the Super Bowl in recent years, with only a handful putting out spots each year.

“It’s definitely been on the decline,” said Sean Muller, CEO of ad data company iSpot. “Autos are tightening their belts, and they’re probably pulling back on their budgets, and certainly that’s reflected. I think the Super Bowl is a good barometer for all of this.”

Automakers accounted for 40% of Super Bowl ad minutes in 2012, but dropped all the way to 7% by 2025, according to iSpot. Only three automakers are expected to air ads, totaling roughly two minutes, during this year’s game.

Tim Mahoney, a longtime automotive marketing executive, said it’s a balancing act when it comes to Super Bowl advertising. He said a company has to have the right product, ad campaign, and, of course, capital to stand out and get a return on its investment.

“Super Bowl is just a massive platform, but it has gotten so expensive,” Mahoney, who worked for GM, VW, Subaru and Porsche, told CNBC. “There are sometimes interesting ways to navigate around it. … Adjacencies can be smart.”

During Mahoney’s tenure, Subaru became the presenting sponsor of Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl and GM’s Chevrolet brand “blacked out” TV screens just ahead of the Super Bowl for an ad for its in-vehicle Wi-Fi in 2015.

Outside of the Super Bowl, automakers have increased sports advertising and embraced more streaming and regional advertising over national reach, according to iSpot.

“They’re not cutting back in live sports,” Muller said, citing iSpot data that automakers now represent roughly 60% of spend on live sports.

Autos out

Automotive executives who spoke to CNBC about not advertising during this year’s Super Bowl said they were deterred due to the cost — $8 million on average for a 30-second ad — and felt their ad dollars would be better spent elsewhere.

“We are going to really spread our efforts, so money and creativity, over a year,” said Stellantis Chief Marketing Officer Olivier Francois, who is well known for past Super Bowl ads. “There’s no need for a peak or something in February.”

Stellantis, which is in the midst of a company turnaround plan, will focus this year on the 250th anniversary of the U.S. as its major marketing push in addition to more business-oriented spending and a provocative social media campaign for Jeep featuring a singing fish it launched this week.

Nissan Motor, which last advertised during the Super Bowl in 2022, is also experimenting this year with parallel advertising.

The Japan-based automaker on Friday released a comedic, high-energy “Big Game” social media ad promoting a chips-and-dip holder for its Nissan Rogue SUV. The “Nissan Dip Seat” ad stars chef and “The Bear” actor Matty Matheson promoting the fictional product. It also promotes a sweepstakes to win one of the vehicles.

“One of the key things for us is that we wanted to kind of find a way that was more social in nature. It’s been a part of what our overall strategy has been this year,” Nissan U.S. CMO Allyson Witherspoon told CNBC.

Witherspoon declined to discuss the cost of the spot, but confirmed it was less than it would have spent to air a traditional Super Bowl ad.

Others, such as Honda Motor, will look to the Olympics as their major ad spending. Honda is sponsoring U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams for the Winter Games in Milan this year as well as at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

“Super Bowl is one moment in time. The Olympics has so many verticals you can dip into and tell these stories,” said Ed Beadle, who leads marketing for American Honda Motor.

The opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics took place on Friday in Milan. It also kicks off a month that Comcast’s NBCUniversal — which will be airing the Olympics, Super Bowl and NBA All-Star weekend — has coined “Legendary February.”

2026 ads

GM remains a wild card for this year’s game, as the only automaker to not prerelease its ad. The Detroit automaker is using the Super Bowl to launch its Cadillac F1 team, including revealing the look of its first livery car to a national audience.

The automaker last month showed a design prototype of the vehicle in Detroit, including at the city’s auto show, but it has not released any information about the commercial.

Toyota, the NFL’s official automotive partner, is expected to air two 30-second ads focused on family connections.

One called “Superhero Belt” shows a grandson and a grandfather switching roles over the years and telling each other to secure their seatbelts. The other has not been released.

Volkswagen’s ad resurrects the automaker’s well-known 1990s campaign for a new generation of customers, as part of a marketing drive called “The Great Invitation: Drivers Wanted.”

The new campaign, including a 30-second Super Bowl spot, features many of the automaker’s vehicles being driven around to House of Pain’s 1992 hit “Jump Around.”

DETROIT — The only consistency has been inconsistency for the U.S. automotive industry during the first half of this decade — a trend that’s expected to continue amid challenging market conditions in 2026.

The U.S. auto sector — a crucial driver of the economy estimated around 4.8% of America’s gross domestic product — has endured rolling crises since the Covid-19 pandemic shuttered U.S. assembly plants in early 2020. The global health crisis was followed by yearslong supply chain issues, semiconductor chip shortages, political whipsawing, tariffs and other challenges for all-electric and autonomous vehicles.

Automakers have been surprisingly resilient during the challenges, but those issues are now combining with more traditional industry problems of affordability and slowing consumer demand. That’s all creating a more challenging environment for automakers in 2026.

“We’ve got to plan for the worst and hope for the best,” Hyundai North America CEO Randy Parker told CNBC during an interview. “That’s the situation that we’re in right now.”

Other executives have expressed similar sentiments as they prepare for a “new” U.S. automotive industry: one that’s more expensive, smaller and, by many means, less predictable.

Automotive forecasters are calling for steady to lower sales this year, despite industry sales only hitting 16.3 million units last year. That was the highest level since the pandemic in 2020, but down from more than 17 million for five consecutive years before the global health crisis, according to industry data.

“Anyone in the auto industry … we should all be very careful about consumer demand,” Ford Motor CEO Jim Farley said Jan. 13 during an event for the Detroit Auto Show. “That’s really important.”

‘Affordability crisis’

One of the largest industry issues — and one that’s a culmination of many factors — is the affordability of new vehicles.

New vehicles prices have climbed; the average transaction price was hovering around $50,000 toward the end of last year, up 30% from less than $38,747 to begin 2020, according to Cox Automotive.

Average transaction prices historically increased on average 3.2% year-over-year, but from 2020-2022 that average nearly tripled to 9%.

“Pandemic-induced production constraints and supply chain chaos didn’t just disrupt the market temporarily. They fundamentally restructured pricing dynamics. This elevated plateau is now the new baseline, which has the market anchored at these higher price points,” said Erin Keating, Cox Automotive senior director of economic and industry insights.

It’s not just vehicle prices hitting consumers’ wallets either. They’re also dealing with inflation, increases in maintenance and repairs, and 13% annual average increases for insurance over the past five years, according to Cox Automotive.

“The cumulative weight of all these increases has pushed total vehicle ownership costs beyond reach for many middle- and lower-income households, constraining market access and accelerating the affordability crisis,” said Cox Automotive interim chief economist Jeremy Robb.

Cox Automotive reports it took 33.7 weeks of median household income to buy the average new vehicle in November 2019. Now it’s 36.3 weeks. That’s down from a record high of 42.2 weeks during the pandemic, but still means vehicles cost thousands of dollars more than historic levels.

David Christ, Toyota Motor’s U.S. sales chief, warned that the current tariff and trade environment will cause prices to continue to increase this year, despite the concerns.

“On our end, we’re just taking it month-to-month, and we’re watching the competitors closely,” Christ said on a call with reporters earlier this month. “But we feel prices are going to go up for us and for our competitors.”

To combat the slower sales and affordability challenges, Toyota and other automakers have said they will refocus on lower-priced vehicle models — a change from recent years when automakers prioritized their most expensive, highly profitable vehicles during supply chain shortages.

“Every automaker must face the reality that the American market has changed for the foreseeable future,” said Lance Woelfer, head of American Honda Motor’s U.S. sales.

For Honda, Woelfer said that means increasing production on less expensive trims as well as focusing on certified pre-owned vehicles, which are used but backed by company warranties. For others, such as Ford, that could include reentering abandoned segments such as sedans, according to its CEO.

“Never say never,” Farley told reporters during the event in Detroit. “The sedan market is very vibrant. It’s not that there isn’t a market there. It’s just we couldn’t find a way to compete and be profitable. Well, we may find a way to do that.”

Ford sells sedans outside of the U.S. but exited the domestic market with the cancellation of the Michigan-made Fusion in 2020. It also eliminated the larger Taurus sedan and smaller Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus before that.

Ford’s crosstown rivals General Motors and Stellantis have largely exited the traditional U.S. sedan market as well.

Affordability concerns are generating attention from outside the automotive industry as well. A Senate committee led by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, requested a hearing with CEOs from Ford, GM and Stellantis about affordability and other issues in the automotive industry. The hearing was scheduled for Jan. 14 but was postponed amid scheduling conflicts and general pushback from Ford about Tesla CEO Elon Musk not attending the meeting, according to a letter from the company to the subcommittee that was obtained by Politico.

Automakers are also bracing this year for potentially volatile U.S. regulations and trade negotiations, such as the upcoming renegotiating of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that’s scheduled for later this year.

Currently, automakers can import new vehicles from South Korea or Japan with lower tariffs than from Canada or Mexico, depending on their U.S. content. The Trump administration has reached trade deals on vehicles with those Asian countries but not its neighbors to the north and south.

Depending on the outcome of those discussions, USMCA could be a tailwind for automakers that have a lot of production in the U.S.

“Looking to 2026, our cycle work would suggest that autos would have a difficult time outperforming given a relatively flat y/y volume outlook. However, we see reasons for optimism for US [automakers],” UBS analyst Joseph Spak wrote last month in an investor note.

Wall Street will begin getting its first outlooks from automakers this week beginning with GM announcing its fourth quarter and year-end earnings on Tuesday, followed by Tesla on Wednesday.

GM CEO Mary Barra earlier this month reconfirmed that the automaker expects 2026 will be better than 2025.

GM’s 2025 guidance included adjusted earnings before interest and taxes of between $12 billion and $13 billion, or $9.75 to $10.50 adjusted EPS, and adjusted automotive free cash flow of $10 billion to $11 billion, up from $7.5 billion to $10 billion.

But depending on the automaker, Wall Street analysts expect mixed results for the U.S. industry as it continues to deal with uncertain times.

“It is hard to imagine how 2026 could bring more external shocks and share price divergence than 2025 but, with no visible end to industry disruption, we are also prepared for surprises, impairments and strategic shifts,” Jefferies analyst Owen Paterson said in an investor note this month.

“With consecutive quarterly sales increases and market share growth, it’s clear that we are taking the right steps to reset our business in the U.S.,” Jeff Kommor, head of Stellantis U.S. retail sales, said in a release. “There is still work to do, but we made progress this year with a diversified powertrain lineup.”

GM, meanwhile, retained its position as the largest seller of vehicles in the U.S. It’s held that title for decades, aside from Toyota outselling the American automaker for one year amid major supply chain disruptions in 2021.

GM sold more than 2.85 million vehicles last year in the U.S, including roughly 703,000 during the fourth quarter. That compares to Toyota at 2.52 million U.S. sales in 2025.

“Demand for our brands and products is strong at every price point, and we are well-positioned to build on this momentum in the year ahead,” GM President of North America Duncan Aldred said in a statement.

GM stock is up over 55% to a record of more than $80 per share, as of Friday’s close, topping the company’s previous annual increase of 48.3% last year. That includes a nearly 13% rise so far in December, adding to five consecutive months of share gains, according to FactSet.

Several factors have been driving the share increase. But GM CEO Mary Barra and other executives have contended for years that the automaker’s stock has been significantly undervalued given its consistent earnings performance.

“Great vehicles, innovative technology, a rewarding customer experience, along with strong financial results, will continue to set GM apart in an increasingly competitive landscape,” Barra said during the company’s last quarterly earnings call in October.

Amid the stock’s run-up, Barra has significantly cut her position in the company. She has exercised options or sold roughly 1.8 million shares this year, valued at more than $73 million, according to public filings confirmed by GM.

As of the last public filing in September, Barra still owned more than 433,500 shares valued at over $35 million, with much of her annual awards granted in options and stock.

GM ‘s most recent quarterly earnings were a major catalyst for Wall Street analyst bullishness that led to reratings and price target increases after the third quarter.

The automaker’s quarterly adjusted earnings per share have topped Wall Street estimates every quarter except the second quarter of 2022 over the past five years, according to average expectations of analysts compiled by FactSet.

Wall Street analysts overall have cited GM’s cash generation, earnings resilience and track record in delivering shareholder returns, including stock buybacks, as reasons for their optimism. The automaker also is expected to greatly benefit from regulation changes under the Trump administration, despite ongoing tariffs.

UBS recently increased its 12-month price target on GM stock by 14% to $97 per share, while naming the company its top autos pick heading into 2026. Morgan Stanley earlier this month also upgraded GM to overweight, with a $90 per share price target.

“In our view, General Motors leads the D3 in the North America and Global market with steady unit sales growth, [average transaction price] growth, disciplined incentive spend, and inventory management. This has resulted in better [earnings before interest and taxes] margin and return metrics than peers,” Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco said in a Dec. 7 investor note.

GM stock has cumulatively been in the black on a weekly basis since June. The largest weekly gain of 19.3% occurred when the automaker reported its third-quarter earnings on Oct. 21. Those results beat Wall Street’s expectations and the company raised its annual guidance, adding that next year’s earnings are expected to be better than 2025’s.

GM stock’s has also seen a boost from some external factors. The Trump administration has loosened U.S. fuel economy and emissions standards, removed related penalties that were imposed under the Biden administration, and renegotiated its trade deal with South Korea, a major manufacturing hub for GM. Meanwhile, the industry has been seeing a slowdown in less profitable EV sales.

“GM is effectively a regional (NA) [automaker] and we believe they are well positioned to benefit from the relaxed US regulatory environment (emissions and fuel economy),” UBS analyst Joseph Spak said in a Dec. 15 investor note raising the per share price.

GM CFO Paul Jacobson earlier this month said the company will continue stock buybacks.

“As long as the stock remains as undervalued as it is, the priority is to buy back shares. And I think you’ll continue to see that from us going forward,” he said during a UBS investor conference.

GM is rated overweight with an $80.86 target price, according to analyst averages compiled by FactSet.

Shares of Rivian were off roughly 3% during the hourlong event, and fell further as OpenAI made its own AI announcement Thursday, revealing its most advanced model yet.

Rivian also said it plans to roll out an Autonomy+ subscription with “continuously expanding capabilities” to customers of its second-generation vehicles in early 2026, to be powered by its Rivian Autonomy Processors and autonomy computers.

The Autonomy+ offering will be priced at $2,500 as a one-time upfront purchase or is available for $49.99 per month to start.
“AI is enabling us to create technology and customer experiences at a rate that is completely different from what we’ve seen in the past,” Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said during the hourlong event.

Company executives said in a statement that a near-future software update will include a “Universal Hands-Free,” capability, allowing Rivian customers “hands-free driving” on over 3.5 million miles of roads in North America, covering the vast majority of marked roads in the U.S.

Scaringe said the new advanced driver-assistance system will continue to improve as more miles are driven, learning through a data flywheel through reinforced learning.

Unlike its primary competitor, Tesla, Rivian said it intends to use lidar, or light detection and ranging, systems and radar sensors in its forthcoming “R2” cars to enable “level 4,” or fully automated driving, as defined by SAE Levels of Driving Automation.

A passenger can sleep in the back seat in a level 4 self-driving car while it carries them to their destination in normal traffic and weather conditions.
Scaringe said Thursday the company’s forthcoming self-driving vehicles enable the company to pursue robotaxis, which Tesla has promised for years but has yet to launch.

“Now, while our initial focus will be on personally owned vehicles, which today represent a vast majority of the miles to the United States, this also enables us to pursue opportunities in the rideshare space,” Scaringe said during the event.

Rivian is not alone in aiming to deliver autonomous systems that meet level 4 expectations, while rolling out partially automated features along the way to drivers who generally want these to reduce fatigue on long drives or make them safer behind the wheel overall.

Tesla and General Motors are working on their own proprietary driverless systems, while Honda, Lucid and Nissan have partnered with venture-backed autonomous vehicle tech startups (Helm.AI, Nuro and Wayve respectively) to develop similar systems with a range of different technical approaches.

Powering Rivian’s self-driving aspirations will be a new in-house chip developed by the company, which is set to launch in 2026. Vidya Rajagopalan, Rivian vice president of electrical hardware, said the chip uses “multi-chip module” packaging and has “high memory bandwidth,” which is “key for AI applications.” Rivian’s chip boasts bandwidth of 205 gigabytes per second.

“Rivian is uniquely positioned to move from a software-defined vehicle and bring to the world an AI-defined vehicle,” Rivian Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid said.

The automaker also announced a new AI-powered “Rivian Assistant,” a next-generation voice interface launching in early 2026 on its first- and second-generation vehicles.

Rivian is under pressure to prove its future growth potential to investors and to grow its customer base amid slowing sales of battery electric vehicles in the U.S. and competition from Chinese EV makers internationally.

The fully electric vehicle segment has experienced a sales slump domestically after the Trump administration put an early end in September to a $7,500 federal tax credit previously available for EV buyers in the U.S.

Shares of Rivian are up about 25% this year, but remain off more than 80% since the company’s 2021 initial public offering amid internal and external challenges.
