Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell speaks Monday to the Harvard University Principles of Economics class.

This will be one of Powell’s final scheduled public appearances before his term ends in May. The discussion comes with markets anticipating the central bank will be on hold regarding interest rates through the end of the year.

In his most recent comments, Powell characterized the economy as growing at “a solid pace” and said he is not concerned with worries of stagflation, low growth with high inflation. However, he noted that policymakers are taking a cautious approach as multiple factors play out this year, including the Iran war, tariffs and a stagnant labor market.

Powell’s term ends officially on May 15, and there is only one more policy meeting between now and then. However, it’s possible he will stay in the position longer if the Senate does not confirm is designated successor, former Governor Kevin Warsh.

The nomination currently is being held up in the Senate Banking Committee as U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro continues an investigation into the renovations at the Fed’s headquarters. A judge already has quashed a subpoena Pirro’s office sent to Powell, though she is appealing that decision.

The potential for a deal between Harvard University and the White House was thrown into doubt after President Trump unleashed a blistering attack on the Ivy League school in a series of late-night social media posts.

Just last week, Mr. Trump privately told negotiators he was willing to drop his demand for a $200 million payment from Harvard to the government if that would secure an agreement to end his pressure campaign against the university, which he views as hostile to conservatives and his presidency.

After a report from The New York Times about the change of heart, Mr. Trump’s Truth Social posts at 11:20 p.m. on Monday and again on Tuesday — at 12:11 a.m. and 7:56 a.m. — made clear he had lost interest, at least for now, in such a compromise.

Instead of dropping the fine, Mr. Trump said he would demand $1 billion “in damages.” He threatened the school with a criminal investigation.

“This should be a Criminal, not Civil, event, and Harvard will have to live with the consequences of their wrongdoings,” Mr. Trump wrote. “In any event, this case will continue until justice is served.”

The sudden shift was characteristic of Mr. Trump’s vacillating demands during months spent trying to hammer out a Harvard deal, which remains a central plank of his broader push to alter the culture of a higher education system he had derided as a factory of “woke” ideology.

Miles Rapoport, the co-chairman of Crimson Courage, an alumni group that has urged Harvard to resist any deal that compromises its academic freedom, said Mr. Trump and his White House were “completely unreliable negotiating partners.”

“I hope this strengthens Harvard’s resolve to not make a deal with an administration that is so ready to go nuclear at any moment,” Mr. Rapoport said.

Ryan Enos, a government professor at Harvard, said Mr. Trump’s shifting demands seemed to show he was motivated by revenge instead of policy goals.

“He’s just looking for a way to win a battle and assert political retribution on an institution that he thinks is defying him,” Mr. Enos said. “This is indicative of a larger story in the country, which is that Trump is flailing politically and looking for ways to assert pressure.”

A Harvard spokesman declined to comment.

The Times reported on Monday that Mr. Trump was willing to accept a deal if Harvard agreed to spend $500 million on job training programs, instead of a $200 million fine.

In his social media posts, Mr. Trump assailed The Times’s reporting as “completely wrong.” The Times issued a statement standing by the article, which was based on information from Trump and Harvard officials.

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, disputed that Mr. Trump had made any concessions and objected to the context included in The Times’s report that a deal with Harvard would hand him a victory at a difficult time in his presidency. She said Mr. Trump’s renewed interest in a deal was part of a “normal back-and-forth” of negotiations.

“The president has been adamant with Harvard about making a deal, as many other universities have,” Ms. Leavitt said. “But unfortunately, they have dragged their feet and proven inept at doing what is right.”

What started last year as an effort from the administration to investigate antisemitism on the Cambridge, Mass., campus quickly morphed into a broad attack on the university, including 13 investigations from 10 federal agencies.

In May, Mr. Trump said Harvard should have a cap on the number of international students enrolled. That position undercut the administration’s argument that merit alone should guide admissions practices. But weeks later, Mr. Trump posted on social media that Chinese students could continue studying at Harvard as part of his trade talks with Beijing, adding that allowing students from China “has always been good with me!”

In October, Mr. Trump publicly waffled about Harvard in the span of seconds. Aboard Air Force One, he told reporters that the deal would include $500 million for trade education. Moments later, he mused that “we may just charge them a fine, big fine, $500 million fine.”

In June, Mr. Trump said a “‘mindbogglingly’ HISTORIC deal” with Harvard could be done in about a week. In September, he said that Linda McMahon, his education secretary, was “finishing up the final details.” Aboard Air Force One in October, he said that the two sides had agreed to the “concept of a deal.” Last month, at a news conference marking the one-year anniversary of his second inauguration, he said, “I hear we have a deal, but who the hell knows with them?”

Harvard’s leaders have viewed the administration’s attacks as politically motivated and have been frustrated by the White House’s inconsistent approach to talks, its evolving demands and the rotating mix of people driving discussions.

Mr. Trump’s latest comments gave fodder to opponents of a deal, who have argued that the president cannot be trusted to keep his end of any bargain. But his new demands also underscored the argument from others in the Harvard community, who say the stakes are too high to walk away from the negotiating table.

In his posts, Mr. Trump appeared to once again threaten to cut off Harvard from future research funding, which is the lifeblood of major research universities, even though a federal judge blocked the administration’s attempt to do that last year. The president’s call for a criminal investigation also intensified some university leaders’ fears of being subject to political prosecutions.

Mr. Trump had insisted on $500 million for job training last year. But in recent months, hard-liners in Mr. Trump’s administration, including Harmeet K. Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for civil rights, argued that the terms were not tough enough on Harvard and pushed to include a cash payment. As a result, The Times has reported, Mr. Trump changed his position to $300 million for job training and $200 million as a fine from $500 million on work force programs.

Mr. Trump’s new billion-dollar demand showed once again how he and others in his administration have relied on an ad hoc approach to setting financial terms with universities.

Last spring, Columbia University was nearing a potential agreement with the government that included no financial penalties. But when Mr. Trump was briefed on the emerging deal, he demanded that the university pay $200 million. Columbia ultimately agreed.

Mr. Trump has also demanded $1 billion to settle accusations of civil rights violations at the University of California, Los Angeles. The university rebuffed the demand, which state leaders, including Gov. Gavin Newsom, decried as a “shakedown.”

While Mr. Trump’s social media posts this week appeared to make a Harvard deal less likely, he has repeatedly spoken about his interest in finalizing a settlement.

Trends in public opinion polling that show Americans have grown increasingly skeptical of the cost and benefits of a college education may ultimately force Harvard and other schools to consider Mr. Trump’s demands, said Eitan Hersh, a political science professor and the director of the Center for Expanding Viewpoints in Higher Education at Tufts University.

“There is some fairly widespread acknowledgment of a problem that needs to be solved,” Mr. Hersh said of the issues higher education faced. “The chaos of the administration makes that more complicated, but I don’t think it changes that dynamic.”

A Harvard Business School graduate was arrested Thursday on fraud charges alleging he swindled fellow alumni of the prestigious school out of over $4 million in a Ponzi scheme, even assuring one investor they would soon “brag” about their “crazy gains” at the school’s reunion.

Vladimir Artamonov, 46, was taken into custody in Elkridge, Maryland, where he lived, and was charged with securities, wire and investment adviser fraud for allegedly carrying out the scheme from September 2021 through February 2024.

An indictment unsealed in Manhattan federal court said Artamonov promised big returns and little risk to dupe former classmates and other alumni into investing with him, telling one investor: “It will be your best investment. The insight is air tight.”

Messages for comment left with Harvard and a lawyer for Artamonov were not immediately returned. Artamonov, appearing before a magistrate judge in federal court in Maryland, was released on $300,000 bail with instructions to have no contact with victims or potential trial witnesses.

The allegations against Artamonov were first revealed in late February 2024 by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who said in a news release then that her office learned about the fraud after one of several dozen investors ended his own life after learning he had lost $100,000.

“Even sophisticated investors can be conned by fraudsters, especially when personal relationships and networks are used to build a false sense of trust,” James said.

She said Artamonov “used his alumnus status from Harvard Business School to prey on his classmates and others while seeming legitimate and dependable.”

Artamonov, a 2003 Harvard graduate with a master’s in business administration, used the school’s alumni network to identify investors, authorities said.

The indictment said he promised investors that he could identify securities on the verge of making large gains by spotting public insurance company filings by affiliates of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. prior to public filings made to the Securities and Exchange Commission that are more closely followed by investors.

Instead of following that plan, Artamonov put investor money into risky short-term options, losing millions of dollars, often within days of receiving the money from investors, the indictment said.

It said he repeatedly assured investors that big profits were on the horizon and even promised one investor that it was “almost certain we will make a ton of money” soon and that they would “brag” about their “crazy gains” at the Harvard Business School reunion.

Investors eventually demanded their money back, causing Artamonov to return less than $400,000 by paying original investors with money from new investors or by declining to reimburse them at all, the indictment said.

It said Artamonov lost most of the money or spent tens of thousands of dollars on items such as lodging, food and alcohol, and transportation.

Christopher G. Raia, head of New York’s FBI office, said in a news release that Artamonov “exploited the prestige of a well-respected university and investment company to unlawfully rocure investments, which he used to pay for personal expenses.”

U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said Artamonov “betrayed investors, including friends and former Ivy League classmates.”

To account for Harvard’s terminated grants, we used data from multiple sources: letters from government agencies included in court filings by the university; lists of terminated grants provided by the Department of Health and Human Services and the National Science Foundation; a crowd-sourced list of grant terminations at Grant Watch; and some additional data from internal university sources.

Our charts show the total obligated amount for each grant using data from USAspending.gov, which reflects the funds that the government has set aside for each project. In cases where a grant was extended or renewed, this figure typically accounts for the entire lifetime of the grant to date, and not just the most recent renewal. Obligated funds for multiyear grant awards are typically paid out gradually over a number of years. Our charts do not account for this outlayed spending — the portion of these obligated funds that have been paid by the government so far — because there are substantial lags in this spending data for some agencies. This analysis did not include the $100 million or so in federal contracts, separate from grants, much of which also fund scientific research.

BOSTON – A new study out of Harvard Business School shows reason for more women managers in the workplace.

Lack of communication between managers and their employees can lead to poor productivity and customer dissatisfaction. However, the study found female managers are better equipped to build rapport among mixed-gender teams, leading to better organizational performance and greater employee retention.

Researchers at Harvard Business School analyzed data from a fast-food chain in Colombia. They found that cisgender men managed other men well and cisgender women managed other women well, but when the staff was mixed, women “outshined” the men when it came to rapport, by creating optimal schedules, looking out for the workers’ interests, and discussing and reaching goals.

They say women are poorly represented at the management level in almost every industry, and this study provides additional evidence that giving more women opportunities to lead can improve productivity.

For many people, retirement planning is all about money: how to invest, how much to save, when to claim Social Security, how to best withdraw from accounts.

Finances in retirement are an acute fear. About 2 in 3 people worry more about running out of money than about death, according to a recent poll by Allianz Life.

Yet, there’s a notable lack of attention and concern given to the social aspect of retirement, experts said.

It’s a facet of retirement planning that’s almost “hidden in plain sight,” said Robert Waldinger, a clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Waldinger is the fourth director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, which began in 1938. The study, the longest-running of its kind, has tracked thousands of Americans throughout their lives and across different generations for the past 86 years.

A core, and perhaps surprising, finding: Having good relationships — whether with partners, friends, family or others — is the “strongest predictor” of living a long, healthy and happy life into old age, more so than health factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol, Waldinger said.

Money is the “obvious” focus when it comes to retirement planning, Waldinger said.

“[But] if you want to be happy, it’s mostly not about the money,” he added.

Put another way: “Social connections are really good for us” and “loneliness kills,” Waldinger said in a 2015 TED Talk titled “What makes a good life?” It’s one of the most-viewed TED Talks.

How stress affects our health

Relationships play a big role in preventing and relieving stress.

When someone is stressed, their body revs up into a fight-or-flight mode, triggering reactions such as an increased heart rate, Waldinger said.

Having someone to talk to or even complain to at the end of the day about a particular stressor helps the body calm down and return to equilibrium, he said.

Someone who’s unable to do that stays in a low-level fight-or-flight mode. Higher levels of stress hormones such as cortisol build up, breaking down body systems, increasing inflammation and contributing to health issues such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and weakened immune function, Waldinger said.

Loneliness and isolation are stressors in and of themselves, he said.

Stressors “break down our bodies in all kinds of ways,” said David Sbarra, a psychology professor and director of the Laboratory for Social Connectedness and Health at the University of Arizona.

People also often try to regulate the negative effects of stress via drinking, smoking or doing drugs, which are other pathways to adverse health impacts, Sbarra said.

By contrast, having broader social networks and more social activity delays and slows cognitive decline, for example, Waldinger said. The Harvard study found that married people also lived longer than their single counterparts — five to 12 years longer for women and seven to 17 years longer for men, on average.

Why retirement can be stressful

The transition into retirement “is a period of stress,” Sbarra said.

For one, there’s an “upheaval” associated with identity transition. Retirees close one chapter of their lives and must choose the contours of their next chapter, he said.

That stress can become chronic if people don’t manage the transition well, and physical health may suffer as a result, he added.

Relationships and the quality of those connections “play a key role” in helping regulate stress, Sbarra said. However, the bulk of many people’s close relationship needs may be met at work, he said. In such cases, retirement strips away those interactions.

“Some people say, ‘It’s too late for me'” to make new social connections, Waldinger said.

“One of the things we know from study: It isn’t too late. People make all kinds of new connections and friendships when they’re older, in all phases of life,” he added.

Experts say finances do have a bearing on happiness in retirement, to a point.

“You need to have your [financial needs] met,” Waldinger said.

Just as the lack of strong social connections is a cause of stress, so is the lack, or perceived lack, of financial resources, said Yochai Shavit, director of research at the Stanford University Center on Longevity.

However, if the goal of retirement is to live a happy, healthy and fulfilling life, social capital is as important as financial capital, he said.

“We are very strategic when it comes to our money and planning for retirement, and perhaps not strategic in the same way … when it comes to planning our social and emotional capital,” Shavit said.

3 steps to strengthen your relationships

The Harvard study shows it’s not just the quantity of social connections that’s important; it’s the quality of your close relationships that matters, Waldinger said.

For example, living amid conflict is “really bad” for our health, he said in his TED Talk. A “high-conflict” marriage without much affection is perhaps worse for health than getting a divorce, for example, he said.

Further, loneliness is a subjective experience, he told CNBC. Some people are introverts who may only need one or two meaningful relationships, for example.

“You can be lonely and have a ton of people around you, or not be lonely and be a hermit on a mountain,” he said.

Near-retirees or retirees who want to assess the quality of their relationships and/or strengthen their existing connections can take three steps, Waldinger said.

First, ask: Do I have enough people I feel connected to in my life? Am I connected to others in the way I want to be?

“It’s really [about] checking in with yourself,” Waldinger said.

Second, assess whether you can improve relationships with the people already in your life whom you value and enjoy spending time with. Can you do more with what you already have?

This could be anyone: perhaps a sibling, friends or romantic partner. For example, you could replace screen time with people time, liven up a relationship by doing something new together, such as long walks or date nights, reach out to a family member you haven’t spoken to in years. Even talking to someone on the phone, or sending a text or e-mail, can help.

“It doesn’t have to be heavy lifting,” Waldinger said.

Third, assess whether you can form new connections.

Among the easiest and quickest ways to do this is by doing something you enjoy or care about alongside people you don’t know yet, Waldinger said.

For example, join a gardening club, political campaign, church group or a campaign to prevent climate change, he said.

It becomes easier to start conversations with new people because you have this thing in common, he added.

The people in the Harvard study who were happiest in retirement were the ones who actively worked “to replace workmates with new playmates,” Waldinger said in his TED Talk.

“Relationships are messy and they’re complicated, and the hard work of tending to family and friends, it’s not sexy or glamorous,” he said during that TED Talk. “It’s also lifelong. It never ends.”

BOSTON – When it comes to life expectancy, the gender gap is widening even further.

A new study from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the University of California, San Francisco finds that the average American was projected to live about three fewer years in 2021 than in 2019, and the life expectancy gap between women and men grew.

Women are now estimated to live nearly six years longer than men, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Men spent more time in risky environments such as work, jails, and homeless shelters. They were less likely to seek medical care and were more likely to suffer complications. But so-called “deaths of despair” also are playing a role, namely alcoholism, overdoses, and suicide, which affect more men than women, suggesting men could benefit from additional mental health and substance abuse outreach.

Now as the burden of COVID-19 eases, researchers want to reassess life expectancy trends post-pandemic.
