“There’s plenty of liquidity in the system if the world continues to remain as optimistic,” Solomon said. “We are definitely in a moment where there’s more greed than there is fear.”

Solomon’s comments come as investors prepare for what will be one of the busiest periods for equity issuance in years. The two leading providers of AI models, as well as SpaceX, which includes Elon Musk’s AI company, could go public at trillion dollar-valuations just as other firms are seeking vast sums to fund data centers, chips and infrastructure, raising questions about whether markets can absorb the supply.

Solomon, whose bank is playing a key role in several of the deals, downplayed those concerns. Alphabet’s recent stock performance after announcing plans for an $80 billion equity raise was proof that markets are still receptive to AI, he said.

“The stock is trading very well,” Solomon said. “This is the first actual concrete data point for bringing something of this scale, and it’s encouraging.”

Robust equity and debt markets are prompting companies to raise money while markets are allowing it, he said.

“When capital’s available, if you’re capital consumptive and it’s available, take the capital,” Solomon said.

Solomon acknowledged that the fundraising wave is unprecedented in size, but argued that record levels of wealth and liquidity across markets support the activity. He also said gains generated by AI companies could create a self-reinforcing cycle as employees and investors recycle profits into taxes and new ventures.

Greed can “turn into fear very quickly, but that doesn’t mean it will,” Solomon said. “Exuberance can go on for big periods of time. … There’s a good chance that we’re earlier in the cycle than later.”

Shares of Tata Power Company fell as much as 7% to their day’s high of Rs 391 on the NSE on Wednesday after it reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 996 crore for the fourth quarter of FY26, down 4% from Rs 1,043 crore recorded in the same period last year.

Revenue from operations during the March quarter declined 13% year-on-year to Rs 14,900 crore, compared with Rs 17,096 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Despite the fall in revenue, EBITDA for the quarter rose 10% to Rs 4,216 crore.

The renewable energy segment continued to remain a major growth contributor. Profit after tax before exceptional items from the renewables business rose 59% year-on-year to Rs 1,994 crore in FY26, while Q4 profit stood at Rs 406 crore. The solar manufacturing business’ FY26 profit more than doubled to Rs 857 crore. The company attributed the increase to ramp-up in module and cell manufacturing as well as yields exceeding 95%. The rooftop solar business reported a 150% jump in annual profit to Rs 499 crore.

Tata Power shares: Should you buy, sell or hold?

Brokerage firm Goldman Sachs has maintained a “Sell” rating on Tata Power with a target price of Rs 300, a downside of 28%. The brokerage said Tata Power’s Q4 profit after tax came in 13% below estimates and remained broadly flat year-on-year, impacted by weaker renewable energy generation and lower contribution from joint ventures. While the brokerage sees strong long-term growth visibility in rooftop solar and distribution, it flagged renewable energy generation execution as a key risk amid curtailments and transmission constraints. It also said the stock’s current valuation already factors in much of the optimism, with Tata Power trading at a premium to its historical price-to-book valuation.

Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal Financial Services has maintained a “Buy” rating on Tata Power with a target price of Rs 490, implying an upside potential of around 17%. The brokerage highlighted that rooftop solar installations doubled year-on-year to nearly 1.7 GW in FY26, with management expecting the rooftop solar business to grow at least 50-60% in FY27 while targeting a 20% market share over the next three years. Motilal Oswal also pointed to strong growth in the cell and module manufacturing business, where EBITDA more than doubled in FY26, and noted that the company has guided for renewable energy commissioning of 2.5 GW each in FY27 and FY28.

Live Events

Brokerage firm JM Financial has reiterated its “Buy” call on Tata Power and retained a target price of Rs 485, indicating a potential upside of nearly 16%. The brokerage said the company’s key growth drivers remain its 4.9 GW cell and module manufacturing facility, strong momentum in the rooftop solar business backed by a healthy order book, and steady performance at Odisha discoms. JM Financial also noted that the operationalisation of the Mundra plant following the supplementary power purchase agreement with Gujarat is expected to support growth, with the brokerage forecasting a FY26-28 CAGR of 13% in revenue, 14% in EBITDA and 19% in profit after tax.

Fixed income revenue fell 10% in the first quarter, coming in $910 million below analysts’ expectations, according to StreetAccount data. It was an unusually large miss for one of Goldman’s flagship Wall Street businesses.

“It was basically just a function of the overall environment making markets,” CFO Denis Coleman told an analyst on Monday after the bank’s earning report. “We remain actively engaged with clients, but our performance in rates and mortgages was relatively lower.”

But as nearly all of Goldman’s rivals, including JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Citigroup, posted blockbuster results for first-quarter fixed income in the days that followed, one thing became clear to Wall Street: Goldman Sachs’ vaunted fixed income traders had underperformed.

JPMorgan saw fixed income trading revenue jump 21% to $7.1 billion, the bank’s second-biggest haul ever. Morgan Stanley, where fixed income is less a priority than equities, posted a 29% jump in the bond business. Citigroup saw bond trading revenue jump 13% to $5.2 billion.

Since before the 2008 financial crisis, when Lloyd Blankfein led Goldman Sachs, the firm’s fixed income division had been the envy of Wall Street. Goldman was known for its trading prowess, a reputation forged in periods of dislocation when its desks generated outsized gains. The bank’s identity as a trader’s firm — one expected to outperform in turbulent times — has endured in the decade-plus since.

That makes the first-quarter stumble particularly notable.

“It seems that something went wrong at Goldman in fixed income,” said veteran Wells Fargo analyst Mike Mayo, who called the bank’s results “worst-in-class.”

“I’d imagine that at Goldman, a fire is being lit under the traders, managers and risk overseers in FICC after such an underperformance,” Mayo said in an interview with CNBC, using an acronym standing for fixed income, currencies and commodities, the formal name for that business.

The prevailing theory is that Goldman was caught offsides on trades tied to interest rates in the first quarter, according to several market participants who asked for anonymity to speak candidly.

That’s because of the positioning that many Wall Street firms had at the start of this year, when markets were expecting the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates at least twice in 2026, these people said.

But after the price of oil surged with the advent of the Iran war, roiling expectations for inflation, the markets began pricing those cuts out, with some investors even bracing for the possibility of rate hikes this year.

Fixed income was the sole blemish on a quarter in which Goldman Sachs exceeded expectations handily, thanks to the firm’s equities traders and investment bankers. Despite the earnings beat, the firm’s shares dropped as much as about 4% on Monday following the report.

Goldman Sachs declined to comment. But on Monday, CEO David Solomon sought to put the quarter’s performance into context:

“When I look at the scale and the diversity of the business, it’s performing very, very well,” Solomon said during the company’s conference call. “Some quarters, it’s going to be stronger here, stronger there.”

Oil prices are sharply higher after President Donald Trump said yesterday that the U.S. will blockade the Strait of Hormuz. The move came after U.S. and Iranian officials failed to come to an agreement during peace talks in Pakistan over the weekend.

Here’s what to know:

Vice President JD Vance, who led the U.S. delegation to Islamabad, said Sunday that the Iran’s refusal to end its pursuit of nuclear weapons was the key sticking point.

Following Trump’s announcement, U.S. Central Command confirmed in a post on X that its forces would “implement a blockade of all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports” starting at 10 a.m. ET today.

Trump indicated in comments to reporters yesterday that “other nations” would help enforce the blockade, but U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said this morning that his country would not support the effort.

Crude oil prices climbed 7% this morning to re-top $100, and stock futures fell as traders saw little sign of progress in ending the Iran war.

Investing banking fees: $2.5 billion, per StreetAccount

Goldman Sachs is set up to benefit from several trends during the first quarter.

Trading desks across Wall Street have been busy at the start of the year as institutional investors set new positions against the churn of AI-led disruption across sectors.

At the same time, the investment banking rebound is expected to continue, with revenue for the industry set to climb by 10% in the quarter, per Dealogic.

For Goldman Sachs, which gets most of its revenue from its trading and investment banking franchise, the main question analysts will have is about the impact of the Iran war that started on Feb. 28.

Disruptive events that impact the price of commodities — like the Iran conflict has — can sometimes force corporate clients to the sidelines, meaning a delay in mergers activity might have started. At the same time, the churn can lead to greater trading revenues thanks to moves in interest rates, bond prices and currencies.

Shares of the bank have climbed about 3% this year.
