The flagship American Girl Place at Rockefeller Center in New York City feels frozen in time.

The air smells faintly of vanilla. Young girls dart between doll displays clutching miniature shirts and sequined shoes. Beneath glittering chandeliers, the brand’s iconic red boxes line shelves with museum-like precision. Blow dryers hum in the Doll Salon, and downstairs, pink-frosted cupcakes land on cafe tables before dolls sitting upright in their miniature highchairs.

“It feels timeless,” said Jamie Cygielman, global head of dolls for Mattel, the brand’s parent company.

And yet, behind the scenes, the business of American Girl dolls is not what it once was.

As American Girl turns 40, the brand is navigating more modern challenges: digital competition, shifting play patterns and an aging, more cost-conscious customer base.

“The anniversary is at precarious moment for American Girl and the whole doll industry,” said Jaime Katz, an analyst who covers Mattel for Morningstar. “Kids are more digital in play, and the [American Girl] brand has struggled.”

Around a decade ago, at its peak, American Girl was recording more than $600 million in annual sales. By 2023, annual sales had fallen to roughly $200 million — just a third of prior levels.

While American Girl has shrunk back considerably from the mid-2010s, the brand has more recently posted five consecutive quarters of sales growth — one of the few steady performers inside Mattel’s portfolio.

“Growing off a base that’s down more than 60% doesn’t mean the brand is back. It means it’s stabilizing,” Katz told CNBC.

Earlier this month, Mattel reported fourth-quarter sales of $1.77 billion, falling short of Wall Street expectations after holiday demand came in lighter than projected and heavier discounting weighed on margins. Earnings per share likewise fell short, and Mattel issued a lower-than-expect profit forecast for 2026.

Mattel shares have fallen roughly 19% since the Feb. 10 report and are down about 20% over the past year. Citi and JPMorgan downgraded the stock after the results, too.

“People are watching Mattel this year … waiting with baited breath, because they are spending a ton and it seems unlikely they will be bringing in big profits,” Katz said.

Longstanding issues

Even before the Covid pandemic forced American Girl to reduce its retail footprint from about 15 stores in 2019 to seven U.S. locations today, the brand faced mounting competition from lower-priced alternatives at big-box retailers like Target’s “Our Generation” line.

A traditional, 18-inch American Girl typically starts at $135, excluding accessories, which can cost as much as $250 for a bunk bed or $275 for a beach cruiser.

The premium price once signaled to many parents a mark of quality and prestige, said Laura Tretter, co-host of the American Girl Women podcast. But in an inflation-conscious environment, it’s narrowed the customer base, Katz said.

“Parents are more selective about discretionary spending right now,” Katz said. “That price point [for an American Girl doll] looks steep to many households.”

Across the toy industry, companies, including competitors like Hasbro, are grappling with how to get kids interested in their products, particularly amid uneven consumer spending and, recently, trade uncertainty.

“There are so many more things today that a kid might be enticed by to play with,” Cygielman told CNBC. “There’s also more competition today, and we saw in the past that tariffs can make an impact on the toy market, but we adapt.”

For many kids, play has migrated toward tablets, gaming subscriptions and short-form video.

“The definition of ‘toy’ has changed,” Katz said. “A iPad or Nintendo Switch competes directly with a doll. There are simply more claims on the same discretionary dollar.”

Overall, Mattel’s doll and preschool categories have faced steady declines for the last three quarters, even after the halo effect of 2023’s “Barbie” movie. Global dolls sales fell 7% in the latest quarter, while the infant, toddler and preschool segment declined 17%.

Struggling sales for American Girl and Mattel’s Fisher Price brand motivated activist investor Barington Capital in 2024 to push the company to streamline its portfolio and improve returns, floating the possibility of selling off the brands.

“American Girl is not a huge part of Mattel’s overall financial profile,” Katz said. “Still though, for investors, the question isn’t whether the brand is beloved. It’s whether it’s strategically essential. It was a drag on profits.”

Capitalizing on loyalty

Inside the Rockefeller Center store, those industry headwinds feel distant.

On a recent visit, Lisa Kandoski stood gazing at Molly McIntire — the World War II-era heroine adorned with round wire-rimmed glasses, a navy argyle sweater and braids tied in red ribbons — just like the doll Kandoski said her grandmother put under the Christmas tree in 1990.

“It’s not just a doll,” Kandoski, now 40, told CNBC, her eyes misty. “I sort of realized the impact Molly had on me as a kid. She taught me that you could be brave even when the world was scary, that you could ‘do your part’ even when you were small. She shaped who I am.”

That emotional alchemy has defined American Girl since it disrupted the doll industry in 1986. At the time, the market was dominated by either fashion dolls mirroring adulthood or baby dolls to rehearse motherhood.

The original six American Girl characters — Samantha, Kirsten, Molly, Felicity, Addy and Josefina — came with books tackling subjects rarely taught to young kids like child labor or racism, and all dolls treated girlhood itself as a formative stage.

“American Girl remains a moral compass for many of us,” said Tretter of the American Girl Women podcast. “I love that girls today are still getting positive messages about inclusivity, friendship and going through difficult changes.”

Over time, American Girl expanded into publishing, film and destination retail while diversifying its characters, like with the 2026 “Girl of the Year,” Raquel Reyes, a biracial DJ and animal rescuer who helps run her family’s Kansas City paleta shop.

The brand’s whimsical seriousness became a differentiator and fostered generational loyalty, said Justine Orlovsky-Schnitzler, a folklorist and author of “An American Girl Anthology: Finding Ourselves in the Pleasant Company Universe.”

Look no further than the Doll Hospital where white-coated “doctors” triage patients, fit wheelchairs, perform eye exams, and apply miniature casts for doll owners of all ages.

“That’s why people return,” Orlovsky-Schnitzler said. “You’re not just buying plastic and fabric. You’re revisiting a version of yourself.”

And even though the dolls remain preserved in childhood innocence, their original owners, now grown up, keep returning to American Girl through podcasts, memes, cosplay and fan fiction.

Some pass their dolls down to their children. Others buy new ones for themselves.

“There’s something powerful about handing your daughter the doll you once slept beside,” Orlovsky-Schnitzler said. “It’s also just as comforting to go back to the days of your youth with your own doll.”

A growing base

Mattel is battling to convert that nostalgia into broader sales growth.

So‑called “kidult” consumers — adults who buy toys for themselves — have become a coveted demographic. By late 2024, spending on toys for adults 18 and older had surpassed that for children ages 3 to 5, according to market research firm Circana. That cohort continued to drive industry growth in 2025.

Mattel has increasingly sought to monetize its intellectual property through publishing, collectibles, entertainment and digital platforms. In interviews and on calls with investors, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz has said that mobile games and interactive platforms are particularly promising areas.

However, “nostalgia must translate into durable revenue and sales growth,” Katz said. Lean too heavily into adult collectors, and a brand risks “aging alongside its original audience.” Pivot too aggressively toward digital trends, and it “risks diluting what made it distinctive.”

Competitors have been doing the same.
“Nostalgia is an entry point, not the endgame,” Cygielman said. “The question is how we extend that emotional equity into new platforms and new audiences.”

Becky Pepper-Jackson was 11 years old and a mediocre runner when she sued the State of West Virginia over a law that barred transgender girls like her from joining girls’ sports teams.

For the next four years, Ms. Pepper-Jackson’s status on the school track team was in doubt as judges blocked the law, then unblocked it and then blocked it again.

Now 15, she is an accomplished shot-putter and discus thrower. A decision about whether she can compete for her final two years of high school will now fall to the Supreme Court, which on Tuesday will hear her challenge to the West Virginia law that supporters said was intended to ensure fair competition for female athletes.

In an interview, Ms. Pepper-Jackson said she was devastated when the law took effect.

“I want to be able to play on the team with my friends, and that’s all I’ve wanted to do,” she said.

Ms. Pepper-Jackson is the only known athlete in West Virginia who would be subject to the law.

But her case — and a separate matter from Idaho dealing with college sports that the court is also hearing on Tuesday — has implications far beyond her personal sports saga.

Twenty-five other states have enacted similar restrictions since 2020, amid a backlash to transgender students participating in school sports and transgender rights broadly. However the Supreme Court rules this year, the decision could affect all of those states, and the student athletes who seek to play in schools and colleges there.

The outcome may also further influence the national conversation about transgender people in American society. President Trump targeted the community in his last presidential campaign and declared at his inauguration that it would be the “official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female.”

In February, surrounded by young female athletes in uniform, Mr. Trump signed an executive order directing agencies to withdraw federal funding from schools that allow transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports. The next day, the N.C.A.A., which for years had tried to balance fairness with inclusion in college sports, announced it would bar trans women from competing in women’s sports.

The Supreme Court has similarly moved against transgender rights and seems likely to reject the trans athletes’ claims based on recent rulings. After protecting transgender people from workplace discrimination in a 2020 decision written by Justice Neil M. Gorsuch, a Trump appointee, the court in June upheld a Tennessee law that prohibits certain medical treatments for transgender adolescents. In a case they heard in October, the justices also seemed poised to strike down a Colorado law that bars mental health professionals from seeking to change a minor’s gender identity through so-called conversion therapy.

Lawyers for West Virginia and Idaho, the Trump administration and other supporters say the sports laws are needed, claiming transgender girls and women have a competitive edge. Allowing them to compete on girls’ teams, they say, takes away opportunities for female athletes and reverses five decades of progress for women in sports since the passage of Title IX, the civil rights law that bars sex discrimination in schools.

West Virginia’s attorney general, John McCuskey, whose office is defending the law, said the restrictions like the one his state adopted in 2021 were not only constitutional but also “common sense” because men are “bigger, faster and stronger.”

In an interview, Mr. McCuskey, a father of two daughters who play soccer, said, “When you watch your children putting all of this insane and incredible internal effort into being great at something, the idea that their place on one of those teams would be taken by somebody that has a noticeable and obvious unfair advantage does make it personal to me.”

Efforts to bar transgender athletes from women’s sports have seen broad support in polls. A New York Times/Ipsos poll conducted last year found that nearly 80 percent of Americans, including two-thirds of Democrats, opposed allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sports.

The case has attracted the attention of former Olympians, soccer standouts and N.C.A.A. stars, who submitted competing briefs. Some of the athletes urged the court to ensure “a level playing field” for female athletes by limiting participation to people assigned female at birth. Others said the justices should not prevent trans girls and women from experiencing the benefits of being part of a team.

The Idaho law was challenged by Lindsay Hecox, a college student who tried out for the women’s track and cross-country teams and played club soccer. Challenges to both states’ laws argue that the restrictions violate the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection, which requires the government to have valid reasons for treating people differently. Two appeals courts have sided with the students and blocked enforcement of the laws.

A wrinkle in the Idaho case came when Ms. Hecox, now 24 and a senior at Boise State University, moved to withdraw her suit in September, saying she would refrain from playing school-sponsored women’s sports. Ms. Hecox, who receives testosterone suppression and estrogen treatment, cited negative public scrutiny that would distract from her academics and her plans to graduate in May. In response, the justices said they would defer a decision about whether to dismiss her case as moot until after Tuesday’s argument.

In West Virginia, Ms. Pepper-Jackson, who was assigned male at birth, transitioned in third grade. She has legally changed her name, and her birth certificate recognizes her as female. She says that because she takes puberty-blocking medication, she has not gone through typical male puberty and does not have the muscle mass, bone density or hormone levels of boys.

In an interview, Ms. Pepper-Jackson said she was inspired by her two older brothers to join the middle school cross-country team and was crushed when West Virginia’s governor signed the law a few months before tryouts.

With the help of the American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal, she and her mother, Heather Jackson, filed a lawsuit, saying the ban violated Title IX protections against sex discrimination in schools and the 14th Amendment’s equal protection guarantee. Among the questions for the justices on Tuesday is whether the word “sex” under Title IX means only biological sex or includes gender identity.

Ms. Pepper-Jackson’s improvement on the field has made her legal case more challenging, as opponents have argued she has taken opportunities from other girls.

After a lackluster cross-country performance in sixth grade in which, according to her court filings, she regularly finished “near the back of the pack,” Ms. Pepper-Jackson said her coach recommended that she instead try throwing the shot put and discus. Her mother created a practice pit in the backyard, mapping out the precise measurements in the space where an aboveground pool once stood.

Ms. Pepper-Jackson said she stayed late for double practice sessions at school and lifted weights all summer. She carried a broomstick behind her neck to work on keeping her arms up and back straight.

As a freshman at Bridgeport High School, she qualified for the state tournament last May, and placed eighth in shot put and third in discus. West Virginia’s lawyers, citing state athletic statistics, said in just one season, she beat out and “displaced nearly 400 female competitors.”

In response, Ms. Pepper-Jackson said she recognized that there were a limited number of spots for athletes in the championships, but she put in the work to earn one.

“I don’t think they’re understanding how much effort I am truly putting in behind the scenes,” she said in a Zoom interview, with her mother and two rambunctious Great Danes in the background. “I don’t think they care.”

A teammate who initially beat Ms. Pepper-Jackson in throwing competitions later objected to her participation after Ms. Pepper-Jackson outperformed her.

In a filing at the Supreme Court, Adaleia Cross, 17, said she was angry and discouraged that Ms. Pepper-Jackson had “taken her spot” in a 2023 competition.

Ms. Cross said she was initially reluctant to speak out for fear that she would be labeled transphobic, but decided to do so in part because she alleged that Ms. Pepper-Jackson had made vulgar remarks in the middle school locker room, making her feel embarrassed and fearful.

The Supreme Court, like all appellate courts, is not supposed to consider facts and allegations, like Ms. Cross’s, that were not part of the record in the lower courts.

Ms. Cross and her family declined to be interviewed but have shared their stories on a website maintained by her lawyers. They are represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom, the Christian conservative legal organization that is also assisting the attorneys general from Idaho and West Virginia.

The middle school investigated Ms. Cross’s complaint in 2023 and concluded that the allegations “could not be substantiated,” according to a letter from the school system’s lawyer reviewed by The New York Times.

Ms. Pepper-Jackson denied the allegations as well.

“I was not raised like that,” she said.

Ms. Pepper-Jackson’s case first reached the Supreme Court on an emergency basis in 2023. The justices at that time issued a brief order allowing her to compete while litigation continued. The order gave no reasons. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr. dissented.

In April, a divided panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit said the law could not be enforced against Ms. Pepper-Jackson.

The majority found that the law discriminated in violation of Title IX by preventing trans girls — but not trans boys — from participating on teams consistent with their gender identity and did so “regardless of whether any given girl possesses any inherent athletic advantages based on being transgender.”

Given that Ms. Pepper-Jackson had not gone through male puberty, allowing her to play on a boys’ team would require her to share the field with boys who are “larger, stronger and faster than her because of the elevated levels of circulating testosterone she lacks,” wrote Judge Toby J. Heytens, joined by Judge Pamela A. Harris.

In dissent, Judge G. Steven Agee said Ms. Pepper-Jackson’s participation had taken opportunities from girls who were born female, precisely what West Virginia’s law was intended to prevent.

“Allowing transgender girls — regardless of any advantage — as participants in biological girls’ sports turns Title IX on its head and reverses the monumental work Title IX has done to promote girls’ sports from its inception,” he wrote.

Throughout the litigation, West Virginia’s lawyers have said Ms. Pepper-Jackson could instead compete on the boys’ track and field team. But she insists that is not an option. Her reasoning: “I’m not a man.”

The Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya participated in the policy and research forum titled “Unlocking the Gender Dividend: Driving Policy Change Through Knowledge,” hosted by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Sri Lanka today (August 27) at Galle Face Hotel.

During the event four landmark reports were officially presented to the Prime Minister that provide the policymakers, researchers, and civil society, with critical evidence and policy recommendations to address persistent gender inequalities and emerging challenges in Sri Lanka and create a more inclusive and equitable society, the Prime Minister’s Media Division said.

Delivering the keynote address, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya noted that every woman and girl must be able to live with dignity, feel safe, and contribute fully to the life of this country. She added that when this is true, the whole nation moves forward.

The Prime Minister further highlighted the unpaid care work that falls disproportionately on women, which eventually leads to an imbalance in raising participation and enabling women to balance work and caregiving is essential for national progress, it added.

The event was attended by Kunle Adeniyi, Representative of UNFPA Sri Lanka, Member of Parliament, Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe, the secretary to the Ministry of Women and Child affairs.

Mattel shares gained 4% in Friday trading following a letter sent to Mattel on Thursday, which was first reported by The Wall Street Journal. The toymaker’s shares trade at roughly the same level as they did 20 years ago. Barington has an undisclosed stake in the company.

American Girl and Fisher-Price, two iconic brands, are among the most popular in their respective markets.

While the broader market has grown for the kind of toys that Fisher-Price makes, Barington’s James Mitarotonda said in the letter to CEO Ynon Kreiz that Fisher-Price’s revenue has fallen from $1.9 billion in 2015 to less than $1 billion by 2023.

Mitarotonda said that if Mattel cannot stymie continued erosion in both Fisher-Price and American Girl, which has suffered similar declines, the company “may not be the right owner of these brands.”

Barington suggested the company should “immediately” explore strategic alternatives for those two segments.

“We believe that these brands are now detracting from the success at Mattel’s other segments and hurting shareholder value,” Mitarotonda said in a release.

A Mattel spokesperson said in a statement to CNBC, “We look forward to engaging with Barington as we do with all our shareholders. We welcome this initial outreach and we are reviewing their letter.”

The letter also highlighted “excessive” stock-based compensation that was higher than a group of peer companies, and claims Mattel continues to add back share-based compensation to the company’s adjusted EBITDA, a practice Barington called “shocking.”

Barington also told Kreiz that the company should pause continued merger and acquisition efforts in favor of a $2 billion share repurchase operation, which would be an expansion of the company’s existing share buyback program, and elevate lead director Michael Dolan to chair, a position Kreiz currently holds.

Dolan is the former CEO of Bacardi, IMG and Young & Rubicam, an advertising firm.

Barington has pursued campaigns at Bath & Body Works, Darden Restaurants and Chico’s. It was founded in 2000.

BALTIMORE — If Kent Island has an icon, it is Wally Dashiell. In just a few days, she will celebrate her 100th birthday, and for more than 60 of those years, she taught dance to thousands of grateful students.

If that wasn’t enough, for well over 30 years, she has broken records and won gold at Senior Olympics contests around the country. In fact, just this summer, at the age of 99, she competed in track and field at the games in Pittsburgh.

The moment I saw this picture by the Baltimore Banner’s Jessica Gallagher of Wally decked out in her ribbons at the age of 99, I knew I had to meet her.

Wally Dashiell, 99, of Maryland, shows off her medals after competing in javelin, shot put and discus during the National Senior Games at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center, Thursday, July 13, 2023

If you’re attending the big party on Kent Island this Saturday to celebrate Wally’s 100th, I recommend bringing chocolate!

Wally is a cancer survivor. She’s had knee and hip replacement surgery and is in the Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. And she’s already planned her own funeral.

One of her directives: each person who attends will be given one of her thousands of medals to remember her by.

For thousands of young dancers Wally’s home in Stevensville, Kent Island, was where you went to learn to dance. Wally decided it was time to close the studio in 2014, but she still lives on the second floor, surrounded by memories of a remarkable life.

Born in Germany in 1923, it was at a post-war dance she met American Army Sgt. George Dashiell.

“He comes up and asks me if I would like to dance,” Wally said. “So we danced all night. And then he asked me if I could meet him again and we did, and we did, and we did.”

And they moved to his native Cambridge, Maryland. Soon after, in 1948, Wally opened a dance studio. At first, all her students were white.

“One day a lady came, a Black lady with her daughter, and wanted to know if I could teach her and I told her if I do I will lose my white students because, Cambridge, you have never seen such a segregated town,” she said. “I didn’t know what segregation was. From Germany? I had never heard of it.”

And she didn’t like it. So Wally went against local prejudice and, by 1960, fully integrated her academy and every performance.

There was a clause in there: “I do not segregate,” she said. “I only lost about two or three students.”

Wally decided to stop teaching at the age of 89, but she was already a star competitor in another field of athleticism.

Wally has always been athletic. In 1996, she was chosen to run from Baltimore to Annapolis with the Olympic torch.

She was skiing slalom into her 70’s, and winning! On a lark, she entered the Senior Olympics in swimming in 1991.

To my surprise, I came in second and I had my silver, and I went, ‘oh, I like that,” she said. “And then I went out and looked at the track, and they were having so much fun with the javelin, and I thought ‘oh, I like that better than swimming in that dumpy pool.'”

Track and field became her sport.

“Discus, javelin, shot put and hammer – later on, they added hammer, and I loved that,” Dashiell said.

In the over 30 years since, Wally has consistently broken national records, including her favorite, the hammer throw, which she had to give up at 97 because of her vision.

Hundreds and hundreds of medals fill Wally’s home. She competes against people in her age group and when she was 90, she ended up in a league of her own.

“We had a nice group of about 5 or 6 and we stayed together, and gradually every year one of them would drop out, which was sad,” she said. “I ended up the only one in the 100 age group. I’m not surprised.”

Wally thinks part of the reason she is so healthy and is about to celebrate this important birthday is because she continues to do things like the senior games.

Here’s her advice:

“Don’t give up. Keep going. Be active. Eat healthy,” Wally said. “Eat healthy. That means a lot of chocolate to me.”

A rabid beaver bit a young girl while she was swimming in a northeast Georgia lake, local news outlets reported, prompting the girl’s father to kill the animal.

Kevin Buecker, field supervisor for Hall County Animal Control, told WDUN-AM that the beaver bit the girl on Saturday while she was swimming off private property in the northern end of Lake Lanier near Gainesville.

The girl’s father beat the beaver to death, Beucker said.

Don McGowan, supervisor for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division, told WSB-TV that a game warden who responded described the animal as “the biggest beaver he’s ever seen.” The warden estimated it at 50 or 55 pounds, McGowan said.

The beaver later tested positive for rabies at a state lab.

“Once that rabies virus gets into the brain of the animal – in this case, a beaver – they just act crazy,” McGowan said.

Hall County officials have put up signs warning people of rabies. They’re asking nearby residents to watch for animals acting abnormally and urging them to vaccinate pets against the viral disease.

“We bring our kids here probably once a month during the summer. It’s awful to think something could happen to a child,” beachgoer Kimberly Stealey told WSB-TV.

State wildlife biologists said beaver attacks are rare. They said the last one they remember in Lake Lanier was 13 years ago.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, beavers were almost eliminated from the state nearly a century ago because of unregulated trapping and habitat loss, but restoration efforts by wildlife officials over the decades have proven successful.

“Today, beavers are thriving statewide, harvest demands are low, and there is no closed season on taking beavers in Georgia,” DNR said.

What are the symptoms of rabies?

Rabies is a viral disease in mammals that infects the central nervous system and, if left untreated, attacks the brain and ultimately causes death.

If a person is infected, early symptoms of rabies include fever, headache, and general weakness or discomfort. There may be a prickling or itching sensation in the area of the bite. As the disease progresses, more specific symptoms will begin to show, including insomnia, anxiety, confusion, and agitation. Partial paralysis may set in and the person may have hallucinations and delirium. They’ll experience an increase in saliva, difficulty swallowing, and hydrophobia (fear of water) because of the difficulty swallowing.

How is rabies transmitted?

Rabies is transmitted to humans and other mammals through the saliva of an infected animal that bites or scratches them. The majority of rabies cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention each year occur in wild animals like raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes.

In the United States, laws requiring rabies immunizations in dogs have largely eradicated the disease in pets but some dogs, particularly strays, do carry the disease. This is especially important to keep in mind when visiting other countries where stray dogs can be a big problem, Hynes says.

Parents should keep in mind that children are at particular risk for exposure to rabies.

What is the treatment for rabies?

If your doctor decides you need rabies treatment, you will receive a series of post-exposure anti-rabies vaccinations. The shots are given on four different days over a period of two weeks. The first dose is administered as soon as possible after exposure, followed by additional doses three, seven and 14 days after the first one.

The CDC also recommends a dose of human rabies immune globulin (HRIG), which is administered once at the beginning of the treatment process. It provides immediate antibodies against rabies until the body can start actively producing antibodies of its own in response to the vaccine.
