Huawei Technologies Co. said it has come up with a new pathway to shorten its gap with industry leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., potentially achieving a breakthrough in making advanced semiconductors without cutting-edge equipment.

Right now there is about a five-year gap between what TSMC is capable of and what Huawei together with its manufacturing partner Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. can produce. Huawei will start making 1.4-nanometer chips by 2031 with its own “LogicFolding” technology, Huawei’s semiconductor chief He Tingbo said in a rare public appearance during a chip conference on Monday, while TSMC has said that it will begin mass production of the same product in 2028.

The executive said that her team has found a way for “sustainable evolution.” She told reporters after her speech on Monday that Huawei can advance its chipmaking prowess significantly without the use of Dutch supplier ASML Holding NV’s extreme ultraviolet lithography machines, widely considered as essential for production of cutting-edge semiconductors that China doesn’t have access to.

He added that the Kirin mobile chips to be launched this fall will be the first to adopt the LogicFolding architecture, which helps boost performance of a chip by increasing the number of transistors it carries and optimizing data transmission speed.

“This year we have prepared a surprise for the whole industry. Not saturation, not continuation, but a big leap ahead,” she said.

The Star 50 Index in Shanghai, which includes several major Chinese chip firms, rose to a record after He’s announcement on Monday. Shares of SMIC rose more than 18% while foundry peer Hua Hong Semiconductor Ltd. surged by the daily limit of 20%.

If Huawei can manage to make 1.4nm semiconductors in large quantities, it means it’s defying the industry consensus that ASML’s EUV lithography machines are necessary to mass-produce chips that are 5nm or more advanced. Such semiconductors are used to power the most sophisticated AI technologies.

The nanometer measure is used to indicate the size of transistors on a chip. The smaller a transistor becomes, the more can be fitted on a chip, which in turn will become more powerful. ASML’s EUV machines are seen as essential in shrinking transistors, and they are used widely by leading global chipmakers including TSMC, Samsung Electronics Co. and Intel Corp. for mass production.

Huawei’s He added that the LogicFolding architecture is based on Huawei’s own Tau Scaling Law, a principle the Chinese company is adopting to rival Moore’s Law, the guideline for the global chip industry for decades. Moore’s Law, named after Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, is an extrapolation that the numbers of transistors in a chip will roughly double about every two years, though many in the industry including He say the cadence has been slowing down in recent years.

He said that Huawei’s scaling efforts based on Moore’s Law plateaued six years ago after U.S. export controls hit. Her team then proposed a new “time scaling” method to replace the global industry’s gold standard. Huawei’s new principle appears to focus on boosting data transmission speed by transistors to compensate for a lack of state-of-the-art equipment to shrink those components significantly further.

“We saw time scaling can deliver strong benefits across devices, circuits, chips and systems,” He said, adding that Huawei has designed and made 381 chips over the past six years based on the Tau Scaling Law. Huawei in a separate statement said that the company is dubbing its new principle “Her’s Law,” in a nod to its chip chief.

The Tau Scaling Law is a summary of some current trends in the semiconductor industry, but it appears to be the first attempt by a company to formulate these ideas into a coherent theory, according to Kitty Fok, managing director of research firm IDC China.

“It may also provide a new reference point for China’s semiconductor industry in overcoming process-node constraints,” Fok said.

The Shenzhen firm has previously filed for patents that show it is trying so-called self-aligned quadruple patterning, or SAQP, that may allow it to produce advanced chips without ASML’s EUV machines. Quadruple patterning is a technique for etching lines on silicon wafers multiple times to increase transistor density — and therefore performance.

While Huawei has continued to improve its technologies over the past few years, it is unclear whether it will indeed be able to reach the cutting edge of chipmaking by experimenting with a non-mainstream path.

Huawei has been at the vanguard of Beijing’s semiconductor self-sufficiency drive following a years-long U.S.-led, multinational campaign to tighten exports of advanced chips and gear that have somewhat curbed China’s AI progress.

In September, Huawei announced a three-year roadmap to roll out a series of AI chips to fill in the vacuum left by Nvidia Corp., whose most advanced semiconductors are banned for China.

On-chain data shows the Ethereum network is nearing in on the 190 million holders milestone, hosting more than triple the userbase of Bitcoin.

Ethereum Has Been Widening Its Adoption Gap To Bitcoin

In a new post on X, on-chain analytics firm Santiment has shared how the various top networks in the digital asset sector like Bitcoin and Ethereum currently compare against each other in terms of the Total Amount Of Holders. This indicator measures, as its name implies, the total number of addresses on a given blockchain that hold a non-zero balance.

When the value of this metric rises, it means new wallets with a balance are popping up on the network. Such a trend can arise due to a number of reasons, like new investors coming into the market or old investors who had sold earlier making a return. Existing users creating new wallets for privacy purposes can also naturally contribute to the trend.

In general, whenever the Total Amount Of Holders goes up, all of these factors could be considered to be at play at once. In other words, some net adoption of the cryptocurrency could be assumed to have occurred.

On the other hand, the indicator going down suggests some users are clearing out their wallets on the blockchain, potentially because they have decided to exit from the market.

Now, here is the chart shared by Santiment that shows the trend in the Total Amount Of Holders for eight major cryptocurrencies:

Looks like ETH has a massive lead over the rest | Source: Santiment on X

As displayed in the above graph, the coin ranked the highest in terms of holders is Ethereum, with about 189.5 million in non-empty addresses present on the network. This is a massive amount, and it’s only been growing recently.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin has witnessed a flat trajectory in its Total Amount Of Holders over the last few months, implying that the adoption of the cryptocurrency has stalled while Ethereum has continued to attract users. Currently, BTC has 59.1 million wallets with a balance, which is less than a third of the size of ETH’s userbase.

Ethereum’s dominant position in the metric is down to the rich DeFi ecosystem that the blockchain hosts thanks to its smart contracts feature. Speaking of ETH’s ecosystem, stablecoins make a major part of it and the most dominant among them are USDT and USDC, both of which appear on this list with 13.6 million and 6.8 million holders, respectively.

Among the altcoins, Dogecoin beats XRP and Cardano with a Total Amount Of Holders value of around 8.3 million.

ETH Price

At the time of writing, Ethereum is trading around $2,270, down over 2% in the last 24 hours.

When Trek CEO John Burke talks about women’s cycling, he frames the company’s investment less as a marketing campaign and more of a question of corporate purpose.

“One of the things we do with the bike company is we try and make a difference in the world,” he told Fortune.

Since its founding in 1976 in Waterloo, Wis., that philosophy has taken a measurable form. It came into full view between 2021 and 2025, when Trek paid out approximately $308,000 (about €263,000) to match prize money for women cyclists at races where female winners were awarded less than their male counterparts.

The company’s most pointed example came at the 2021 Paris-Roubaix Femmes, when the women’s winner received €1,535 (roughly $1,815 in 2018) while the men’s winner received €30,000 (about $35,490 in 2018).

Trek covered the difference, and since then, has continued doing so at other races.

The amount Trek needs to pay out has been decreasing, according to the company, because more race organizers have begun establishing equal prize purses for men and women. That’s in part due to publicity from Trek’s checkwriting and in part due to pressure. Trek’s intervention appears to be doing what it was designed to do: embarrass the old system into changing.

For Burke, the issue became obvious around 2017, when Trek CFO Chad Brown walked into his office after visiting women’s races in Europe.

“He goes, ‘Do you know what’s going on with women cycling?’” Burke said. “He said, ‘I was just over there in Europe, and it’s embarrassing. Most of the women are making less than $10,000 a year. They get secondhand bikes. They stay at s—-y hotels. They’re flown in the night before the race. Nobody cares.’”

Burke responded like anyone who may own a five-decade-old cycling company and who was outraged by the growing publicity surrounding the U.S. women’s soccer team’s salaries. At that time, they had just won the first of two back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles.

“Why don’t we just buy a women’s cycling team?” Burke recalled asking Brown. When Trek was unable to buy one, it started its own.

“We said we’re going to treat women the same way the men are treated,” Burke said. “We’re going to pay them livable wages, we’re going to give them the best equipment, we’re going to give them great coaching. We’re going to take really good care of them the same way we take care of men. And nobody was doing this. This was a revolutionary idea.”

One of the riders Trek signed was Lizzie Deignan, who was pregnant at the time and uncertain about her future in the sport, despite being ranked number one worldwide after getting crowned the 2015 world road race champion.

“I felt incredibly grateful to Trek for the opportunity to join the team, because when I announced that I was pregnant, I didn’t know what my future looked like in the sport,” Deignan told Fortune. “Despite being ranked number one in the world at the time, I didn’t have a secure team.”

What stood out to her, she said, was that Trek did not treat the move as symbolic.

“Trek came in, and there was no tokenism about it,” Deignan said. “They really came in at the top level and gave me an amazing opportunity. And it was really special to be able to win some really iconic races with Trek on my jersey because of that.”

The equal-prize-money effort, Deignan said, was part of a broader set of initiatives that changed the culture around the team. She recalled being approached by a former Trek employee who told her she had received £50 because of Deignan. The employee explained that when the women won races, Trek employees would get money too.

“Because of that, it had this ripple effect of momentum and excitement amongst the Trek employees,” Deignan said. “Simple initiatives like that actually built a really strong foundation and fan base, even within the company.”

Ripple effects

Because men’s cycling teams have been around for much longer, some folks didn’t know about the logistics or even rules of women’s cycling, and have never had the experience of working closely in the sport.

“Old-school staff, who’ve been in the sport for years, who’ve never known anything about women’s cycling, knew that actually they had to get on board with this, because Trek were taking it incredibly seriously,” Deignan said. “So their attitude immediately was about welcoming us and understanding that this was a mutually beneficial relationship.”

Burke said he wasn’t even responsible for Trek’s prize-money matching program—evidence, he says, of the commitment that had become embedded in the company’s culture. He remembered learning that Trek had hosted a World Cup cyclocross race and offered equal prize money.

“We were the only event that did that,” Burke said. “I didn’t make that call, but the team did. Great idea.”

He only learned of Trek topping off prize money at professional races after receiving a note from cyclist Ellen van Dijk.

“She goes, ‘I just want to let you know this is really meaningful, not just in the money, but just in what Trek does,’” Burke said.

That distinction, between the financial value and the signal it sends, is central to Trek’s argument. Burke said companies often try to quantify the return on purpose-driven investments too narrowly.

“To me, you can’t quantify it,” he said. “There’s something about doing the right thing, and there’s something about what do you stand for as a company.”

Burke rejected the idea that every initiative needs a direct return-on-investment calculation.

“At the end of the day, when I’m dead and gone, nobody’s going to say, ‘Well, his return on assets was blank,’” he said. “But they might look back and they said, ‘Trek took a long-term view, and they tried not only to build the best bikes in the world, but they also tried to make a difference.’”

Women’s cycling, he added, is one of the areas he is proudest of.

“The biggest thing that we do is be an example,” Burke said. “That’s how we multiply our impact. The impact that Trek’s made on women’s cycling isn’t the Trek team. It’s all of the teams who saw what Trek was doing, and they made big changes.”

Deignan says those changes are real, but incomplete. Prize money is only one part of the economic gap in women’s cycling. Media coverage, sponsorships, salaries, and the basic ability to train full time still lag behind the men’s side.

“There are definitely still gaps,” Deignan said. “This previous weekend, Paris-Roubaix, for instance, the race that I won, there still wasn’t full TV coverage. Although their fans are growing, they still only get to watch 50% of the race, and that only tells half the story.”

“It always takes, in every sport, the first person to do it,” she said. “I suppose I did similar to that in cycling on a smaller scale, but with the support of Trek from the very beginning.”

For women cyclists, pay is also directly tied to performance. Deignan said women’s cycling has only had a minimum wage in the last five or six years, and that the change is now beginning to raise the level of competition.

“To be a professional athlete in every sense of the word is transformative in terms of performance,” she said. “There’s no way that anybody who is managing all those extra things that come with a second job has the capacity to perform at the same level as someone who’s full time.”

At the end of the day, it was less about Trek doing something to get something in return, and more about the tenacity of being a professional athlete, as Deignan also put it.

“Too many people are focused on the short term and on what they get,” Burke said. “Doing good things builds a brand over a long period of time.”

The partnership comes as more and more shoppers move away from traditional search and toward artificial intelligence platforms for product discovery, forcing retailers to rethink their approach to marketing to ensure they’re staying competitive and not missing out on customer demand.

“It’s not just keyword search anymore, right? It’s conversations, and so we need to be relevant to that,” Gap’s chief technology officer, Sven Gerjets, told CNBC in an interview. “Is it, you know, ‘I’m trying to figure out what to do for a wedding, what are the things I should be looking at?’ Or, ‘I’ve got a job interview, are there some styles I should wear?’ All of those things we need to become relevant to.”

When shoppers are hunting for a new pair of jeans or the perfect oversized hoodie on Gemini, and the platform thinks some of Gap’s products could be a fit, customers will be able to buy products from Gap’s house of brands directly within the platform without having to be redirected to the brand’s website.

The information about the product that is surfaced to shoppers won’t be crawled from Gap’s website but will be details the retailer provided to Gemini in advance so it can control for accuracy, continue to collect customer data and have better control over the customer experience.

If the shopper decides to buy the product, they’ll check out via Google Pay, and Gap will handle the shipping and any other logistics.

Gerjets said Gap is still testing the service’s capabilities but expects to deploy it to customers “imminently.”

In addition, a new AI-powered sizing tool dubbed Bold Metrics and built by Gap will help customers find the right size when shopping online and will also launch soon to shoppers.

Gap’s partnership with Gemini and its gains in customer-facing AI tools give it a competitive edge at a time when winning in specialty retail is harder than ever. The overall fashion market has been growing increasingly fragmented and more competitive.

As long as a retailer’s website has data that an AI platform can read, the company’s products will likely surface in chat results if the platform considers them a fit for a shopper’s inquiry, but there’s a lot of work that retailers need to do to ensure they’re showing up properly.

If a shopper is looking for a sundress on an AI platform, for example, and a company offers a relevant product, but the data isn’t readable by an LLM, the brand could miss out on the sale.

Most major companies are using and implementing AI in a variety of ways, but so far, none of Gap’s primary competitors have announced similar partnerships with Gemini.

Gap’s approach to agentic commerce is a first iteration that’s expected to evolve over time, Gerjets said.

For now, customers won’t be able to link loyalty accounts or spend points on the transaction, he said. That could create some friction for regular customers, but Gerjets said the option could be added down the line.

“We’ll continue to evolve the experience and bring the things forward that the customers want, so that is definitely the roadmap and the future,” said Gerjets. “It’s a very first experience in, I think, a journey that we’re all on to really nail what agentic commerce is for the customers.”

Retail’s AI wars

Gap’s partnership with Gemini comes after OpenAI made similar deals with companies such as Walmart and Etsy only to walk back plans to offer checkout directly within the app.

While the number of people using AI platforms for product discovery is growing, it’s still a small portion of overall shoppers, and the number of customers who will feel comfortable checking out directly within LLMs remains unclear.

Some shoppers may feel wary about putting their credit card information into the platform, while others may prefer to shop directly within a retailer’s app where their store credit card and loyalty points are stored.

Given how long shoppers have been interacting with Google and the fact that it already has customer payment information stored within its system, some shoppers could feel more comfortable using Gemini for checkout versus newer AI platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

In some ways, Gemini’s platform is also more advanced. Google recently released new updates so real-time product data is available to users, preventing challenges such as out-of-stocks and pricing errors. Shoppers will also be able to add multiple items to their carts and connect loyalty memberships in some cases — two features OpenAI has yet to fully crack.

Gerjets said OpenAI and Gemini also have two different protocols for agentic commerce. The “Universal Commerce Protocol,” which Gap is using on Gemini, was designed for merchants to have better control over the overall shopping experience, whereas OpenAI’s “Agentic Commerce Protocol” was designed more for discovery, Gerjets said.

“This space is moving so quickly … We’re all evolving and learning together, and who knows what the space will look like in five years, who will be crowned the victor, or how fragmented the space will be?” Gerjets said. “For us, it’s important that we work with all of them, because we really want to meet our customers where they want to be.”

Historic winter storms and subsequent store closures weighed on Gap’s performance during its holiday quarter and contributed to worse-than-expected results at its portfolio of brands, the retailer said Thursday.

Cold weather, snow and ice throughout much of the U.S. in January led to about 800 temporary store closures at the storms’ peak, contributing to a miss on comparable sales for Old Navy and mixed companywide results, the retailer said.

“Old Navy and all the brands were actually trending better heading into that weather disruption,” said finance chief Katrina O’Connell. “The good news is the trends recovered immediately after those storms passed.”

Across the business, which includes Old Navy, Banana Republic, Athleta and Gap’s namesake banner, the retailer reported mixed fiscal fourth quarter results – missing expectations on the bottom line and meeting consensus on revenue.

Here’s how the retailer did compared with what Wall Street was anticipating, based on a survey of analysts by LSEG:

Earnings per share: 45 cents vs. 46 cents expected

Revenue: $4.24 billion vs. $4.24 billion expected

Gap’s stock fell as much as 9% in extended trading Thursday.

The company’s reported net income for the three-month period that ended Jan. 31 was $171 million, or 45 cents per share, compared with $206 million, or 54 cents per share, a year earlier. During the quarter, Gap’s gross margin was weighed down by tariffs and fell to 38.1%, slightly worse than analysts expected, according to StreetAccount.

Sales rose to $4.24 billion, up about 2% compared to $4.15 billion a year earlier.

Gap’s guidance was largely in line with expectations, but failed to exceed consensus. For the current quarter, it’s expecting revenue to rise between 1% and 2%, compared to expectations of 2%, according to LSEG.

For the full year, the company is expecting sales to grow between 2% and 3%, in line with expectations of 2.5% growth, according to LSEG. Given a $313 million positive legal settlement Gap saw during the current quarter, it issued an adjusted full-year earnings per share outlook. The company said its expecting adjusted earnings per share to be between $2.20 and $2.35, compared to expectations of $2.32, according to LSEG.

Gap did not factor recent changes to tariffs into its outlook because the company believes it’s “premature to plan for a change” as the situation continues to evolve, said O’Connell. Given how much of a hit Gap took from President Donald Trump’s global tariffs, which were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court last month, Gap could issue stronger guidance in the coming quarter because the newly enacted 15% tariff is slightly below the previous rates for many countries.

“If the [current] Section 122 tariffs were to stay in place for the year or expire in July, it should lead to a more favorable outcome versus the outlook we provided today,” said O’Connell. “If 15% were the rate that would stay in place for the balance of the year, that rate is slightly below the current IEEPA rates that are contemplated in our plans, so that could give us a modest benefit to operating income if that scenario were to play out.”

Gap’s choppy results come just over two years into CEO Richard Dickson’s turnaround plan and analysts begin to expect more from the apparel giant. Now that the company has improved profitability, returned to growth and amassed a staggering $3 billion cash pile, Dickson said he’s ready to turn to the next phase of the plan, which is about “building momentum.”

“Our primary focus is going to be on growing our core apparel business, and we’re going to do this through continuous improvement,” said Dickson. “This has all been driven by disciplined execution, which we need to continue to do with better product, better marketing and better storytelling and that’s not easy, but we’re proving that that muscle is getting stronger and stronger now.”

In the meantime, Gap is also turning its sights on growth opportunities for the company, including its expansion into beauty and accessories and its fashion and entertainment platform through the recent appointment of a chief entertainment officer. He said the ventures will begin to really scale next year.

Here’s a closer look at how each brand performed:

Old Navy

Gap’s largest and most important brand saw sales rise 3% to $2.3 billion, with comparable sales also up 3%, well below analyst consensus of 4.3%, according to StreetAccount. Despite the miss, Gap said Old Navy’s “price value equation is resonating with consumers” and it’s continuing to win over shoppers across a wide range of income levels.

Gap

The brightest spot of Gap’s quarter came from its namesake banner, which saw sales rise 8% to $1.1 billion with comparable sales up 7%, far ahead of expectations of 4.6%, according to StreetAccount. Under Dickson, the brand has worked to regain its cultural relevance and is winning over a wide range of generations, including younger, Gen Z shoppers.

Banana Republic

The safari-chic workwear brand posted its third straight quarter of positive comparable sales, which were up 4%, beating expectations of 2.5%. Sales rose 1% to $549 million, reflecting progress in both marketing and product assortment. “Men’s just continues to build momentum. Key items like the traveler pant, our cashmere program, really fantastic outerwear that’s been driving the performance, particularly in the quarter,” said Dickson. “Women’s performance is becoming much more consistent. We’ve had strength in denim skirts and sweaters and as we enter 2026, Banana is really starting to find its momentum.”

Athleta

The athleisure brand saw another quarter of sagging sales, with revenue down 11% to $354 million and comparable sales down 10%. In some ways, the drop reflects an overall sluggish athletic apparel market, but the company has also had a number of strategic missteps, including targeting the wrong customer and offering products that failed to land. Under the brand’s new CEO, Dickson said Athleta has been working on revamping the assortment, bringing back customer favorites and dialing up innovation.

India Inc has logged its first aggregate earnings upgrade in five quarters, signalling a turn in the corporate profit cycle after a prolonged period of estimate cuts. The upgrade is being driven largely by mid- and large-cap companies, even as small caps continue to see downgrades.

Motilal Oswal’s universe of stocks has seen its FY26 profit after tax (PAT) estimate raised by 2% over the three months ending September 2025 (2QFY26) earnings season, the first upgrade since the end of the June 2024 (1QFY25) results season. This follows a string of cuts of 6%, 3%, 4% and 2% over the preceding four earnings periods, underscoring a clear inflection in the revisions cycle.

Mid-caps have led the recovery with earnings upgrades of 3.1% for FY26, while large caps have also seen healthy upward revisions of about 2%. In contrast, small caps remain under pressure, with aggregate FY26 PAT estimates cut by 5.5%, reflecting the continued stress in the tail of the market.

Sector leaders and laggards

Within the broader universe, the breadth of revisions has been more favorable in the larger sectors, where key profit pools have seen meaningful upgrades. Oil & gas (FY26 PAT up 13%), telecom (up 30%), PSU banks (up 5%), insurance (up 3%) and non‑lending NBFCs (up 2%) are among the biggest gainers on the earnings revision sheet.

Live Events

On the flip side, utilities have seen the sharpest cuts with an 8% downgrade in FY26 PAT, followed by autos at 3% (largely due to Tata Motors; excluding it, auto PAT has been revised up 3%) and healthcare at 3%. Among smaller sectors, chemicals, media, staffing and cement have borne the brunt of downgrades, while small‑cap private banks, insurance, retail and EMS have seen double‑digit earnings cuts.

Outlook: Mid-teens growth despite soft GDP

The brokerage is pencilling in FY26/FY27 earnings growth of 12%/15% for the Nifty 50 and 15%/16% for its coverage universe, implying that the current upgrade phase could be sustained without sharp swings in either direction. It argues that even with nominal GDP growth expected to stay below 10%, mid‑teens corporate profit growth is plausible because PAT is influenced by factors such as leverage, pricing power, cost trends and competition, not just top‑down macro growth.Historical data show that nominal GDP growth explains only about 20% of Nifty 50 PAT growth and an even smaller share for the broader universe, with explanatory power improving to still‑modest levels even in stretch, non‑linear fits. With MOFSL universe PAT growing just 6% in FY25, the low base also increases the probability of stronger mid‑teens earnings expansion over FY26–27.

Profits’ modest share in GDP

India Inc’s profit pool remains relatively small against the size of the economy, adding to the cyclicality of earnings versus the smoother GDP trajectory. Nifty 500 PAT stood at 4.7% of GDP in FY24 and FY25, while total corporate profits (listed plus unlisted) were about 7.3% of GDP, compared with an average India Inc profit‑to‑GDP ratio of roughly 4–5% over the past two decades.

By contrast, US corporate profits have averaged around 11% of GDP between 2020 and 2024, yet even there nominal GDP growth shows limited ability to explain annual profit growth, reinforcing the case for looking beyond macro growth rates when assessing earnings. The report concludes that concerns around lower nominal GDP mechanically dragging down corporate earnings are overstated in the Indian context.

Valuations, positioning and preferred themes

Motilal Oswal remains constructive on equities, expecting Indian markets to claw back their underperformance of calendar 2025 on the back of healthier earnings, supportive domestic macros and an improved geopolitical backdrop. Large caps are described as “not demanding”, with the Nifty 50 trading at a one‑year forward price‑earnings multiple of 21.3 times versus a long‑term average of 20.8 times, while small caps sit at a significant premium.

The brokerage is overweight diversified financials, automobiles, capital goods, IT services and telecom, and underweight energy, metals, utilities and staples. Its preferred large‑cap names include Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, SBI, Infosys, Larsen & Toubro, M&M, Titan, Bharat Electronics, IndiGo, TVS Motor, Tech Mahindra and Indian Hotels, while mid‑cap picks span Swiggy, Dixon Technologies, Suzlon, Jindal Stainless, Coforge, Kaynes Technology, Radico Khaitan, V‑Mart and VIP Industries.

Since the market-wide crash in early October, the Bitcoin price has struggled to resume any significant movement to the upside. The flagship cryptocurrency has continued to fall even deeper into bearish territory, breaching multiple support zones in the process.

With the crypto market’s situation painting a bleak picture, the prevailing sentiment around its leader can hardly be said to be bullish. Interestingly, a recent on-chain evaluation puts into perspective the key players behind Bitcoin’s weakness.

BTC Coinbase Premium Gap Reads –$57

In a recent post on the social media platform X, on-chain analyst Maartunn shared that a substantial portion of sell pressure seen in the Bitcoin market might be from the activities of US investors. This on-chain observation is based on the Coinbase Premium Gap metric, which measures whether US based investors are buying or selling Bitcoin more aggressively than the rest of the global market.

Related Reading

For context, the metric tracks the price gap between Bitcoin on Coinbase and Bitcoin on major offshore exchanges (for example, Binance). A positive reading typically indicates that Bitcoin is more expensive on Coinbase, meaning that US traders are buying aggressively. On the other hand, negative readings are interpreted as increased sales or reduced interest among investors in the United States.

Source: @JA_Maartun on X

According to the analyst, the Coinbase Premium Gap recently dropped to a -$57 reading. As has been earlier implied, this deep negative value reveals that traders from the US are actively offloading, rather than accumulating Bitcoin.

Interestingly, this heightened selling activity accompanies Bitcoin’s price momentum towards lower levels. Thus, it becomes clear that the sell-pressure reflected on Bitcoin’s price is due mainly to the absence of US demand.

BTC Market Outlook

According to historical data, Bitcoin’s direction in the long-term could go either way. While a negative Coinbase Premium Gap reading is usually indicative of a bearish phase in the short term, the long-term perspective is a little less straightforward.

In past cycles, prolonged periods of negative readings have preceded the formations of market bottoms, after which prices saw recoveries to the upside. This often happens when sell-side pressure dwindles, and fresh demand enters the Bitcoin market.

Related Reading

Hence, if this negative reading deepens and there is no fresh demand in the market, the Bitcoin price could follow suit and continue south. However, a reversal of the Coinbase Premium Gap to the upside — pushing it towards neutral or positive levels — could prove pivotal for the world’s leading cryptocurrency.

As of this writing, Bitcoin holds a valuation of $88,260, reflecting no significant price movement in the past day.

Best-known as China’s biggest search business, Baidu has in recent years refocused its business around driverless cars and AI, including a majority-owned subsidiary, Kunlunxin, which designs chips.

Several analysts have upgraded their outlook on Baidu’s stock over the past few weeks, citing the semiconductor business and forecasting the unit will gain more domestic orders.

This month, Baidu laid out a five-year roadmap for its Kunlun AI chips, beginning with the M100 in 2026 and the M300 in 2027. The company already uses a mix of its self-developed chips in its data centers to run its ERNIE AI models, as well as Nvidia products.

Baidu makes money by selling its chips to third parties building data centers as well as renting out computing capacity via its cloud. It has sought to position itself as a so-called “full stack” AI offering with infrastructure made up of chips, servers and data centers, as well as AI models and applications.

And the chip business appears to be gaining traction. Earlier this year, Kunlunxin won orders from suppliers to China Mobile, one of the country’s biggest mobile carriers.

“Kunlunxin has emerged as a leading domestic AI chip developer, focusing on high- performance AI chips for large language model (LLM) training and inference, cloud computing, and telecom and enterprise workloads,” analysts at Deutsche Bank said in a note this month.

While Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) are widely regarded as the most advanced chips for training and running AI, the company has been blocked by the U.S. government from selling its top-end product to China. Beijing has also reportedly been persuading local tech companies not to buy the H20, a less powerful Nvidia chip designed for the Chinese market and greenlit for export.

With Huawei — the leading player through its massive clusters of chips — out of the picture, analysts are suggesting Baidu will fill the void and its chip business is set for explosive growth.

“We believe domestic demand for AI compute in China remains intense, and hyperscalers are increasingly sourcing from local solution providers,” JPMorgan said in a note on Sunday. “We view Kunlun AI chip as one of the best positioned.”

The investment bank analysts forecast Baidu chips sales to increase six-fold to reach 8 billion Chinese yuan ($1.1 billion) in 2026.

Analysts at Macquarie estimate that Baidu’s Kunlun chip unit could be valued at about $28 billion.

Baidu is not alone among China’s tech giants when it comes to self-developed semiconductors. CNBC reported in August that Alibaba is also developing its next-generation AI chip.

AI chip shortages hit China

Baidu’s chip push comes as Chinese tech giants this month said they’re seeing supply shortages.

Eddie Wu, CEO of Alibab, said that “the supply side is going to be a relatively large bottleneck” over the next two-to-three years, referring to components and chips required to build data centers.

Tencent said this month that its 2025 capital expenditure would be lower than initially anticipated. But Tencent President Martin Lau said this this was not because of a lack of demand, but more a shortage of available chips to spend the money on.

“It is not a reflection of our change in AI strategy … It is indeed a change in terms of the AI chip availability,” Lau said.

Part of this shortage has been driven by global demand and resulting bottlenecks in the semiconductor supply chain. But China’s effective block of Nvidia chips has also reduced the supply.

Chinese tech firms have tried to mitigate the shortage by using stockpiled chips, as well as trying to make their AI models more efficient to do more with the semiconductors they have.

Meanwhile, China has its own challenges with manufacturing because its biggest chipmaker SMIC, is unable to compete on the scale and technology with leaders like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. That makes it hard for the China to manufacture enough domestic chips to fill the shortfall.

Like their U.S. counterparts, Chinese tech companies have continually reported strong demand for AI.

“We see that customer demand for AI is and remains very strong. In fact, we are not even able to keep pace with the growth in customer demand … in terms of the pace at which we can deploy new servers,” Alibaba’s Wu said this week.

That gives Baidu an opportunity in China.

“Baidu’s chip push is both a necessity and an opportunity. It’s a necessity, because Chinese platforms can no longer assume a steady diet of US GPUs; opportunity, because there’s now a semi‑captive, multi‑billion‑dollar domestic market for AI hardware that is compliant with both US export rules and Beijing’s self‑reliance agenda,” Nick Patience, practice lead for AI at The Futurum Group, told CNBC.

“If Baidu can ship competitive Kunlun generations on time, it doesn’t just solve its own supply problem — it becomes a strategic supplier to the rest of China’s AI industry.”

The price of Bitcoin closed the historically bullish month of October on a loss for the first time in seven years. While the month started in typical fashion—on a bullish tear, the intense downturn didn’t begin until October 10, when US President Donald Trump threatened new trade tariffs on China.

Now, although the United States and China seem to have found a temporary truce, the cryptocurrency market has been unable to find similar relief. In fact, the latest on-chain data suggests that US investors are still less optimistic about the digital asset market, specifically Bitcoin.

Negative Coinbase Gap Premium Coincides With Massive ETF Outflows

In a November 1st post on social media platform X, crypto analyst Maartunn revealed that the world’s largest cryptocurrency has seen extremely low demand in the United States in recent days. The relevant indicator here is the Coinbase Premium Gap, which has entered a deep red territory in the past few days.

This on-chain metric measures the difference between the Bitcoin price on the US-based Coinbase exchange (USD pair) and the global Binance exchange (USDT pair). A positive difference indicates that the flagship cryptocurrency has a higher value on Coinbase than on Binance.

When the Coinbase Premium Gap is positive, it implies that US-based investors are purchasing Bitcoin aggressively. On the flip side, a negative Coinbase Premium Gap typically indicates heavy selling pressure for the market leader.

According to data highlighted by Maartunn, this on-chain metric is back around -$80, reflecting significant selling pressure from the US institutional players. This reduced demand can be seen with the disappointing performance of the US-based spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in recent days.

Data from SoSoValue shows the Bitcoin ETFs registered a total net outflow of more than $191 million on Friday. This marked the third consecutive day of negative outflows, having seen withdrawals of nearly $500 million each on Wednesday and Thursday.

From a historical perspective, a negative Coinbase Premium Gap is often correlated with periods of sluggish or downward movement for the BTC price. Hence, with the current intense selling pressure from large US investors, it is difficult to see the premier cryptocurrency making a strong recovery in the coming days.

Bitcoin Price At A Glance

As of this writing, the price of BTC sits just above $110,200, reflecting a measly 0.9% jump in the past 24 hours. According to data from CoinGecko, the flagship cryptocurrency is down exactly 1% in the last seven days.

Unlike luxury consumer goods brands such as Cartier or Louis Vuitton, Best Buy needs to appeal to a very wide swath of society. Consumer spending patterns since the pandemic, especially the growing gap in spending power in the U.S. between the most affluent and the least, have the CEO of an electronics mass retailer worried.

“We’re seeing some dispersion between the high income earners and the low income earners,” Corie Barry told the Fortune Most Powerful Women summit on Tuesday in Washington, D.C. “If I just level up, that is probably what keeps me up at night.”

Barry, CEO since 2019, stated that approximately 60% of the gross domestic product depends on the spending of the most affluent segment of U.S. society, double the percentage it was before the COVID pandemic. “It makes it feel like there’s really resiliency in the overall market, that’s an issue, because your lower-income consumers are really struggling,” she continued. Those struggles include credit delinquencies and difficulty navigating inflation and high housing costs.

“Anytime the entire economy is heavily reliant on a small, narrow population of people. That is not good for the long-term health of the economy,” said Barry, whose company took in revenue of $43.5 billion last year.

The solution for Best Buy has been to offer a wider assortment of more affordable items, allowing consumers to continue shopping there. “How can we make sure we have something that will cater to you so that the answer isn’t, no, I can’t afford anything?” said Barry.

Impact of tariffs

Of course, procuring that broader assortment has been made much more difficult by the tariffs imposed on many countries by the Trump administration since April. With less than 10% of the world’s electronics being manufactured in the United States, Best Buy is particularly vulnerable among retailers to the ongoing tariff wars. Barry said that at the start of the year, about 55% of the goods Best Buy sells came from China, and that now that percentage is about 35%, with Mexico and the U.S. picking up a greater share.

One thing Barry says she learned from the COVID crisis was to be upfront with employees, who now number 85,000, about the impact of such significant events beyond their control. Notably, executives must ensure that there is not a constant state of alarm, all while remaining vigilant and responsive to the required changes in how to operate the business.

“They can’t be worried every day about the ups and downs of geopolitical policy,” Barry said. At the same time, executives should be transparent with the troops. “Our people deserve to understand why we’re making the decisions we are, and we are incredibly transparent.”
