When I was a kid in the late 90s, collecting Pokémon cards was a fun hobby. I’d buy packs, hoping to get the rarest “shinies,” or holographic cards. We’d trade with friends and even go to meet-ups to trade cards trying to “catch ’em all” —a catchphrase that defined the franchise that had gone from Nintendo Game Boy to an anime TV show.

When I started collecting again two years ago, things had changed. I’ve stood in line with 100 people in a parking lot outside a toy store for the latest restock of cards. I’ve seen four men huddled around their car talking about how much they could make by selling the trunk of cards they bought during a morning hitting different stores.

New cards can sell out in minutes. People coordinate on X and Discord to know where to go.

There are similar scenes in the U.S. Videos have circulated on social media of people stampeding over each other to get their hands on card packs. There have even been reports of smash-and-grab thefts of stores that stock cards. Prized cards resell at multiples of what they retail for. The rarest can sell for millions of dollars.

It’s a stark contrast from when I could walk into any store and buy however many I wanted.

From 2004 to 2020, Pokémon card prices rose 282%, according to an index compiled by Collectors, which owns card grading agency Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA). Since 2020, prices have risen by an incredible 1,350%, per the index.

Prices have surged and even outperformed traditional asset classes, attracting the attention of people looking to make a quick buck and ultra-high net worth individuals seeking investment assets to protect or grow their wealth.

People who have made money from cryptocurrency are piling into the market, market watchers told CNBC, as prices reach unprecedented levels.

The trading cards followed shortly after.

While Pokémon continued to print cards, their popularity waned in the 2000s. Everything changed with the 2016 release of “Pokémon Go,” a smartphone game that had people chasing across cities to “catch” Pokémon in the real world.

The launch of Nintendo Switch in 2017 and new Pokémon games for the console brought nostalgic millennials and new gamers into the world.

The cards gained particular popularity over the last three years, as The Pokémon Company, which owns the franchise, releases sets with original characters that were introduced in the late 90s.

“It’s kind of like a Pokémon renaissance,” Stephanie Farnsworth, a lecturer in media and communications at the University of Sunderland, told CNBC in an interview.

The Pokémon Company continues to release new sets of cards every few months, with hype being driven this year by special 30th anniversary products.

Other rare cards sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. According to Roy Raftery, a trading card expert at London-based auction house Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s, the high-end market is being driven by people who have made money off crypto.

“People tell me that they’re putting their money in this because they’ve got nothing else to do with it, they made a lot of money on crypto, and they’re just ploughing it into Pokémon,” Raftery told CNBC in an interview.

A sweep of social media sites like X shows users affiliated with crypto often talking about Pokémon cards as if they were stocks, discussing the market and debating whether the latest dip is just a correction.

Raftery said that most of the buyers at his firm are “not genuine collectors” but people “looking for high-end assets” or global businesses looking to buy Pokémon card stock to resell “because of how lucrative the general market is for all these vintage cards.”

Some of the more popular Elite Trainer Boxes, such as the Scarlet & Violet 151 ETB Elite Trainer Box, are on eBay for more than £450.

High-profile sales encourage others to think they can also make money from more common Pokémon cards, Raftery said.

Whatever true fans think of them, they have to compete with scalpers who often rapidly buy up supply. Online retailers can’t cope with traffic, as automated software buys products on behalf of scalpers.

I’ve tried the websites of major U.K. retailers like Argos and John Lewis, and had them crash or suffer checkout issues in the flurry of a new product release. CNBC has reached out to Argos and John Lewis for comment.

This creates a supply crunch that pushes people to buying cards at a higher resale price, the University of Sunderland’s Farnsworth said.

Scalpers create “volatility” and “panic” so people see cards online and think “oh my god, I have to go for this because I’m not going to get it anywhere else,” she added.

David Bellinger, a senior equity analyst at Mizuho, said that the market for cards had changed at “such a torrid and quick pace.” “So it does have a little bit of a frothy bubbly aspect to it,” he added.

Collectors still driving market

Amid all of this, there are collectors still buying just so they can complete Pokémon sets or get cards depicting their favorite characters.

In 2023, Johannes Heck, a clinical pharmacologist, found his old Pokémon card collection from the late 90s at his grandmother’s house. Between May 2024 and 2025, he listed some on eBay and published a paper about what the experience said about the trading card market.

While Heck never spoke to his buyers about their motivation, he noticed that “uncommon” cards — one of three categories in old sets, along with “common” and “rare” — sold “remarkably fast.”

Heck told CNBC there could be two types of buyers – people looking to complete their collection and those who thought that even “uncommon” cards would rise in price enough to make money.

Mizuho’s Bellinger, who focuses on the consumer market, including collectables, said that, while Logan Paul selling card for millions adds “a new element to the hype,” collectors are playing a part in the overall market.

“There’s a lot more of these local card shows popping up … I think there is a collector base … they don’t really care about buying and flipping and making quick money,” Bellinger told CNBC.

Shares of Nintendo closed 8.4% lower in Tokyo, Japan to 7,020 yen (US$44.64), the lowest since August 2024. The stock has fallen 34% this year.

On Friday, Nintendo announced price hikes for its Switch 2 console in markets across the world. An unprecedented surge in the price of memory chips, driven by the AI infrastructure boom, has increased the cost of producing the device.

Nintendo said that it forecasts 16.5 million unit sales of the Switch 2 in the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2027, down from 19.86 million since its launch last June. The predicted fall in sales of the console — which is less than a year old — is raising concerns among investors.

“Nintendo is predicting Switch 2 hardware sales to go down this fiscal year — instead of going up as it usually is the case with new consoles,” Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, told CNBC on Monday.

“The biggest factor is of course the price hike that Nintendo thinks will lead to softer demand.”

‘Lowballing’ guidance

Nintendo has a reputation for issuing conservative guidance. Toto said the latest numbers are likely no different.

“I believe that Nintendo is, as usual, lowballing because users will get used to the new price of the console over time,” Toto said.

Kazunori Ito, director at Morningstar, said in a note on Sunday that Nintendo’s guidance was “overly conservative.”

“We believe the console price hike was inevitable given the prolonged inflation in memory costs. While the weak shipment guidance likely reflects undue caution on demand, the hike itself was kept modest, and we expect shipments to hold up better than the company anticipates,” Ito said.

The price of the Switch 2 was raised by $50 in the U.S., and by 10,000 Japanese yen (US$64) in Japan.

Ito said he expects Switch 2 sales to hit 19 million units in the current fiscal year compared to Nintendo’s forecast of 16.5 million units.

“We view Nintendo’s shares as undervalued,” Ito said. “The market appears overly focused on near-term headwinds and conservative guidance, while underappreciating the long-term earnings growth from over 100 million Switch users migrating to the new platform and increasing game purchases.”

Game sales concerns

Another metric the market watched closely was Nintendo’s software or game sales, because blockbuster titles can help drive sales of hardware.

The Japanese gaming giant said it expects software sales across the original Switch and Switch 2 to total 165 million units in the fiscal year ending March 2027. That would mark a roughly 11% year-on-year fall.

“The year-on-year decline in game shipment guidance risks signaling that Nintendo lacks confidence in its pipeline,” Morningstar’s Ito said.

“However, as user engagement typically accelerates in the second year of a console cycle, we view this as too pessimistic,” he said, adding that Morningstar forecasts software sales of 205 million units, above Nintendo’s own forecast.

Nintendo has had some early game successes with the Switch 2, including “Mario Kart World” and “Pokémon Pokopia,” which became a surprise viral hit and sold over 4 million units in the five weeks after its release in March.

However, investors are waiting to hear more on Nintendo’s gaming pipeline, and in particular on any upcoming games involving some of its most iconic characters such as Mario and Zelda. Investors are watching closely for when the company will announce a Nintendo Direct event, which is where it typically lays out its upcoming major hits.

“We should get a new Nintendo Direct presentation laying out the software 2026 lineup as soon as next month,” Toto said.

The company said on Friday it expects to sell 16.5 million units of the Switch 2 in its fiscal year ended Mar. 31, 2027. That is a decline from the 19.86 million units sold in the fiscal year just ended.

Meanwhile, the company’s forecasts for the current year were far below analyst estimates.

Nintendo said the price of the Switch 2 in the U.S. will rise by $50 from $449.99 to $499.99, from Sept. 1. In Japan, Nintendo will hike the price from 49,980 yen to 59,980 yen, effective May. 25. Nintendo also said prices for the Switch 2 will increase in Canada and Europe.

Nintendo said the rise in console prices is “In light of changes in market conditions” and after the company considered “the global business outlook.”

Switch 2 consoles use memory chips that have seen unprecedented price rises driven by the global AI data center buildout.

Nintendo shares have been under pressure since hitting a record high above 14,000 yen in August, falling nearly 50% since that peak as the memory crunch has impacted the company.

On Friday, Nintendo said its financial forecast for the year ended March 2027 reflects an approximately 100 billion yen ($637.8 million) impact due to rising component prices, particularly for memory, and “tariff measures.”

The company’s outlook was shy of analyst expectations. Nintendo now forecasts net sales for the year of 2.05 trillion yen, an 11.4% year-on-year decline and missing LSEG analyst expectations of 2.46 trillion yen. The company said it also expects a 27% decline in net profit to 310 billion yen, below analyst expectations of 418.5 billion yen.

“The clock was ticking for Nintendo for months now,” Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, told CNBC. “The impact is quite dramatic, as console sales usually go up in the second year — and not down as Nintendo predicts this time.”

The Switch 2 was released last June.

Despite the headwinds, Nintendo continues to find success with its well-known brands. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”, released this year from Universal and Illumination, has grossed nearly $900 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo.

The Switch 2 game “Pokémon Pokopia,” has turned into a surprise hit, receiving positive reviews from users and becoming one of the console’s best-selling games so far.

Nintendo has a new game in its “Splatoon” and “Starfox” franchises slated for this year. There are two major Pokémon games scheduled for release next year.

“It is now absolutely critical for Nintendo to release blockbuster first-party games as fast as possible in order to drive sales,” Toto said.

Nintendo’s reported revenue of 407.2 billion yen for the first quarter was below analyst estimates compiled by LSEG of 430.6 billion yen. But net profit came in at 65.2 billion, ahead of analyst expectations of 63.28 billion yen.

“Part of what we’re rolling out with age check, we believe, is the real, right long-term way to build this platform,” CEO David Baszucki said Friday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

In a letter to shareholders, the gaming company wrote that its new age-check feature “restricted on-platform communication for non-age checked users, diluted communication for age-checked users, and slowed new user acquisition,” causing greater-than-expected headwinds.

In January, the company restricted its chat feature to users who completed its age-check verification. According to the company, 73% of age-checked daily active users on Roblox were under 18, with 35% under 13 as of Jan. 31.

To account for the slowed growth, Roblox slashed its full-year 2026 guidance.

The company updated its full-year 2026 bookings to fall between $7.33 billion and $7.6 billion. It forecasted 2026 bookings to be almost $1 billion higher last quarter, falling between $8.28 billion and $8.55 billion.

“While our aggressive push to enhance safety lowers our expectations for topline growth in 2026, it makes our platform fundamentally better and amplifies the long-term growth potential of Roblox through more effective content targeting, tailored communication experiences, and improved community sentiment,” the company wrote in its letter to shareholders.

Roblox’s first-quarter results beat Wall Street’s estimates, with a loss of 35 cents per share beating the estimated loss of 41 cents per share. It reported $1.73 billion in revenue for the quarter, narrowly beating analysts’ estimates of $1.72 billion.

Roblox is facing over 140 lawsuits in U.S. Federal Court accusing the company of failing to protect children from sexual exploitation, according to Reuters. Last month, the company reached settlements with Alabama and West Virginia, agreeing to pay out a combined $23.2 million.

The company announced new account types for younger age groups last month, as well as expanded parental controls.

A slew of layoffs, price hikes and studio closures have led many to declare — not for the first time — that the Xbox is dead.

Laura Fryer, former executive producer at Microsoft Game Studios, said in June that the company seems to have “no desire or literally can’t ship hardware anymore.”

Former Microsoft executive and ex-Blizzard Entertainment president Mike Ybarra slammed Xbox’s “confusing” strategy in a now-deleted X post in October, saying the company is potentially heading for a “death by a thousand needles.”

The company’s overall gaming revenue decreased 2% year-over-year, with a 29% dip in Xbox hardware sales, according to Microsoft’s first-quarter earnings for fiscal 2026.

The broader console industry has been in a major slump, with hardware spending down 27% year-over-year in November, which is typically a busy shopping month, according to a recent report from research firm Circana.

It was the worst November in two decades, IGN reported, citing Circana data.

Combined Switch and Switch 2 unit sales were down more than 10% during the month and PS5 sales were down more than 40%, IGN said. But the Xbox Series hardware took the biggest beating, with a dramatic 70% drop in sales.

In console sales, Xbox can barely see the leaders this year.

Nintendo‘s Switch 2 has sold 10.36 million units since its debut in June, the company said in its latest earnings report. Sony‘s PlayStation 5 had 9.2 million units sold in 2025, according to its most recent financial results.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series S and Series X, at 1.7 million units, couldn’t outsell the original Nintendo Switch, which launched in 2017 and has sold 3.4 million units so far this year, data from game sales tracking site VGChartz estimated.

Microsoft declined to comment on Xbox sales or numbers.

The company stopped reporting console unit shipments in 2015 as the gap between Xbox and PlayStation widened.

The Series S, Series X and PS5 all originally released in 2020, with some updates being released since then.

In November, Valve made a splash with its next-generation Steam Machine, which is set to launch next year.

The reveal of its console-PC hybrid generated buzz across the gaming landscape, with The Verge declaring that “Valve just built the Xbox that Microsoft is dreaming of.”

The mini cube will be able to run Windows PC games through Valve’s own Linux-based SteamOS as a television console or as a gaming computer. Gamers will have access to Steam’s extensive library of thousands of games.

But Microsoft doesn’t seem too worried about falling behind.

“We’re not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo. There isn’t really a great solution or win for us,” Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said in a 2023 podcast.

In congratulating Valve on the release, the Xbox boss gave a nod to the movement to expand gaming access “across PC, console and handheld devices.”

As Sony and Nintendo have firmly established themselves as hardware companies, Microsoft is pushing toward Bill Gates’ original vision of an all-encompassing entertainment hub in the living room.

“Ultimately, the addressable market is anybody who wants to play games, and Microsoft wants to serve that market,” Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter told CNBC.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a recent interview with the TBPN podcast that the company’s gaming business model will look to be “everywhere in every platform,” from consoles to TV to mobile.

His comments also hinted that the next Xbox may function more like a PC.

“It’s kind of funny people think about the console and PC as two different things,” Nadella said. “We built a console because we wanted to build a better PC, which could then perform for gaming. So I kind of want to revisit some of that conventional wisdom.”

Xbox President Sarah Bond echoed the idea, saying in a recent interview with Mashable that the company’s next-generation console will have “some of the thinking” seen in the Xbox’s new handhelds, which were built by hardware manufacturer Asus in partnership with Microsoft.

Launched in October, those devices support cross-platform gaming and can run PC games bought from Epic Games, CD Projekt and Valve stores.

Xbox has already incorporated that approach into the latest Backbone Pro, which rolled out in November.

Designed in partnership with Backbone Labs, the portable gaming controller offers access to cloud gaming on mobile, PC, smart TV and other streaming devices.

So what will Microsoft’s new-gen console look like?

Little is known about where the company is at in its development.

A source familiar with Xbox strategy told CNBC that the company is looking at creating an open system that enables players to jump between console, PC and cloud gaming — and any form of entertainment beyond gaming.

Gaming in the cloud

Pachter said that while Microsoft is not completely abandoning hardware, the company is splitting its audience into existing buyers interested in specialized consoles and everyone else.

In a 2019 interview with The Verge, Spencer said that he was not concerned with focusing on console sales as much as making games accessible.

“I do think as we look at the next decade of gaming, as we think about reaching the over 2 billion people on the planet who play games, many of those people won’t be buying consoles and gaming PCs,” Spencer said.

Xbox Game Pass subscription service, which gives subscribers access to games from a variety of publishers, is a clear example of this strategy.

Microsoft has been steadily expanding its title offerings on the service.

The platform’s most basic tier, Game Pass Essential (previously Game Pass Core), which costs $9.99 and launched in 2023 with 36 games, now offers over 50 titles.

Ultimate tier members have access to over 500 titles.

The growth in cloud gaming has been blistering.

Xbox reported a record 34 million Game Pass subscribers in 2024 and a total Game Pass revenue of almost $5 billion over the last fiscal year.

Xbox said in a November blog post that the number of cloud gaming hours from Game Pass subscribers was up 45% compared to the same time last year. The Microsoft subsidiary also said console players are “spending 45% more time cloud streaming on console and 24% more on other devices.”

In announcing the benchmark, the platform added that Xbox Cloud Gaming is now in 30 countries with the expansion into India, which it called “the fastest-growing gaming market in the world,” home to more than 500 million gamers this year.

Although Microsoft faced heavy criticism from subscribers after increasing the cost of its Ultimate tier by 50% from $19.99 to $29.99 in October, the company is reportedly testing an ad-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Omdia senior principal analyst George Jijiashvili told CNBC that a free Game Pass tier would likely act as a user-acquisition tool, especially for gamers who have not invested in consoles yet.

However, due to the high costs associated with cloud gaming, an ad-supported tier would likely not be able to actually drive a meaningful amount of revenue, he said.

Cloud gaming is inherently difficult to scale since it needs to balance computing power and operating costs with user affordability.

“With console-grade cloud gaming, you need to essentially run every single instance of the game in a server,” Jijiashvili said. “You need a dedicated hardware for every single person that’s streaming the game, meaning it just doesn’t scale.”

Despite gaming’s scaling limitations, Microsoft seems committed to doing what it has done with the rest of its products — moving it to the cloud.

“They’ve evolved into a primarily cloud services company,” Pachter said. “So everything they’ve done since they started acquiring studios at Xbox has been toward the connected experience in the home to view entertainment.”

Game studio bonanza

Microsoft has spent the past few years building out its entertainment hub with a catalog of original games through an acquisition blitz.

In 2018, the software giant more than doubled its game studios with a string of acquisitions that included Ninja Theory, inXile Entertainment and Obsidian Entertainment.

Two years later, Microsoft bought ZeniMax Media, which owned Bethesda, for $8.1 billion. It was the company’s largest gaming acquisition until its 2023 purchase of Activision Blizzard for $75.4 billion.

Pachter said that the software giant’s gaming spree was also a move to collect “enough content” to bolster its cloud gaming services.

Yet Microsoft’s approach to using its roster of exclusive titles has seen a stark shift recently.

As Xbox exclusives still struggled to compete with wildly successful PlayStation games like “Marvel’s Spider-Man” and “God of War,” the company has made a definitive pivot away from its original-content strategy.

Bond recently said in an interview with Mashable that the idea of exclusive games is “antiquated” as the company has leaned into cross-platform gaming.

Microsoft announced in October that the upcoming “Halo” game will be available on Sony’s PlayStation 5, marking the first time the major franchise has become accessible on a competing console.

In 2024, Xbox opened four formerly exclusive games to other consoles.

Spencer said at the time that the move did not indicate a change in Xbox’s exclusive strategy, but the company has since continued to bring several former exclusives to rival platforms.

In a January interview, Spencer said that the company won’t “put walls up” where users can engage with Xbox games.

“What we’ve learned is put the games first, make sure the games can be as great as they can,” he said. “We love the experience on our own hardware, on our own platform, but our games will show up in more and more places.”

Cuts and price jumps

Microsoft laid off 1,900 workers, around 9% of its gaming division, in January and slashed another 650 jobs from Xbox in September.

In May, the company also shut down several studios under game publisher Bethesda, including “Redfall” maker Arkane Austin and “Mighty Doom” developer Alpha Dog Games.

The gaming unit was hit again when company-wide layoffs in July led to Microsoft shelving “Perfect Dark” and “Everwild,” games that have reportedly been in development for at least seven years, as well as multiple unannounced projects.

Some have attributed the cost-cutting measures to mounting pressure to hit lofty profit goals.

The company reportedly asked its gaming division in 2023 to target profit margins of 30%, according to Bloomberg, which cited people familiar with the matter.

The goal was a significant jump from the 12% profit margin Xbox reached in 2022, as revealed in court documents, and well above the average video-game industry standard of 17% to 22%, analysts told Bloomberg.

Microsoft told CNBC that while the company does set ambitious goals, the reported 30% profit margin target was incorrect.

Microsoft has raised prices on its aging lineup of flagship consoles twice over the past year. Nintendo and Sony also announced price hikes for their respective consoles in August.

The PS5 currently starts at $549.99, and the original Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 cost $399.99 and $499.99, respectively.

Xbox’s new ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X were priced at $599.99 and a staggering $999.99, respectively.

With a growing number of consoles and handhelds in the market, competition is fierce for a dedicated group of customers that will always be interested in owning hardware.

But Xbox is betting that cloud and cross-platform gaming are the future.

For a decade, claims have been made about the death of the Xbox, and what comes next could fully spell the end, or bring a metamorphosis.

Artificial intelligence is set to have a huge impact on the gaming industry and its billions of players, according to Min-Liang Tan, the billionaire CEO and co-founder of gaming firm Razer.

From the ways in which games are developed to hacks for completing levels, Tan said the technology’s ramifications across the sector can’t be overstated.

“For us at Razer, the way we see it is that AI is going to completely disrupt everything, or change everything in gaming,” Tan told CNBC’s “Beyond the Valley” podcast.

Gaming plays a significant role in the creative sector, with 3.6 billion players around the world and annual revenue of nearly $189 billion, according to research company Newzoo, which tracks data across mobile, console and PC games.

“Game developers will now be able to use AI tools, and then you’ve got game publishers that will now distribute, market new games with AI tools … For gamers, the AI tools will be able to change things, in terms of the way they play,” Tan told CNBC’s Arjun Kharpal at Singapore’s SWITCH conference.

Razer, known for its gaming gear like mice, headsets and keyboards, has developed Game Co-AI, a tool that uses computer vision to “watch” how a gamer plays and provides tips on solving quests or defeating enemies. The tool will also use data such as public APIs, and a beta version of Game Co-AI will be available “later in 2025,” according to Razer’s website.

The potential use of AI in esports — or competitive gaming — has sparked debate, however.

“We will not have AI running, I think, during a game itself, but what about at the point of time of training?” Tan said. There is an appetite among some esports players to use AI to help coach future stars, Tan said. “There’s a lot of excitement in respect of this. The opportunities are limitless.”

Along with helping players, AI will also be able to detect and fix bugs when games are developed, according to Tan.

Traditionally, game testing involved “a whole bunch of people sitting in a room,” playing games and identifying bugs one by one, Tan said, in a process known as quality assurance or QA. Razer is developing an AI QA Companion, which can find and log bugs — and will soon also be able to suggest bug fixes, he added.

“[QA] is about 20% to 30% of the [development] costs, it takes up about 30% of the time,” Tan said, adding that the new tool will automate the QA process, making human testers more effective and productive.

AI-created games?

The effects of AI are being felt across industries, but there is still some disagreement on how far AI can go in gaming.

Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of video game publisher Take-Two Interactive, which makes Grand Theft Auto, said on Tuesday that AI can’t rival human game developers.

When asked for his gaming predictions for a year’s time, however, Tan said: “I think we will be talking about some of the new, exciting games that have been built with AI, and how we see the future from that. Maybe we might see one or two major hit games.”

Developing a game usually involves large teams and significant investment, but AI will allow smaller groups of people to do so, according to Tan. Rather than being a threat to jobs, AI can remove “tedious” tasks, he added. “The human creativity still needs to be there.”

The way in which the gaming industry uses AI may have a wider impact beyond the sector, Tan said, suggesting that it could “spawn multiple other new industries.”

“A lot of what’s happening in the tech industry was born from gaming, and I believe that a lot of what will happen for AI will also be born from AI gaming,” he said.

Razer was founded by Tan and Robert Krakoff in 2005, and the company became known for the Boomslang, a mouse — named after a deadly snake — designed specifically for gaming. “For a gamer, the mouse is everything. It’s an extension of your arm,” Tan said. “The more precise your mouse is, the more likely you are going to be able to get frags,” he said, referring to the “kills” made in first-person shooter games.

Headquartered in Singapore and Irvine, California, Tan said the company went global “very quickly” after it launched. Razer went public in 2017, listing on the Hong Kong stock exchange, before going private again in 2022.

Close to half of Kalshi’s user base experienced glitches and delays on Saturday during college football games, a major source of trades, as some said they were temporarily unable to process orders.

In a message sent to a user obtained by CNBC, the predictions market service’s website apologized for any inconvenience and said it was “looking into” the issues traders were experiencing.

“The Exchange is experiencing temporary delays,” the message read. “Balances and positions may not be accurately reflected at this time.”

One user shared a screen recording and screenshots with CNBC that showed they were unable to see their balance or bets while the issues persisted.

A number of users on X reported the website was down when they were trying to place bets on college football games, with some saying they had open orders that wouldn’t process. When CNBC visited the website, it wouldn’t load, showing only a green K with a spinning circle around it for more than 20 minutes. The platform later loaded.

“Earlier today, Kalshi experienced minor glitches that temporarily affected some user experiences. No exchange outage occurred, no funds were affected, and the issues are now resolved,” the company said in a statement.

Earlier, a spokesperson denied there was an outage and said the exchange “never stopped functioning properly.” He added that there has been no impact on clearing, advanced trading, or institutional trading.

“There were some glitches and delays on our web and app product, which affected less than half of our user base,” the spokesperson said.

A little over a week ago, Kalshi announced a $300 million Series D funding round that valued the company at $5 billion, more than double its $2 billion valuation in June after its Series C round.

The round was co-led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Sequoia Capital, with participation from Paradigm. Additional backers included Coinbase Ventures, General Catalyst, Spark Capital and CapitalG.

The company, founded in 2018, rose to prominence by offering bettors the ability to trade on a wide range of real-world events, from football games to who President Donald Trump could pardon this year.

The fund’s gaming arm, Savvy Gaming, has taken stakes in public video gaming publishers and bought ESL, FACEIT, and Scopely, the analysts noted, but the deal for EA is “the biggest such move to date by some distance.”

Affinity CEO Jared Kushner, who is President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, touted EA’s “bold vision for the future” in a release announcing the deal.

“I’ve admired their ability to create iconic, lasting experiences, and as someone who grew up playing their games - and now enjoys them with his kids – I couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead,” Kushner said in a statement.

The group of companies is making a total $36 billion equity investment, with $20 billion in debt financing from JPMorgan, according to the release. JPMorgan was brought in a couple of weeks ago, people familiar with the deal told Faber.

The take-private deal for the maker of popular games like Battlefield, The Sims and the Madden series of NFL games, among others, is set to be the largest leveraged buyout in Wall Street history.

In a note to employees, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said he is “excited to continue as CEO.”

“Our new partners bring deep experience across sports, gaming, and entertainment,” he wrote. “They are committed with conviction to EA – they believe in our people, our leadership, and the long-term vision we are now building together.”

The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of fiscal 2027.

There is a 45-day window to allow for other proposals, people familiar with the terms of the deal told Faber. The deal talks started in the spring, the people said.

Silver Lake, which is led by co-CEOs Egon Durban and Greg Mondre, is also one of the key investors in Trump’s push to get TikTok under U.S. control.

CNBC has reached out to EA for further comment and information on the deal.

Sales of Nintendo’s Switch 2 now total 5.82 million units, the company said in an update on its investor relations website Friday.

Here’s how Nintendo did in the quarter ending on June 30 versus LSEG estimates:

Revenue: 572.3 billion Japanese yen ($3.8 billion), up 132% year-over-year and above the 474.84 billion yen expected.

Operating profit: 56.9 billion yen, versus 53.46 billion yen expected.

Sales from Nintendo’s dedicated video game platform business grew 142.5% year-on-year to 555.5 billion yen, driven primarily by a higher price point for the Switch 2, compared with that of its predecessor, according to the company.

Sales within Nintendo’s intellectual property-related business — which includes movies and entertainment based on the company’s original games — meanwhile declined 4.4% due to a decrease in revenue from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”

Despite the bumper quarterly performance, Nintendo maintained its revenue and operating profit guidance for the fiscal year ending March 2026 unchanged at 1.9 trillion yen and 320 billion yen, respectively.

Nintendo shares have rallied roughly 40% so far this year on the back of excitement about the tech giant’s new Switch 2 hybrid console.

The device, which launched on June 5, sold more than 3.5 million units in its first four days and Nintendo expects it will hit 15 million unit sales in the current fiscal year.

Nintendo on Friday kept its annual sales forecast for the Switch 2 unchanged at 15 million units. Analysts, however, say this target is conservative, and that the company will likely exceed that number.

One factor that could dent Nintendo’s financial prospects is an expected hit from U.S. tariffs. However, analysts at Morningstar believe Nintendo will weather the storm by increasing its overall gaming audience.”

“Although Nintendo’s profitability is expected to decline in the short term due to higher tariff rates, the company will recoup the losses in the long term by selling more games to a larger user base,” said Kazunori Ito, director of equity research at Morningstar.

For its part, Nintendo said Friday that, “While there have been changes in the market environment since we announced our initial forecast for the fiscal year, such as the U.S. tariff measures, at this time there is no significant impact on our earnings forecast for this fiscal year.”
