Market expert and Complete Circle Consultants’ Managing Partner and CIO, Gurmeet Chadha, has offered a refreshingly candid take on what truly shaped his journey to financial independence. It has little to do with degrees, technical skill, or superior stock-picking ability, but rather his ability to accept and digest stock market volatility.

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Chadha said that the single most important factor behind his wealth creation was what he called his “digestive ability” — the mental strength to endure market ups and downs over long periods without losing conviction.

“One reason which contributed to my financial independence journey is not my skill, knowledge or qualification. It’s the stomach to digest and accept that volatility is integral,” Chadha wrote.

The seasoned investor emphasised that wealth creation in equities is less about timing the market or chasing quick riches and more about surviving through cycles. According to him, investors who can stay invested for 15–20 years, avoid get-rich-quick schemes, and maintain faith in India’s long-term growth story are far more likely to end up wealthy.

“One reason which contributed in my financial independence journey is not my skill, knowledge or qualification. It’s the stomach to digest n accept that volatility is integral. If u survive 15–20 years, do not chase quick rich schemes & believe in India, u will be very wealthy,” Chadha said in a post on X.

If u survive 15-20 years, do not chase quick rich schemes & believe in India , u will be very wealthy.

— Gurmeet Chadha (@connectgurmeet) December 23, 2025

Chadha’s comments were made on Tuesday.</cdata>

As the year comes to a close, volatility has come down considerably. The fear index, India VIX, is down 36% on an annual basis. It was at its highest point in April and was up 43%, according to Trendlyne. The year also started amid strong volatility, with India VIX jumping 12%. It was again up nearly 10% in October. On Wednesday, India VIX closed at 9.19, down 2%. Its 52-week high stood at 23.19.

Chadha regularly shares his insights on investments and stock markets.

Recently, he welcomed the decision by Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank, to invest in Indian stocks via a mutual fund. The fund will be benchmarked to the Nifty 50. The move now paves the way for Russian investors to invest in Indian stock markets, he said.

“Russia’s largest bank SBER offering Nifty 50 index to local Russians is BIG. Russia has significant rupee surplus,” Chadha said.

Counting the advantages of the move, Chadha said that the NSE can use this as a template to tie up with other BRICS nations, along with smaller nations in Africa, South America, Asia, and even Australia and New Zealand.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized that he regards the media not as outsiders but as an integral part of the effort to build a better state and improve the lives of all citizens.

He made these remarks during a meeting held today (05) with the heads of electronic media organizations at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, the President’s Media Division (PMD) reported.

The President highlighted that the people expect a good political culture and elected the current government to fulfill that expectation. He invited all media organizations to collaborate in fostering the new political, social, and economic changes that the people desire.

Additionally, President Dissanayake urged media heads to refrain from reporting false information that could harm national harmony. While affirming that the media has the right to question or criticize the government on political and economic matters, he stressed the importance of responsible reporting.

Recalling the country’s history of enduring decades of war, the President declared that racism would never be permitted again. He also assured that he would not compromise or restrict media freedom in any way, the statement said.

During the meeting, the President elaborated on the government’s stance on several critical issues under public discussion. He outlined programs such as the initiative to eradicate poverty, a pressing issue, and the Clean Sri Lanka program.

The event was attended by members of the Sri Lanka Broadcasters’ Guild, along with senior officials, including heads of electronic media institutions, group directors, chief executive officers, and general managers.

The Jim Caviezel-led thriller snared more than $180 million at the domestic box office during its run, outpacing big studio films such as “The Flash,” on a budget of just $14.5 million. It also made nearly $250 million worldwide.

The film will stream on Prime Video in the U.S. starting Dec. 26. Neither company commented on the financial details of the streaming deal.

“Sound of Freedom,” which tells the story of a real-life government agent who quit his job to rescue a young girl from sex traffickers in Colombia, captured audience attention, luring back moviegoers week after week after its $14.2 million opening over the July 4 holiday weekend.

Part of “Sound of Freedom’s” box-office success was due to a campaign from filmmakers to urge moviegoers to buy tickets that can be claimed online for future screenings by those who may not be able to afford them. Angel Studios calls the model “pay it forward.”

That’s not the only unique thing the studio did for the film. Angel Studios actually used its crowdfunding model to raise $5 million to distribute the film after 20th Century Fox, which previously held the rights to it, was bought by the Walt Disney Co. and shelved its release. “Sound of Freedom” wrapped filming in 2018.

The anti-sex trafficking thriller has struck a chord with older audiences, many of whom have not been back to theaters since before the Covid-19 pandemic. It has also become popular in conservative political circles. Former President Donald Trump hosted a private screening of the film at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club over the summer.

Angel Studios, which has become known for its faith-based content, has a wide variety of projects on the docket going forward. The studio is set to release a sci-fi thriller called “The Shift” in December and a biographical drama called “Cabrini” in March.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated how many “pay it forward” tickets Angel Studios sold for “Sound of Freedom.”

The duo — a former financial advisor and a teacher, respectively — launched the podcast “Earn Your Leisure” nearly five years ago with a mission to promote literacy around money and entrepreneurship.

About 1 in 7 people lost more than $10,000 in 2022 due to a lack of financial literacy, according to a study by the National Financial Educators Council.

“I realized there were certain things that weren’t taught inside schools — financial literacy and financial education being one of them,” Millings said of the idea to create Earn Your Leisure.

More from Personal Finance:
As mortgage rates hit 8%, home ‘affordability is incredibly difficult,’ economist says
Student loan borrowers reenter ‘a very messy system’
The 10-year Treasury tops key 5% level: Here’s what that means for you

Today, Earn Your Leisure has expanded to create multiple podcasts, host live events and offer an online educational platform, EYL University. It has 1.4 million Instagram followers and another 1.4 million YouTube subscribers. Its flagship podcast has an average 3 million downloads a month, said Bilal and Millings. It’s also developing a financial literacy curriculum for high schools.

CNBC interviewed the duo — who have been friends since childhood — to talk about personal finance and financial literacy in the U.S.

‘Investing is not just for rich and wealthy people’

Greg Iacurci: You told CNBC last year that your “purpose is financial literacy and empowerment.” When it comes to financial literacy, what’s the No. 1 mistake you see people making with their finances?

Rashad Bilal: Not understanding the importance of investing, or [not] knowing how compound interest works.

For a long period of time, investing was something that people looked at more as a luxury, not a necessity, [thinking] if you’re able to invest then you’re in the top 1%, or you have to be wealthy to even consider that.

Investing is not just for rich and wealthy people. It’s for everybody. You can start with smaller balances and dollar-cost average.

Troy Millings: The relationship with money: People don’t understand what to do with it or how to save it. These are simple concepts we’re not taught. When we don’t know what to do, we do what we know, and that’s often spending outside our means. Mistakes are made because nobody is educated.

People may have heard that investing and compound interest are important but might not know why. Can you speak to that?

Bilal: The only way to really achieve financial freedom is if your money is growing without you working for the money. How to achieve that is through investing. One dollar will only be $1 if it’s saved in the bank. But $1 can become $2 if it’s invested.

Most people understand this without even fully realizing that they understand it because they have a retirement plan. The whole point of a retirement plan is investing. You put money into a 401(k), and that money gets invested with the expectation that when you’re 65, 70 years old you’ll have a nest egg you can draw from and live off of in retirement.

The only pathway to not working forever, to having money in abundance, is to find ways to make more money with the money you currently have.

You mentioned financial freedom. How much money does someone need to be financially free?

Bilal: I think everybody is different. I think it depends on where you live. But I would say, I think you have to be in the eight-figure-net-worth range if you live in suburban or metropolitan areas. I would say around that $10 million figure would provide some level of comfort if other aspects of your life are maintained.

And what is financial freedom?

Millings: I think it’s having enough financial resources to pay for your lifestyle, your living expenses, and also allows you money to invest.

It could differ. It could be in that eight-figure range. Or it could be seven figures. It’s really about having the financial resources to do what you want and invest and create generational wealth. It needs to be something that lasts for generations.

Some people might hear that — seven or eight figures — and think, “How is that possible for me?” Do you think it’s possible for most people?

Bilal: Most people probably aren’t going to make $10 million — I’m just being honest to the question you asked. We have to be honest.

But some people will. This is why we’re big on entrepreneurship, we’re big on investing. You might not be able to accumulate $10 million in your lifetime, but you might be able to accumulate $1 million or $1.5 million. That’s still better than being 70 years old with $20,000 in your bank account.

I think the aspiration towards a certain goal, you might not be able to actually obtain that goal, but if you fall short you’ll still probably be better [off] than you would have been if you had no aspiration and didn’t follow any rules or didn’t try to invest or start a business; you live off what you have. You won’t buy a $1 million home if you only have $1,000 in your bank account. Your life will still be better financially than if you didn’t follow the pathway towards the goal.

For the person who’s just starting out investing, how would you suggest they go about it?

Millings: When you’re young, you want to be as aggressive as possible, and when you’re older, you want to get more conservative. Risk mitigation is a huge part of that. We always tell people to start with indexes — an entire index or entire [industry] sector in an exchange-traded fund. That keeps you from having the volatility of watching a stock either appreciate — where you might get some upside — or depreciate, where the risk on the downside is far greater.

In a recent discussion with entrepreneur and musician Sean “Diddy” Combs, you mentioned that when he met you, he said you “make it cool to be educated.” How do you go about that?

Millings: We’re authentically ourselves, so there’s a natural relatability because people see themselves in us. When people talk about finance they try to make it a language that is upspoken to the masses. Our mission was to democratize it, to make it seem like something that can be very relatable and digestible. We show up the way we are, we wear sweatshirts, we wear hoodies. We represent everybody. It doesn’t feel like it’s only for the elite or it’s only for a select crowd.

It’s the same thing in the classroom: A student has to realize this is someone I can learn from and who I want to teach me. Our audience kind of feels that way when they look at us. We’re also very vocal that we’re learning as well. We don’t know everything, and we bring people on [the show] who can educate us.

‘Having money doesn’t alleviate the problems’

For your podcasts, you’ve interviewed several famous and wealthy people — pro athletes, musicians and entertainers, for example. Are there certain things about finance that seem just as confusing for the rich and famous as for the average person?

Bilal: Yeah, I think a lot of people don’t have a full understanding of finance. It doesn’t matter how much money you make. That’s a common misconception.

Having money doesn’t alleviate the problems, it just makes the problems even worse. Understanding money or having a good understanding of money isn’t something that’s correlated with how much money you have.

Financial literacy is something I think gets metastasized on the highest level. Those are the same issues that everybody else has, it’s just everybody else doesn’t have the opportunity to lose $30 million or invest $20 million into a bad investment and then it goes belly up. If given the opportunity they probably would, it’s just they don’t have it. It’s a bigger microscope on celebrities because they’re public figures.

Is that because wealthy people and celebrities have a capacity to overspend more than the average person?

Bilal: I think it’s not so much just a spending situation. That’s a common misconception also, that they go broke because they spend money lavishly. That’s one part of it. But another major part is they’re actually trying to do the right thing, they’re just misinformed.

You see a lot of people make bad decisions when it comes to investing. They’ll invest in things that might be Ponzi schemes, bad real estate deals, they’ll be led down a bad path when it comes to financial advisors or people they trust. They think they’re doing something productive with their money but they actually are losing money because the investments aren’t fully vetted, they don’t fully understand what they’re investing in.

So I think it’s a little more complicated than just spending habits. It all comes back to not having a basic level of understanding and education when it comes to money.

It seems there’s some relatability there for everyday people.

Bilal: For sure. Look at crypto, for example. If you look at [the cryptocurrency] dogecoin, a lot of people made misinformed decisions. They thought they were doing something productive. They didn’t go into it with the intention of losing money. In their brain it was like, ‘This is an opportunity to turn $5,000 into $20,000.’ And they potentially lost all of their money.

It’s the same thing [with celebrities]. It’s just played out on bigger levels.

The SEC’s Boston regional office has been probing Freedom for months, according to documents seen by CNBC and people familiar with the matter. The company, headquartered in Almaty, Kazakhstan, has a $5 billion market cap and is controlled and majority-owned by 35-year-old billionaire CEO Timur Turlov, a former Russian citizen.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts is also making preliminary inquiries into Freedom, documents seen by CNBC show. Such inquiries often occur after a civil probe unearths evidence of possible crimes.

Freedom shares fell as much as 9.3% Friday morning after CNBC’s report but closed up 1.52%. Nearly 364,000 Freedom shares changed hands by the closing of trading Friday, 4.5 times the stock’s 10-day average.

The overlapping SEC and DOJ probes are scrutinizing the firm’s internal controls and offshore operations, as well as Turlov’s claims that Freedom can get its largely Russian client base access to hot U.S. IPOs, according to the documents and sources.

Turlov and Freedom are aware of the SEC probe, which has been going on for months, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC. The Justice Department’s involvement with these issues is more recent, documents show. Probes of this kind can take years and may not lead to criminal or civil charges. So far, there have been no formal charges or allegations of wrongdoing.

Turlov didn’t respond to CNBC’s interview request, but in an interview that was published by a Kazakh outlet Thursday, he acknowledged that “almost all global regulators came to us this summer.”

Freedom declined to comment.

An SEC spokesperson told CNBC that it doesn’t comment on the existence or nonexistence of an investigation.

A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment.

The SEC has been aware of potential securities violations at Freedom since at least 2022. Some of the issues that caught investigators’ attention — including allegations related to sanctions violations, IPO access and stock trading — were also raised in an August report from short seller Hindenburg Research, which claimed that Freedom “still does business in the Russian market, and that the company has openly flouted sanctions along with anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) rules.”

The SEC intensified its scrutiny after the Hindenburg report and an analysis published in April by short seller Citron Research, sources familiar with the matter told CNBC.

Freedom’s website describes the company as a provider of investment banking and brokerage services to Central Asia and Eastern Europe. Its website lists two addresses in the U.S., one in New York and the other at a Las Vegas co-working and virtual office space.

The company leases a 15,250-square-foot office in the Trump Building in New York’s Financial District, according to filings. The two floors house Freedom’s existing U.S. operations, including a brokerage firm registered with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. Freedom says in filings it has nearly 3,700 employees and 370,000 brokerage customers.

Turlov founded Freedom in 2010, and by 2013 he had expanded the business from Moscow to the EU. The company said it divested its Russian business in February, almost a year after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine. Turlov, a former citizen of Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean as well as Russia, owns 71% of Freedom shares, worth roughly $3.6 billion.

Turlov has been a citizen of Kazakhstan since 2022. He was required to renounce both his Saint Kitts and his Russian citizenship, as Kazakhstan doesn’t recognize dual citizenship.

‘Signs of illegal activity’

The Hindenburg report, in part, alleged that Freedom helped sanctioned individuals gain access to the U.S. financial system through a Belizean holding company, also owned by Turlov, that helped funnel and obfuscate transactions. In SEC filings, Freedom acknowledged it does business with sanctioned individuals through the Belize affiliate, but denies those individuals have access to U.S., U.K. or EU financial systems through Freedom.

The Belizean entity, incorporated in 2014, is now named Freedom Securities Trading Belize, or FST Belize.

“FST Belize, we have the same sanctions compliance as in the entire holding,” Turlov said in an August interview with a publication in Kazakhstan. “There is no reason for sanctions, if there is no involvement of U.S. representatives in the operation.”

FST Belize holds Kazakh licenses that let it operate a securities trading platform and process international payments and money transfers, according to the company. In 2021, the Kazakh government added the subsidiary to a list of companies “with signs of illegal activity.”

In response, Freedom said it “fully complies” with local laws and regulations wherever it operates.

Another point of inquiry by U.S. authorities is the trading activity of Freedom stock, which was uplisted to the Nasdaq in 2019 under the ticker FRHC after previously trading over the counter.

Historically, negative reports from established short sellers will hurt a company’s stock. Freedom shares dipped about 8% the two trading days that followed Hindenburg’s report. They quickly rebounded, including a 25% jump on Aug. 18, with no apparent explanation.

Hindenburg alleged that Freedom and Turlov protected the company’s stock from wild swings by ensuring that clients held the shares in their brokerage accounts, reducing the risk of volatility.

At least five law firms have said they’re investigating claims on behalf of investors for potential violations of securities law since the Hindenburg report.

Citron compared Freedom to Sam Bankman-Fried’s failed and allegedly fraudulent trading firm, Alameda Research. The investment firm said Turlov’s ties to Russia and its continued brokerage operations in the country made the company a prime candidate for an SEC investigation.

Freedom has faced prior regulatory challenges.

In July, the company’s European subsidiary paid a 50,000 euro fine to the Cypriot securities regulator over failures in its money laundering and anti-terrorist financing controls.

And last year, Freedom’s former U.S. auditor, WSRP, was replaced by Deloitte Kazakhstan, after the U.S. audit regulator found that three of Freedom’s auditors at WSRP failed to follow proper standards of review. Freedom’s auditors were sanctioned and barred for what the regulator said was a failure to assess the true nature of the company’s relationship with its Belize entity.

Those auditors are eligible to reapply for reinstatement. But WSRP stepped down as Freedom’s auditor. Deloitte Kazakhstan helped Freedom restate the prior auditor’s erroneous filings to the SEC and regain compliance with exchange rules, filings show.

Deloitte’s Kazakh office is just a few blocks away from Freedom’s headquarters, on the outskirts of Kazakhstan’s largest city and financial hub. Freedom is the only SEC-registered U.S. company that Deloitte Kazakhstan audits, according to Public Company Accounting Oversight Board records.

“First thing to consider is that the company has been audited by the largest big-4 auditor, Deloitte,” Turlov said, in his response to Hindenburg’s report.

Deloitte and Roman Sattarov, the Deloitte partner overseeing Freedom’s audit, didn’t respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

Freedom is still trying to expand in the U.S. In February, the company agreed to pay $400 million, primarily in stock, for middle-market investment bank Maxim Group. Maxim has worked on IPOs for many smaller companies and has been part of bigger deals, such as PIMCO Access Income Fund’s $866 million offering in 2022.

Turlov isn’t letting the U.S. probes keep him away. He traveled to New York last month.

“This week talking to our US office, partners and regulators,” he wrote in a Sept. 25 post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

A spokesperson for Turlov said he was “definitely not meeting with regulators.”

In Turlov’s interview published Thursday in Kazakhstan, he didn’t say which U.S. regulators approached the company, but said it all stemmed from Hindenburg’s report, which he called “misinformation.”

As we come together to celebrate Independence Day and the freedom our nation’s forefathers fought for, let’s also reflect on a different kind of freedom that matters in today’s world. Amidst the festivities and ‘Freedom Sales’ that have become a part of our celebrations, it’s a good time to think about our own financial freedom.

While we commemorate our 76th Independence Day, let’s ask ourselves if our wallets are as free as our country. In a world where purchases and expenses often hold us back, especially during these sales, there’s another kind of freedom we should consider – the freedom to be financially secure.

Unfavourably, for countless individuals, the burden of debt casts a shadow over their ability to lead a life on their own terms. The pursuit of financial independence necessitates understanding the intricacies of the debt cycle.

With the compelling advertisements touting enticing loan options and claims of “lowest interest rates,” it’s easy to succumb to the charm they cast. However, it’s crucial to recognize that lower interest rates don’t necessarily translate into reduced tax burdens.

Let’s get to the bottom of this concept through a real-life example.

The ongoing financial debate that has sparked countless discussions across the internet revolves around the age-old question of whether to ‘own’ or ‘rent’ a house. Recently, the research team at FundsIndia provided a comprehensive overview of this debate, effectively settling the matter.

Among the insightful findings of this study, what particularly captured my interest was the concept of the loan repayment cycle they highlighted.Imagine opting for a loan of Rs. 50,00,000, spread across 20 years at the lowest interest rate of 8.5% per annum. This choice would entail a monthly EMI of Rs. 43,391. Which in terms of the current economy is a huge commitment to an average salaried individual.

Remarkably, after five years of dutiful payments, you’d have contributed Rs. 26 lakhs, a whopping 50% of the principal amount. However, it might be astounding to learn that, by the end of the same five years, merely 12% of the principal amount would have been repaid.

This fact underscores that a substantial portion of your EMI primarily caters to interest repayment, highlighting the significant interest burden.

Zooming out to the entire 20-year loan tenure with the 8.5% interest rate, the aggregate amount paid sums up to Rs. 1.04 Crores. This figure encapsulates both the principal sum and the accumulated interest over the loan’s tenure.

This intricacy of EMI payments and loans is one we can’t ignore. While EMIs and loans hold a prominent place in our financial lives, understanding their nuances, equips us to make informed decisions.

But how do we break free from the relentless cycle of debt?

Financial independence is the gateway to living life on our terms, unshackled by creditors. It empowers us to pursue dreams, embrace calculated risks, and seize opportunities without the weight of debt obligations. By acknowledging the repercussions of debt, we elevate the significance of striving for financial freedom.

Let’s quit the editorial answer and pen down the definitive steps involved.

Step 1: Assess Your Debt
Understanding reality is the first step to conquering it. Compile a comprehensive list of debts, noting interest rates, due dates, and monthly payments. This clarity is the foundation of your journey toward financial liberation.

Step 2: Craft a Budget
A meticulously crafted budget guides your journey to financial freedom. Distinguish between essential and discretionary expenses, embrace financial discipline, and allocate funds strategically. This budget is your compass for informed financial choices.

Step 3: Tackle High-Interest Debts First
‘Prioritize wisely’ – Debt forever has been a game of numbers, and focusing on the right ones actually saves you. High-interest debts, like credit card balances, accumulate compound interest rapidly. Channel resources toward eliminating these debts, saving money in the long haul.

Step 4: Invest in Financial Literacy
Resources are everywhere and all you need is a quick search to gain what’s most needed. Empower yourself with financial knowledge to navigate personal finance complexities, sidestep debt traps, and build a secure future. A commitment to continuous learning and acquiring insights into concepts like compound interest, investment options, and risk management is pivotal.

Conclusion
To conclude – as we celebrate this Independence Day, remember that genuine independence transcends political boundaries. It encompasses financial autonomy – the ability to shape our destinies, unburdened by debt. By embracing the ‘Pledge for Financial Freedom,’ let’s initiate a journey towards a prosperous tomorrow. This Independence Day is an opportunity to break the chains of debt and embrace the liberating realm of financial independence.

Trump hosted an event featuring a screening of the movie, “Sound of Freedom,” at his private club in New Jersey, the most striking sign yet of how the unlikely box-office hit has captured the imagination of American conservatives.

The movie, released July 4, was the second most-watched film in North America last weekend, behind “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning,” and has made $90.7 million as of Monday, according to data from Comscore.

Based on real-life events, the movie stars Jim Caviezel as Tim Ballard, a former federal agent who sought to rescue South American children from sex traffickers. Its themes have resonated with a wide range of conservatives, including mainstream Republicans who have focused heavily on education and other children’s issues, evangelicals who have responded to the movie’s religious overtones, and far-right QAnon believers who have for years spread alarmist fears of child endangerment.

The plot never directly invokes QAnon, the wide-ranging, pro-Trump conspiracy theory that falsely accuses leading Democrats of orchestrating a pedophilia ring, but the movement’s supporters have embraced the film.

And Mr. Caviezel himself has promoted baseless QAnon theories. Appearing on Stephen Bannon’s podcast before the movie’s release, he commented that “there is a big storm coming,” a QAnon slogan. In 2021, he spoke at a QAnon convention, where he repeated false claims about adrenochrome, a chemical that some QAnon believers claim is harvested from children.

The movie’s endorsement from presidential candidates echoes grass-roots energy around what Sarah Longwell, a Republican strategist, called the “mainstreaming of the center of the QAnon movement, which is that this is about protecting children.”

In focus groups of Republican voters, Ms. Longwell said, voters have brought up QAnon less explicitly than in the past and instead more frequently express concerns about schools “indoctrinating children” and transgender athletes competing in sports.

A spokesman for Angel Studios, the company that produced the film, did not respond to a request for comment.

Efforts to reach Mr. Caviezel were unsuccessful, but on Wednesday, he responded to critical coverage of the movie. Appearing on “The Benny Show,” a conservative podcast, he repeated a quotation from the movie that refers to a Bible verse: “Better a millstone be hung around their necks that they be cast into the sea that they should ever hurt one of these little ones,” he said.

Both Mr. Caviezel and Mr. Ballard attended the screening on Wednesday at Mr. Trump’s club.

Experts on misinformation expressed misgivings about the movie’s message.

“I do think that human trafficking is real and child trafficking is real and these are real problems,” said Kathryn Olmsted, a professor of history at the University of California, Davis, who has studied the role of conspiracy theories in American politics. “It’s just that this renewed, highly politicized focus on it is emblematic of increasing political polarization in our society.”

The man at the center of “Sound of Freedom,” Mr. Ballard, is a former Department of Homeland Security agent who founded an anti-trafficking group and was appointed by Mr. Trump to a federal advisory panel on human trafficking. He has been accused of exaggerating his exploits.

The movie depicts Mr. Ballard setting out to rescue two siblings who were sold by sex traffickers; he ultimately saves dozens of children.

“God’s children are not for sale,” Mr. Caviezel says in the movie, when asked by another character why he sought to do this work.

Daniela Peterka-Benton, the academic director for the Global Center of Human Trafficking at Montclair State University, said the movie’s focus on saviors rather than victims resulted in an incomplete, glamorized depiction of human trafficking. Most children, she said, are not “snatched away” but are trafficked by people they know.

“It does a disservice to the victims; it does a disservice to people really fighting to end human trafficking and to provide services to survivors,” she said. “I mean, there’s so much more to it than just the rescue.”

Nevertheless, politicians, commentators and Hollywood celebrities have praised the film.

Ivanka Trump, Mr. Trump’s daughter, who has largely stayed out of politics since the 2020 election, promoted the film in June, writing on Twitter that it “sheds light on the harrowing reality” of human trafficking, “awakening our collective conscience and inspiring us to take action for those trapped in its dark web.”

Republicans — many of whom were far less worried about the Trump administration’s separation of migrant children from their parents — have also seized on the issue.

Last week, Senate Republicans’ official Twitter account shared a video that pointed to New York Times reporting about migrant children forced to work dangerous jobs across the United States. The post misleadingly accused President Biden of having “created the largest child trafficking ring in U.S. history.”

In liberal Manhattan, “Sound of Freedom” viewers at several theaters said they had come not for the politics, but because they wanted to see a good thriller based on what they believed to be a true story.

“I came because I believe that there’s child trafficking going on and there’s just not enough light being shed on it,” said Malaika Villamizar, 19, who lives in Manhattan.

She was surprised to hear, however, that the movie had been promoted by Mr. Trump and other Republican politicians. She said she had heard about the film on TikTok.
