As investors worry about all of the companies that AI will wipe out, they are rotating into the ones that AI will have a harder time disrupting. And the HALO trade, as it is called, is working.

HALO, which stands for “heavy assets, low obsolescence,” was coined by Josh Brown, co-founder and CEO of Ritholtz Wealth Management, in February, premised on the idea that an era of rapid AI disruption requires a search by investors for companies that are immune to it. In Brown’s view, it is one of the most important investment trends of the year.

Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have both incorporated HALO into their investment research in 2026 as HALO stocks are doing well across the board. Some of the stocks cited by Brown are examples: FedEx and ExxonMobil are both up close to 30% since the beginning of the year, while Coca-Cola is up close to 17%.

HALO companies share two traits, according to Dave Mazza, CEO of Roundhill Investments, whose firm launched an ET based on the HALO theme last week. These stocks require meaningful hard physical assets in order to generate revenue, and they are durable. While AI may change how work gets done at low obsolescence companies, it does not eliminate the need for work at them, according an article he wrote on the topic. For example, electricity has to flow and goods have to get produced.

The Roundhill Halo ETF (LOHA) launched on Thursday. The fund tracks an index that screens the largest listed U.S. companies for businesses whose value is focused in physical assets and infrastructure AI can not replace, from sectors including industrials to transportation and mining.

“There’s nothing you could type into an LLM, that’s going to change what they do, at least not in a negative way. They’re probably all beneficiaries of AI,” said Brown on CNBC’s “Halftime Report” on Thursday to discuss the new ETF.

He joined Roundhill on a limited advisory basis after learning the firm was building the product. “I spoke to these guys shortly after they filed. And I said we could do a deal together, or maybe a lawsuit. I don’t know, what do you want to do?” Brown said. He added that he has known the firm’s founders for many years.

Some of the top holdings in the LOHA ETF include Cummins, AutoZone, TFI International, CSX, JB Hunt, and Lennox. “Some of them are 100-years-old,” Brown said, adding that represents a notable flip side to the increasingly visible part of the market where names like Adobe, ServiceNow, and Salesforce have drifted to 52-week lows while investors reassess software companies’ exposure to AI disruption.

Roundhill recently had a huge hit with the launch of its Memory ETF (DRAM) on April 2, which according to VettaFi, hit $9.8 billion in assets in 43 days, the fastest-ever for an ETF. The fund is up 85% since its launch, but Mazza pushed back against the idea that the launch of an ETF was in some way the sign of a top in a thematic trade. “I think it’s a little bit easy just to say that because you’re launching an ETF, it means a trade’s over,” Mazza said on “Halftime Report.”

“In fact, I think it’s actually unlocking the potential for investors to access stocks that they haven’t had before,” he said.

Brown said Roundhill’s new ETF based on the HALO theme isn’t a bet against AI, but a way to stay invested in a world that is being changed by it. “Let’s not be invested in the most disruptible companies. Let’s look for the companies that are AI resistant,” he said.

U.S. beer sales have dropped more sharply than expected, as new scanner data points to weakness in the category.

The slowdown is raising concerns on Wall Street that higher gasoline prices may be pressuring discretionary spending, especially in convenience retail.

Beer, full malt beverages, or FMB, and cider volumes fell 6.3% year over year through the week ending May 2, both on a two- and four-week trailing basis, according to Nielsen-tracked data. That’s worse than the trends seen between November and mid-April, when category declines were just 3%.

While some volatility in beer sales was expected due to Easter being earlier this year than last year, according to analyst firm Bernstein, the breadth of the slowdown could indicate broader pressure on the U.S. consumer.

The weakness is becoming most apparent in the convenience channel — chains like 7-Eleven, Wawa, Shell and Exxon — where volumes are down roughly 9% year over year for the two weeks since April 26.

Analysts said convenience stores are highly sensitive to gas station traffic and impulse purchases tied to commuting and travel — both of which appear to be under pressure as U.S. average gas prices sit at about $4.51 a gallon, according to AAA.

“We find a negative correlation between the absolute price of gas in a given state today and the sequential change in beer/FMB/volume growth,” said Bernstein analyst Nadine Sarwat.

The relationship is becoming more visible in the data, particularly in markets with higher-cost fuel.

High gas price states

Average U.S. gasoline prices have risen about 52% since the start of the Iran war, according to AAA data.

Since then, data suggests, beer volume is sliding in the states with the highest gas prices, with California standing out as the weakest market. The state saw a 16% deceleration in volume between the four weeks trailing May 2 and the four weeks trailing April 4, with the most expensive fuel market in the country at about $6.16 per gallon. Arizona and Texas have also seen notable slowdowns, with volumes falling 10% and nearly 7%, respectively, over the same time, with gas prices averaging $4.82 and $4 a gallon, respectively.

The weakness also appears to be spreading beyond beer, according to Bernstein.

“The incremental weakness in beer/FMB/cider appears to be materializing in other beverage categories too,” Sarwat said. “Perhaps pointing to intensifying cyclical pressures on the US consumer.”

The beer spending trends come after data showed U.S. consumer sentiment hit a fresh record low in May. One-third of respondents to the closely watched University of Michigan survey cited gas prices as their biggest concern.

Even as beer spending falls broadly, volume trends have been more of a mixed bag for specific brewers.

Vimana Private Jets CEO Ameerh Naran said the firm recently booked a $520,000 flight from Dubai to London on a Boeing business jet for a client. That same trip cost the client $400,000 in 2023. The difference was entirely due to jet fuel prices — which now average about $4.65 a gallon globally — Naran said.

It’s yet another ripple in the recent disruptions to air travel.

More customers turned to private air travel during the pandemic to avoid crowds. The option remains popular and has become more important to the aviation sector as wealthier households prop up spending in travel and other sectors.

These deep-pocketed travelers are less likely to get priced out as airfares rise, but they have to navigate unexpected fees as brokers and charters differ on how they pass along fuel costs. Jet fuel prices in major U.S. cities were up more than 80% last month, according to Airlines for America, an industry group, citing Argus data.

Jet charter brokers like Vimana arrange flights with jet operators, which own the planes and buy fuel, on behalf of passengers. Naran said Vimana does not renegotiate contracts and does not reprice flights, but that charter prices have surged quickly.

He advised travelers to book sooner than later, saying any price hikes are likely to be sticky even if the Iran war ends soon.

Larger jet operators are slower to pass along fuel costs to passengers as they buy fuel in bulk and want to avoid alienating customers, according to Naran. However, operators will likely have to pay more at the pump when they replenish their supplies, and some are taking losses by not repricing flights, he said.

“There’s a long-term effect, because a lot of companies now will be making losses,” he said. “They’re not going to renegotiate the contract because they don’t want to spoil the relationship with the client, but if they’re making a loss today, they’ve got to recoup it.”

Jet charter prices have increased by 5% to 15% on average, with some rising by as much as 20%, since the Iran conflict began, according to charter broker Amalfi Jets’ database.

Passing costs to passengers

While some operators have raised prices on flights booked months ago and scheduled to fly in the coming weeks, Amalfi Jets CEO Kolin Jones said his company is eating the surcharges for jet card customers.

Some operators are also passing along increased war risk premiums for flights in the Gulf, though Amalfi Jets has only encountered this with three flights so far, he said. The charges added about $8,000 to $10,000 per trip, Jones said.

Gregg Brunson-Pitts of charter broker Advanced Aviation Team said that while he believes operators should honor prices for previously booked flights, repricing is a risk.

In some cases, the fees are relatively insignificant, he said, like a $1,500 surcharge for a flight from Palm Beach, Florida, to Phoenix, Arizona, on a Bombardier Challenger 300, for example. On the other hand, a round trip on a Gulfstream from the East Coast to Asia could incur $20,000 in surcharges for every dollar increase in fuel prices per gallon, he said.

Some long-haul trips have all-inclusive fuel pricing, Brunson-Pitts added.

Nearly all charter contracts include a fuel variable expense, allowing providers to charge more even if the flight was booked six months ago, according to Amanda Applegate, a partner at Soar Aviation Law.

Fractional jet owners, who share overhead costs in exchange for a set number of flight hours, typically pay an hourly rate on fuel that’s adjusted on a monthly or weekly basis. Even they may be on the hook for surcharges when fuel prices spike, Applegate said.

Private jet travelers are less price-sensitive than most flyers, and brokers told CNBC that they haven’t seen surcharges deter demand. Customers who only fly private once or twice a year for special occasions are most likely to get sticker shock, they said.

“Realistically, the individuals that are flying private, the need and want and reason of flying private does outweigh cost,” Jones said. “If you’re going to spend $25,000 on a private jet, and let’s say the cost is now $30,000, that doesn’t necessarily price people out.”

Brokers are also working to mitigate costs by refueling in countries where fuel is cheaper, even if it means additional flight time, Jones said.

Demand for private flying

So far, the business jet market is holding steady, with flights up 5% year over year in the week through March 22, according to aviation data and consultancy firm WingX.

Flexjet global CEO Andrew Collins said jet utilization by the company’s fractional aircraft owners is up 15% over last year. Clients are generally invoiced after they fly, and the company resets fuel prices toward the end of the month, taking an average of the month, he said.

Even as oil prices surge, travelers looking to avoid long lines at airports may be propping up demand for private charters.

Recent government shutdowns — a major disruption last fall and now a partial, ongoing shutdown — have left key aviation workers without pay and slowed air travel.

Most recently, that has led to hourslong lines at major U.S. airports like those serving Houston and New York as Transportation Security Administration officers called out of work while they weren’t receiving regular pay.

In the five weeks after the partial government shutdown began on Feb. 14, business jet departures increased year over year at most metropolitan airports, WingX reported.

Flexjet’s Collins said the company saw an increase in what he called “pop-up flights,” or reservations that guaranteed an aircraft within 10 hours of departure, during the recent airport chaos.

That said, Amalfi’s Jones said he has noticed some clients opting to fly on smaller aircraft to spend less.

“Some of them are very upset about that, like, ‘Hey, I used to fly on Citation Xs. Pricing is so expensive, and now I’m flying on a Hawker 800,'” Jones said. “It’s like, well, you’re still flying private. You’re going to get there maybe three minutes slower than the bigger airplane. But all in all, it’s the same kind of level of experience.”

Brunson-Pitts encouraged flyers to confirm with their broker whether they can expect a fuel surcharge or an invoice after their trip. Still, he said he expects the situation to be temporary, comparing it to oil’s rapid surge and subsequent crash from 2007 through 2008.

“This too shall pass,” he said. “That doesn’t mean it’s not painful, but the price of jet fuel rises and then it falls again.”

S&P 500 futures and oil futures flashed an unusual burst of activity early Monday minutes before a market-moving social media post from President Donald Trump.

At around 6:50 a.m. in New York, S&P 500 e-Mini futures trading on the CME recorded a sharp and isolated jump in volume, breaking from an otherwise subdued premarket backdrop. With thin liquidity typical of early trading hours, the sudden burst stood out as one of the largest volume moments of the session up to that point.

The timing of the earlier volume spikes across both equities and crude caught the attention of traders, particularly given the absence of an obvious catalyst at the moment they occurred.

Early-morning futures markets are typically less liquid, which can make short bursts of buying and selling more noticeable than during regular trading hours. Still, the trades raised some eyebrows because whoever purchased a large amount of stock futures and sold or shorted crude futures at that moment made a lot of money just minutes later.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the CME Group declined to comment.

Algorithmic and macro-driven strategies can also generate rapid flows across asset classes without a single identifiable catalyst in early trading.

Here’s a recap of Monday’s key moments. 1. Stocks surged Monday after President Donald Trump said the U.S. and Iran had “productive” discussions in recent days about a resolution to the Middle East conflict, and that he was halting strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure. That drove the three major averages up roughly 2% and pushed international oil benchmark Brent crude down 10% to $100 per barrel. Within our portfolio, Qnity Electronics rallied over 5%, among the largest gainers in the S & P 500 . Capital One , an economically sensitive stock, climbed almost 3%, as the fall in oil prices provides relief to consumers. On the tech side, Broadcom and Nvidia roughly 4% and 1.5%, respectively. The market ended last week firmly oversold at minus 7 on the S & P Short Range Oscillator , our trusted momentum indicator. Jim Cramer believes instead of selling into the bounce, “I personally want things to let ride” because of the fast changes in investor psychology. At the same time, Director of Portfolio Analysis Jeff Marks mentioned that for investors looking to raise cash, booking some gains is rational. We have ample cash at the Club, though. 2. Another Club outperformer on Monday was GE Vernova , whose shares were up 5% and set a fresh 52-week high of nearly $921 during the session. A bullish note from Morgan Stanley added fuel to the rally in the gas turbine maker’s shares. The analysts raised their price target on the stock to $960 from $871 and reiterated their buy-equivalent rating. The firm said continued strong AI-related demand is pushing gas turbine prices even higher, which is good for GE Vernova’s margins. Jim noted that GE Vernova’s gas turbines are sold out for years. Morgan Stanley added that the company’s electrification business — home to products like transformers and switchgear, which help distribute the electricity its turbines generate across the grid — will support “incremental medium-term growth.” 3. Jim said some investors might’ve been too quick to write off Apple’s business in China following a pair of Wall Street research notes. Bank of America said its supply chain checks suggest Apple will introduce its first foldable iPhone this year, with analysts expecting higher demand from China. In a separate note, Morgan Stanley said its late 2025 survey found upgrade intention rates in China reaching all-time highs. Analysts also said interest in the foldable iPhone was surprisingly high, especially in China. “We kind of give up on China – we’re really kind of missing the point of one of the most major markets,” Jim said. In its latest quarterly earnings report , Apple’s China business showed strength after some recent challenges. 4. Stocks covered in Monday’s rapid fire at the end of the video were: Synopsys , Venture Global , and MongoDB . (Jim Cramer’s Charitable Trust is long Q, COF, AVGO, NVDA, GEV, AAPL, GLW. See here for a full list of the stocks.) As a subscriber to the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer, you will receive a trade alert before Jim makes a trade. Here’s a recap of Wednesday’s key moments. 1. Stocks tumbled on Wednesday following hotter-than-expected wholesale inflation data and rising oil prices caused by the Middle East conflict. Brent crude , the international benchmark, crept back up after Iran said some of its energy facilities were attacked and warned of a retaliatory missile strike. Jim Cramer called it a “one-two punch” for stocks, but argued that the market will rebound in the coming days as investors move past the headlines. “I feel a little more bullish than most because I’ve seen this movie before,” he said. 2. Amazon shares shed nearly 2% following a Reuters report that CEO Andy Jassy expects AI to push cloud computing revenues to $600 billion in 10 years, surpassing previous estimates by more than half. Investors aren’t loving the news because it could mean a near-term increase in AI spending. Amazon could lower costs in other ways, such as through layoffs, Cramer said. However, any increase in Amazon’s capex is a strategic, long-term decision to grow sales of Amazon Web Services, the company’s real breadwinner. He added, “We’re not in [this stock] for the short term.” 3. RBC Capital downgraded Starbucks stock to a hold-equivalent rating from a buy. Analysts pointed to lofty investor expectations for revenue growth and a lack of visibility on cost savings. Cramer described the call as a “hack downgrade,” arguing that the coffee retailer’s turnaround plan under CEO Brian Niccol remains on track. Shares are down over 2%. 4. Stocks covered in Wednesday’s rapid fire at the end of the video were: Lululemon Athletica , General Mills , Williams-Sonoma , Constellation Brands , and Disney .
Dividend-paying companies are rapidly closing the earnings growth gap with technology stocks and contributing more earnings momentum to the S&P 500. After a significant increase over the past year on this key earnings metric, the trend suggests that dividend stocks may present an even stronger case to investors seeking income and safety in a volatile market.

The earnings momentum broadening out beyond the tech sector comes at a time when investors are seeking ways to limit risk amid the second military conflict in the Middle East in under a year and a shock to the oil markets that is unprecedented.

In Q1 2025, the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index posted earnings growth of negative 5.5%. By Q4 of last year, that earnings growth rate had rebounded to positive 9%. At the same time, the Nasdaq 100 Index saw earnings growth decline from over 35% in Q2 2025 to under 15% in Q4.

Simeon Hyman, global investment strategist at ProShares, said during this week’s CNBC’s “ETF Edge” podcast that the rotation that began away from the Mag 7 tech stocks well before the war merits a deeper look from investors at a time of market uncertainty.

“We think one of best ways to take advantage of it is through quality stocks, companies growing their dividends for 25 consecutive years at minimum and that have been out of favor,” he said.

While the reversal began before the outbreak of war, Hyman said high quality, lower volatility stocks may be “kind of good to have during a conflict.”

“It’s not only the price [of the stocks] turning around but the fundamentals turning around,” he said. “Go back four quarters and all the earnings growth was coming from the tech sector and Nasdaq 100. Those dividends growers year-over-year, earnings were shrinking a little bit. But now the gap has closed and may shortly go the other way. We’re almost now to parity,” he said, referring to Bloomberg data cited by ProShares in a recent blog post on the topic.

ETF experts agree that the outlook for dividend stocks has improved across the market.

“Growth characteristics of companies in the financial sector, the health care sector, the industrial sector … those are where you often find dividend growth. They continue to experience more and more growth,” Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, told CNBC.

A long history of dividend increases reflects consistent cash flow and disciplined management, however, it has not traditionally matched the rapid profit expansion seen in the technology sector. But strong operating performance and improving margins have helped boost profits for many dividend-payers from other sectors. And as earning rise, these companies continue to increase dividends while strengthening their balance sheets. At the same time, expectations for technology stocks remain extremely high after several years of strong gains, and as tech firms are spending huge sums on AI buildouts which is stressing their balance sheets and cash flow. Dividend-paying companies outside of tech often trade at more moderate valuations, and as their earnings growth improves, investors may increasingly view them as offering both stability and expansion.

Of course, if the U.S.-Iran war — and factors such as oil prices persistently above $100 and a Strait of Hormuz closure that is prolonged — pushes up prices across a supply-depleted economy and sends the global economy into a recession, there is no sure thing for stock investors. Dividend stocks and the ProShares NOBL ETF have been caught up in the recent stock market negative sentiment, down 5% in the past month but still up close to 8% over the past year.

Hyman said in his view this is “certainly not a time to capitulate, but maybe a time to tweak around the edges,” and focus more on quality stories. “We love our dividend growers,” he said.

He noted that after the two prior Gulf wars which were prolonged conflicts, stocks were higher in the six to 12-month periods after initial pullbacks, and up by as much as 25-30%. “The history is pretty darn clear … markets do rebound,” he said.

The history is also clear, Hyman said, on dividend stock outperformance having “some durability to it.” And right now, these stocks are pulling even more weight in the market. “In addition to the durable outperformance opportunity from the dividend growers, the other thing that is very important is that it has kept overall S&P 500 fundamentals stable” Hyman said. “They are now filling the gap,” he said, as mega cap tech earnings growth slides, “and that suggests a little bit of a soft landing,” he added.

The surge in fuel prices since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran nearly two weeks ago is already driving up airfare. Consumers’ appetite for travel this year will dictate just how much.

Cathay Pacific on Thursday said it would roughly double fuel surcharges on tickets starting March 18.

Earlier this week, Australia’s Qantas said it is raising fares to help cover its costs, Scandinavian Airlines said the “unusually rapid and substantial increase” in fuel prompted it to raise prices, and Air New Zealand pulled its financial outlook “until fuel markets and operating conditions stabilise,” adding that it has made “initial fare adjustments.”

“If the conflict leads to continued elevated jet fuel costs, the airline may need to take further pricing action and adjust its network and schedule as required,” Air New Zealand said.

U.S. airline CEOs and other executives will update investors on Tuesday at the J.P. Morgan Industrials Conference in Washington, D.C.

Analysts expect an earnings hit at least in the first quarter if not the first half of the year, though the impact will depend on how long higher fuel prices last.

“We think a hit to 1Q EPS appears almost certain at this point,” UBS airline analysts Atul Maheswari and Thomas Wadewitz wrote in a note last week.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said last week on the sidelines of an event at Harvard University that higher fares were likely on the way because of the surge in fuel prices.

Kirby said travel demand is still strong, however. Two other senior airline executives at U.S. carriers, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak to media, also said travel demand has held up. If those trends persist, it could give airlines more pricing power, but that will depend on the war’s duration.

“Airlines never met a higher fare they didn’t want,” said Scott Keyes, founder of flight deal company Going, previously known as Scott’s Cheap Flights.

So what should consumers do?

Keyes said travelers can’t lose by booking early, as long as they’re not buying restrictive basic economy tickets. That way, customers can try to exchange or cancel their tickets and buy cheaper ones if airfare ends up falling.

“If you book a $500 summer flight today, and two weeks from now the price drops to $350, you can call up the airline and get the $150 difference back as a credit. Heads you win; tails the airlines lose,” he said.

Jet fuel is airlines’ biggest cost after labor, accounting for about a fifth or more of expenses, depending on the airline.

United alone spent $11.4 billion last year on fuel, at an average price of $2.44 a gallon, according to a securities filing. U.S. jet fuel on Wednesday was going for $3.78 a gallon, according to Platts.

Jefferies airline analyst Sheila Kahyaoglu said in a note Thursday that she expects “the most acute financial impact to airlines from surging oil prices to be in the next 30-90 days as airlines have been booking yields for close-in flights assuming a much lower fuel price and carriers cannot retroactively raise fares.”

She said Delta Air Lines and United, which produce most U.S. airline profits, are better positioned than other carriers because of their high-end demand. Risks to demand, particularly for more price-sensitive customers, include the recent jump in gasoline prices.

Jet fuel has more than doubled in some regions since the first U.S.–Israel attacks on Iran on Feb. 28.

Oil prices surged to roughly four-year highs after the initial strikes. Energy prices have swung wildly since then as traders assess just how long the war — and all the logistics headaches — could last.

U.S. jet fuel prices were up more than 60% from before the attacks to a peak last week, according to pricing data assessed by Platts. Jet fuel can rise by a greater degree than crude because it includes the price of processing and ever-more difficult and costly transportation from oil fields to refineries to airplane fuel tanks.

On Feb. 27, the day before the before the attacks, the cost to fill the fuel tanks of a Boeing 737-800 would have would have been about $17,000 based on average prices in New York, Houston, Chicago and Los Angeles, compiled by Argus. Less than a week later, on March 5, it would have cost more than $27,000, based on Argus prices. On Tuesday, after oil prices fell following President Donald Trump’s comment that the Iran war could end “very soon,” it would have cost around $23,000.

After prior fuel price surges, airlines started making customers pay for bags — or charging them more. Even seemingly minor changes in weight can save airlines hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars, a year in fuel. United in 2018 changed to a lighter paper stock for its in-flight magazine. In 2014, American Airlines said it would switch to digital manuals for flight attendants, following changes for pilots. It said at the time that it would save $650,000 in fuel a year.

All about capacity

High fuel prices don’t automatically mean higher fares. The ongoing strong demand for travel is a key factor and so is capacity, or the amount that carriers fly.

If airlines raise fares and passengers balk, then capacity will likely go down in the form of fewer frequencies on a route or broader cuts, in more severe cases.

“Airlines love to say fuel is expensive so you have to pay more. What they’re doing is they’re setting the expectation,” said Courtney Miller, founder of Visual Approach Analytics, an airline industry advisory firm. “They price to prevent empty seats.”

If fuel prices come down, “they’re not suddenly saying ‘We’re making too much money,'” Miller added. “But they are likely to add another flight.”

Capacity, especially to and from the Middle East, is constrained because of airspace closures and other stop-and-start flights. More than 46,000 flights have been canceled to and from the region since the Feb. 28 attacks began, aviation data firm Cirium said.

Those constraints are driving up fares as well as demand, as United’s Kirby said, from regions where customers are looking for alterative routes.

Airspace closures are also requiring airlines to take longer, more fuel-guzzling routes, but many have strong demand, too.

Qantas, for example, told CNBC that its flight from Perth, Australia, to London is temporarily stopping in Singapore to refuel, allowing it to pick up another 60 customers, and that its Perth-London and Perth-Paris routes are more than 90% full this month, 15 percentage points higher than normal for this time of year.

Finnair said the increased demand for travel to Asia from Helsinki has pushed up its prices by 15% on average.

“The impact of higher fuel prices will be reflected in market fares with a delay, as airlines typically hedge at least part of their fuel purchases,” it said.

Airlines have been grappling with airspace closures for years, including from on-and-off conflict in the Middle East and since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, that have left a large swath of airspace out of use for many carriers.

‘You can’t dry up an airport’

Most U.S. airlines no longer hedge fuel costs, or lock in prices using futures and other securities. Southwest Airlines was one of the last holdouts, and it quit last year. A spokesman for the Dallas-based airline told CNBC that Southwest currently has “no plans” to resume hedging.

That leaves U.S. carriers more susceptible to price swings.

Kirby said there would likely be an impact to United’s first-quarter results and to the second quarter if the war — and blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping channel — persists. However, he said demand was increasing sharply from regions that have been affected by the thousands of flight cancellations and airspace closures in the Middle East.

Because of airlines’ upbeat outlooks on demand to start the year, “the environment is conducive for passing along fare increases. Further, should jet fuel stay higher for longer, it should help push off-peak capacity lower,” supporting unit revenues, UBS analysts said.

Rick Joswick, who heads of near-term oil research and analytics at S&P Global Energy, told CNBC that “demand for jet fuel is inelastic. You cannot shortchange an airport. If the cost of jet fuel goes up, it’s not like the plane will choose not to fly that day.

“You can’t dry up an airport,” he said.

Rising oil prices may not just be a headwind to President Donald Trump’s fight to lower inflation. They could also undermine his signature legislative achievement.

Almost all of the economic effect of the individual tax cuts in the “big beautiful bill” — from both smaller withholdings and sweetened tax refunds — could be erased if oil prices remain elevated by more than $20 compared with prices before the U.S.-Iran war, according to Raymond James.

“With the $25 move last week, if the oil price stays here, it essentially offsets the fiscal benefit from the [One Big Beautiful Bill Act],” strategist Tavis McCourt wrote in a note.

McCourt’s analysis relies on applying any increase in oil market prices to the more than $420 billion that consumers spent on gasoline in the fourth quarter of 2025. He told CNBC in an interview that in his calculations he accounted for both potential reduced demand due to higher prices and companies’ need to pad margins.

That leads him to conclude that a $20 move in oil prices could mean consumers spending $150 billion more at the pump. The Tax Foundation estimates that the individual tax cuts from the “big beautiful bill” total $129 billion for 2025, with the overwhelming majority of it set to appear through tax refunds this filing season.

U.S. oil before the war on Feb. 27 closed at $67.02. As of Tuesday morning, after a major whiplash in prices on Monday, oil is still trading more than $20 a barrel higher at $88.20.

Stephanie Roth, chief economist at Wolfe Research, said in an interview Monday that her estimations for the hit consumers could take with elevated oil prices are also similar to the elevated spending she projected from the tax law. Wolfe said in a Tuesday note, though, that oil prices would need to remain above $100 for some time for that to happen.

“In all these scenarios, it has to last longer than it is now,” Roth said. “The impact on gas prices so far has been short-lived, and modest compared to how it may ultimately play out.”

But it will take time for oil prices to come down after the end of the war. Trump said in an interview with a CBS News reporter on Monday that the war is “very complete,” though he didn’t give a timeline for the war’s end in a press conference the same day.

McCourt noted that after the Gulf War in 1990 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 it took about six months for oil prices to get back to levels where they were before.

Consequences of weaker stimulus

Fiscal stimulus from the tax law was expected to boost the economy in 2026, with some economists predicting a reacceleration of U.S. growth partially thanks to the law.

Now, an oil price shock is hitting right as consumers are set to get those tax refunds. Citadel Securities last week estimated that only 30% of refunds had been distributed by March 1, with the figure expected to rise to around 75% by May 1.

“The bottom line is that if we were expecting those tax refunds to lift consumer spending, these higher oil prices are just redirecting all that cash toward energy costs,” wrote Gabriel Shahin, CEO of Falcon Wealth Planning, in an email to CNBC. “It’s essentially voiding out the economic boost we were set to see.”

But Dan Niles, portfolio manager at Niles Investment Management, framed the situation as the refunds helping the economy weather higher oil prices.

He pointed to when oil hit similar prices in 2022 and 2023 while Wall Street broadly predicted a recession on the horizon thanks to rising interest rates.

“You already had that stress tested a bit,” Niles said. “So if that’s the case back then, and coming off of inflation surging in 2021, and you still didn’t get a recession, why would you think inflation down at 3% and oil at $100 would cause a recession now?”

Many on Wall Street have drawn similarities between the current surge in prices to that of four years ago, when Russia invaded Ukraine.

Roth, though, cautioned investors against relying too much on that comparison.

“The economic backdrop is not a mirror image of where we are today,” she said. “Core inflation was running at 5.5% compared to 3% today. Job growth was running at around 500,000, now we’re at 37,000 over the past couple of months. So it’s just an entirely different backdrop.”
