Joybuy, JD.com’s international online shopping brand, launches in six new markets, including the U.K. and Germany, with the company banking on fast deliveries and high-quality products to get an edge on rivals.

While peers like AliExpress and Temu operate an asset-light model and ship goods directly from China, JD.com has its own local warehouses and logistics networks that enable it to minimize delivery times.

The approach has been successful in China, where JD has developed an extensive logistics network for super-fast deliveries and established itself as a destination for domestic consumers to buy global brands such as Apple.

The Chinese tech giant said customers in Europe can get same-day delivery on orders placed before 11 a.m. For orders over £29 in the U.K., there’s no extra cost.

Joybuy will also feature brand stores from companies including L’Oréal Paris and De’Longhi. These are effectively a branded space in the Joybuy app where companies can showcase their official goods.

JD.com is stepping into a highly-competitive European e-commerce market, which features heavyweights like Amazon, as well as smaller local players and rival services from Alibaba‘s AliExpress and Temu-owner PDD.

Both AliExpress and Temu have sought to bring competitively-priced products to the European market, but have relied on a marketplace model of third-party merchants who sell through their platforms.

While Temu and AliExpress have been operating internationally for the past few years, JD is hoping to catch up.

Joybuy emphasizes its ownership of much of the inventory that it sells.

“We’re at first party retailer, we’re completely different to every other retailer based on our customer proposition,” Matthew Nobbs, U.K. managing director of Joybuy, told CNBC in an interview.

“So we don’t do any de minimus business. We’re a retailer, first, and foremost for brands, and that’s our core.”

“De minimis” refers to a rule in various countries that gives customs duties exemptions for low-value goods.

Delivery speed

Nobbs said that Joybuy has been in a “beta” testing phase for more than six months and the platform is now ready for a full launch.

While Joybuy is offering free same-day delivery for orders worth over £29, the company has also launched a monthly membership service called JoyPlus. This will cost £3.99 and give users unlimited free delivery. In comparison, Amazon Prime in the U.K. costs £8.99.

“Supply chain is the strength of the core of everything that we do,” Nobbs said.

Same-day delivery will not be available to all customers in countries where Joybuy is launching, but the group plans to expand its warehouse footprint eventually.

The Joybuy executive said the company will expand its warehousing presence across the U.K. and other markets “step-by-step.”

Iran is firing fewer missiles than it did at the start of the war on Feb 28, the top US general said on March 4, as he argued Iran’s military capabilities were greatly diminished as the United States expands its strikes inside Iran.

“We will now begin to expand inland striking progressively deeper into Iranian territory, and creating additional freedom of maneuver for US forces,” General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a news briefing at the Pentagon.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the United States was winning in its war against Iran, even as he lamented six US troops killed so far in the conflict.

He added the US would outlast Iran.

Mr Hegseth confirmed that the US military sank an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka, calling it the first sinking of an enemy ship by torpedo since World War II.

The US sinking was first reported by Reuters.

“An American submarine sunk an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters. Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo. Quiet death,” Mr Hegseth said.

President Donald Trump’s move Thursday to sign an executive order easing federal restrictions on marijuana — and clearing the way for a Medicare pilot program covering CBD — caps a coordinated, yearlong push by the cannabis industry that combined traditional lobbying, sizable political donations, data-driven messaging and direct outreach to the president’s inner circle, industry insiders told CNBC.

Despite long-standing GOP opposition to loosening drug laws — including a small wave of bills from lawmakers seeking to tighten rules after the executive order — industry advocates have claimed a victory. They see the order as a success in reframing marijuana not as a social issue, but as a pro-business policy, ultimately winning over a president famous for his sobriety.

“I’ve never been inundated by so many people as I have about” reclassifying marijuana, Trump said during a signing ceremony in the Oval Office on Thursday.

Three figures emerged as the primary architects of this policy shift, according to multiple insiders, including one CEO of a cannabis company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, who requested anonymity to speak candidly. The key players were Howard Kessler, a Palm Beach billionaire and longtime friend of the president; Kim Rivers, the CEO of cannabis giant Trulieve; and Tony Fabrizio, Trump’s longtime pollster, the people said.

A leukemia survivor, Kessler began advocating for the medical benefits of cannabis for seniors in 2019, founding The Commonwealth Project to advance the cause.
Other prominent members of the Trump administration noted Kessler’s influence on Thursday.

During the signing ceremony, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said, “We wouldn’t be here today” without Kessler.

Oz added that Kessler had promised to finally stop calling the president about the issue once the order was signed.

Kessler did not respond to a request for comment.

The White House said Trump’s executive order would open up access for new treatments.

“The presence of several leaders from law enforcement and veterans groups at the Oval Office signing is indicative of how President Trump continues to push the envelope to support our nation’s heroes,” White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement.

In an attempt to facilitate greater participation from resident Indians in the foreign portfolio investment landscape, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has released a consultation paper outlining several key proposals aimed at increasing the involvement of Indian investors in FPIs.

These proposals are designed to create a more inclusive investment environment, particularly for Indian non-individuals and mutual funds, allowing them to play a more significant role in international investment schemes.

The proposed measures focus on expanding the scope of Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) participation by resident Indians through a series of regulatory changes. SEBI’s move is expected to pave the way for a broader range of investment options and offer Indian investors increased opportunities to diversify their portfolios globally.

The consultation paper invites public feedback on these suggestions, which could have a substantial impact on the investment landscape.

Retail Schemes in IFSCs: The proposal suggests enabling retail schemes based in International Financial Services Centres (IFSCs) in India, with resident Indian non-individuals acting as sponsors or managers, to register as FPIs. These schemes would be aligned with existing investment regulations for better clarity and accessibility.

Alignment of Contribution Limits: SEBI proposes to align the contribution limits for resident Indian non-individuals with the IFSCA (Fund Management) Regulations, 2025. This move would harmonize the contribution thresholds for various types of funds operating within IFSCs, including venture capital, restricted schemes, and retail schemes.

Indian Mutual Funds as Constituents of FPIs: The proposal seeks to allow Indian mutual funds to become constituents of FPIs, enabling them to invest in overseas mutual funds or unit trusts with exposure to Indian securities. This is intended to streamline the investment process and enhance the transparency of such investments.

Background

Currently, under the SEBI Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPI) Regulations, 2019, resident Indians, including non-resident Indians (NRIs) and overseas citizens of India (OCIs), are restricted from directly registering as FPIs.However, these individuals are allowed to be constituents of FPIs, subject to specific conditions on contribution limits and control within the funds. For resident Indian non-individuals, participation in FPIs is permitted if they meet certain criteria, including the type of funds they manage or sponsor and the contribution limits for specific categories of funds. The consultation paper comes at a time when the government is looking to enhance the role of IFSCs in India’s financial sector, with an eye on attracting more global capital. By proposing to widen the scope for resident Indian participation, SEBI aims to make the FPI route more accessible for a broader range of investors, including mutual funds, which could significantly diversify their foreign investments.

The proposals also reflect an effort to bring Indian financial regulations in line with international standards while fostering a more dynamic and globally connected investment environment.

The consultation process:

The public has been invited to submit comments on these proposals by August 29, 2025, through the SEBI website. SEBI’s move to open up the process for public input underscores the importance of stakeholder feedback in shaping policies that affect both retail and institutional investors.

The consultation process will likely influence the final regulatory framework and could signal a shift towards more liberalized foreign investment rules for Indian participants.

With the introduction of these measures, the Indian investment community is poised to see significant changes that could reshape the way FPIs operate within India, offering new avenues for growth and diversification in the global markets.

Elon Musk’s Tesla has applied to test and eventually deploy its Robotaxi vehicles in Phoenix, Arizona, following in the footsteps of market leader Waymo.

Tesla has applied to conduct autonomous vehicle testing and operations, with and without human safety drivers on board, in Arizona, a spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Transportation told CNBC on Thursday. A decision on the application is expected at the end of July, and Tesla has “expressed interest in operating within the Phoenix Metro area,” the spokesperson said via email.

Reuters first reported Tesla’s Arizona ambitions.

The effort to expand to Arizona comes after Tesla in June began a pilot test of its robotaxis in Austin, Texas. Tesla’s Austin fleet includes Model Y SUVs that are equipped with the company’s newest, automated driving systems. Those vehicles are remotely supervised by employees in an undisclosed operations center, and they each include a human safety supervisor who rides with passengers.

The safety supervisor sits in the front passenger seat, accompanying riders, who are invited fans of Tesla. The supervisor can intervene should the Tesla Robotaxis get into trouble.

Waymo, owned by Google parent Alphabet, opened up a driverless robotaxi service to the public in the Phoenix area in 2020, and now operates a fleet of 400 robotaxis there, the company told CNBC on Thursday.

Tesla, which was once seen as a self-driving pioneer, is now working to catch up to Waymo. The companies have distinct approaches to self-driving technology. Tesla claims its choice to mostly use cameras instead of expensive sensors like lidar will make its autonomous vehicles more economically viable.

The Musk company’s initial efforts in Austin have run into issues.

One invited passenger, who runs a Tesla-focused YouTube channel called Dirty Tesla, captured an incident on camera where his Robotaxi dinged a parked car outside of a restaurant.

Other incidents where Tesla Robotaxis violated rules of the road in Austin have also been captured on camera and circulated on social media, drawing regulatory scrutiny from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the federal vehicle safety agency.

Tesla is scheduled to hold a second-quarter earnings call on July 23, during which executives are expected to discuss the initial Robotaxi pilot.

Separately, Musk on Wednesday said on X that Tesla’s Robotaxi service will expand to the San Francisco Bay Area “probably in a month or two.”

California Public Utilities Commission and the California Department of Motor Vehicles told CNBC on Thursday that Tesla has not yet applied for approvals to begin driverless testing or commercial deployment of its Robotaxis in the state.

The California DMV sued Tesla in 2022 alleging that the company made false claims in marketing and advertising about its vehicles’ self-driving capabilities.

Klarna has agreed a major new distribution partnership with fellow fintech unicorn Stripe, in a bid to expand reach and add more merchants in the lead-up to its upcoming listing in the U.S.

Klarna’s buy now, pay later (BNPL) service will become available as a payment option for merchants using Stripe’s payment tools in 26 countries, the two companies told CNBC Tuesday.

This isn’t the first time Klarna and Stripe have partnered. In 2021, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic-fueled fintech craze, Stripe announced Klarna would offer its BNPL plans to the U.S. firm’s merchants.

BNPL plans are installment loans that allow a consumer to buy something online or in store and then pay off their debt, either at a later date or over a period of equal monthly installments. BNPL arrangements have become a popular way for people to spread the cost of everyday purchases.

The new tie-up with Stripe gives Klarna a big boost at a time when it’s gearing up for a hotly anticipated initial public offering. Klarna confidentially filed to IPO in the United States in November. The company could fetch a valuation of as much as $20 billion, according to a Bloomberg News report out last year.

Klarna makes money from the fees that retailers pay on each transaction processed through its platform. In return for giving Klarna visibility as a payment option in its checkout tools, Stripe will get a share of the money Klarna makes from a given transaction.

Klarna declined to disclose financial terms of its deal with Stripe.

“This is really significant for Klarna,” David Sykes, Klarna’s chief commercial officer, told CNBC, adding the company has already doubled the number of new merchants in the three months since it began implementing the new integration with Stripe in October.

“We added 100,000 new merchants in 2024 and we are already seeing that growth rate increase with this agreement.” he added.

Analysts recently valued Klarna, which was founded in 2005, in the $15 billion range. At its peak during the pandemic-led surge in fintech stocks, the company attracted a valuation of $46 billion in a funding round led by SoftBank’s Vision Fund 2 back in 2021.

In 2022, Klarna took an 85% haircut in a fresh round of funding that valued the firm at $6.7 billion.

The deal also has the potential to drive incremental revenue gains for Stripe, too.

BNPL proponents tout these plans as a way to increase the overall level of transactions, as shoppers can buy more items during a shorter term window and then pay them off over a longer timeframe.

A study Stripe ran last year found businesses offering BNPL as a payment method generated up to 14% more revenue from increased conversion and higher average order values.

“We’ve seen BNPL volume grow 172% last year on Stripe, which is much faster than other mainstream payment methods,” Jeanne Grosser, chief business officer of Stripe, told CNBC, adding that the deal with Klarna was a “win-win” for both firms.

Stripe has long been speculated to be a near-term IPO candidate — for its part, though, the company says it’s in no rush. The company, also a victim of a slump in fintech valuations, slashed its valuation to $50 billion in 2023 from $95 billion in 2021.
