Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company on Thursday reported a 35% increase in fourth-quarter profit, beating estimates and hitting a fresh record as demand for artificial intelligence chips remained strong.

Here are the company’s results versus LSEG SmartEstimates, which are weighted toward forecasts from analysts who are more consistently accurate:

Revenue: 1.046 trillion new Taiwan dollars ($33.73 billion), vs. NT$1.034 trillion expected

Net income: NT$505.74 billion, vs. NT$478.37 billion expected

The world’s largest contract chipmaker has now posted year-over-year profit growth for eight consecutive quarters.

Meanwhile, TSMC’s revenue in the December quarter rose by 20.5% from a year ago to surpass NT$1 trillion, also beating forecasts.

In an earnings call, TSMC executives guided revenue for the current quarter to hit between $34.6 billion and $35.8 billion, up 4% sequentially, or up 38% year-over-year at the midpoint.

“We expect our business to be supported by continued strong demand for our leading edge process technologies,” said TSMC’s Chief Financial Officer Wendell Huang during an earnings call, adding that the company’s profit margins have been increasing.

TSMC, Asia’s largest technology company by market capitalization, has benefited greatly from the proliferation of artificial intelligence, producing advanced AI processors for clients such as Nvidia and AMD.

Advanced chips

The company’s high-performance computing division, which includes artificial intelligence and 5G applications, made up the majority of sales in the October-December quarter at 55%. Demand from smartphones made up 32% of sales.

TSMC said advanced chips measuring 7-nanometer or smaller made up 77% of total wafer revenue during the quarter. For full-year 2025, those chips made up 74% of revenue, up from 69% in 2024.

In semiconductor technology, smaller nanometer sizes indicate more compact transistor designs, allowing faster processing speeds and greater energy efficiency.

The company is looking to further ramp up its cutting-edge 2 nm offerings this year, after rolling out mass production last quarter.

With TSMC further leaning into its advanced products, it said that its capital expenditure was expected to reach between $52 billion and $56 billion in 2026, as compared to $40.9 billion in 2025.

“The demand for AI remains very strong, driving overall chip demand across the entire server industry,” Counterpoint Research senior analyst Jake Lai told CNBC, predicting that 2026 will be another “breakout year” for AI server demand.

“With TSMC’s ongoing 2nm capacity expansion and new production contributing to revenue, along with continuous expansion of advanced packaging… TSMC is expected to maintain strong performance in 2026,” Lai said.

However, he added that chip demand tied to consumer electronics such as smartphones and PCs could be affected by the ongoing memory shortage and price hikes.

During the earnings call on Thursday, TSMC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer C.C. Wei acknowledged the memory shortage but argued that TSMC is focused on high-end smartphones, which are less sensitive to the memory prices.

However, Wei flagged global tariff policies as a potential risk factor headed into 2026.

Global expansion

TSMC has been expanding globally in recent years, with major projects underway in Japan, Europe, and Arizona, where it is accelerating capacity expansion.

Chief Executive C.C. Wei said Thursday that the company recently purchased additional land in Arizona to support new facilities. “We are going to expand many fabs over there, and this gigafab cluster can help us to improve the productivity, to lower the cost and to serve our customers in the U.S. better,” he added.

While these expansions could help lessen the impact of global tariffs in markets such as the U.S., the company has also warned that overseas plants will operate at diluted margins compared to those in Taiwan.

Live Events

Aluminum and Alumina

Vedanta achieved its highest-ever quarterly alumina production at 653 kt, a sharp 31% YoY increase from 499 kt in Q2 FY25, driven by record output at the Lanjigarh refinery. Aluminum production stood at 617 kt, marginally up 1% YoY from 609 kt.Within aluminum operations, Jharsuguda contributed 467 kt (up 2% YoY) while BALCO added 150 kt, remaining steady compared to 149 kt a year ago. For the first half (H1), total aluminum production stood at 1,222 kt, nearly flat with the prior year.

Zinc India

At Zinc India, mined metal production rose 1% YoY to 258 kt, the highest-ever for a second quarter. However, saleable metal output declined 6% YoY to 246 kt due to lower refined lead and silver volumes.

Refined Zinc rose 2% YoY to 202 kt, while refined Lead dropped sharply by 29% YoY to 45 kt.

Meanwhile, silver production fell 22% YoY to 144 tonnes (4.6 mn ounces).

For H1 FY26, mined metal production stood at 523 kt, also a record, up 1% from the previous year.

Zinc International

Zinc International delivered strong growth, with total mined metal production up 38% YoY to 60 kt in Q2 FY26, compared to 44 kt in Q2 FY25. This was largely driven by a 54% YoY rise in Gamsberg output to 49 kt, while BMM declined slightly by 5% YoY to 11 kt.

For the half year, production surged 44% YoY to 117 kt.

Oil & Gas

Vedanta’s oil and gas business saw declines during the quarter. Average daily gross operated production fell 15% YoY to 89.3 kboepd, compared to 104.9 kboepd in Q2 FY25. Rajasthan fields contributed 70.9 kboepd, down 17% YoY, while Ravva declined 25% YoY to 8.2 kboepd. In contrast, Cambay production rose 38% YoY to 6.6 kboepd.

On a working interest basis, production dropped 15% YoY to 58.2 kboepd.

Iron Ore and Pig Iron

Iron ore production declined due to weather disruptions. Saleable ore output fell 19% YoY to 1.1 mn tonnes, while sales dropped 33% YoY to 0.7 mn tonnes.

Pig iron, however, achieved a record high with production up 26% YoY to 238 kt in Q2, aided by blast furnace debottlenecking.

Steel

The steel division reported a 8% YoY decline in finished steel production to 274 kt, against 296 kt in Q2 FY25. Within this, pig iron output dropped 53% YoY to 41 kt, while billets rose 43% YoY to 232 kt. TMT bar and wire rod production increased 18% and 59% YoY, respectively, while ductile iron pipes fell 87% YoY.

FACOR

Ferro Alloys Corporation (FACOR) posted a 24% YoY increase in ore production to 47 kt. However, ferro chrome output fell 28% YoY to 19 kt due to a planned one-month furnace shutdown.

Copper India

Copper cathode production was marginally lower, at 40 kt in Q2 FY26, down 3% YoY from 41 kt. The decline was attributed to temporary raw material sourcing issues.

Power

Power sales dipped slightly, with total sales down 2% YoY to 4,331 mn units in Q2. TSPL contributed 2,789 mn units, a 3% YoY decline, while sales from Jharsuguda and BALCO fell 57% and 50% YoY, respectively.

The newly commissioned Meenakshi 1000 MW unit supplied 459 mn units, while Athena’s 600 MW plant contributed 336 mn units in its first quarter of operation.

The Sensex has effectively gone nowhere over the past 12 months, posting a -0.7% return and falling behind most global peers, a sobering outcome despite a backdrop of policy tailwinds like GST and income-tax relief, interest rate cuts, and resilient domestic fund inflows.

Analysts point to weak corporate earnings, persistent foreign portfolio investor (FPI) selling, and elevated valuations as the key reasons behind the muted performance.

From being one of the strongest performers among global and emerging markets just a year ago, Indian equities have slipped to the bottom of the performance table in what many market participants are calling a “stunning reversal of fortune.”

So far in 2025, FPIs have pulled out Rs 1.4 lakh crore from Dalal Street, reallocating investments to other countries.

According to Naveen Chouhan, “The persistent FII selling trend over the past year can largely be attributed to two primary factors: superior performance of developed markets and currency concerns. FIIs are reallocating capital to their home markets and other developed economies where returns have been more attractive relative to emerging markets. The Indian rupee has weakened relative to major global currencies.”

Live Events

Earnings have also failed to meet expectations. Corporate earnings growth for Nifty 50 companies has been limited to mid-single digits, with delayed demand recovery and input cost pressures weighing on margins.“If you look at last year, valuation peaked around September-end and with corporate earnings growth moderating to mid-single digits, it is no surprise that equity indices have hardly delivered any returns over the past year,” said Krishnan V R, Chief of Quantitative Research, Marcellus Investment Managers.Market sentiment has also been hit by political and policy-related uncertainties. “Populist measures adopted at the beginning of the 3rd term by the government and pursuant slowdown in government capex also deteriorated market sentiments. Global uncertainties led to flight of capital to safe havens,” said Sunny Agrawal, Head of Fundamental Research at SBI Securities.

Trade tensions with the US have added to the pressure, creating policy uncertainty that heightened investor caution and accelerated portfolio shifts towards cheaper emerging markets.

Despite FPI selling, steady mutual fund SIP inflows have helped cushion the market from a deeper fall. Retail investor participation through SIPs remains strong, limiting downside pressure. Analysts note that the market is currently in a time correction phase, with valuations staying elevated and prices consolidating instead of declining sharply.

“Markets are essentially moving in line with earnings growth. The upcoming Q2 earnings season is likely to be in a similar line to Q1; meaningful activities are likely to be visible in the second half of the current fiscal year,” said Neeraj Chadawar, Head of Fundamental and Quantitative Research, Axis Securities.

What’s next?

Experts see potential catalysts for a turnaround.

“There is a growing anticipation of additional policy actions that could support the market. CRR cut by the RBI, which would release liquidity into the system and potentially lower interest costs for businesses and interest rate cuts expected in the next 2 to 3 months,” said Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research at Kotak Securities.

Brokerage firm Emkay Global is also optimistic: “The earnings cycle is bottoming out and strong fiscal and monetary stimuli should catalyze a consumption-led macro recovery in 2HFY26. Domestic flows remain robust and there are no signs of weakening – this offsets the FPI and promoter selling to a large degree. There may be some choppiness in the short term until earnings visibility emerges: we see any significant correction as an entry opportunity.”

Analysts stress that flat growth periods can provide long-term investors with opportunities to accumulate units at lower prices through SIPs. “A phase of above-average returns will be followed by below-average returns and this goes on… decide the intensity of such mean reverting oscillation,” said Umesh Kumar Mehta, CIO, SAMCO Mutual Fund.

While near-term performance has been disappointing, market experts remain confident that India’s long-term growth story remains intact and expect strong earnings growth revival from FY27 onwards.

It’s a sign of how some automakers are pulling ahead, while BYD remains the market leader by far.

Xiaomi delivered a record number of electric vehicles in March, exceeding 29,000 units, the company announced on social media. That topped its prior run of delivering more than 20,000 vehicles in each of the past five months.

The SU7, Xiaomi’s flagship model, was involved in a crash on a highway on Tuesday that left three dead. The automaker on Tuesday afternoon released a statement on Chinese social media that the vehicle was in navigation on autopilot mode before the accident.

Based on preliminary information, the road was obstructed because of construction. The driver took control of the car but collided with construction infrastructure. Xiaomi added in the release that investigations were underway.

That came two weeks after the automaker announced on March 18 its goal to deliver 350,000 vehicles this year. There are also talks of the automaker expanding its second EV factory in Beijing to meet demand, Bloomberg reported on March 18. Xiaomi did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

Its competitor Xpeng in March delivered 33,205 vehicles, the fifth consecutive month it has delivered over 30,000 units per month and reflecting a 268% surge in deliveries from the same month last year. March is also the fifth consecutive month the company has delivered over 15,000 units of the Mona M03.

Leapmotor delivered 37,095 vehicles, reflecting a 154% year-over-year growth. The company’s cars had gained early traction with Chinese consumers since most come with a fuel tank for charging the vehicle’s battery, reducing anxiety about driving range.

Palantir is rolling out its first two artificial intelligence-enabled systems to the U.S. Army, the company said Friday.

The Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node systems, or TITAN, act as a mobile ground station that harness AI to collect data from space sensors to assist soldiers with warfare strategy and improve strike targeting and accuracy, according to Palantir.

President and Chief Technology Officer of Palantir USG Akash Jain called the agreement a “leapfrog moment” for the U.S. Army as it makes a big investment in software during an interview with CNBC’s Morgan Brennan.

Palantir won the $178 million contract last March, beating out competitor and defense giant RTX Corporation. It marked a key milestone for the company known for its data analysis and software services, as well as the first time a software company has worked as a primary contractor for a significant hardware program.

The company has long provided solutions to U.S. government and defense agencies, showing 45% year-over-year growth in that segment last quarter. The agreement with Palantir also underscores the shifting landscape of software use on the battlefield. Earlier this week, Scale AI announced a deal with the Department of Defense for a flagship AI agent program.

The agreement includes a total of 10 TITAN systems. Each system includes an advanced system with two larger trucks and a basic system with two vehicles delivered over five delivery orders, Jain explained. The systems allow soldiers to make intelligence decisions without requiring the cloud, putting “all that power in the back of a truck,” he added.

Palantir also joined forces with Northrop Grumman, L3Harris and Palmer Luckey-founded defense tech startup Anduril Industries on some capabilities for the program.

The news from Palantir comes during a volatile period for the 2024 S&P 500 front-runner. Shares have lost more than one-fourth of their value over the past month as risk-off sentiment hits Wall Street and the buzzing tech sector. Last month, shares jumped 24% to a record high after the company reported strong earnings and guidance fueled by AI demand.

Palantir has been a prime beneficiary of the AI tailwinds that have swept the broader industry and market, jumping 340% last year. The company’s CEO, Alex Karp, has been a vocal proponent of investing in the U.S. tech sector to protect against adversaries.

In response to DeepSeek’s sudden rush onto the tech scene in January, Karp told CNBC’s Sara Eisen that the U.S. needs an “all-country effort” to protect American innovation from getting stolen and misused.

Jain told CNBC that Palantir has been harnessing soldier feedback as it works to deliver the systems on time and on budget.

— CNBC’S Morgan Brennan contributed reporting.

The Chinese company, which is largely known for its smartphones and home appliances, reiterated plans to deliver 100,000 SU7 vehicles by the end of November. Xiaomi first revealed plans to make cars in 2021 and began building a dedicated manufacturing plant the same year.

The company released the basic version of the SU7, its first car, in late March for about $4,000 less than Tesla‘s cheapest car — Model 3 — in China at the time. Tesla subsequently cut the car’s price by about $2,000. Xiaomi has delivered more than 75,000 SU7 cars to date, including October’s figures.

While Xpeng delivered a monthly record of more than 20,000 cars in September, with about half owed to its newly launched, lower-cost brand Mona, Nio has struggled to keep monthly deliveries above 20,000 cars.

“News of 20k deliveries in October confirms that [Xiaomi] is going to be a force to reckon with in the world’s largest EV market,” said Brian Tycangco, an analyst at Stansberry Research.

He said Xiaomi’s electric car gross profit margins in August were similar to Xpeng’s that month, and have likely improved since, given ramped up production.

Xiaomi on Tuesday also announced it was taking preorders for the high-end sports version, SU7 Ultra, starting at 814,900 yuan ($114,304), ahead of a product release in March 2025. The company claimed that within 10 minutes, it received more than 3,600 preorders, each requiring a 10,000 yuan deposit.

The new model and its touted achievements on the Nurburgring race track in Germany will likely help Xiaomi sell more of its premium SU7 Max car, which costs just 299,900 yuan, Citi analysts said in a report. They now expect Xiaomi to deliver 250,000 cars next year, up from 238,000 previously forecast.

Xiaomi claimed a prototype of the SU7 Ultra this week became the fastest four-door sedan to complete the German race track.

Citi analysts increased their price target on Xiaomi to 30.60 Hong Kong dollars ($3.94), up from 22.70 HK dollars. They also raised forecasts for the company’s smartphone shipments, following the launch of Xiaomi’s flagship Mi 15 device Tuesday — the first phone to use Qualcomm’s newest chipset.

Despite the strong performance, “ETF Edge” host Bob Pisani contends ETFs built around a theme often come and go.

“If I am going to play the industrials in a thematic way, I like the route of going active,” the firm’s managing director said. “I do think there is staying power here as opposed to some of the fads we’ve seen in the thematic space — particularly those that are a little more tech and growth oriented.”

European shares closed higher on Thursday, boosted by banking, technology and healthcare stocks, though they finished below session highs after the European Central Bank cut lending rates for the first time since 2019 but left the timing of future moves unclear.

The pan-European STOXX 600 closed 0.7% higher, off record high levels hit earlier in the session.

The ECB went ahead with its first interest rate cut since 2019, citing progress in tackling inflation even as it acknowledged the fight was far from over.

“Arguably the ECB has been cornered to a rate cut today which reduced somewhat its credibility in relation to ‘data dependency’,” said Janet Mui, head of market analysis at wealth manager RBC Brewin Dolphin.

“Overall, there are likely to be further rate cuts in this cycle as disinflation has made huge progress and is set to continue, but the path of the rate cuts is difficult to pinpoint, as economic growth is on a better footing again”In new forecasts, the ECB said it expected inflation to average 2.2% in 2025 – up from a previous estimate of 2.0% and meaning it was now seen holding above the central bank’s 2% target well into next year.ECB President Christine Lagarde said that only one ECB Governing Council member had opposed the bank’s decision to cut interest rates earlier in the day.European lenders led sectoral gains, rising 1.7%, while healthcare was another boost, advancing 1.4% as Novo Nordisk rose almost 4% to hit a record high.

Technology stocks closed 1.2% higher, holding near its highest since December 2000, with German enterprise software giant SAP rising 3.6% after CEO Christian Klein gave encouraging guidance for 2026 and 2027. The stock topped Germany’s DAX 40, which closed 0.4% up.

Dutch semiconductor firm ASML also extended its gains from Wednesday, rising 1.5%.

Rate-sensitive sectors like utility and real estate were amongst the laggards, falling 0.9% and 0.6%, respectively.

Among other stocks, Nemetschek advanced 6.2% as the German software developer agreed to buy U.S. software provider GoCanvas.

On the data front, euro zone retail sales fell more than anticipated in April, declining 0.5% against expectations of a 0.3% decline.

Movie theaters were looking for a savior and “ Dune: Part Two ” is delivering on the promise. Armed with sandworms, big screen spectacle and the star power of Timothée Chalamet, Denis Villeneuve ’s science fiction epic stormed the North American box office this weekend earning $81.5 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Internationally, it earned $97 million, bringing its global debut to $178.5 million.

“Denis made a really extraordinary and special film and its been really exciting to see people respond,” said Mary Parent, a producer on both “Dune” films and chairman of worldwide production at Legendary. “It was made for the big screen and it feels like it’s being received as a cinematic event.”

It’s the first major hit of 2024, and one that was sorely needed by exhibitors. Although there have been holdovers from December that have continued to earn, like Warner Bros.’ “ Wonka ” (also starring Chalamet) and Sony’s romantic comedy “Anyone But You,” the box office is in a bit of a drought. In the first two months of 2024, no films have crossed $100 million domestically. The highest earning movies have been “The Beekeeper,” “Bob Marley: One Love” and “Mean Girls.”

“Dune 2″ rode a wave of great reviews (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) into a marketplace that was essentially free of competition. Warner Bros. released it in 4,071 locations in the U.S. and Canada, where audiences across the board gave it the highest PostTrak marks and an A CinemaScore. According to exit data, men accounted for 59% of opening weekend ticket buyers and 64% were over the age of 25. The sequel was primarily financed by Legendary and its production budget, previously reported to be in the $122 million range, is closer to $190 million.

“It really captured the marketplace,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution. “It’s a cultural moment globally.”

Premium large format screens like IMAX and 70mm accounted for 48% of the opening weekend business. It marked a March record for IMAX, which made up $18.5 million of the overall take. Villeneuve filmed the movie using IMAX cameras. Unlike “ Oppenheimer,” it was shot on digital, but with the extra time with the strike delay they were able to make film prints as well and the film format is proving a popular draw for audiences.

“Our most iconic film locations are virtually sold out for weeks,” said IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond.

The $81.5 million debut is also a record for its director Villeneuve, and stars Chalamet, Austin Butler and Rebecca Ferguson.

Originally planned for an October 2023 release, Warner Bros. bumped the movie to March amid the Hollywood strikes that would have prevented its starry cast from doing the promotional circuit. The global promo tour has been on hyperdrive for about a month, driving conversations with buzzy interviews, the viral sandworm-inspired popcorn bucket and eye-popping fashion moments from the stylish young cast – peaking with Zendaya’s silver cyborg showstopper (vintage Mugler) in London. They’ve made stops in Mexico City, South Korea, Abu Dhabi and New York City.

“We worked very hard to be ready for that (original) date but we very much felt that, especially with this incredible cast, that it was worth waiting for,” Parent said.

Goldstein added that there was “a lot of debate” over whether or not to release it during the strikes but they knew that they needed the cast to “fully realize the movie.”

“You don’t make movie stars any place other than theaters,” Goldstein said. “Cinemas, on the big screen with the big sound and that shared experience makes a big star, or show the talent of a big star anyway.”

The first “ Dune ” opened under complicated conditions in October 2021. It was one of the last films of Warner Bros.’ divisive plan to simultaneously debut its major movies in theaters and on its streaming platform. And yet it still earned over $40 million in its first weekend and went on to gross over $400 million worldwide.

“Denis Villeneuve is up there with Christopher Nolan as a filmmaker whose name alone inspires people to go to the movie theater,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.

This weekend, he added, “moves the needle in a big way.”

Going into the weekend the box office was down about 20% from the same point last year (when “Avatar: The Way of Water,” a 2022 release, was lifting everything). The closest equivalent this year is “Wonka,” still a hit, but not as big as “Avatar 2.” After the “Dune” weekend, the deficit will be closer to 13%.

“It shows how important one movie can be to the overall health of the industry,” Dergarabedian said. “But this is not a one-hit wonder for March. It’s a momentum business. Now we’re going to get the wind back in the sails as we head further into March, April and the summer movie season.”

Warner Bros. is one of those studios that will be back in short order with another big film, in “Godzilla x Kong” at the end of March, followed by “Furiosa” in May, the “Beetlejuice” sequel in September and the “Joker” sequel in October.

“This is our year,” Goldstein said. “Exhibitors are fighting for their lives but we can be clever and collaborative with them to keep our business relevant to audiences.”

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “Dune: Part Two,” $81.5 million.

2. “Bob Marley: One Love,” $7.4 million.

3. “Ordinary Angels,” $3.9 million.

4. “Madame Web,” $3.2 million.

5. “The Chosen: Season 4, Episodes 7-8,” $3.2 million.

6. “Migration, $2.5 million.

7. “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Hashi,” $2.1 million.

8. “Wonka,” $1.7 million.

9. “Argylle,” $1.4 million.

10. “The Beekeeper,” $1.1 million.
