“This is not a reactive measure, it is a deliberate evolution to reduce complexity, raise the performance bar, and build a leaner, more agile SentinelOne,” CEO Tomer Weingarten told analysts on the earnings call Thursday.

Over the last few months, he said SentinelOne has restructured its teams and already seen “meaningful productivity” gains from ramped AI use.

In a securities filing, the company said it expects a one-time $25 million charge tied to the layoffs. The company had over 3,000 employees at the end of April.

Tech companies are increasingly slashing headcount as AI forces businesses to reallocate resources to keep pace with innovation. New AI tools are also allowing businesses to automate workloads.

Earlier this week, Israel-based web developer Wix slashed a fifth of its workforce due to AI and the strength of the Israeli shekel. Cisco downsized its headcount by nearly 5% earlier this month and Block roughly halved its workforce in February. Software firm Atlassian cut about 1,600 jobs in March.

SentinelOne’s workforce cuts also came alongside lackluster guidance for the current quarter and full year.

The company said it anticipates between $289 million and $291 million in revenue, versus the $292 million expected by LSEG analysts. SentinelOne reiterated its full-year outlook, expecting revenue between $1.195 billion and $1.205 billion. That came up short of a $1.21 billion forecast.

“Combined with growing criticalness of category, this should have been a Q where it sustained recent gains; lack of material guidance raise leaves in holding pattern,” wrote analysts at Morgan Stanley.

Cybersecurity companies are in the middle of a significant inflection, spurred by Anthropic’s Mythos model and the rise of autonomous AI agents that are capable of exploiting vulnerabilities faster than ever before. That’s forcing businesses to scale their security defenses and invest in newer tools.

At the same time, some cybersecurity stocks have sold off this year, getting swept up in broader market fears that new AI tools will displace software businesses.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned Tuesday that artificial intelligence has created a narrow window for the world’s tech firms, governments and banks to fix tens of thousands of software vulnerabilities found by his company’s latest model.

That AI model, Mythos, was previewed last month along with the disclosure that it had unearthed decades-old vulnerabilities in crucial software.

Since AI models from geopolitical adversary China are “maybe six to 12 months” behind the Anthropic product, there is “roughly that amount of time” to fix these issues, Amodei said.

The comments came during an Anthropic event in which Amodei shared the stage with JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and unveiled a new suite of agents meant to automate financial work.

“The danger is just some enormous increase in the amount of vulnerabilities, in the amount of breaches, in the financial damage that’s done from ransomware on schools, hospitals, not to mention banks,” Amodei said.

Anthropic has limited Mythos to a few partner companies because of concerns about what criminals or adversarial nations could do with it. The last several of the company’s model updates have reverberated through the markets, but Mythos has caused the most concern from corporations and policymakers alike.

The scale of potential cyber exploits has ballooned with each generation of Claude, Amodei said. An earlier Anthropic model found roughly 20 vulnerabilities in the Firefox browser. Mythos found nearly 300, and the total count across all software now runs into the tens of thousands, he said.

Most of the vulnerabilities found by Mythos haven’t been publicly disclosed because they remain unpatched, and “the bad guys will exploit” them if they are identified, Amodei said.

‘A better world’

Despite the alarm, both Amodei and Dimon also struck a note of conditional optimism.

“This is about a moment of danger where if we respond to it correctly, and I think we started to take the first steps, then we can have a better world on the other side,” Amodei said. “There are only so many bugs to find.”

Dimon also said that while the cyber fears were justified, the cybersecurity risks created by AI are a “transitory period.”

On the question of regulation, Amodei said that AI oversight should resemble what’s done in the automotive industry, striking a balance between consumer safety and allowing the industry to compete.

“You can’t just start a car company without ‘Are there brakes on this thing?'” he said. “We need to grope our way to some process that lets the industry operate expeditiously, is fair, but puts guardrails on the most serious things.”

The company’s event, and its setting with Dimon, the financial industry’s best-known spokesman, seemed to demonstrate Anthropic’s lead over OpenAI in the enterprise AI market as both companies head toward potential IPOs.

Anthropic announced on Tuesday an expansion of its financial services platform, including 10 new AI agents for investment banking and back-office work, as well as integration across Microsoft’s various Office programs. The company also said its latest widely available model — Claude Opus 4.7 — leads benchmarks for financial analysis tasks.

An Anthropic official previously told CNBC that it’s been in “ongoing discussions” with the U.S. government, including the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the Center for AI Standards and Innovation, about Claude Mythos Preview’s cyber capabilities.

Late last month, cyber stocks slumped after Fortune discovered a draft blog post from Anthropic, which revealed the model’s advanced cyber capabilities and possible risks.

“The dangers of getting this wrong are obvious, but if we get it right, there is a real opportunity to create a fundamentally more secure internet and world than we had before the advent of AI-powered cyber capabilities,” CEO Dario Amodei wrote in a post to X, accompanying Glasswing’s rollout.

Hackers have used Anthropic’s models in the past to orchestrate AI-fueled attacks.

In November, the company disclosed that a Chinese group used Claude to automate a hack on government and corporate targets.

Anthropic is currently fighting the Department of Defense over its recent labeling of the AI lab as a supply chain risk to national security. This week, a federal appeals court denied the company’s request to temporarily block the blacklisting.

A special discussion on implementing the Cabinet decision to connect critical government institutions to the National Cyber Security Operations Centre (NCSOC) was held on today (10) at the Old Parliament Building in Colombo.

Organized jointly by Sri Lanka CERT and the Ministry of Digital Economy, this session can be identified as a decisive step toward strengthening the country’s national cyber security framework, according to the President’s Media Division (PMD).

During the discussion, it was emphasized that cyber security in the modern world is no longer merely a technical concern, but a matter of national importance that directly affects national security, economic stability, and public trust.

Special focus was placed on connecting all government institutions that operate critical information infrastructure to the NCSOC, the statement said.

Policy-level decisions required for this initiative have already been approved through Cabinet decisions, and the second phase of the programme, connecting the remaining government institutions to the cyber security centre, is scheduled to be implemented by the end of this year.

Priority will be given to critical state institutions, which are also expected to undergo audits conducted through the National Audit Office.

In addition, the session highlighted the importance of properly implementing awareness and training programmes on digital security for all public sector officials.

It was further noted that as Sri Lanka progresses toward a digital economy, cyber resilience must be regarded as a fundamental component of governance and effective public service delivery, PMD said.

The new mechanism is expected to play a key role in preventing and managing disruptions to essential services arising from cyber threats such as defacement of government websites, ransomware attacks, and data breaches.

Through the NCSOC, government institutions will benefit from real-time threat monitoring, early warning systems, and coordinated incident response capabilities.

Accordingly, the initiative was described not simply as a compliance exercise, but as an investment in institutional credibility and long-term resilience, it added.

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eng. Eranga Weeraratne, Acting Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy Waruna Sri Dhanapala, officials from the Presidential Secretariat, Chairman of Sri Lanka CERT Tilak Pathirage, Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka CERT Dr. Kanishka Karunasekera, along with several other officials.

A number of heads and senior officials from government institutions identified as operating critical information infrastructure also participated in the discussion.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) slipped to a consolidated net loss in the December quarter from a year-earlier profit, hit by the continued fallout of a cyberattack at its British luxury car unit Jaguar Land Rover and a challenging global demand environment.

The Mumbai-based automaker posted a net loss of ₹3,486 crore in the three months ended December 31, compared with a net profit of ₹5,406 crore a year earlier. JLR accounted for nearly two-thirds of the consolidated revenue.

Revenue from operations declined 26% to ₹70,108 crore from ₹94,472 crore, reflecting lower volumes and production disruptions at JLR.

Earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) turned negative at ₹3,300 crore, down Rs11000 crore in the corresponding period last year.

The December quarter continued to be impacted by the cyber incident at JLR, which disrupted manufacturing and global vehicle distribution, after a similar impact in the preceding quarter. The cyberattack caused an estimated cash outflow of around £1.5 billion, with the impact on earnings at more than £300 million. JLR volumes were affected by an estimated 30,000 vehicles in the December quarter, said the company executives told reporters in a post earnings call.

Richard Molyneux, chief financial officer of JLR, said the business also faced weakness in key markets such as China and the US, rising customer acquisition costs, and intense competition. “While operations have now returned to normal, the cyber incident and softer global demand continued to weigh on performance in Q3,” he said, adding that JLR expects a significant improvement in the fiscal fourth quarter, with no exceptional items anticipated.

In contrast, Tata Motors’ domestic passenger vehicle business delivered a sequential recovery, aided by higher volumes and incentives, though this was insufficient to offset the drag from JLR.Shailesh Chandra, managing director and CEO at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, said demand conditions in India remain healthy. “Products like Punch continue to perform strongly, and Sierra is expected to reinvigorate demand as production ramps up,” he said.

Dhiman Gupta, chief financial officer, said commodity prices remain under pressure, impacting around 2% of revenue, but added that cost discipline and volume recovery should support margins. “Despite the near-term challenges, the company has maintained its full-year guidance,” he said.

Tata Motors expects domestic demand to remain resilient and JLR’s performance to recover as cyber-related disruptions fade, even as global market conditions remain uncertain.

Shares of Tata Motors closed 0.33% lower at Rs374.15 apiece on the BSE, almost in line with a 0.6% decline in the benchmark Sensex. The earnings were reported after market hours.

A survey released Friday by corporate insurer Axis Capital shows there’s a growing divide across the C-suite on how executives view the risks, rewards and impact of cutting-edge AI technology.

On one hand, artificial intelligence is rapidly improving cybersecurity defense technologies, but AI is also equipping cybercriminals with sophisticated tools and creating new risks.

“When you think about AI, it is not merely a cyber challenge. This technology presents unique burdens, liabilities, challenges and opportunities to CEOs and boards alike,” Axis CEO Vincent Tizzio told CNBC in an exclusive interview.

Axis surveyed 250 CEOs and chief information security officers across the U.S. and U.K. on how AI is reshaping the cyber risk landscape. The survey found that while CEOs tend to view AI as a driver of productivity and competitive advantage, CISOs tend to see the technology as a source of increased exposure to risks like data leaks.

Asked how confident they were that AI would strengthen their companies’ cybersecurity, 19.5% of CEOs said they weren’t confident compared to 30% of CISOs saying they lacked that confidence.

“The rapidity of change that’s going on in AI renders reconsideration of the purchases that they’re making and taking around the tools that they’re bringing to the company,” Tizzio said.

The study also found that AI is generally viewed positively among both U.S. and U.K. executives, although U.K. respondents expressed more caution than those in the U.S.

While 85% of U.S. leaders said they felt prepared for AI threats, only 44% in the U.K. said they felt prepared.

Cybersecurity is a major investment priority for executives as ransomware attacks have nearly doubled over the past two years, with 82% of respondents saying they plan to increase their cybersecurity budgets over the next 12 months.

“I haven’t met a fellow CEO or board member that doesn’t talk about the critical importance of discussing cyber as an exposure to the company’s well-being,” Tizzio said.

Here are five key things investors need to know to start the trading day:

1. Pump the breaks

The stock market’s recovery rally grinded to a halt yesterday. The culprit: A slide in cryptocurrencies, which put a damper on risk-on investing.

Here’s what to know:

The three major indexes all broke five-day win streaks. Small-cap stocks also felt the pullback, with the Russell 2000 sliding more than 1%.

Investor sentiment was soiled by a sell-off in crypto assets. Bitcoin fell 6% for its worst day since March.

Crypto-related stocks and some artificial intelligence plays also dropped in the session, signaling that animal spirits were spooked.

But retail stocks bucked the downtrend, with the State Street SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) pushing its one-week gain above 6% as the holiday shopping season kicks into full swing.

President Donald Trump has said he knows who he will nominate to be the next Federal Reserve chair, but the public will have to wait. Even so, people seem to be coming to the same conclusion: National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett.

Across the board, prediction markets are placing a high likelihood that Hassett will succeed Jerome Powell in the role. Hassett told Fox News this weekend that he’d “be happy to serve” if asked.

As CNBC’s Jeff Cox writes, the central bank’s next chair will enter the role at a pivotal time for the U.S. economy. They will also have to navigate a Fed that is currently divided on the direction of monetary policy.

The wholesaler filed a lawsuit last week asking for a full refund of the new tariffs it has paid this year. The suit also seeks to block those levies from being collected as the Supreme Court weighs the tariffs’ legality.

Dozens of other companies have filed similar lawsuits in hopes of securing refunds if the Supreme Court rules against Trump’s tariffs. Even if the court finds the duties are illegal, Costco warned in its suit that it may not be able to get paid back later, pointing to a Dec. 15 deadline that could prevent refunds of any duties it’s already paid.

Markets regulator Sebi on Thursday clarified that the cybersecurity and cyber resilience framework (CSCRF) applies only to systems used exclusively for its regulated activities.

Shared infrastructure will also be audited if not already covered by the RBI or another regulator.

Further, if regulated entities (REs) comply with RBI (or other regulator) cybersecurity rules that are equivalent to Sebi’s, such compliance will be accepted by the markets watchdog.

In its circular, Sebi also elaborated on the definition of critical systems, stating that it includes all systems that affect core operations, store or transmit regulatory data, client-facing applications, internet-facing systems, and other systems on the same network.

REs have been asked to adopt zero-trust principles such as network segmentation, high availability, and avoiding single points of failure with approval from their IT Committees.

The regulator said that guidelines relating to mobile applications are recommendatory, not mandatory, while for cyber crisis response, entities must act as per their Cyber Crisis Management Plan instead of issuing press releases. The regulator further clarified that deploying tools like threat simulations, vulnerability management, and decoy systems is encouraged but not compulsory. Entities are also required to assess third-party/vendor risks in consultation with their IT Committees.

On audit-related matters, Sebi said, “While receiving and handling cyber audit reports submitted by their members, stock exchanges and depositories shall ensure that adequate safeguards are in place to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of such reports”.

In terms of disaster recovery, REs must be capable of resuming critical operations within two hours (RTO), maintain a 15-minute Recovery Point Objective (RPO), and plan for scenarios where timelines are not met, Sebi said.

The regulator has also revised the thresholds and categorisation of regulated entities under the CSCRF. For Portfolio Managers, those with Assets Under Management (AUM) of Rs 10,000 crore and above will be categorised as Qualified REs, while those managing between Rs 3,000 crore and Rs 10,000 crore will fall under the Mid-size RE category.

Portfolio managers with AUM of Rs 3,000 crore or below will be treated as Small-size REs, and those below the minimum threshold may be classified as Self-certification REs with simplified compliance requirements.

For Merchant Bankers (MBs), all active MB– those undertaking merchant banking activities during the relevant period–will be classified as Small-size REs for compliance purposes, while inactive MBs will be exempt from CSCRF provisions.

All are from California and most are between 18 and 22 years old.

Online Games To Real-World Theft

Based on reports, this ring started as a group of friends playing online video games in October 2023. They then moved on to hacking databases and making cold calls to trick crypto holders into handing over access.

According to investigators, Lam even hacked a victim’s iCloud to track their movements, and a partner nicknamed “The Accountant” or “Goth Ferrrari” would break into homes to steal hardware wallets.

Bitcoin & Money Laundering Network Exposed

The DOJ says the stolen proceeds—more than $230 million from a single incident on August 18, 2024—were run through VPNs, crypto mixers and peel‑chain tactics.

A peel chain works by shifting funds through many wallets and peeling off small amounts each time. Those steps made it harder for law enforcement to trace the money, officials noted.

Lavish Spending On Stolen Funds

Based on reports, the suspects blew the gains on high‑end nightlife, exotic cars and luxury goods. They spent as much as $500,000 in one night at clubs.

They rented 28 exotic cars—some valued at $3.8 million each—and bought designer bags, watches and clothes. Fake IDs were used to rent homes and private jets, all paid for with the stolen Bitcoin.

This case illustrates how rapidly tech‑savvy youngsters can become criminals. It indicates that hardware wallets require good physical security and that digital accounts must employ multi‑factor authentication more than SMS.

Crypto owners must be cautious against uninitiated support calls and employ services that lock down iCloud and email accounts.

Next Steps In The Prosecution

All defendants are charged under RICO and face counts of wire fraud and money laundering. Court records show they could get decades in prison if convicted.

The DOJ says this superseding indictment sends a clear message: no matter how complex the scheme, law enforcement can break it apart.

Tough new European Union regulations requiring banks to bolster their cybersecurity systems officially come into effect Friday — but many of the bloc’s financial services firms aren’t yet in full compliance with the rules.

The EU’s Digital Operational Resilience Act, or DORA, requires both financial services firms and their technology suppliers to strengthen their IT systems to ensure the industry is resilient in the event of a cyberattack or any other forms of disruption. It entered into effect on Jan. 17.

The penalties for breaches of the new legislation can be substantial. Financial services firms that fall foul of the new rules can face fines of up to 2% of annual global revenue. Individual managers could also be held liable for breaches and face sanctions of as much as 1 million euros ($1 million).

So far, the rate of compliance among financial services firms with the new rules has been mixed, according to Harvey Jang, chief privacy officer and deputy general counsel at IT giant Cisco.

“I think we’ve seen a mixed bag,” Jang told CNBC in an interview. “Of course, the more mature-stage companies are further along looking at this for at least a year — if not longer.”

“We’re really trying to build this compliance program, but it’s so complex. I think that’s the challenge. We saw this too with GDPR and other broad legislation that is subject to interpretation — what does it actually mean to comply? It means different things to different people,” he said.

This lack of a common understanding of what qualifies as robust compliance with DORA has in turn led many institutions to ramp up security standards to the level that they’re actually surpassing the “baseline” of what’s expected of most firms, Jang added.

Are financial institutions ready?

Under DORA, financial firms will be required to undertake rigorous IT risk and incident management, classification and reporting, operational resilience testing, intelligence sharing on cyber threats and vulnerabilities, and measures to manage third-party risks.

Firms will be also be required to conduct assessments of “concentration risk” related to the outsourcing of critical or important operational functions to external companies.

A Censuswide survey of 200 U.K. chief information security officers commissioned by Orange Cyberdefense, the cybersecurity division of French telecoms firm Orange, showed that 43% of financial institutions in Britain aren’t yet in full compliance with DORA.

That’s a concern because, even though the U.K. falls outside the European Union now, DORA applies to all financial entities operating within EU jurisdictions — even if they’re based outside the bloc.

“Whilst it is clear that DORA has no legal reach in the U.K., entities based here and operating or providing services to entities in the EU will be subject to the regulation,” Richard Lindsay, principal advisory consultant at Orange Cyberdefense, told CNBC.

He added that the main challenge for many financial institutions when it comes to achieving DORA compliance has been managing their critical third-party IT providers.

“Financial institutions operate within a multi-layered and hugely complex digital ecosystem,” Lindsay said. “Tracking and ensuring that all parts of this system evidentially comply with the relevant elements of DORA will require a new mindset, solutions and resources.”

Banks are also adding higher levels of scrutiny in their contract negotiations with tech suppliers due to DORA’s strict requirements, Jang said.

The Cisco chief privacy officer told CNBC that he thinks there is alignment when it comes to the principles and the spirit of the law. However, he added, “any legislation is a product of compromise and so, as they get more prescriptive, then it becomes challenging.”

“The principles we agree with, but any legislation is a product of compromise, and so as as they get more prescriptive, then it becomes challenging.”

Still, despite the challenges, the broad expectation among experts is that it won’t be long until banks and other financial institutions achieve compliance.

“Banks in Europe already comply with significant regulations which cover the majority of the areas that fall under DORA,” Fabio Colombo, EMEA financial services security lead at Accenture, told CNBC.

“As a result, financial services institutions already have mature governance and compliance capabilities in place, with existing incident reporting processes and solid ICT risk frameworks.”

Risks for IT suppliers

IT providers can also be fined under DORA. The rules threaten levies of as much as 1% of average daily worldwide revenue for up to six months.

“These sanctions are necessary,” Brian Fox, chief technology officer of software supply chain management firm Sonatype, told CNBC. “They are a powerful motivator, pushing leaders to take compliance and operational resilience more seriously than ever.”

Orange Cyberdefense’s Lindsay said there’s a risk longer term that financial services firms end up moving their critical security functions and services in-house.

“Advances in technology may allow financial institutions to move services back in-house, simplifying this aspect and reducing the risk of non-compliance,” he said.

“Either way, existing contracts will need to be updated to ensure compliance is contractually mandated and monitored between entity and provider,” Lindsay added.

Meanwhile, there are several other cybersecurity-focused regulations that organizations will have to come to terms, such as the Network and Information Security Directive 2, or NIS 2, and the Cyber Resilient Act. The former entered into force in October.

“As with any new regulation, there will certainly be a transitionary period as organisations adjust to new requirements and standards,” Sonatype’s Fox told CNBC. “This is the start of a long journey toward improving software security and resilience.”
