Among the live sports and entertainment shows that carried media companies’ presentations to advertisers this week, another pitch kept popping up: creator content.

The category of videos, which can amass millions of views on Google’s YouTube and other social media platforms, is increasingly sharing the stage with traditional Hollywood offerings during the annual presentations known as “upfronts.”

Creator content is already taking a big share of advertiser dollars. In 2025, advertiser spending on the genre reached $37 billion, according to a recent report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau. This year, it’s expected to reach $44 billion, the report found.

“They are this generation’s storytellers, tastemakers and stars, producing the most relevant and engaging programming on the planet,” said Brian Albert, managing director of YouTube Solutions. “And advertisers have recognized that they don’t just have large audiences, they have communities that trust them. It’s why they want to partner with them now, more so than ever.”

The shift to streaming over traditional TV has led sports, especially the NFL, as well as live events to beckon the highest ad rates — especially when media companies are paying hefty premiums for the live rights.

With streaming, however, advertisers get more bang for their buck, industry executives have told CNBC. That’s true whether it’s a simulcast sporting event on streaming platforms or the exclusive rights to video podcasts or children’s programs like “Ms. Rachel.”

Those economics — combined with the need to capture elusive, younger audiences — are spurring demand for ad-supported inventory, and opening the door to more creator-led content on traditional platforms.

YouTube claims the biggest share of streaming viewership, per Nielsen‘s monthly reports known as “The Gauge.” As of February, the platform accounted for 12.7% of streaming viewership, with Netflix coming in second at 8.4%.

The company hosted its pitch to advertisers — what it calls its Brandcast — on Wednesday, featuring personalities like YouTuber Jesse “Jesser” Riedel, comedian Trevor Noah and podcast host Alex Cooper.

“Where there used to be a distinct difference between studio-led content and creator content, it’s merging into a singular view,” said Julie Clark, longtime ad industry executive and senior vice president of media and entertainment at TransUnion.

“If you look at the rise of things like long-form video podcasts, to quick-hitting tutorials, there is an understanding that the content landscape has shifted dramatically,” she added. “This is absolutely changing how upfronts are contemplated and activated.”

Legacy media creators

Last year, it was video podcasts making their way to more upfront stages — an early indicator that viral online content was joining the traditional fray.

“The landscape has changed so much over the past year. Podcasting is now pretty 360, meaning you get some of your content watching long-form on video platforms, and then a lot of people are starting to consume more short and mid-form on social platforms,” said Angie More, head of creator advertising partnerships at Amazon.

“We’re seeing creators want to take advantage of reaching their audiences everywhere,” More said.

Amazon’s Prime Video once again highlighted a major video podcast deal at its presentation this week. Oprah Winfrey took the stage to promote her recent multiyear deal with the company to distribute “The Oprah Podcast” on both audio and video. The deal also includes the rights to a library of her past content.

For companies like Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery, which have long histories of studio-made content, they’ve begun to lean into creator content through personalities that are already mainstays on their platforms — particularly those in unscripted food and home improvement shows.

WBD has been working with creators and influencers for years, said Karen Bronzo, chief global marketing officer for U.S. networks and news at WBD, in an interview.

Bronzo noted that this sort of programming has become a bigger part of the conversation for media companies and advertisers. She said working with online personalities allows traditional networks to expand their reach — and allows marketers to tap into expansive fanbases, which are often paying close attention to their favorite personalities and brands.

“When you’re experiencing the content from a creator, you do feel it is personal. It is a much more, sort of, one-to-one relationship and a different kind of connection,” said Bronzo.

During WBD’s upfront presentation on Wednesday, Bronzo said the company’s lineup for The Food Network is further expanding into YouTube originals, with a new series featuring chef Esther Choi coming to the network’s social media channel. Besides The Food Network, HGTV home improvement series and the “Puppy Bowl” — the annual Super Bowl-adjacent dog show — have been ripe for generating such content.

Fox has similarly found an entry point into the creator ecosystem via food. Earlier this year, the company launched Fox Creator Studios, with a focus on food content. The effort is led by chefs already on the Fox roster, including Gordon Ramsay.

Ramsay took the stage of Fox’s upfront pitch on Monday, alongside NFL legend Tom Brady and stars of network entertainment shows, to tout his series on Fox and the Creator Studios.

Fox has focused much of it streaming effort on its free, ad-supported service, Tubi, which has been inking agreements with YouTube personalities to create content specifically for the streamer. In turn, those creators are bringing their followings over from the social media platform.

In particular, Tubi has attracted the Gen Z audience, a key demographic for advertisers looking to reach younger consumers who don’t tune into traditional media outlets as often. The Fox-owned streamer also launched Tubi for Creators, and has been looking to provide creators a pathway to Hollywood, CNBC previously reported.

Tubi hosted its own presentation for advertisers in late March, ushering creators onto the stage, including YouTube’s Jesser.

The platform has since announced various creator-led partnerships, including an exclusive soccer-focused series led by Jesser that premiered on Friday.

They say journalists never truly clock out. But for Christian, that’s not just a metaphor, it’s a lifestyle. By day, he navigates the ever-shifting tides of the cryptocurrency market, wielding words like a seasoned editor and crafting articles that decipher the jargon for the masses. When the PC goes on hibernate mode, however, his pursuits take a more mechanical (and sometimes philosophical) turn.

Christian’s journey with the written word began long before the age of Bitcoin. In the hallowed halls of academia, he honed his craft as a feature writer for his college paper. This early love for storytelling paved the way for a successful stint as an editor at a data engineering firm, where his first-month essay win funded a months-long supply of doggie and kitty treats – a testament to his dedication to his furry companions (more on that later).

Christian then roamed the world of journalism, working at newspapers in Canada and even South Korea. He finally settled down at a local news giant in his hometown in the Philippines for a decade, becoming a total news junkie. But then, something new caught his eye: cryptocurrency. It was like a treasure hunt mixed with storytelling – right up his alley!

So, he landed a killer gig at NewsBTC, where he’s one of the go-to guys for all things crypto. He breaks down this confusing stuff into bite-sized pieces, making it easy for anyone to understand (he salutes his management team for teaching him this skill).

Think Christian’s all work and no play? Not a chance! When he’s not at his computer, you’ll find him indulging his passion for motorbikes. A true gearhead, Christian loves tinkering with his bike and savoring the joy of the open road on his 320-cc Yamaha R3. Once a speed demon who hit 120mph (a feat he vowed never to repeat), he now prefers leisurely rides along the coast, enjoying the wind in his thinning hair.

Speaking of chill, Christian’s got a crew of furry friends waiting for him at home. Two cats and a dog. He swears cats are way smarter than dogs (sorry, Grizzly), but he adores them all anyway. Apparently, watching his pets just chillin’ helps him analyze and write meticulously formatted articles even better.

Here’s the thing about this guy: He works a lot, but he keeps himself fueled by enough coffee to make it through the day – and some seriously delicious (Filipino) food. He says a delectable meal is the secret ingredient to a killer article. And after a long day of crypto crusading, he unwinds with some rum (mixed with milk) while watching slapstick movies.

Looking ahead, Christian sees a bright future with NewsBTC. He says he sees himself privileged to be part of an awesome organization, sharing his expertise and passion with a community he values, and fellow editors – and bosses – he deeply respects.

So, the next time you tread into the world of cryptocurrency, remember the man behind the words – the crypto crusader, the grease monkey, and the feline philosopher, all rolled into one.

Sora, which was launched on Tuesday, allows users to create short-form AI videos and share them in a feed. The app is available to iPhone users but requires an invite code to access.

Here’s how to snag a Sora app invite code:

First, download the app from the iOS App Store. Note that Sora requires iOS 18.0 or later to be downloaded.

Login using your OpenAI account.

Click “Notify me when access opens.”

A screen will then appear asking for an access code.

Currently, OpenAI has said that it is prioritizing paying ChatGPT Pro users for Sora access. The app is only available in the U.S. and Canada, but is expected to roll out to additional countries soon, the company said.

If you do not know someone who can provide an access code, several people are sharing invite codes on the official OpenAI Discord server, as well as on X and Reddit threads.

Once you input your access, you will be able to start generating AI videos using text or images. Users are also able to cameo as characters in their videos as well as “remix” other posts.

The app is powered by the new Sora 2.0 model, an updated version of the original Sora model from last year. The video generation model is “physically accurate, realistic, and more controllable” than prior systems, the company said in a blog post.

Two Adani group companies — Adani Green and Adani Enterprises — proved to be one of the most consistent and fastest wealth creators among India’s top 100 companies over the last five years. This comes even after two major setbacks in the form of Hindenburg and bribery allegations in the past two years.

According to a study on annual wealth creation by Motilal Oswal, Adani Green emerged as the fastest wealth creator with a 2019-24 price CAGR of 118%. Two more Adani companies have made it to the list of top 10 fastest wealth creators — Adani Enterprises and Adani Power.

In 2019, there were 2,852 mini-companies (i.e. ranked beyond 250). Of these, only Adani Green moved to the mega category by 2024.

Adani Green Energy is India’s leading renewable energy solutions partner, which develops, owns, and operates utility-scale grid-connected solar, wind and hybrid renewable power plants.

The other fastest wealth creators over this five-year period include Dixon Technologies, Linde India, Varun Beverages.

Also Read: Sleeping giant HDFC Bank shares wake up with Rs 3 lakh crore rallyAn investment of Rs 10 lakh in these top 10 fastest wealth creators in 2019 would be worth Rs 1.75 crore in 2024, a return CAGR of 77%. This compares with just 14% return CAGR for Nifty 50.The strong performance of Adani Green along with Adani Power and Adani Energy Solutions lifted the overall return profile of the utilities stocks, typically considered a laggard sector. Utilities overall emerged as the third largest wealth -creating sector.

According to the report, nine of the top 10 fastest wealth creators have seen massive P/E re-rating. Further, 5 of the top 10 had P/E in excess of 100x.

“Though partly justified by robust earnings growth, this is still a case of too much money chasing too few stocks. The current P/E of Nifty Midcap 100 is 44x whereas that of the Nifty Small Cap 100 is 36x. This clearly merits caution,” it said.

Adani Group’s flagship company Adani Enterprises emerged as the best all-round wealth creator in Motilal Oswal’s wealth creation study.

The report defines all-round wealth creators based on the summation of ranks, under each of the three categories – biggest, fastest and consistent. Where the scores are tied, the stock price CAGR decides the all-round rank. Based on this criteria, Adani Enterprises has emerged as the clear winner.

Elon Musk’s chances of winning his second lawsuit against OpenAI look grim, but in law nothing is entirely hopeless.

The entrepreneur has claimed the nonprofit he helped found cannot legally convert to a corporation without violating the very purpose for which it was created nine years ago—to benefit humanity as a whole by developing the world’s first artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Musk is seeking to force his former creation to compensate him for treble the $44.6 million he donated over five years and compel it to open-source all the research findings behind its neural network GPT-4.

The latter coincidentally would also serve the interests of his own xAI research lab, a direct competitor to OpenAI.

Yet U.S. law isn’t kind to private litigants like Musk seeking redress against charitable nonprofits to which they have made tax-deductible donations. Attempts made after the fact to demand money back or insist funds be used differently are typically doomed.

“All those cases fail,” Brian Quinn, a professor of corporate law at Boston College Law School, tells Fortune. “There’s very little legal basis for those kinds of claims. Once the money is handed over, that’s it.”

Throwing legal spaghetti at the wall

While nonprofits need to be mindful of how they treat donors if they want the checks to keep flowing, they have no shareholders with an economic interest that can be damaged.

Legally speaking, the responsibility to litigate on behalf of the public falls to the authorities—typically the attorney general of a state.

“If you donate to a charity, you don’t have a lot of recourse to later sue. U.S. law is not very favorable to donors in that regard,” Luís Calderón Gómez, a tax law specialist and assistant professor at Yeshiva University’s Cardozo Law School, tells Fortune.

He believes Musk’s chances may improve now that his team has shifted its legal strategy, increasing the number of alleged offenses to 14 from just four—even if the crux of the matter hasn’t changed.

Accusing OpenAI of everything from fraud and racketeering to false advertising and unjust enrichment may look like the legal equivalent of throwing spaghetti at a wall, hoping one of the charges somehow sticks.

Yet Calderón Gómez believes his case isn’t entirely without merit, given that courts may not look kindly on OpenAI’s brazen shedding of its nonprofit shell.

Musk has alleged the existence of a “Founding Agreement”, arranged with CEO Sam Altman, that expressly prohibits this eventuality. He has, however, failed to produce it, arguing instead it was reflected in the nonprofit’s December 2015 Certificate of Incorporation sufficiently to prove his point.

OpenAI moves to dismiss Musk lawsuit

“If he had that [Founding Agreement], he’d have a very strong case,” says Calderón Gómez. He believes Musk would be better off framing his dealings less as a donor and more as a co-founder who signed a binding document.

The burden of proof, however, lies with Musk—and demonstrating that OpenAI had planned to defraud him at the time of its founding will be challenging in the absence of clear evidence.

Listing no less than 82 separate legal precedents to back up its argument, lawyers for Altman’s company argued on Wednesday that Musk didn’t have a leg on which to stand.

“What’s new is that the carcass of the ‘Founding Agreement’ (now lowercased and shunted to the back of the complaint) is larded with allegations of fraud, racketeering, and false advertising,” OpenAI’s lawyers wrote dismissively. “But Musk offers neither the factual nor the legal scaffolding needed to sustain his claims.”

OpenAI’s legal team moved this week to dismiss the lawsuit outright, claiming Musk’s second attempt to drag the ChatGPT creator to court was just dressed up in even more hysterical language to deflect from its lack of substance.

Musk’s legal team at Toberoff & Associates didn’t respond to a request from Fortune for comment.

OpenAI among most valuable privately held companies

OpenAI has been increasingly candid about its plans to become a normal for-profit corporation, telling staff this will likely happen sometime next year.

At present, the company has no profits to distribute, and in fact, it continues to lose money due to the exorbitant costs of training and refining its models—by last account, $5 billion in red ink is expected for this year.

Moreover, a string of high-profile exits have occurred over the past six months, leaving CEO Sam Altman as one of only three founding team members left.

That hasn’t stopped investors from falling over themselves to buy shares in its operating company, which is titularly controlled by the nonprofit. Despite profits being capped, the equity it just raised valued it at $157 billion, making OpenAI one of the most valuable privately owned companies in the world.

Musk turns against his own creation

Musk, who left the board in 2018 and stopped donating entirely two years later, has meanwhile been forced to watch the success from the sidelines—a success he no longer could claim as his own.

Initially he still seemed like the proud parent. Days after ChatGPT launched at the end of 2022, he used his social media platform to draw attention to the invention and even chastised the New York Times twice for failing to cover it.

In the subsequent months, however, his tone changed dramatically as OpenAI grabbed headlines and triggered an explosion of interest in AI.

After it was clear ChatGPT would soon become the fastest-growing app in history, Musk began to speak out publicly against Altman’s research outfit, saying it had become the exact opposite of what he intended.

By May of 2023, it was clear he had an ax to grind.

‘I am the reason OpenAI exists’

That month, Musk told CNBC he had effectively wound up donating to a charity “to save the Amazon rainforest, and instead they became a lumber company, and chopped down the forest and sold it for money.”

At the time Musk was frustrated investors weren’t rewarding Tesla’s stock price for its own AI endeavors. He felt viewers ought to know Tesla was also on the cusp of its own ChatGPT moment once his Teslas could drive themselves without human supervision, a feat he qualified as “baby AGI”.

Musk wasn’t about to let OpenAI take all the credit two years after it cashed his last donation. “I am the reason OpenAI exists,” he said in the interview. By then Musk had already revealed plans to launch his own ChatGPT competitor, xAI, an idea that would eventually become a reality that July.

Emails reveal Musk wanted to seize control

In February this year, Musk finally sued the company, claiming it had broken its word to remain a nonprofit.

Shortly thereafter, OpenAI produced evidence showing Musk was well aware of this likelihood in late 2017, supported it himself, and only broke with the organization after he was not allowed to run it as CEO or subsume it into Tesla.

“Elon wanted majority equity, initial board control, and to be CEO,” the company revealed, sharing emails exchanged at the time. “We couldn’t agree to terms on a for-profit with Elon, because we felt it was against the mission for any individual to have absolute control over OpenAI. He then suggested instead merging OpenAI into Tesla.”

Exactly one day before OpenAI’s scheduled hearing over its first motion to dismiss, the law firm Irell & Manella, which represented Musk at the time, informed California’s Superior Court that it was withdrawing the lawsuit—with no explanation given.

Musk filed a second lawsuit in August, but nothing that OpenAI has seen has since changed its mind. “Elon’s recycled complaint is without merit and his prior emails continue to speak for themselves,” OpenAI told Fortune in a statement.

Courts likely won’t indulge a legal fishing expedition

Boston College Law School’s Quinn argues the Amazon rainforest analogy doesn’t constitute fraud, so long as Altman wasn’t actively shopping for chainsaws at the time. Transforming into a logging company several years after Musk was already out the door may be a morally questionable decision, but it isn’t an illegal one.

Barring a minor miracle, Quinn expects Musk’s case to be thrown out at the first opportunity. Musk might refile again since he has an effectively infinite ability to keep funding lawsuits, but eventually, a judge would sanction him.

“If there is no factual basis for the allegations, the court is not going to open its doors to say ‘anyone who wants to sue anyone else, just come on down here, put some words on paper, we’ll place unnecessary costs on defendants just for you to engage in a fishing expedition to come up with some damaging stuff,” Quinn says. “Courts are for good reason generally unwilling to allow plaintiffs to bootstrap lawsuits.”

Potential California lawsuit seen as having better odds

Musk can, however, take heart in knowing that at least one consumer advocacy group shares his frustration, even if for reasons other than personal.

The nonpartisan, Washington, D.C.-based Public Citizen has filed a complaint against Altman’s company with California attorney general Rob Bonta over its for-profit transformation.

Co-president Robert Weissman wrote the state AG “should insist that an OpenAI conversion to for-profit status reserve for humanity the right to any OpenAI invention of ‘artificial general intelligence’.”
In addition, Public Citizen wants OpenAI to pay roughly equivalent the value extracted from the nonprofit and handed to shareholders—to endow a new independent foundation for AI safety.

That alone should cost the new for-profit tens of billions of dollars, it estimates, something that could serve as a consolation to Musk.

When reached by Fortune, Bonta’s office wouldn’t say whether this has resulted in any enforcement action. “To protect the integrity of our investigations, we’re unable to comment on, even to confirm or deny, a potential or ongoing investigation,” it said.

Yeshiva University’s Calderón Gómez believes a state-launched case would have a far better outlook for success than Musk’s private lawsuit.

“If I were in the California AG’s office, I would probably sue,” he says. “There’s enough facts here that make me believe this hasn’t been operated as a nonprofit for a while now.”

The U.S. Federal Reserve does not need to make an emergency rate cut, despite recent weaker-than-expected economic data, according to Claudia Sahm, chief economist at New Century Advisors.

Speaking to CNBC “Street Signs Asia,” Sahm said, “we don’t need an emergency cut, from what we know right now, I don’t think that there’s everything that will make that necessary.”

She said, however, there is a good case for a 50 basis point cut, adding that the Fed needs to “back off” its restrictive monetary policy.

While the Fed is intentionally putting downward pressure on the U.S. economy using interest rates, Sahm warned the central bank needs to be watchful and not wait too long before cutting rates, as interest rate changes take a long time to work through the economy.

“The best case is they start easing gradually, ahead of time. So what I talk about is the risk [of a recession], and I still feel very strongly that this risk is there,” she said.

Sahm was the economist who introduced the so-called Sahm Rule, which states that the initial phase of a recession has started when the three-month moving average of the U.S. unemployment rate is at least half a percentage point higher than the 12-month low.

Lower-than-expected manufacturing numbers, as well as higher-than-forecast unemployment fueled recession fears and sparked a rout in global markets early this week.

The U.S. employment rate stood at 4.3% in July, which crosses the 0.5 percentage point threshold. The indicator is widely recognized for its simplicity and ability to quickly reflect the onset of a recession, and has never failed to indicate a recession in cases stretching back to 1953.

When asked if the U.S. economy is in a recession, Sahm said no, although she added that there is “no guarantee” of where the economy will go next. Should further weakening occur, then it could be pushed into a recession.

“We need to see the labor market stabilize. We need to see growth level out. The weakening is a real problem, particularly if what July showed us holds up, that that pace worsens.”

Before Trump’s presidency ended in January 2021, he granted clemency to 143 individuals – pardoning 73, including Ripple board member Ken Kurson, and commuting the sentences of 70 others. He did not offer clemency to Ulbricht, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange or Edward Snowden, who released details about a U.S. surveillance program to American journalist Glenn Greenwald.

Reliance Industries Ltd was the biggest wealth creator during the five-year period from 2018 to 2023 while Adani Enterprises Ltd was the top all-round wealth creator, according to a study by Motilal Oswal Financial Services. The study, based on stock market performance of companies, said for the fifth time in succession, Reliance emerged as the largest wealth creator, adding Rs 9,63,800 crore wealth over 2018-23.

It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (Rs 6,77,400 crore wealth addition), ICICI Bank (Rs 4,15,500 crore), Infosys (Rs 3,61,800 crore) and Bharti Airtel (Rs 2,80,800 crore).

“A low-profile company, Lloyds Metals, has emerged the fastest wealth creator with 2018-23 price CAGR of 79 per cent,” it said. Adani Enterprises Ltd, the flagship incubator firm of the Adani Group, is a close second with a CAGR of 78 per cent.

It said Rs 10 lakh invested in 2018 in the top 10 fastest wealth creators would be worth Rs 1 crore in 2023, a return CAGR of 59 per cent.

Motilal said Capri Global is the most consistent wealth creator, outperforming the BSE Sensex in all the last five years with the highest price CAGR of 50 per cent.

Defining ‘all-round wealth creators’ as one which is the biggest, fastest and consistent stock market performer, the study said Adani Enterprises has emerged as the best all-round wealth creator. It is the 9th biggest wealth creator, second fastest and fifth most consistent.

It is followed by Varun Beverages, Adani Power, Tube Investments and ICICI Bank. Reliance is ranked at No.10 on this list. “During 2018-23, the top 100 wealth creators of India Inc created wealth of Rs 70.5 lakh crore, lower than (Rs 92.2 lakh crore in) the previous 5-year period 2017-22. Pace of wealth creation at 21 per cent CAGR is also lower than (28 per cent ) in the previous 5-year period, but well higher than the BSE Sensex return of 12 per cent,” the study said.

Reliance emerging as the largest wealth creator for the fifth time in succession has taken the company’s overall No.1 tally to 10 in the last 17 five-year study periods. TCS and Infosys continuously remain among the top 5 wealth creators.

“HDFC Bank does not feature in the top 10 list of wealth creators for the first time in several years,” the report said.

The technology sector has emerged as the largest wealth creating sector for the second year in a row, ahead of consumer and retail and financials. Technology has also gained a significant share of wealth creation – 20 per cent versus 9 per cent five years ago.

Like last year, the new kid on the block is chemicals/fertilizers with 3 per cent share. The biggest losers are rate sensitive financials and auto.

PSUs’ (public sector undertakings) wealth creation performance during 2018-23 is a significant improvement over the last two studies: 7 PSUs account for 6 per cent of wealth created.

“Two key factors have driven PSU wealth creation, turnaround by two banks (SBI and Bank of Maharashtra) and growth in the defense sector (Bharat Dynamics, Bharat Electronics and Hindustan Aeronautics),” it added.
