Latest Ethereum on-chain activity has given traders a clear reason to look at the sell side. A series of large ETH transfers tied to wallets linked with Galaxy Digital has raised questions about whether whales are actively dumping into the market.

Data from on-chain transaction tracker Lookonchain shows that two wallets linked to Galaxy Digital recently deposited 45,000 ETH across multiple crypto exchanges over a 15-hour window.

Ethereum Whales Move $104 Million In ETH To Exchanges

On-chain data shows that some Ethereum whale wallets are currently on a roll of transactions. These Ethereum whale wallets involved were flagged by Lookonchain as belonging to Galaxy Digital, the digital asset firm co-founded by Mike Novogratz.

The on-chain transfers flagged by Lookonchain show a clear pattern: large amounts of ETH moved from two whale wallets associated with Galaxy Digital-linked addresses into centralized crypto exchanges.

As shown in the screenshots shared from Arkham data, the transfers were routed to Binance, Bybit, and OKX deposits, with individual movements including 15,000 ETH, 17,000 ETH, 10,000 ETH, 8,500 ETH, 7,500 ETH, 4,250 ETH, and 3,250 ETH across different transactions. Taken together, these transfers totaled 45,000 ETH, worth around $104 million, and all were made within the space of 15 hours.

Are Whales Crashing ETH?

Exchange deposits are noteworthy because they often increase the chance of selling. The movement of ETH from self-custody into an exchange can be interpreted as a sign that Galaxy Digital may already be selling a notable portion of its holdings.

The Ethereum price has fallen by 2.8% and 2.3% in the past 24-hour and seven-day timeframes, respectively. At the time of writing, Ethereum is trading at $2,262.

The weakness is not limited to on-chain whale activity alone, as Spot Ethereum ETF inflows have also slowed down. SoSoValue data shows that Ethereum Spot ETFs recorded $87.7 million in net outflows on April 29, marking a third consecutive day of outflows. This was enough to flip the weekly flows to a negative $160 million.

However, the latest Ethereum weakness is not taking place in a one-sided whale dump. On-chain data shows that Ethereum is witnessing an equal amount of whale purchases that might be able to offset the selloffs.

For example, Lookonchain noted that Tom Lee’s BitMine bought another 20,000 ETH worth about $44.8 million on April 30, bringing its total purchases to 65,000 ETH worth roughly $147 million over the past 24 hours.

Other whale wallets are also showing signs of accumulation. Lookonchain reported that whale wallet 0xE5eB withdrew 4,361 ETH, worth about $9.98 million, from Kraken after three months of inactivity. Another newly created wallet, 0xA605, withdrew 2,000 ETH, worth about $4.58 million, from Binance.

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Bitcoin and the general cryptocurrency market have continued their struggles, as prices took a nosedive this weekend. On Friday, January 31, it seemed like the crypto market was gearing for another slow-action weekend as prices somewhat steadied after Thursday’s bloodbath.

However, the market has completely gone against the trend this weekend, with Bitcoin and the other large-cap digital assets falling by almost double digits on Saturday. Here is a look at the factors behind this steep decline and the immediate outlook for crypto prices.

Why Bitcoin And Crypto Prices Dropped This Weekend

Following Bitcoin’s initial descent to $81,000, different reasons, ranging from geopolitical tensions to the FOMC’s decision to keep the interest rates unchanged, swirled around. However, the continuous decline of prices, even during the typically sluggish weekend, suggests that other factors are at play.

In a new post on the social media platform X, prominent financial markets commentator The Kobeissi Letter weighed in on the possible reasons behind the market-wide downturn in recent days. According to the report, a look at the crypto flow data would shed more light on this market conundrum.

According to The Kobeissi Letter, the recent price decline witnessed by the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization is completely a liquidity situation. As shown in the highlighted chart, Bitcoin has witnessed three well-defined liquidation waves, summing up to over $1.3 billion over the past day.

Source: @KobeissiLetter on X

The financial markets commentator also mentioned that the crypto market liquidity has been choppy at best lately. However, sustained levels of extreme leverage in the Bitcoin market have caused the formation of “air pockets” in price.

The Kobeissi Letter added:

Couple this with herd-like sentiment, constantly shifting from extreme bullishness to extreme bearishness, and the swings become even more aggressive.

Unsurprisingly, the market-wide price correction saw the market hit with one of the largest liquidation events in crypto history. Market data shows that about $2.5 billion worth of levered longs have been liquidated in the digital asset market over the past 24 hours, the 10th-largest crypto liquidation event ever.

More notably, over $1 billion worth of levered long positions were forcibly closed within 5 minutes, as the Bitcoin price fell to around $76,000 on Saturday.

Total Crypto Market Cap Down By 7%

As of this writing, the total cryptocurrency market capitalization stands at around $2.725 trillion, reflecting a nearly 7% dip in the past 24 hours.

By late spring, Italy’s banking world was swept up in a storm of convoluted takeover bids and counterbids involving a swathe of the country’s major lenders. Three months later, only one high-profile bid is still standing.

It started with UniCredit‘s July decision to drop the “drag” of its nearly 15-billion-euro ($17.5-billion) bid for Banco BPM on the cusp of the proposal’s natural expiry, citing the opacity of conditions imposed by the Rome administration via its “golden power” screening rules. Then, Mediobanca‘s shareholders this month voted against the lender’s roughly 7-billion-euro offer for Banca Generali, thwarting what was widely seen as a defensive play against state-backed Monte dei Paschi‘s (MPS) interest in at least 35% of Mediobanca.

MPS has yet to give up.

Consolidation is one recourse for Europe’s cash-flush lenders to bulk up their scale and compete with Wall Street’s historically more lucrative banking giants. The M&A appetite has gripped Europe’s lenders at a time of markedly improved performance in the sector, with restructuring programs, the European defense boost, higher investment banking returns amid U.S. tariff-led volatility and an increase in broader M&A dealmaking in Southern Europe bolstering bottom lines.

In particular, the entangled web of offers from several of Italy’s key lenders — with pack leader Intesa Sanpaolo notably absent — builds on long-brewing momentum in what Fitch Ratings in April billed as a “more fragmented” banking system than in some other European nations.

“Increased scale could enable banks to better support large corporate investments, including those linked to European and Italian defence sector initiatives,” the agency said at the time.

Italy’s economy has been fertile ground for banking growth of late. It has “outperformed most of its Eurozone peers in recent years, although momentum may ease in coming years as an investment boom driven by [Next Generation EU] funds and construction spending fades away,” Deutsche Bank analysts said in an August report, stressing the country will need to pivot toward a more consumption-driven economy — facing the incoming pressures of higher U.S. tariffs.

The International Monetary Fund forecasts Italy — where it pronounced “further improvement in banking sector soundness” in a July report — will notch 0.5% economic growth this year, outpacing Germany’s projected 0.1% expansion over the same period.

M&A run still to go

While the pace of Italy’s consolidation attempts has simmered, analysts say we’re far from a denouement.

“Of late we have seen Banca BPER successful taking over Banca Sondrio, and Illimity Bank acquired by Banca Ifis. Meanwhile Monte dei Paschi is resolutely marching on Mediobanca, and Banco BPM’s independence might be short-lived, with Credit Agricole launching towards a 20% stake,” said Filippo Maria Alloatti, head of financials for credit at Federated Hermes Limited. “A merger between Credit Agricole Italy and Banco BPM seems likely in the medium-term.”

He added that the odds of MPS prevailing in its offer for Mediobanca are now higher — a view echoed by William Cain, head of M&A Research EMEA at Mergermarket, who told CNBC that “the vote on Banca Generali was effectively a referendum on Mediobanca’s standalone strategy and shareholders have now made their views clear on that point.”

He went on to say that, “There is an increasing chance BMPS will secure the 35% of Mediobanca’s share [that] capital management has previously said it would be happy with – and perhaps a lot more.”

Italy’s banks have also set sights beyond the country’s borders. UniCredit’s first play last year was to progressively accrue a synthetic stake of up to roughly 28% in German lender Commerzbank. The Italian bank has since converted this into a 26% equity shareholding in Commerzbank and has secured the European Central Bank’s blessing to hold up to 29.9% — stirring speculation over plans for a potential takeover, which Commerzbank and the Berlin administration have resisted.

The same UniCredit on Thursday said it has raised its holding in Greece’s Alpha Bank to nearly 26%, after engaging financial instruments for an additional 5% stake.

“What’s happening is not just an Italian story – Italy has become an important case study for the EU to test how M&A can evolve in the European banking sector,” Stefano Caselli, dean of the SDA Bocconi School of Management, told CNBC by email.

The consolidation fever has indeed spread beyond Italy. In July, Spain’s Banco Santander said it was buying British high street bank TSB for £2.65 billion from Sabadell. The Catalonian lender has itself been fighting off the advances of Spanish peer BBVA, which has decided to keep its takeover bid alive despite strict conditions from the Madrid government to clear the transaction.

The EU has challenged Spain over its intervention in the BBVA bid and has likewise found itself at odds with Rome over its use of the “golden powers” rules, which are typically invoked against transactions that threaten national security, in the UniCredit takeover. The European Commission has also posed questions over the Italian government’s November sale of a 15% stake in the bailed-out MPS, in which Rome retains a 11.73% shareholding. Italian Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has defended the “absolute correctness” of the stake exit, separately threatening to resign if he were overruled on the conditions Rome imposed on UniCredit, which included a timeline for the lender to halt its activities in Russia and a request to leave Banco BPM’s loan-to-deposit ratio unchanged for five years.

“The Italian Finance Ministry’s intervention was the final nail on the coffin for UniCredit’s 3rd takeover attempt at Banco BPM,” Alloatti pronounced.

In the case of the MPS bid, the SDA Bocconi School of Management’s Caselli argued that Rome “simply acted as a shareholder.”

“On the one hand, we expect the State to step in when a bank is in trouble. On the other hand, we want taxpayers not to lose money but ideally to see gains. At the same time, we want the State to play a neutral role,” Caselli said. “It’s difficult to achieve all of this at once.”

EU scrutiny

The EU, a proponent of lender consolidation, has launched the banking union supervision framework since the financial crisis, but is yet to complete the initiative.

“Hopes that the banking union would lead to closer integration of banking markets across Europe have not fully materialized,” Claudia Buch, chair of the supervisory board of the ECB, said in April. “Cross-border mergers have remained relatively rare, about 75% of banks’ lending portfolios are invested in their home markets, and few banks have truly European business models.”

Tie-ups have dwindled the number of EU banks since 2009, although roughly 4,752 were still operating in the European Union as of June, with 418 in Italy, according to Statista.

And the lack of blockbuster cross-border tie-ups is grinding some gears within the bloc.

“I feel frustrated because I continue to see domestic mergers with a domestic logic, not single-market mergers,” European Banking Authority Chairman Jose Manuel Campa told Politico earlier this week.

The euphoria surrounding India’s SME stocks has come crashing down, leaving behind a trail of losses, shattered valuations, and growing calls for regulatory introspection. Data shows that since the peak of the BSE SME IPO in early January, as many as 75% of the stocks have fell in double-digits.

This is almost a complete inversion of most of the frenzied gains seen in the last few years. Further, as many staggering 86% of listed SME stocks delivered negative returns to investors in the three month period from the peak.

From FOMO to fallout

What began as a dream run — with multibagger gains and oversubscription headlines dominating news — has turned into a sharp reality check for investors. Consider this: At least a quarter or 25% of stocks in the SME universe have fallen 30% or more.

The negative sentiments are also visible in the grey market, where premiums are almost wiped out now. The subscriptions for the IPOs are not exceeding 10x.

SME stocks have seen a correction recently due to several factors. But the broader market volatility and correction is one of the biggest factors. The Indian equity market has experienced a correction, with the Nifty50 down more than 14% from its September peak.

Live Events

This overall market volatility affected SME stocks significantly due to their inherent volatility and lack of institutional support. The stocks also had stretched valuations, which led to sharp corrections when market sentiment turned negative. The recent correction was also partly due to these valuations being unsustainable in a slowing economy.

SME stocks typically lack significant institutional backing, making them more susceptible to market downturns. Without strong institutional support, these stocks can experience rapid declines during corrections.

“Recently, the broader market has been impacted by global headwinds, stricter monetary policies, and widespread investor caution.

SMEs are particularly vulnerable to market corrections because of structural problems such inadequate liquidity, poor corporate governance and high operational risks,” said Rajesh Sinha, Sr Research Analyst at Bonanza Group.

The market has also become more disciplined as a result of recent changes that have raised the minimum application size to Rs 2 lakh,

mandated profitability requirements, and limited the offer-for-sale (OFS) to 20% of the issue.

By ensuring that only financially sound SMEs join the public market, these policies aim to increase investor trust over the long run.

Experts also say the sharp decline thus highlights the need for better risk management and increased transparency in this sector and is a result of a combination of macroeconomic forces and intrinsic flaws in the SME market.

However, the future looks bright for SMEs preparing for IPOs later in the year thanks to increased transparency and quality. “Market players anticipate that the SME IPO category would progressively regain its credibility and momentum with better corporate governance and due diligence, assisting entrepreneurs as well as the larger Indian startup ecosystem,” said Sinha.

Buffett, 94, didn’t single out any specific posts, but his conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway outright rejected all comments claimed to be made by him.

“There are reports currently circulating on social media (including Twitter, Facebook and Tik Tok) regarding comments allegedly made by Warren E. Buffett. All such reports are false,” the company said in a statement Friday.

CNBC’s Becky Quick spoke to Buffett Friday about this statement and he said he wanted to knock down misinformation in an age where false rumors can be blasted around instantaneously. Buffett told Quick that he won’t make any commentary related to the markets, the economy or tariffs between now and Berkshire’s annual meeting on May 3.

‘A tax on goods’

While Buffett hasn’t spoken about this week’s imposition of sweeping tariffs from the Trump administration, his view on such things has pretty much always been negative. Just in March, the Berkshire CEO and chairman called tariffs “an act of war, to some degree.”

“Over time, they are a tax on goods. I mean, the tooth fairy doesn’t pay ’em!” Buffett said in the news interview with a laugh. “And then what? You always have to ask that question in economics. You always say, ‘And then what?'”

During Trump’s first term, Buffett opined at length in 2018 and 2019 about the trade conflicts that erupted, warning that the Republican’s aggressive moves could cause negative consequences globally.

“If we actually have a trade war, it will be bad for the whole world … everything intersects in the world,” Buffett said in a CNBC interview in 2019. “A world that adjusts to something very close to free trade … more people will live better than in a world with significant tariffs and shifting tariffs over time.”

Buffett has been in a defensive mode over the past year as he rapidly dumped stocks and raised a record amount of cash exceeding $300 billion. His conglomerate has a big U.S. focus and has large businesses in insurance, railroads, manufacturing, energy and retail.

An American Airlines flight departing Hawaii was hastily ordered to make an “expedited climb” to avoid crashing into mountainous terrain on Wednesday.

Flight 298 had departed Honolulu, headed for Los Angeles International Airport, when an air traffic controller from Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport ordered the flight to “turn right and expedite your climb through terrain and then turn right,” according to broadcast audio from website LiveATC.

That order was made around 1 a.m. local time Wednesday.

The Federal Aviation Administration said that an air traffic controller instructed the flight to “perform an expedited climb after the crew did not make the assigned turn while departing from Honolulu International Airport.”

The FAA, which is investigating the incident, said the controller’s actions “ensured the aircraft remained safely above nearby terrain.”

American Airlines said: “During the climb out of Honolulu on November 13, the crew of American Airlines flight 298 requested and received right-turn clearance and complied with controller instructions.”

“There was no Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) alert as there were no issues with terrain clearance based on the trajectory of the aircraft,” the airline noted.

Ethereum has put on a disappointing performance for its investors over the last few weeks, leading to concerns on whether the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap has lost its shine. The cryptocurrency continues to skirt around the $3,100 level, not making any significant breaks upward. This points to weak fundamentals that could trigger a price decline.

Ethereum Fails To Make Meaningful Moves

Markus Thielen, Head of Research at 10x Research, has pointed out some worrying developments with the Ethereum price. In a new report shared with NewsBTC, he explains that despite Ethereum remaining highly correlated to Bitcoin with an R-Square of 95%, it continues to perform poorly while the latter has made new all-time highs.

Thielen points back to ETH’s performance in the last bull market, which was closely tied to new sectors popping out of the network, such as decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). This caused demand to skyrocket, and in turn, the price followed as users gobbled up ETH for the high gas fee required to transact on the blockchain.

However, Ethereum has failed to maintain this momentum, which can be attributed to its inability to bring the upgrades that users needed in time. Thielen explains that the Dencun upgrade which helped solved the high gas fee issues had come three years too late because by 2024 when the upgrade arrived, users had moved on to Layer 2 networks. Also, during this time, other Layer 1 networks have seen a rise in users and Solana is one example of this.

Source: 10x Research

The researcher further explained that the weak fundamentals of ETH are now not only affecting its price but has had a spillover effect to Bitcoin. “Ethereum’s weak fundamentals are becoming a roadblock for Bitcoin as they prevent broad fiat inflow into the crypto ecosystem,” Thielen stated.

Better To Short ETH

Thielen’s analysis of Ethereum also spreads to the drop in stablecoin usage on the network. Back in 2021, Ethereum had dominated stablecoin transactions such as USDT and USDC. However, it seems like, with other things, the high fees have driven users towards other networks. Blockchains such as Tron (TRX) are now dominating stablecoin transactions, leaving ETH in the dust.

Additionally, there is also the fact that ETH’s issuance is turning inflationary once again. After the London Hard Fork, also known as EIP-1559, was completed in 2021, the network saw its issuance turn deflationary for the first time as ETH burned quickly surpassed ETH being brought into circulation.

However, this has now changed in the past months as there have been more ETH issued than those burned, Thielen notes. To put this in perspective, a total of 74,000 ETH were issued compared to only 43,000 ETH burned. This inflation, coupled with the fact that staking rewards have now dropped to 3%, below the 5.1% offered by Treasury Yields, Ethereum has had a hard time maintaining bullish sentiment.

Given these developments, the researcher believes it is better to be bearish on Ethereum right now. “Right now, we would be more comfortable holding a short position in ETH than a long one in BTC as Ethereum’s fundamentals are fragile, which is not yet reflected in ETH prices,” Thielen concludes.

Max Keiser, the flamboyant advocate for Bitcoin, has once again taken center stage, directing his critique at Ripple’s XRP in a recent Twitter rant. Labeling XRP as “centralized garbage,” Keiser boldly predicted a plunge in its price to a mere one cent.

Unsurprisingly, Keiser’s followers, accustomed to his unwavering support for Bitcoin and skepticism towards alternative coins, nodded in agreement. Keiser perceives XRP’s centralized structure as a fundamental flaw, drawing sharp contrasts with the decentralized architecture of Bitcoin. He even went as far as insinuating ulterior motives, hinting that the creators of XRP might be involved in questionable activities.

Is Keiser Right About His Prediction?

However, is Keiser’s crystal ball truly clear? XRP did experience a recent dip, echoing a broader market correction triggered by Bitcoin’s post-ETF approval downturn. Despite the initial setback, XRP has displayed resilience, maintaining a position around $0.55. While significant liquidations did occur, their timing appears to align more with general market volatility rather than Keiser’s dramatic pronouncements.

Centralized garbage going to $0.01 pic.twitter.com/mDQ0PPBgWi

— Max Keiser (@maxkeiser) January 19, 2024

Even Keiser’s beloved Bitcoin has not emerged unscathed. Though not suffering the same dramatic fall as XRP, Bitcoin has seen a roughly 16% decrease since its peak post-ETF approval. Nevertheless, Keiser remains resolute in his prediction of a future $220,000 price for Bitcoin.

XRP is currently trading at $0.5515. Chart: TradingView.com

Financial analysts caution against taking Keiser’s predictions at face value. Known for his staunch Bitcoin-centric views, Keiser often oversimplifies the intricacies of other projects. XRP’s future is influenced by more than just allegations of centralization.

The ongoing legal battle with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding its security classification plays a pivotal role in shaping its trajectory. Technical and fundamental factors contribute to the complex valuation of XRP, challenging the simplicity of Keiser’s “garbage” label.

XRP price action in the last week. Source: Coingecko

Bitcoin And XRP: Diversification As A Strategy

So, does one need to follow Keiser’s fervent call and divest from XRP? Not necessarily. The realm of cryptocurrency investment is an unpredictable journey, and bold predictions, particularly from biased sources, demand a healthy dose of skepticism.

Instead, investors are encouraged to diversify their portfolios, conduct comprehensive research, and bear in mind that even the most vociferous Bitcoin advocates might miss the mark when it comes to the fortunes of alternative coins.
