The agreement, announced Monday, will play out over several years and create 1,000 jobs at Corning’s North Carolina factories, the companies said. Corning’s fiber optic cable and networking solutions are becoming essential elements of AI infrastructure because they enable fast connections between data centers and the racks and chips they house.

Shares of Corning popped 4% on Monday. Amazon stock was little changed.

“Amazon’s data centers power the services millions of people and businesses rely on every day,” the companies said in a press release. “Corning’s fiber optics are a critical piece of that infrastructure, and together, these investments help fuel the U.S. economic engine.”

The deal also expands a Corning training program for fiber optic technicians in North Carolina. Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman said in the press release that the company’s investments in the state have created over 26,000 jobs. Last year, Amazon committed to spend $10 billion on new data centers in North Carolina.

Fresh demand from AI is reinvigorating the 175-year-old Corning as hyperscalers and AI labs scramble to meet their exploding needs for computing power. Corning’s shares have more than doubled so far this year and are up almost sixfold since the end of 2023.

In May, Nvidia committed to investing up to $3.2 billion in Corning as part of a deal that involves the glass company building three new advanced manufacturing plants entirely devoted to the chipmaker. And in January, Meta said it would spend up to $6 billion as the flagship customer helping Corning build out its optical cable plant in Hickory, North Carolina, an expansion that’s expected to create around 1,000 jobs.

Corning is well known for making all the display glass for Apple‘s iPhone, but optical communications remains its largest and fastest-growing business. Since inventing optical fiber for long-range communication in 1970, Corning has provided millions of miles of cables to connect racks together in AI data centers from all the major players.

The Trump administration has called on Big Tech to onshore as many steps in the AI supply chain as possible, and Corning helps answer that need. The majority of Corning’s business happens overseas, which CEO Wendell Weeks told CNBC earlier this year isn’t changing. But he also said “next year the hyperscalers will be our biggest customers.”

“This agreement with Amazon represents a significant milestone for Corning and for American manufacturing,” Weeks said in Monday’s press release, adding it will “lead the way toward building a resilient U.S. manufacturing base.”

Photonics, the use of light to transmit data, is an emerging technology considered to be a more efficient alternative to the current process of transferring data using electricity. Electrical data transfer consumes more energy — a factor which is increasingly seen as a blocker to the broader deployment of AI.

Since the beginning of March, Nvidia has announced $2 billion investments into Lumentum, Coherent and Marvell, all of which are developing photonics tech. The chip giant also said it would invest $500 million into Corning to develop advanced optical connectivity solutions, and participated in optics startup Ayer Labs’ $500 million Series E funding round.

“Photonics represents a way for Nvidia to scale their AI infrastructure without the energy costs that staying with electrical and copper will incur,” Alvin Nguyen, senior analyst at Forrester, told CNBC.

“By investing in photonics companies, Nvidia is making sure that advancements in photonics continue and it will prevent them from hitting a scalability and performance wall that will occur if they remain on electrical and copper.”

Solving bottlenecks

Photonics can be used in AI infrastructure by using light to move data between graphics processing units (GPUs), memory, networking chips, servers and data centers, instead of relying only on electrical signals running along copper.

While copper is the main connectivity standard today because of its lower cost and high reliability, photonics will become more prominent in AI infrastructure over time, Brian Colello, senior equity analyst at Morningstar, told CNBC.

“Nvidia’s roadmap of next generation AI rack-scale solutions will require an increasing amount of optical connectivity to process the exponentially rising bandwidth with new models and higher usage,” he said.

The chip giant has already made some photonics tech available as part of its networking solutions offering, with the company announcing tools that it said will enable AI factories to connect millions of GPUs across sites while drastically reducing energy consumption and operational costs.

“When you look upstream, you come to the conclusion that we’re starting to scale our silicon photonics technology,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said at the GTC in March, pointing to Nvidia’s ethernet networking platform used to connect AI factories and GPU clusters. He also said the company was starting to add photonics to its GPU-to-GPU interconnect technology.

“Which means the amount of silicon photonics technology capacity that we need is substantially higher than the world has today,” he added. “So we work with the supply chain to make sure we can help them build up the capacity in advance of that.”

Lumentum’s stock has risen 134% since the start of the year, while Coherent is up 96%. Marvell has seen its shares increase by 122% in 2026 and Corning 111%.

Chipmaker AMD joined Nvidia in the Ayer Labs round, as well as acquiring startup Enosemi in 2025, alongside making equity investments in Teramount and Celestial AI. Alphabet and Microsoft venture arms backed nEye in an $80 million Series C in April.

But deploying photonics tech across the AI infrastructure stack at scale comes with its own challenges.

“The technology is sound, production scale is the harder problem,” Nick Patience, AI lead at the Futurum Group, told CNBC.

“Manufacturing yield on complex co-packaged optical assemblies remains a challenge because precise alignment of optical and silicon components is unforgiving, and when something goes wrong in the packaging process, the assembly typically can’t be reworked,” he said.

“So the transition is underway, but it’s still early,” Patience added. “I would expect us to see large-scale adoption from 2028 onwards.”

The CNBC Investing Club on Wednesday held its May Monthly Meeting, featuring Jim Cramer and Jeff Marks, director of portfolio analysis, covering all 33 stocks in the portfolio. Jim offered his unvarnished takes on the stocks and spotlighted his four favorite names for new Club members to buy. Jeff also provided an in-depth look at the two newest positions and why we initiated positions. One theme Jim emphasized was the importance of diversification, even in moments where one dominant theme drives the market. Right now, artificial intelligence is winning the day. We have plenty of AI winners. But as long-term investors, our discipline requires us to own other stocks too. Now, let’s get into what Jim and Jeff had to say. The four stocks that Jim recommended new Club members buy are marked in bold. Big tech winners Alphabet : We were wrong to sell it last spring. We were right to buy it back, lured by the powerful combination of Google Search, Gemini, Google Cloud, YouTube, and the robotaxi service Waymo. For new members, Google is Jim’s favorite to buy right now. Amazon : This is another one with a remarkable collection of businesses. From cloud unit Amazon Web Services and its custom silicon chips to the Prime membership program and the advertising business, these are all worth more than what the current stock price indicates. Some investors may be worried about its massive AI spending, but the profits should start flowing as soon as next year. Apple : The stock has experienced a sudden run on optimism around its AI offerings. Many investors were worried after Apple’s delayed AI rollout, but we’re glad it didn’t end up putting out a second-rate product. Apple focuses on being the best, not the first. Let’s hope we get a long-awaited AI-infused Siri at the company’s annual developer conference on June 8 . Nvidia : The AI chip giant finds itself where Apple was over a decade ago, and it should follow in the iPhone maker’s footsteps by embarking on a massive buyback program paired with consistent, large dividend increases. Nvidia’s best buy right now is its own stock. Big tech laggards Meta Platforms : CEO Mark Zuckerberg is known for not tolerating underperformance, but that’s exactly what this stock has delivered lately. We’re afraid to sell it, only for Meta to deliver a breakthrough on AI shortly after we do. So, we’re keeping it. Microsoft : A similar debate here. We can all see there are real issues here, and it is inconceivable that CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood do not see them as well. We’re giving them another quarter to show something that improves their prospects in the age of AI. We’ve owned this one for almost a decade and don’t want to give back any more of that gain. Saving grace AI plays Arm Holdings : Our second newest name, after FedEx, has been a rocket ship since we bought the chipmaker last month. Concerns about securing enough manufacturing capacity from TSMC haven’t vanished. It’s just that the zest for anything data center-related has made the question not matter for the stock. We took more profits on Tuesday. Broadcom : This one has stalled out recently, perhaps due to concerns that Marvell is a real threat in the custom AI chip business and a lack of new customer announcements. But we cannot forget the strength of its networking portfolio and the steady hand of CEO Hack Tan. We’re happy to wait out the sellers here because Broadcom remains at the heart of the data center. Eaton : This is a great example of a company doing the best to ease power concerns caused by the data center buildout. Eaton makes cooling and electrical equipment that makes the data center run smoothly and without interruption. GE Vernova : Another great pick to play AI’s insatiable appetite for energy. GE Vernova is a winner because it’s the principal builder of natural gas turbines that provide power to data centers. Corning : As data center operators wean themselves off of slow copper connections and onto fiber, this stock is our biggest winner. Corning is a fabulous, treasured American company and a tremendous name to own, as it keeps getting rediscovered by the analyst community. Qnity : Spun off from DuPont in the fall, Qnity is crushing it because of the AI chip boom. We’ve taken some profits, but we still like it, especially considering the stock remains under the radar on Wall Street. When more tech-focused analysts start covering it instead of chemical specialists, we could see that next leg of upside. Tech outside the data center CrowdStrike : It took gumption to stick with cybersecurity stocks during the “AI is eating software” sell-off earlier this year. We ignored the negatives here, and we’ve been rewarded with shares racing back to all-time highs. The small pullback on Wednesday, following peer ZScaler’s disappointing outlook, isn’t cause for concern . Palo Alto Networks : The long-term importance of cybersecurity isn’t fading. So for now, we’re comfortable holding a second cyber stock in Palo Alto. Both CrowdStrike and Palo Alto report earnings next week. Salesforce : The toughest tech stock we own reports earnings after Wednesday’s close. The debate: If it’s going to take a while to realize the AI implications, why not just sell it, and if we really want to, we can just buy it back? We’ll have a better idea of what to do when we get the latest quarterly numbers. The diversifiers The goal of the Club is to run a diversified portfolio that is durable and works over the long term. That means we can’t own just data center and AI plays. We also must recognize that not everything goes up at once. Goldman Sachs : This is a business that typically operates in sales and trading but excels in the far more lucrative IPO and M & A markets. It wouldn’t be surprising if the nearly $1,000 stock could rally 25% from here by the fall. That’s how many big public offerings and mergers are about to happen. This is another stock that Jim said new members can consider buying. Wells Fargo : It might be time to say goodbye if the bank reports another bad quarter. Its last earnings release was so disappointing that we downgraded the stock. It’s perplexing because CEO Charlie Scharf has done tremendous work. Capital One : It’s hard not to be disappointed in this bank after its top and bottom line misses in late April, and another subpar quarter before that. CEO Richard Fairbank is an exceptional leader, but Capital One hasn’t yet rationalized the Discover business it acquired last year as we hoped. It’s a cheap stock, and we’re willing to be a little more patient with this one compared with Wells. Eli Lilly : We’ve owned this one for years, and it’s done well by us. Its next-generation injectable retatrutide is poised to be the real game-breaker, the one that allows Lilly to pull away from its main rival, Novo Nordisk , for good. Cardinal Health : No getting around the fact that there’s been a harsh and destructive rotation away from medical device and ancillary health-care names. The reaction to last month’s earnings was excessive for a company of Cardinal’s quality. This is a stock worth battling. Johnson & Johnson : Another victim of the market’s disdain for health care. But management has an exciting portfolio and pipeline of new drugs and medical technology products to accelerate growth in the coming years. Plus, it has adopted a stronger legal strategy to fend off talc lawsuits and refocus investors on business fundamentals. J & J said its new once-daily psoriasis pill could be one of its biggest drugs ever. Home Depot : This has been our main bet on falling mortgage rates and a major pickup in housing activity. That, unfortunately, hasn’t materialized despite the Federal Reserve’s rate cuts in recent years. But we don’t want to take this hedge off because we never know when that catalyst will arrive. Costco : Far better than Home Depot within retail is Costco, which reports on Thursday night. The quarter should be fine because it sells cheap gas to attract new cardholders . TJX Companies : Another retail winner. We bought ahead of last week’s earnings, and we’re glad we did. The T.J. Maxx and Marshalls parent may still be cheap enough to buy for those of you who are new to the Club. Yes, it is that good. Starbucks : We’re sticking with this one. We’re glad we didn’t bail when Wall Street got sick of it in the $80s and $90s range. Recent results show CEO Brian Niccol’s turnaround is working. There should be more upside for the stock as he works his way through the long list of problems. Procter & Gamble : Like Home Depot, P & G is a hedge. In this case, it’s a way to protect against a severe slowdown. We’re not saying one is imminent, but we also didn’t foresee a war in the Middle East. You just don’t know. Nike : This stock has been a disappointment. No denying that. If the apparel maker posts yet another lackluster quarter and Wall Street is forced to cut estimates again, we’ll have to dump it. CEO Elliott Hill might have just been dealt too bad a hand. The industrials Boeing : This is another one that Jim said new members should consider buying. As monthly deliveries increase, the stock should keep moving higher toward that $300 level. The stock is up nearly 2% Wednesday afternoon after CEO Kelly Ortberg said at a conference that it has met regulatory requirements to increase 737 Max production. Honeywell : We trimmed some on Tuesday because the stock is running for a preposterous reason: it owns half of a quantum computing company that is going public. That excitement has overwhelmed the market’s judgment. Honeywell’s stake in Quantinuum actually means very little to shareholders like us. The real catalyst is the industrial conglomerate’s upcoming split. DuPont : This one is a pastiche of chemicals, plastics, filtration, and safety materials. It’s hard for investors to get their arms around, though, which is why the stock’s been a bit directionless for some time. There’s plenty of value in DuPont. CEO Lori Koch just needs to bring it out soon, or else we’ll exit our position. Its former electronics business, now trading as Qnity, has been the real star of the show. Dover : This is a terrific conglomerate levered to so many different parts of a growing economy. But it’s hard to figure out what to make of Dover the stock. It seemingly trades up and down on nothing, while other names soar. This is one we’re monitoring closely to determine whether it deserves to stay in the portfolio. Linde : The good thing about this industrial gas company is that it’s exposed to a host of industries, including health care, semiconductors, wine, and soda. Linde is the kind of stock that does well when the economy is just OK and superb when the economy is humming. FedEx : We called up FedEx from our Bullpen watchlist on May 18. CEO Raj Subramaniam has done a great job improving FedEx’s operations, and the spin-off of its freight shipping business next week is another catalyst for making investors money. We love spin-offs around here because they help companies get a sharper focus. (See here for a full list of the stocks in Jim Cramer’s Charitable Trust.)
Since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 and the start of the generative AI craze, one name has dominated the infrastructure boom: Nvidia.

While the chipmaker — and the world’s most valuable company — continues to prosper and is expected to show revenue growth of 70% this fiscal year, Wall Street has moved elsewhere, piling into businesses that were hardly visible in the initial years of the artificial intelligence buildout.

This week offered the starkest illustration yet of what MIzuho analyst Jordan Klein said could be a “changing of the guard in AI.” Chipmakers Advanced Micro Devices and Intel notched gains of about 25%, while memory maker Micron jumped more than 37% and fiber-optic cable maker Corning climbed about 18%.

All four of those companies have more than doubled in value this year, with Intel leading the way, up well over 200%. Nvidia, meanwhile, is only slightly ahead of the Nasdaq in 2026, gaining 15% for the year, aided by an 8% rally this week.

In spreading the wealth to a wider swath of hardware companies, investors are clearly betting that the bull market in AI has long legs and that data centers are going to need a wider array of advanced components for years to come. Memory has been the biggest theme of late due to a global shortage that’s driven up prices and turned Micron, a 47-year-old company tucked in a sleepy corner of the semiconductor market, into one of the hottest trades over the past 12 months.

Micron blew past an $800 billion market capitalization for the first time this week, and the stock is now up over 750% in the past year. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra told CNBC in March that key customers are only getting “50% to two-thirds of their requirements” because of supply issues.

The memory market is largely dominated by Micron, along with Korea-based Samsung and SK Hynix, which are also both in the midst of historic rallies.

“That is what happens when a market quickly enters a material shortage condition and pricing surges higher” while expenses “rise only modestly,” Mizuho’s Klein wrote in a note to clients early in the week. “You make a lot of money being overweight historic memory upturns when new capacity cannot be added fast enough. That simple.”

Agents drive ‘tremendous demand’

Now CPUs are back in the spotlight as momentum shifts from chatbots to AI agents. Bank of America estimates the data center CPU market could more than double from $27 billion in 2025 to $60 billion in 2030.

AMD’s quarterly results this week underscored the emerging trend, as earnings, revenue and guidance sailed past estimates on strong data center growth. The company has long led the CPU charge, and CEO Lisa Su said on the earnings call that AMD now expects 35% growth over the next three to five years in the server CPU market, up from a forecast of 18% growth that the company provided in November.

“Agents are really driving tremendous demand in the overall AI adoption cycle, and we’re very excited to be in the middle of it,” Su told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” on Wednesday, following the company’s earnings report.

Analysts at Goldman Sachs and Bernstein upgraded the stock to buy ratings, citing CPU tailwinds. And JPMorgan Chase analysts said the report “crystallizes the structural inflection underway across both server CPU and [datacenter] accelerator growth trajectories.”

Intel, which for many years towered over AMD in the CPU market before missing out on numerous major transitions, most notably AI, is in the midst of a revival sparked by a major investment from the U.S. government last year.

Intel’s stock had its best month on record in April, more than doubling, and has continued notching massive gains, rising 33% in the early days of May. The shares surged 13% on Tuesday following a Bloomberg report that Apple is in talks with Intel and Samsung to produce the main processors for its U.S. devices. They climbed another 14% on Friday after the Wall Street Journal reported that Intel and Apple have come to an agreement for the chipmaker to manufacture some processors for Apple devices.

Representatives from Intel and Apple declined to comment.

Elsewhere in the new AI stack, some companies are directly benefiting from partnerships with Nvidia.

Glass maker Corning, which celebrated its 175th anniversary this week, signed a massive deal with Nvidia on Wednesday that involves the development of three new U.S. factories dedicated entirely to optical technologies for the chip giant.

The deal gives Nvidia the right to invest up to $3.2 billion in Corning, and is likely a major step in Nvidia’s move away from copper cables and towards fiber-optic cables as it builds out its rack-scale systems. Earlier this year, Corning inked a $6 billion deal with Meta through 2030 to provide fiber-optic cables in the social media company’s AI data centers.

He said the economy is going through the “single largest infrastructure buildout in human history.”

Corning’s recent boom on Wall Street pushed its stock to a record in February, when it finally passed its prior high from the dot-com era in 2000. It’s continued to soar in the months since.

Analysts are seeing plenty of other comparisons to the internet boom of the late 1990s, which preceded an extended market bust.

Jonathan Krinksy, an analyst at BTIG, said in a recent note that the magnitude of the markup in the semiconductor space resembles 1999. He warned of a 25% to 30% correction for the PHLX Semiconductor Index, a significant benchmark for the sector, which is up 66% so far this year.

“We have written ad nauseam about how extreme the move in semis has been — in many cases not seen since the dot-com bubble,” he said. “In some ways, however, this move is actually more extreme.”

It’s been a lucrative endeavor, as the company’s $5 billion bet on Intel is now worth over $25 billion, a historic return in a matter of months.

In 2026, the pace of deals has kicked into overdrive, with Nvidia already topping $40 billion in commitments and expanding its portfolio to include more public equities.

This week alone Nvidia forged an agreement with data center operator IREN, giving it the right to invest up to $2.1 billion in the company, a day after Nvidia struck a pact with Corning, allowing it to invest up to $3.2 billion in the 175-year-old glass maker. Shares of IREN and Corning popped on the announcements.

Nvidia has been the biggest winner of the artificial intelligence boom, producing the graphics processing units required to train AI models and run large workloads. The global scramble to secure GPUs has lifted Nvidia’s stock by more than 11-fold in four years, propelling the company to a roughly $5.2 trillion market cap and making it the most valuable business in the world.

To help the company grow its dominance beyond chips, Nvidia is financing the entire AI supply chain, ensuring it runs on Nvidia hardware and that there’s sufficient capacity to meet demand. But there’s growing concern in some corners of AI that Nvidia — like cloud providers Google and Amazon — is investing in other companies as a way to fuel its own growth.

Nvidia, which generated $97 billion in free cash flow last fiscal year, is backing some of the very companies that buy its chips and, in some cases, is leasing compute right back to them. Critics have compared it to the vendor financing that helped inflate the dot-com bubble.

Matthew Bryson, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, said in a note that Nvidia’s investments and buildouts fit “squarely into the circular investment theme” that’s been driving fears around the market’s durability. However, Bryson sees the investments as underscoring Nvidia’s vision and creating a “competitive moat” if the company can execute.

An Nvidia spokesperson didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Nvidia has signed at least seven multibillion-dollar investments this year with publicly traded companies. Additionally, it’s been part of roughly two dozen investment rounds in private companies, including some relatively early-stage deals, according to FactSet.

With Nvidia’s earnings report for its fiscal first quarter less than two weeks away, shareholders will get a clearer picture of the size of the company’s expanding portfolio and its impact on financials.

The company said those investments include AI model companies that purchase its products directly or through cloud service providers.

Non-marketable equity securities (which are private company investments) held on Nvidia’s balance sheet swelled to $22.25 billion at the end of January from $3.39 billion a year earlier. The company reported gains on those assets as well as publicly held equities of $8.92 billion, up from $1.03 billion in the prior fiscal year, in part due its investment in Intel, which has turned into a stock market darling this year, up well over 200%.

On Nvidia’s last earnings call in February, Huang said, “Our investments are focused very squarely, strategically on expanding and deepening our ecosystem reach.”

The IREN deal this week includes an agreement that the data center company will deploy up to 5 gigawatts of Nvidia’s DSX-branded infrastructure designs intended to power AI workloads at facilities across the globe.

As part of the Corning deal, the glass company is building three new U.S. facilities dedicated to optical technologies for Nvidia, which will likely be turning to fiber-optic cables instead of copper as it builds out its rack-scale systems.

In January, Nvidia invested $2 billion in CoreWeave in a deal that involves building out data centers with Nvidia’s technology. It also invested $2 billion in Nebius Group, an AI cloud company, as part of an agreement on AI infrastructure deployment, fleet management, inference and AI factory design.

Chip analyst Jordan Klein at Mizuho called the deals with component makers “super smart by the CFO and team and a great use of cash,” because they help accelerate the development of critical technology and products that are in short supply. He’s more skeptical of the neocloud investments, which he said “feel more questionable to me and likely investors.”

“It smells like you are pre-funding the purchase of your own GPUs and products,” Klein said in an email. Still, he noted that the cloud providers have critical attributes like power and data center capacity that Nvidia needs.

Ben Bajarin at Creative Strategies shared a similar sentiment regarding IREN, telling CNBC, “The risk is that if the cycle turns, the market starts questioning how much of the demand was organic versus supported by Nvidia’s own balance sheet.”

As much as Nvidia is funneling money into publicly traded partners, those wagers are dwarfed by the chipmaker’s investment in OpenAI.

The $30 billion Nvidia pumped into OpenAI in late February came more than a decade after the companies started working together, though they’ve grown increasingly intertwined since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, the moment that sparked the generative AI frenzy.

Nvidia’s investment in OpenAI was originally going to be much bigger. In September, the companies said Nvidia would be putting in up to $100 billion over time into OpenAI as the AI company deployed 10 gigawatt’s of Nvidia’s systems. That deal never got off the ground as OpenAI pivoted away from developing data centers, instead leaning heavily on partners like Oracle, Microsoft and Amazon to piece together as much capacity as possible.

Huang said in March that investing $100 billion in OpenAI is probably “not in the cards,” and that the $30 billion deal “might be the last time” it writes a check before an IPO that could take place this year.

IREN shares were volatile after news broke, but climbed 6% Friday.

Nvidia and IREN will deploy up to 5 gigawatts of the chip maker’s DSX-branded infrastructure designs intended to power artificial intelligence workloads throughout the Australian firm’s data center facilities across the world.

The data center operator will issue Nvidia a five-year right to purchase up to 30 million shares of its ordinary stock at an exercise price of $70 per share, the company said in an announcement. Nvidia will have the right to invest $2.1 billion into the company via the deal.

“AI factories are becoming foundational infrastructure for the global economy,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement. “Deploying these systems at scale requires deep integration across the full stack — compute, networking, software, power and operations.”

Nvidia has bolstered its stack by making similar deals involving multibillion-dollar purchase agreements with companies like Coherent, Lumentum and earlier this week, Corning.

In a separate release, IREN said it signed a five-year deal worth $3.4 billion to provide Nvidia with access to managed GPU cloud services “for its internal AI and research workloads.” The deployment will be at IREN’s existing data centers in Childress, Texas.

Although IREN previously specialized in data centers that were tailored for bitcoin mining, it’s been increasingly providing AI-related infrastructure services as part of the AI boom.

In Nov. 2025, IREN and Microsoft inked a multi-year $9.7 billion deal “to deliver GPU cloud infrastructure powered by NVIDIA GB300 GPUs” at its Childress, Texas. data center, the company said at the time. As part of that deal, IREN said it also “entered into an agreement” with Dell Technologies to purchase the GPUs and related computing gear for roughly $5.8 billion.

Here’s a recap of Wednesday’s key moments. 1. The S & P 500 and Nasdaq touched record highs on Wednesday on progress toward a possible U.S.-Iran peace deal. “Oil went down, interest rates [bond yields] went down, and that allowed a roaring tech rally,” Jim Cramer said. AI and data center infrastructure stocks continued to lead the market higher, helped by a new optical fiber partnership between Corning and Nvidia . “It does matter,” Cramer said, reiterating his view that the economy is increasingly being driven by compute and AI. Corning shares rose 11%. We’re putting together a story on all of Corning’s Investor Day news, including new guidance. Check your inboxes and texts shortly for our alert. 2. Shares of Arm Holdings climbed 12% ahead of earnings, but Jim warned investors not to expect a huge post-report rally even if the chip maker delivers strong results. “The problem is Arm is going up ahead of the news,” Jim said, noting that sharp pre-earnings gains can limit upside afterward. Investors will be watching for royalty growth and updates on new customers when Arm reports Wednesday evening. While Arm-based CPUs continue gaining traction with hyperscaler customers like fellow Club names Amazon and Alphabet, Jim emphasized that competition remains intense. “It’s Intel , it’s them [Arm], and it’s AMD — and that’s a very powerful series of enemies,” he said. 3. Alphabet and Amazon “may be the two best” members of the Magnificent Seven , Jim said, adding that Nvidia still belongs in that conversation as well. Cramer said he is “so glad we own Amazon.” He also called it “very right” that the Club re-bought Alphabet at the end of last year after exiting the stock in March 2025. The discussion came after reports that Anthropic committed to spend as much as $200 billion with Google Cloud over the next five years. Jim said he regrets not re-buying Advanced Micro Devices like he did with Alphabet. 4. Stocks covered in Wednesday’s rapid fire at the end of the video were: Uber , Disney , Solstice Advanced Materials , and Kraft Heinz . (Jim Cramer’s Charitable Trust is long Alphabet, Amazon, Arm, Corning, and Nvidia. See here for a full list of the stocks.)
I am growing tired of the endless bubble talk about all of the data center spending. It’s obvious from this quarter that the bubble talk has been proven wrong; try getting someone to say that, though. So, who do I think I am to go there? Just an observer. One who believes that this was the quarter where we realized that if you didn’t spend, you were already behind the 8-ball. This quarter, so far, we have seen the results of five large companies that are often discussed as creating the bubble: Club names Alphabet (parent company of Google), Amazon , Apple , Microsoft , and Meta Platforms (parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Threads, WhatsApp). Those are five of the “Magnificent Seven” stocks. (No. 6 is Nvidia , which we also own; it reports on May 20. Tesla is the seventh, but we don’t own it.) All so far have spent a huge amount to build out their sites. All have much more building to do. Let’s look at how much the companies estimated their capital expenditures to be this year and how their stocks did this week before and after earnings. Alphabet, data center spend, $180 billion to $190 billion, stock price: $349 to $385 for a 12% weekly gain. Amazon, data center spend, $200 billion, stock price: $260 to $268 for a 1.6% weekly gain. Apple, data center spend: $13 billion, stock price: $271 per share (April 24 close) to $280 (Friday close) for a 3.4% weekly gain. Microsoft, data center spend, $190 billion, stock $429 to $414 for a 2.4% weekly loss. Meta, data center spend, $125 bilion to $145 billion, stock price: $670 to $605 for a 9.8% weekly loss. Consider what they used that spending on: Alphabet: Google Cloud, tensor processing units (TPUs are custom chips co-designed by Club name Broadcom ), and graphics processing units (GPUs) Amazon: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Anthropic cloud capacity; custom Trainium, Graviton, and Inferentia semiconductors Apple: private cloud Microsoft: Azure companion, OpenAI compute needs Meta: Internal training, recommendation engines These are the broad-brush spend numbers, and we can learn a lot about the bang for the buck now that we are a quarter in full artificial intelligence motion. Here are some conclusions. Alphabet and Amazon have had some excellent post-earnings reactions. Why? I think that Alphabet’s stock is reacting to the incredible growth of Google Cloud and the perfect steerage of Thomas Kurian, who runs the cloud business. Google Cloud is the fastest-growing at 63% with an annual revenue run rate of over $80 billion. This quarter, it had $20 billion in revenue. Google also uses its spend to bolster the seamless transition from Google Search to Gemini. Amazon’s stock rallied because Amazon Web Services is now growing at 28% with an annualized revenue run rate of $150 billion and a quarter where it did $37.6 billion in revenue. That’s the fastest growth in 15 quarters, a huge deal when you consider the base. It wasn’t that long ago when AWS was growing in the low double digits. This growth shocked everyone and led, in part, to the great performance of the stock. Apple has the least amount of spend and it has a free-riding business off of Google. Apple may not have wanted that; in fact, it backed into it. But because Apple has a worldwide installed base of 2.5 billion devices, it earned the right to get Google’s Gemini for a low cost — some would say no cost when you add in how much Google pays for Google to be embedded in the Apple iPhone on the search side. Google can dominate because of Apple and not vice versa. Microsoft’s stock fell, I think, in part because while Azure is growing at 40% with an annualized revenue run rate of $90 billion to $95 billion and a quarter of $22 billion to $24 billion in sales, those numbers include compute demand from OpenAI. Again, we don’t know the breakdown, but the street isn’t giving it any credit for Azure’s acceleration from the 36% the Street expected. There’s also no certainty to their capex numbers; they could be higher. Microsoft is very vulnerable as a company because while it has a hybrid model of consumption and software as a service, the latter has gone from being a premium business to a business in search of the appropriate discount rate. Plus, unlike Google with Gemini, Copilot is not considered up to snuff, even with 20 million paid users. Unlike Amazon, with its web service and retail businesses as well as its advertising business, Azure hasn’t monetized its cloud business enough, and a lot of it is derived from OpenAI. Unlike Google, there’s, yes, Bing. Meta doesn’t have a cloud business at all, so it can’t monetize what it has as well as the other companies. Plus, it actually decided to increase data center spending by $10 billion. In other words, not only was its spending viewed as profligate to begin with, given that it doesn’t have a cloud, it actually is spending more with a very uncertain return, especially given that its Meta AI isn’t wowing anyone. So now let’s zoom out to see what the stocks are saying about the so-called spending bubble. Alphabet’s spend makes a ton of sense. Just as Google Search beat everyone, including Microsoft, it looks like it is happening again with Gemini. The spend is also worth it because of its giant YouTube business. It’s being appropriately rewarded. Amazon’s spend also seems totally justified and then some, given that AWS, its most lucrative division, is accelerating. The market’s wising up to the luck (and greatness) of Apple. Given its leverage on its newfound accelerated growth rate of 17% (from 9% previously), it deserves the high multiple it’s been given: twice its growth rate at $280. If Apple’s services revenue keeps growing at its 16% pace, the stock should go higher, given the incredible gross margin on that business of 77%. It prints money as it grows its business by offering multiple services for subscription that you can’t live without. The people who believe that all of this spend leads to a bubble do not understand the power of being No. 1. Google Gemini is No. 1 in search of the publicly traded companies. Amazon is No. 1 in shopping, advertising, and enterprise cloud. Apple is No. 1 in phones. Meta is No. 1 in the still fast-growing social media business, but it is ad-supported — and if we go into a slowdown, it is vulnerable and may not make the numbers. It has the most cyclicality. Microsoft holds the top spot in enterprise software. That was a terrific advantage for ages, but it has a huge “per seat” business, and that business could be disrupted by AI. It is considered very vulnerable. Plus, we may be at the high watermark for all of its enterprise software products, given what we know about OpenAI and Anthropic’s Claude. That makes us want to pay less for its stock as there might be fewer Microsoft users. So, now let’s simplify: Amazon and Alphabet are getting the most for their dollars and are unlikely to be disrupted by AI. Their spend is worth every penny. Microsoft may have to spend even more than it has to come up with better products that can keep its enterprise software dominance. The market is saying right now that it can’t. Meta is in trouble and needs to make some sort of move to bring out shareholder value — or else, I am prepared to sell it for the Club portfolio. So far the “Trust in Mark Zuckerberg” view is not paying off. Apple’s got nothing but upside, no matter what happens. Or, to put it another way, he who spends the most and spends it well, wins. On Alphabet’s post-earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai said, “Our cloud revenue would have been higher if we had more compute.” Everyone is compute-constrained and can’t get enough Nvidia. It fits right into what Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has been saying for years: “Anthropic and OpenAI are highly compute-constrained. Doubling their compute capacity could increase revenue fourfold. Compute equals revenues.” With training, Jensen also correctly said, “The more you buy, the more you save.” With inference, it’s now, “the more you buy, the more you make,” Jensen concluded. Tell me how that spend isn’t incredibly important and justified, especially in a world where OpenAI could be worth a trillion, Anthropic maybe more than a trillion. Both are looking to become publicly traded companies, maybe as soon as late this year. Those two have an element of free riding, too, as their businesses are fast-growing and are therefore boosted by companies that want to sell something. The bubble talk only works if you don’t care about a company’s dominance or its stock price. I care about both. I want to make money. Not just talk about bubbles. As a lot of potential gains flow from these determinations, these companies are spending to have the best AI agents. These agents — software programs that can take instructions, think, plan, act, and learn — need massive amounts of central processing units (CPUs), which are made by the skyrockets that are Advanced Micro Devices , Intel , and our newest Club name Arm Holdings . AI agents are often used as virtual personal assistants, in call centers, and even for computer coding. Spending underlies the fiber buildout and connectivity companies like Lumentum , Coherent , and portfolio holding Corning. It helps the networking companies, Ciena , Cisco Systems , and Arista Networks (of which I like Arista best and wished I had bought when we exited Cisco). It bolsters the fancy GPUs from Nvidia, of which all but Apple still use; they just don’t talk about it much. For all of its bluster about Trainium and Graviton, Amazon is buying one million chips by the end of 2027. It means the world to chip partners Broadcom, which partners with Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic — and Marvell Technology , which collaborates with Amazon and Microsoft. These two companies— Broadcom and Marvell — help wean the big hyperscalers off a part of Nvidia and have hurt Nvidia’s stock the most, especially given that Anthropic runs mostly on Amazon’s chips; hence the big business there. It’s incredibly important to those involved in the building of the data centers, the improvement of the grid, and the cooling process: We’re talking about Quanta , Oracle , Vertiv , Nebius , and CoreWeave, as well as Club names GE Vernova and Eaton . It’s great business for back-up power generators like Cummins , Caterpillar , and Generac . And, of course, it is the lifeblood of memory companies Micron , SanDisk , Seagate , and Western Digital . The bubble callers would say that each one of these stocks is inflated. I come back and say that it is existential to those companies that don’t spend enough. The bubble callers say all of these stocks have run too much. I say that if they settle in here and work off their parabolic status, many of these could still be bought. The bubble callers think that this is 1999-2000 when the dotcom boom unraveled. Let’s just refresh my standing: I was a hedge fund manager who created a company that at one point was worth more than a billion, and not that long after was worth $70 million (in enterprise value) — and, simultaneously, had his best years in the hedge fund business in 1999 and 2000, with the latter gaining 36% almost all on the short side. In other words, been there, done that, twice. Here are the key differences. In 2000, Google was private and could outspend everyone and won in search and video. That’s how it got to its exalted status. Amazon was spending a fortune to knock everyone out of online spending and then out of the web business; when it was done, its dominance in Prime. Apple hadn’t created the iPhone yet. Microsoft was prosecuted by the government for being so powerful. Meta hadn’t started yet. The spend then was worth it. Now on the vendor side then, not so good. This is where the bubble was. Instead of building out the power network, we built out the fiber network. Big mistake. We weren’t there yet with video. We only had dial-up. So, we didn’t need so much fiber. That was the bubble on the hardware side. On the software side were countless companies that competed with each other in all sorts of verticals that ultimately produced only one or two winners in each segment. Most were traffic winners. Those that could monetize on a subscription basis were winners. So were those who could attract enough eyeballs. What we didn’t realize was that the brick-and-mortar businesses after initially stumbling came roaring back to crush the online-only companies with only a handful of Amazon-like companies surviving. Were there bubbles? Absolutely. How were they formed so easily? Because the syndicate desks didn’t see the rise of the individual trader, chiefly via E-trade and Ameritrade, and Schwab . It was so easy to put orders in, and there was so much money being made that the venture capitalists threw money at anything, and then it came public with very little vetting. It was such a ridiculous time that the accounts that did the most business and the friends and family accounts got stock and then could flip it when the retail buyers came in with market orders. The syndicate desks engineered the pop by only offering a sliver of stock. In six months’ time, if they were still in business, the companies did giant secondaries that included huge insider selling and small amounts of money to help the business. Then the businesses went under. More than 300 of them. Fast-forward to now, do you see a lot of businesses coming public so far that look like the unprofitable losers of that dotcom bubble-bursting era? Many thought that CoreWeave looked like that, but CoreWeave is creating a business of tremendous value as a buyer of Nvidia chips, which more than hold their value. Could there be circular deals? Another canard. I was approached by a company that was later prosecuted for the Lazy Susan deals it was doing all over the place. It wanted to give me a $10 million investment that I was immediately going to flip back to buy services the company was buying. I wish I were wearing a wire. I knew not to take that deal. We thought that Nvidia was doing circular deals all over the place. Now, what we see is just a series of incredible investments. The only miss was not giving Anthropic $10 billion when it first needed it. No Lazy Susans. Notice no one even talks about circular anymore? It is too absurd. So, let’s sum it all up. This quarter’s earnings reports amount to nothing short of a Judgment Day for AI. The companies that spent well are now the winners and are beginning to get the kinds of returns we once thought possible, with the exception of Apple, which got the return by free-riding off Google. If Apple hadn’t spent as much as it has to establish cellphone dominance, it wouldn’t be a winner. The companies that didn’t spend enough or didn’t spend wisely are now faced with a shrinking multiple and an uncertain future. Microsoft has a big installed base; it might be able to produce something important to justify the spend. Meta, too. But make no mistake about it, I am worried about both right now. It’s too bad that there were so many who didn’t believe or people who thought, “who cares, I am in an index fund.” Let me tell you something, as someone who can only own an S & P 500 index fund personally (because of my role as a financial journalist), I care. I don’t think you would have gotten to the end of this piece if you didn’t care, too. Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the number of paid Copilot users.
The S & P 500 kept its record run alive last week, boosted by a strong batch of earnings reports that showed the artificial intelligence spending boom isn’t slowing down. Even more earnings are on the way in the coming week. Plus, the jobs market will be under the microscope. The market’s blistering rally in recent weeks has occurred despite continued disruptions to global energy supplies in the Middle East. Enthusiasm for the AI trade and signs of a resilient U.S. economy have triumphed over worries about elevated oil prices. This tension remains something to keep an eye on. But at the moment, the bulls are in control. Now, let’s get into the three biggest things on our radar this week. 1. Earnings: A trio of Club names are set to deliver quarterly results this week. All revenue and EPS estimates are courtesy of data provider LSEG. Electrical equipment supplier Eaton reports on Tuesday morning. The main theme of this report is the AI buildout and the resulting order growth for Eaton. In the fourth quarter, Eaton saw a roughly 200% increase in data center orders within its Electrical Americas segment, its largest. Where will that figure be this time around? Eaton makes a bunch of products used in data centers that collectively feed the power-hungry server racks with consistent and reliable electricity. That’s no longer all. Thanks to a wise acquisition of Boyd Thermal, which closed in March, Eaton is now in the liquid cooling business. This moves them even closer to the AI chips — obviously a lucrative place to be these days. We expect to hear more about Boyd on the earnings call. Eaton’s order backlog will be another focus. It totaled $19.6 billion at the end of 2025. With Eaton ramping up manufacturing capacity, earnings this year are expected to be stronger in the second half of the year. Revenue : $7.08 billion EPS : $2.74 DuPont also reports Tuesday morning, and one of our biggest focuses will be on the performance of its Healthcare & Water Technologies segment, the company’s most exciting since spinning off its electronics business last fall into the standalone Qnity . That segment is expected to see mid-digits organic growth this year. Its other reporting unit, called Diversified Industrials, is projected to grow low single digits, helped in part by a stabilization in U.S. construction activity and aerospace strength. DuPont is the kind of company that investors worry could be hurt by war-related slowdowns in economic activity, so the company’s commentary on any changes to customer behavior since late February will be valuable. Revenue : $1.67 billion EPS : $0.48 Arm Holdings is our final report of the week on Wednesday night. This will be Arm’s first earnings call since debuting its AI-focused central processing unit (CPU) for data centers in March — and its first since we took a stake on April 20. No doubt, the CPU, dubbed the AGI CPU, will be a big conversation on the earnings call, as this marks a strategic shift for the company into designing a complete chip rather than simply licensing its Arm instruction set to other chipmakers in exchange for royalties. As far as the quarter on deck, though, Arm’s revenues will be driven by royalties and licensing fees because the AGI CPU isn’t on the market yet. Booming AI demand should fuel strong growth for Arm’s cloud revenue in its fiscal 2026 fourth quarter. One question mark is the health of the smartphone royalty stream going forward, as sky-high memory prices are expected to squeeze that market . In a note to clients Friday, analysts at Morgan Stanley said the trajectory of Arm’s operating expenses in its fiscal 2027 is a focus for investors. The contribution of SoftBank to Arm’s license revenues is another area to watch, Morgan Stanley said. Last quarter, SoftBank represented $200 million of $505 million in license revenue. Revenue : $1.47 billion EPS : $0.58 A couple non-Club earnings reports worth flagging because they’re tied to the AI trade: Chipmaker AMD reports on Tuesday night, as does optical technology supplier and Nvidia partner Lumentum. Coherent, another optical player and Nvidia partner, will release results on Wednesday night. And then on Thursday, we’ll hear from CoreWeave, the AI cloud computing provider. Away from the data center, Club name Cardinal Health’s two main rivals, Cencora and McKesson, report on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. 2. Corning’s investor day: Fresh off a quarter that was stronger than the stock pullback indicated , Corning holds an investor day on Wednesday in New York. The AI boom is fueling demand for Corning’s fiber-optic technology inside data centers, so we expect to hear plenty of bullish updates. Specifically, Corning plans to update and extend its “Springboard” growth initiative out two more years to 2030. For now, Corning’s Springboard plan is expected to add $11 billion in incremental annualized sales through 2028. We’ll see where that target goes next. We would also love to hear any more details on Corning’s long-term supply agreements with three hyperscalers (only Meta has been publicly disclosed). Are there any more on the soon on the way? Corning will also unveil what it calls its “Photonics Market-Access Platform,” which may offer insight into its roadmap for fiber replacing copper inside server racks , not just connecting them. Finally, while still relatively small, Corning’s solar business is growing fast and becoming an increasing point of emphasis for management. It certainly helps to have diversification away from the data center, so this will likely get some time in the sun at the investor day too. CEO Wendell Weeks will be joining Jim Cramer on “Mad Money” on Wednesday night. 3. Jobs, jobs, jobs: The usual slate of monthly labor market reports is due out. It kicks off Tuesday with the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), which is used to gauge the tightness of the jobs market; a very tight labor market can be a source of inflation, but that’s not a major risk right now. Keep in mind: the JOLTS report operates on a slight lag, though, so Tuesday’s data will cover the month of March. The week’s other big releases — ADP’s private payroll survey and the government’s official nonfarm payroll report — are for April. On Wednesday morning, economists polled by FactSet expect ADP to show job gains of 95,000 in April. For the nonfarm report on Friday morning, the consensus is for 60,000 additions. As Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said last week , the labor market has showed “more and more signs of stability.” We’ll look for more of those signs in the upcoming batch of data. Here’s a recap of Monday’s key moments. 1. Stocks surged Monday after President Donald Trump said the U.S. and Iran had “productive” discussions in recent days about a resolution to the Middle East conflict, and that he was halting strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure. That drove the three major averages up roughly 2% and pushed international oil benchmark Brent crude down 10% to $100 per barrel. Within our portfolio, Qnity Electronics rallied over 5%, among the largest gainers in the S & P 500 . Capital One , an economically sensitive stock, climbed almost 3%, as the fall in oil prices provides relief to consumers. On the tech side, Broadcom and Nvidia roughly 4% and 1.5%, respectively. The market ended last week firmly oversold at minus 7 on the S & P Short Range Oscillator , our trusted momentum indicator. Jim Cramer believes instead of selling into the bounce, “I personally want things to let ride” because of the fast changes in investor psychology. At the same time, Director of Portfolio Analysis Jeff Marks mentioned that for investors looking to raise cash, booking some gains is rational. We have ample cash at the Club, though. 2. Another Club outperformer on Monday was GE Vernova , whose shares were up 5% and set a fresh 52-week high of nearly $921 during the session. A bullish note from Morgan Stanley added fuel to the rally in the gas turbine maker’s shares. The analysts raised their price target on the stock to $960 from $871 and reiterated their buy-equivalent rating. The firm said continued strong AI-related demand is pushing gas turbine prices even higher, which is good for GE Vernova’s margins. Jim noted that GE Vernova’s gas turbines are sold out for years. Morgan Stanley added that the company’s electrification business — home to products like transformers and switchgear, which help distribute the electricity its turbines generate across the grid — will support “incremental medium-term growth.” 3. Jim said some investors might’ve been too quick to write off Apple’s business in China following a pair of Wall Street research notes. Bank of America said its supply chain checks suggest Apple will introduce its first foldable iPhone this year, with analysts expecting higher demand from China. In a separate note, Morgan Stanley said its late 2025 survey found upgrade intention rates in China reaching all-time highs. Analysts also said interest in the foldable iPhone was surprisingly high, especially in China. “We kind of give up on China – we’re really kind of missing the point of one of the most major markets,” Jim said. In its latest quarterly earnings report , Apple’s China business showed strength after some recent challenges. 4. Stocks covered in Monday’s rapid fire at the end of the video were: Synopsys , Venture Global , and MongoDB . (Jim Cramer’s Charitable Trust is long Q, COF, AVGO, NVDA, GEV, AAPL, GLW. See here for a full list of the stocks.) As a subscriber to the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer, you will receive a trade alert before Jim makes a trade.
