Elon Musk’s net worth has soared to an eye-popping $749 billion—now larger than the combined market capitalisation of India’s four biggest listed companies: Reliance Industries ($236 billion), HDFC Bank ($184 billion), Bharti Airtel ($142 billion) and Tata Consultancy Services ($132 billion). The dramatic jump came late Friday after a key legal victory restored a massive Tesla compensation package to the billionaire entrepreneur and Tesla CEO.

According to the Forbes Billionaires Index, Musk’s fortune surged after the Delaware Supreme Court reinstated Tesla stock options worth $139 billion, overturning a lower court ruling that had voided the award last year. The options were part of Musk’s landmark 2018 pay package, which was initially valued at $56 billion.

In 2024, a Delaware court had struck down the compensation deal, calling it “unfathomable”, reported Reuters. On Friday, however, the Supreme Court ruled that the decision to rescind the package was improper and inequitable, effectively clearing the way for the pay plan to be restored in full.

The ruling caps a banner week for Musk. Earlier, he became the first individual in history to cross $600 billion in net worth, amid reports that his aerospace venture SpaceX could be headed for a public listing. Separately, Tesla shareholders in November approved a $1 trillion compensation framework for Musk—the largest corporate pay plan ever—backing his push to reposition the electric-vehicle maker as an AI and robotics powerhouse.

With the latest surge, Musk’s wealth now exceeds that of Google co-founder Larry Page, the world’s second-richest person, by nearly $500 billion, according to Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires List.

Musk’s rise to extraordinary wealth began early. In 1995, in his early twenties, he co-founded Zip2, a software company that helped newspapers take city guides online, Fortune reported. The startup was sold to Compaq for $307 million just four years later. He followed this with X.com, an online payments firm launched in 1999, which later merged with Cofinity, the parent of PayPal. In 2002, eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion—cementing Musk’s place among Silicon Valley’s most influential entrepreneurs.

He founded SpaceX in 2002, which has since become a central pillar of his wealth. He joined Tesla as an early investor in 2004 and took over as CEO in 2008. In 2016, Musk launched Neuralink and founded The Boring Company. His most controversial bet came in 2022, when he acquired Twitter—later rebranded as X—for $44 billion.

From the courtroom to the boardroom, it was a big week for tech investors.

The resolution of Google’s antitrust case led to sharp rallies for Alphabet and Apple. Broadcom shareholders cheered a new $10 billion customer. And Tesla’s stock was buoyed by a freshly proposed pay package for CEO Elon Musk.

Add it up, and the U.S. tech industry’s eight trillion-dollar companies gained a combined $420 billion in market cap this week, lifting their total value to $21 trillion, despite a slide in Nvidia shares.

Those companies now account for roughly 36% of the S&P 500, a proportion so great by historical standards that Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices, told CNBC by email, “there are no comparisons.”

There was a certain irony to this week’s gains.

Alphabet’s 9% jump on Wednesday was directly tied to the U.S. government effort to diminish the search giant’s market control, which was part of a years-long campaign to break up Big Tech. Since 2020, Google, Apple, Amazon and Meta have all been hit with antitrust allegations by the Department of Justice or Federal Trade Commission.

A year ago, Google lost to the DOJ, a result viewed by many as the most-significant antitrust decision for the tech industry since the case against Microsoft more than two decades earlier. But in the remedies ruling this week, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta said Google won’t be forced to sell its Chrome browser despite its loss in court and instead handed down a more limited punishment, including a requirement to share search data with competitors.

The decision lifted Apple along with Alphabet, because the companies can stick with an arrangement that involves Google paying Apple billions of dollars per year to be the default search engine on iPhones. Alphabet rose more than 10% for the week and Apple added 3.2%, helping boost the Nasdaq 1.1%.

Analysts at Wedbush Securities wrote in a note after the decision that the ruling “removed a huge overhang” on Google’s stock and a “black cloud worry” that hung over Apple. Further, they said it clears the path for the companies to pursue a bigger artificial intelligence deal involving Gemini, Google’s AI models.

“This now lays the groundwork for Apple to continue its deal and ultimately likely double down on more AI related partnerships with Google Gemini down the road,” the analysts wrote.

Mehta explained that a major factor in his decision was the emergence of generative AI, which has become a much more competitive market than traditional search and has dramatically changed the market dynamics.

New players like OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity have altered Google’s dominance, Mehta said, noting that generative AI technologies “may yet prove to be game changers.”

On Friday, Alphabet investors shrugged off a separate antitrust matter out of Europe. The company was hit with a 2.95-billion-euro ($3.45 billion) fine from European Union regulators for anti-competitive practices in its advertising technology business.

While OpenAI was an indirect catalyst for Google and Apple this week, it was more directly tied to the huge rally in Broadcom’s stock.

Following Broadcom’s better-than-expected earnings report on Thursday, CEO Hock Tan told analysts that his chipmaker had secured a $10 billion contract with a new customer, which would be the company’s fourth large AI client.

Several analysts said the new customer is OpenAI, and the Financial Times reported on a partnership between the two companies.

Broadcom is the newest entrant into the trillion-dollar club, thanks to the company’s custom chips for AI, already used by Google, Meta and TikTok parent ByteDance. With Its 13% jump this week, the stock is now up 120% in the past year, lifting Broadcom’s market cap to around $1.6 trillion.

“The company is firing on all cylinders with clear line of sight for growth supported by significant backlog,” analysts at Barclays wrote in a note, maintaining their buy recommendation and lifting their price target on the stock.

For the other giant AI chipmaker, the past week wasn’t so good.

Nvidia shares fell more than 4% in the holiday-shortened week, the worst performance among the megacaps. There was no apparent negative news for Nvidia, but the stock has now dropped for four consecutive weeks.

Still, Nvidia remains the largest company by market cap, valued at over $4 trillion, with its stock up 56% in the past 12 months.

Microsoft also fell this week and is on an extended slide, dropping for five straight weeks. Shares are still up 21% over the last 12 months.

On the flipside, Tesla has been the laggard in the group. Shares of the electric vehicle maker are down 13% this year due to a multi-quarter sales slump that reflects rising competition from lower-cost Chinese manufacturers and an aging lineup of EVs.

But Tesla shares climbed 5% this week, sparked mostly by gains on Friday after the company said it wants investors to approve a pay plan for Musk that could be worth up to almost $1 trillion.

The payouts, split into 12 tranches, would require Tesla to see significant value appreciation, starting with the first award that won’t kick in until the company almost doubles its market cap to $2 trillion.

Tesla Chairwoman Robyn Denholm told CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin the plan was designed to keep Musk, the world’s richest person, “motivated and focused on delivering for the company.”

As crypto assets gain traction in the dynamic financial sector, Ethereum continues to prove its strong position among the leading assets in the world. With its recent price surge, ETH’s market cap has risen sharply over the past few days, surpassing the market value of several major financial institutions.

Another Major Milestone For Ethereum

Ethereum appears to be in a bullish state as it slowly approaches the key $4,000 price mark following a recent bounce. Meanwhile, the second-largest cryptocurrency asset has now surpassed the market capitalization of numerous significant assets, marking a new turning point in its ascent up the global financial ladder.

In a recent post shared by Whale Insider on the X (formerly Twitter) platform, the expert reported that ETH is now more valuable than financial giants HSBC and American Express in terms of market cap. ETH’s rise in market value, driven by a surge in price, demonstrates the increasing power of decentralized technology over conventional finance.

This most recent accomplishment highlights a more significant change in the way markets are starting to assess the value of cryptocurrency assets. Furthermore, the development also solidifies ETH’s place among the most valuable assets in the world.

The latest milestone comes after ETH surpassed other leading financial giants such as Goldman Sachs and Bank of China about a week ago. As decentralized technology becomes more popular in the global economy, Ethereum may be at the forefront of the movement.

ETH’s Open Interest Skyrockets To A New Level

While ETH’s price is surging, large investors, also known as whales, are steadily accumulating the altcoin like never before. Ted Pillows, a crypto investor and partner of OKX crypto exchange, reported the wave of accumulation, reflecting strong optimism toward ETH’s long-term prospects.

This development is evidenced by the recent surge in Ethereum CME Futures Open Interest, which has surged to $7.85 billion, marking its highest level ever. According to the expert, this is the biggest institutional posture for ETH that has ever been documented.

Pillows considers this rise in CME open interest as a pivotal moment for ETH, stating that “institutions don’t gamble; they accumulate with conviction.” Looking at the chart, the expert claims the setup appears to be ideal for ETH’s next explosive move.

The Food and Drug Administration is making it easier for people to simultaneously test themselves for COVID-19 and the flu at home.

The agency this week authorized the Healgen Scientific’s Rapid Check COVID-19/Flu A&B Antigen Test for home use without a prescription. While other at-home combination tests that can detect both COVID-19 and influenza already exist, they are currently available only under emergency-use authorization.

The Healgen test is the first combined home COVID and flu test authorized to be marketed outside emergency use.

“As we enter this year’s annual flu season with respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19 on many of our minds, our ability to detect these pathogens effectively and efficiently can be impactful on our daily lives,” Dr. Michelle Tarver, acting director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said in a statement on Monday. “Today’s authorization expands the options for individuals with respiratory symptoms to receive information about their health from the comfort of their home.”

Similar to other virus test kits on the market, the Healgen product entails using a nasal swab sample to detect if it shows the presence of proteins from SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) or influenza A and B (the two most common flu strains). At-home test results for both COVID-19 and flu appear in approximately 15 minutes, according to the FDA.

The Healgen test is for self-use by individuals 14 years or older, or for young children aged 2 years and older when administered by an adult. Based on an FDA analysis, the test correctly identified 99% of negative and 92% of positive SARS-CoV-2 samples; 99.9% of negative Flu A and B samples; and 92.5% and 90.5% of positive Flu A and Flu B samples, respectively.

“As with all rapid antigen tests, which generally have lower sensitivity than molecular tests, there is a risk of false negative test results,” the FDA stated, adding that individuals with ongoing symptoms should follow up with a health care provider.

Gotham Advanced Media and Entertainment, the joint venture between MSG Networks and the YES Network, is launching a new app in the fall that will air local games for seven New York area teams.

The package announced Wednesday is believed to be the first time that two regional sports networks have combined their apps into a bundled option.

The Gotham Sports app will launch ahead of the NBA and NHL seasons. Locals will be able to watch the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres, Brooklyn Nets and New York Yankees with a subscription.

The Gotham Package that gives access to all of those teams will cost $359.99 annually and $41.99 monthly, almost identical to the monthly price of Fox, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery‘s joint Venu streaming service that was blocked with a temporary injunction earlier this month.

Customers who watch only some of those teams can also purchase access to just MSG+ or the YES App services for $29.99 and $24.99 monthly, respectively. If they already have MSG Networks and YES Network via their pay-TV subscription, they will get Gotham Sports App’s services for no extra fee.

“With the increased fragmentation of outlets carrying fan favorite sports programming, The Gotham Sports App allows fans of our teams one easy access point for New York area sporting events from MSG Networks and the YES Network,” MSG Networks President and CEO Andrea Greenberg said in a press release.

Notably, SportsNet New York — the regional sports network that airs the New York Mets — is not included in this joint venture. It is only available via FuboTV, DirecTV stream and online login for people who pay for cable.

Sterling Entertainment Enterprises, Comcast and Charter co-own SportsNet New York.

The regional sports networks business has undergone dramatic changes in recent years. Boston’s local cable network that aired Red Sox and Bruins games launched the first stand-alone regional streaming service in 2022, and other markets have followed.

Diamond Sports Group, the biggest owner of regional sports networks, filed for bankruptcy in March 2023, leading many professional teams across leagues to change the way they air their games.

A handful of NBA, WNBA and NHL teams have turned to local broadcasters, most recently the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks.

Some MLB teams have opted to have their games produced by the league.

The Gotham Sports App is not the first regional sports streaming option residents of the greater New York area have had. YES Network and MSG Networks both launched separate streaming services last year, and customers who only want one of the networks’ services and not the combined package can still pay a cheaper rate.

Not all the new regional sports streaming services follow the subscription model. The NHL’s Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks both announced their games would be locally aired on Victory+, a free, ad-supported streaming service owned by A Parent Media Co.

Both teams previously had their local games carried by a regional sports network owned by Diamond Sports.

Here is what Disney reported compared with what Wall Street expected, according to LSEG:

Earnings per share: $1.39 adjusted vs. $1.19 expected

Revenue: $23.16 billion vs. $23.07 billion expected

The company’s total segment operating income increased 19% to $4.225 billion compared with the same period last year, led by the positive results for Disney’s entertainment unit, particularly streaming.

Disney’s combined streaming business, which consists of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, turned a profit for the first time — and it happened a quarter earlier than the company had expected.

Executives on Wednesday’s earnings call touted the progress of Disney’s streaming business toward profitability, a goal for all media companies as they look to chase customers switching to streaming. CEO Bob Iger also praised the recent successes of the company’s film and TV slates as propelling that business forward.

The combined streaming business posted an operating profit of $47 million compared with a loss of $512 million in the same quarter last year. However, without ESPN+, the direct-to-consumer streaming unit reported a loss of $19 million.

Meanwhile, in May, Disney highlighted a slightly different metric, noting that Disney+ and Hulu together turned a profit, but when combined with ESPN+, the streaming businesses suffered a loss.

Disney recently changed how it reports its segments, with ESPN falling under its sports unit, and Disney+ and Hulu being counted as part of the direct-to-consumer entertainment segment.

Disney+ Core subscribers — which excludes Disney+ Hotstar in India and other countries in the region — increased by 1% to 118.3 million, despite the company’s earlier guidance that it wouldn’t add new customers during the fiscal third quarter. Total Hulu subscribers grew 2% to 51.1 million.

Revenue for the entertainment segment was up 4% to $10.58 billion, driven largely by subscription revenue growth due to price increases and customer growth for Disney+ Core. Revenue for the traditional TV networks was down 7%.

The company announced further streaming price hikes on Tuesday.

“We’re seeing growth in consumption and the popularity of our offerings, which gives us the pricing leverage we believe we have,” Iger said on Wednesday’s call, noting that Disney hasn’t seen customers losses it would “consider significant” when it has increased prices in the past.

In addition to adding TV and film content to its streaming platforms, Iger said Disney plans to make advancements to technology features on its platforms, as well as add live channels in the upcoming months. Iger also noted Disney’s upcoming crackdown on password sharing, following Netflix‘s lead in a bid to grow profitability.

He said the various bundles that Disney is partaking in — from its own services to teaming up with Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox Corp. on other bundles — are an effort to stem subscriber losses.

“I feel very bullish about the future of this business,” Iger said during the call. “We’re not saying much more about it, except you can expect it to grow nicely in fiscal 2025.”

Disney’s overall revenue increased 4% to $23.155 billion compared with the same period last year.

Revenue for ESPN’s domestic and international business — excluding Star India revenue — increased by 5%, largely due to a big uptick of 17% in domestic advertising, as well as growth in subscription revenue. The ad market has started to rebound in recent quarters, particularly for digital and streaming. ESPN’s operating income was up 4% to $1.09 billion.

Disney CFO Hugh Johnston said on the call Wednesday that the ad market is “really healthy and strong for us,” namely because of Disney’s live sports portfolio and streaming services.

“The portfolio is working well,” Johnston said in an interview. “Yes there was softness in the domestic parks, but the entertainment division’s profit tripled in the quarter.”

Theme parks ‘slowdown’

While Disney’s entertainment and sports divisions drove earnings, the U.S. theme parks business was impacted by slowing consumer demand and inflation.

Executives on Wednesday’s earnings call said flat attendance, particularly at U.S. parks, is likely to carry over the new few quarters.

“We saw a slight moderation in demand, I certainly wouldn’t call it a significant change,” Johnston said. “I would just call this a bit of a slowdown that’s being more than offset by the entertainment business.”

Revenue for the overall experiences unit, which includes domestic and international parks and experiences, as well as consumer products, was up 2% to $8.386 billion.

Operating income for U.S. parks was down 6%, while international parks operating income was up 2%. The company attributed the decrease in operating income at the domestic parks to higher costs driven by inflation, as well as increased technology spending and new guest offerings.

This carried over from the previous quarter, when the Disneyland Resort in California was under pressure with lower profits, with executives citing similar reasons.

Last month Comcast‘s earnings were weighed down by its Universal theme parks, which the company attributed to increased competition from cruises and international tourism. Despite this, Comcast executives said they remained “bullish” on the business, especially with a new theme park opening in 2025.

Until recently, theme parks had been a big boost on earnings for these media companies, and in Disney’s case a key profit driver. Disney has pledged to spend roughly $60 billion on its theme parks over the next decade.

On Wednesday, Johnston said the company wasn’t prepared to give long-term guidance on theme parks as it’s unclear how quickly the future investments will “manifest” for Disney’s earnings.

“We wouldn’t be making capital investments in an accelerated way if we didn’t expect to accelerate growth,” Johnston said on Wednesday’s call.

— CNBC’s Julia Boorstin contributed to this report.

Investors wondering where the S&P 500 is headed, at least for the next month or so, will want to pay attention to three key days this week.

Between Tuesday and Thursday, five Big Tech companies with a combined market value of more than $10 trillion will report earnings: Microsoft Corp., Alphabet Inc., Meta Platforms Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and Apple Inc. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve will issue its decision on interest rates, followed by Chair Jerome Powell’s press conference where he’s expected to discuss the outlook ahead.

The stakes couldn’t be much higher, with the S&P 500 Index pushing deeper into record territory on bets that central bankers are poised to began easing monetary policies and tech behemoths like Microsoft getting more valuable by the day.

“Tech disproportionately moved the market last year and big tech continues to have the biggest earnings power, so the results will be crucial for the markets,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer at Independent Advisor Alliance.

After a shaky start to the year, the S&P 500 is rising again and on pace for a third monthly advance that’s added more than 18% since late October, when the index hit a near-term low before Fed officials started signaling that rate hikes were over.

The rally is again being led by megacaps including Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon.com, Nvidia and Meta Platforms, which were responsible for a majority of the index’s 24% gain last year as investors became captivated by the possibilities of artificial intelligence services. The so-called Magnificent Seven, which also includes Tesla Inc., just hit a record 29% of the S&P 500 despite a slump in shares of the electric-vehicle maker that’s erased more than $200 billion in market value just this month.

AI Booming

Microsoft and Alphabet will kick off earnings on Tuesday after markets close. The two companies are among the best positioned to benefit from the AI boom after investing heavily in the field for years. Microsoft has been adding the features to its suite of software products, and investors are betting that AI will soon start boosting profit and sales growth.

On Wednesday, the focus shifts to the end of the Fed’s January meeting, where it’s expected to hold interest rates steady for a fourth-consecutive meeting. Traders will be primarily focused on what Powell and other policymakers have to say about the timing of easing. Recent data showing inflation continuing to recede and resilient US economic growth suggest central bankers won’t be in a hurry to cut interest rates.

Apple is the biggest draw on Thursday, when Amazon and Facebook-owner Meta Platforms also report in the afternoon. The iPhone maker has been dogged by concerns about revenue growth and is expected to report its first sales expansion in four quarters.

Read more: Apple veteran instrumental to iPhone development leaves for electric-vehicle maker Rivian: ‘Now is the time for me to move on’

With most of the megacaps in record territory, there are concerns that investors are over exposed to just a handful of stocks, which could open the door for some pain if quarterly results underwhelm.

The Magnificent Seven stocks were again named the most crowded trade in a Bank of America survey of fund managers, according to a research note published by the bank last week.

No Protection

Still, traders aren’t rushing to scoop up hedges against declines, according to options market data.

A gauge of projected price swings in Apple in the next three months is hovering near the lowest level in six years. Traders expect a 3.3% move in the stock in either direction a day after the results, which would be among the narrowest post-earnings swings in two years.

Projected three-month volatility in Meta Platforms, which more than quadrupled since its November 2022 nadir, is at the lowest in two years. The cost of protection against a 10% decline in Microsoft in the next month is hovering near the lowest level since August relative to the cost of options that profit from a similar rally.

Tesla demonstrated the risks last week after missing fourth-quarter earnings estimates and warning that its sales growth would be “notably lower” in 2024. The stock tumbled 12% the following day, its biggest drop in a year.

Microsoft recently overtook Apple as the world’s most valuable company with a market value above $3 trillion. The rally has made the stock even more expensive, at 33 times profits projected over the next 12 months compared with an average of 24 times over the past decade.

To Jason Benowitz, senior portfolio manager at CI Roosevelt, there’s no doubt the megacap trade is crowded. But that doesn’t mean the stocks can’t continue to rally with economic growth slowing and easing financial conditions.

“There’s a good reason for the crowded trade,” he said. “The environment is good for them.”

Christine Lopez is turning 49 later this year, which she says is pretty horrifying. She and her husband have been married for 17 years, and they’ve lived together in New York, Austin, and San Antonio, where they currently rent a 2,700 square-foot, four bedroom house for $3,200 a month. They have two kids.

They’ve always rented, never owned, and don’t seem to see that ever changing. At one point, owning a home felt like maybe it could be within reach, but now “it’s impossible,” Lopez told Fortune, adding that she just doesn’t see it happening.

“I mean, we make good money,” Lopez said, noting that together they make $275,000 per year—with her managing creative operations for an advertising agency and her husband, who also works in advertising, but does so in-house for a well-known company. Still, she says, “it all goes out the door.” In addition to providing for their kids, she and her partner help his parents’ out with some of their expenses, whether that be healthcare or home repairs. On top of that, they’ve both had to pay off their student loans.

Lopez earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami and her master’s from New York University. She says she’s paid off $160,000 of her student loans, and that’s not even taking into account the interest that’s racked up. Lopez has $3,500 left that she says she’ll have paid off by December, which she’s very excited about. But her husband is not quite done yet. Lopez says that he’s paid off over $89,000 and has $20,000 more to go.

“Our biggest hurdle is [the] down payment…We don’t have much available to put in savings, it would take us forever to get to that,” Lopez said, adding later, “there’s really not much to save, and what we do save is not enough to make a dent in something like a housing down payment.”

Because they’re renting, they can afford to live in, what she calls, a good neighborhood with good schools, which isn’t a trade-off they’re willing to make. The average home value in San Antonio is $265,322, per Zillow, which is less than their household income. Still, San Antonio’s home prices have jumped almost 39% since March 2020 (the onset of the Pandemic Housing Boom). To put 10% down on a home worth as much as the city’s average, they’d need to have more than $26,000 saved; to put 20% down, they’d need around $53,000 saved. And let’s not forget that’s just the average home value—not necessarily the price of homes Lopez would like to buy.

Even before they moved to San Antonio, and they were living in Austin, they watched as homeownership became more and more out of reach for them, as home prices went up. Although the average home value in Austin is down over the past year, sitting at $567,255, home prices in the city have gone up 42% since March 2020.

Housing affordability is deteriorating, reaching levels unseen since the height of the housing bubble, with mortgage rates that have doubled, following a 40% increase in housing prices on a national level.

Lopez said she doesn’t see them ever owning a home “unless we win the lottery or something crazy like that.”

“It’s like how did I fail at this? We both make good money, and we still can’t manage to do this relatively simple thing,” Lopez said.

She and her partner aren’t the only high-earners that are renting instead of buying. Take this couple that, at the time, lived in Los Angeles and together made around $225,000 annually, but to them, the idea of ever owning a home there was “hilarious.” Then there’s a business owner earning around $200,000 per year, living and renting in New York City because she feels like she can’t afford to buy. Buying a home in Los Angeles and New York City has always been, at least to some degree, unaffordable for a lot of people. But it seems like this lack of affordability is beginning to penetrate middle markets.

“I mean, honestly, it’s embarrassing,” Lopez said. “It’s like, well, what did we do wrong?”

By the time they save up enough money, Lopez says their kids would be in college. And not only would they no longer need the space of a house, but they’d do everything they can to help their kids with that next step, which means they’d have even more expenses.

“We don’t want them in college to struggle with what we did,” she said. “So we’re going to pay as much as humanly possible upfront and then we’ll take on as much loans as we can ourselves, so that they’re not facing down the barrel of this.”

Lopez remembers working for $8 an hour during school to pay for her living expenses because her parents didn’t help her financially, and they still don’t. She says it’s because they’ve always thought of her as a hard worker, someone that can do it on their own.

She’s pretty much given up on ever owning a home, even though her husband still would ideally like to own property one day because it’s something they can pass down or even use to fund their retirement—although she says: “we’re literally going to work till we die.” Maybe they’ll move back to New York and rent a small apartment in the city once their kids are old enough, Lopez says.

“I’ve just kind of gotten it out of my personality to ever be the person that would own a home,” Lopez said.

“Barbenheimer” is off to a red-hot start at the domestic box office.

One-half of the viral internet meme, “Barbie,” snared $22.3 million in Thursday night preview tickets, the most of any film released so far in 2023 – topping the $17.4 million bow of Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

The R-rated, three-hour “Oppenheimer,” meanwhile, tallied $10.5 million from Thursday showings. That’s in line with big releases such as 2017’s “Wonder Woman” and this year’s live action “The Little Mermaid.”

Heading into the weekend, Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” is expected to capture upwards of $140 million, if not more, over its first three days in theaters. Meanwhile, Universal’s “Oppenheimer” appears destined to snare at least $50 million, with some box office analysts expecting it could top $60 million.

The two films could together generate $200 million over their opening frame. With additional ticket sales from “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “Sound of Freedom,” it could be the highest-grossing weekend of the year so far.

This excitement is much needed for the domestic box office after a string of recently released big-budget movies, such as “The Flash” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” fell short of expectations.

Major movie chains have indicated that ticket sales are strong for both films this weekend and additional shows have been added to accommodate demand.

Some 40,000 AMC Theatre loyalty program members have purchased tickets to see Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day and the National Association of Theatre owners project that more than 200,000 moviegoers will attend same-day viewings of the two films.

Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of NBCUniversal and CNBC.

The outcome of the Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability, or JWCC, effort is in line with the U.S. Defense Department’s effort to rely on multiple providers of remotely operated infrastructure technology, as opposed to relying on a single company, a strategy promoted during the Trump Administration.

A Department of Defense spokesperson told CNBC by email that “JWCC is a multiple award procurement composed of four contracts with a shared ceiling of $9 Billion.”

An increasing tally of businesses have also sought to rely on more than one cloud provider. In some cases they rely on specialized capabilities on one and the majority of front-end and back-end workloads on another. At other times, they come down to cost. Having more than one cloud might make organizations more confident that they can withstand service disruptions brought on by outages.

Originally, the Pentagon had awarded the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, or JEDI, to Microsoft in 2019. A legal battle ensued as Amazon, the top player in the cloud infrastructure market, challenged the Pentagon’s decision. Oracle challenged the Pentagon’s pick as well.

In 2020, the Pentagon’s watchdog conducted a review and ruled that there was no evidence to conclude that the Trump Administration had intervened in the process of awarding the contract. Months later the Pentagon announced it would stick with Microsoft for the JEDI deal.

Last year the Pentagon changed its approach, asking for bids from Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Oracle to address cloud needs. But the General Services Administration stated at the time that only Amazon and Microsoft seemed to be able to meet the Pentagon’s requirements.

Wednesday’s result is a boon in particular for Oracle, which analysts don’t see in the top tier of companies offering cloud-based computing services.
All four of the technology companies have won indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity, or IDIQ, contracts, meaning that they can involve an indefinite amount of services for a specific period of time.

“The purpose of this contract is to provide the Department of Defense with enterprise-wide globally available cloud services across all security domains and classification levels, from the strategic level to the tactical edge,” the Defense Department said.

Correction: A prior version of this story said each company was awarded a contract of up to $9 billion, but that number represents the combined total for the four.
