A suspect arrested in possession of a foreign-manufactured firearm and two live rounds of ammunition has been remanded until 12 February 2026, in accordance with an order issued today (30) by the Wattala Magistrate.

The arrest was made following a special search operation carried out by a team of police officers in the Pamunugama area, based on received information.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police Kamal Ariyawansa, Director of the Central Crime Investigation Bureau, and led by Officer in Charge of Homicides & Organized Crime Investigation Division, M.G. Chanaka. 

Further investigations into the incident are currently underway.

Two suspects have been arrested by the Colombo South Criminal Investigation Bureau with a foreign-manufactured revolver. 

The arrests were made yesterday (17) during a raid carried out in the Pattiyawatta area of Maradana, following a tip-off received by police.

During the operation, a suspect was arrested with a revolver-type firearm manufactured overseas and 2 grams and 500 milligrams of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “Ice.”

The suspect has been identified as a 30-year-old resident of Colombo 10, police said.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the suspect had handed over a stock of live ammunition to another individual, police said.

Accordingly, officers had arrested a second suspect in possession of 75 live 9mm cartridges and 45 live T-56 rounds.

The second suspect has been identified as a 32-year-old resident of Colombo 10.

A T-56 firearm and two magazines with ammunition recovered from a car abandoned at Pahalawatte in Ragama, Police stated.

A suspect has been arrested for the possession of a T-56 assault rifle, two magazines, and 45 rounds of ammunition by officers of the Ampara Division Criminal Investigation Unit.

The arrest was made in the Saadamulla area within the Batapola Police Division, in Elpitiya following a tip-off received by the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of the Eastern Province, Waruna Jayasundara.

The suspect has been identified as a 45-year-old resident of Namal Uyana, Saadamulla, police said. 

Police stated that the suspect is a close associate of an organized underworld figure.

Further investigations have revealed that the seized firearm was allegedly intended to be used in several planned murders.

Batapola Police are continuing investigations into the incident.

A total of 715 rounds of various ammunition, including for T-56 weapons, recovered from the Moragahakanda Reservoir during a special operation, police stated.

Officers of the Western North Crime Division, in collaboration with the Special Task Force (STF), recovered a cache of ammunition and grenades today (06) from the property in Thalawa, Middeniya in Hambantota District, where chemicals allegedly used in the production of ‘Ice’ (crystal methamphetamine) had previously been discovered.

According to police, the recovery was made from a newly dug ditch near a cassava plantation in the said property. 

The items seized include five foreign-manufactured hand grenades, 17 rounds of T-56 ammunition, and three bullets used for 12-bore firearms, said police.
