“Lauderdale has been a star for us,” JetBlue President Marty St. George said this month about Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Capitalizing on growth at the Broward County airport is key for JetBlue as it revamps its network and rolls out more high-end options like a domestic first-class cabin to return to profitability. Its last profitable quarter was two years ago.

JetBlue was looking to expand in Fort Lauderdale even before Spirit Airlines, the South Florida-based discounter that was No. 1 at the airport, collapsed on May 2 under the weight of debt and years of snowballing problems.

JetBlue is now the top carrier with 36% market share by capacity at the airport, according to a Cirium tally of 2026 capacity, up from about 24% a year earlier. From May to June of this year, JetBlue added 5% more capacity, while big competitors pulled back in the Florida offseason, according to Cirium.

The carrier has about 106 flights scheduled a day for this year on average, up from about 68 a day last year, Cirium data shows.

Just hours after Spirit’s collapse, JetBlue and other airlines laid out their own travel plans, adding flights to fill the void at Fort Lauderdale.

JetBlue raised its revenue forecast for the year on June 1, citing strong demand.

“I’m feeling very, very bullish about how customers have responded to JetBlue’s growth,” St. George said.

JetBlue says it’s planning for even more growth as additional gates become available after Spirit’s demise. Some of those gates are still tied up in bankruptcy court.

JetBlue’s plan is to operate about 150 daily flights at Fort Lauderdale in the peak winter months, which include Presidents Day weekend and some school breaks, a schedule that will put it on par with JetBlue’s Boston Logan International Airport hub, its largest after New York.

The plan includes more international destinations leaving from Fort Lauderdale and a focus on premium air travel.

St. George said the carrier has been reviewing sites for a lounge — which would be the third in its network — at Fort Lauderdale to cater to those customers. It already has lounges at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and in Boston.

“It is unclear right now where we would put a lounge,” he said. “The airport folks, I think, are equally motivated to have a lounge down there. Certainly, given the size of our operation and the number of premium customers going in and out of Fort Lauderdale, I think [it makes] a lot of sense, we just have to find the right location.”

The big competitive threat lies about 26 miles south, at Miami International Airport, an American Airlines hub that dwarfs Fort Lauderdale. Both airports, though Miami is much larger, are major hubs for leisure customers as well as those visiting friends and relatives in Latin America and the Caribbean.

“There’s a good number of customers for [whom] Miami is the right airport, who will never leave Miami, and we’re not planning on converting those customers,” St. George said. “I do think that as we get more service in Fort Lauderdale as a bigger breadth of destinations, that utility of Lauderdale Airport will go up.”

American on Friday said it plans to operate a record 100 destinations to the Caribbean, Mexico and other airports in Latin America from the U.S., with 77 of them leaving from Miami, including a new flight to Maracaibo, Venezuela, from July 14 and to Cap-Haitien, Haiti, starting Nov. 1.

JetBlue, for its part, announced Fort Lauderdale to Caracas service recently, as carriers build up flights. American in January announced it would resume resume service to Venezuela from the United States for the first time since 2019, weeks after the U.S. captured Venezuela’s president.

The airline announced Tuesday it would install Starlink on about 500 of its narrow-body Airbus planes, like the A321neo, starting early next year. American spokesman said the carrier doesn’t have immediate plans to change providers on its Boeing fleet, which uses a mix of Viasat and Panasonic.

Delta in March said it would use Amazon Leo for in-flight Wi-Fi for hundreds of jets starting in 2028. United, Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines, which merged with Hawaiian Airlines in 2024, have selected Starlink.

Carriers are battling for higher-spending customers, including by upgrading once-slow, expensive and clunky in-flight internet to higher speeds. They have also been weighing other revenue streams, like personalized ads for travelers.

SpaceX, meanwhile, is preparing to go public in what’s likely to be a record IPO next month. Its connectivity unit, which includes Starlink, posted revenue of $11.39 billion last year, making up 61% of total sales, SpaceX said in a filing for its initial public offering earlier this month.

Higher fuel prices are testing how badly consumers want to travel this summer, whether flying or driving.

Airfare hasn’t been this high since May 2022, when airlines stumbled out of the pandemic with aircraft and employee shortages to face hordes of consumers ready for “revenge travel.” Gasoline is above $4 a gallon and could get closer to $5 a gallon this summer, AAA warned this week.

Jet fuel prices doubled in the span of less than three months this year after the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran, kicking off a conflict that has left a key shipping channel effectively closed.

Domestic round-trip airfares in April averaged $623, the highest in nearly four years, according to data from the Airlines Reporting Corporation, which tracks travel agency ticket sales. Jet fuel is the second-biggest expense for airlines after labor, and carriers say they are increasingly passing those costs along to customers.

Separately, airlines are also trimming their growth plans because of higher fuel costs. Even if a route isn’t cut, fewer flights on certain routes means that customers will have fewer seats to choose from and, with demand robust, that could drive up prices even more.

Spirit Airlines, the most famous budget carrier in the U.S., shut down earlier this month, and partially blamed jet fuel prices for its failure to emerge from near back-to-back bankruptcies. It was the biggest U.S. airline collapse in decades. Other airlines swooped in to snatch up those customers in the aftermath, but the carrier’s demise removes a main purveyor of low fares.

The fuel spikes have set the stage for higher fares and more expensive gas station visits this summer. The start of the peak travel season Memorial Day weekend will be a taste of how much travelers will shell out to fly while everything from groceries to clothing has become more expensive this year.

The Transportation Security Administration said it expects to screen 18.3 million people between Thursday and next Wednesday, compared with the 18.5 million it saw over a similar period last year.

Gasoline price site GasBuddy forecast this week that prices across the U.S. will average $4.48 on Memorial Day, up from $3.14 last year, and that prices could average $4.80 through Labor Day “if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed for a significant portion of the summer.”

Leisure travel intentions in the U.S. were slightly lower in March — at 82.8% compared with 83.1% the same month a year earlier — though they are still relatively high, UBS said in a note Monday.

“We believe the year-over-year moderation in travel intentions this year was likely due to higher jet fuel and other geopolitical concerns,” UBS airline analyst Atul Maheswari wrote. He added that the intent to travel is near the highest points in the past nine years.

The Omaha-based conglomerate disclosed its quarter-end equity holdings in a regulatory filing Friday, offering one of the first looks at the portfolio under new CEO Greg Abel, who took over at the start of the year from legendary investor Warren Buffett.

One of the biggest moves from the latest filing was a sizeable new stake in Delta Air Lines. Berkshire purchased 39.8 million shares in the airline, valued at $2.6 billion at the end of March, making it the company’s 14th largest holding by the end of March. Delta shares jumped more than 3% at one point Monday.

The Delta purchase marked a return to the airline industry for Berkshire. Six years ago, Buffett surprised the market by exiting Berkshire’s entire U.S. airline portfolio, unloading positions worth more than $4 billion in United, American, Southwest and Delta Air Lines. Buffett argued at the time that the pandemic had permanently reshaped consumer habits and travel demand.

Berkshire also initiated a position in Macy’s last quarter. The department store shares climbed more than 1% Monday after the filing revealed Berkshire took a new stake valued at roughly $55 million at the end of the first quarter.

Meanwhile, the conglomerate sold a slew of stocks last quarter, likely as part of an effort to unwind positions tied to departed lieutenant Todd Combs.

The longtime investment manager and Geico chief left for JPMorgan at the end of 2025. Combs had been one of two portfolio managers recruited by Buffett to help oversee Berkshire’s equity portfolio.
Buffett, who stepped down as CEO after more than six decades at the helm, remains chairman of the Omaha, Nebraska-based company and continues to come into the office five days a week.

Buffett recently acknowledged displeasure with the investing backdrop as Berkshire’s cash hoard swells to a record nearing $400 billion.

“It isn’t our ideal surrounding area — or environment, I should say — in terms of deploying cash for Berkshire,” the former CEO said.

Spirit Airlines struggled for years, battered by larger, cash-rich airlines that copied its business model, failed mergers, higher costs and, most recently, a surge in jet fuel prices because of the war in Iran. It then faced the most unforgiving foe: time.

“We just kind of ran out of runway,” CEO Dave Davis said in an interview with CNBC on Monday.

Spirit had hoped to exit bankruptcy, its second in less than a year, in mid-2026. Four days before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran, a conflict that has sent fuel prices skyrocketing, Davis said he and his team were optimistic that the exit strategy could still work. But that was contingent on fuel prices moderating in April.

They didn’t.

“Late March, early April, it became clear that it was going to be tough for us to get through,” Davis said, noting that crude oil prices were above $100 a barrel.

To try to save the company from collapsing, Davis and others inside Spirit talked to the Trump administration about a bailout.

“We got connected with some various folks in government, including [Commerce] Secretary [Howard] Lutnick, through some contacts,” he said. “These guys … particularly Commerce, very eager to help.”

The Trump administration had been working on an offer for a $500 million loan to keep the airline afloat in a plan that could have given the U.S. government an up to 90% stake in the carrier. Bondholders weren’t on board and floated a counter proposal.

“Our bondholders also worked very hard to try to get something done,” Davis said.

The two sides were far apart on deal terms and it was clear by Thursday that it wasn’t going to work.

“I think we just ran out of time,” he said.

Spirit said some 17,000 people, both direct and indirect airline workers, lost their jobs in the airline’s collapse. Other carriers, smelling blood, had been circling for nearly a year if not longer, and within hours of the airline’s collapse were scrambling to both fly ticketed Spirit customers and add to their schedules in the absence left by Spirit’s yellow planes.

Spirit hired longtime airline executive Davis, most recently CFO at Sun Country, a year ago, about a month after the company zipped out of its first bankruptcy. Critics said it avoided bigger changes in that first bankruptcy, like shedding more assets to get costs down.

Last August, the airline filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection again, facing many of the same problems, though it had slashed flights, gotten rid of some of its Airbus jets and furloughed crew members to save cash.

Davis previously worked at Northwest Airlines, which combined with Delta Air Lines in 2008, and also worked at US Airways, which merged with American Airlines in 2013. Along with United Airlines and Southwest Airlines, the four airlines control about 80% of U.S. capacity, after a major wave of consolidation.

More consolidation is likely and “what the lower end of the industry needs,” Davis predicted. He said if Spirit’s planned acquisition by JetBlue Airways wasn’t blocked by a judge two years ago “I believe that we wouldn’t be in the situation we are right now.”

Low-fare airlines for a time were a headache for big legacy carriers, since they swooped into markets and offered eye-catching fares.

“There was no better exemplar of that than Spirit,” Davis said.

But then the big airlines started to copy some of the budget model, offering no-frills basic economy tickets and other add-on fees. That hurt carriers like Spirit, which was profitable in the 2010s but hadn’t turned a profit since 2019.

“Everybody saw the low-cost airlines just taking massive share,” he said. “The shoe was completely on the other foot then, then where it is today.”

He said another benefit the larger airlines have is their huge credit card programs, in which they earn money from banks when customers swipe their credit cards, a business that gives them a bigger cash cushion to weather shocks like high fuel prices.

Davis said in Spirit’s final days he was between Washington, D.C., and the company headquarters in Dania Beach, Florida, trying to get to a deal. Some staff members, including pilots, didn’t get final word about the airline’s last flights until they were getting close to landing Friday night or early Saturday.

“You can’t announce ahead of time that you’re going to shut down,” he said. “What happens is vendors stop working. Fuelers stop fueling. Some crew members probably don’t come in. So then you’ve got airplanes and people and passengers scattered all over the place in foreign countries. It needs to be done in a very orderly way, and it needs to be done all at once.”

Davis said he is staying on at Spirit to oversee the airline’s closure. Leased planes will go back to lessors. Owned ones will get sold. Gates will be overseen by airports and likely used by other airlines. About 130 other employees are set to stay on for that work as well.

When asked if he would stay in the industry, Davis said: “I just love airplanes, and I like the industry, so I’ll probably never leave it, although sometimes it’s very trying and taxing on a person.”

Spirit Airlines shut down overnight. The carrier failed to secure a financial lifeline to continue operating, ending the discount air travel pioneer’s time in the sky, costing some 17,000 jobs and thousands of cheap flights in the market.

“Spirit is winding down all operations,” reads its website as of Saturday morning, replacing the functioning booking homepage that was up for less than 24 hours.

Travelers with Spirit tickets could be understandably rattled. While there have been some U.S. airlines that have shut down in recent years, the budget carrier is larger than most recent airline failures and links major cities like New York, Miami, Detroit, and Los Angeles — and many others in between, including destinations throughout Latin America and the Caribbean — with its Airbus jets.

Here’s what travelers need to know:

You have a Spirit ticket. What should you do?

Spirit said it will automatically refund tickets purchased through the airline with a credit or debit card.

Travelers who booked through a travel agency need to request a refund from the agency. Spirit said that if they used loyalty points, a voucher, or a credit, reimbursement “will be determined at a later date through the bankruptcy process.”

Henry Harteveldt, founder of Atmosphere Research Group, a travel consulting firm, said, however, that the odds of receiving compensation for loyalty point reservations are slim to none.

Would Spirit be able to help you at the airport?

Spirit told customers not to go to the airport.

Spirit’s thousands of employees have lost their jobs, so there won’t be customer service agents to assist them. That could leave passengers with fewer answers than they’d like, but other airlines are saying they will cap fares for customers.

Airlines that offer last-minute fares, likely with some discounts, will be available to travelers at airport ticket counters or other channels.

JetBlue said it will cap fares for affected travelers at $99 for one-way tickets through May 6. Travelers will have to show proof of a Spirit itinerary and call 1-800-JETBLUE. It will also cap fares between Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, Puerto Rico, for new purchases made May 1 through May 8 at $299, a route Spirit flew.

“With major operations in Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, we’re in a unique position to help Spirit customers get where they need to go and ensure flights remain affordable despite greater demand,” said JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty.

Carriers across the board are assisting flight crews in getting home.

Why did Spirit shut down?

Spirit, known for bright yellow planes, low fares and fees for everything else, had been successful for years, but this week it’s been on the brink of liquidation after failing to reach a deal with bondholders for a $500 million government bailout from the Trump administration.

Last year Spirit filed for its second bankruptcy in less than a year, though it’s had a host of problems even before then.

A plan to be acquired by JetBlue was blocked. Rising costs upended its business model. An engine defect grounded dozens of its planes. And, more broadly, upscale travel became more popular with consumers, driving airline profits.

At the same time, big, legacy airlines were selling their own basic economy fares that were similar to what Spirit was offering, but with bigger networks and more perks, like free wi-fi, food and more roomier seat options, as well as lounges.

What does this mean for travel going forward?

Experts have said they expect fares to rise, at least in some markets, if the discounter goes away, even though the carrier has shrunk substantially in recent months.

Airlines have been adding flights since Spirit’s bankruptcy filing last year on some of its routes and at major airports. They’re going to ramp that up.

JetBlue said it will run its largest operation ever out of Fort Lauderdale this summer with 130 daily departures, which it said is 75% more than last year.

It’s planning to add service to the airport from Barranquilla and Cali in Colombia, Baltimore, Charlotte, North Carolina, as well as Detroit, Chicago, Houston, and others.

President Donald Trump said Friday that his administration gave a “final” bailout proposal for Spirit Airlines as the budget carrier could be forced to liquidate without a lifeline.

Talks with bondholders for a government bailout this week have not yielded a deal as of Friday. The Trump administration last month had offered a $500 million loan that could have given the government up to a 90% stake in the Florida-based airline, according to people familiar with the matter who requested anonymity to speak about the discussions.

“If we could do it, we’d do it, but only if it’s a good deal this weekend, because they haven’t gotten a deal looking at it,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday. “I said I’d like to save the jobs but we’ll have an announcement sometime today. … We gave them a final proposal.”

The White House, the Department of Transportation and the Commerce Department didn’t immediate respond to a request for comment.

Spirit declined to comment on liquidation plans. The airline’s lawyer, Marshall Huebner, told a bankruptcy court in New York on April 23 that Spirit’s cash “is not going to last for very much longer.”

The carrier is in its second bankruptcy in less than a year and now has the added challenge of a spike in jet fuel prices amid the Middle East conflict.

United Airlines said the carrier is “preparing to support Spirit customers and employees” if Spirit shuts down and strands crews and passengers, a spokeswoman told CNBC.
Spirit, which pioneered the low-cost budget airline model, has been challenged for years by rising costs, changing consumer tastes and a engine recall. A planned acquisition of Spirit by JetBlue Airways was successfully challenged by the Biden administration two years ago.

The airline had expected to emerge from bankruptcy midyear before the jump in fuel prices.

Spirit flew around 1.7 million U.S. domestic passengers, with a 3.9% market share in the U.S. market, as of February, according to aviation data firm Cirium. That was down from 5.1% market share last year the airline axed flights to cut costs.

Kirby had floated the idea to the Trump administration earlier this year, according to people familiar with the matter who weren’t authorized to discuss the private conversation, in hopes that the combination would mean a big global airline to compete with foreign rivals

American declined to comment on Kirby’s Monday statement.

“I was hoping to pitch that story to American, but they declined to engage and instead responded by publicly closing the door,” Kirby said in his statement Monday. “And without a willing partner, something this big simply can’t get done.”

He said that “American’s public comments make it clear that a merger like this is off the table for the foreseeable future” but outlined his vision for a combined airline.

Kirby reiterated that the country has deficit with foreign airlines that fly more than half of the long-haul seats into the U.S., with most of the customers being Americans.

“The combined scale of United and American would be a better way to compete with foreign carriers,” he said.

President Donald Trump said he was against the idea of a combination last week.

“I don’t like having them merge,” he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Tuesday morning. He said he would, however, like someone to buy struggling discount carrier Spirit but he also suggested that the federal government could “help that one out.”

Spirit and the Trump administration are in advanced talks for a rescue package.

United said it could earn between $7 and $11 a share on an adjusted basis this year, down from its previous forecast of between $12 and $14 a share that it released in January, more than a month before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran.

The carrier, like others, is trimming some of its planned flying this year to reduce costs. Wall Street had already been adjusting its expectations for the year as a result. Analysts polled by LSEG had forecast that United’s adjusted, full-year earnings would be $9.58 a share.

For the second quarter, United forecast adjusted earnings of between $1 and $2 a share. Analysts had expected $2.08 a share for the quarter. United estimated its fuel price would average $4.30 a gallon in the second quarter.

The carrier said it expects its revenue to cover between 40% to 50% of the fuel price increase in the second quarter, as much as 80% in the third and between 85% and 100% by the end of the year.

United reiterated that it is tweaking its schedules to adjust to higher fuel, with capacity in the second half of the year expected to be flat to up about 2% on the year. It grew 3.4% in the first quarter.

Here is what United Airlines reported for the quarter that ended March 31 compared with what Wall Street was expecting, based on estimates compiled by LSEG:

Earnings per share: $1.19 adjusted vs. $1.07 expected

Revenue: $14.61 billion vs. $14.37 billion expected

Revenue overall rose more than 10%, to $14.61 billion, up from the $13.21 billion from a year before.

For the first quarter, United’s net income rose 80% to $699 million, or $2.14 cents a share, compared with net income of $387 million, or $1.16 cents a share, a year earlier. Adjusted for one-time items, United posted earnings per share of $1.19 a share.

Unit revenue was up in every reported segment, including for domestic U.S. flights, where it rose 7.9% to $7.9 billion from a year earlier, signaling strong pricing power in the quarter.

“These are results our employees can be proud of, and they show the resilience of our long-term strategy, even in the face of escalating fuel expense,” CEO Scott Kirby said in an earnings release.

Jet fuel in the U.S. was going for $3.51 a gallon on Monday, down from the high on April 2 of $4.78, but far above the $2.39 on Feb. 27, the day before the first attacks on Iran, according to prices assessed by Platts.

Airline executives have said demand has remained robust even while they have increased fares and checked bag fees as they pass along higher fuel prices to customers. The industry has become more reliant on travelers who are willing to shell out more for flights and bigger seats, and who are less affected by price increases.

Alaska Airlines pulled its 2026 forecast on Monday because of higher fuel prices. It has raised fares about $25, CEO Ben Minicucci told analysts Tuesday.

Merger ambitions?

United CEO Scott Kirby is likely to face questions on the company’s 10:30 a.m. ET earnings call on Wednesday about his ambitions for a merger with another airline.

Kirby floated a potential merger with American Airlines to a Trump administration official earlier this year, according to a person familiar with the matter, but President Donald Trump said he was against the idea.

“I don’t like having them merge,” he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Tuesday morning. He said he would like someone to buy struggling discount carrier Spirit but he also suggested that the federal government could “help that one out.”

American also rejected the idea of a merger with United last week.
