If you’ve ever stood in front of the mirror and wondered what your outfit’s missing, Macy’s may have the answer. The company recently launched its “Ask Macy’s” AI chatbot, powered by Google’s Gemini AI assistant, and it’s having shocking success.

The chatbot launched across all the company’s digital platforms on Monday, but it was tested with about half of Macy’s website visitors over several weeks, the company told Bloomberg. Shoppers who use the chatbot spend about 4.75 times more than those who don’t, Bloomberg reported.

The bot’s short-term success comes as Macy’s tries to make its comeback after a decade of declining sales.

Earlier this month, the company reported net sales decreased by 2.4% last year, but returned to comparable sales growth, up 1.5%. Macy’s expects to make $21.4 billion to $21.65 billion in net sales this year, a little less than last year’s $21.76 billion, and sees comp sales flat at the midpoint of guidance.

Chief Customer and Digital Officer Max Magni explained that customers may be primed to spend more because they’re looking for a specific item, such as an outfit for an upcoming event, rather than when they’re just browsing, Bloomberg reported. He suspects that the bot is also attracting a younger customer base.

The most popular features are the “complete the look” option, where the bot suggests accessories to go with an outfit, and a virtual try-on feature that allows shoppers to see what an item looks like on them. Customers can also use the virtual try-on feature in store, if they don’t have time to see if an item fits, Chief Stores Office Barbie Cameron told Bloomberg.

More AI shopping assistants are coming as companies and startups bet on making online shopping more seamless. For example, Bill Gates’s daughter Phoebe Gates founded Phia, a browser extension that compares prices across the internet.

And after more than four years in beta, Marc Lore and Melissa Bridgeford, publicly launched shopping agent Wizard in February.

“Every retailer is trying to figure it out one step at a time,” Magni told Bloomberg. “This is anybody’s game. Nobody has cracked the code.”

Getting the Macy’s bot ready for customers has taken some tweaking, and thousands of employees weighed in, according to Magni. Originally, it didn’t take into account that shoppers in different climates may not want to see the same selections.

There were also some tone issues, Magni added. When he asked for T-shirt suggestions for his son, the bot coldly offered a list and wrote: “Here’s a T-shirt for a 10-year-old.”

Now, the bot is more friendly. When asked again, the bot replied “‘Ten-year-olds can have so much fun with color – do you want a brighter or more muted color selection?’” Magni said. “The machine continues to learn.”

The multiyear partnership will lean on Google’s Gemini and cloud technology for future Apple foundational models, according to a joint statement obtained by CNBC’s Jim Cramer.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and we’re excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users,” Apple said in a statement Monday.

The models will continue to run on Apple devices and the company’s private cloud compute, the companies added.

Apple declined to comment on the terms of the deal. Google referred CNBC to the joint statement.

In August, Bloomberg reported that Apple was in early talks with Google to use a custom Gemini model to power a new iteration of Siri. The news outlet later reported that Apple was planning to pay about $1 billion a year to utilize Google AI.

The deal is another major indicator of growing trust in Google’s accelerating AI agenda and comeback against OpenAI. In 2025, the search giant logged its best year since 2009 and surpassed Apple in market capitalization last week for the first time since 2019.

Google already pays Apple billions each year to be the default search engine on iPhones. But that lucrative partnership briefly came into question after Google was found to hold an illegal internet search monopoly.

In September, a judge ruled against a worst-case scenario outcome that could have forced Google to divest its Chrome browser business.

The decision also allowed Google to continue to make deals such as the one with Apple.

Shares climbed following the news but later pulled back. Google briefly touched above a $4 trillion market value.

Apple has mostly stood on the sidelines of the AI frenzy that’s swept up Wall Street since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT at the end of 2022.

Hyperscalers Amazon, Meta Platforms and Microsoft have shelled out billions on AI products, tools and infrastructure for their customers.

That’s amped up the pressure on the iPhone maker to deliver an impressive Siri AI voice upgrade, which it delayed last year until 2026, despite running ads for the product.

“It’s going to take us longer than we thought to deliver on these features and we anticipate rolling them out in the coming year,” the company said in a statement at the time.

Apple currently partners with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri and Apple Intelligence, specifically for complicated queries that can tap into the AI model’s world knowledge. It’s unclear what the Google partnership means for the ChatGPT integration in the future.

The iPhone maker told CNBC that it isn’t making any changes to the agreement. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, Google has made steady progress on its AI agenda, introducing its upgraded Gemini 3 model late last year.

In October, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company’s cloud segment signed more deals worth over $1 billion through the third quarter of 2025 than the previous two years combined.

As retailers increasingly turn to artificial intelligence tools to lure shoppers and run key parts of their business, Google wants to make sure it’s in the center of the action.

At the kickoff of the National Retail Federation’s annual show on Sunday, Google announced the launch of what it’s calling the Universal Commerce Protocol. The company wants UCP to become an industry standard that retailers use for their AI agents and systems across tasks like discovery, buying and “post-purchase-support.”

Google says the open-source protocol creates a unified system spanning the shopping experience, from searching to payment, so that retailers don’t have to build their own tools and connect the various functions.

“It’s very important to have a standardized way so we can scale these things and everyone can be prepared for all the various steps to happen,” Vidhya Srinivasan, vice president of Google ads and commerce, said in an interview. “Businesses can pick and choose what they want so there’s flexibility for them.”

E-commerce has emerged as one of the major battlegrounds in the booming generative AI market, with Google facing off against OpenAI, Perplexity and Amazon, as they all try and get consumers to use their various apps and services to begin their shopping journey.

In September, OpenAI announced Instant Checkout, which allows users to buy some products through ChatGPT, taking a fee from transactions it helps orchestrate. OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol developed in partnership with Stripe, is open source and could compete with UCP.

Perplexity in May said it’s partnering with PayPal to let users buy products, book travel and secure concert tickets directly in its chat without leaving the platform, and in November said it will roll out a free agentic shopping product for U.S. users ahead of the holiday season.

And earlier last year, Amazon launched “Shop Direct,” a feature that lets consumers browse items from other brands’ sites on Amazon. Some of those items include a button labeled “Buy for Me,” an AI agent that can purchase products from other websites on a shopper’s behalf.

By 2030, the retail market could represent a $3 trillion to $5 trillion opportunity globally due to AI-powered tools and agentic commerce, according to a report in October from McKinsey.

Google said UCP was co-developed with companies including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair and Target. The protocol will soon power a new checkout feature allowing users to buy direct from Google’s AI Mode or Gemini App. They can pay via Google Wallet, but Srinivasan said the company plans to include other payment methods like PayPal in the future.

Srinivasan said UCP will be compatible with other existing protocols.

As part of Sunday’s announcements, Google also introduced a feature called Business Agent, allowing shoppers to chat with brands.

“This is to address the newer consumer behavior which is shifted toward more conversational commerce,” Srinivasan said. “We want retailers to be able to connect to users on our surfaces but using their own voice.”

Then there’s Google’s core market: advertising.

Google said it’s testing “Direct Offers,” which will let retailers promote unique discounts, such as 20% off of a product, if a user of the AI Mode chatbot expresses intent to buy something.

“Our role in the ecosystem is that of a matchmaker and one way is with ads,” Srinivasan said. “It’s a really big focus for us to innovate in the space that adds value to both retailers and buyers.”

The program, called LLM Suite, is a portal created by the bank to harness large language models from the world’s leading AI startups. It currently uses models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Every eight weeks, LLM Suite is updated as the bank feeds it more from the vast databases and software applications of its major businesses, giving the platform more abilities, Derek Waldron, JPMorgan chief analytics officer, told CNBC in an exclusive interview.

“The broad vision that we’re working towards is one where the JPMorgan Chase of the future is going to be a fully AI-connected enterprise,” Waldron said.

JPMorgan, the world’s largest bank by market capitalization, is being “fundamentally rewired” for the coming artificial intelligence era, according to Waldron. The bank, a heavyweight across Main Street and Wall Street finance, wants to provide every employee with AI agents, automate every behind-the-scenes process and have every client experience curated with AI concierges.

If the effort succeeds, the project could have profound implications for the bank’s employees, customers and shareholders — even the nature of corporate labor itself.

Waldron, who gave CNBC the first demonstration of its AI platform seen by any outsider, showed the program creating an investment banking deck in about 30 seconds, work that would’ve previously taken a team of junior bankers hours to complete.

Out of the box

Since the arrival of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022, optimism over generative AI has driven markets higher on gains from the tech giants and chipmakers closest to the trade. Underpinning their growth is the expectation that corporate clients deploying AI will either boost worker productivity or lower expenses through layoffs — or both.

But similar to how the internet story played out in the 1990s, near-term expectations for AI may have outstripped reality. Most corporations had no tangible returns yet on their AI projects despite more than $30 billion in collective investments, according to an MIT report from July.

In the case of JPMorgan, even with it $18 billion annual tech budget, it will take years for the company to realize AI’s potential by stitching the cognitive power of AI models together with the bank’s proprietary data and software programs, said Waldron.

“There is a value gap between what the technology is capable of and the ability to fully capture that within an enterprise,” Waldron said.

Companies “do work in thousands of different applications, there’s a lot of work to connect those applications into an AI ecosystem and make them consumable,” he said.

If JPMorgan can beat other banks to the punch on incorporating AI, it will enjoy a period of higher margins before the rest of the industry catches up. That first-mover advantage will allow it to grow revenues faster by going after a larger slice of the addressable market in global finance — enabling the bank to pitch more middle-market companies in investment banking, for instance.

Change on the horizon

AI was a major topic at a four-day executive retreat held in July by JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, according to a person who attended but declined to be identified speaking about the private event.

Among concerns discussed at the off-site meeting, held at a resort outside Nashville, Tennessee, was how AI-driven changes will be adopted by the bank’s 317,000-person workforce and its possible impacts to the apprenticeship model on areas including investment banking.

If JPMorgan succeeds with its AI goals, it will mean that a bank that is already the largest and most profitable in American history is set for new heights. Dimon has led the bank since 2005, guiding it through periods of upheaval to notch record profits in 7 of the last 10 years.

The end state for JPMorgan, as envisioned by Waldron, is a future in which AI is woven into the fabric of the company:

“Every employee will have their own personalized AI assistant; every process is powered by AI agents, and every client experience has an AI concierge,” he said.

JPMorgan laid the groundwork for this starting in 2023, when it gave employees access to OpenAI’s models through LLM Suite; it was essentially a corporate ChatGPT tool used to draft emails and summarize documents.

About 250,000 JPMorgan employees have access to the platform today, which is the entire workforce except for branch and call center staff, said Waldron. Half of them use it roughly every day, he said.

JPMorgan is now early in the next phase of its AI blueprint: It has begun deploying agentic AI to handle complex multistep tasks for employees, according to an internal road map provided by the bank.

“As those agents become increasingly powerful in terms of their AI capabilities and increasingly connected into JPMorgan,” Waldron said, “they can take on more and more responsibilities.”

Nvidia deck

Waldron, a former McKinsey partner with a Ph.D. in computational physics, recently demonstrated LLM Suite’s capabilities to CNBC.

He gave the program a prompt: “You are a technology banker at JPMorgan Chase preparing for a meeting with the CEO and CFO of Nvidia. Prepare a five-page presentation that includes the latest news, earnings and a peer comparison.”

LLM Suite created a credible-looking PowerPoint deck in about 30 seconds.

“You can imagine in the past how that would have been done; we would’ve had teams of investment banking analysts working long hours at night to do this,” said Waldron.

The bank is also training AI to draft other key investment banking documents including the “inch thick” confidential memos that JPMorgan produces for prospective M&A clients, said the person who attended the July executive meeting.

The prospect of collapsing workloads means that fewer junior bankers may be needed even while AI-enabled teams handle more work and pitch more companies, according to senior Wall Street executives at several firms who spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide their candid thoughts.

But to extract the full value from this new, almost magical technology, it’s not just about the tools: Changes to how employees and departments are organized may be needed.

One proposal being discussed at a major investment bank is reducing the ratio of junior bankers to senior managers from the current 6-1 to 4-1. In the new regime, half of those junior bankers would be working from cities with cheaper labor, say Bengaluru, India, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, instead of being clustered in expensive New York.

The AI-powered junior bankers could then work on deals in shifts around the clock, passing the baton from one time zone to the next.

With fewer bankers on the payroll, the cost structure of investment banking would fall, boosting the bottom line, said the executives.

Structural shifts

Unlike previous generations of technology, where bespoke automation tools had to be made for every distinct job, LLM Suite can service them all, from traders to wealth managers and risk officers, according to Waldron.

The implications for workers are profound. AI will empower some workers and give them more time, positioning them at the center of a team of AI agents. Others will be displaced by AI that takes over processes which no longer require human intervention.

That shift favors those who work directly with clients — a private banker with a roster of rich investors, traders who cater to hedge fund and pension managers, or investment bankers with relationships with Fortune 500 CEOs, for instance.

Those at risk of having to find new roles include operations and support staff who mainly deal in rote processes like setting up accounts, fraud detection or settling trades.

In May, JPMorgan’s consumer banking chief told investors that operations staff would fall by at least 10% in the next five years thanks to artificial intelligence deployment.

“In an AI world, you’ll still have people at the top who are managing and have relationships with clients, but many, many of the processes underneath are now being done by AI systems,” Waldron said.

AI FOMO

But it’s still unwritten as to how that future will unfold; will corporations retain workers impacted by AI, retraining them for the new roles it creates? Or will they simply opt to cut their payroll?

“Without a doubt, AI technology will have changes on the construction of the workforce,” Waldron said. “That is certain, but I think it’s unclear as to exactly what those changes will look like.”

More broadly, Waldron said that workers would shift from being creators of reports or software updates, or “makers” in his terminology, to “checkers” or managers of AI agents doing that work.

The bank is closing in on another frontier: It will soon allow generative AI to interact directly with customers, Waldron said. JPMorgan will start with limited cases, like allowing it to extract information for a user, before rolling out more advanced versions, he said.

Despite market concerns that the AI trade is a brewing bubble, corporate clients are actually more worried now that if they don’t start adopting it soon, they’ll fall behind and lose share, said Avi Gesser, a Debevoise & Plimpton partner who advises corporations on issues around AI.

“People are starting to see what these tools can do,” Gesser said. “They’re sort of like, ‘Wow, if you get the workflow right, implement it properly and have the right guardrails, I could see how that would save you a lot of time and a lot of money and deliver a better product.”

Meta finance chief Susan Li also told analysts during a follow-up earnings call on July 30 that the online ad market appears to have improved since April.

In April, Li noted that Asia-based online retailers pulled back on their digital ad spending amid broader macroeconomic uncertainty due to President Donald Trump’s tough tariffs and the closing of the de minimis trade loophole.

This quarter, Li said there’s been a noticeable “improvement” with those Asian-based ecommerce firms, which have increased their digital ad spending on the platform along with small, North American-based advertisers.

“We generally expect another quarter of healthy advertising demand,” Li said about the advertising pickup.

Gil Luria, the head of technology research at D.A. Davidson, said that while there is still broader macroeconomic uncertainty, “today, digital advertising in general, is doing well; It is simply an extension of the fact that the consumer is still strong.”

“There’s optimism that consumer spending will hold up and therefore all the downstream markets will hold up,” Luria said.

“I think one of the things that its earnings taught us was that you can spend a lot of money on AI when your core business is doing well, and especially when your core business has been already benefiting from the investments that you’ve made in AI,” Jasmine Enberg, a vice president and principal analyst for eMarketer, said about Meta’s second quarter.

The continued jaw-dropping pace of AI spending also doesn’t seem to be slowing any time soon.

Alphabet added an extra $10 billion to its 2025 forecast for capital expenditures, now pegged at $85 billion, while Meta raised the low end of its capital expenditures for the year to come in between $66 billion and $72 billion instead of $64 billion and $72 billion.

Investors showed no signs of trepidation about Meta and Alphabet’s massive AI spend because those companies’ overall sales continued to rise.

Outside of the tech giants, Reddit reported strong second-quarter sales of $500 million, representing a 78% year-over-year increase that helped lift the company’s shares as much as 20%.

“They kind of rose back like a phoenix and had some extraordinary results,” Luria said about Reddit, which saw its shares plummet over 15% in February after it reported weaker-than-expected user numbers due to a Google search algorithm change.

Reddit’s blockbuster quarter contrasted with similar-sized peers like Snap and Pinterest, which both reported lukewarm quarterly earnings this week.

Snap’s second-quarter sales grew only 9% year-over-year and it missed Wall Street’s estimates on global average revenue per user, a metric that refers to how much money the company derives from each user.

Contributing to the miss was a botched update to Snap’s advertising platform that hurt the company’s “topline growth,” Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said in an investor letter.

The Snapchat parent on Wednesday also added Reddit to its list of competitors in its latest 10-Q filing on Wednesday, indicating a potential, burgeoning rivalry.

Meanwhile, Pinterest shares sank over 10% on Thursday after it reported second-quarter earnings that missed on earnings per share.

Pinterest finance chief Julia Brau Donnelly told analysts during an earnings call that the company is still noticing some tariff-related concerns, “and broader market uncertainty” as it previously indicated in May.

Unlike Meta, Donnelly said that “Asia-based e-commerce retailers pulled back spend in the U.S.,” underscoring how some advertisers gravitate toward bigger online ad platforms amid any signs of global economic uncertainty.

“There’s very little room for mistakes or missteps,” Enberg said about the quarterly earnings reports from smaller tech firms like Snap and Pinterest.

Comet will allow users to connect with enterprise applications like Slack and ask complex questions via voice and text, according to a brief demo video Perplexity released on Wednesday.

The browser is available to Perplexity Max subscribers, and the company said invite-only access will roll out to a waitlist over the summer. Perplexity Max costs users $200 per month.

“We built Comet to let the internet do what it has been begging to do: to amplify our intelligence,” Perplexity wrote in a blog post Wednesday.

Perplexity is best known for its AI-powered search engine that gives users simple answers to questions and links out to the original source material on the web. After the company was accused of plagiarizing content from media outlets, it launched a revenue-sharing model with publishers last year.

In May, Perplexity was in late-stage talks to raise $500 million at a $14 billion valuation, a source familiar confirmed to CNBC. The startup was also approached by Meta earlier this year about a potential acquisition, but the companies did not finalize a deal.

“We will continue to launch new features and functionality for Comet, improve experiences based on your feedback, and focus relentlessly–as we always have–on building accurate and trustworthy AI that fuels human curiosity,” Perplexity said Wednesday.

BEIJING — Alibaba, Tencent and JD.com reported earnings this week that not only reflected improving Chinese consumer spending, but also the growing benefits of artificial intelligence in advertising.

E-commerce giant Alibaba said late Thursday its Taobao and Tmall group sales rose by 9% year on year to 101.37 billion yuan ($13.97 billion) for the three months ended March 31. That’s above the 97.94 billion yuan predicted by a FactSet analyst poll, and the quarterly growth figure was well above the 3% segment increase for the 12-month period ending March 31.

“The e-commerce and ad revenues were positive surprises as there were expectations tariffs would affect consumer behavior,” Kai Wang, Asia equity market strategist at Morningstar, said in an email regarding the three companies’ earnings results.

It’s important to note the earnings releases cover only the period before U.S.-China tensions escalated in April with new tariffs of more than 100% on products from both countries — an effective trade embargo. The two countries issued a rare joint statement Monday announcing a 90-day reduction in most of the recently added tariffs.

The U.S.-China trade dispute since April has negatively affected consumption to some extent, given the increased uncertainty for small and medium-sized businesses, Charlie Chen, managing director and head of Asia research at China Renaissance Securities, said Friday. He expects that as trade tensions ease, consumption will rise.

But despite lackluster consumption overall, sales of certain electronics and home appliances have done well since last year thanks to China’s trade-in subsidies for supporting such consumer spending.

Overall, the e-commerce company reported a 16.3% increase in revenue from its retail business to 263.85 billion yuan in the three months ended March 31. That was better than the 226.84 billion yuan in retail segment sales predicted by a FactSet poll.

While Nomura analysts said that segment revenue growth was in line with estimates, they pointed out in a note that “Tencent ads was a big outperformer in the Chinese ads industry despite the challenging macro environment.”

Tencent’s marketing services revenue surged by 20% to 31.9 billion yuan, helped by “robust advertiser demand” for short videos and other content inside its WeChat social media app. Tencent noted “ongoing AI upgrades” to its advertising platform.

AI is boosting ads

AI is helping Tencent lift its click-through rates — a measure of success for online ads — to nearly 3%, company management said on an earnings call Wednesday, according to a FactSet transcript. That’s up sharply from a 0.1% click-through rate for banner ads historically, and around 1% for feed ads, the company said.

Combined monthly average users for WeChat, known as Weixin in China, topped 1.4 billion in the first quarter for the first time. The app offers one of two major mobile payment systems used in mainland China.

Many coffee shops and online retailers also use mini-apps in WeChat for customers to place orders. Tencent said Thursday that its e-commerce operations had grown so large it was now a new unit within WeChat.

“AI ads improve efficiency and algorithm, which should translate into better targeting towards consumers even if macro conditions are not optimal,” Morningstar’s Wang said. “It is still a bit early to quantify how much incremental benefit AI ads bring compared to non-AI ads, but we have seen some monetization from AI-driven ads.”

JD said its marketing revenues climbed by 15.7% to 22.32 billion yuan for the quarter, also partly attributing that rise to AI tools.

On an earnings call Tuesday, JD management said its advertising research and development team is using large language models to improve ad conversion rates and accelerate ad revenue growth. The company added it is implementing AI tools that enable merchants to “execute complex ad campaigns” with a simple command.

Advertisers have long sought ways to target ads at the consumers most likely to make a purchase.

On Wednesday, YouTube announced that advertisers can use Google’s Gemini AI model to target ads to viewers when they are most engaged with a video.

Alibaba noted that marketing revenue, which it calls “customer management,” grew 12% year on year to nearly $10 billion thanks in part to increased use of the company’s AI tool for boosting merchants’ marketing efficiency, Quanzhantui.

However, Alibaba’s overall profit was only about half of what analysts had predicted, sending shares down by nearly 7.6% in subsequent the U.S. trading session.

China is set to release retail sales data for April on Monday. Analysts polled by Reuters predict a 5.5% year-on-year increase in retail sales for April, down slightly from 5.9% growth in March.

A Morgan Stanley survey from April 8 to 11, conducted immediately after the escalation in U.S.-China tensions, found that consumer confidence fell to a 2.5-year low, and 44% of respondents were concerned about job losses — the highest since 2020 when the survey began. Only 23% of consumers expect to spend more in the next quarter, the survey found, an 8 percentage point drop from the prior quarter.

Lackluster domestic demand persisted in April, with a 0.1% year-on-year drop in the consumer price index for the month — the third-straight month of decline. However, when excluding food and energy prices, the so-called core CPI rose by 0.5%, the same pace as in March.

Since the real estate market has yet to recover, and exports are restricted by geopolitics, Chen expects Chinese policymakers to focus on boosting consumption in order to achieve the year’s growth target of around 5%.

He expects related stimulus policies to include boosting spending on food and beverage, caregiving, travel, sports, and durable goods not yet included in the trade-in subsidies program.

June 18 marks the next major promotional season for shopping in China.

“I think we’re going to get a pretty good 618. Now obviously, we’re not dealing with 30% year-on-year growth anymore like we were in the first 10 years” of the shopping festival, Jacob Cooke, co-founder and CEO of WPIC Marketing + Technologies, told CNBC earlier this week. The company helps foreign brands — such as Vitamix and IS Clinical — sell online in China and other parts of Asia.

He predicts 618 sales growth will rise by “very low double-digits.”

BEIJING — Chinese robot vacuum cleaner company Roborock revealed a new model on Monday that comes with a folding arm for removing socks and other obstacles — a feature powered by artificial intelligence.

It’s the latest step toward what Roborock President Quan Gang expects will be the inevitable: that robot vacuum cleaners become as essential as washing machines.

That’s something that could happen in as soon as three years, especially with the emergence of AI, Quan told CNBC in a late November interview. “If the era of AI flourishing has really arrived, I’m confident that robot vacuum cleaners will be the first category to apply AI,” he said in Mandarin, translated by CNBC.

Using AI that the company developed, the Roborock Saros Z70 can detect and remove obstructions such as socks, small towels, tissues and sandals weighing less than 300 grams (10.58 ounces), according to the company.

The Saros Z70 is set for release in major global markets in the first half of the year, but Roborock has yet to announce pricing. The product reveal comes ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show that kicks off Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Many companies, including several based in China, now sell robot vacuum cleaners.

Beijing-based Roborock started selling to the U.S. in 2018, Quan said, noting that sales in the country didn’t start to take off until 2023. Roborock also sells its robot vacuums in countries such as Germany, China and South Korea, and makes sure to adhere to local data privacy rules, Quan said.

But robot vacuum penetration rates remain low — just over 10% in developed countries and single digits in developing countries, Quan said. He said that’s both a challenge and a potential for growth, which he expects can get a boost from the integration of artificial intelligence.

The Verge and Wired late last year both named different Roborock models the best robot vacuum available. But the machines aren’t cheap.

“Roborock’s S8 MaxV Ultra ($1,799.99) is an exceptional vacuum cleaner,” The Verge said, noting it is “the best model in the relatively new category of ‘hands-free’ robot vacs, bots that do virtually everything for you: empty their bins, refill their mop tanks, and clean and dry their mop pads.”

“Roborock invented this category with the S7 MaxV Ultra and has been steadily improving it,” The Verge said.

Wired selected Roborock’s Qrevo S, which sells for $800 on Amazon. The review highlighted the Qrevo’s lidar-based navigation and AI feature which enable the machine to distinguish between carpets and tiles for vacuuming or mopping, respectively.

Competition is fierce. CNET said two other companies’ robot vacuums tied for best of 2025, the $900 Ecovacs Deebot T30S Combo — which also has a self-emptying dustbin — and the $359 iRobot Roomba Combo J7 Plus.

Shares of Shanghai-listed Roborock closed 2.6% higher Friday after reports emerged of the Saros Z70 and its robotic arm. The stock climbed 10.3% in 2024.

Operating revenue rose by 23.2% for the first three quarters of 2024 to 7 billion yuan ($960 million), with profit of 1.47 billion yuan. Roborock does not break out revenue by region.

Quan said that soon after Roborock’s founding in July 2014, the company sensed the importance of artificial intelligence and set up a dedicated lab in Shanghai and a research institute in Shenzhen. Each location houses around 30 researchers, who only need to focus on technology, in contrast to the product development team that must meet deadlines and consider profit, Quan said.

The next challenge is to expand the number of researchers to around 300 people, Quan said, noting it’s been hard to find qualified talent.

The company spent 9.1% of its operating revenue in the first three quarters of 2024 on research and development, according to CNBC calculations of public figures. That’s up from slightly more than 7% in each of the past three years, the data showed.

Roborock on Monday also announced updates to its washing machines, which can dry clothes in the same unit.

An electronic health record, or an EHR, is a digital version of a patient’s medical history that’s updated by doctors and nurses over time. EHR software can be complex and cumbersome for clinicians to use, but it’s become an integral component of the modern U.S. health-care system.

Oracle’s latest EHR is equipped with cloud and artificial intelligence capabilities that will make it easier to navigate and set up, the company said. There are no menus or drop down screens, and doctors can pull up the information they need by asking questions with their voices. Ideally, this will allow doctors to spend less time searching through records and more time caring for patients, Oracle said.

“It’s not just a scribe. It’s not an assistant. It’s almost like having your own resident,” Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager of Oracle Health and Life Sciences, told CNBC in an interview.

Oracle’s new offering could help boost its position within the fiercely competitive EHR market, where it has struggled to maintain its footing in recent years. In 2023, Oracle saw its largest net hospital loss on record while market-leader Epic Systems, Oracle’s top rival, was the only company that saw a net increase in acute care market share, according to a report from KLAS Research.

Cerner contributed $5.9 billion to Oracle’s total revenue in fiscal 2023. Epic generated $4.9 billion in revenue last year.

The new EHR has been in the works since Oracle acquired Cerner, but it was not built on top of Cerner’s existing infrastructure, Verma said. That means current Cerner customers will have to decide whether to migrate to the separate system.

“Just think about crumbling infrastructure in a house, you’re not going to put new things on top of it,” she said. “That was the conclusion that we came to when we looked at the Cerner technology, so what we’re introducing to the market is something that’s brand new.”

Suhas Uliyar, Oracle’s senior vice president for product management in clinical and health-care AI, walked CNBC through a virtual demo of the new EHR. He showcased what it might look like for a doctor to get up to speed, respond to messages and fill prescriptions ahead of a day packed full of patient visits.

The EHR is browser based, and physicians will see a search bar and a chronological list of their appointments when they open it. The interface is very simple. A doctor can click on the microphone in the search bar and ask questions like, “How many openings do I have for today?” or “How many new patients do I have on schedule for today?” The doctor will then get an AI-generated answer within seconds.

If a doctor clicks on a patient, they’ll open their chart, where they can find AI summaries as well as more detailed explanations of their medical history. The physician can see what’s changed since the patient’s last visit, whether they’re taking any new medication and other details like lab results, clinical documentation, past treatments, risk factors, messages, allergies and vitals.

Additionally, the doctor can click the microphone and ask patient-specific questions like “Has she ever complained about panic attacks or shortness of breath?,” “Has he had a CT screening for lung cancer, and are his vaccinations up to date?” or “Which antibiotics have you treated her urinary tract infection with?”

“It’s going through the entire history, all the records, and it gives me a very specific answer,” Uliyar said. “I didn’t have to go scroll through 15 different documents and find that.”

The voice-activated questions can build on one another, and the EHR’s AI will start to learn the doctor’s habits, like the types of medications they prescribe and refill often. Even when Uliyar stumbled over his words or didn’t phrase a question exactly right, the system still pulled up the information he was looking for.

If a doctor wants to go into more detail or double check an AI-generated answer within the new EHR, they can always click on the citation and look through the original record that’s referenced, Uliyar said. And answers that include content like medication dosage information or other evidence-based recommendations will link to validated databases, he added.

While Oracle has been developing its new EHR, the company has also been rolling out features to existing Cerner customers to try and improve their experience with the product. Uliyar said many of these features, including its Clinical Digital Assistant, are already embedded within the new EHR.

Oracle announced the general availability of Clinical Digital Assistant in June, and it aims to automate much of the documentation that doctors are responsible for.

Physicians can access Clinical Digital Assistant through an app on their phone, and they hit a button to record their visits with patients. Once they stop recording, Oracle’s AI automatically generates a clinical note based on the appointment, so the doctors no longer need to write it themselves.

Around 70 customers are already using Clinical Digital Assistant, Uliyar said. The company is currently building a similar tool for nurses.

Since Clinical Digital Assistant is already embedded within the new EHR, customers will not have to worry about integrating it. The tool will also remain available as a standalone product that’s EHR agnostic, Uliyar said.

The early adopter program for Oracle’s new EHR begins next year, and Oracle said it will work with customers to determine the customizations they need. The company has been moving its health-care customers to the cloud, so that should make the EHR implementation process much easier, Verma said.

“We see it as very disruptive to the market,” she said. “Our EHR is going to solve a lot of long-standing problems that we’ve had in health care.”

That’s according to Sensor Tower, a market intelligence firm whose data shows Taobao shot to first place in Apple’s Singapore App Store across all categories, as of Sept. 11. On Tuesday, the day the English-language version was announced, the app rose from fifth to first place in the shopping category.

Prior to this, the Taobao app had still enjoyed relative popularity and was consistently ranked in the top ten shopping apps for iPhone users from mid-August onwards, according to Sensor Tower.

The new update “highlights Taobao’s dedication to serving its Singapore users, who have shown a strong desire for an English-language interface, reflecting their diverse language fluency,” Alibaba said in a press release Tuesday. It did not elaborate on the AI translation features. The company has its own AI model.

The release said the new platform “enhances accessibility for non-Chinese users, eliminating their need for manual translations that previously made shopping less convenient for them.”

Taobao and Tmall are Alibaba’s biggest source of revenue by far, but to date have primarily sold to people in China using a Chinese-language interface. Taobao and Tmall Group’s revenue for the quarter ended June 30 was 26.55 billion yuan ($3.65 billion), a 6% increase year-on-year.

Alibaba has in recent years has also sought to ramp up its overseas e-commerce business with platforms such as Alibaba.com and AliExpress.

Singapore is the first market where Taobao will introduce this new update, alongside the city-state’s neighbor, Malaysia, according to Alibaba.

As early as last year, Singaporean Taobao users had previously made guides on how to purchase clothes, furniture and lifestyle items from Taobao. These video guides were posted on the ByteDance-owned TikTok platform, another Chinese app. Several videos amassed more than 10,000 views, with one accumulating 105,000 views.

Alibaba’s latest move reflects the growing trend of Chinese businesses striving to expand globally, and using Singapore as a cultural testbed to further their ambitions to reach the Western market.

Last week, consulting firm Bain and Company said in their study of Asia Pacific-headquartered consumer goods companies that Chinese companies have a significant advantage versus South Korean and Japanese companies in the race to go global: the large ethnic Chinese diaspora settled outside of mainland China.

“There are many of these Chinese companies that have really ambitious global mindsets and are able to take the sort of entrepreneurial, fast-innovation capability that they built domestically and use that to create new positions overseas,” David Zehner, senior partner at Bain, previously told CNBC.

According to a government report as of end-June 2023, almost three-quarters of Singapore’s 5.92 million-strong nation is of Chinese descent. About 20% of Malaysia’s population is ethnically Chinese.

Not a perfect English-language experience

Taobao users in Singapore and Malaysia can buy a range of products — from electronics, to shoes, to kitchen appliances — and have it shipped to their doorstep for a small shipping fee. Prices are listed in yuan.

The new version of Taobao can convert prices from yuan to the Singapore dollar, and product descriptions will also be available in English.

But as of Thursday, the user experience was far from perfect.

A check by CNBC found that prices were not converted from yuan to Singapore dollars despite changing currency display options. Translations were also quite literal. However, the English translation option was also available for product reviews.

Singapore-based social media users were quick to highlight the new features, despite their imperfections.

A TikTok by an individual user one day after the announcement showed users how to change the Taobao app display to English. The video garnered 947,000 views in a day.

Sensor Tower told CNBC that Taobao’s average monthly active users in Singapore reached 167,000 in the third quarter of 2024.
